Get back to nature indoors. Greenwalls applied to internal walls, particularly in living spaces, offer a surprisingly high level of insulation. In winter they keep the warm air in and in summer they keep the hot air out.
Indoors or out, a greenwall, or living wall, not only beautifies the space, it also improves the air quality and can improve the mood of anyone in the vacinity.

The important thing about plant selection when it comes to kitchens is to opt for plants which are aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
There are a few things you need to take into consideration prior to installing a greenwall in your home, whether it’s indoors or outdoors.
The first is, do you currently have access to water, light and airflow? If not, is it going to be an extra cost to install plumbing, lighting or fans? Secondly, will the plants you like thrive in the space that you’ve chosen? Plant selection is key, and every space will require a different pallet design. Mark Paul, founder of The Greenwall Company, shares his tips for each room he’s installed greenwalls and greenroofs:

The home, Casa Moderno, was designed by Sheppard & Rout Architects and meticulously constructed by Gregg Builders. The centrepiece is the doubleheight entranceway, crowned by a dramatic Arabescato marble spiral staircase, with stunning artwork displayed in the mezzanine gallery above. Expansive open-plan living areas unfold across the breadth of this spacious home, arranged in zones to cater for family living and entertaining, while the interior is designed to flows seamlessly to the landscaped grounds and exterior living spaces. The state-of-the-art kitchen is designed around a monumental cantilevered island, also of Arabescato marble. In terms of scale, Casa Moderno has plenty to boast about, including an indoor swimming pool, seven bathrooms, four ensuite bedrooms, a six car
garage and several rooms, which can be configured to accommodate guests. The scope of the property is something to behold in itself, with the home exceeding 900sqm, sitting on a 3,000sqm site. Our keen appetite for renovating New Zealand is a nation of home improvers, with nearly half of renovators saying it’s important to do up their home to increase its value and sell.
An online survey of more than 800 homeowners found that 37 percent of property owners have undertaken renovations in the past two years, 20 percent are currently renovating, and 28 percent are considering renovating in the next 12 months.
“Kiwis have always loved a renovation job, but what we could be seeing right now is more people taking advantage of low interest rates to fund home improvement rather than selling and entering a challenging housing market,” he says. “A range of funding options may be available for renovators, including topping up their existing mortgage, or redrawing on a revolving home loan.”
When asked why they’re choosing to renovate rather than move house, 18 percent say it’s impractical or too much effort to move, 17 percent say they can’t afford to move, and 17 percent say there are too few homes on the market they’d want to buy.
When asked why it’s important to renovate their home, 74 percent of current or future renovators say they want to improve their home, 47 percent say they want to raise its value and sell, and 37 percent say they want to change its aesthetics.
Westpac NZ chief experience officer, Shane Howell says with the right advice, improvements can be a great way to enhance a home’s characteristics and add value.
Shane’s advice to homeowners looking to renovate is to have a clear goal around what they are trying to achieve, set a plan and then stick to it.

“If the aim is to increase comfort, energy efficiency, or make your home more liveable, make sure you can achieve this on your budget. If your aim is to increase value then it would probably be a good idea to seek advice from a valuer beforehand,” he says.
Twenty-seven percent of homeowners say they’ve purchased a property that needs work, while 24 percent profess to simply enjoying DIY. “We’re encouraged to see that 28 percent of renovators think it’s important to make their home more energy efficient. “We’re supporting the Government’s insulation and clean heating programme by waiving the establishment fee for any home loan top up or personal loan for insulation as part of the Energywise programme. “As well as reducing your environmental footprint, making your home energy efficient can raise its value and lead to long term cost savings.” Fewer than one in three homeowners (32 percent) say they haven’t renovated their home in the past two years and have no plans to do so.

