UK’s first Jet Press 720S A Warwickshire manufacturer of refuse collecting vehicles has taken receipt of the very first job to run off a Jet Press 720S in the UK. “We received the artwork at 10am – with delivery required that afternoon,” says Emmerson Press Operations Director Jamie Emmerson. “We knew immediately that on that timescale and at that sort of run length, it was a job for the Jet Press. “The customer required three versions of an A2 Poster, 50 copies of each – and they had to be of the highest quality. The Jet Press was well up to the task, as we knew it would be. The customer loved the vivid colours we were able to produce and we were thrilled with the level of quality we were able to deliver to them with such a tight turnaround.” “We’re really excited to see our new press up and running,” says Emmerson Press Sales Director John Emmerson. “Fujifilm has done an excellent job with the install and the training to get us to this point so quickly, and now we’re delighted that our customers have begun to see for themselves what we’ve already seen on visits to working Jet Press installations in Germany and the Netherlands. “The quality of work this machine is capable of, and the speed with which it delivers, has already impressed one customer – and from their feedback it’s clear it’s going to impress a lot more. Our capacity to take on new work has increased dramatically, and as a direct result we are now actively recruiting for an additional sales person to help bring that work in.” Says Keith Dalton, Director, Fujifilm UK Ltd: “We’d like to take this
opportunity to congratulate Emmerson Press as it becomes the first UK print house to take advantage of this machine’s enormous potential. This company has given itself a clear edge over its competitors, and ultimately its customers are going to be the beneficiaries. We look forward to partnering with them in growing their business over the coming months and years.” Since its founding in 1981, Emmerson Press has been at the technological forefront of the industry. Never afraid to lead the way, in the 1990s it was a digital press trailblazer, and now – having closely followed the progress of the B2 digital inkjet market in recent years, it has again decided to lead the UK digital market by investing in the Jet Press 720S. With a total global install base growing rapidly and now numbering nearly 80, Emmerson Press has joined an increasing number of print service providers across the globe who are profitably pioneering new business opportunities with the high quality, short run, on demand print the Jet Press 720S delivers so successfully. www.fujifilm.eu/eu/products/graphic-systems
Xeikon approve Hydroprint KERNOW Coatings, has announced that Xeikon has approved the use of two matt white adhesive film coatings for the Xeikon 8000 series and Xeikon 9800 machines. The certification covers Kernow’s 120 mic Hydro Print PET based media, a high stability and temperature resistant material which will not melt, scratch, shrink or deform like cheaper alternatives. Xeikon has also confirmed that the 60mic Hydro Print matt white permanent adhesive labels have been certified for use on Xeikon

The Plockmatic Group Purchase KGS srl THE Plockmatic Group, owners of UK digital finishing specialists Morgana Systems, has announced that it has completed the purchase of KGS srl. KGS has manufactured and supplied a range of PUR binders to Morgana Systems for five years. For the last two years Morgana has been the only customer of KGS, taking 100% of the company’s production, with the units being sold under the Morgana brand as the DigiBook range of PUR Binders. The KGS business was formed in 2010 by exHeidelberg employees to design and manufacture closed tank PUR binders. The innovative closed tank technology gives users the ability to manufacture small runs of books “on demand” while keeping start-up times and glue wastage to an absolute minimum. The KGS factory, located in Mestrino, Italy, will continue to manufacture the market-leading range of innovative PUR binders, capable of providing
productivity from 150 books per hour to 450 books per hour. The unique, patented technology of the machines allows PUR books to be produced quickly and easily in all print environments. The binders are simple to use and ideal for the
production of digital books in run lengths from one to thousands. In addition to the automatic operation of the binders, the automatic cleaning adds to their appeal. Commenting on the acquisition of KGS, Ray Hillhouse, VP of Sales & Marketing for Morgana, said, “We have been selling the KGS manufactured products for several years now and have seen the market grow significantly over that time. We have taken the total production from the factory for the last two years, selling PUR binding products throughout the world, and now need to increase production to meet the continually growing demand from new and expanding markets. “Owning the company will allow our expertise in supply chain and production to help KGS grow, while simultaneously reducing costs. Savings will be directly passed on to our customers and dealers.” www.plockmatic.com www.morgana.co.uk

Route One Print maximise economy and efficiency
FUJIFILM has announced that Route One Print, the web-to-print trade arm of Bluetree Design and Print in Rotherham, has invested in its Superia pre-press solution for offset printing — a portfolio of products designed to help offset printers reduce waste and boost profitability. The investment includes Brillia HD LH-PJE plates, XMF workflow, a low chemistry FLH-Z plate processor and an XR unit. “We’re a forward-thinking, technology driven company,” says Route One Print’s Brand Manager Jack Wilmott. “We recently established Route One Print as the trade printing division of our group as we saw an opportunity in the market to offer other printers and print resellers highly costeffective print that never compromises on quality. However, given the margins in the trade printing sector, we needed to ensure our operation was also running as efficiently as possible to maximise the profitability of this new web-to-print venture. That’s why we turned to the team at Fujifilm. We hadn’t worked with them before, but in our initial discussions they outlined the benefits of the Superia range and promised these would deliver what we needed to maximise productivity and minimise waste. Just a few months on, the Superia solutions have very much lived up to that early promise. Fujifilm’s service and support has also been outstanding right through the process, from them helping us to design the CTP room, to providing extended engineer support.” Route One Print’s parent company, Bluetree Design and Print Ltd, has been serving customers across the UK for over twenty years. Shortly after merging with Newcastle-based online print company Instantprint in 2012, it launched Route One Print, which in December 2015 made The Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 list after seeing revenue soar fourfold from £3.5m to £14m over three years. Following a substantial investment which has seen Route One Print move to new premises and install a range of new equipment, the company anticipates turnover will reach £30m in the next financial year, with current growth averaging 37% a quarter. It produces a wide range of print, from flyers and folded leaflets, to business cards and booklets, as well as an expanding range of banners, POS and pop-ups. These products are produced for other printers, as well as a range
of print resellers, from design professionals and agencies, to high street print and copy shops. “Over the past few years we have seen a growing demand for fast turnaround work,” Jack continues. “Whereas customers used to work to three day turnarounds, and longer in some cases, the emergence of web-to-print and general increased efficiencies across all online businesses has meant that customers now expect their orders to arrive faster. With this in mind, the big focus for us has been to streamline our processes as much as possible to meet these expectations. From a production point of view, the new presses we installed in the summer of 2015 greatly expanded our capacity, but we were soon in a position where our presses were printing faster than our pre-press was able to output plates. It was this that led us to approach Fujifilm and explore its Superia pre-press solution. “We have also recently launched a 24 hour turnaround on web-to-print jobs, so it’s vital that each department hits their deadlines to ensure the customer gets their job on time. Currently 99.6% of our jobs are dispatched on time, and we are keen to maintain that success rate as we continue to grow. Fujifilm’s Superia solution is playing an important role in this ongoing success.” Fujifilm Superia pulls together the power of Fujifilm’s extensive offset product portfolio, incorporating its XMF workflow, CTP systems, plates and pressroom chemistry, to provide a mechanism for offset printers to minimise resources, and maximise their efficiency and profitability in five core areas: Materials savings: Paper and ink are by far the most significant consumable costs in offset printing. Labour savings: By focusing on the end-to-end process, it is possible to reduce the time taken for certain processes with Superia. Energy savings: In the pre-press process Superia provides an opportunity to miminise energy usage by, for example, the adoption of Fujifilm’s process less plates. Environmental savings: Environmental savings go hand in hand with running an efficient business. With Superia, there are opportunities to minimise the discharge of chemical waste and exhaust gases. Water savings: Fujifilm’s Superia solution
presents opportunities to reduce water usage, lower costs and reduce associated drainage processing costs. At Route One Print, the benefits across all five areas are already evident. Jack explains: “First of all, we are using noticeably fewer materials, which is beneficial to the environment as well as improving our profitability. Secondly, the consistency with which the plates are being developed has reduced wastage and the time it takes to get jobs on press. And finally, the XR unit recycles the water it uses, so we estimate that chemical waste is now a mere 20 per cent of what it was previously! All this has meant we are now targeting an output of 80 plates per hour which is a significant increase on our previous output. The new plates also perform much better on the press itself, so overall the investment has made a significant difference.” Not a company to be complacent about its early success, Route One Print has a clear plan of where it is heading. “We have the capacity to not only handle output growth,” Jack continues. “But also to really start to develop our web Infrastructure at a steady rate. We currently have about a year’s worth of work briefed into our in-house development teams, which includes additional features that we are confident will add value to any print reseller — and therein lies the opportunity. We feel that there is a lot more that web-based printers can be doing going forward to really elevate the buying experience, and with Fujifilm as a partner, we now have the solid foundation upon which to do this.” www.route1print.co.uk www.fujifilm.eu/eu/products/graphic-systems

