Record number of visitors at Christmas event The streets were buzzing on Friday night when 7,000 visitors attended Light up Shoreham, a Christmas market and late night shopping event. With an excess of 3,000 lights on the Christmas tree and 76 stalls festooned with colourful bulbs, the town was alight with festive cheer. As well as plenty of shopping, visitors also enjoyed fairground rides, carol singing, and a visit from Father Christmas and his real-life reindeer. Shoppers were also invited to choose their favourite Christmas shop window in exchange for a mince pie. The lucky winners this year were Cancer Research UK! This was a fantastic community event and a great night for shopkeepers and market traders in Shoreham too. Cllr Emma Evans at Adur District Council said: “What a fantastic evening we had on Friday, there was such a wonderful buzz throughout the town and so many of our local traders took part making it a real community event.” “We have been so fortunate this year to not only have a great team within the council but also a fantastic and enthusiastic team of Shoreham Elves putting real energy, time and local knowledge into arranging the event. I am hoping that with their help we can build on this year’s success to make next year’s event even bigger and better.” Further details can be found at the community group’s Facebook page @lightupshoreham

SHOREHAM PORT HOLDS CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY EVENT FOR SAMARITANS As a Trust Port, Shoreham Port offers regular support to charitable causes within its local community. In December, the Port was delighted to have supported the Samaritans Brighton & Hove at their Christmas Charity. The Samaritans exist to serve the community by providing crucial support to those that are vulnerable within society. As well as the core Samaritan listening service that the charity provides from their centre in Hove, the charity gives talks in Brighton and Hove for a variety of organisations including local schools, and trained listeners to support prisoners who are in emotional distress. The Port has donated to the charity and have contributed all proceeds from its annual Christmas Jumper Day. A number of festive favourites have been on show, brightening up the office. Rodney Lunn, Chief Executive at Shoreham Port commented “We were very keen to support the Samaritans this year. Christmas can be a very difficult time for some people and the Samaritans do an incredible job offering support in their time of need. Our Christmas Jumper Day has become a firm favourite in our calendar. We have a great day fundraising for very worthy causes and we look forward to passing on any proceeds raised to the charity.” A representative from the Samaritan’s Brighton & Hove commented “Thank you so much to Shoreham Port for their support, which is so valued and appreciated. We wish you a merry Christmas and a peaceful new year.” If you would like to learn more about the Samaritans and how to donate to the charity, please visit www.samaritans.org/ branches/brighton-hove-and-district-samaritans

Bridge refurbishment almost complete The 125 year old Shoreham Viaduct which measures 360m and spans the River Adur since 1892, has been strengthened to carry all modern trains. The National Railway has spent £9,5m in its refurbishment. The new paintwork will protect it from salt water for 25 years. With work been running over the last year the refurbishment is nearly finished.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR AND A WARM WELCOME TO PEMBROKE FINANCIAL SERVICES PROVIDING FINANCIAL ADVICE AND IDEAS TO SHOREHAM AND SOUTHWICK IN 2018. Hello and welcome to what will be our regular contribution to this excellent magazine. Pembroke moved to Shoreham two and a half years ago and we have been advising individuals, companies, trustees, business owners and their staff for nearly 25 years. Now we all know that New Year resolutions have a tendency not to last very long. By the time the festive season ends and the decorations are put away, the eat less/drink less/exercise more resolutions have also often disappeared. For 2018, try adopting a different type of resolution – a financial one. HERE ARE FOUR POSSIBILITIES: 1. We will review our ownership of investments. The past few years have seen a steady flow of changes to the tax treatment of investment income, such as the introduction of the personal savings allowance and the reform of dividend taxation. It is now more important than ever for couples to review who owns which investment. 2. I will obtain an estimate of my current pension benefits. The recent changes to pension rules, across both state and private pension provision, could well have altered your retirement income, how you can draw benefits and even when you will receive some of your pension. 3. I will review my Will. Ensuring your Will is up to date is one way to make sure your assets are dealt with in the way that you want when you are not around. If – as many people do