The best new televisions also boast of lower power consumption, and stunning new pendant lights are low energy LEDs. Connected, yet off the grid The connected home can be disconnected too! Interest in solar is at an all-time high, whether it is to just heat your hot water cylinder when the sun shines, through to full home systems,
with electrical storage batteries and more. Consumers are showing their green side in their interest in gas for cooking or central heating, as well as passive high-rated insulation in walls, ceiling and floors, double glazing and more. Big or little While the floor space of a modern home continues to grow, with huge matching stoves, multi-headed showers, fixtures and furniture, the tiny house movement continues to kick on. It’s a case of go big or go (tiny) home, with many exhibitors showing their compact side next to their larger statement items. And does smaller mean lower quality? Not a chance, with some of the smallest solutions reflecting design brilliance and economy of scale.

Renovate and ask questions later The high cost of building means that consumers are emboldened to put more investment into renovation. And the show was
full of renovation options, from retrofit windows and double glazing, new roofing, cladding and insulation options through to replacement flooring, linings and waterproofing.
Colour is back It is often said that when the economy is tight, people seek out inspiration in other aspects of their life – so perhaps that’s why after several decades of Scandi and beige and white, the interior of a home is now bursting with living colour. From the walls and carpets to tiles and cushions, the trend towards ‘maximalism’ means you can splash out like never before.

Gable Silhouette This executive home, inspired by the work of Sir Miles Warren, won Greg Young of Young Architects a major award at the Canterbury/ Westland Regional ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards. The project called ‘Gable Silhouette’ won the Residential New Home over 300sqm Architectural Design Award, and also the Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award.
A simple family home in the suburb of Merivale, the design’s focus was on the enjoyment of living in it, rather than impressing the neighbours. It is a simple home, concentrating on the beauty of its symmetry, and the materials used in it. The internal spaces are designed to be warm and welcoming, focussing on their purpose and their surroundings. The aesthetic has been inspired by the early work of Sir Miles Warren and the architecture of Central Otago, for this reason a simple gable form was chosen for the home. Judges said that Greg had done an excellent job of successfully placing a large executive home, while maintaining a single gable, on a long narrow site. “The use of braces and straps on trusses introduces a strong graphic element and the roof line adds a shadowing element to the look and feel,” the judges said. Another project designed by Greg Young, of four apartments titled ‘Hereford Apartments’, received the Residential Multi-Unit Dwelling Architectural Design Award. Every year, the ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards celebrate innovative, sustainable and exceptionally designed projects from around New Zealand. New Zealand’s outstanding kitchens and bathrooms were celebrated at the 2019 NKBA Excellence in Design Awards.
This year, 19 beautiful kitchens and bathrooms created by 15 of the most talented designers in the country were recognised. The National Kitchen and Bathroom Association Excellence in Design Awards are a celebration of excellence, innovation, creativity, quality craftsmanship, and inspiring design in the sector.
Designs of desire
NKBA president Jared Dinneen says this year’s designs demonstrate the exciting role kitchens and bathrooms play in giving a home wow factor. “Excellent kitchen and bathroom design have to be a top priority for anyone looking at building new or renovating a home. “The incredible designs from the 2019 NKBA Excellence in Design Awards demonstrate just how important a quality, well planned and executed kitchen and bathroom is to the balance and the overall aesthetic of a home. “It is exciting to see NKBA designers creating kitchens where the client is passionate about great design, manufacturing, appliances and finishes,” Jared say
A Modern Touch of Retro
This mid-century retro-style kitchen has been designed for an architectural 1960s home. A black and timber colour palette achieves the desired aesthetic, while melamine and Formica Laminate finishes were selected for nostalgic and budget reasons. Black overlay pull handles help to reduce finger marking on the black melamine doors and deliver a clean look. A custom open shelving décor unit above the coffee nook packs a visual punch. Open shelving around the rangehood cabinet creates an interesting view through to the dining room. The design won the Wellington Chapter Kitchen Recognition Award.

Bowled Over The bathroom design has been grounded with the use of steel, which complements the vertical heated towel rails. The steel starts as a negative detail between the concrete benchtop and the cabinetry; it then flows downwards and floats under the cabinetry creating a space for towel storage. It cleverly angles to maximise detailing aesthetic and airing of towels. The rectangular basin makes a bold visual contrast against the black tiles, dark wallpaper and the concrete vanity top. This design won the Southern Chapter Bathroom Recognition Award.

