One of the great things about riding motorbikes is that there are so many different ways to use them. Pass your test and you can actually enjoy the journey to work. You can turn up at Boxhill, the local pub or bike club and feel part of the biking community instead of being one of the masses who look on enviously from their Ford Mondeos, having spent their hard earned cash on a kitchen extension when they could have bought a Ducati. Legal Corner Rider ‘chased’ by unmarked police car We recently acted for Mr L, who was riding home on his Suzuki GSXR750 after a late shift, when he saw a car driving close behind him with very bright lights. We recently acted for Mr L, who was riding home on his Suzuki GSXR750 after a late shift, when he saw a car driving close behind him with very bright lights.

How did it help? The client received a 30-day disqualification and an endorsement on his licence. He received no penalty points or fine.

He was concerned for his safety and speeded up to escape the car, which he felt was being driven in a hostile manner.

Mr L was followed by the car for eight miles along an A road near Cambridge, before it was revealed to be an unmarked police car. Our client had slowed down to below the speed limit through villages then accelerated away when between villages in national speed limit zones. Whilst trying to escape the car, Mr L had sometimes ridden at over 100mph. He was charged with speeding and crossing a solid white line, and faced up to nine penalty points, a 56-day disqualification or a £1,000 fine. What we did Although many people in this situation might feel that because they were being ‘chased’ they hadn’t actually committed an offence, we advised our client that this would only work as a defence if he’d speeded up then pulled over, out of the way. We therefore advised him to plead guilty and instructed an expert barrister to offer a plea in mitigation in order to reduce the sentence.

Jon Kirkham Last season Jon Kirkham was 2010 Metzeler National Superstock 1000 champion, which was a huge achievement on its own, let alone the fact that Jon funded his own BMW S1000RR team. He struggled most of the season with funding by personal sponsorship before Samsung stepped in for the last 4 races and pulled the championship off with two rounds in hand. met Jon Kirkham at Brands Hatch, where the Samsung Crescent Suzuki Team were testing for the wild card rides at the Silverstone World SuperBike meeting. I was lucky enough to be able to get a few minutes of the rider’s time to have a chat. Meeting Jon was a real pleasure, he is one of the most unassuming young men I have ever met, some racers I have come across are quite full of themselves, or have a team behind them telling them how wonderful they are. Don’t get me wrong, everyone needs to be told at times that they should believe in themselves, but there are a small number that start to believe the hype just a little too much. Fame can go to these 6

young riders’ heads but Jon Kirkham is one young man who needs to get more publicity to match his ability. His personality is warm, friendly and totally endearing, but Jon has a great team around him too. The softly spoken Kirkham has been tipped as a world class British prospect for the future and, after meeting him, I can see why and there isn’t a bad word to be heard about him around the pits. Having said all that, Jon Kirkham is a determined, single minded and very driven racer. So I managed to get five minutes to chat with him in between testing. SEB: Jon, I wanted to congratulate you for the amazing season last year becoming 2010 Metzeler National Superstock 1000 champion. You were so consistent and won nearly every round but you had a really tough time with sponsorship. JK: Thanks, yes it was a great year last year, but it was tough. I had to work really hard to get sponsorship to be able to then ride. I am really proud of being able to do that, of course I didn’t do it on my own, I have so many people to thank for sticking by me.

SEB: What’s it like then coming from Superstock 1000 to riding for one of the top teams, Samsung Crescent Suzuki in MCE British Superbikes? JK: It just doesn’t compare from last year to now riding at the top. I was so lucky to be able to get the ride with the Samsung Crescent Suzuki team, they are awesome. The lads are great to work with, they help me so much with the set up of the bike. I have had some great races and some poor races so far this season. I can’t say enough positive things about them, I know I have just got to get more confidence in the bike. Since the win at Croft I have struggled with tyre wear, chatter and top end speed. But one thing that I am sure about,with this team working with me, I can be up there fighting for a top six place. SEB: Your maiden race win at Croft must have given you a boost and showed that you can run at the front. You now know that the bike can do it, is it you now believing you can do it? JK: The race was so great, of course for me, as I won and the weather helped too, but I was a second faster than I was last year on my Superstock bike in good weather. The team found a good setting and it all seemed to click and I had a lot of confidence in the bike.Trying the different settings seemed to help and today I have found a little bit more from the bike. SEB: John Hopkins is your Samsung Crescent team mate, being an ex MotoGP rider, does that help you or do you feel pressure? It can undoubtedly work both ways with having someone so experienced? JK: I am running a good three seconds slower than John (Hopkins) today here at Brands. He is just so fast I think if you watch him ride he seems to be part of the bike. John is an amazing rider, he’s ridden in MotoGP and every time he gives 100%. It has really helped me being his teammate and racing with someone so fast, if I can get close to his times then I know I am doing well. Ultimately, you want to match your team mate’s times, if not beat them. SEB: As I watched you riding round the track it looked like you were struggling with the front end and trying to keep the front wheel on the track. JK: Yes, we have to check through the data to see how we can stop that, but there is so much power coming from the rear end that the front just wants to come up. The bike is feeling good now so I am looking forward to the next few races, I just need to keep both wheels on the tarmac! South East Biker Magazine • www.southeastbiker.co.uk