– you have no Will and assume the laws of intestacy will resolve everything, you could be seriously mistaken. Intestacy does not always mean everything passes to a surviving spouse or civil partner, which is especially hazardous if you are in an informal relationship. 4. I will complete a Lasting Power of Attorney. In many respects no Will is complete without a matching pair of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) or the equivalents in Scotland or Northern Ireland. LPAs allow you to appoint one or more people to make decisions for you if your health – mental and/or physical – prevents you from doing so. In personal financial planning, as in many other aspects of life, putting things off is seldom wise. All the resolutions listed here don’t require regular commitment, so why not call us now and start 2018 the right way?

How to avoid injury when hitting the slopes this winter

T

his winter will see a lot of people heading for the slopes to ski or snowboard. Being a fast and exhilarating sport, it is also a high-risk venture for causing injuries. The sheer number of people on the slopes, weaving in and out of each other’s way is one reason alone for why injuries can occur, where people do not see danger, or cannot steer clear of harms way. Skiing and snowboarding also requires a huge amount of endurance and leg strength to be able to exercise for such long

periods. Flexibility also plays an important role in being able to ski or board with good technique so that muscles can work optimally and with ease. If we don’t have the flexibility or strength to get our technique right, then the risk of getting injured becomes greater.

How can we minimize these risks?

Wear a helmet. Firstly, and most importantly wear a helmet. There have been known cases of injuries and even deaths occurring through not wearing helmets, and protecting our heads. 20 years ago when I first skied, nobody wore a helmet, nowadays; you’re a minority if you don’t. Nobody cares what you look like on the slopes. Stay safe and protect your head. Do leg strengthening exercises. If you want to reduce knee injuries, then you need to build and strengthen your quads and hamstrings, which are the muscles in the front and back of your thighs. It used to be recommended that you performed static squats, with your back against a wall to strengthen your quads, but times have changed and dynamic exercises such as squats, jump squats and leg press are much more effective. Doing 2 to 3 sets of 10 reps every other day, starting a couple of months before your holiday will bring you strength benefits and reduce your risks of nasty knee ligament sprains or ruptures. Develop your core strength. Doing core strength exercises, such as planks and bridging exercises will help provide stability to your back and help you reduce your risks of injuring yourself, should you fall over during your time on the slopes. It also means your can maintain your posture for longer and helps you save energy by making you more efficient. Work on your leg flexibility. You need to have flexibility in your ankles, calves, and thigh muscles if you’re going to be able to get your weight forward onto the fronts of your skis and be able to squat. You should stretch each leg muscle group for 1-minute holds, 2-3 times per day and before and after exercise. Beginning of the New Year and luck. So here we are again at the start of the new year, ready to begin again. Except, in the garden it’s not the start. Its just

10

another point in the endless cycle of nature in the garden. Whilst we may think of it as the start of the gardening year, many of the plants have already made a head start on their work, in many cases hidden from view, producing shoots under the ground, or unnoticed with new growth coming in the already established foliage. So now is a really good time to take a walk around the garden and try to see what is going in your garden. Have a good snoop around and see what is already starting to appear. You’ll probably be quite surprised. Most people tend to think that the garden is completely dormant over winter, but far from it. I always find it a lift to see the new shoots coming through, with the promise of what they bring and warmer longer days ahead. Its also a good way to see what is still in the garden and what will be filling the spaces, before you go digging up areas of beds or sending money on new plants. One thing I often get asked by clients, is if a shrub is dead. The easiest way to check is to scratch a bit of its bark off with your thumbnail. If its got a green coating under then its still alive. I’m sure many healthy plants must get destroyed off on the assumption they have had it. But in the same breath don’t be afraid to get rid of something that really is dead or well past its best. The beginning of the new year brings so much new promise and potential and its certainly no different in the garden. We all look at the garden and hope that it will be a good year with the weather and that all our favourite plants will bloom well. Now really is a good time to actually look at what you want from the garden and put those ideas in to some sort of plan. It doesn’t have to be anything on a grand scale. It can be just deciding to sort out one small bed, or revamp the pots on the patio, or deciding to grow some new plants or vegetables with the children. Whatever you do, do something and make this a better year in the garden and give it a go. It would be one promise for the new year that would be worth keeping and a lot more enjoyable than many other promises that don’t see the end of January such as going to the gym! Has Your Double Glazing Steamed Up?

