Managing your sales territory

A timely H&S reminder

Fraud – a licence to print money?

Some sales representatives seem to operate in a state of chaos in regard to managing their respective territories, and others call on the same clients at the same frequency, irrespective of that client’s potential or lack thereof.

You would have to be living on a desert island not to know that under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (and regulations), workers’ safety is paramount.

There’s been quite a bit of reporting lately that the Police are unable to investigate all the fraud cases being referred to them.

But using some simple tools means managing a sales territory can be very productive and give you a far greater return on investment. I believe there are three interacting variables in managing a territory successfully. They are: Effective routing, appropriate call allocation, and efficient time management. In this article I will discuss the first variable - effective routing. Routing refers to the specific “style” you use and the paths you choose to cover your territory and your accounts.

The routing styles are: Calling by Crisis In crisis mode people tend to be quite unstructured. While some flexibility is good, effective territory management requires planning rather than quick reflexes. A crisis-prone salesperson often has difficulty in following a structured territory plan. The Crisis style of territory routing allows for great flexibility and for quick reaction to opportunities and problems. However, crisis-prone salespeople have a tendency to call on accounts -- large or small -- without sufficient analysis regarding whether they really need to handle the so-called crisis immediately, and to do so in person. Calling by Milk Route In the Milk Route style people arrange their calls in sequence and visit all accounts with the same frequency. While this is efficient in utilising travel time, it is very costly in terms of allocating calls according to yield. You should visit the highyield accounts more frequently and allocate fewer calls to low-potential accounts. Calling by Priority While the Milk Route and Crisis styles are useful in special situations, the best method for consistent and effective territory management is the Priority style. That is by allocating calls according to account potential. Priority call allocation will enhance your coverage and enable you to allocate your calls according to where you get the best return on your call investment. This is the preferred style because it helps ensure that you put your time and energy toward those accounts most likely to yield the greatest sales results.

Identifying hazards is a first step in ensuring a safe working environment, but the reforms were also about instilling a risk management culture within workplaces. This means just listing hazards without assessing the level of risk to people will no longer cut the mustard. The District Court has recently issued a judgment against Wellington Electricity Limited and North Power. Each company was charged under section 163D of the Electricity Act 1992 (intentionally or negligently causing or permitting work to be done in a manner dangerous to life). Wellington Electricity Limited was fined $26,000, Northpower was fined $30,000. The two companies had previously voluntarily paid the worker $20,000 following a restorative justice hearing. Wellington Electricity was ordered to pay a further $4,030 and Northpower a further $6,000 in reparations to the worker, bringing total reparations to the worker to $30,030. According to WorkSafe, Wellington Electricity engaged Northpower to carry out maintenance work on roadside transformers in the Wellington region. Two Northpower employees were working in Karori on 27 May, 2014, when a bracket fell onto live contacts causing an electrical short, resulting in a flashover. The victim sustained serious burns that required specialist treatment from the burns unit. WorkSafe noted that the companies’ failures included: a work plan that lacked clear instructions to prompt workers to stop if they encountered increased risks or conditions that were different to what was in the work plan; not shutting off the power before any maintenance work was undertaken at this site; and not documenting their hazard assessments in one place, such as the work plan that was available to the workers. WorkSafe’s chief inspector, Keith Stewart, was quoted as saying in a media release that “Incidents such as this should not happen. Working near live components is a well-known hazard in the industry, and risks should be appropriately managed to protect the workers.” This case was heard under different legislation to the current legislation. My bet is that under the current laws as they stand, those companies would have faced much heftier fines. So, if you have workers who are or could be exposed to electrical hazards, have you drawn up a comprehensive work safety plan that includes when workers must stop work?

Often this is down to inadequate resources and the huge number of thefts from employees. There is an easier way. Instead of worrying about prosecuting a fraudulent employee, why not put in place some procedures, protocols and protection to minimise, or even eradicate the possibility of being stolen from in the first place? The statistics for in-house employee theft is nothing short of staggering and it costs employers some very serious money. Sadly, most sit on the sidlines thinking; “Oh it will never happen to me, Nigel and Cathy are honest employees”. Sometimes they are correct and often they are not. To implement a best practice workplace is not only common sense, but good value as well. It creates a level playing field that can minimise risk to your business and should help owners sleep better at night. Having great internal controls can also provide a workplace where employees are above suspicion. This can create a more harmonious work environment and bring better comradery and cohesion with team members. If you’re not sure what procedures, policies and protocols are needed, then you can always get in a consultant to discuss and help design some agreed upon procedures, document them and then test that they actually work. It’s like a mini audit, but is geared towards adding real value and enhancing systems. There are obvious areas to check such as cash handling, payroll, banking, invoicing, duplicating creditors, to name but a few - but often overlooked areas, like ordering and stock control, are ripe for picking and theft. Many of these risks can be reduced or removed entirely, but it takes a structured plan. A quick potential warning sign is where you have an employee that never takes annual leave, or only takes a day here and a day there. This is often as they need to be onsite to keep their theft under wraps. Testing that the systems work is another important part and typically we recommend at least an annual test and check-up. Agreed upon procedures and internal dry audits just make sense in our opinion.

If not, then you most probably are not compliant.

Making PR work for you When I was a journalist, my colleagues and I used to talk about public relations consultants as having gone to the dark side. PR was a place where people could dwell in the murky depths of defending the indefensible, or stuffing glitter into envelopes to make sure the recipients of their latest promo really noticed them.

How to pay tax, lose it and then have to pay it again Believe it or not, but this happens quite often. Probably the biggest and most common tax mistake made is losing imputation credits i.e. the benefit a shareholder gets from tax already paid by the company.

PR has been around since the beginning of the last century, but the role of the industry in improving understanding and helping companies and people to be heard, has become much better understood in the last 20-30 years - even amongst journalists.

What is imputation? It is a mechanism that a company can use to pass on credits for tax it has paid on its profits, to its shareholders when it pays them dividends. These credits offset the amount of tax that a resident shareholder would otherwise be liable to pay on those dividends so they don’t have to pay “double tax”.

If you are thinking of employing a public relations consultant or consultancy, there are a few things to consider to ensure they have the knowledge and experience to give you the advice you need.

As an example - let’s say your company made $100,000 profit and paid tax at the company tax rate of 28 percent, which of course would be $28,000.

Firstly, the lead consultant needs to have completed qualifications in PR, whether that is international accreditation in public relations or a university degree in communications, or preferably both. Public relations practitioners who have recently made the switch from journalism and not had any formal training are still learning the ropes. If people are going to hang a sign on the door and call themselves consultants, I believe it is essential they know the theory behind what they do everyday and have a full complement of tools for their clients. Experience is also vital for public relations consultants. It is all very well to know the theory behind managing a reputational crisis, but there is absolutely nothing like being in amongst it. It’s not until you have a portfolio of well-managed issues up your sleeve that you can honestly start to predict what the next twist or turn might be. A good understanding of public relations ethics is essential - not only to keep the consultant safe but also to protect the clients they are working with. The Public Relations Institute of New Zealand (PRINZ) has a code of ethics covering everything from advocacy and honesty to conflicts of interest, professionalism, balancing openness and privacy, and the need to be law abiding. Other things to consider when engaging a PR consultant or consultancy include their areas of specialization, references and testimonials from past and present clients, how they charge, and any potential conflicts with other clients. Choosing the right PR consultancy will make a significant improvement to the way most businesses communicate, helping them to build mutually beneficial relationships with everyone that matters to them, including their customers, the public, their board of directors and staff.

This after-tax profit of $72,000 can be treated in three ways: (i) either kept in the company and used as working capital, (ii) paid out to shareholders as a dividend or, (iii) a combination of both. If the after-tax profit stays in the company, there is no more tax to pay. However, if a dividend is declared and all the profit goes out to a shareholder, then the dividend is taxed at 33 percent; regardless of the income and tax rate of the shareholder. In dollar terms, this is an extra $3,900 of tax. However, if the shareholder is on a lower marginal tax rate, they will receive either a refund or a credit if they pay provisional tax when they file their tax return. How do you lose imputation credits? Quite simply (and we see it often) it’s all to do with the continuity of shareholders from one year to the next. Because it’s so easy to file a company’s annual return online, or do a shared transfer online, many shareholders unwittingly lose (destroy is a better word) the imputation credit of 28 percent that they worked so hard to gain and then pay. The immutable rule is that companies must maintain a minimum of 66 percent of the same shareholding from one year to the next. If there is a change in continuity of shareholding of 34 percent or greater in any one-year period, starting from when the income tax is paid until the dividend is paid, then the most likely scenario is that the tax credits will be lost. For ever! And that’s painful. What’s the takeaway here?

The gender pay gap blame game Gender pay gap. Are you over it? I am all for equality, however, I struggle with this ongoing idea of blame. I recently had a 62-year-old male ask me for advice on securing a new executive-level role, as he was continuously being challenged about his age and he is nearing retirement. He would also add that he felt gender equality was part of his struggle with some organisations looking to add balance to their leadership teams. There has to be a balance, but most importantly there must be transparency in the process, not only for this guy, but for all of us. I am often invited to speak at women-only events, which provides a great environment for like-minded women to share their views and network. However, I wonder how I would feel if there was an event I wanted to attend which was restricted by age or ethnicity. We need to be mindful of the picture we paint in our race for equality. I have no intention of questioning the progress made in recent years when it comes to gender equality and I agree we have a long way to go. In trying to resolve it, it helps to understand how we got here. What is the precedent? How did women become involved in paid employment? We were never officially invited to be equal employees; it was a stop-gap during war. There wasn’t a thought about equality, rates of pay, or women remaining once all the men came home. The world simply had a labour shortage and women were the solution. There lies the problem and with some reflection, precedent could get us out of it. Research from the Ministry for Women tells us that causes of the gender pay gap are complex. Around 20 percent of the gender pay gap was due to differences in education, the occupations and industries that men and women work in. That means the majority, 80 percent, of the gender pay gap is now driven by unexplained factors. Those factors are behaviour and attitudes, and once you gain the insight into how we got here, you have a better chance of putting it right. When the values of an organisation are things like integrity, respect, honesty and loyalty, and they still operate without transparency, surely that is the biggest roadblock to true equality. Select your employees based on capability and desired behaviours. Precedent may well form part of the reason, but does not need to remain the excuse.

Before you make any changes to a company’s shareholding, check with your tax accountant.

The four keys to great delegation Even in small businesses, great delegation is a vital skill for any business person who wants to expand or increase turnover. However, the problem is, very few have formal training in it. One of the hardest things to learn when you first become responsible for other staff, is to get out of the way and let your staff get on with the job. Good delegators give their subordinates as much responsibility and authority as they are able to accept but at the same time maintain control. Paradoxically, they increase their own power by sharing it with others. A common mistake in delegation is passing work on too quickly and not setting enough relevant inspection points. Many would-be delegators don’t realise it’s a four-stage process, not a single action. If you don’t work through each phase with your delegatee, at some point you’ll almost certainly have to backtrack.

The four stages of delegation: 1. Directive delegation Initially a new person needs clear instructions and lots of guidance, not the opportunity to use their initiative. They don’t know enough to need much support, so they won’t yet make many decisions. Your behaviour therefore needs to be highly directive, rather than supportive. In fact, the level of support is quite low. There will also probably be quite a bit of positive correction and adjustment, depending on the complexity of the task. 2. Coaching-style delegation They start to understand the process. You encourage them to come with questions; you give plenty of explanations, continue to instruct, have lots of reviews, and also support them in learning and applying new skills and knowledge. You’ll be providing high levels of both direction and support. 3. Supportive delegation These folk now have a good grip on the process. You’re weaning both yourself and them off lots of ‘telling’ – direction is low. Instead, you mainly give them high support in making their decisions. Your role is to help where needed, review their actions and oversee results as they increase their level of responsibility. 4. High-level delegation Now you’re free! Your delegatee not only has an excellent understanding of the task, but they have the confidence to get on with the job. They can still come for help if they need it, but that’s a rare occurrence. You can now give only low support and low direction, and only need to review their work occasionally.

What’s happening on the business and entertainment front

Home based offices – are they good for business?

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28

The idea of working from home appears idyllic for some people. No wasted time and energy commuting to work, no parking costs or challenges, space to yourself and the ability to design your workspace just as you want.

By surrounding yourself with successful, like-minded people you will continue to thrive and better yourself. MBN is a chance for you to meet regularly with business owners and operators to share ideas and collaborate. The morning is structured in a way that you will never be standing alone. Enjoy a breakfast or coffee whilst being inspired by new ways of thinking.