SEB: One thing I have noticed Jon is that you really seem to be enjoying the racing. You always seem to be smiling, looking round the pits you can see the riders that either don’t get on with their teams or their teammates, but not with you. JK: I’ve been riding for a while but for me to be in MCE British Superbikes with the Samsung Crescent Racing team is a huge learning curve but of course I’m loving it. The thing is I am racing bikes for a living, so what more can I say. SEB: This is the first time you’ve been on a really competitive bike with a great chance to win races, which you have proved by winning at Croft. You have done so well so far, you’re finishing in the top ten, if not top six most races. JK: That’s right I’ve never been in a big team where I can just concentrate on the riding and it is fantastic. Of course as I said before, I am loving every minute, but then there is the pressure to do well. I just want to do a good job, not just for me but for the Samsung Crescent Suzuki team, my personal sponsors and my family that have been behind me 100% all the time. SEB: Looking forward Jon, what are the hopes and dreams for Jon Kirkham racing’s future? JK: I would like to be here with the Samsung Crescent Suzuki team next season, to be racing for the championship title. I feel there is so much more I can do with this bike and I am looking forward to the changes to next season which will make the MCE British Championship more competitive and even more exciting for the spectators. As I said at the beginning of this interview, Jon has to be the nicest guy I’ve met in the paddock and undoubtedly a really bright future lies ahead for him. We met up with the Samsung Crescent Suzuki team at Castle Coombe for what turned out to be a fun day — racing `everything from the Samsung Crescent Suzuki British Superbike to Jon taking his Mercedes Van round against the MCE British Superbike Safety car. Jon looked like something out of Top Gear, he did a great impression of the Stig. Good luck Jon, we think the future is very bright for Kirkham racing and would like to thank Samsung Crescent Suzuki and Jon Kirkham for their co-operation and time. n 7

SUZUKI GSX-R 600

A Gixxer for the day An excitable Simon Richards finally vists Crescent Suzuki, in Southamption, to get his hands on a GSX-R 600 for the day.

went to the bike show in February where I saw my first glimpse of the new GSXR600. Was I impressed? There was a lot to look at that day. My eyes were all over the new ZX10 but I got a picture of me on the GSXR so there was definitely something there between us. I have always been a fan of the GSXR since a chap down the pub had a GSXR1100. This was quite a few years ago now and I was quite young and a GSXR was out of the question and so started drooling over the RGV250 which was more 8

likely at the time. Sadly neither was purchased (my paper round didn’t pay well) and the regular trips to what was back then Motorcycle City in Farnborough, continued…and continued…and continued. When I saw the Gixxer 600 at the bike show I was put off by the front of the bike. The rest looked great but the headlight and nose seems to be from the Hayabusa and I just wasn’t a fan of it on the 600. It looked odd. I think they call it a Bobfoc (Body of Baywatch, Face of Crimewatch).

However I recently went down to Crescent Suzuki in Southampton. I had been in contact with them about test riding the 600 and so I travelled down and met Stewart. Stewart was incredibly friendly and easy going and a genuinely nice bloke. We had a chat, and in no time I was looking at their new demo bike. Very low mileage and new tyres made the ears prick up. Stewart talked me through the bike’s features and mentioned the drive mode selector (which I kept away from), the brembo calipers and the gear position indicator.

He also mentioned that it is nine kilos lighter and proceeded to hand over the keys and off I went. First impressions – it felt great. It was so easy to ride. So smooth and light on the gears. And so quick! I rode the bike back up the M3 and then picked up the A31. On the open roads I was able to really open it up and just a tiny twist of the throttle and it was off. It was incredibly fast and I felt I should have been on a race track rather than a road. Around corners it was light and flowed with ease and then, back up through the gears on the straight, it took off like a rocket. It was light, quick and easy and felt great. As for the Bobfoc; it grew on me. Sir Francis Bacon once said “There is no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in the proportion”. When I got off to take pictures I didn’t seem to notice and, by the end of our brief affair, I realised that I’m not shallow, I like 10

the package and I didn’t really notice my earlier observation. After riding through the Hampshire countryside feeling like I’d left a wake behind me, I returned the bike to its rightful owners. GETTING DOWN AND DIRTY-ISH

Nick Tunstill heads to the Kent Countryside to having a dirty weekend on two wheels.