Happy 30th Birthday Kall Kwik Kentish Town WHEN former Israeli Airlines crew Tally Barash first took to the skies little did she know that one day she would own a Kall Kwik centre. Thirty years on she is celebrating 30 years of successful trading at Kall Kwik Kentish Town and to mark the occasion managing director of Kall Kwik Nigel Toplis dropped by with several bottles of champagne. In the 1980s high flying Tally was a friend of Kall Kwik founder Moshe Gerstenhaber who suggested she considered becoming one of the first woman franchisees in Kall Kwik UK. Explained Tally: “Before joining the airline I had trained as a graphic designer and wanted to return to the profession. Moshe said he thought that a Kall Kwik centre would be perfect for me — and he was absolutely right! I was thinking about a career change and although I had never thought about running a quick print company the more I looked in to it the more I could see that it could work for me.” Tally opened Kall Kwik Kentish Town in 1986 and is still trading from the same high street premises although the business has changed dramatically over the past three decades. The four strong team has come a long way since the days of lithoprint, fax bureau services and photocopying. Now the business is primarily digital print. The large majority of jobs involve large format posters and the old ground floor print room space has now been turned over to large format production. Fittingly for a woman used to travel, Kall Kwik Kentish Town has also built up a reputation for producing conference materials and ships its work to venues all over the world. Kall Kwik Kentish Town’s success is all down to keeping up with the latest trends and equipment,
building client relationships and delivering top quality service. In 2014 Kall Kwik Kentish Town centre was presented with Record Sales Award. Said Tally: “From day one I was determined that my business would be the best. I have a long serving loyal team working alongside me, Sales Director Sujit Vaghela, who has worked for the company for 20 years, digital consultant Pete Bown and Riley Matthews graphic designer with 25 years’ all share my values and together we make sure that clients receive the high level of service that we would like to receive ourselves. In my view you can’t beat doing business face to face. New technology enables us to work with people all over the world but I think our strongest and longest standing client relationships have been with the clients we meet up with on a regular basis”. Alan Cox, architect and chairman of Copped Hall Trust has been a client of Kentish Town Kall Kwik for 25 years since he began a campaign to restore the burned out Georgian mansion in Epping to its former glory. Kall Kwik has produced design,
marketing and promotional material for the trust since the early days. Said Alan: “Congratulations to Kall Kwik for providing Kentish Town with a highly professional and efficient service for 30 years. I am an architect — living and working in Kentish Town. At the same time as Kall Kwik opened thirty years ago, I started a campaign to save an important historic building and its landscape from aggressive development. This campaign was very, very difficult but eventually successful and I am still heavily involved with the project as well as my other work. Throughout this time, I have continuously relied on the ever-developing expertise of Tally and her team. Without them I could not have accomplished nearly as much. I am therefore deeply grateful to Kall Kwik who have solved all the challenges I have given them. Long may Kall Kwik continue.” Highlights of Tally’s 30 years in business have been featuring on Lord Alan Sugar’s BBC programme the Apprentice when Kall Kwik Kentish Town helped the contestants in the design challenge and seeing Kentish Town itself transforming from a tiny place on the North London map to the thriving up and coming community it is today. “We’re very fortunate that we are one of the independent businesses that can afford to be still on the high street although there’s not as much passing trade now as there was in the quick print days we still reap the benefits of being so centrally located in growing successful part of North London.’’ www.kallkwik.co.uk/kentishtown
Stanford Marsh wins STANFORD Marsh, a leading independent solutions provider for the wideformat and 3D print sectors, has announced that it has been presented with a prestigious PageWide Partner award by HP. Following the highly successful launch of HP’s PageWide wide-format printing platform, Stanford Marsh Ltd. has been named ‘Best Partner from Day One for HP PageWide XL Technology.’ The award was presented to Stanford Marsh’s Sales Director, Danny Davies, and is in recognition of the extensive pre-launch training undertaken by Stanford Marsh’s sales and service teams. The training schedule took nine months to complete and has enabled the company to support HP’s UK launch of the platform, and to offer robust Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to early adoptees of the PageWide technology. Matthew Perkins, Director at Stanford Marsh, comments: “Our teams have spent many hours learning about the HP PageWide platform. This intensive pre-launch training seems to have been well worth the investment though as our very first customer took delivery of four HP PageWide XL 8000 Printers with custom built folders to allow large output to be folded into a manageable-sized documents. Whilst at present we are unable to name them, this customer will have an estimated output exceeding an incredible four million sq/m in full colour during year one.” HP PageWide technology enables users to experience the fastest largeformat monochrome and colour printing with up to 50% savings in total production costs. It enables purchasers to grow their businesses with GIS map
and point-of-sale (POS) poster printing to generate new revenue streams. Alongside the HP PageWide XL series, Stanford Marsh’s HP portfolio also includes the very latest HP Designjet and Latex printers. www.stanfordmarsh.co.uk