Aside from avoiding your daily commute, the ability to be at home for children after school, and so on, the everyday reality of working at home on your own can be quite different.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 11

If you’re someone who thrives in a team setting, working at home can feel like you’ve gone into a retreat. The regular interaction with others that fires you up just isn’t there and it can be hard to keep yourself motivated. However, if you struggle to focus in large, open-plan offices, are easily distracted or have a more introverted personality, you may well enjoy that home-based space with fewer interruptions. You will likely be more productive, feel better about your workspace and enjoy the autonomy that comes with it. But should employers be encouraging this option more? Technological advances mean that these days your employees can work from virtually anywhere, but is it worth it? Will encouraging people to work from home mean less office space required and potentially some cost savings for you? Will you see improved or reduced productivity? Does less accountability mean it’s harder to keep people on task? This will depend on your business model, the amount of autonomy you give staff, the type of work being performed and the people in your team - it’s never a ‘one size fits all’ option. In terms of health and safety obligations, any employee who is expected to work from home has the same rights around having a safe workstation set up, good seating and lighting, as they do in a normal office setting.

WEDNESEDAY, OCTOBER 18 SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGTY WORKSHOP Social media may seem pretty straight forward, but are you doing the same thing time again without seeing the results you are looking for? This two-day workshop is hosted by fellow Kiwi Pauline Stockhausen, an expert on online communities who recently presented at the world’s largest social media marketing conference – Social Media Marketing World 2016 and 2017.

This is an area which is often overlooked by employers, but one to be more aware of. It shouldn’t be a big challenge to cover off, but it is really important – and a legal requirement to ensure that you are keeping your staff – your most valuable resource – safe.

For more information, go to: www.yoobee.ac.nz.

Legislation aside, the massively increased use of technology has an impact on people’s workplace wellbeing. As a good employer, make sure that any home-based employees take action in these areas.

Owning a business can be unnerving as nothing is ever guaranteed. You can however put processes in place to prevent any nasty downfalls thus future proofing your business. Meet with experts who are in the know, learn how to manage changes and how to use IT effectively to suit your needs alongside networking and communication and anything else you would like to cover in a 40-minute session.

Remember, people who suit this type of work environment will thrive and be more productive, so it does pay to be flexible and make the most of the digital age to enhance work environment options for your staff.

The AM105 is suitable for smaller lawns up to 600sqm and is also designed to handle slopes with an incline of 25 percent or 14 degrees. To celebrate the addition of four newgeneration robotic lawn mowers to its Automower® product line, Husqvarna is giving away 1 x AM105 to one lucky reader of Auckland Today and Canterbury Today magazines! portable petrol-powered garden equipment. Its Automower® range provides the ultimate in self-efficient lawnmowers: robotic mowers that are programmed to maintain lawns on their own and even charge themselves when required. An Automower® is easy to set up and use. Simply define the work area with an easily installed low-voltage boundary wire, programming is as easy as personalising your mobile phone, and once complete, the Automower® will carry out its work quietly, safely and efficiently. Selected models even boast a weather timer that adjusts cutting habits and adapts to lawn growth in line with weather conditions. “The concept behind robotic mowing is to keep grass short. The Automower® cuts consistently, in irregular patters covering every blade of grass to create a smooth surface and consistency. Since the grass is cut more often than traditional mowing, the tiny clippings act as a natural fertiliser for the lawn, which improves the grass condition and prevents the growth of moss.” Husqvarna Automower® features include: • Razor sharp pivoting blades to deliver a cleaner cut without damaging grass

• Fitted with lift, tilt and collision sensors that trigger cutting blades to stop automatically • Theft protection systems such as an alarm, PIN codes and installation lock • Electrically powered by a high-performance Lithium-Ion battery means no harmful exhaust emissions and a much quieter performance between 58-61dB (A), dependent on the model.

Making it Business isn’t for the faint hearted. Roughly only 20 percent of businesses are still in operation after their first year. The good news for those who are is that the longer a business lasts, the more likely it is to continue lasting.

In 2015 when Crown Worldwide Group, who enjoys a turnover of more than $800 million, reached its 50th anniversary, founder Jim Thompson shared with Entrepreneur magazine six tips to building a business that will last decades: 1.Be in for a bumpy ride “It is rarely ever a smooth ride. You have to be the type of person that will persevere and push through all of those challenges,” he said. 2. Have a plan and know how much it will cost “Having a plan and knowing where you are going is key for any new business, and part of that is having adequate funding. “Just how much you need is difficult to define because it depends on what type of business you are running. In our case we started out with very little capital but in the modern era, I wouldn’t recommend that.” 3. Know your core values “It is easy to think core values are something you only worry about when the

business is already successful. But in fact the reverse is true: Core values are what make you successful in the first place." 4.Learn to delegate and choose good people “It is not possible to do everything yourself in a successful business - you need to delegate. 5. Determination is more important than education “A degree of formal education is helpful for anybody and I encourage it. But having a degree is not an essential part of being successful as an entrepreneur. The qualities you do need are a lot of stamina and determination.” 6. Don’t sell too quickly “Retain ownership of your business if you can. Don’t give it away or sell too early. “So many entrepreneurs today say, ‘I’m going to run it for five years then sell it.’ But I don’t think that’s what true entrepreneurs do. Instead, that’s being a speculator.”

Claim games Do you know what business expenses you can claim? By Natalia Rietveld

Claiming back expenses can be a tricky business and there a few sneaky tips that are always good to know. For example - if you shout coffee for meeting purposes and decide to drink it at the café, you can only claim back 50 percent of the cost back - whereas if you order takeaway and have it at the office, you can claim 100 percent back. Takeaway coffees from here on out!

• Interest on borrowing money for the business

What counts as an expense?

• Home office expenses

Thanks to business.govt.nz for compiling a neat little list of claimable expenses. As they say, “The more you can claim the less tax you’ll pay”, so grab your pen and paper and take note so as not to miss out on any dollars saved.

• Stationery

• Vehicle expenses, transport costs and travel for business purposes

• Rent paid on business premises – including your home

• Depreciation on items like computers and office furniture

• Some insurance premiums • Work-related journals and magazines • Membership fees of professional associations

These exceptions are often found under entertainment expenses. The IRD provides a complete detailed list of these, but here is an abbreviated version for your leisure.

• Work-related mobile phones and phone bills • Tax agent’s fees. They’ve also noted that Inland Revenue supplies a downloadable vehicle logbook template to keep track of your work vehicle costs. It’s said that: if you use it for work - it’s claimable. What sounds too good to be true, usually is – as there are exceptions.

Six steps to flexibility By Natalia Rietveld

Our lives are becoming increasingly hectic. It’s been proven time and again when personal life is well looked after then productivity in the workplace goes up. Understanding your employee’s individual needs and catering for them can often mean adding a level of flexibility to the workplace. Every workplace is different and there will always be different strokes for different folks, but if heightened flexibility has been on your mind, here are a few tips that may help you get started.

“When your boss allows you to perform your tasks away from their gaze, it empowers the worker and benefits the company." - Microsoft’s chief envisioning officer, Dave Coplin

1. Launch a test pilot Practice makes perfect. If you feel you are missing a level of flexibility in your workplace, but you don’t know how to approach it, look at how other people in your situation are handling it and give it a trial run. You will quickly find out what is working and what is not and can tweak it accordingly.

2. Accountability Set the tasks at hand with a deadline. This holds everyone accountable and ensures the work needing to be done is still getting done, but allows for a work/life balance. You gain trust in yourself when you feel trusted by employers. Microsoft’s chief envisioning officer, Dave Coplin, told Metro, “When your boss allows you to perform your tasks away from their gaze, it empowers the worker and benefits the company.” Not everyone works best between 9-5, but if the work is getting done, there’s no issue.

3. Production meetings Host meetings so you know where everyone is at. These should be held at least once a week initially to better establish how the strategies are affecting everyone. If you’re dealing with those who are working from home, Skype meetings work a treat.

"If a business is good, does good, and makes others feel good, then it creates its own legacy." - Sir Richard Branson

4. Know your hurdles There is always going to be hurdles to overcome, unfortunately that’s life. The best way to overcome hurdles and avoid mountains is to prepare yourself for them. There’s no point burying your head in the sand and expecting smooth sailing ahead, but by following steps five and six any hurdle will stay just that, a small hurdle.

5. Keep open communication “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s to listen to your staff,” Sir Richard Branson told Mediaplanet. Be honest with each other and talk to your staff openly about what they are enjoying about the increased flexibility and their advice on any changes that need to be made. Employers will see things in a completely different way, so discussing these opinions

and ideas among your team will enable you to reach a new level of understanding.

6. Be understanding And on that note, be open to the ideas that are presented to you. Understand where your staff are coming from. When you feel valued it's second nature to do your best for those who make you feel that way. When it comes to business, and making business work for everyone involved, this man knows it all so we will finish on his wise words: “If a business is good, does good, and makes others feel good, then it creates its own legacy.” – Sir Richard Branson.

Seven ways to improve your memory By Lydia Trusdale

1. Meditaton

5. Mnemonics

“Mindfulness meditation has been reported to enhance numerous mental abilities, including rapid memory recall,” says Catherine Kerr of the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging and the Osher Research Center, both of which are located at Harvard Medical School.

Mnemonic devices are simple techniques a person can use to help them improve their ability to remember something. Some mnemonic techniques include:

“Our discovery that mindfulness meditators more quickly adjusted the brain wave that screens out distraction could explain their superior ability to rapidly remember and incorporate new facts.”

2. Diet Studies suggest a diet rich in antioxidants, phytochemicals and B vitamins may promote improved cognitive function. Phytochemical-rich foods in particular have been long believed to be effective at reversing age-related deficits in memory. Phytochemicals are compounds that are typically found in fruits, vegetables, grains, beans and other plants. Foods containing phytochemicals that are said to improve memory include berries, avocado, fish, dark chocolate and eggs.

• Names: Everyone’s mates with ROY G BIV, aka the colour

spectrum of the rainbow. This is one of the most common and effective example of mnemonics

• Expressions: Creating expression is an equally popular and

effective mnemonic device, for example, using the expression My Very Enthusiastic Mother Just Served Us Noodles to remind you of the order of the plants in our solar system

• Ode/Rhyme: A bit of a hybrid technique, peculiar odes are not uncommon. For example, 30 days hath September.

Music is one of the few activities that engages both sides of the brain simultaneously and positively impacts memory, focus, attention, language skills and physical co-ordination.

3. Exercise A study published in PubMed – the US National Library of Medicine (NLM) – has shown that in both rat and human brains, regular exercise can improve memory recall. In particular, regular exercise can improve cognitive abilities and spatial memory.

4. Sleep Memory consolidation is a distinct process that occurs during sleep to maintain, strengthen and modify memories stored in the long-term memory. In one study, participants were separated into two groups and asked to memorise illustrated cards to test their memory strength. After memorising a set, both groups took a 40-minute break wherein one group napped, and the other stayed awake. After the break, both groups were tested on their memory of the cards – the group who had napped performed significantly better, retaining on average 85 percent of the patterns, compared to 60 percent for those who had remained awake.

6. Learn a second language Adults who speak more than one language are likely to have a better working memory and memorisation skills. Learning a second language is said to increase brain size and connectivity (aka increase your intelligence), improve cognitive skills and overall brain function, and even protect your brain against aging.

A familiar scenario for many is remembering the lyrics to your favourite song from 10 years ago but forgetting what item you popped down to the shops for. Music is one of the few activities that engages both sides of the brain simultaneously and positively impacts memory, focus, attention, language skills and physical coordination.

According to Scientific American, the “doorway effect” exists genetically in every single one of us. A team of researchers from the University of Notre Dame – Gabriel Radvansky, Sabine Krawietz and Andrea Tamplin – established that “memory was worse after passing through a doorway than after walking the same distance within a single room.” Called the encoding specificity principle, psychologists have known for a while that memory works best when the context during testing matches the context during learning.

Radvansky et al call this sort of memory representation an “event model” – walking through a doorway is a good time to purge your event models because whatever happened in the old room is likely to become less relevant now that you have changed venues.

Listening is fine but playing an instrument is even better – kids who learn to play an instrument develop better memories and higher IQs than kids with no musical training.

10 signs

that your emotional intelligence needs work EI accounts for 85 to 90 percent of success at work. If you are displaying any of the following 10 signs, you may need to work on your own level of EI. 1. You’re easily stressed and irritated A strong feature of emotional intelligence is the ability to understand emotions and recognise when you are feeling them. This enables you to better control emotions and not get overly stressed. If you get easily irritated and lose your temper, without consideration of how this may affect behaviour towards others, you may want to take some steps to raise your emotional awareness, such as meditation and selfreflection.

2. You treat people rashly and unfairly The key to improving this aspect is raising self-awareness of how you react in situations, and recognising the emotional triggers so that you can exert more control over them. Becoming more empathetic towards others will also help.