t all started so well, a beautiful sunny September morning, bacon rolls and tea in the Kent countryside. We all had to go and collect our kit; helmet, gloves, trousers, shirt, boots… great, chest protector and neck brace, getting serious now. Off for some warm up exercises to loosen us all up, stretching, not bad, touching the toes, tricky, a spot of running? Feeling that bacon roll now! Ric Newton and his MXCP assistants, Angus MacLeod and Marcus Coulson, put us through our paces before dividing us into groups, school playground style. Next we look at the bikes, Suzuki DR-Z125’s, we have all ridden road bikes before so the controls are 16

obviously the same. That was the end of the similarity to tarmac riding. Riding in a straight line you are standing on the pegs, gripping with your knees, tipping into the corner you have your elbows out, b******s on the tank and relevant leg out forwards while hanging off the bike. Interesting, and it takes a bit of time to adjust the brain. We start on some simple circuits, practising these basic techniques. A short session of motocross is surprisingly tiring, even after the first few laps most are struggling for breath. The groups are small enough not to worry about other riders and itâ€™s not as intimidating as your first trackday. Next up some bumps are introduced, then we move onto table tops, berms and the infamous water filled bomb hole. Each session leaves you more exhilarated and exhausted as you develop your technique, get a proper feel for the bike and track and start to push yourself more. Inevitably you crash (except Pete, was that due to skill or lack of speed??), the light bikes enable you to pick them up, dust yourself off and carry on.

After several sessions I was starting to feel more comfortable with, and get a feel for, the rear tyre spinning in the dirt as I opened the throttle. Filtering AND THE Legal Pitfalls An issue that is raised, when it comes to motorcycle liability, is filtering. Motorbikes can and do filter but where do you stand legally? SImon Richards from Access Legal writes...

he Highway Code gives guidance for driver and riders on filtering. In particular Rule 88 states that a driver or rider in traffic queues should be particularly wary of vehicles emerging from junctions and it also states that when filtering in slow moving traffic you should take care and keep to a slow speed. Rule 162 and 163 advise to only overtake when the road is sufficiently clear ahead. Rule 166 states that you must not overtake if there is any doubt, or where you cannot see far enough ahead to be sure it is safe. Powell v Moody is an old case from 1966. It was a straightforward case with the defendant car driver, waiting in a side road wanting to turn right to join a main road. A lorry driver on the main road, in traffic left a gap ahead and invited the defendant to exit the side road. As the defendant did so the claimant, who was riding a motorcycle and filtering past the queuing traffic collided with the defendant. The trial judge found the plaintiff motorcyclist 80% to blame. Lord Justice Salmon made an interesting comment. He said that the plaintiff was “undertaking an operation fraught with great hazard”. The case of Worsfold v Howe [1979] is definitely worth a mention. The circumstances were again that a car was proceeding out of a minor road to turn right. A petrol tanker had stopped in heavy traffic in the nearside lane but left a gap for the car in the minor road. The Defendant came out slowly, however collided with a motorcyclist who was in the offside lane collided with the Defendant’s vehicle. This case went to appeal and was decided on a 50/50 apportionment. Hillman and Tomkins, a 1995 case involved a defendant who was on a main road who turned right and collided with a motorcyclist who was filtering past the cars on the road. The recorder decided that the defendant was not positioned clear of the line of traffic and was under a great duty to check that all was clear from behind but 20

also that the plaintiff was travelling at such a speed that he was quite unable to take any avoiding action. He commented that “the fact of that matter is, undesirable as it might be, motorcyclists do and can be expected to overtake in circumstances of this kind…”. Based on the findings he apportioned blame equally. In Davis v Schrogin, a 2006 case, the defendant was in a queue in a car. He decided to get out of the queue by performing a u-turn and going back the way he had come. As he emerged he collided with a motorcycle. The claimant was filtering but was there to be seen. The trial judge found that the defendant was negligent in making his U-turn without looking properly to his right and the Claimant could not have avoided the collision. In a 2007 there was a case called Farley v Buckley that involved a scooter rider who was filtering around a large lorry that was indicating left at some considerable speed who collided with a vehicle as it exited a side road in front of the lorry. The judge said it was not foreseeable that a motorcycle would be overtaking the lorry at such speed and found in favour of the car driver. In the 2011 case of Ben Woodham v Turner it was the driver emerging from a minor road who was held to carry the majority of the liability. The judge in this case said the defendant emerging from the minor road bore the greater share of responsibility however the claimant’s lack of due heed for his own safety made him substantially responsible and he concluded that the defendant should bear 70 per cent of the blame and the claimant 30 per cent. So you must continue to ride or drive in such a way that you can immediately deal with any emergency, you must contemplate the possibility of vehicles giving warning of their presence by inching out and must so organise your riding so as to guard against this possibility and you must not travel at such a speed that you are unable to take any avoiding action. Earlier this year we featured local rider Rob Guiver and his hopes for the 2011 racing season in the Sunoco British 125GP Championship, now as the season approaches its conclusion and the crucial final round being at Rob`s local circuit Brands Hatch we catch up with how Rob`s season has gone so far. 22