Mimaki printed beagles
WHEN the Red Bull Fox Hunt mountain bike event returned to the Pentland Hills outside Edinburgh recently, the organisers were looking for something a bit different in terms of event signage, and turned to Axminster-based Creative Solutions. Operations Manager and co-director of Creative Solutions; Jedd Whittington explained; “We’ve been fortunate enough to work with Red Bull on a number of interesting projects since first being recommended over five years ago by a contact at Lyme Regis harbour where Red Bull were hosting a wakeboarding event, and we’re delighted that they continue to trust us to deliver signage and graphics for a number of major high profile events.” The Fox Hunt format has been running for several years in Northern Ireland and in 2014 Downhill World Champion Rachel Atherton decided to launch a women-only version. It pits Rachel as the Fox — against the Hounds; more than 100 female mountain bikers in a mass-start race that turns the traditional concept of a fox hunt on its head, with the Fox chasing down the pack, attempting to pass as many riders as possible before reaching the end of the course. “I thought it would be so cool if we could get more women racing.” commented Rachel. “I wanted it to be a really welcoming way to get into competing. For a lot of people, it’s the first race they’ve ever done, and that’s awesome.” Whittington takes up the story from their perspective; “One of the key requirements was to print over 40 life-sized images of a beagle dog
onto rigid PVC boards to be used as way-markers around the course, acting as a tongue-in-cheek reference to a real fox hunt. Our recently installed Mimaki JFX200-2513 LED UV flatbed printer was the perfect machine for the job, coping easily with the demand of high quality, high volume print.” The company originally started out in 1999, producing relatively simple vinyl banners from their modest premises in Lyme Regis in Dorset. The business continued to expand and develop by producing an increasingly wide range of signage, exhibition graphics and other wide format print. In 2014 they moved to new premises in Axminster, Devon, where they now undertake all design, production and assembly in-house, providing greater control over the quality of product they send out of the door, as well as better management of turnaround times. In today’s competitive markets, adding value is key to business growth, and being able to respond to customers’ print requirements with ever more diverse products means having the necessary skills and experience, but equally importantly, having the right equipment for the job.” Whittington has nothing but praise for his stable of Mimaki kit, continuing; “Since installing our first Mimaki printer in the early 2000s; a JV3, we’ve come to depend on their inherent reliability. Since then we’ve had another JV3, a JV33 and more recently a JV150-160 as well as the JFX200. The way in which technology has developed the capabilities of subsequent machines is very impressive; improved resolution and quality of output is amazing and the speed at which they
can deliver this sort of quality is breathtaking and improves both our productivity and profitability.” Whittington is also appreciative of the support he’s had from both Hybrid and their reseller; CMYuK, adding; “On the rare occasions a problem has arisen, the support from Hybrid has been superb, with the purchase and installation of the new JFX200 being handled in a highly professional manner by CMYuK, which was a huge relief as this was a significant investment for our business and a step into new territory for us.” Whittington has no doubt that their continued investment in a high quality arsenal of print and cut kit has had a major impact on their ability to retain and develop high- profile clients such as Red Bull; “A brand like Red Bull is always looking to push the creative boundaries and we work very closely with them to develop branded graphics and supporting materials which really make an impact. They demand the highest quality and very often to tight deadlines. The new equipment enables us to take on these kind of commissions with real confidence.” The 2015 Red Bull Fox Hunt proved to be a real success, with the event sold out in hours, and it’s easy to see why; the atmosphere at the weekend event is renowned for being fun, friendly and inclusive, with first-time racers as welcome as seasoned riders. No doubt Creative Solutions can take genuine pride in having played their part in such an exciting and successful event, as well as looking forward to the next. www.creative-solutions-direct.co.uk www.hybridservices.co.uk

Develop ineo 1100 production print system DSALES the UK distributor for the Develop range of multifunctional document imaging systems, has launched the Develop ineo 1100 digital production print system. With a maximum monthly output volume of 2.25 million sheets, the ineo 1100 is ideally equipped to handle the mono production printing demands of printrooms, digital print providers and other high-volume printing environments. The flexible ineo 1100 offers 100 ppm output speed, with the added advantage of a colour scanner, which scans documents in a single-path duplex operation at up to 180 ipm. Quality is not sacrificed for speed — a genuine resolution of 1,200 x 1,200 dpi, advanced screening technology and customised professional-quality tone curve and screening adjustments (based on an upgraded tone curve utility) ensure outstanding output quality. With a maximum paper capacity of 9,000 sheets in five cassettes and a newly developed bypass tray where 250 sheets can be inserted, the ineo 1100 is well equipped for any high-volume print job, and even extensive mixed-media jobs can be handled easily. The ineo 1100 can feed substrate weights from 40 to 300gsm (optionally up to 350gsm) and sheet sizes from 92 by 132 mm to SRA3 (324 by 483 mm). This enables the versatile ineo 1100 to process just about any job a digital print operation is likely to require. A range of professional finishing options is also available. Production of up to 100-page booklets with automatic ring binding; two point and choice-of-
corner stapling for up to 100 sheets; two or four hole punching (also for post-inserted documents); Z-folding for inclusion of A3 documents in A4 printouts; letter folding for up to three pages; and a newly developed output tray for offline finishing or where no finisher is needed. The optional GBC punch unit comes with a wide range of die sets to ensure compatibility with most popular punching schemes, for example metal-based (wire) or plastic (comb) binding. The ineo 1100 is the first digital production press from Develop to support Konica Minolta’s OpenAPI technology, which allows developers to create applications that communicate with this production system. As a result, customers can use third-party accounting, authentication or scanrouting applications, such as YSoft SafeQ or Nuance eCopy Sharescan, in combination with this printer. Commenting on the launch of the Develop ineo 1100, Jonathan Whitworth, Managing Director of DSales (UK) stated, “As the majority of high-volume jobs in this segment are still printed in black and white, the ineo 1100 is a valuable addition to the Develop production print range. Although fast, versatile and powerful, the ineo 1100 is compact and will fit easily into inhouse CRD printrooms or pay-for-print environments. The ineo 1100’s high productivity ensures short turnaround times, when tackling time-critical print jobs, with all features controlled via an easy-to-operate touchscreen.” www.dsales.eu
New Duplo 600 Pro Digital Booklet System DUPLO has reinforced its top slot in booklet making and saddle stitching with the launch of a new model equipped with greater sheet feeding capacity: the 600 PRO Digital Booklet System. The system is ideal for commercial printers where high-volume digital and litho print production require robust and productive finishing solutions. The Duplo 600 PRO Digital Booklet System is a fully automated stitching, folding and trimming solution based on the easy-to-use DBM-600 booklet maker. However, unlike the standard 600 Digital Booklet System, which includes the DSF2200 sheet feeder, the 600 PRO uses the DSF-6000 sheet feeder, which has three times the capacity of the DSF-2200. Unveiled at Duplo’s London Calling in November, the DSF-6000 works super-efficiently with the highest speed digital print systems from all the main machine manufacturers. In February 2016, the DSF-6000 was also unveiled as part of the iSaddle PRO saddle stitching system. Additional major benefits of the Duplo 600 PRO Booklet System include:• Industry-exclusive features such as A4 landscape format • Easy set-up and full automated precision; user friendly with minimal operator intervention required • Clear paper path so full control of the production process
• Optimised PC controller that enables operators to create and save an unlimited number of jobs for future instant recall • Production speeds of up to 5,200 booklets per hour. Adding the optional DKT-200 2-knife trimmer increases this to up to 9,000 booklets per hour • This knife trimming allows the user to take printed SRA3 or B3 sheets directly from the press and finish the booklet in one operation • Tool-less operations and job changeover times of less than a minute • High versatility and modular set-up that can be re-configured and expanded as demands change Peter Jolly, Duplo UK Managing Director, said: “High volume print environments have their own
special requirements from their post-press department, and the 600 PRO booklet system gives them the muscle power to keep finishing on pace with printing. “This is another example of Duplo’s commitment to developing cutting edge technology solutions, tailored to our customers’ needs. Duplo has the widest range of booklet makers and saddle stitchers in the industry, all built around our unique vision of automated precision, and the 600 PRO extends our leadership further.” www.duplouk.com

