Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and Welcome to the August edition of Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. Well school is out and it is the summer holidays and so we have quite a few activities in the What’s On this month to get your kids active and occupied and having fun. Shoreham Port Open Day was in July was a fun filled day with lots to see and do and much fun was had by all – including a trip around our very own HMS Shoreham. For August we have a local famous ‘flying’ show Shoreham Air Show celebrating its 71st Anniversary on 21st/22nd August with its host of planes including the amazing Harrier jump jet. Read more about the show inside.

In September NSPCC will be having their Big Bike Ride which is a National fund raising day so if you fancy some exercise all in good cause, please give them a call. Those are just some of the events occurring in and around the Shoreham, and surrounding areas. We hope that you will enjoy them all and of course do have a fabulous hot but safe August and will see you in September. hiS SepTemBer ThoUSandS of people throughout the country will be taking up the challenge of organising their own Big Bike Ride and you can join in the fun. The NSPCC is encouraging people get on their bikes and raise money for its Child’s Voice Appeal. The NSPCC Big Bike Ride is an opportunity for anyone to get out and have some fun on their bike this September. It’s easy to take part – simply sign up for your free organisers’ pack and set a date and distance and your set. Your Big Bike Ride can be any distance you wish from a lap of the local park to miles in the countryside – it’s entirely up to you. Ask your friends, family and colleagues to join you and get sponsored to raise money for the NSPCC. All money raised by this year’s Big Bike Ride will go to the NSPCC’s Child’s Voice Appeal. The Appeal will help to expand the NSPCC’s vital helpline services – ChildLine the UK’s free, confidential 24-hour helpline for children and the NSPCC Helpline for adults concerned about a child. Lucy Hale, BIG BIKE RIDE project manager, said: “Organising your own bike ride, could not be easier. People of all ages and abilities are welcome to take part, whether they arrange a bike ride for friends in a local park or a muddy high-energy mountain bike trail in the country. Any distance makes a difference to children and young people who are dealing with the trauma of abuse.” Here’s how sponsorship money could help: • £4 could ensure that, when a child plucks up the courage to ask someone for help, their call can be answered. • £42 could pay for a child who may have nowhere else to turn to receive confidential, one to one counselling about any issue that’s important to them. • £180 could pay a trained practitioner to deliver one day of support through the NSPCC Helpline, to protect the most vulnerable children in society such as babies and toddlers who cannot call for themselves. ne oF oUr Inside Shoreham team members is about to move house and decided to leave his cooker behind for the new owners. Being only a few years old it still had many years of life in it but the last few years had built up stubborn stains and hard to remove grime. So, deciding to give it a brand new look, he referred to his local Inside Shoreham magazine and called OvenCleaners4U which to his surprise was a two man company with one being based in and around Brighton and his colleague based near Crawley. Within just a couple of days, Alex turned up on time and started work in the oven. In just over an hour we had one very very clean oven — so clean you wouldn't want to use it. The price was very good too at just £40. Alex pointed out they do not use any harmful chemicals but tend to use a lot of elbow grease and the results were exceptional. Well done Alex and thank you.

Shoreham Airshow 2010

horeham Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Airshow being held on 21st and 22nd August at Shoreham Airport welcomes the return of the Harrier Display. Last seen in 2006 doing its full display the Harrier has recently been involved in Middle East duties. This year it will be doing very few public displays. The organisers of the RAFA Airshow were delighted when they heard that it will be returning to do its tactical role demonstration which will show the capabilities of this amazing and proven aircraft. It will be based at Shoreham for the weekend. A return also of the Hawker Hunter (Miss Demeanour) flown by Jonathan Whalley in its wonderful colour scheme will delight many fans of this aircraft which has a proven track record with many air forces in the world. Jonathan has perfected his display with this fast jet so you will be in for a few surprises from this aircraft which set the Absolute Speed Record of 727.6mph off the Sussex Coast in 1953. The RAF Hawk will once again be back and will be doing its solo display in a stunning new colour scheme. It is a very fast and manoeuvrable aircraft and will be put through its paces by Flt Lt Tom Saunders from RAF Valley. It is also the aircraft flown by the Red Arrows display team. The organisers decided to add a few more jet aircraft this year so they have added two Folland Gnats to the display 6