3. You are wrapped up in your own world This is obviously problematical if you are a leader. Listening to and taking an active interest in people is very important and comes from developing empathy, as we all have the power to empathise with others. It’s a case of treating others as a priority and placing ourselves in their shoes for a while.

4. You are over-confident Emotionally intelligent people are confident and authoritative because they are comfortable in their own skin – but they do not brag, assume they know it all, or appear over-confident. The latter is often a sign of insecurity and low EI. Work on this by increasing self-awareness and being honest with yourself: understand your strengths and weaknesses and be better prepared for situations when these will be exposed.

5. You fear change

0800 444 090 | www.fatweb.co.nz

14 | October 2017    www.canterburytoday.co.nz

Flexibility comes with the confidence of knowing exactly who you are and what you are capable of. Many people fear the thought of change and are more adaptable, in reality, than they suspect. People with EI embrace change and are ready for whatever is thrown at them.

6. You take failure badly Work on your sense of resilience and you will find that you start to treat failure less as a permanent obstacle and more as a temporary opportunity to improve.

7. You get into conflicts easily Raising your awareness and empathy towards others increases your EI and actually makes you more thick-skinned. You are better able to read other people’s emotions, more likely to consider their feelings, better able to reach compromises, and less likely to be surprised by others. This will naturally reduce conflict.

8. You interrupt and don’t listen People with high EI practice their listening skills and body language, ask open questions, avoid distractions, and display a genuine interest in the other person. They don’t interrupt and are often able to ‘read’ the emotions behind the words.

People with high EI practice their listening skills and body language, ask open questions, avoid distractions, and display a genuine interest in the other person.

9. You find fault with others easily This is because they lack the empathy, listening skills and awareness to appreciate the positive side of another person; they only see the negatives. People with high emotional intelligence are able to remain positive, avoid unconstructive and negative conversations about others, and surround themselves with other positive people.

10. Your relationships break down Strong relationships need a healthy dose of emotional intelligence. So, unless you work on improving all the elements outlined in the first nine points above, it’s likely that relationship ‘problems’ will be common. Building rapport will be difficult and people may even start avoiding you. Those with high EI know how to build strong relationships based on mutual trust and respect and understand that, without emotional intelligence, relationships invariably suffer. IQ is a threshold competence. You need it, but it doesn’t make you a star - emotional intelligence can.

Strangle your stress By Natalia Rietveld

Leave your work at the door says executive business and lifestyle coach Lesley Colcord. As hard as that may seem when your head is overcome with the tsunami that is your workload, the best way to hit the wave front on and ride it out is with a clear and relaxed mind.

“Many people don’t take the time to sit down and write out and explore what is on their mind.” And when stress sets in Lesley says “sadly it is our creativity that leaves the door.” And more often than not that ‘creativity’ is what is needed to find the solution to issues faced.

Business people and entrepreneurs alike can get so caught up in their work life that it begins to dominate them. What people tend to forget is we work to support our chosen lifestyles. Personal life and happiness should always be top priority, Lesley says.

One advantage that an entrepreneur may have over a corporate executive, Lesley has found, is that entrepreneurs have often built businesses based on their hobbies and natural strengths. This makes it a lot easier for them to relax in the workplace and for lack of a better term – lighten up.

It’s the only way to put your best foot forward come Monday.

This makes weekend wonders much more important for those in the corporate world.

If you’ve ever found yourself feeling overwhelmed and overrun by your work take a step back.

It’s not a matter of climbing a mountain every weekend or following the teachings of Buddha, though go ahead if that tickles your fancy, it’s all about finding what works best for you and actually putting it into practice.

Ask yourself what is working well in your life and what needs working on? This is the first question Lesley will ask each of her clients. The motion of putting it down on paper is “pretty cathartic” and it gives one the ability to evaluate the situation and break the “vicious cycle of overthinking”. Question whether you are spending enough time with friends and family, are you taking the opportunity to experience the greater things in life?

“It’s about reconnecting to the things that bring you joy and sense of purpose outside of the office stresses.” Reconnect, exercise, take up knitting, whatever it may be just don’t let your weekend become a mere extension of your working week. Take time out to enjoy yourself, to reflect and prepare - your following week will thank you for it.

THE MARTZ EFFECT By Lydia Truesdale

Like the gift that keeps on giving, a single piece of advice that Martz Witty’s father imparted on him has steered Martz through a succession of businesses, a divorce and two retirement attempts, to the head of an empire he built from scratch.

Management | Cover story To top it off, he’s done it all while refuting the notion that there’s no place for fun in the realm of the professional elite. The piece of advice in question? That it’s the journey, not the destination. And as Martz adds, “Destinations have a habit of being a moveable feast, which is just terrific!”

You schmoose, you most-certainlydo-not lose When I arrived at the new offices of the Martz Group I expected a hospitable reception, but had I known what I was stepping into, I would have arrived a lot earlier. Things were off to a great start when I was presented with an elaborate drinks menu to peruse. I chose a Coke, as many a millennial would, and it was delivered on a tray accompanied by a snack-size packet Tim Tam. Coke and Tim Tams literally delivered on a platter – had somebody tipped them off? No, they hadn’t. This calibre of hospitality is what the Martz Group has become renowned for and why employees and clients alike genuinely look forward to their time spent with the Group. Any good businessperson knows that good hospitality extends to more than just the present moment – it has a lasting, direct result on personal and professional attitudes and ergo, on the success of the businesses those persons attach themselves to. After spending only minutes in Martz’s presence it became clear that the iconic, contagiously sociable ambience was a genuine, living, breathing, 4D result of company culture at its finest, and one that filters down from the top, from Martz himself. I had entered the stratosphere of the Martz Group and I had been struck by the Martz effect.

“Business growth doesn’t necessarily mean bigger. At the beginning of an assignment we have to work out what success is for that person. Whatever it is, if we can measure it we can manage it in business.” - Martz Witty

As it turns out it was the right move and Martz has never looked back. The same cheek remains, only it’s been tamed into playful professionalism.

Personal visits to the clients’ home or office are not uncommon. Success means something different to everyone but for Martz personally, one of his fundamental beliefs is that the purpose of a business is to sell it. His resume is naturally a colourful one and it reads something like this: owner of over 23 businesses over the years, past president of SWAP Christchurch (Salespeople With A Purpose), past national president and current accredited member of the National Speakers Association, committee member for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA), author, and recipient of the prestigious Te Kahurangi award for his outstanding contribution to the speaking profession. Don’t make the mistake of confounding Martz’s fervour for fun as unprofessional, though. “A personal goal is to be the very best at my craft, and therein lies a path of constant reinvention and training.” Martz has long been proud of New Zealand’s rich cultural history and in 2005 he began learning Te Reo Maori through Te Wananga O Aotearoa, and in 2014 he achieved TARM Level 5.

“One of the biggest hindrances to success is not asking for help and worse, not accepting help.”

Right now the global business landscape is enduring one of its more volatile periods, where the merger of automation with traditional manual processes is threatening many roles within many fields, and many businesses themselves.

- Martz Witty

“One of the biggest hindrances to success is not asking for help and worse, not accepting help,” Martz believes.

He’s admittedly proud of the tall poppies in the Group’s midst who are celebrated, not criticised, for exceling and inspiring achievement in others. He notes they are an excellent example of the successes that can be enjoyed across the board when individuals and their achievements are lauded.

When asked to offer a single piece of advice to those who aren’t sure where they sit during this merger, or what move to make next, it was this: “It’s better to make the wrong decision than no decision.” There’s a lot to be learned from making mistakes in business and in the midst of a technical revolution, it’s costly to not adopt change. Sure, early adoption runs the risk of not quite being the right fit at the right time, but at least it’s proof if your customers ever needed it that you are looking toward the future, you are willing to embrace change, and you’re excited about how you can continue to develop your business’ capabilities to offer your clients a service that either meets industry demand or paves the way for the rest of the industry. Martz believes failed businesses generally sit in one of two categories: either they failed to evolve quickly enough, or they failed to evolve at all. I’m suggesting a third category: they failed to seek the help of the Martz Group. CT

UP IN SMOKE Clearing the air about marijuana’s medical benefits By Lydia Truesdale

For years studies have purported to show that marijuana use has a wide range of ill health effects, but recent research has shown positive results in the field of medicinal use. How can that be? Marijuana, also known as cannabis, comes from the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica plant. The plant contains the mind-altering chemical THC that acts on specific brain cell receptors that ordinarily react to natural THC-like chemicals. These natural chemicals play a large role in brain development and function. Marijuana is a psychoactive drug. Its ‘high’ can last up to 12 hours and can make people feel more relaxed, alter the senses and cause time distortion. Unlike other illegal drugs, no one has ever been reported dead from a marijuana overdose. Marijuana is not classed as addictive however it can lead to ‘substance use disorder’. Historical research has reported negative short-term health effects to include anxiety or paranoia and impaired thinking, judgement, co-ordination and memory. Negative long-term effects have said to include breathing problems like coughing , excess mucus, bronchitis, and worsening of conditions like schizophrenia, asthma and cystic fibrosis. Marijuana use during pregnancy can also harm a baby’s brain development. In the Ministry of Health’s Cannabis Use 2012/13: New Zealand Health Survey it found that eight percent of cannabis users reported a time in the last 12 months that cannabis use had a harmful effect on their mental health. Younger cannabis users were more affected, with reported harm to mental health decreasing markedly by age 55 plus. On the other hand, further, more recent studies have shown marijuana can provide significant relief for pain and nausea, as well as well as helping to control epilepsy. It is not yet proven if marijuana is linked to lung cancer, but according to a study published in Journal of the American Medical Association in January 2012, marijuana does not impair lung function and can even increase lung capacity. Another study, by Harvard, into the health effects of recreational and medical use concluded that, “Early research shows cannabidiol and its derivatives hold potential promise in additional conditions like drug-resistant epilepsy and some psychiatric disorders (e.g., anxiety, substance use disorders, schizophrenia, and psychosis).” The drug has been steadily growing in popularity for medical applications and is now legal for medicinal purposes in at least 20 countries worldwide. So here we are: some scientific studies conclude that marijuana use is harmful, others claim it to be a medical 18 | October 2017    www.canterburytoday.co.nz

miracle. A recently-concluded New Zealand longitudinal study, conducted in part by researchers at Duke University, appears to finally clear the air.

“It [marijuana] doesn’t have a high potential for abuse, and there are very legitimate medical applications. In fact, sometimes marijuana is the only thing that works,” he wrote.

The study is perhaps the most comprehensive into the subject yet: it monitored a cohort of 1037 individuals, born in Dunedin in 1972 and 1973, over 38 years, testing whether cannabis use from age 13 to 38 was associated with health effects at 38. It assessed frequency of cannabis use and cannabis dependence at ages 18, 21, 26, 32 and 38 years.

In another recent study on twins, those who used marijuana showed a significant decline in general knowledge and in verbal ability, equivalent to four IQ points, between the preteen years and early adulthood. But no predictable difference was found between twins when one used marijuana and the other didn’t.

It found that the people who started smoking marijuana heavily in their teens, and had an ongoing marijuana use disorder, lost an average of eight IQ points between ages 13 and 38. The lost mental abilities didn’t fully return in those who quit marijuana as adults. Interestingly, those who started smoking marijuana as adults didn’t show notable IQ declines, indicating that heavy or long term marijuana users only suffer poor mental abilities if they began using before their brain had developed in full.

“It [marijuana] doesn’t have a high potential for abuse, and there are very legitimate medical applications. In fact, sometimes marijuana is the only thing that works.” - Neurosurgeon and CNN chief medical correspondent, Sanjay Gupta

It concluded that “Cannabis use for up to 20 years is associated with periodontal disease but is not associated with other physical health problems in early midlife”. This is not the only notable New Zealand study on the matter. The World Health Organisation in 1998 released a report that agreed with the New Zealand Ministry of Health’s report Cannabis: the public health issues 1995-1996 in acknowledging that the consumption of alcohol and tobacco are more harmful than the use of cannabis. Neurosurgeon and CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Sanjay Gupta, offers further explanation into the division on the matter. In 2009 Gupta penned a TIME Magazine article entitled ‘Why I would vote No on Pot’, but recently while in the process of making his documentary Weed, he changed his stance from being anti- to pro-legalisation of cannabis in the medical field.