Clean lines
This dramatic master ensuite sets the tone for the rest of the master suite, and from the minute you walk in, it delivers real wow factor with many memorable elements. Through dramatic lighting, the designer has created a space that highlights the tile texture in a sophisticated and outstanding way. The creative mirror detailing is stunning and just adds to this accomplished and truly unique bathroom design. The palette and material choices play a major role in the success of this space. The timber look tile provides plenty of rich tones and grain changes, which is replicated in the joinery throughout the suite. The pearl coloured tiles were used to complement the use of concrete and oxidized metals 18 | B&R
throughout the rest of the home, and also to provide a light, fresh backdrop for the timber and pops of blackened steel. The layout of the ensuite includes a spacious shower with twin rain heads, as well as a double vanity unit with two deep drawers. The clients wanted lighting that was both effective, but also fun and accentuated the drama and detail throughout the space. The timber feature tile is lit from wall to wall to highlight the tonal changes and texture, while the low-level lighting under the vanity is used to create soft, ambient light to move throughout the space at night. Designed by Michelle Quinn of Lume Design, the design called ‘Waimairi Beach House’ won the Supreme Bathroom Design award at the 2019 NKBA Excellence in Design Awards.

When most people think spa, they think of a large, lavish freestanding bathtub. However, if you’re lacking space, investing in a modern shower system can provide just as much luxury with a fraction of the footprint. Many shower systems now have all the bells and whistles to give you a spa-like experience, including massage, every time you step inside. Grand Designs With the advent of energy efficient appliances, lighting and heating systems, together with higher levels of insulation and smart passive design techniques, larger homes aren’t always more expensive to run. It has been common to see larger sites in Canterbury carved-up and subdivided but, for those that go against the grain, the real value is in those sites that retain their land, gardens and outlook. These sites are fast becoming the desirable ones. Smaller, modest homes aren’t always what clients are after – often our clients have large families, pets, and stunning sites that deserve homes that stretch out and into the landscape. At this level of the market, clients understand the value of incorporating energy efficient systems into their homes – solar
power is one such example which offsets running costs and can even pay for itself in just a few years. By putting more insulation into the home, they are also kept cooler in the summer, and warmer in the winter, which means less power is required. Larger homes often allow our clients the freedom to really flex both their and our own artistic thoughts. Rather than being constrained to one or two ideas, the scale of these projects allows different moods to be created across the home – from dark, moody powder rooms to bright and airy doubleheight living spaces. This contrast of scale and materiality within the house can really add drama to the designs. Grand Designs We will always recommend that larger houses be heated with a hydronic system such as wet underfloor heating or radiators – these systems provide a much more comfortable and temperate environment. The beauty of these systems is they can also be used in the winter months to heat the house, whilst in the summer switched over to heat the swimming pool. The capital outlay is subsequently less through reduced equipment requirements. However, this does need specialist input at the design stage to ensure all systems are talking to each other and space is properly allocated and designed for. Another common request from our clients wanting larger homes, is to design for large windows to allow the best visual and physical connection with the outside environment. The advent of argon-filled, Low-E double glazing means
much higher levels of thermal performance can be achieved with windows. This alpine kitchen in Lake Hayes is a fusion of oriental and commercial chic, with clean, straight lines, natural materials and earthy tones.
The kitchen features two islands. At one end of the chef’s island is a cantilevered teppanyaki grill mounted in Ceasarstone. On the pastry island, Ceasarstone along with marble has been used. A self-contained coffee making area affording sweeping views of the Remarkables is a special space within the home. Many of the functional elements are hidden behind six-coat Ameron lacquered soft close doors and panels, however a ‘feature wall’ with a 2.25m tall by 3.25m long, six door glass fronted cabinet is on display. Traditional Japanese sliding screens separate the kitchen from an informal dining and lounge area. The kitchen space was designed by Stefan Sonntag of Masterwood Joinery and won the Supreme Kitchen Design award at the 2019 NKBA Excellence in Design Awards.