schedule which was the mount for the Red Arrows up to 1979. The late Ray Hanna was well known for his handling of this aircraft at some very low altitudes when he led the Red Arrows. It is also a welcome back the De Havilland Vampire T11 which is always popular for those with cameras along with the Kuwait Air Force BAC167 Strikemaster flown by Tom Maloney who runs the aviation company Transair which is based at Shoreham. There are some more surprises to be announced nearer the event so keep your eyes on the new airshow website www.shorehamairshow.com for all the latest news. “With the centre piece being the Battle of Britain Scenario which features an airfield attack and a scramble by Spitfire and Hurricane Aircraft this year will see a lot more activity centred on this section. More role play actors, vehicles, and pyrotechnics will bring back the true feeling of what it was like seventy years ago at a front line airfield ‘somewhere’ in the UK,” said Airshow Press Officer John Periam. With a total of over 30 flying displays featuring around 60 different aircraft lasting for almost six hours non-stop action. Now one of the most popular family airshows held in the UK there will be lots taking place on the ground to keep one entertained from a fun fair, trade stands, craft tent through to opportunities to meet the many service personal from all three armed

services along with many of the static aircraft on show. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be flying both days along with the USAF Bomber Sally B and the return of the Catalina Flying Boat all of which played an important role during World War Two. There will be other aircraft from this era flying alongside some of these aircraft. There will also be ample opportunities to see some of the UK’s best civilian aerobatic display teams including the Blades Aerobatic Team made up of all Ex Red Arrow Pilots in their new RAFA colour scheme for this season along with the Brietling Wing Walkers, Yakovlevs and The new Pitts Duo team. A surprise visit by a popular team will be announced prior to the airshow to launch the 2010 RAFA Wings Appeal. An exciting two days is planned with more to be announced. Additionally the ticket prices the same as 2008 and these can be booked on the ticket hotline 01903 282354. With over £1,500,000 raised for RAFA from the Shoreham Airshows it is hoped that this year’s event will be the best to date to celebrate this important milestone in British History and the memory of those who gave their lives during the Battle of Britain. K inTereST raTeS were kept on hold in June for the 15th month in a row. The Bank of England also decided that it would not inject further money into the economy. The centre for Economics and Business research have predicted that rates will remain at 0.5% until the end of 2012. The base rate has not changed, but lenders have gradually been decreasing their fixed rate deals. The average rate on a two year fixed mortgage is now 4.52%, this is the lowest it has been since September 2003. (Source:Moneyfacts). Fixed rate mortgage rates have been falling since September last year as lenders try and tempt people away from the low standard variable rates. 4.52% may seem high to you, but if you have plenty of equity in your property the rate could be much lower. Remember, lenders are looking for people who have 25% equity or more, if this is you, then it would be worth reviewing your deal.

Which lender are you with? People are in a number of situations with their mortgages, much is dependent on which lender you are with. They have all taken different stances with the rate cuts, leaving things quite confusing. Some have passed on the full cuts to their standard variable rate. For example, Halifax are now at 3.5%. lder people in Adur are invited to come along and learn how to manage their mobile phones with the help of popular new courses organised by the Adur Older Persons’ Network. From the basics such as making phone calls or understanding contract and payas-you-go deals, to texting and getting to grips with menus and symbols, these small group workshops aim to improve safety amongst older people and give them the confidence to participate more fully in the digital age. The first round of courses have already been held in Shoreham, Southwick and Lancing throughout June and July, subsidised thanks to funding from the Eileen and Derek Dodgson Foundation, and have met with a very enthusiastic response from participants, from first time mobile owners to regular users. 12