arlier this year we featured local rider Rob Guiver and his hopes for the 2011 racing season in the Sunoco British 125GP Championship, now as the season approaches its conclusion and the crucial final round being at Rob`s local circuit Brands Hatch, we catch up with how Rob`s season has gone so far. After a long hard winter, the season started over the very hot Easter weekend at Brands Hatch`s short Indy circuit. Rob had spent much time trying to lose weight from his machine to gain the best engine performance and all so crucial top speed. Practice went well, but in the race day warm up session the engine seized, after a hasty rebuild by Rob`s team before the race Rob made the grid. However bad luck struck again on the second warm up lap when the bike partially seized again, the race had to be restarted though and Rob knew his bike had a 50/50 chance of finishing the race. He started in 3rd place and moved up to 2nd but after his bike showed signs of slowing, his engine again seized at Paddock Hill Bend on lap 7 giving Rob a disappointing start to the season and no points on the board! The following week the team were out at a sunny but breezy Oulton Park in Cheshire and, despite being blown onto the grass in qualifying, Rob secured pole position. Again the race day morning warm up jinx appeared, with his engine having a water leak from a stone having gone through his radiator, however with this problem solved he went on to win the race by 8 seconds!! Round 3 saw the series move to Croft in North Yorkshire two weeks later, a much October-November 2011 â€˘ South East Biker Magazine

different circuit to the previous two with some bumpy sections and stop/start and fast flowing turns; this is one of Rob`s favourite circuits. Despite on and off rain all weekend Rob secured 2nd place on the grid and, with a long wait until the last race of raceday, went on to win after a long battle with Kyle Ryde. Round 4 at the end of May saw the team travel to a cold, wet and windy Thruxton circuit in Hampshire. Rob won his second pole position of the season and, on a rainy race day, he won the race as many of his rivals failed to cope with the very difficult track conditions. Mid June saw the annual visit to Scotland and the Knockhill circuit which is an 8 hour journey from Rob`s home in Essex! Friday`s free practice saw Rob fastest in the wet conditions, however qualifying the next day saw Rob crash, but with the team again doing a great job off track, Rob secured 2nd place on the grid for sunday’s race. The race saw Rob pushed off line unfairly on more than one occasion by another rider which resulted eventually in Rob crashing out as he himself made a mistake. Rob rejoined the race determined to try to score some points and such was his pace that he rejoined the race a lap down and soon caught the race leaders to unlap himself however his great effort was in vain as he finished the race in 16th place and did not increase his points tally. However he still led the championship by 10 points at this stage. The next round and the halfway stage of the season saw the championship visit the all new Snetterton 300 circuit in Norfolk. In qualifying Rob led the first session and held this throughout the second session, but in the race Rob was just pipped by Wayne Ryan for the all important race win. Mid July saw the series visit Oulton Park for the second time this year but how conditions changed. Mixed weather for the two qualifying days saw Rob on pole position even though in saturday’s cold, wet conditions Rob slipped off but still achieve his 4th pole position of the season by 7/10s of a second a big gap in 125 terms! In the race Rob got the holeshot and led into the first corner.However such were the conditions that tiptoeing around at times and also having to avoid fallen riders was the order of the day as in the end points make prizes and Rob wanted to increase his Championship lead. Rob eventually finished 3rd giving him a 20point championship lead and described the conditions there as the worst he had ever raced in. the race ended the meeting was abandoned due to the weather and track conditions. Early August saw Rob return home to Brands Hatch and this time the GP circuit, “the best track on the calendar” as Rob describes it. Friday’s practice was unusually a test on the shorter Indy circuit and with rain Friday evening leaving damp conditions Rob qualified 3rd in Saturday’s sessions for sunday’s race. Race day produced dry, sunny weather a nice change after recent meetings! Rob had a speed disadvantage along the long straights and had to make time up on his younger, lighter rivals with some great overtaking moves into the corners. However he finally finished in 3rd place as his rivals’ top speed came out on top at the end of their race long battles. Rob left Brands for the short journey home with a 16 point lead in the championship with 4 rounds to go! Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire hosted round 9 of the series over the August Bank Holiday weekend Race day and the final race of a difficult and sad afternoon where the sport lost a great young talent, MWR Gearlink Kawasaki rider Ben Gautrey in the Superstock 600 race. Rob knew he needed a good result with his main title rivals close to him on the grid, Kyle Ryde took the lead and extended this lap by lap with Rob battling with Wayne Ryan for 2nd place, Rob finally appeared to have secured 2nd place over Wayne when on the 11th lap of the 12 lap race distance Rob`s chain came off going over the Mountain ending his race very suddenly and leaving him with no points scored and now leaving the three top championship contenders covered by a gap of just 6 points with just 3 nail biting rounds to go ! The Donington Park race in September over 14 laps of the Grand Prix circuit saw Rob in 6th place after 2 laps moving up to 5th for the next 5 laps and into 4th place on lap 8 but still with some work to do to catch the leader of the race. Rob secured 3rd place on lap 9 and remained in this position to the end of the race to at least achieve a podium position after his mechanical disappointment at Cadwell. The 3 championship leaders are still separated by just 7 points and now with just 2 races left at Silverstone and Brands Hatch it’s a championship going down to the wire! ith over 150 pre-1980 machines on display in the indoor Show Hall, competition will be fierce in the 10 classes and especially so for the hotly contested Best Club Stand prize. Judging is by Frank Westworth of RealClassic magazine, who sponsor the Show. An unenviable task given the standard and number of 24