New Year New Skin

J

anuary can be a time when we review and evaluate, plus make plans for the Year ahead, often with good intentions to improve our health and wellbeing. Winter time can be the hardest months for our skin to go through, especially with the cold weather combined with central heating, the changes in temperature can play havoc with the skin. Perhaps you have been eating heavier foods and during the Christmas period unhealthy snacks at parties, and social engagements with alcohol, or perhaps wearing heavier makeup. This busy period can mean not having enough time to take care of yourself and your skin as well as you would like, causing outbreaks, puffiness, uneven complexion and dull dehydrated or oily skin. With the new year ahead here are five top tips to get your skin looking fresh, radiant and healthy whilst also benefiting your overall well-being. 1) Ditch sugar. Refined sugar can cause your insulin levels to spike and an inflammatory response in the body, the effect of this can cause a release of enzymes that break down elastin and collagen leaving us prone to more lines and loss of tone. 2) Add antioxidant foods to your diet. Think naturally colour rich foods such as berries, skin healing sulphur rich greens such as kale, spinach and broccoli plus sweet potatoes and carrots give natural sweetness and beta-carotene for healthy skin. 3) Create a skin ritual. At least once a week use a natural clay powder to make a mask. Steam the skin using a bowl of hot water, add a drop lavender and lemon essential oil and cover your head with a towel taking in the beautiful aromas whilst helping to purify your pores and allowing for greater uptake

of a facial oil or moisturiser product then follow this with a facial massage for glowing skin. 4) E xercise! It really doesn’t have to be too strenuous just something that increases your heart rate gets the blood pumping and preferably out in the fresh air such as brisk walking or cycling will really do wonders to invigorate your complexion and give you a rosy glow. Many skin problems can be improved with exercise as it will help the lymphatic system and circulatory system to cleanse toxins, benefiting the mind, body and the complexion whist bringing extra oxygen to the skin’s surface for that rosy glow. 5) R elaxation- I’m going to be specific here. I’m not talking about slumping on the sofa watching television! I’m talking about deep relaxation, the kind that lowers the blood pressure, calming the mind and release stress from the nervous system. This can be accessed in many ways such as with deep breathing exercises, yoga or meditation. The benefits of this is not to be underestimated as deep relaxation can clear stress from the body and this peace will reflect in the face, giving an instant lift. We may have seen the impact that stress can have on our skin, yet a short session of deep relaxation can reap huge benefits to our overall well-being and physical health and skin. Try 5-10 minutes daily or at least 3 times a week to sit quietly, focus on the movement of your breath, the inhalation and exhalation, just observe. If your mind is very busy you can count on the out breath up to 10 and then on the in breath to 10. You will find your breath naturally becomes slower and deeper and your mind more peaceful. If you find it hard to focus you can listen to a guided meditation or join a meditation group, the benefits to your inner and outer world will be huge.

New Year, New You, New Lion!