Brenda Osbourne who attended the Lancing course said although she had owned her mobile for a few years already she had found the course very useful. She said: “I can do things quicker now and have learnt things which I didn’t know”. Michael Black who also attended the course in Lancing, said he and his wife had just bought a phone that week for emergencies and he had come along

to learn the basics. He too felt he had learnt a lot . Course trainer, Ray Gibson, who has been taking the workshops said: “Many older people buy phones or are given them by younger relatives for emergencies but may only have limited knowledge of how to use them, other than for dialling known numbers or receiving calls.” He went on to say: “It’s about demystifying technology and including people. A lot of older people are being left behind by technology.” Brenda Osbourne agreed, adding: “I think the older generation are scared of them still”. The next courses are planned for August and September. Course fees cost only £5 per person, covering the two workshop sessions and refreshments. eorGe alBerT SmiTh, one of the most important figures in British cinema history, once lived in Southwick’s Roman Crescent. Born in London in 1864, he moved to Brighton when his widowed mother opened a seaside boarding house there. Smith first came to prominence in the early 1880s for a stage hypnotism act he performed in Brighton, in which he pretended to have psychic powers. This brought him into contact with the Society for Psychical Research, which he then worked with for some years. Changing career in 1892, Smith bought St. Ann’s Well Garden in Hove and ran a pleasure gardens there that offered lawn tennis, glass houses selling grapes and cucumbers and a fortune teller among its attractions. Visiting London, Smith watched the Lumière brothers demonstrate their pioneering filmmaking techniques at the Leicester Square Empire theatre in March 1896. The experience made a lasting impression on him. In 1894 Smith held an exhibition of his own at St. Ann’s Well Garden using a powerful magic lantern: an early form of slide projector, to show the public a series of dissolving views. Smith’s elaborately named, "High Class Lecture Entertainments with Magnificent Lime-Light Scenery and Beautiful Dioramic Effects” and "Cinematographe. Displays of Animated Photography, Interesting and Sensational Moving Pictures", using lanternslides and projection would be the first stage in a lifelong interest in creating images. In 1896 George Smith bought a film camera and began building his own film processing works. He joined the Warwick Trading Company of Charles Urban and the two became filmmaking collaborators. Most of Smith’s early short works were shot in or around St. Ann’s Well Garden. Urban bought the rights to a two-colour additive process known as Kinemacolor that had been developed by inventor Edward Turner. As they started to experiment in colour cinematography, between 1897 and 1903 Smith used this colour process to made many films of his own. These were often comedies or adaptations of popular stories and sometimes starred his wife, comic theatre actress Laura Bayley. These included such titles as ‘Let Me Dream Again’ and ‘Mary Jane's Mishap’, as well as ‘Cinderella’, ‘Aladdin’ and ‘Mephistopheles’ Smith was credited as both producer and director for the majority of his films, and was responsible for nearly all of the work on the productions including the actual cinematography. Smith was an incredibly productive filmmaker, producing over thirty films in 1897 alone. His first public screenings took place twice daily at Brighton Aquarium. This was of a film advertised as “The Rage of London. The Photographic Sensation of the day.” Clearly he love of long titles remained unchanged. When Charles Urban bought the patent rights to the Kinemacolor system, he asked Smith to continue the improving and refining of the colour system. This brought him both fame and the Royal Society For The Arts silver medal. In 1905 Smith sold the lease on St. Ann’s Well Garden and built his Southwick home, complete with a ‘Laboratory Lodge’ behind it in which to work. Here he