machines on display. Their Guest of Honour is Gordon May and Peggy, the ‘Overland to Egypt’ Bantam. Peggy is a 125cc 1952 BSA D1 Bantam that took Gordon a total of 6,500 miles from Manchester, UK, to Cairo, Egypt and back. A challenge for most motorcycles, but quite something on an antiquated 125cc 1952 BSA Bantam. Gordon’s first attempt

at the journey, in August and September 2009, ended with a major engine failure in north-eastern Italy. Undeterred, Gordon set off again in the spring of 2010 with a completely rebuilt engine, with a new route across the Mediterranean to Tunisia then along the north coast of Libya and Egypt. On the return leg, the plucky little twostroker crossed the Sinai before heading north through Jordan and Syria. After a short ferry crossing from Turkey to Greece, Gordon tracked back up the Adriatic coastline of Albania and Croatia before retracing the route of his first foray over the Alps but in reverse. Lest We Forget At the end of a week that saw the lowest elements of society destroying their own communities and businesses, it was refreshing to have something positive to look forward to in the form of the Afghan Heroes ride from Ebbslfleet to RAF Manston. Nick Tunstill joins the riders

he early start meant a lovely traffic free jaunt across Kent to Ebbsfleet International near Gravesend to the meeting point in one of the huge car parks. Having pre-registered via the website, we simply rode up, collected a wrist band and parked up to refuel with tea. The wonderful site of bikes bedecked with Union and Afghan Heroes flags greeted us and I just had to buy one and then spend twenty minutes working out how to fix it to the Tiger. The organisers had done a splendid job by laying on breakfast and toilet facilities so, by the time we ready to roll, all were refreshed and eager. For those who haven’t taken part in an escorted event of this kind, it’s quite an experience and well worth joining in. The police and riders from Unity guided us through every red light, roundabout and junction, while at the same time keeping all 1000 bikes in one column for nearly two hours, quite some feat and a highly skilled and impressive job. They stopped the traffic all along the route which hopefully gave those car drivers some time to reflect on what we were trying to highlight, namely the forces in Afghanistan. We were waved at and applauded by drivers, truckers, cyclists, horse riders, kids with

their parents from bridges, outside houses, shopping stations and petrol stations. I felt a little bit of a fraud as I was simply riding my bike on a summer sunday, which I would have been doing anyway but it was heartwarming to see so many people support the cause. The route was an interesting mixture of motorways, dual carriageway, towns and villages, and twisty country tarmac. I don’t think I have ever ridden in the UK for nearly two hours before without putting my foot down… awesome! As we approached RAF Manston, who were holding their Spitfire Day, the public lined the road and waved as we pulled into the base and parked up. Manston has a fascinating museum with a Spitfire and a Hurricane and plenty of aviation items and stories of past conflicts and pilots; well worth a visit on its own. With Remembrance Sunday approaching, spare a thought for those still out in Afghanistan. ast July saw the annual Huntsman Motorcycle Show at Eridge. Each year this event becomes larger with bikers travelling from further afield as the word spreads. An interesting mix of classic, modern and ‘interesting’ derivations provides plenty to look at and chat about. A live band, great barbcue food and local ale complete a relaxed Sunday afternoon in the sun. Next year the plan is to include local camping on the Saturday night. Keep an eye on SEB for details. NEWS FROM THE MOTORCYCLE ACTION GROUP Fighting on behalf of bikers

EU faces harassment of women riders charge! Now that may look like a headline from a tabloid newspaper, but it is unbelievably, true! Let us explain…