New Finishing on Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press PRINT providers can easily print, perforate, cut and stack a job all in one run with two new inline finishing options on the Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press. With an inline dynamic perforator and a second high capacity stacker, print shops can maximise press availability and expand into new high value application segments. The inline dynamic perforation option enables the creation of horizontal, vertical or t-section tear offs — such as coupons, reply cards and payment stubs — opening up new opportunities in the transactional/promotional and direct mail markets. Additionally, a second high capacity
stacker enables a continuous operation feature so print providers can keep presses running while unloading the other stacker. “The Rialto 900 packs a lot of performance in a small footprint,” said Chris Irick, worldwide product marketing manager, Entry Production Inkjet,
Xerox. “The new inline finishing options maximise productivity by automating the workflow and reducing manual labour.” The inline dynamic perforator and stacker configuration with the continuous operation feature will be on display at drupa on the Xerox stand at Hall 8B A62. Xerox’s cloud-enabled automated colour management solution will also be supporting the press, showcasing how print providers can simplify workflow and colour management. Availability for the two new finishing features will be announced later this year. www.xerox.com/drupa
First EFI Reggiani PRO 340 Textile Printer CESTRIAN Imaging Ltd has become the first printing company in the UK to install a fully loaded EFI Reggiani PRO 340 digital textile printer. The new 340 cm-wide device will meet increasing demand for high-quality fabric-printed displays, branded apparel and more. The printer, which has 16 ink channels, will enable Cestrian Imaging to grow its business even faster as it capitalises on growing opportunities, such as the trend for printing larger designs onto large-format rolls of textile. The Cheadle, UK-based company’s customers love the flexibility of fabrics, the unparalleled vibrancy of the colours and the ecological benefits that come from being able to reuse rain-proof branded fabrics. “With the EFI Reggiani PRO 340, we can offer even more customised work, spectacularly coloured and complex print designs,” said Paul Gibson, Cestrian’s Production Director. “This printer will allow us to deliver just in time designs for freestanding fabric walls, light boxes and other fabric displays.” With its 16 heads, eight colours, drop sizes from 4 to 72 picolitres and resolutions up to 2400 dpi, the EFI Reggiani PRO knows few limits, and Cestrian can reliably use it to achieve photo-quality imaging. The printer also provides exceptional, accurate and consistent fabric handling thanks to a “sticky belt” industrial feeding feature that can handle everything from stretch fabric to stiff papers consistently and reliably at high rates of speed. The printer’s 340 cm width guarantees greater variety in terms of size or repeat, while its specified fabric weights from 30 to 450 gr/sqm lets Cestrian achieve high throughput of up to 800 sqm/hour on a range of textiles that includes polyester, cotton, cotton-linen, polyamide, viscose and even wool. “We are also excited about the EFI Reggiani PRO’s fluorescent ink capabilities. These inks produce bright colours beyond the range reproducible
by process colour printing, while the availability of 16 ink channels guarantees smooth gradations,” said Gibson. Fluorescent inks are popular for eyecatching, intensely vivid soft signage. For example, fluorescent pink and yellow deliver bright neon colours that are not seen in graphics produced using normal ink sets. Cestrian’s new printer is versatile in the types of inks it runs as well. The company can use any kind of process colour inks it deems necessary in its new EFI Reggiani printer, including disperse direct, reactive, acid, disperse sublimation, and textile pigment. In addition, the new machine will allow Cestrian to reap other benefits from Reggiani technology. EFI Reggiani printers are very eco-friendly, as they can run water-based inks with little to no odour, and they have low power consumption “We also look forward to our customers saving on shipping,” added Gibson, citing the fact that fabric-printed display signage pieces are lightweight and fold up easily, reducing the energy and costs need for freight. EFI Reggiani printers also offer increased sustainability because they produce high-quality printed textiles while using less ink. The printers’ ink recovery system is especially beneficial in the
amount of savings it can create for customers. Employing more than 80 people, Cestrian’s aim is to bring brand communications to life, from design to production. The company is an industry leader in visual brand communications and printing for retail point-of-sale signage. The diversity of Cestrian’s stateof-the-art equipment - which includes the new EFI Reggiani printer and a pair of 3.2-metre EFI VUTEk inkjet presses the company installed late last year - gives Cestrian the ability to deliver successful projects, no matter the complexity or scale. Cestrian is also a long-time user of EFI DirectSmile software, which the company uses to develop personalised marketing materials and help multi-channel direct marketing clients synchronise print, URLs, email and SMS whilst tracking response rates. “Our partnership with Cestrian Imaging reflects how important it is for EFI to provide technologies that can fuel greater success in a wide range of print signage and marketing applications,” said Paul Cripps, regional vice president of sales for EFI. “After helping the company successfully expand its signage and graphics capabilities with a pair of high-speed EFI VUTEk inkjet presses, we are happy to see the company continue its remarkable expansion with an EFI Reggiani PRO printer to address the rapidly expanding textile imaging market.” EFI Reggiani products are designed and manufactured to the highest standards and to simplify textile production across a wide range of industries. EFI’s complete printer portfolio, which also features industry-leading LED and UV inkjet narrow, wide, and super wide format and ceramic decoration technologies, gives customers profitable opportunities for “Imaging of Things,” delivering greater product customisation and appeal in everything from signage and packaging to décor, apparel and industrial manufacturing. www.efi.com

Heidelberg is on fire for digital AT drupa in Dusseldorf, Germany, from 31 May to 10 June it will show a Primefire B1 inkjet press jointly developed with Fujifilm as well as an Omnifire 250 formerly Jetpress Dimension 4D press, Labelfire which is the recently launched Gallus DCS 340 and Versafire CP and CV formerly Linoprint technology. Heidelberg is exhibiting a ‘Simply Smart’ future in Hall 1 at Drupa where digital will be a key topic in the Smart Printshop. “We will take our industry into a new digital era by stepping up our investment in the digital and services growth segments. Our customers expect us to deliver added value and enhanced business opportunities, and we are actively helping them make the transformation to a digitised future,” says Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach. The Primefire offers a high quality, industrial level solution that is expected to turn heads in the packaging market particularly but also in commercial sectors for items like calendars and posters. Heidelberg emphasises it is not only launching machines but a holistic approach to digital production. Its Prinect modular and integrated workflows have transformed efficiency in offset but with digital, where runs are shorter and personalisation is possible, data control and slick set up times as well as the business information feedback becomes still more critical. Primefire 106 took just over 15 months and intensive expert exchange between R&D and engineering teams in Japan and Germany to come to fruition. Testing in-house continues and the press will then be field tested at a packaging
company in Germany and elsewhere before coming to market in 2017. Combining the inkjet know-how of Fujifilm with the application expertise of Heidelberg, the Primefire 106 can handle short runs and personalisation including bar codes, QR codes and numbering. The Preset Plus Feeder is adopted from the Speedmaster XL 106 technology. There is a conditioning unit prior to printing which coagulates the ink to get a more defined dot at speed. The water-based ink applied by the 1200 x 1200 dpi seven-colour inkjet unit is food safe. After printing, two more units dry and coat (full or spot) before reaching the Preset Plus Delivery. Heidelberg stresses the importance of the sheet control within the press and the colour and workflow capability provided by Heidelberg’s Digital Front End which will drive the press. By using Multicolour technology (the four process colours plus green, orange and violet) Heidelberg says it can provide high quality print and an even greater colour gamut than is possible with offset.
It can print on substrates up to 0.6mm. Heidelberg engineers will service this equipment in the field and the inks will be sold as part of the Saphira consumables range. The Omnifire 4D range, for printing directly onto objects, is being significantly extended. The Omnifire 250 has been adopted by a novel retailer called My Muesli which sells bespoke breakfast cereals and which can now offer it in tubes featuring a customer’s chosen picture on demand. The press is run at the Heidelberg city store by a 20 year old with no printing experience. The Omnifire 1000 will be launched at the end of this year to handle objects up to 1,000mm and uses six axes robotics to enable every side of an object to be printed. It uses highly robust inkjet print heads to print four colours and opaque white plus a protective coating. It has been designed with a modular mounting systems for a very fast changeover between jobs and it can personalise on demand. Printed objects produced on the Omnifire 1000 will be displayed throughout the show.
Vivid announce huge cost-saving products VIVID Laminating Technologies will introduce two new additions to its Matrix range at drupa, alongside a new wide format foiling laminator and a range of special effect foils.
MATRIX AUTO-FEEDER The new Auto-Feeder can be fitted to the Matrix Laminating Systems and frees up operators to complete other jobs quickly and efficiently. With the Auto-Feeder the Matrix gives customers an even greater return on their investment. Prints can be loaded ‘on the run’ for non-stop operation.
HIGH-SPEED MATRIX The award-winning Matrix Laminators will also see a new high-speed model added to the range, allowing larger volume runs to be laminated faster and saving on production costs by finishing in-house. The new system runs at up to 20m a minute and will also be fully compatible with the new Auto-Feeder.
BOSS SPECIAL EFFECT FOILS, METALLISED PRINT AND SPOT UV FILM Vivid’s NEW Boss Premium Foil range allows metallised effects to be added to prints. The foiling and overprintable coloured foils work by combining the Matrix and a digital printer. Detailed, quality foiling prints can be created in-house, without expensive set-up charges and traditional block foiling, which represents a fraction of the cost compared to outsourcing. Vivid is adding to their Boss print effect range, with holographic films. This opens many new avenues of income for Matrix users, including security print, vouchers, personalised items and tickets, as well as the packaging and label markets.
The Matrix is a cost-effective digital laminator and is a far more valuable must-have system for the modern day digital printer. With lamination, foiling, Spot UV and new metallised print effects, four separate avenues of income make the Matrix a real option to produce incredible finishes, adding even more value to print jobs.
EASYMOUNT The Easymount Air will also see a new model launched at the Düsseldorf show. The Easymount AirFoil features independent pneumatic rollers, allowing it to foil and add spot UV-style effects to wide format prints, foam boards, glass and MDF. Metallised effects open up new markets for wide format printers. These can be overprinted onto UV or solventbased prints. Customers working in the point-ofsale, packaging and decorative markets will benefit by saving money every time they create a large format product. Visit the Vivid team in Hall 6 to see some of the most advanced, innovative and cost-effective laminating technologies on the planet. www.vivid-online.com