B

y the time you read this you won’t want to see another turkey and the recycling bins across Shoreham and Southwick will no doubt be overflowing with empty bottles. Now is the time that traditionally we reassess our lives and maybe undertake to do things slightly better or start new activities. One of the best resolutions you could make would be to help out your local community and an easy way of doing this is to volunteer with your local Lions club – Adur East Lions. You will have seen the monthly articles in this magazine detailing the community service provided by the club but the members are only ‘Ordinary People’ doing ‘Amazing Things’ (one of the Lions’ mottos). Here are a few thoughts from existing members on why they are a Lion: “Since the age of 28 I’ve done voluntary work in a variety of settings. Working with the Lions club for the last 12 years has given me the variety I was looking for – from organising large scale fundraising fashion shows and quizzes to chatting to old people at a tea party and rattling buckets in the street. There is something for everyone, however little time you have to spare.” (Lion Val Roberts) “It’s not just about helping to raise funds for local good causes but there’s the social side and making new good friends.” (Lion Chris Maslen)

“Achieving great things for the local community while having FUN with new friends.” (Lion Pearl Boyce) “Lions are not just for retirees, all ages are welcome to help in the community and to socialise with each other.” (Lion Brian Teggart) “I love being part of the Lions club as it’s like getting a whole new family. Having people around you who genuinely care about others is very comforting and at the same time inspiring. It’s a privilege to be a member of the Lions organisation and I hope to be a part of it for many years to come.” (Lion President Claudine Rogers) One of the newest members, inducted on 28 November said “I had followed the Lions’ activities for a while and admired the good things they do. I wanted to be part of it and so became a Friend of Lions to get to know them better and then joined. I’m looking forward to the next Donkey Derby.” (Lion Martin Bennett)

Shoreham Air Sea Rescue In World War Two

I

n 1942 Group Captain Richard Atcherley ditched his Supermarine Spitfire into the English Channel. After bailing out of his sinking aircraft’s cockpit he was battered by the icy waves. Afloat on his back looking up at the sky he saw a Westland Lysander spotter plane. Sergeant Tom Fletcher of No. 277 Air Sea Rescue Squadron based at Shoreham Airport was flying it. From the Lysander’s wing, bomb racks dropped an inflatable dinghy pack and smoke flares to mark Captain Atcherley’s position. Radio communication with a nearby fishing trawler ensured his recovery and safe return to land. Captain Atcherley was the first of six hundred airmen to be saved from the English Channel by this Squadron. C Flight of No. 277 Squadron came into being in December 1941 operating from Shoreham Airport as part of No. 11 Group, Fighter Command. No. 225 Reconnaissance Squadron also flew Westland Lysanders from the airport. Initially in 1940, their role was coastal patrol, watching out for the seemingly imminent German invasion. The intention was to bomb and machinegun any attempted German troop landings. The 225 switched to Air Sea Rescue in May 1941 and in January 1942 were equipped with Hurricanes before switching to Mustangs prior to deployment in North Africa in May 1942 as part of the allied campaign. No. 277 Squadron was also equipped with Supermarine Walrus single engine biplane flying boats. These were able to land and take off at sea and Flight Lieutenant Neal was rescued and returned to Shoreham by one of them on the 1st May 1942. The Walrus planes could operate from the harbour and often boated in after a rescue if they were damaged and unable to take off from the sea. 1488 Fighter Gunnery Flight also used the airport and towed drones behind their Lysanders for target practice by other aircraft. Due to parts shortages and with the need to keep the 277 operational some of Lysanders were now replaced with Bolton Paul Defiants’. Originally a fighter, this plane was found to be no match for the enemy Messerschmitt Bf109 and Focke Wulf Fw190. The Defiant lacked significant firepower and flew too fast making it harder to spot a downed pilot among the waves of the English Channel. Two Focke Wulf Fw 190 fighters bounced a Lysander flown off Littlehampton on the 12th August