AG member and analyst extraordinaire, Jon Strong, has been diligently trawling the small print of European law, ever since the EU released the consultation paper on the Periodic Technical Inspections, or the Super MoT as we came to know it, last year. There was an abysmal ‘online only’ consultation, which, although affecting non-English speaking countries more than us, was available in English only. The questions were in some cases, impossible to answer and also regularly phrased in such a way that you couldn’t disagree. ‘Would you like the cost of your roadworthiness test to go up by 20% or 30%?’ but not ‘none of the above, thanks’. It was also a question that made no sense if your country didn’t have a test, because zero can’t increase by 20%! Anyway, Jon was incensed by the consultation and after using official complaint procedures, wouldn’t accept the responses he got. So kept going to higher authorities, until the EU said they weren’t going to talk to him anymore and threw their toys out of the pram. This just got Jon mad, so he found another issue to raise through official channels; ‘Failure to provide requested documents under Article 42 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU’. The more he got his teeth into the whole process and the more he examined the Commission and the way so many Regulations are drafted, the angrier he became as he uncovered shoddy research, poor drafting, lack of integrity and unsubstantiated claims.

This led him to examine the Type Approval Regulation we are currently fighting, where he found that in Annex 18 the EU Commission admit they haven’t got the proof to support some of what they want to do, but they hope to find it soon!! Then there is the SafeRider project, which has been working on ideas like automated braking systems and haptic (or vibrating) throttles and saddles when the computer on your bike senses danger or thinks you are going too fast. Of all the complaints Jon raised against the EU, only one has been turned down, the rest are ‘game on’ so to speak and, having been upheld by the European Ombudsman, have an investigation case number. (ref 0875/2011/jf) So what, you may ask, is the harassment of women all about? Well Jon considered the vibrating saddles investigated by the SafeRider project and wondered if thousands of Euros had been wasted on something that hadn’t been properly assessed. Had the EU, in their impact assessment, considered the harassment of women? What if someone knows that the saddle of a scooter vibrates when a following car gets too close? What would the implications be if a sexual predator decided to use his car to get a female rider to take her mind off the road, so to speak? Surely the EU would be guilty of enabling harassment? You may be thinking I’m not serious, but if the EU are going to keep introducing crazy ideas, Riders’ October-November 2011 • South East Biker Magazine

As I write this, the UK government seems to be supporting MAG’s stance on many of the subjects within the Type Approval and Market Surveillance Regulation, which is excellent news and testament to everyone who wrote a letter, met their MP or rode on the 25th. The EU Regulation is threatening compulsory ABS, Anti-tampering, fixed gearing, no tuning or fitting different exhausts and even limits on aftermarket parts (depending on what kind of Anti-Tampering is finally used), but continued campaigning will soften the blow to biking and the motorcycle industry. As with MAG, the UK Government were far from convinced by the Impact Assessment the EU did before the Regulation was released and have done one themselves, which they are asking riders to comment on until Oct 28th. www.dft.gov.uk/ consultations.

Please note however, this is a consultation into the UK Impact Assessment, an 86 page document of statistics and analysis, NOT a consultation on the EU Regulation as one weekly publication mistakenly announced, but the last 3 questions are relevant to broad views on the Regulation, so do please have a look. Then in France there is domestic legislation for a ban on bikes over 7 years old from urban areas, compulsory day-glo/reflective clothing, no filtering through traffic and in Ireland compulsory full sleeve day-glo for riders and pillions! The onslaught continues. Today I’ve just seen ‘that’ Nissan car advert that condones killing riders! Whatever the issue, MAG members just seem to rise to the occasion. suppose that’s why a recent advert in this very publication for a bike meet at a National Trust property caught my eye; an unusual combination that seemed oddly appealing. The thought of a bike meet usually conjures up images of greasy spoon cafés, country pubs or burger vans by the seaside. The opportunity to gather at ‘Stoneacre’, a National Trust property near Maidstone, seemed too good to pass up. The usual ‘gang’ were all enthusiastic so a plan was hatched to make the 100+ mile journey from Portsmouth. News that the long-awaited Hindhead tunnel on the A3 was opening that very day added some excitement. So a dry and fair Wednesday evening found five bikers and two young pillion passengers setting off from the south coast in search of this rather unusual bike meet. With one rider bearing ‘L’ plates our route took us along the A25 – a road I’d never travelled before but one that revealed some lovely picturesque villages on the way. With more time to spare they would have made a great coffee stop. Arriving at Maidstone we found many signs for Leeds Castle but little evidence of ‘Stoneacre’. Eventually we caught sight of a rather small sign, one of those brown historic interest types, and wended our way up a very narrow road. At the end of what turned into a lane we found Stoneacre. The term ‘bike meet’ was applied rather loosely by trade description standards – we were the only ones that turned up! But that didn’t spoil the fun. Phil, the evening’s host and tenant of the house, looks after this fine property – tending the gardens with loving care and welcoming visitors with pride. He’s a proper biker too with no less than four bikes in the garage, ranging from Italian exotica, through Japanese sports machines to a rather rare Cagiva ‘elephant’. Over tea, coffee and the best bacon roll I’ve tasted in a long time we chatted bikes before enjoying a quick look round the wonderful 16th Century house and beautiful gardens. ‘National Trust’ and ‘bike meet’ might be an unusual combination – but then again our group is a little odd, too. A church based group from The Salvation Army we range from middle aged, born again bikers (in more than 30