Foley Group has been designing homes for over 30 years. One of the first questions we will ask a new client is whether their new home will be their ‘forever home’.
This is an important part of the briefing stage, where you identify if the project is a stepping stone house or a home you see yourselves growing old in. the garden? Do you work from home, or is work the last thing you want to think about when you get home from a long day’s work? Are you looking for a private sanctuary, or an open-door home where the neighbours are welcome to pop in at any time? We design homes which reflect how you live your lives now. But how about in a few years or decades too? When the children have left home, how will you use the large kitchen, family room, and playground area in the garden? By looking at not only how you wish to live now, but also how you see yourselves living in the future, we can start to plan your forever home.
The first decision may be single storey versus a two storey home. We are lucky enough in New Zealand to often have the space to build single storey as a default. If your section is smaller scale, a two storey design may be the only option. Negotiating stairs can became a strain later in life, so a single storey home may well be preferable. If this cannot be accommodated, perhaps consider how a space downstairs could be modified in the future to minimise the need for going upstairs. Could the family room be used as a master suite in years to come? It can if this is considered during the design phase. The family
Can the downstairs toilet be positioned next to a small study or store room, so that it can be extended and remodeled into a downstairs shower room in the future? Could it be located in such a way that it becomes the ensuite for the future master bedroom, to create a wellconsidered luxury suite? On a smaller scale, incorporating details such as level thresholds will not only give the impression of seamless indoor-outdoor flow now, it will reduce the number of trips and falls in later life. Adding additional dwangs in the bathroom not only allows for adding future storage units or towel rails in the imminent future, but grab rails for ease of getting around in later life and staying independent for as long as possible.
In the kitchen, consider how much storage you will need now and in later life. Could the items you will see yourself using in later years be accommodated in low cupboards to limit having to climb up to reach objects in high cupboards? Maybe you don’t see yourselves staying there for a lifetime, but maybe just while the kids are at home, is it likely that you will want to extend your house in the near future? Planning the best location for a future extension now will ensure minimal disruption later on. Considering your future life now can save you from making a hard decision on having to leave your forever home in the future. The Superhome Movement provides open source sharing of new technologies, innovations, and building techniques that help to deliver superior houses for everyone. From its origins in Canterbury the movement has gained momentum nationwide and now comprises affiliated contributors from as far as Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch,

The Superhome Movement opens up a variety of warm, environmentally sound homes to the public. This event has run in Christchurch annually since 2016 with tours in Auckland and Otago in 2018 and more planned nationally for 2020. With almost all currently available show homes being presented by group-home builders, the Superhome Tours offer the public a rare chance to see homes that exceed the building code which are not normally available to the public. BRANZ research shows 98 percent of new homes are built to building code minimum standards, therefore, falling short of the WHO standards. Bob’s own experiences drove him to be an advocate for healthy homes. During the Christchurch earthquakes, Bob and his wife lost their innovative, energy efficient home in the Port Hills. His family were forced to rent unhealthy homes and, as a direct result, he saw that it seriously affected the health their young children.
“That was kind of an unwanted experiment that really highlighted the issue. My solution was the Superhome Movement – and to spread the message about the health issues caused directly by unhealthy homes,” Bob says. One of the Superhome Movement’s primary modes for initiating behavioural change among the general public and the building industry is to showcase what is possible in energy efficient homes. This is done through the Superhome Tours which

Future-proofing your home Ecotectural Home Builders is future-proofing New Zealand homes to make them warmer, healthier and stronger.