This suggests that the IQ decline in marijuana users may be caused by something other than marijuana, such as shared familial factors, for example, genetics and family environment. In medicinal-specific studies, researchers have learnt there are at least two active chemicals in marijuana that they think have medicinal application. Those are cannabidiol (CBD) — which seems to impact the brain without a high — and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — which has pain relieving properties. Public opinion is congruent with recent, further research showing positive results in the field of medicinal marijuana. The New Zealand Drug Foundation’s August 2017 poll showed support is growing for a cannabis law reform. The poll was conducted by National Party pollsters Curia and showed that overall, 81 percent of voters supported allowing medical cannabis for patients with terminal illnesses. It remains a somewhat divisive topic for New Zealand leaders, however. At the first leaders’ debate, Labour leader Jacinda Arden took all of three seconds to say her party would absolutely look at legalising marijuana for medicinal use.

“We have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologise for my own role in that,” he told CNN in an interview.

Prime Minister Bill English, who has up until now claimed he’s happy with New Zealand’s current cannabis laws, used his full 30 seconds to state that National would be happy with more liberal access to medicinal marijuana, but in the form of controlled cannabinoid products that have passed clinical trials, just as every other government-approved drug must do.

He found in a search of medical studies from the past year that only six percent investigated potential benefits of the drug, rather than its harms.

One thing is for certain: comprehensive research continues on the matter and will only add depth to a growing portfolio of studies offering accurate and insightful results. CT

Stunning Crowne Plaza injects vibrancy into Christchurch’s CBD When the new Crowne Plaza Christchurch opened its doors in early July, even experienced and seasoned staff were taken by surprise by the numbers of visitors and locals who poured through the doors. They knew the return of the Crowne Plaza brand to the city had been eagerly-awaited, with Cantabrians excitedly following progress in design and development changes to the building on the corner of Colombo and Armagh streets.

heart of Christchurch has a renewed energy and vibrant buzz.

But they weren’t quite expecting the hotel’s Café 1851 and Market Place restaurant to be humming with hundreds of guests from the moment the lights were on and signs out.

Rising above the Christchurch cityscape, the 4.5-star hotel is the largest upscale hotel in the Christchurch CBD, featuring 204 spacious and modern rooms, including eight suites, with unique views to the city, coast, hills and Southern Alps.

“There was a huge sense of excitement on opening weekend, as well as relief that we’d finally got there after years of planning and hard work by our owners and our hotel company, InterContinental Hotels Group,” says general manager Reinier Eulink. “It was a brilliant response from our local market. Overall feedback was that people were impressed with the design changes to the building, and delighted to share in the sense of satisfaction that the

“The opening is a significant milestone for the city recognised by locals, our civic, business and tourism leaders, as well as national government.”

Reinier returned to Christchurch to open the hotel, having most recently spent five successful years leading Crowne Plaza Queenstown. Before that, he spent 18 months as GM for IHG at Holiday Inn City Centre Christchurch. Focus | Crowne Plaza Christchurch Fresh design approach The stunning end result was nothing more than ideas and concepts when Aucklandbased design agency Designworks started with a blank canvas for the hotel’s interior design. From the outset they aimed to bring a new, creative energy not only to the hotel, but the heart of the city. Designworks focused on delivering a creative guest experience based around being welcomed into the property, and how that flowed into relaxation, eating and working across the entire hotel. “Our brief was to create a premium 4.5-star hotel experience that put a ‘fresh spin’ on the Crowne Plaza brand as well as making it work locally, and to ignite the theatre and drama of the nearby Performing Arts Precinct,” says architect Naomi Rushmer. “As the city’s largest hotel, attracting locals and those from across the globe, the design needed to deliver an exciting and unique experience maximising 360-degree views of the Port Hills, Southern Alps and Pacific Ocean.” On arrival at the hotel, guests are greeted with a boldly-crafted interior featuring timber slats wrapping the walls, accentuating height and anchoring the lobby space. A large freeform mesh ceiling feature glows over the reception pods, inspired by the winding Avon River. The space connects to the adjacent Social Wine Bar through a striking doubled-sided central fireplace.

“Overall feedback was that people were impressed with the design changes to the building, and delighted to share in the sense of satisfaction that the heart of Christchurch has a renewed energy and vibrant buzz.” - General manager Reinier Eulink

That impressive fireplace adds real drama and mood to the space, and is a drawcard for all with its inviting plush seating and gorgeous rugs. Full-height windows flood the ground floor with natural daylight, and dramatic lighting brings the spaces to life, changing mood and atmosphere, as dusk falls. A grand open staircase connects to first floor dining, library and meeting rooms, and feature carpets and rugs draw inspiration from the braided rivers and topography of the South Island. The hotel’s stunning world-class design has seen it win a finalists’ spot in a national design award. >

breads of europe Owning and operating a wholesale bakery was a long-standing ambition for talented baker Brian Cook, and with his wife Lydia Schroder by his side, this dream became a reality in October 2015. Luckily business ownership was not new to either of them, in fact it was because of the success from their previous bakery, Una Bakery in Huntsbury, that they found themselves as the new owners of Breads of Europe, Lydia explains. “We needed another baker at Una Bakery and Brian heard through one of our reps that Breads of Europe had a baker available. After meeting with the operations manager, Brian found out that the previous owners were looking for a quick sale.”

Unlike most pre-packaged products you’ll find on the shelves, Breads of Europe’s European bread range contain no preservatives, emulsifiers or additives. It’s true and honest home-style baking, stripped right back to the basics – exactly how it’s meant to be. One of the many highlights Breads of Europe has enjoyed over the last two years was the recent opening of Christchurch’s Crowne Plaza Hotel. Breads of Europe was chosen to supply their venues and Lydia says they could not be more pleased. “They were looking for someone who could do a really good range of handmade products that look European and rustic and we perfectly hit that brief.

SKILLED BAKERS NEEDED Breads of Europe are after a highly skilled and spirited team of bakers that share their personal pride in production. You will have: • Drive • Ambition • Relevant qualifications • At least 3 years’ experience on the job. In return, you become part of a team that know the true art behind old-fashioned artisan breads and pastries with a modern twist and a team who are truly passionate about everything they produce.

“That was really exciting for us,” Lydia says.

BREADS OF EUROPE’S RANGE OF PRODUCTS INCLUDE:

Lydia with her background in hospitality management and Brian who has been a passionate baker since his school days, discovered their rustic-styled creations had quite a knack for selling themselves.

Breads of Europe’s bread and pastry products are available at select Super Value and Fresh Choice supermarkets around Christchurch including the new Fresh Choice City Market in the heart of Christchurch’s up and coming CBD. Many New World and Pak N Save delicatessens around the South Island also stock their range of pies and quiches.

• Loaves and rolls • Specialty breads • Sweet baking • Danish and pastries • Pies and savories • Special diet products

What customers loved about Una Bakery is what has made Breads of Europe so popular and two years down the track, business is booming. All their clientele has come to them due to their expansive range of artisan, wholesome baking, the kind that brings childhood memories flooding in.

Lydia has always believed when it comes to their products ‘fresh is best’ and supply daily to local outlets. When demand calls Breads of Europe will supply special events throughout the South Island and delight in keeping Forsyth Barr Stadium well stocked.

THE GOODS

“The next focus for us is getting the right team in place so we can maintain what we have worked so hard to achieve.”

And as they say – the rest is history.

Breads of Europe’s delectable breads, pies and sweet treats are baked fresh every morning.

TILES WITH DESIGN AND STYLE Designastyle is honoured to have been involved in New Zealand’s largest renovation project – the restoration of the grand Crowne Plaza Christchurch hotel. The newly refurbished Crown Plaza now stands proudly on the site of the former Forsyth Bar office towers, just opposite Victoria Park and the original site of the Crowne Plaza. Designastyle was entrusted to supply and install the tiles for the 204-room executive-style hotel, including the bathrooms, public bathrooms, kitchen, show kitchen, breakfast buffet area, bar, Level one floor, library, conference room, entranceway, café, BOH, elevators and lift lobby feature. Working closely with the clients throughout; it delivered a superior service that produced, true to its reputation, the highest of quality finishes, on time. Delivering such a result requires an acquired eye and Designastyle has a proven history of achieving excellence. It has been tasked with a number of specialty projects over the years, stretching from residential to commercial and it takes pride in not only perfecting its brief, but doing so to an extent that exceeds clients’ expectations. Its longevity in the industry and its loyal, ever-increasing clientele are testaments to the genuine passion the Designastyle team has for what they do. They source only the finest European tiles specifically for local settings and installation takes place with the greatest respect and precision. “Tiles are a great way to make a statement. Sinead works alongside Designastyle owner/director Grant Mulholland, showroom manager Mel James and tile design consultant Rochelle Porter in somewhat of a super team that offers a combined five decades of experience. Together they offer a fully personalised design process that dedicates itself to considering the colour, texture, size, shape, suitability and sustainability of tiles, to maximise the value and appeal of desired spaces. Aside from an obvious calibre of luxury, European tiles are also longwearing, being produced to high industry standards. The manufacturing processes are strictly regulated, governed with sustainability in mind, and comply with European environment standards therefore insuring less pollution and damage to the environment. Check out Designastyle’s Christchurch showroom at 35 Mandeville Street, Riccarton to experience first-hand its ability to bring to life a space through clever design, tile selection and finishing.

20 years of creating enriching spaces While it is hardly contestable that a business’ success depends first and foremost on enabling its staff members, few are able to truly master the creation of an environment that empowers, educates and encourages excellence in equal measure. Dalman Architects is a refreshing exception; its talented team of 24 registered architects, architectural technicians and interior designers have successfully endured over two decades of market leadership, contributing to the delivery of architecture and interior design services held in the highest regard in Christchurch, wider New Zealand and Asia Pacific. The enduring vision is to create enriching spaces, and the team excels with merit when making this vision a reality. Established in 1997, the business celebrated 20 years of award-winning performance in August 2017, returning to one of the city’s most magnificent venues to celebrate - The Great Hall at the Christchurch Arts Centre - a fitting tribute to Dalman Architects own compelling projects. The business transcends multiple project sectors and has been the recipient of 35

awards, yet the genuine humility of the business’ leaders belies the true extent of its success. At the helm of the organisation are five directors - Richard Dalman, John McGrail, Brett Ridley, Anton Tritt and Ron Noordjik. Richard Dalman offers insight to the business’ longevity saying, “We are proud of reaching 20 years. Over that period of time we have seen some good times and bad times with the economy, but we have managed to not only stay in business but do well. “While we win a lot of awards, these aren’t the reason why we do what we do. As architects and interior designers, we are passionate about the buildings and spaces we create with our clients.” While the business has ultimately contemporised to keep pace with evolving tastes, technological developments and new innovations, its founding principles have always remained the same.

These include: creative thinking, a responsive process, excellence standards, going above and beyond in all work, and enriching the way people live, work and play. This successful alchemy is clearly valued and embraced by the organisation, its clients and its partners. “Our focus has always been on excellence and not dropping our standards. We produce high quality work from our design and documentation through to our client relationships and what our clients want,” Richard says. With extensive experience across diverse industries, from hotels, restaurants and bars

through to aged care and retirement, Dalman Architects’ commercial portfolio has recently acquired a stunning addition - its very own central city studio. In April this year, the team proudly relocated back into the central city on the corner of Colombo and Peterborough Streets. The Honourable Lianne Dalziel, Mayor of Christchurch, cut the red ribbon at the ceremony; an exciting celebration recognising an important milestone in the business’ history. The opening coincided with a refresh of the brand’s identity, which was unveiled on the night and marked the beginning of a new era.

The studio is now home to projects being undertaken throughout New Zealand including in Christchurch, Invercargill, Wellington and Auckland. A significant project in the latter geography is the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Queen Street, which is the debut hotel for this brand in New Zealand. The metamorphosis of the development is nothing short of impressive - boasting 255 guest rooms, the hotel has evolved from a 19 level office building and offers stunning views of Auckland City along with an all-day dining restaurant, bar and lounge, conference and meeting spaces.

Dalman Architects work in Christchurch Locally, Dalman Architects has a number of new additions to its already comprehensive portfolio, testament to its broad skillset. These include the following:

Dalman Architects Studio Dalman Architects’ flagship studio is clad with timber battens of various widths that represent the ancient totara forest that used to inhabit the area. A full height, red pivoting door on the Colombo Street side opens into an exhibition space. At the centre of the office is the ‘Totara Room’; a space fully lined inside and out with totara tongue and groove boards, creating a warm texture against the slate-coloured tile floor. To the north-side of the office space is a 20-foot shipping container that was converted into a meeting room. Adjacent to the open plan office, a ‘waka’ shaped table occupies the lunch room and comfortably seats all staff.

The Salvation Army Christchurch City Worship and Community Centre A fundamental asset in the Christchurch community unifying people from all walks of life, the Gracefield Development in Colombo Street has centralised the various Salvation Army functions throughout Christchurch into one purpose-built complex. The building is multi-faceted consisting of a worship hall, offices, meeting rooms and sports hall, each serving a unique and important purpose in their own right. The different spaces have been positioned around a cross laid out on the site, which forms the major circulation through the development.