the usual sense of the term) to youngsters starting out on their 125’s and pillions who fancy biking but can’t get started yet. The generation gap doesn’t seem to matter and it’s great for the older guys to spend time with the youngsters showing them that biking can be safe and fun; imparting some middle aged wisdom to the captive young audience at coffee stops! But isn’t that the beauty of biking – bringing together the most unlikely combinations. After months of searching to find suitable touring panniers for my KTM 990 SMT, I came across Roger Munsey who makes bespoke panniers from his unit in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire. All ARDcases are hand-built by Roger to any requested size. He 32

only uses top grade alloy plate 2.00/2.5mm thick. It is fully tigwelded so no rivets to rattle out and leak. The panniers are simple in design with completely removable lids so useful to stand a camping cooker on. All ARDcase panniers have keyed integral locks. There are four tie downs on each lid making it useful as a lashing point or handle. Bottoms have rubber feet. More importantly all cases are powder coated inside and out of the colours of your choice.

Tr ack DAY 2 everal hardy souls ventured down the night before and camped overnight but were up bright (possibly) and early (definitely) for the saturday morning After bacon baguettes, tea, registration and rider briefing the action began. The first session was dry and relatively warm but, by the second, the rain showers arrived in short bursts which continued for much of the morning. Not too much of a problem for road bikes running standard rubber, but not so clever for the track bikes on slicks. Lydden Hill has a friendly, relaxed but professional atmosphere and the South East Biker marquee was the social hub for chat, refreshments and technical tips from all the “experts” on hand. The free on track

tuition by the excellent Mario is highly useful both for those new to the fun and old hands. Make sure you request his services when down there. Well we had the full track day experience with varying conditions, thrills and spills and with a wide variety of machinery on track. As a spectator I saw for myself the efficiency of the medical staff as Debbie highsided her SV650 and received treatment both on the track and in the medical centre. Luckily only minor damage to both rider and machine, thanks in particular to R&G crash bungs! We plan to run more days next year so keep an eye on the SEB website, Facebook etc for details. Lydden Hill is a great track for both novices and seasoned veterans alike. Stick it on your to do list for next year. Many thanks to Carly and all the instructors, marshalls and medical staff for their organisation and help. n

Helm opens Minitwin championship lead

uke Helm (SDC Suzuki SV650) arrived at Snetterton 23 points adrift of MRO Minitwin championship leader Dan Couzens (Team V-Speed Suzuki SV650). However, with Couzens absent from proceedings, it gave the young rider from Preston an opportunity to over turn Couzens’ advantage ahead of the final round at Brands Hatch. Charlie King (S&S Panelcraft Suzuki SV650) continued his run of impressive form to take his first pole position. When the racing began they provided more of the close and exciting action that they have become associated with all season. Helm took victory in race one by three hundredths of a second ahead of King. Out of the Bombhole and King led the way. He held it all the way round Coram, before Helm put a hard move on him at Murrays to take the lead. The win put Helm two points ahead in the championship. It also meant he started on pole for race two, however a huge jump start saw him landed with a 10 second penalty, and, despite crossing the line first, he was relegated to eighth. The win was awarded to Cox with Russo second and King third. On Sunday King’s hard work and improved form was rewarded with his first race win. At the start of the last lap Cox led King with Helm third, before King moved up to the lead through Chapman. Helm went second down the back straight. As they rounded Coram for the last time Helm had hit the front, but King battled back, and edged the drag race to win by four hundredths of a second. Helm was second with Cox third. Rain fell for the final race, and Cox took the win by over three and a half seconds. Helm leads the championship by 40 points going to Brands Hatch for the final round. Rob McNealy (McNealy Brown BMW S1000RR) saw his MRO Powerbike championship lead cut to a single point, with just one round remaining. He led onto the last lap with MRO Stock 1000 runner Jon Waghorn (JW Smart Services BMW S1000RR) behind him. 38

