St George’s Day on the 23rd April remembers St George, England’s patron saint. The anniversary of his death is seen as England’s national day. According to legend, he was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon and saved a princess. Quiltathon to raise money for Lister Renal Unit
Kimpton Village May Festival 4th to 7th May 2012
Icknield Quilters will be holding a Quiltathon in aid of Lister Renal Unit on 19th -20th May at Studio 39 in the Baldock High St, the same weekend as the Baldock Festival. Times are 10am - 9pm on Saturday and 10am - 4pm on Sunday. People will be sponsored at £5 per hour to come and sew, press, make coffee etc. Glaxo Smith Kline will be doubling whatever they raise. Other sponsors include Aurifil Threads, Threads and Patches for wadding, Loose Ends for the quilting, Beecrafty for needles, Lunnon’s printers in Baldock for the raffle tickets, and John Lewis for raffle prizes. The quilt is based on the Liberated Star design (see photo) and will be raffled on the 10th September at Baldock Community Centre at 9pm. Raffle tickets will be on sale at £1 each and will be available at the Baldock Festival weekend from their stall, where they will also be selling quilty items.
The Annual Kimpton May Festival started in 1964 to raise funds to repair the roof of the village church, proceeds are split three ways between; church restoration fund, Kimpton Memorial Hall and other community projects and worthy causes. “The Best of British” is the theme of this year’s 48th Kimpton May Festival. What a year 2012 promises to be with both the London Olympics and the Queens Diamond Jubilee to look forward to. Given these iconic events in the same year, the May Festival team have chosen a broad theme to allow the community groups of Kimpton to choose a float theme that could fit either of these! Attracting thousands of visitors each year, the festival is recognised as one of the biggest and brightest village festivals in the UK. The Saturday street procession will be a genuine spectacular, with themed floats from every section of the Kimpton community, culminating in the crowning of the 2012 May Queen. Four solid days of events start on Friday 4th May with the Art show opening night in the 13th century church and an exclusive wine event hosted by Mark Buckenham of The Wine Society. ‘Music Night on Sunday showcases local bands and a great Robbie Williams tribute act and Saturday night’s concert ‘Kimpton Entertains’ has helped launch a few showbiz careers. Children’s activities include fairground rides, candy floss, a football tournament, maypole dancing, a programme of entertaining arena events on the Saturday includes “Sheep racing” (truly hysterical) and Sheep Shearing that will educate and entertain the audience, music from our local Samba band. No May Festival is complete without some active resident participation and this year we add “Wacky barrow races” to the arena – “Gardeners World” this is not! Jazz bands, 10k fun-run, a craft fair, barbecues, bars, a giant charity auction, Morris dancers, a car boot sale, traditional music sessions, maypole dancing – it’s wall-to-wall fun for the whole of the long weekend in this lovely village that won the title of Hertfordshire Village of the year 2008 (West). W
e first met Peter and Kim at the Station last year, a couple of months after they had just taken over the pub with a new born baby! This month we met up with them again to see how their first year has been. Peter explained how the first year has been very positive, having seen a great growth in the business, especially in the dining side They have recently launched a new menu which has been really well received, with some favourites already showing – the Mexican Chilli Basket, The Southern Fried Chicken Burger, Prawn Skewers and Steak Sizzler have all been very popular. Pétanque has also become very popular with more teams using The Station as their home piste. In the last year they have seen an increase in families coming to visit The Station, and now have a Mum’s club every second Wednesday morning from 9am. Mums can bring the children along (or not) and have a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits, relax and meet other mums in the area.
We asked Peter, what have been the highs of the last 12 months? “The high is really feeling embraced by the community, we feel as though our family have really become part of The Station / Knebworth family. Also, watching the business develop over the last 12 months, hearing the great comments we now get from people and being a part of the change of the pub, it is no longer a no go zone, it is no longer rough and dangerous. Our children Deanna-Mae and Jaidyn now have extended ‘pub’ family, which is great because mine and Peters families are so far away.” How about the lows? “In terms of lows.... lack of sleep, with 2 children and the pub, sleep has evaded us for the past year. We are looking forward to taking a small break this year to recharge the batteries and spend time together as a family... actually having a day off ”. Peter went on to say, “We would not change a thing though, we love Knebworth, love the pub and love what we do.We feel really excited about the next 12 months, hopefully it will be more of the same, more growth and development, more happy people.We are becoming more involved in the community, helping fundraise for Knebworth Preschool, and getting involved in charities such as wish house (we are doing a Crazy Horse Racing night on Friday 27th April).We have the garden which will hopefully get some good use in the warm weather and we will be having a family fun day in July.There will be lots more fun family events to follow in the year ahead.We feel really positive moving forward, the girls are really settled and we do not plan to go anywhere in a hurry!” We have eaten at the Station on a number of occasions and are really pleased to hear how well things have gone for Peter and Kim, they are a lovely couple and have made the Station a really nice family pub!

