Pumpkin & Apple Gala at Luton Hoo on Saturday 13th October 2012
The Pumpkin and Apple Gala is a great day out for the whole family at the Luton Hoo Walled Garden. The event has been held for the past six years and last year attracted over 4,000 visitors. There are over 30 local schools, groups and charities involved in the Gala who will all be displaying their work in the main marquee (including an exhibition of 800 decorated pumpkins, squashes and gourds). There will also be a farmers market, show arena, falconry displays, horse logging demonstrations, dog show, face painting, live craft demonstrations, food demonstrators, a food court and refreshments with a hog roast, gourmet burgers, pumpkin soup and homemade cakes. There will be lots of entertainment including a walk around poet, folk singers, morris dancers, a craft fayre within a heated marquee and lots of children’s activities including rides, pumpkin shy and bouncy castle. The Pumpkin and Apple Gala runs from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 13th October 2012, entry prices are £7 adults,£3 under 15s, £5 students and +60s and family tickets are £15. Fitness & weight loss programs: Do you sabotage your success?
I
t is now is the time to face a cold hard fact.
For everyone who starts any program or class there are those that don’t make the progress that others do. We know that everyone is different but what actually does make the winners succeed and stay on track? And, what is it that makes others fail, wander off onto other tracks, get lost, and never succeed. Perhaps we can liken it to the Olympic athletes.What makes those who get selected better than those who don’t? In most cases the answer is attitude; attitude to stay focused and to train despite all the things that could side-track them. It is difficult but they do it, and those that do it best get the medals. So, I am going to ask you two easy questions about your attitude: 1. How much do you WANT to be slimmer or fitter, or whatever? If you want to you will be researching, finding the best way for you, putting it in place and doing it. 2. How much do you BELIEVE you can? Now, this is a completely different question.This is a bit scary for those who have been on diets for years, and are now back to square one; scary too, for those who are still paying for an unused gym membership, or who ‘gave up’ last time.There can be a lot of doubt, such as, ‘What if I fail again?’ When we have doubt in our minds we make excuses, we try to avoid the situation, or blame other things if we fail; ‘They don’t do that class now’, ‘I am too busy’, ‘She cooked it so I couldn’t say no’.There are so many excuses people use to justify why they haven’t done something. In many cases they are in a repeat mental program that started years ago. Unconsciously they are sabotaging their own progress. So, today I am suggesting that you get your priorities right. Improved fitness and health will make a huge 6
difference to you, your work and your relationships with others.You deserve that! Use your drive and determination to be a winner. And, if anyone even thinks of excuses, or finds themselves side-tracked, recognise it as a ‘self sabotaging belief blockage’ and deal with it now. I am very good at finding why unconscious blockages happen and freeing them.

From the marking and cutting to the hand stitching and finishing, every care is taken to produce an individual crafted item that when looked after will provide a lifetime of service. Mark told us, “Customers can choose the colour, bag size and style of fittings to be used. Some colours may take a little more time to source, but I always have stocks of black, dark brown and tan which are more traditional. As each stage of the construction is done by hand, I can incorporate the customer’s ideas creating a unique item. Leather is a natural product so it will improve with use and the colours will mature to become rich and deep. There is no menu of pricing as each bag is unique and will need more or less time and leather depending on the style. U
nder the old Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) CIS25 vouchers were issued to all subcontractors as evidence of CIS tax withheld from their invoices. All vouchers were sent to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) allowing them to quickly and easily verify the tax credits being claimed, allowing any resulting refund to be issued quickly and efficiently to the tax payer. From April 2007 the system was updated, with CIS cards replaced by a telephone verification system, CIS Vouchers abolished altogether, monthly returns replacing annual ones and a host of minor changes introduced. It has become apparent that a further problem with the “new” scheme lies in securing refunds of tax due to sub contractors. Since the abolition of CIS vouchers, nothing is submitted alongside the tax return to show that they have overpaid CIS tax at source and are due refunds and, as a result, HMRC have been withholding refunds of tax pending verification of the figures returned. HMRC are in no hurry to issue refunds, and where a tax return does not marry up with HMRC’s record, taxpayers can expect little action until they chase HMRC for a progress update. It can take several weeks just to get an explanation why a refund is being withheld.Thereafter
the taxpayer will typically need to compile large volumes of information in support of the claimed deduction, and weeks (or months) of correspondence with HMRC may follow. Difficult enough for tax agents, the mind boggles at how an unrepresented taxpayer might secure the refund due. Whilst guidance on recovering refunds of CIS has now been published by HMRC, this only applies to limited companies. So for now it seems that sub contractors seeking a refund of tax will need a careful record of their income and CIS deductions and a healthy dose of luck if they are to extract their money from HMRC.