Waghorn made an ambitious move for the lead at Brundle, and pushed McNealy onto the grass. He remained upright, and finished in fifth. Michael Neeves (BMW Park Lane BMW S1000RR) was third at the time of Waghorn’s move, and crossed the line second and leading Powerbike. Stock 1000 rider Dan Fowler (MG Sear Plant Hire Yamaha R1) was third, while leading Clubman was Byron Beckett (A. Williams Engineering Yamaha R1) in fourth. McNealy was close to losing the championship lead on Sunday morning. Neeves made a flying start to Sunday’s opener, while at the same time McNealy found himself down in ninth at one point. However red flags were waved after Simon Meadows (Suzuki GSXR1000) and Chris Woollett (Angears Builders Suzuki GSXR1000) crashed at Chapman and Murrays on lap two. In the rerun McNealy got away well at the front and just edged victory over Neeves by four hundredths of a second. Beckett was third and leading Clubman and Stock 1000. Neeves won the third race with McNealy crashing, the gap in the championship is just one point before Brands Hatch. Waghorn took second and was the leading Stock 1000, ahead of Fowler in third, with leading Clubman Jason Byard (May Construction Kawasaki ZXR 1000). Beckett was sixth but still heads the Stock 1000 championship. In the MRO Supersport and Stocksport 600s, BSB teammates Josh Wainwright and Jess Trayler joined in the action with the Aye Gee Suzuki team. Wainwright took all three race wins over the weekend, Saturday’s ahead of Hudson, who was the leading Clubman, and Stock runner Fuller. On Sunday Wainwright took victory from his teammate Trayler in the morning’s race, with Hudson third. Casely was again leading Supersport runner. In race two on Sunday Lewis Wright (Wheelfit Yamaha R6), put in a great performance to take second, ahead of Trayler, Wainwright again took the win. Michael Smith took three wins out of four over the weekend in the EDI Asia Formula 400s, however Steve Murphy’s win, two seconds, and third, kept him well ahead in the title hunt. Smith’s wins on Saturday came ahead of Murphy (Kawasaki ZXR400) and Welsh (Yamaha FZR400) on both occasions. His DNF Sunday morning meant Murphy raced to the win ahead of Welsh, with Colin Martin (David Simon Kawasaki ZXR400) third, however Smith returned to winning ways in the afternoon to take his third win, with Martin second and Murphy third. In the race held over from the previous meeting, Smith took the win from Welsh and Murphy. In the DFDS Seaways Yamaha Past Masters, reigning champion Michael Smith took pole, and followed that up with four race wins, clinching the 2011 title. Pete Fishwick all-but cemented second in the championship with three seconds and a fourth, while Steve King took the other second. In the race carried over from Cadwell Park, Higlett took his first ever YPM win, ahead of King and Ben Miles in awful weather conditions. In the MRO Superteens Connor Moody took the win in race one, chased across the line by Max Symonds and Oliver Fitz-Patrick, less than a second covering the three of them. Symonds took the win in race two, with Fitz-Patrick second and Moody third. On Sunday Symonds took another win, with Fitz-Patrick again second, this time with Luke Harris third. Harris took his first Superteen win in race two on Sunday, while Symonds took second ahead of Fitz-Patrick. Reigning champion Andy Saunders managed one win over the weekend in the Freshdrop 250MZs, ahead of former champion Chris Rogers, with Giles Spencer third. Rogers managed to secure two wins, both ahead of Saunders, with Spencer third on both occasions. In the final race Spencer took the win from Nick Murton-Jones and Rogers, while Saunders only managed four laps before South East Biker Magazine • www.southeastbiker.co.uk

dropping out, meaning his championship lead over Rogers going to Brands Hatch is just 14 points. It was the final round of the Rookie 1000s, and the title went to Gennaro Esposito and his Kawasaki ZXR1000, the margin of victory 17 points ahead of Tim Cripps. It was also the final round for the Rookie 600s, and with the title already sealed by Hudson, Matt Stone cemented second. The same three riders shared the podium on Saturday, Dan Helyer taking the win from Jed Angles and Stone in race one, before Angles took victory in race two ahead of Stone and Helyer. Angles, Helyer and Stone were the one, two, three on Sunday morning, but Stone ended the season on a high with a race win in the afternoon. Newly crowned BMCRC Thunderbike champion James White took victory in race one on Saturday, ahead of Matt Wildee and Sarah Jordan. In race two Rob Eyre took the win from White and Wildee. Sunday and Eyre took another race win in the morning, again from White while Jordan was on the bottom step of the podium. In the afternoon David Wass took the flag ahead of Colin Walkey and White. For the BMCRC F1 and F2 sidecars there were three dry races, before torrential rain delayed the final race of the weekend. In the dry Mick Bleakley and Heath Lane took a win and two seconds, the other two wins going to Liam Abbott and Chris Judge. Marc and Rik Vannieuwenhuyse were the leading F2 outfit in the three races. In the wet they took the overall win, while the leading F1 pairing was Kevin Cable and Guy Pawsey. Poor weather also saw one of the four BMCRC Open Class races cancelled. Jon Waghorn took all three wins. 39