continued to develop and refine Kinemacolor. With Urban he then shot the first colour motion picture. This was screened to the press at Urban’s base in London’s Wardour Street. The response was phenomenal and the two men went on to demonstrate their colour film in Paris and New York. George Smith was keen on experimenting with cine-film and he was one of the first to use the techniques of closeups, cutting and point-of-view shots. His use of the doubleexposure, where one image is superimposed over another to create a special effect is the first documented employment of that technique. Cutting edge and pioneering film equipment was installed at St. Ann’s Well Garden, where the pump house became Smith’s laboratory and a purpose built glasssided studio was constructed for filming. Alfred Darling was his resident engineer, building cameras, projectors, printers and other equipment to order. The Warwick Trading Company distributed George Smith’s films and when their appeal proved to be international, the Vitagraph Company of New York provided American distribution. In 1913 another early filmmaker, William Friese-Greene, had been developing Biocolour, his own colour film system. He had however been hampered in his work by the patents taken out to protect Kinemacolor. He took Charles Urban’s Natural Colour Kinemacolor Company to court and eventually won the case. The Kinemacolor patent was deemed invalid and Urban’s company went into liquidation in 1914. The way was now clear for Urban and Smith’s rivals to market their own colour processes. Smith decided to retire as a filmmaker and developer. Becoming a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society he spent the latter part of his life pursuing that interest. When he died on May 17th 1959, only a few of his films remained as a legacy to his genius. nleSS ThinGS haVe changed dramatically between the time I’ve written this and you read it, we have had a wonderful summer so far, more than making up for the harsh winter. It has been very dry however and many plants and trees are suffering, regardless of size or type. In order to get the best from them it is essential to ensure that they get a good watering on a regular basis. It’s a good idea to make use of any rainwater storage you have as well as the hosepipe. Don’t be afraid to make use of washing up water as well. Many plants prefer rainwater over tap water. If watering is a problem due to time restraints or size then it is worth considering installing an irrigation system. Small DIY kits can be bought online or from most garden centers. Alternatively you can have systems professionally installed, which are relatively simple and inexpensive. Whatever you do though, keep watering! If you enjoy your vegetable gardening, then this time of year can’t be beaten. It’s a time when you can enjoy the fruits of your hard work from earlier in the year. Try to keep on top of picking the produce such as beans, courgettes, peas etc to ensure that more are produced so you extend the growing season. As the vegetables are in abundance, so are the pests and diseases, so keep a watchful eye out for the usual predators such as slugs and snails, but also the diseases like blight on the tomatoes. At any sign of it get rid of the affected fruit to save the rest of the crop. You can extend the range 20

of produce you grow by sowing quick crops in any spaces that become free such as lettuce, salad leaves and radishes. It’s also a good time to start preparing for winter by looking at crops that can be sown now to produce something to brighten up the winter and early spring days. A thumb through one of the many seed catalogues should inundate you with ideas of what can be grown, but one tip is to plant potatoes now in time for the Christmas dinner! It’s a lovely time of year to spend relaxing in the garden, which should be full of summer blooms and shrubs. A few minutes here and there spent removing dead flowers from plants, will encourage it to produce more blooms as well as keeping the garden looking at its best. Have a look at any climbers you may have and give them a helping hand by training them to where you want them to go. Blooms in hanging baskets and any pots or containers will benefit greatly from a boost of a good feed. Place in some slow release pellets to help. As always with gardening it’s a case of enjoying what you have now and keeping one eye on what you want to do in the coming seasons. As well as planning the next lot of vegetables, start thinking about any spring bulbs you may want to order as most suppliers will have catalogues available now. Its also a very good time to start thinking ahead for any projects you may want to do in the garden, such as paving or redesigning

heUmaTiSm iS noT a defined medical condition as and it is generally used as a term to mean aching in the muscles and joints It may seem strange to be writing about rheumatism in the summer months, when it is usually thought to be more of a problem in the cold and wet months, but conditions with rheumatism as part of their title, such as rheumatoid arthritis and polymyalgia rheumatica (P.M.R.), are inflammatory conditions which are often worse for heat.

P.M.R. is a little understood condition and can cause marked pain and stiffness in the shoulders or pelvic region. It can come on quite suddenly tends to affect women over 60. It is diagnosed by means of a blood test and treated with steroids, which is usually helps. Fibromyalgia patients have a problem with the pain processing part of the brain, rather than having a problem with the muscles themselves, so tests do not show anything

abnormal. It is associated with sleeping disorders and depression. Again treatment is by medication. However most of our “rheumatism” is due to problems such as tight joints and tense muscles. It is extremely common and is often related to our work or posture. We can do a lot to help ourselves by keeping mobile and exercising and avoiding obesity which puts more strain on our joints. From 9.30am on Wednesday 4 August at Kingston Bay beach behind the Old Fort. Marine biologist Steve Savage and coastal ranger John Knight will help those taking part to find and learn about the sea creatures that live in the tide pools and birds that frequent the beach. Afterwards there will be a children's beach art competition. Bring a bucket and net and even a picnic if the weather's good! The Worthing International Birdman event is a competition for human powered flying machines that take off from a special ramp constructed on Worthing Pier. There are 3 flying classes so prospective entrants can decide if they wish to be a serious aviator or want to take part for fun and raise money for charity. Many flyers take part to raise money for charities, other design complex machines to aim for the distance prizes. A substantial prize of £30,000 is offered for the furthest flight should a birdman achieve over a 100 metre distance.