the fox This month we visited the Fox in Woolmer Green, a friendly country pub offering home-cooked food in a very comfortable, relaxed atmosphere where everyone is made welcome.
L
andlady Janice Beevor took over the Fox a year ago, she has a lot of experience in hospitality including 8 years in Ibiza running a family bar in a family resort. The bar was a huge success but the time came for Janice to sell up and move back home a few years ago. She did a few part time jobs, working in an office and helping out in a pub but her passion soon drove her to find a pub to run and her search led her to McMullen who offered her the Fox. Janice told us, “Running a pub was something I’d been thinking of doing for a while, I wanted something that was small enough for me to run on my own and didn’t need a lot of staff. The Fox is perfect and most
importantly it’s a locals’ pub, the atmosphere is nice and friendly and the customers are absolutely lovely. They come from all over here, not just Woolmer Green, but they’re all regulars and I know what someone is drinking when they come through the door!” The Fox offers great classic pub food which is all homemade, fresh on the premises, with dishes such as Shepherd’s Pie, Chicken Curry, Battered fish, Chilli, Soup and homemade desserts including Apple Pie, Bread Pudding and Profiteroles. Singing for the Brain Singing for the Brain was first used within Alzheimer’s Society in 2003 and within Hertfordshire since 2010 and there are now 9 groups in total with Stevenage being one of them.
S
inging for the Brain in Stevenage is a fun, free service run by Alzheimer’s Society, this is a weekly group for people with Dementia and the people who care for them. Singing for the Brain helps give a sense of social inclusion with people meeting together, friendships are formed and people who come also meet socially outside the group. The sessions are an hour and a half and begin with a relaxed welcome with refreshments as people arrive, after about half an hour the singing leader calls everyone into a circle and uses a greeting song to welcome everyone by name. Once everyone is settled they begin with some gentle tried and tested vocal warm ups and breathing exercises used by singers around the world to strengthen the voice, ease tension and relax the muscles in hands, feet, neck and shoulders.This increases blood flow to the brain, helping to keep the brain in optimum condition. Action songs increase the playful exercise element and give challenges to the brain which other people with memory problems often cope with very well. Use of rounds, call and response and other ways of creating simple harmonies helps concentration. Well known songs are used to evoke verbal and emotional memories. New songs are taught to help challenge and extend skills. Sessions are usually unaccompanied though some leaders use light percussion or other accompaniment from participants. They generally finish with a quieter song as a calming finale and wish each other well until they meet next time. Sharon Meakin told us, “Our sessions are not just a singalong, they have structure, beginning with gentle warmup and breathing exercises, then a planned theme of songs sometimes with instruments, finishing with a warm down and goodbye song, feedback has told us this helps to promote a good sense of well being which they take away from the sessions and this can help the carers with their people at home. Research has shown that music
is one of the last things a person with Dementia will lose as the journey through their illness progresses, so we would like to encourage any person that has Dementia and people that care for them to come and try our sessions, they are FREE and really good fun!” Singing for the Brain meets on Thursdays at the Community Arts Centre on the Roaring Meg Retail Park at 2pm, for dates call Sharon Meakin on 01707 265326.