In other countries, the building code goes by an airtightness instead of insulation rating, which gives a better understanding of how your home will perform.
“If you have a minimum requirement, everyone builds to that instead of anything beyond that to try and save money,” says Ecotectural managing director Daryl Combs.
Compared to the rest of the developed world, New Zealand is around 10 to 15years behind in terms of the building code.
While researching how to be a better home builder, he discovered The Superhome Movement.
He agreed with the ‘brave building standards’ of the movement and the philosophy of high performance housing, which is more cost-effective in the long run compared to the current building standards. “We’re really big on quality and making the most of the cost

Fire prevention Management of grass and the surrounding paddocks is essential in making sure your assets don’t go up in a blaze. Spraying, topping, and animal management will ensure that your pasture stays greener longer, you get more feed value, and your asset is less of a fire risk. Temporary electric fencing in the months leading up to your departure can help you manage the feed for your livestock, so you can use them as ‘moving lawnmowers’.
Having this electric fencing can keep your pasture tidy, as well as control the grass length. As summer comes around and spring passes, the grass dries up when it finishes its reproductive cycle. When that dry grass occurs on lifestyle blocks, it is rocket fuel for fire. The seed head on the tops of grass might look great for indie-style Christmas photoshoots, but it is highly invasive and flammable.

Make sure to spray the areas where the topper can’t reach, such as around fence lines and around the side of the property. This is very important to do with permanent electric fencing; a short in the fence can create a spark, which can start a fire in the long dry grass which is touching the fence. “It’s like using a lighter for a fire. It’ll suddenly ignite itself. So the idea is to keep all your fence lines, all around the buildings and everything like that, and spray them out. “Don’t leave it too late where it’s two to three foot high. You need to be doing it now before

Livestock care WORMS As it warms up, it’s more likely your young lambs and calves can become infested with worms. Worm eggs will attach themselves onto the grass and then hatch when it warms up. The larvae will then crawl up the grass and wait for the animals to eat it. From there, it’s a feast for the larvae to reproduce and grow. “Most drenches, whether oral or pour-on, have a wide range of efficiency against the various types of worms that are normally there. They have a pretty good kill rate, as far as that goes,” Doug says. Here are some signs you see in animals when they have worms (especially calves): • They will be less frisky and more lethargic • Their faeces will be runny and a black to brown colour • They will look sick, similar to having the flu.
For those who have a lot of animals, you can buy drenches at your farm supply stores. This is not always the most cost-effective option for those with few animals. To cater to lifestyle blocks, most country local vet clubs will have a service where you can pay for drenches by dose instead of buying the whole pack. If you only have a few animals, this option can save you around a hundred dollars to keep them safe from worms. LICE Another thing to watch out for in your animals is lice. Lice is a major problem because it affects the animal’s health. The lice sucks blood out of the animal, and it tends to happen when the animal is under stress. Animals don’t cope as well as humans. “There will be wool in the fence [from the sheep], and the calves scratch themselves so hard that the hair falls out in various places on their coats. Nine times out of 10, it’s lice. It’s very

transmittable. It works the same way; it hops from one animal to another,” Doug says. The easiest fix for this is to use a pour on. For cattle, you pour it down their backs depending on their body weight. For sheep, it’s slightly different. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t always need to shear before you use a pour on. It’s dependant on how much wool they have; some types of pour-on can be used on sheep with up to six months of wool. FLIES An often-overlooked bug that also affects the animal is the fly. We are coming up to fly strike season

when the grass grows and the temperature gets hotter with moist humid mornings, which are the ideal conditions for animals, mainly sheep and lambs to get fly struck. You need to be proactive in preventing flies from laying eggs in the area where the lambs are tailed or where the animals have areas that attract flies. Fly strike, or a blow fly maggot infestation, attacks swiftly. In this case, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and spraying the sheep early on with a recommended fly repellent will save you from chasing after infested animals especially leading into the holiday period.

Sorting the pros from the cons If you’re considering embarking on a home renovation project, it literally pays to be aware of the costly repercussions of using the wrong people.

Choosing the right tradespeople when building or renovating is vital, says the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). The PGDB and The Insurance Council of NZ have warned that mistakes are costly, and you could void your insurance.