Focus | Dalman Architects “We hold ourselves to a very high standard not only in the projects we undertake but in respect to the work we commission from our strategic partners,” Richard explains of the business’ projects.

Looking to the future Dalman comments; “We aim to keep working throughout New Zealand and are very much committed to continuing our work in Christchurch and greater Canterbury.

“We have always strived to work at the top end of the market and are proud of the relationships we have formed and maintained with the other consultants and builders who share the same ambitions.

“Following the earthquakes, a lot of new architects came to town, and we would expect as the work slows down, that a lot will disappear. We are here to stay, however, and I am proud of what we have achieved. We will always be here working in Christchurch, and of course we will continue our work throughout New Zealand and offshore.”

“Within our company we have a culture of respect and doing our best and we share these philosophies with our clients, the builders, consultants and suppliers we work with. “How we treat each other is so important and this is something that the business focuses on with its own staff. People do like working here and that’s key.”

A talented collective While there are many projects worthy of mention and commendation, Dalman refers to a recent win as being a benchmark for the business’ success - Te Waonui Forest Retreat- the recipient of the Best Hotel Architecture Award in the 2016 Asia Pacific Property Awards. The 5-star eco-lux hotel incorporates many sustainable design principles and is a soft timbered building designed to meld into the existing native bush. A quiet and protected rainforest courtyard ensures the 100 guest rooms have a restful feel and provides guests with a 100 percent New Zealand experience.

“While we win a lot of awards, these aren’t the reason why we do what we do. As architects and interior designers, we are passionate about the buildings and spaces we create with our clients.” - Richard Dalman

Dalman Architects designed the hotel using environmentally sustainable principles, and it is a shining light for hotel sustainability in New Zealand.

True testament to this fact is that there a number of staff at Dalman Architects who have committed 10 years and in some instances 15 years' of service to the organisation. “They add a significant amount of value to all that we do.”

Hohepa delivers independence, purpose and pride For over 50 years Hohepa has been creating opportunities for people with an intellectual disability in Canterbury. The organisation offers services and support for adults with an intellectual disability – from computer classes, to getting their hands dirty on a farm, to providing a place to live. Currently the organisation is supporting over 100 people within Canterbury and this support ranges from educational workshops to residential support.

“Our focus is on getting people involved in the community, doing things they like. It is hugely varied - no two days are ever the same and we ensure people keep growing as individuals,” says Hohepa Canterbury’s general manager Arnah Trelease. Nestled at the foot of the Port Hills, the Barrington Street campus offers many educational, sporting and cultural activities. Nine kilometres away, the Halswell farm provides a wonderful rural environment. At Barrington, activities include: cycling, music, bread baking, preserves, arts and crafts, exploring Maori culture and current affairs. Fitness rooms are very popular and a range of therapies include massage, art, eurythmy (movement therapy), and speech and drama. For those who enjoy singing, there is a choir and performances are provided on special occasions. Barrington also supports a mix of houses and flats, with some houses nearby in the community. At the Halswell Farm, tunnel houses are full of thriving flowers and vegetables, and give people a chance to get their hands dirty. As well as gardening, the farm has chickens and a community garden with raised beds and wheelchair access so it is a place for everyone to enjoy. This campus also supports seven residential homes, the Gaia Activity Centre and hobby gardens.

General manager Arnah Trelease has been with Hohepa Canterbury for 18 months and says she has always worked within the disability sector, whether volunteering while still at school or working for different organisations throughout New Zealand. However, in recent roles she has moved away from a hands-on experience. “I took this role

because it brings me closer to influencing the lives of people with disabilities.” Arnah is also closely involved with New Zealand’s other Hohepa branches in Auckland, Hawke’s Bay and Kapiti, as the organisation works towards bringing the regions together.

Dementia service Each region has its strengths, and Hohepa Canterbury has developed a dementia service. Hohepa is the only provider in Canterbury offering a specialised service for intellectually disabled people with dementia. This is a vital service and includes support for people with dementia, many of whom have Downs Syndrome and are at higher risk of developing the condition.

Support contract Canterbury also offers flexible support as part of a contract aimed at school leavers and other people with individualised funding packages. Currently nine people have a support contract where they buy the services they need from the organisation. A recent example of this are three men who are renting a house in Ilam who look after their own groceries and rent payments, and contract Hohepa to provide a few hours support each week. Focus | Fonterra Clandeboye

Fonterra Clandeboye - a project of significance Fonterra is well on the way to being able to meet the increasing global demand for mozzarella, as the Clandeboye site expansion passes half way. The new $240 million plant will increase Fonterra’s capacity to produce its revolutionary individual quick frozen (IQF) mozzarella. The new plant is the single biggest foodservice investment in New Zealand dairy history and, upon completion, will make Fonterra Clandeboye the largest producer of natural mozzarella in the Southern Hemisphere. Spanning more than 9,000 square metres, the new plant is 30 percent bigger than the previous one. This comes with economic benefits for Canterbury, with more than 1,000 people across a huge range of industries involved in the build. Fonterra Clandeboye operations lead, Chris Turner says the new mozzarella plant will employ 94 people and a further 18 joining the co-op in other roles across the site to support the new plant. The recruitment process is ongoing at Clandeboye, adding to the current 865 staff members who are helping take Fonterra’s dairy to more than 70 different markets around the world. “We have already identified half of the new team, and are continuing to recruit, with the

goal of identifying the remaining employees by early September,” Chris says. The new jobs, coupled with local pride for the mozzarella, will bring positive changes to the Canterbury region, flowing right through to the community where the dairy industry already employs almost 10,000 people. Full commercial production of the highly sort after cheese is set to begin by September 2018. Sixty percent of the main building is now complete, with the roof expected to be on by October. Chris says the new plant will double current onsite processing capacity of Mozzarella cheese, making enough to top more than half a billion pizzas every year. “We’re expanding our plant at Clandeboye to help meet growing demand for our cheese, which is fast becoming the pizza cheese of choice in China and across wider Asia.” Aoraki Development chief executive, Nigel Davenport says “Fonterra has a massive waterfall effect throughout our district’s economy. From milk pay-outs to farmers,

to employing hundreds of people directly, there are also dozens of local contractor or supplier companies that are also benefiting from the boom in mozzarella exports. “It means our region can continue to expand and offer a wide range of jobs. The 112 additional people who, will be hired for the mozzarella plant, will bring many new families to our beautiful part of the country.”

The site processes up to 12.4 million litres of milk per day, filling 10,000 shipping containers every year of creams, cheese, protein, milk powders – enough to fill 113 Olympic-sized swimming pools. These containers contribute in no small way to the $2.2 billion that the dairy industry contributes to Canterbury each year, only set to increase with the rise in mozzarella supply. >

Focus | Fonterra Clandeboye

Delivering an economic injection By Nigel Davenport, Aoraki Development chief executive

Dairying in various forms has been a big part of the Timaru District and wider South Canterbury Region for over 120 years. In fact, there has been a dairy factory on the same Clandeboye site since 1904. Ongoing investment of Fonterra has added significant value to our local economy both from the direct capital spend, but also the trickle down or the more appropriately named 'waterfall effect' not only locally but throughout the wider South Island. With the Timaru District having a population of 47,000 residents and 25,000 of those in our workforce – the dairy industry (processing and on farm) accounts for over 1,800 workers,

or more than seven percent of the district’s total workforce. Fonterra Clandeboye is a huge part of our local economy and their presence is felt in every corner of our district both economically and socially. There are the obvious direct impacts of the nearly 1,000 employee wage packets coming to local families and the milk payouts to local farmers, but the benefits are even more wide spread. Local infrastructural spend, on improving and expanding roading, bridges and power supply, has alone exceeded $80m in the past 10 years – creating further jobs in these areas. Add to this the impact of Fonterra’s employees and their families on local school roles, sporting club memberships and involvement in local organisations, and you can quickly see why the Timaru District’s relationship with Fonterra is valued so highly. Many local companies have themselves grown alongside Fonterra as a contracted supplier or maintenance company with over 100 of these companies having working relationships with Fonterra Clandeboye.

– 400,000 metric tonnes

• 865 staff • Nine plants, including three milk

powder, two cream, two cheese and two protein plants

It is this kind of development that sets South Canterbury apart as a region and instills confidence for a range of ongoing investment.

• The largest dryer, D3, can produce 25

metric tonnes of milk powder per hour

“The South Canterbury region is tracking very well with strong growth in employment” says Wendy Smith, chief executive of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce.

• The distribution centre packs more than 70 containers per day

• 216 tanker drivers, 76 tankers, each

with a capacity for carting 25,500 litres of milk.

“This has come from a number of factors and is very positive for the community. Strong growth has been experienced in the food manufacturing and processing sectors, and in tourism, with many businesses now actively seeking staff and unemployment at or below three percent.

The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce also enjoys one of the highest participation rates in the country with 520 member businesses - again another clear sign of an engaged and well connected business community. For more information about the chamber, visit www.scchamber.org.nz. CT

With a wide range of excellent schools, affordable housing and with a lifestyle most people can only dream about, the district continues to grow from strength to strength. Average commute time is six to eight minutes to work, the ski fields and lakes just an hour’s drive away.

Agribusiness | Harmer Earthmoving

Getting big projects on the move Harmer Earthmoving takes on giant projects – such as the groundwork for entire irrigation schemes and dairy conversions. With such big projects, the company needed to expand and now has a crew of nearly 40 who firmly believe in getting the job done. Based in Methven, Harmer Earthmoving was founded in 2008. Following expansion in recent years, the business is now made up of three complementary brands: earthmoving, logging and Mt Hutt Lime. Earthmoving is the main part of the business, and employs about 38 people, working on projects throughout the whole of Canterbury. Recent irrigation projects have been completed for Amuri Irrigation, MHV Water, and BCI Scheme. However, the team turns its hand to all jobs, specialising in forestry work, land conversions, landfill, effluent ponds and systems, irrigation and dams, subdivision and roading, mining and civil works. “We can do anything from dairy conversions to irrigation pipelines, large building sites and land clearance. We’ll take on just about anything,” says owner Jon Harmer. “We do all the groundwork. For example, we will take on an entire project such as an irrigation scheme, do all the installations, set

it all up and subcontract all the civil contractors as well. “We harness our local knowledge and expertise to deliver innovative earthmoving solutions which get the job done.” The company will also act as project manager, dealing with the operations on large building sites. Harmer Earthmoving and Logging has an extensive range with over 50 pieces of plant and machinery. “Our fleet of trucks, trailers, diggers, dozers, graders, skidders, loaders and dumpers enable us to get the job done in the most efficient manner. All plant and equipment is maintained in excellent condition and we have a full service workshop to complete all planned and required maintenance.” Jon continues to work closely with his father, who founded the business. “I bought the excavators and trucks, he kept the bulldozers, and we now co-own Mt Hutt Lime Ltd, but we still work together in all aspects of the job.”

Harmer Logging Harmer Logging runs two logging crews which deliver a range of logging and support

services. One crew, with four employees, is fully mechanical and handles large plantations and large woodlots. The other crew of three is set up for larger trees, and deals with smaller plantations and precision felling. The choice of logging system, used to fell trees and remove the logs, is dictated by factors such as the size of the area to be harvested, access to the site, the slope of the land and the type of soil.

New Zealand is renowned for being in the top tier of timber producers worldwide. Annually about two million cubic metres of NZ timber is exported to huge foreign markets including China, the United States, Australia, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific.

The company also supplies high-grade agricultural lime for spreading on farm paddocks. The lime works is half owned by Jon and his wife, Emma, and his father and mother, Jack and Jeanette Harmer.

Vast experience

Throughout the business’ history there have been many changes, from the early years of being one of the leading whiteware agents, to now providing specialised installations and service needs.

Jeremy has been in the refrigeration engineering trade since leaving school in 1994. He began at Polarcold Cool Stores at the Timaru Port and completed his apprenticeship there. During his apprenticeship he was awarded first place in the New Zealand Apprenticeship Advanced Trade Certificate.

“We have carried on with a great team of all qualified staff from the previous owners and recently employed more staff to meet our customers’ needs. With many day-to-day breakdown callouts and pre-arranged work, we continue to be busy.” CT

Jadie McDonald was employed part time at Thompson’s Refrigeration for about three years. With the couple’s three children now all at school age, Jadie works full-time in the office. “With the passing of the late Sid Thompson (founder of Thompson’s Refrigeration), we thought it was the right time to help carry on the proud local South Canterbury name.”