Morgana Launch Next Generation DigiFold Pro and AutoCreaser Pro MORGANA Systems has announced it will launch the next generation DigiFold Pro and AutoCreaser Pro at this year’s drupa. The new machines will take centre stage alongside new additions to the company’s bookletmaking systems, and a raft of upgrades to its successful DigiBook range of PUR perfect binders. Commenting on the new DigiFold Pro 385, Ray Hillhouse, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, said: “The DigiFold has long been the benchmark product in the creaser/folder sector. With the improvements in speed and productivity for the current crop of digital print engines, Morgana needs to provide an additional option for our customers. After surveying our DigiFold users, we’ve been able to address what they need as their digital production grows.” One of the key changes from previous DigiFold models is the introduction of a high-capacity vacuum top-feeder that can take a sheet pile of up to 450mm. Once the size and thickness of stock are entered, all other feeder functions including air and vacuum settings, side guide positions, and fold roller gaps are automatically adjusted for quick and easy setup of jobs. Stock of up to
0.4mm can be creased and folded with virtually no cracking of the sheets or the toner on them. Another new feature is the dual creasing blades, the Morgana DynaCrease, for creasing and folding applications at over 6,000 sheets per hour, and one for “creasing only mode” which allows the widest range of applications to be produced on one machine. Ray Hillhouse added: “The new Pro 385 model will top the DigiFold range providing a heavy-duty machine for longer run applications of both digitally and litho printed work – it’s exactly what our larger customers have been asking for.” In addition to the new DigiFold Pro, the AutoCreaser Pro 385 will also be shown, similarly benefiting from the new high-capacity feeder. Hillhouse continued: “The AutoCreaser is still our best-selling machine and the new Pro 385 will take us into higher volume applications with a
heavier duty machine.” As well as the new feeder, this version of the AutoCreaser will have a dual creasing blade and matrix, which is particularly useful if producing covers for perfect binding where the spine and hinge creases can be produced in one pass, or for those users who wish to change creasing profiles regularly. The new AutoCreaser Pro 385 can run at up to 8,500 sheets per hour. www.morgana.co.uk

Epson show new super-fast 44-inch LFP EPSON is unveiling the new 44-inch (111.8cm) addition to the SureColor SC-P series; the SCP10000. It follows in the footsteps of the recently launched 64-inch (162.6cm) SC-P20000. Both innovative models are easy-to-operate and produce accurate, superior-quality, large-format photos, POS items and signage — even at super-fast speeds. Customers can now benefit from all of the features from the range, but now with a smaller footprint. The SC-P10000 is an optimal solution for photo labs, and copy shops, print production houses and corporates looking for an in-house solution. In these highly demanding scenarios, users need a printer which yields prints of the highest quality and delivers exceptional productivity — at 600x600 and higher. As such, the SC P10000 incorporates the new PrecisionCore MicroTFP printhead to produce outstanding results, even in fast print modes. Users can be assured of its smooth operation with its high-precision media feed technology, including a newly developed camera-based paper feed stabiliser and media inductive roller system. Marc Boehmer, Product Manager, Epson Europe
said: “We’re really excited to unveil at drupa our new 44inch model. It’s ideal for high volume copy shops that need to print at superfast speeds — without compromising on quality. Our customers’ needs continue to evolve and so it’s essential for us to expand our portfolio and technologies to fulfil their requirements.” Accurate colours, smooth gradation and fine detail set superior prints apart. Epson ensures its customers can be competitive and deliver precise and reliable results on all of these fronts with its new UltraChrome Pro 10-colour ink-set. The new high density Photo and Matte Black inks and four levels of black combine to provide a rich and excellent tonal range in reproduction. Furthermore, reduced graininess and improved gradation is achievable with the K4 and Multi Size Droplet Technology (MSDT). Fuss-free printing is also made possible with the SC-P10000. Operating the printer is easy
with the large colour LCD Panel, which guides the user with illustrations. Changing and switching media is quick and effortless, plus the transparent printer cover window and roll cover window allow users to check the status of printing and remaining media. The optional HDD also allows jobs to be reprinted directly from the printer panel, without the need for a PC. Maintenance is also made easy so that users can be self-reliant and reduce their costs. After printing, the position of the printhead means that it can be cleaned by the user, along with the ink cap. In addition, users can manage the colour stability of their printers without the need for expensive add-ons with the Epson Colour Calibration utility. Epson ensures its printers and inks are highly economical, as efficiency is always a concern for any business. An optional Adobe post script module can be used with the SC-P10000 to further increase the user’s efficiency and workflow.