Inspiration for those school holidays... As schools tighten their belts on taking out your children during term time, you will find yourself reduced to a few weeks throughout the year to get that all important breakaway. So where should you go?
As spring approaches for the Easter break, Egypt is a great destination on a relatively short flight with beautiful weather. STEPPING BACK IN TIME

ast month we introduced Conscience, a controversial book and play by Johnny Tait.This month we find out a bit more about the Codicote based Comedian and Author. Johnny was born in Lambeth, London. He is a genuine Cockney and ironically was christened in St Stephen’s Church in the middle of Albert Square. Johnny dreamed of being in show businesses and at the age of 11, stared in a full-length feature film alongside Jack Wild and Mark Lester, called ‘SWALK’. In 1977 he joined Butlins Bognor Regis as a Red Coat. (This was a way for people to get in to show business). After learning the ropes he joined Doniford Bay Holiday Park as Entertainments Manager and then went on to lead teams at various other parks. He was also the Entertainments Manager on the Cruise ferry ‘Pride of Le Harve’. His career to date has taken him to literally thousands of cabaret venues, both as a stand up Comedian and specialist ‘Cockney Comic‘. He also regularly gets booked as an after dinner speaker. Johnny is very popular due to his art of story telling with a smile and never being blue. He has performed at holiday resorts in Turkey, Spain, Majorca & Minorca, Greece and all of the Canary Islands, he has also performed for Her Majesty’s Forces in various Countries including Cyprus & Germany, not to mention all over the British Isles. Amongst his many theatre appearances he has performed as the warm up for household names such as Freddie Starr and Joe Longthorne in theatres Nationwide. He has raised a lot of money for charity by putting on pantomimes locally where he has performed as ‘Buttons’ and ‘The Villain’, whilst raising over £11,000 for Danesbury and QVM Hospital. Johnny spent the last 2 years creating the Conscience book and play and although he still loves touring, he is hoping the book will launch his career as a playwright. Conscience is already on the way to becoming a best seller and has received a lot of great press. Johnny will be signing copies of Conscience in Waterstones, Stevenage on the 24th April.The book is available in all good book stores and online at Amazon.com. ZOKU Shotokan Karate Club ‘Karate is for everyone. It is a traditional art, a way of life and discipline. No matter what your abilities or your age, your flexibility or your disability, it is the perfect activity for all.’
S
arah Fullarton has been practising Shotokan Karate for 22 years, having first been inspired by an open evening at nine years-old. Later she would discover a talent for teaching, opening her first club at 15 with her father, George Fullarton. Sixteen years on and their club is still going strong. ‘I was shy with most things, but when it came to karate I was confident and mature. Black belt was my aim, and I never missed a grading or championship over the years getting there.’ Despite not many progressing to the higher belts, Sarah stayed, until at one point there was no one left but her and some guy who liked cars. Lewis Hamilton, or something like that. After reaching brown belt, she was encouraged to start helping out instructors at her classes. ‘For some reason, the students really listened to me; I could explain things to them that others found hard to get across.’ However, things became more strenuous when her and her father tried setting up their own club. ‘We were opening extra lessons, attending school-fetes, holding one-off ladies’ defence classes. It didn’t help that I was trying to study for my GCSEs at the same time! Some of the male members also made it clear that they didn’t like being taught by a child, especially a girl.We eventually asked these people to leave and haven’t come across anyone like that since.The experience has made me a stronger person.’ Over the years, Sarah has seen her association become highly family-orientated. ‘It’s an ideal activity for families. We allow children to train with the adults, treating both the same as each other.This leads the adults to respect children in a way they never thought possible, with the children wanting to grow up and mature quicker so they can be on par with their elders.They say families who play together stay together, and we’ve seen parents establishing friendships with their children, working as a
team and achieving together.’When setting up their own organisation in 2010, Sarah and George named it ‘ZOKU Shotokan Karate Club’, ‘Zoku’ being Japanese for family. For the individual, karate certainly provides a broad range of self-enhancing skills. ‘What most students fail to realise are the manners, discipline, courtesy and patience they’re gaining during their time in the classes. It can have benefits for many specific groups also; for shy students it boosts self-esteem, for those with ADHD it provides an outlet for their energy and for those with autism it helps with their constant need for routine.The concentration and memory skills it enables have also been proven to help with children’s schoolwork.’ And as for Sarah personally? ‘Its helped me remain calm in stressful situations, and has given me the ability to pass on knowledge to others in an understandable way. Most of all, it’s given me confidence and determination, alongside a belief that you can achieve anything you want to as long as you set a goal and go down the right path.’