Goods & Services | Canterbury Swim School

A great way to realise potential Canterbury Swim School is much more than just a swim school; their approach to swimming is holistic and the skills gained will last a lifetime. Director Jennifer (Jenny) Jones sums it up when she says everyone enjoys something different and when participants offer rave reviews no two are the same. “Some people enjoy diving or tumble turns, some enjoy mastering the butterfly stroke, others just enjoy the social aspect it has to offer.” There seems to be one resounding theme among swimmers though and that is added confidence. For Jenny, seeing people’s self-confidence grow is her motivation. “Seeing the confidence in children grow when they are not particularly confident to begin with and watching them learn to love it can lead on to greater confidence in other aspects of their lives. “Parents will say because their children have gained so much confidence in swimming, have found their niche, they have begun to improve academically as well.” Jenny says she notices life skills developing particularly when people start to compete in the sport because they have to be so organised.

“Parents will say because their children have gained so much confidence in swimming, have found their niche, they have begun to improve academically as well.” - Jenny Jones

“It can be a demanding sport so they have to show dedication and be on top of time management. It just helps them in so many ways.” Jenny has been coaching swimming for the past 20 years. Fellow director Huia Mikara has been coaching for more than 30. Their dedication to swimming over the years was recognised by national body Swimming New Zealand in 2015 when they were both

presented with Service Awards for their contribution to the sport. Chris Hurley is also a director of the company, bringing with him comprehensive business skills and expertise to the swim school. Huia and Jenny’s years of coaching/teaching experience has allowed them to develop a unique swimming programme, which has led to many of their participants competing not only at national level, but at international level also. “Our motto is ‘puawai’, which is ‘realising potential’. We believe everyone has potential and it’s up to us to help them realise it. It may be in swimming, or it may just be developing their confidence, so our programmes are tailored to each individual,” Jenny says. The swim school officially began in April 2012, but their state of the art swimming pools at the Waitaha Aquatic Centre opened in July 2013.

“There weren’t any pools on this side of the city, even prior to the earthquakes,” Jenny says, “and we saw the need for one.” The stainless steel pools were the first of their kind in New Zealand, imported from Indianapolis and assembled on site; the stainless steel is ideal for quake -prone Christchurch as it won’t crack under pressure. The filtration systems accompanying the pools are top of the line, and unique in New Zealand, ensuring water that is crystal clear with minimal chemicals – not so harsh on your skin. Canterbury Swim School was awarded a gold status from Swimming New Zealand which it has managed to maintain since opening. “Very few swim schools have been awarded that status,” Jenny says. “It’s based on a number of things; our programmes and the level of our tutors, the facility, the management plans and our involvement within the community.” Canterbury Swim School covers the full range of swimming abilities from babies through to adults. Jenny says it’s never too late to dive in and their adult swimming lessons are becoming increasingly popular.

Making car buying a breeze What an amazing selection of late model Japanesemanufactured vehicles there are on display at Wheeler Motor Company. Mazdas, Toyotas, Nissans, Hondas and Mitsubishis, small hatches, sedans and wagons are all gleaming from their professional grooming and just waiting for new owners to take them home and to enjoy many kilometres of motoring in the future. Wheeler Motor Company has been matching people with cars since 1938. It’s a familyowned business now in its third generation with dealer principal Nick Wheeler. Nick specialises in hand-picking, on his many trips to Japan, the cars that grace the dealership and the reputation the company has developed over the years is because of the top quality of the vehicles it offers for sale. They pride themselves on picking the stock right and pricing it right, and currently have some 300 cars in stock.

“Customers truly appreciate the knowledgeable relaxed attention they receive from us. There’s no pressure to buy; we don’t take ourselves too seriously and that has resulted in many repeat customers.”

This way a customer can compare and evaluate a vehicle thoroughly before any decision to buy is made.

Property & Construction | Hillview Construction

Recognition for Hillview’s excellence Hillview Construction Limited entered this year’s New Zealand House of the Year for the first time just to showcase some of their fantastic work. They were pleasantly surprised. The building company took away a gold and two silver awards, and the Canterbury Local Category Winner award. Hillview’s director Shaun Campbell says the awards show how the building company is not only as good as other companies, but is actually building architectural homes to a higher standard. “We work to a very high standard. The award reflects the skills of our team, and all the subcontractors we use, who also deserve this recognition.” The Canterbury Local Category Award, Gold Award, and Gold Reserve Award went to a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home in the heart of Christchurch. The modern and manageable 192sqm living space forms one half of a well-designed, twounit dwelling development. It features cladding of plaster panel, which is fresh and light, beneath pitched, heritage tray roofing. Red aluminium composite panels provide a nice surprise, outlining the alfresco entertaining area with a burst of brightness. This area provides a lovely spot to unwind at the end of the day or to gather with friends. Stepping through the glass sliders leads to the open-plan living area. A spacious, contemporary kitchen comprises sleek and streamlined serving. Ideal for family life or busy professionals, it features an island bench with breakfast bar, plus room for a more formal dining setting. Up a glazed floating staircase are the modern, comfortable bedrooms, with an ensuite off the

master bedroom. A chic, natural palette ties the whole package together. Hillview won a Silver Award in the new home $550,000 to $700,000 category with a sixunit development in St Albans. Described as 'tall, dark and handsome', this home’s rich combination of materials lends the exterior an appealing grounded feel. Rusticate cedar weatherboard meets with light façade panels above the garage. At certain points monopitch roofing flows over the edge in a waterfall effect, morphing into cladding. Its vertical lines are a pleasant juxtaposition with the horizontal cedar. The unique, modern feel carries inside each dwelling. With three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a multi-purpose living space, glazed sliders pull back to well-planned, private alfresco living. Inside features a combination of hard and soft flooring, ample storage and a central island in the kitchen. A sliding window enhances connection with the outdoors. An internal open-tread staircase with glass balustrades features in five of these homes, elegantly linking the levels. A Silver Award was awarded to Hillview in the Builder’s Own Home category for a fourbedroom, two-bathroom family home. This ultra-modern home brings together a combination of contemporary claddings to create striking street appeal. Plaster panel, cedar and stone have the two storeys covered, framing masses of glass. Set high above the city, the home is designed for great sea views all day, with views of the city lights at night providing a backdrop to the elegant entertaining in the open plan area in the evenings. An expansive stairwell leads to a mezzanine floor overlooking the dining area. The feeling of open space is incredible under the soaring double-height ceiling. Large decks, a generous patio and an outdoor fire provides perfect entertaining areas. A double-sided gas fire and central underfloor heating warm the expansive 319sqm interior.

Designer lighting is a bright touch both inside and outside this stunning executive home, which is sophisticated yet relaxed. Shaun says the award wining homes are typical of Hillview Construction’s high standard of workmanship and attention to detail, a high level which they are proud to bring to every project they undertake. Great things take time The saying ‘good things take time’ is a particularly apt summation when applied to the evolution of Misco Joinery located at 62 William Street in Kaiapoi. In fact, the more suitable quote would be ‘great things take time’ when describing the phenomenal achievements of this highlyrespected specialist in the design and manufacture of kitchens, laundries, wardrobes and study areas throughout Christchurch, North and South Canterbury, and the West Coast. Unprecedented curveballs - namely the market downturn catalysed by the global financial crisis and the Canterbury earthquake sequence - did their best to put a spanner in the works of the business’ progress, but the talented team’s persistence ultimately prevailed and its 12-years-in-the-making project is finally having its moment, and it’s a monumental one. A 3,500 square metre area is the manifestation of the hard-work and expertise the business is renowned and respected for across New Zealand. Director Michael Chernishoff reveals that, “There was extensive time involved with putting the architectural plans together, securing the engineer’s approval for the foundations and the permit from the Council.

Property & Construction | Misco Joinery “It gives us the ability to manufacture big national projects from Christchurch and then we fly our own staff members to install the projects, so we can maintain our high standards and oversee the entire process.” - Michael Chernishoff

“From there, it took us 18 months to clear the land and start digging for the foundations. “We opted for a foundation made up of six individual squares of concrete. Each one moves independently in the event of an earthquake before they come back together. There were 98 trucks of concrete used,” Resilient and innovative, just like the business itself, the foundations paved the way for a new era for the already success business.

“This is significant for us, as we have gone from working in buildings at the back of the family property where we had expanded as far as we could, to this site. “This development is so timely for us as it has enabled us to build kitchens for one of our biggest clients nationwide. “It gives us the ability to manufacture big national projects from Christchurch and then we fly our own staff members to install the projects, so we can maintain our high standards and oversee the entire process.” A seamless example of vertical integration at its best, Misco Joinery designs, manufactures and installs all of its work. “We have continued to tweak our systems so that things can work more efficiently and have employed an engineer to assist with the running of he machines.” An asset to its industry and also the rapidly growing commercial scene in North Canterbury, the business’ exciting milestone was recently acknowledged and celebrated with a visit from Prime Minister Bill English, who personally spent time with each member of staff. “We felt very honoured to have the Prime Minister visit us; we were the only North Canterbury business he visited and we appreciated him taking the time to look at

what we have achieved and to hear about our future.” With 25 years’ experience, this family firm offers on-site kitchen designers who can work with clients to make their dream kitchen a reality. The team can create kitchens for new builds and renovate, redesign and rebuild existing kitchens.

From contemporary to classic, the outcome is never governed by budget – only by the imagination – with Misco Joinery able to create a design that suits individual budgets. CT Misco Joinery 62 William Street Kaiapoi (03) 383 4384 www.misco.co.nz

Property & Construction | Underground Brown

Trenchless technology - no dig, no mess, no problem Underground Brown is an innovative South Island company which delivers a range of trenchless services to a diverse client base, primarily in the Canterbury region, and elsewhere l when required. The demand for these services has steadily increased over the last 25 years. The company was founded 25 years ago by Tony and Vicky Brown, after Tony had gained experience with early trenchless technology in underground utility installation techniques during his career with the NZPO and Telecom. The company was the first to complete a directional drilling job in the South Island and things just took off after that. Given that directional drilling, globally, is a relative infant at around 30 odd years old, Underground Brown (UGB) has seen, tried, tested, used and trialed all the various new and different variations of both drilling machinery, hardware and location systems available over the years. The company now employs around 100 people with very little turnover of staff as it is relentless in keeping up with technology so the crews are using the best available on the market at all times, along with training to match. UGB is possibly the largest directional drilling resource in the South Island with 14 operational drilling rigs.

No job is too big or to small; UGB can put an irrigation pipe under your path at home, or undertake large infrastructure installations such as a rising sewer main in Riccarton, where the installation of the five-meter deep pipe has just been successfully completed on time and with no problems. The pipe was installed over 1,500 meters of 450mm diameter pipe in lengths up to 180 meters at a time. This contract required the purchase of a new drill to meet the high specification of the installation. To date UGB has not engaged too heavily in the post-earthquake rebuild, but as contractors from other parts of the country return home with the end of SCIRT, the company has been called on to join some infrastructure repair and replacement work. After 25 years, the company has many strong contacts and relationships in the industry, and recently signed a contract with City Care New Zealand Ltd, to provide trenchless services throughout the whole of the country, in conjunction with five other companies, to assist in servicing their many water maintenance contracts nation-wide.

Property & Construction | Underground Brown As well as directional drilling, the company’s services include: Thrust boring - generally used for single duct installations under roadways in undrillable (stony) ground. Pipe ramming – where a ramming tool is attached to the rear of a steel pipe to drive the pipe into the ground with repeated blows (used for larger pipe installs in gravel or stony ground). Hydro excavation – the company has five hydro excavation units, used for bulk cartage of fluid down to pot holing for existing services. Ground penetrating radar - uses a high frequency technique to produce images from the subsurface. Butt welding and electro fusion – equipment used to join pipes together. Open trenching. Small excavation jobs.

Underground Brown has been one of the few companies that has managed to survive the rigors of installing ultra-fast broadband ducting throughout Christchurch, and has been involved in this since day one of the project, on November 1, 2011. “A lot of people in other companies found the UFB environment was very difficult to make the numbers work, but we have survived through being innovative and we are looking forward to seeing the project through to completion some time next year,” Tony Brown says. The company primarily uses Veneer drilling gear, supplied by AB Equipment, a New Zealand-wide company and a choice made because of their attention to detail and customer focused service. Property & Construction | Peddle Thorp

Success by design Not dissimilar to the architectural design of a building, developing a successful business requires some non-negotiable essentials - a strategic vision, creativity and innovation. Not to mention, considerable expertise. It is these virtues, among many others, that have positioned Peddle Thorp as one of the leading architectural practices in the country. Led by three directors and six associate directors, the practice’s potential is realised time and time again in the delivery of impressive commissions. Operating with integrity and a down-to-earth, honest and practical approach in mind, the multi-faceted team is able to take complex ideas and distill them, creating visual expressions of these ideas that are accessible, engaging and inspiring. From its strong suite of architectural services through to interior design and offering expert advice and resolution services, Peddle Thorp is active in the civic, commercial, health, hospitality and residential fields. On local soil, Peddle Thorp’s achievements speak for themselves - from the widely celebrated ANZ Centre, to the recently secured contract to design and deliver the highly anticipated Ballantynes development. The Ballantynes development off Lichfield Street, encompassing retail, offices and car parking spread over five floors, will further strengthen Peddle Thorp’s imprint on the city rebuild, adding to the retail experience of the city’s centre and retail precinct.