Putting perspective on the pixel
Digital versus film. It may seem like an academic topic given the universal usage of electronic imaging in all its many forms. But Martin Christie says it is relevant for the print shop for several reasons and an understanding of the differences is a knowledge worth reviewing.
M
ANY COLLEGES AND universities still teach the use of film as part of a photography course, and not just for the historic context. Understanding how light is recorded, in whatever format, is an essential part of the process, and a keen eye is better trained without the aid of a digital prompt. Several photographers and filmmakers have reverted to film, not just for nostalgia reasons, but to regain some of the feel and authenticity of traditional imaging, rather than the artificial aspect of computer generated pictures. And then there are those who just love film, and would rather eat worms than be corrupted with anything as coarse as a pixel. While I wouldn’t take sides with the latter, I do have some sympathy with the former arguments. It was several conversations with photographers who have only known digital that prompted me to dig out my old film camera and conduct a notvery-scientific comparison, but one that may shed some useful light on the issue. One of the interesting points raised was how we managed in ancient times to work without all the electronic aids to focus, exposure not to mention image preview and post view. Well, of course, the answer is that you had to be quite good, at least if you wanted to earn a living at it. You also had to make shots count, because you didn’t have the luxury of shooting away endlessly in the expectation that some might be useable. Film did teach a discipline which I think has been largely lost. The bonus of course is the convenience and speed of digital, plus the possibilities of image manipulation, and post production enhancement which are now in the hands, or rather at the fingertips, of the individual photographer.
Previously they could only be handled by specialist reproduction houses, and thus an expensive and lengthy procedure. No one would expect lead in times of days today, when even hours are considered unacceptable. Not many people may be shooting film these days, but there is still a lot of it around. After a hundred and fifty years, there is a massive archive of prints and negatives that previously were all the records of people’s lives, adventures and anniversaries. While most people’s camera was often only brought out several times a year for special events, that still adds up to quite a collection. And while more photographs are probably taken now in a day than in a decade previously, it still adds up to a sizeable amount. In order to share that archive socially or professionally, those images have to be scanned and turned into digital files, and this is where the service of the digital bureau comes in, and why an understanding of film essentials is important. It’s quite ironic that those purists who advocate a film only diet still have to resort to digital techniques in order to share their output on the internet. So ultimately the pixel is the common currency. With film, when enlargements were made, it was often the amount of grain — the gaps in the tonal range of the negatives — that determined the ultimate quality of the printed image. The larger the print, the more the grain would be obvious. In some ways, the pixel count is very similar. Without sufficient digital information, there is a limit to which any particular image can be enlarged, and there is a lot of misunderstanding about this, because other factors also affect the result. As well as resolution, the number of pixels, there is sharpness and clarity, as well as colour
information to be recorded. With film, it was pretty clear cut, negatives were a standard size, and you could see by eye whether the image was sharp, or the tones bleached out, long before putting it in an enlarger. Viewing a digital image on a screen is deceptive unless you look at the digital information that is stored with it. That means using a photo editing software program like Adobe’s Photoshop or Lightroom, to give you the bare facts. That basic preparation was taken as given in early days of digital, but increasingly when people are now using phone apps and tablets, digital images are coming in all shapes and sizes, with consequent variation in quality. What a phone may consider a high resolution will not be the same for a printer, but it may be suitable if it is sufficiently sharp and well lit. And these are factors which really underline the difference between digital and film. With film, if a picture was badly shot, it generally didn’t come out at all. With electronic filters on a phone, a terrible image may look great, but there isn’t a lot of depth to it in real terms. Any photographer worth his salt knows that a print is the real test of an image’s quality. Modern inkjet prints struggle to match traditional photo prints because the pigment inks lie on the surface of the media, rather than be saturated within it. It’s the latter that gives a real photo print its depth, barely noticed on small ones, but more obvious on enlargements. However, after a decade and more of digital, few people expect a photo quality print to have the look and feel of a traditional print, so it’s mostly the purists that will query it. Certainly most of the remaining photo processing specialist stores have moved to the more environmentally friendly dry labs using inkjet technology.

It was to one of those, one of the few remaining ones in Brighton, that we went with our film in the back to back comparison (previewed last month) to trial the difference between film and a comparative digital camera, and the results were interesting. The contenders were my dear old (about 30 years) Nikon FM2 and my nearly new Nikon D3200 — a 35mm film camera versus a 24 Megapixel digital. I took them out for a stroll together on a sunny Sunday at the seaside when a lot of crazies were running a marathon. With the digital I shot RAW files to give the best quality in the 6000x4000 pixel resolution, and rated at 200 ASA, the same as the roll of Fujifilm colour in the film camera. The digital camera has a number of preset modes, as well as manual, to cover subjects that may vary in speed and distance, like most of its breed, and I used several to get a good comparison. The FM is just manual so the photographer has to do most of the work, apart from a very basic but pretty accurate light meter which uses just a tiny bit of battery power. I mention the accuracy because although I’m a little rusty with my old camera, I soon got the feel back, and it proved very consistent overall considering lighting conditions, being bright sunlight, are not always ideal, with strong shadows and often bursts of strong light. The resulting prints, to my satisfaction were pretty good. The digital camera proved less consistent in the same conditions, due to letting the camera decide what settings to use. This was a fair choice, considering the sophisticated spec of the camera, and it’s what most average camera users do nowadays — leave it on automatic settings. Of course, exposure differences can now be adjusted easily in Photoshop, so it’s not a great problem, but it does underline how the electronic aids encourage laziness. Even if you have the option to override the auto you may not bother. Most surprisingly, the images of the moving runners were much sharper overall on film, than they were with the digital, partly caused by the variety of focus points now available to the user. With the manual camera, you just had one option — chose a point, focus on it and snap. Of course with the digital you could shoot all day with the chance that at least a few images would be pin sharp. With film you only have 36 chances so you tend to make them count. Testing in the studio with still objects, and continuous lighting, the digital proved far more consistent, and this is where the strength of the format shows up. Having shot a lot of product before on film, the nightmare was always getting colour accuracy where that was seen as critical. With digital obviously you can see what you have just done, and adjust accordingly.
vivid-online.com
Here, however, is where the professional has to take control and switches to manual, most importantly being able to input a correct white balance for colour performance. Otherwise some tonal differences may be very difficult to determine in post production. Film tends to be more lenient because of the way in captures reflected light more gradually rather than a pixel which must determine the actual colour between one shade or another. At the end of the day, both are a compromise, so you cannot say one is better than the other, just that they do things in different ways. What was significant was that while with the film you get a CD of scanned images along with the prints and the negatives from the mini lab, the actual scans, even ‘high resolution’ are only
3000x2000 pixels — half that of the digital camera output images. This is a standard as the files are not intended for prints much larger than the regular output. Using my own Epson film scanner I was able to achieve a much higher resolution to give a much fairer comparison between the two, and again, the judgement is evenly balanced. Ultimately you are committing the image to a digital version with the pixel compromise that entails, rather than the optical projection for which it was intended. Film or digital, I’m sure the debate will continue, and I certainly didn’t expect to resolve it one way or the other. A proper understanding of imaging is important either way. That and the fact that a good scanning service, film or print, is always going to be an important part of the digital bureau.

PEFC UK Annual Stakeholder Day THE Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC UK), has announced that its Annual Stakeholder Day will take place in London on Tuesday 5th July. This year’s theme will be Market Drivers for Certified Products with speakers highlighting the marketbased initiatives that are driving demand for certified products, sustainable forest management and the global role PEFC plays in developing certified forests. The keynote speaker will be Ignacio Gavilan, Director of Sustainability for the influential global industry group, the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF). The CGF brings together more than 400 retailers, manufacturers and service providers, including major brands such as Coca Cola, Johnson & Johnson, Kellogg’s, L’Oreal, Nestle, P&G, Tesco and Asda-WalMart. Gavilan leads the CGF’s Sustainability team, which aims to position the consumer goods industry as a leader in protection against climate change and reducing waste. He will speak on: ‘Zero Net Deforestation by 2020’, and the importance of sourcing pulp, paper and packaging responsibly. CGF recognises the role that forest certification schemes such as PEFC’s can play in providing companies with verification of legality and providing a low risk of controversial sources. Other speakers will include Martyn White of the John Lewis Partnership, who will provide a retail perspective on managing risk and enhancing brand value through responsible sourcing plus Steve Cook of Willmott Dixon, who will highlight what the UK construction sector is doing to ensure the timber it sources comes from well-managed forests. Riikka Joukio of Metsäboard and the WBCSD Forest Solutions Group, will urge the packaging sector and its customers to actively support sustainable forest management certification. PEFC International’s Sarah Price will complete the speaker line up, delivering an update on PEFC’s work to grow certified forests to meet customer demand. The afternoon will conclude with a Q&A discussion session followed by a networking drinks reception. PEFC UK Chairman, Ross Bradshaw said: “More and more companies from SMEs to global brands are keen to demonstrate that the forest products they use come from certified sustainable sources. Consumers are increasingly conscious of the impact of their purchasing decisions and we hope those joining us for this year’s stakeholder event will gain a better understanding of the role market-based initiatives play in helping to secure a healthy future for the world’s forests.” The event will be sponsored by AB Group Packaging and leading certification body CATG (Certification & Timber Grading). AB Group Managing Director, Dermot Brady commented: “We are proud to partner once again with the world’s largest forest certification programme. As a company we are committed to using certified materials for the carrier bags we produce for high street retailers and recognise the assurances a certification label such as PEFC’s brings.” Glen Sharples, Managing Director of CATG, added: “CATG is delighted to support this important event. As one of the UK’s leading certification bodies providing Chain of Custody certification services for those trading in forest products, our clients understand that being able to provide assurances of responsible sourcing is vital to their customers.” www.pefc.co.uk/news-publications/events/pefc-stakeholder-events