After enjoying nationwide success, the catalyst for Peddle Thorp’s establishment in the Christchurch market in early 2014 was The Triangle Centre. Leading Sydney architects Esquisse Design Studio provided the concept for the new building with Peddle Thorp developing and delivering the final design.

and covers 1,700 square meters of ground floor retail and hospitality, with three office levels above, bringing a significant working population to the site and its surrounds. Bounded by Colombo, Cashel and High Streets, it sits opposite the new Hereford Street carpark, also designed and delivered by Peddle Thorp.

The development has compellingly honoured the pedestrian and retail vision for the area

The building’s striking façade defines the upper levels of the development while the Cashel and Colombo Street corner features a simple ‘light box’, all set above highly transparent retail shop fronts. An important investment in the city’s infrastructure, emblematic of the dawn of a new era for Christchurch city, associate director Marcus Hogan says of the firm’s involvement in such high-calibre projects, “We are a company that can play to many strengths as we have an experienced base of specialised staff underpinning a foundation in the design of diverse building typologies and award-winning work”. The diversity of the business’ skillset by no means fragments its identity; rather it places it in a rather unique position where it can rise magnificently to many different design challenges.

Peddle Thorp, in conjunction with Brewer Davidson Architects, has recently delivered four primary schools in North Canterbury as part of the wider $1.1 billion Rebuilding Christchurch’s Schools project. “We also have a contract with Housing New Zealand which reflects the fact we are able to take on many different projects varying in size, value and complexity. 56 | October 2017    www.canterburytoday.co.nz

“Our model is very sound - our strengths very much lie in our technical process - from documentation to delivery. “In the past, a number of our projects have been designed by strategic partners and delivered by us, but our emphasis moving forward is design, and continuing to deliver exceptional architecture and consultancy services.” An award-winning firm, Peddle Thorp has earned a number of accolades in some of the country’s most revered design awards. At the 2017 Auckland Architecture Awards, the practice received a Heritage Award for the Australis Nathan Buildings in Britomart, a building with a sgrafitto (scratched or etched) exterior, now home to Tiffany & Co., as well as securing an Interior Architecture Award for its very own studio in the nearby Northern Steamship Building. Property & Construction | M O Brown Builders

Building award winning homes M O Brown Builders is a Christchurch company with a reputation for winning awards and keeping their clients happy. After 30 years, the company has built up a stellar reputation, and won many House of the Year awards. While much of its work comes from referrals, new clients and projects are always welcomed. “Most of our business is due to past client referral, word of mouth, and recognition in the marketplace, which is the best form of advertising any company could ask for,” says owner Mike Brown. “Proven success in the Master Builders House of the Year Awards is indicative of the level of workmanship that can be expected.” In 2004, as a first time entrant in the Master Builders House of the Year competition, M O Brown Builders won a gold award as well as becoming the overall category winner, proceeding to the National Awards held in Auckland. Since then the company has gone from strength to strength and has won several successive awards. “Whether it’s a large, architecturally designed home, or a smaller, ‘low-end’ budget build, our main focus is to provide a quality built product and to keep the clients happy,” he says. “We pride ourselves on excellent workmanship and attention to detail.” The company has a very diverse workload, which includes new builds to suit all budgets, alterations and renovations, throughout Christchurch and the surrounding regions. “We build many new homes, not just mid to high-end, but we also take on the smaller jobs

– new builds at the lower end. We also build multi-units, plus we do alterations and extensions.” M O Builders takes care of the entire project – from start to finish – with great care taken at the beginning of a project to ensure there are no hidden extras for the client. “We get the pricing right at the very start. Then the client knows what to expect, and if they want to make any savings, we can work with them.”

“Mike and his team did a great job on our complicated hill build. We were very happy with the result and have paid him the highest compliment we can – by engaging his services again. This time to restore and convert a 130-year old homestead into a vibrant café/bar.” – Chris for White House Black, 265 Halswell Road

The company project manages everything, including hiring subcontractors, and is also open to working with a client’s preferred supplier. “For example, sometimes people have their own subtrade they wish to use, and we are happy with that.” In the mid to high-end market, the company will often work closely with architectural firms. “Often clients will come in with their own architectural plans, but if they don’t, we have a range of architects to work with, depending on the design and budget.

- This Albert Terrace house with a timber kitchen, dark timber cladding and red roof won a gold award in the $450,000-$550,000 category of the Master Builders House of the Year awards

“If they want to build a traditional villa we can recommend an architect who specialises in that style, or if they want something modern or more complicated, there are architects who do that too.” As to the many awards, Mike believes it reflects the company’s efforts to always provide a good honest job with attention to detail and excellent communication. “We always aim to provide the best final product for our clients.” It takes a long time to build up the sort of reputation M O Builders enjoys. Mike’s father started the company in 1974 as O.R.Brown Builders, offering building labour only, with Mike then as a 16 year-old apprentice and one other, and Mike has defined it and expanded it over the last 30 years. The growth has occurred naturally as the company took on larger scale projects, and

Mike now employs a staff of 12, while his wife, Lisa, helps out in the office. Communication is always important with any building project, and the company is careful to employ top-quality staff who will fit in with the team and get on well with clients. Staff turnover is low, with one employee having been employed with the company for over 17 years, and another two for over 10 years. “Our staff all know each other well, and all get on well and know what’s expected. They are all good at communicating with clients.” The company always enjoys a challenge and recently completed a complicated build in Westmorland, of a house built on four levels. Constructed of Hardie’s Stria weatherboard and vertical cedar. The house was built for an interior designer, who Mike says has done a superb job with the overall design.

Property & Construction | Fleetwood Construction

Building beautiful award-winning homes You know the old adage of ‘your home is your castle’, well you want a builder who will treat your home that way – someone you can trust. But trust isn’t found via Facebook reviews. Trust in a builder comes from proven workmanship and consistency. The team at Fleetwood Construction have proven themselves adept time and again of building nothing less than their client’s image of a castle. In 2015 they put one of their builds to the ultimate test at the prestigious Master Builders House of the Year Awards and came out with a gold award - and they have not let their standards drop since.

for his attention to detail in upmarket new homes and alterations. He has since taken on more architectural builds and his reputation continues to excel. “We love the challenges and the attention to detail that these homes have to offer,” he says. If one was to question their capabilities, their gold-award winning home in Cass Bay speaks for itself.

It’s now 2017 and they’ve done it again, adding another gold and another silver to their ever-expanding trophy wall.

Utilising the landscape, the home completely opens itself up to the beautiful scenes that surround it. It is warm and inviting, complimented with modern, polished concrete floors and encased with the bold contrast of black corrugated iron and natural cedar.

Fleetwood Construction’s director, Sam Fleetwood, would be best described as a perfectionist when it comes to his work.

The emphasis placed on clear communication meant the client’s needs and style were not only met – they were exceeded.

Since establishing Fleetwood Construction in 2003 he quickly became recognised

The vision of this home was clear, and with that vision in mind, Fleetwood Construction’s

high quality workmanship executed the build to a gold-winning standard. Sam established his own business because he wanted to experience the build alongside his clients, right through from planning to the celebratory glass of wine when handing over the keys. When he is asked to describe Fleetwood’s work, the word ‘pride’ resonates. This pride comes through working closely with architects, designers and clients alike, building relationships likened to that of a close a friend and delivering to a standard with close friendships in mind.

Property & Construction | CB Civil and Drainage

Delivering ‘in the trench’ experience The team at CB Civil and Drainage boasts more than 25 years of experience in the civil contracting industry, including all aspects of drainage, sheet piling, well-point dewatering, site works and minor civil structures. CB Civil is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing contractors, and employs more than 50 permanent staff with branches in Auckland, Christchurch and more recently Kaikoura. They are members of Civil Contractors NZ, and believe that collaboration between contractor and stakeholder(s) is the key to the successful delivery of contracts. CB Civil and Drainage has been working hard assisting in Kaikoura to clear slips, re-align railways, build retaining walls and new road corridors to get the state highway open. Back in 2014/15, CB Civil and Drainage completed an award winning renewal of the Sumner Scarborough stormwater and wastewater networks. The scope of work included the renewal of more than three kilometres of stormwater and wastewater infrastructure from 100mm to 375mm using PVC, PE, concrete pipes, and manhole/sump structures to 3m deep, including well-point de-watering and sheet piling.

“This project presented several challenges such as deep excavations up to five metres, wellpoint dewatering, severely damaged existing infrastructure, and extremely difficult site access whilst maintaining access for residents,” says CB Civil and Drainage managing director, Jamie Campbell. “Our team also had to deal with unforeseen asbestos pipe removal. While the removal was subcontracted out, our team did an excellent job of identifying the risks and keeping the main contractor informed.” He says overall good communication and forward planning were all essential elements in mitigating the risks involved in this project. “Our team’s collaborative approach and technical ability ensured that, despite these challenges, we were able to deliver this project safely, on time, to specification, and within budget. We also won the Fulton Hogan Environmental Award for this project.”

A project recently completed in Bishopdale provided many challenges for CB Civil and Drainage, such as poor ground conditions, strong existing flows, concrete encased existing services, and a tight timeframe for project completion.

“The site was narrow, and managing this required detailed programming and planning. In order to meet the tight timeframe, we utilised two crews.” CB Civil and Drainage’s ‘in the trench experience’, problem solving skills, and collaborative approach ensures the success of all undertaken projects. CT

“The soil is a soft wet peat which means we have to deal with difficult ground conditions,” says Jamie.

“We had to open 20m to 30m of trench at a time to install the piles. Our methodology created by our site team included digging, shoring, and placing a drainage layer and concrete blinding which enabled us to manage the risk.

To reduce possible delays, be sure to discuss these changes with the inspector as early in the process as possible. Something you may find minor, like changing the size of a window, may end up affecting wall bracing, lintel sizes, ventilation or light requirements, and the like.

While the inspectors are always willing to help wherever they can, they must remain impartial and independent, so don’t go asking them for their preferred product or builders.

1. Make sure you are ready for the building inspection A lot of contractors are so busy they find it easier to use an inspector to compile a snag list of issues to address. Approximately 80 percent of all inspection fails can be avoided by having a quality system in place. This doesn’t have to be a complex process, even a quick “once over” to ensure its complete would help save between 15,000 and 20,000 re-inspections. That equates to about $2.5m in fees and 18,000 hours saved.

In saying that though, in the building game, a little knowledge can save a lot of money, so make use of inspectors and don’t be afraid to ask.

Nearly all CCC requests result in a request for further information which “stops the clock” and delays its issue. Having these documents prepared and available at the final inspection would help the process run much more efficiently. To help you identify what paperwork will be required, inspectors will list these, as they are required on their inspection checklists. Another source of these is the Advice notes listed in the Building Consent documentation issued with the plans. CT

Innovation in Canterbury’s utility services sector drives employment The shape of Canterbury’s utility services sector has changed significantly over the past 12 months, as strong domestic performance and new employment opportunities lure talented professionals to key leadership roles, says Decipher Group director Sarcha Every. In its annual year-end business review, Christchurch-based human resource and recruitment firm Decipher Group revealed that more than 37 percent of all senior management and executive level placements were for positions within the utility services sector. Utility services refer to organisations that provide services consumed by the public, including electricity, natural gas, water and sewage. Broadband internet service providers are also included in the definition. Decipher Group’s recruitment service is usually dominated by requirements from Canterbury’s strong manufacturing industry, but this year employment needs in utility services topped manufacturing’s senior staffing demand by 19 percent. Executive positions in agribusiness and technology also

grew within New Zealand’s wider employment market. “Companies operating in the utility services sector are challenging the status quo by offering more innovative leadership roles in order to make their business models more sustainable,” Every says. “In the past, high-calibre candidates would often regard the utility services sector as not being dynamic or lacking innovation and excitement, but when you start peeling off the - Enable’s Greg Rossiter with Decipher Group director Sarcha Every layers, you can actually see how advanced and forward-thinking many of these organisations if they’re working in finance, marketing, facing businesses in New Zealand are have become.” technology or customer services.” increased customer demands, improving the According to Every, many companies in the digital customer experience, compliance and Local fibre broadband provider Enable owns utility services sector are undergoing a major regulation, increasing speed to market of new and operates an extensive network across workplace transformation, which has resulted products and services, and collecting and greater Christchurch that will deliver fibre in the creation of new, highly desirable roles broadband services to up to 180,000 homes, analysing data. that never existed in the past. businesses and schools once fully built. “As many organisations grapple with the “Organisations are responding to the changing Within the past nine months, Enable created pressures of managing new technology and business environment by restructuring their new senior management positions, including innovation, human resourcing and recruitment teams and transforming cultures to be more general manager of business improvement is an opportunity to bring in people who have responsive and customer centric,” she says. and systems, and learning and development that x-factor,” Every says. manager, to help reach its strategic, “Leaders are reducing inefficiencies by “Christchurch’s population has hit precommercial and community connectivity investing in new technology and digital earthquake levels, but we are still finding objectives. platforms to link all areas of a business, there is a real shortage of quality candidates and they’re creating new roles to fill the void Top five challenges facing business applying for specialist senior management between strategy and successful business According to the Hudson New Zealand’s latest and technical roles in Canterbury, so we have execution. Property & Construction | Urban design

What drives urban design? AI, collaborative consumption and climate change Artifical intelligence, driverless cars, the shared economy and climate change are disrupting the future of New Zealand cities, according to internationally renowned planning experts. The challenge for local authorities and citizens is adapting to these advancements, claim urban futurist and former Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Stephen Yarwood, and highly respected landscape architect Professor Elizabeth Mossop. The pair both spoke at the New Zealand Planning Institute’s (NZPI) annual conference titled Changing Places last April. Mossop’s presentation focused on ‘Landscapes of Urban Resilience’, while Yarwood talked about ‘Urban Disruption and Contemporary Change – how the hell do you plan for the unknown?’.

Smartphone data drives city planning Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies have the ability to result in a “tsunami of change” Yarwood says, who consults internationally on urban futures and innovation. “For example, information obtained from citizens'; smartphones and networked digital devices can be analysed by artificial intelligence software to calculate population growth, street usage and land development,” he says. “Ultimately, this leads to the creation of a utopian future upon which urban plans are drafted. Technology companies are playing a leading role in the development of infrastructure, and data is being used to create urban patterns and systems rather than predict and manage them.” Technology advancements in the way of driverless cars have the ability to change spatial patterns and city cores, claims Yarwood. “As parking becomes less of a demand there will be a lot of reclaimed space. Sprawling bitumen carparks could be replaced with high-value residential developments or public spaces.”

Urban heat poses greatest health threat Climate change and the resilience of cities is another key planning challenge that is confronting cities, claims Mossop, Dean of Design Architecture and Building at Sydney’s University of Technology.

Property & Construction | Strategic Homes Group

Treating your home like it was their own A local company guiding homeowners towards maximised gains on their property investment, Strategic Homes Group is proud of its 18year history providing solutions and guidance in property investment – whether for a first home, dream home or investment home.

Mossop has also been involved in the posthurricane reconstruction of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, and the ongoing revitalisation of Detroit in the United States. “Mitigating the effects of urban heat islands through increased tree canopy and vegetation, for example, is necessary to avoid heat-related public health issues and the economic implications of increased energy use,” she says. Urban heat islands are built-up areas that are significantly warmer than their rural surroundings due to human activities, and often experience increased temperature differences of up to 3.7 degrees celsius. “Contrary to popular belief our greatest public health threat is heat,” says Mossop. “As things heat up more and more, the issues become increasingly acute and that is what we, as planners, are faced with at the moment.” In New Zealand, the regions in which people are most likely to be affected by climate change are Northland, the east coast of the North Island and parts of Bay of Plenty, according to Environmental Heath Indicators New Zealand.

Agri-tourism to benefit from Uber-esque collaborative consumption With the rise of Airbnb, Uber and other peer-to-peer services, people are exploring unfamiliar areas of their cities and interacting with people and places in ways “that just years ago were unimaginable,” adds Yarwood. This has contributed to the rise of the shared economy, which Pricewaterhouse Coopers predicts will be worth $335 billion by 2025. Defined as collaborative consumption, it involves people renting out things they are not using such as a car or house. “People are creating a new sense of space, which is changing infrastructure and spending patterns,” says Yarwood. “In New Zealand I see the shared economy as playing a big role in driving agritourism, with planning changes allowing farmers to promote accommodation for added development.”

Director Andrew O’Donoghue says the Group a different lifestyle and expects their wants and is ideal for people looking to create wealth needs to seam around this. through property investment, predominantly for Strategic Homes’ designs allow for variety their retirement earnings. in both form and function; everything from “The first goal is to help clients earn enough materials and aesthetics to whether or not equity from their investments to pay off their you want open-plan or separate living and own personal mortgages first and then build a automated or manual systems. But more than each house itself, the dwelling in its overall context is also carefully considered. Just as the name suggests, Andrew says the company is very conscious of where urban development is heading and cogitates this – including regional transport and infrastructure plans, as well as land/soil types – when acquiring locations for clients.

“We [Strategic Homes] don’t build homes on the basis that they’re rentals… we’ve always built homes on the basis that we’d be happy to live in those homes ourselves.” The New York Times has hailed 2017 as ‘the year of the renter’. In NZ it’s no different. Paired with the right rental property this demand can be transformed into a mutually beneficial agreement that provides nonhomeowners with respectable rental options, and homeowners with respectable tenants that bring to fruition their profitable investment. As well as its design and build service, Strategic Homes offers a range of design plans for two- to five-bedroom homes and house and land packages. Property & Construction | Aorangi Homes

A half century building South Canterbury Aorangi Homes has been an integral part of the Timaru community for more than 50 years. A family firm presently headed by Jeff Wright, his son Javas Wright will be taking over the business early next year. Javas did his apprenticeship under his father, has worked for the company since 2001, and has been co-director for the last four years. He says he’s proud to be able to carry on the family tradition and to continue to be part of the Timaru and South Canterbury community. “We’re passionate about the South Canterbury region. It’s going ahead in leaps and bounds, particularly with the growth in the dairy industry. It’s a great place to raise a family and we’re proud of all the homes we have built and renovated in the area.”

“We’ve always taken pride in everything we do. We pay attention to detail and work in closely with the client to achieve a finish that stands out from the rest.” - Javas Wright

The father of three primary school children, two girls and a boy, he not only heads an important local business, but the family is involved in the wider community.

Many of the architecturally-designed homes built by Aorangi Homes have been undertaken in conjunction with leading architects in the area, including Pat Coll from Draftline, and NB Architects.

The building company undertakes a full range of projects, from architecturally designed homes through to more modest dwellings.

The company also has the contract for maintenance for Health South Canterbury and light commercial work is an increasing part of the work undertaken by the team.

They also specialise in renovations and alterations. Javas says although the team undertake substantial renovations, such as the $500,000 alteration they’re presently working on, they are still happy to complete the smaller jobs.

Over the years Aorangi Homes has won numerous awards, including three golds in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards.

“We’ve got two apprentices on the team at the moment, and they get the opportunity to work on a broad range of projects, not just building new houses. This means they acquire a much wider skill base.” The apprentices, and the rest of the team, also get the opportunity to work on diverse styles of homes, from architecturally-designed houses through to older-style character homes, and everything in between.

Aorangi Homes has built countless homes over the many years it has been in business, and Javas says they now often find they are renovating or altering homes that the company originally built in the 70s and 80s. Many of the clients they have worked with have since becomes friends.

Manufacturers of frames and trusses for both commercial and residential needs.

He says taking this broad-based approach not only means they are serving all sectors of the Timaru community, but also means the team acquire a wide variety of skills.

Property & Construction | RJ Mac Contracting

Excavation and base preparation specialists In 2014 experienced contractors Ryan and Justin Macdonald established RJ Mac Contracting to deliver exceptional foundations, driveways, demolition, soil supply and excavations to people throughout the regions of Marlborough and Canterbury. Three years later and their dedication to drawing on years of expertiseto deliver jobs efficiently and on time is more present than ever, and has seen business thrive.

“Aorangi Homes has always had a dedicated director who is passionate about what we do. That was the case with the founders, it was a philosophy carried on by my father, and one I am passionate about continuing.” CT Aorangi Homes 201 Le Cren St Seaview Timaru (03) 688 4749 info@aorangihomes.co.nz www.aorangihomes.co.nz — Advertising Feature

Soil supply

House foundations

RJ Mac has invested in a custom soil screener to complement its excavation business. The machine is in full production in its Halswell Junction Road yard.

“Foundations form the crucial backbone for the house building process. We ensure we have the right people operating our machinery to get the perfect levels to your foundation requirements,” they say.

The soil is available for purchase from the heart of Halswell, within handy reach of a number of subdivisions. Soil can either be purchased from RJ Mac’s yard or delivery can be arranged. CT

The basic foundation to a home needs to be level and to the right specifications of the house plans.

Driveways The same principle applies under your concrete driveways. If you don’t get it right, long term you will experience cracking in your driveway as a direct result of ground movement. “No matter what condition your driveway might be in, be it a new house build or an old pot-holed muddy area, with our specialised equipment and knowledge we will ensure your foundations are solid.” This process includes excavation and base metal compaction of your driveway area into a solid foundation so as to pour your new concrete onto.

Demolition - Javas Wright

Javas says while the team are very proud of these awards, they’re proud of every house they’ve built and renovated, and bring the same high level of craftsmanship to every project. When is father retires next year and Javas assumes full directorship, he expects little to change in the company. It will continue to provide the same high level of service that has seen if survive and prosper for more than 50 years, and to weather the cycles in the building industry. “We’ve always taken pride in everything we do. We pay attention to detail and work in closely with the client to achieve a finish that stands out from the rest.

PROVIDING LEGAL ADVICE ON:

Having extensive experience in the safe and efficient demolition of single and multistoried buildings in Christchurch, RJ Mac can safely demolish both commercial and domestic structures. “We will cover all traffic management, service location and disconnection, consent applications with all local authorities and the safe removal and recycling of demolition debris.

Hospitality | The Good Home

A place to make yourself at home Wigram is a new, fast-growing and exciting part of Christchurch. Echoing this excitement is a new restaurant in The Landing precinct – a restaurant with a concept seen nowhere else in the city. The Good Home is a gastro-pub. That’s not unusual you might think, but the fit-out most certainly is with its walls lined with bookshelves, its quirky objets d’art and hanging plants that would grace any home, and its separate room spaces to relax or dine in. This is a family-friendly restaurant and bar that feels just like home. It’s a home away from home where you can come on in, put your feet up, unwind, be at ease and stay awhile. That’s what being “at home” is all about. So “welcome home”. At The Good Home, as you might expect, there is delicious, reasonably priced food – everything from juicy steaks to healthy salads, from grazing platters to burgers.

A feature of the restaurant is the way it has incorporated aspects of its aviation location and past into the menu. The Fred Ladd lamb shanks are served with creamy mashed potato; the Henry Wigram chicken breast is prosciutto-wrapped and comes with herb crushed potatoes and creamy leek sauce, while the Kitty Hawk Asian salad has a wonderful mix of leaves, pea shoots, cherry tomatoes and toasted peanuts. The pizzas too conjure up echoes of young men in historic flying machines – the Harvard, the de Havilland, the Orion, the Mustang, the Corsair and the Hawker. The chefs in The Good Home’s kitchen are kept busy with lunch and dinner patrons as the restaurant opens at 11.00am each day. They are in the process of devising a new summer menu from fresh seasonal produce which will be perfect for alfresco dining in the large northfacing courtyard that is well protected from Christchurch’s pesky winds. A home though is more than food alone. It is a place to socialise, to be with friends and to enjoy watching sport. All of these activities are catered for at The Good Home in the individual spaces within the venue as a whole. They are spaces for you to feel at ease in and to call your own. There’s outdoor seating off both the ground and mezzanine levels; there are two bars offering an enticing cocktail list and the increasingly popular craft beers, and there’s sport on the various big screens. Everything you would want from your home and it’s right on your doorstep and so convenient for the residents of Wigram Skies.

It is little wonder then that since The Good Home opened its doors only a few months ago, the reaction to its design and concept has been phenomenal.

LET’S MAKE IT.

“People are simply wowed by the place,” says manager Andy. “They say it really does feel homely and friendly and like being invited into someone’s home. “The design team from Burning Red Interior Design Studio in Auckland have created a unique environment. There are all sorts of special embellishments – the keyboard of a piano has been lifted out and the space used to store cutlery. “The entrance to the toilets is through the red door of a phone booth. Everything is fun and

very colourful and certainly provides lots of taking points.” Check out this delightful new restaurant for yourself. There is so much to look at and admire. CT The Good Home 100 The Runway Wigram Skies (03) 341 7227 andy@tghwigram.co.nz www.thegoodhomewigram.co.nz — Advertising Feature