Antalis launch ‘Carefully Curated’ initiative
Brands of Office Papers ANTALIS are supporting one of the 20th Century’s greatest British photographers, Don McCullin, in realising a three-volume limited edition retrospective of his life’s work – Irreconcilable Truths. Inspired by this, Antalis has launched ‘Carefully Curated’, an initiative that highlights the importance of selecting the right paper in realising highquality, high-profile printed output. In collaboration with acclaimed war and reportage photographer Don McCullin, the Antalis ‘Carefully Curated’ initiative combines the introduction of a range of some of the finest quality papers for litho and digital reproduction and the importance of selecting the right paper to create the best possible printed product — in this case, the selection of Cocoon Recycled by Don McCullin for the production of Irreconcilable Truths. The campaign also includes the launch of a photographic-based competition entitled ‘These Feet In Ancient Times’. Open to anyone working in the design or print industries, the competition, which will be judged with Mr McCullin, encourages photographers and enthusiasts to submit their photographs via www.antaliscarefullycurated.com. Entrants will be in with a chance of receiving a printed portfolio of their work and also signed copies of Don McCullin’s Irreconcilable Truths three-volume collection. The first ‘Carefully Curated’ portfolio of selected papers comprises a versatile mix of papers for litho and digital printing including Cocoon, a full range of recycled papers offering both coated and uncoated options, and an unusual level of high whiteness, which is unique within the recycled paper market. Also included in the carefully curated portfolio is Mohawk superfine, one of the finest printing papers delivering incredible quality, consistency and uniformity. Commenting on the production of his life’s work, which is being printed to the highest standards at Opal Printing Ltd in Midsomer Norton, near Bath, Don McCullin said, “Preparing to realise Irreconcilable Truths has been a two-year process of reviewing the whole of my archive and curating almost 700 images that I consider to be the portfolio that defines the entirety of my career. Having published almost 30 books, this time I was dedicated to ensuring that what was possible with litho printing could match as closely as possible what I was achieving in my own darkroom.” Regarding paper selection, Mr McCullin was clear that the qualities of the paper required would be a determining factor in the overall quality and presentation of his photography. Mr McCullin continues, “The final decision was straightforward; Antalis’s Cocoon Recycled paper for the reproduction of images in Irreconcilable Truths, and Mohawk Superfine stock for the digital reproduction of accompanying monographs – including the first ever printing of a selection of my colour photography.” Commenting on their association with Don McCullin, Mike Bennett, Marketing Manager, Print, Sign & Display at Antalis says, “We are extremely proud that our papers have been selected by Mr McCullin for such an important and personal production highlighting some of the most significant photographs of his life’s work. It was this care and precision in his selection of materials and his meticulous attention to detail in the production of Irreconcilable Truths that was the inspiration behind the launch of our Carefully Curated initiative www.antaliscarefullycurated.com www.antalis.co.uk

Profit engraved on my mind TURN £500 of blank promotional stock into a fully paid for, circa £2500, Roland impact printer from Rayner’s. How? You may well ask. And leading by example we are proving that by upgrading some of the souvenir, prize and present products we produce in-house, to a personalised engraved gift, that our customers delight will keep them loyal to our printing service for many a year to come. Attracting new business is a must these days just to top up for any customers falling off the other end. New products secure extra business for your traditional services too, as well as securing your existing user base. So looking for something new, Maureen and I met Louisa Burrows at a recent local Newtech exhibition. We watched a speedy demonstration

of personalising a screened photo onto a polished metal keyring. The outstanding quality secures a mark up from a blank £2 to a unique one off gift of £10. Yes proper profit from minimum outlay in stock. Now as we go to print the kit is just arriving along with our first batch of shiny metal blanks. We have asked our customers to help choose our initial start up items and shown them samples of the quality, which has resulted in several pre-orders. One being to design a coat of arms for a Scottish dancing group to engrave onto a hip flask. All very classy including our toast to turning a wee £7 into £35. Do drop in when next in Brighton for a demonstration from our counter machine set to entertain our walk in customers. Much more on this next month, in the meantime please contact Louisa at Rayner’s for brochures pricing etc. and do ask for the very special QPP pricing that could secure you a ROI in a remarkably short time. www.KPRayner.co.uk
Opportunity knocks with another tournament to get all dressed up for. Banners to be made for events and flags to show our allegiance. Any excuse for a print promotion, flyers for special deals and prizes for winners. Prime your sales team and get out in the field; it’s just the weather for a bit of canvassing! Why not hand out some fixture wall charts?

Profit in Thank You Notes THIS is a polite reminder to say thank you and set a trend for our customers to get all viral about. Do you remember the days when we thanked customers and they thanked us? Thanking was in fashion and although not obligatory was certainly the done thing. Firstly we must thank our friends at Paper Innovation for producing a sample pack for every quick print business in the UK, and some a touch further afield too. We have commissioned our own supply of thank you notes to give to our shop customers as, yes you’ve got it, a small thank you in appreciation of their business. We personalise the top copy, with a marker pen or the like with a message of thanks for their custom. In turn with the rest of the pad, our customers can thank their own customers, suppliers, family and friends with their own personalised thank you note and then share a photo on social media. We have received a ‘thanks for the artwork,’ ‘staying late one night’ and ‘Your Patience’. Some of the best examples posted on our message board in our shop’s reception are really personal. ‘Thanks for being you’, how sweet. ‘A sunny day’, ‘Fish n Chips’ ‘CATS’ ‘our trip to Wembley’ There is nothing so rewarding as setting a trend and spreading good manners. I’m thankful for all you QPP readers, sponsors and work colleagues xxx Truly I am. Especially Steve and Lauren at Print Innovation, for without them this good spirit could not be spread. Thanks too for the QPP special readers offer price for each shop to order their own batch of thank you notes. 25 sheet pads, 400 @25p each, 800 @ 22p each, 1200 @20p each, 1600 @18p and 2000 @15p. Ask becky@colourfast.co.uk for the artwork template to change to your shop name. www.paperinnovation.co.uk
Customers create their own Print on tables Promotional Products
FOR print professionals looking to expand their offering without spending money or holding stock, No-Minimum Bespoke is an exciting solution. Print pros can get a free eCommerce site which they can customise with their own branding and use to sell low quantity orders of printed and engraved promotional products with no additional outlay or effort. One of the key features of No-Minimum Bespoke sites is a comprehensive yet easy to use artwork tool. The artwork tool is ideal for your customers who don’t have print-ready artwork — it allows them to create a design on a promotional product online. Your customers can view the available print area and start customising their item using an intuitive interface. They can upload artwork from their computer, or a picture from social media and file-sharing sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox and Google Drive. Alternatively, your customer can search a huge library of royalty-free images to find something that suits their brand or message. Text can also be added in a wide choice of fonts and colours, then resized and repositioned, all while a real-time proof shows the customer how their created design will print on their product, whether it’s a pen, mug, bag or item of clothing. All orders are created and fulfilled using the automated online ordering system with no intervention from the print pro themselves. Products are shipped directly to your customer in plain packaging and the gross profit deposited in your bank account. The benefit of No-Minimum Bespoke for print professionals is that they can sell printed promotional products as an additional offering to complement their core business and attract customers who might be put off by minimum order quantities. Contact support@no-minimum.co.uk to find out how you can get a free No-Minimum Bespoke eCommerce site. View a tutorial of the artwork tool at http:/ow.ly/10zdYB
PAPERGRAPHICS is continuing to drive innovation in the growing interiors market, by launching its new digidécor creatable Table Covers. Developed to help service providers explore new creative opportunities, this digitally printable table covering is ideal for both domestic and commercial markets. Its versatile finish ensures it can be used both inside and outdoors, making it suitable for restaurants, cafes, events, schools, weddings and other parties. These innovative table coverings will be available in three finishes — linen weave, fine linen and a brushed texture. Made from 100% PVC, they benefit from a non-woven backing that adds a soft quality to the material, making it ideal for draping over any type of table surface. It can be easily cut, with a blade or scissors, without the edges fraying, allowing for an easy and fast finishing process. The table cover can be printed using latex, UV, eco-solvent and solvent ink technology. Importantly, it is fully waterproof and wipe-able, and its tough, resistant finish means it can be clipped securely to tables without causing damage to the covering. Michelle Dellow, Product Manager at Papergraphics, commented: “We are thrilled to be able to offer our new digidécor creatable Table Covers that will enable businesses to take personalisation to the next level at a particular event, product launch or office space.” www.paper-graphics.com

PLEASE STOP SENDING IN BLONDE OR SALESMEN JOKES Dear QPP readers, thanks for sending in and sharing your jokes. But really, enough is enough with the constant targeting of sales professionals, blondes and ladies in general… There was a blonde saleslady, a brunette saleslady and a redhead saleslady stuck on a deserted island. They were searching for food one day when they found a genie lamp. They each rubbed it and a genie popped up. He said, “Since you all found my lamp I will give you a wish each. The brunette said “I wish I was 10% smarter so I can get off this island.” She swam off the island. The redhead seeing what the blonde did said, “I wish I was 25% smarter to get off this island.” She built a raft out of leaves and branches. The blonde seeing what they did said “I wish I was 50% smarter to get off this island.” The blonde turned into a man and walked over the bridge.
CLOSE FRIENDS Although the photographer and the art thief were close friends, neither had ever taken the other’s picture.
MAKING A SMALL FORTUNE Question: What’s the best way to make a small fortune in the stock market? Answer: Start off with a big one.
CHANGE FOR AN £18 NOTE A big-city counterfeiter decided the best place to pass off his phony £18 bills would be in some small, out of the way, town. So, he got into his new wheels and off he went. He found a tiny town with a single shop. He entered the shop and handed one of the bogus notes to the man behind the counter. “Can you change this for me, please?” he said. The shop assistant looked at the £18 bill a short time, then smiled and told the man, “Sure, Mister. You want two nines or three sixes?”
“What happened to the wooden car?
LIFE AFTER SALES A woman hired a contractor to repaint the interior of her house. The woman walked the man through the second floor of her home and told him what colours she wanted for each room. As they walked through the first room, the woman said, “I think I would like this room in a cream colour.” The contractor wrote on his clipboard, walked to the window, opened it and yelled out, “Green side up!” He then closed the window and continued following the woman to the next room. The woman looked confused, but proceeded with her tour. “In this room, I was thinking of an off blue.” Again, the contractor wrote this down, went to the window, opened it and yelled out, “Green side up!” This baffled the woman, but she was hesitant to say anything. In the next room, the woman said she would like it painted in a light rose colour. And once more, the contractor opened the window and yelled, “Green side up!” Struck with curiosity, the woman mustered up the nerve to ask, “Why do you keep yelling ‘Green side up’ out my window every time I tell you the colour I would like the room?” The contractor replied, “Because I have a crew of ex-salesmen laying the turf across the street.”
TAKING ADVICE FROM YOUR BOSS My boss told me yesterday, “Ken, you shouldn’t dress for the job you have, dress for the job you want.” But when I turned up at the office today in Ghostbuster’s clothing, she said I was fired. How Far we’ve come in Equality Whenever I see a woman driving a bus I smile and think about how far we, as a society, have come in equality. And then I wait for the next bus.
With wooden wheels…
SINGING HAPPY BIRTHDAY After much convincing from her husband, Linda finally agreed to call an old family friend to sing her happy birthday. It was only after she finished singing, that the voice at the other end of the line informed her that it was the wrong number. “Oh, I’m so sorry,” she said, embarrassed. “It’s okay,” the voice said, “you need all the practice you can get!”
TELL ME SOMETHING I DON’T KNOW I told a digital printer saleslady canvassing our print shop that she was very smart. She replied, “Tell me something I don’t know.” So I asked if she knew how long her minimum period rental was?
DID YOU SEE WHO IT WAS? The young copier salesman comes running into the shop and says to his buddy, “Tommy, somebody just stole your company car from the car park!’ Tommy reacts, “Did you see who it was?” The young salesman answers, “No, I couldn’t tell... but I did get his number plate!”
ARE YOU WIPING OFF MY KISS? A grandmother lovingly gives her granddaughter a kiss on the cheek upon seeing her at a family get together. Afterwards, she noticed the little girl wiping her cheek. “Are you wiping off my kiss?” she asked. “No”, she smartly replied, somewhat embarrassed but quick on her feet, “I’m just rubbing it in!”
THAT’S NOT GOING TO HELP A woman notices her husband standing on the bathroom scale, sucking in his stomach. “You know, that’s not going to help,” she says. “Sure it does,” he answers. “It’s the only way I can see the numbers.”
And wooden engine?”
COUNTRY REFRESHMENT A man was on a long walk in the country. He became thirsty so decided to stop at a little cottage and ask for something to drink. The lady of the house invited him in and served him a bowl of soup by the fire. There was a baby pig running around the kitchen, running up to the visitor and giving him a great deal of attention. The visitor commented that he had never seen a pig this friendly. The lady replied, “Ah, he’s not that friendly. That’s his bowl you’re using.”
MI5 RECRUITMENT The Secret Service was looking for more employees. They put up a sign and the next day they picked the next three people. They brought the first guy into a room and gave him a pistol and said” Your manager is in that room go in and shoot her” The guy looked at them and said” No I can’t do it” So the Secret Service brought out the next guy and told him the same thing and handed him the gun. “He went into the room and came back out but he didn’t want to shoot her. So the Secret Service who was really desperate brought the last person in. She was a blonde saleslady so they were worried. They said,” Your manager is in that room and I want you to shoot him.” “Alright” she announced. She went into the room and the Secret Service heard a lot of crashing and banging. They went in and found the man dead. “What the hell is going on” “Oh The gun was a blank so I beat him to death with a chair.”
FLOWER REQUEST “I’m sorry,” said the sales assistant in the florist, “we don’t have potted geraniums. Could you use African violets instead?” Replied the customer sadly, “No, it was geraniums my wife told me to water while she was gone.”
PEDANTIC, OR WHAT? I just read that 524,481 people got married last year but shouldn’t that be an even number?
“It wooden go.”