1942. After shaking off the attackers with a 180-degree turn, the Lysander made a 180-degree reversal to get underneath and machine gun one of them. The enemy fighter Shoreham Airport splashed down into the sea and the second fighter was chased away. Walrus aircrews based at Shoreham were awarded several Distinguished Flying Medals, commendations and a Distinguished Flying Cross. They performed last minute daring rescues of downed pilots floating in the mine filled waters off the French coast. Often they did this under artillery fire and having to leapfrog floating mines upon landing and taking off to escape with the saved. Unarmed Walrus planes were under constant threat of attack from Messerschmitt Bf109 fighters. In 1943, the Defiants were replaced with Spitfires. These were additionally fitted with bomb racks loaded with an inflatable dinghy pack and smoke flares. They were sufficiently armed to search ahead in pairs to locate and drop a dinghy to downed aircrew. The Spitfires would provide air cover for the incoming Walrus that would rescue the people in the water and then be escorted home. In 1944, the headquarters of No 277 Squadron was relocated from Gravesend in Kent to Shoreham Airport. In June after the D-day landings and with the launch of the German V1 offensive, the Spitfires were tasked with stopping these flying bombs. As the liberation of Europe continued, there was less need for air sea rescue operations. In September 1944 an Air Ministry film crew based itself at Shoreham Airport while making a documentary about air sea rescue that featured the squadron’s aircraft. No. 277 Squadron was disbanded in February 1945, before the war ended. Among its awards for its aircrew were an OBE, 12 DFC’s and 6 DFM’s. Judy Upton

New longer visiting hours from 10am to 10pm each day are better for patients and visitors

atients will enjoy seeing their friends and family more at Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester from Friday 1 December when new longer visiting hours are introduced. Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is extending visiting times from just 3.5 hours a day to 12 hours, with adult inpatient wards open from 10am to 10pm, seven days a week. Chief nurse, Nicola Ranger, said: “We’re delighted to extend ward visiting hours to provide more opportunities for friends and family to come into our hospitals and spend time with their loved ones. “Social interaction and keeping in touch with life outside of hospital is really beneficial for patients and not only helps the time pass but importantly keeps their minds healthy and engaged as well. “Longer visiting hours will also help family members to speak in person more with consultants, therapists and other members of their relative’s care or discharge planning team.” The decision to extend visiting times follows pilots on six wards where open access was trialled for three months, enabling visitors to come and go at any time of day or night. Feedback and consultation with patients, visitors and staff

informed the new arrangement to open wards each day from 10am to 10pm. Western Sussex Hospitals cares for nearly 142,000 inpatients a year and is one of only five acute trusts in the country to have received an Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission. The trust, which runs hospitals in Chichester, Shoreham and Worthing in West Sussex, has a leading reputation for quality improvement and enabling its staff to bring about positive change. Each day, colleagues gather for improvement huddles where ideas to improve patient experience are raised, discussed and implemented. This approach creates an empowering environment where the status quo is challenged and new ideas can flourish. Recent innovations include the introduction throughout the hospitals of free guest WiFi internet access and the trial of new colourful and clearer signage to improve wayfinding for visitors.

Friday night dating contest of ‘Blind Mate’ sails into Shoreham

T

he month of love and romance will see singletons try to win a date and prize when a live stage show of ‘Blind Mate’ appears in Shoreham on 2 February. Winning contestants in the format similar to the once popular TV show of ‘Blind Date’ can bag either a romantic meal for two or a even a night away in a hotel. Brighton & Hove-based Love Doctor Monti will play host to the monthly show and will be sharpening his cupid’s arrows for the trio of singletons, who will be trying to impress the man or lady asking them three questions on stage at Shoreham’s Crown & Anchor. But, like the TV show, the contestant who asks the questions won’t see the trio and has to make a decision as to which one will go on a date. And there will be an amusing reminder before dismissing two singletons. A DJ set follows the show, when the audience can mingle or dance with the evening’s contestants. Love Doctor Monti explained: “This is an exciting alternate

way for individuals to meet potentially their dream partner, and with Valentine’s Day around the corner prior to our first show we are hoping that love is in the air from the beginning of this thrilling adventure. “Everyone knows how to flirt, this is an opportunity for those who don’t wish to be shallow about looks and pick someone solely because of their personality.” Anyone interested in being a contestant in the ‘Blind Mate’ show should contact lovedoctormonti@ rightflirt.club / 07903552007. To book a place to watch the ‘Blind Mate’ show, tickets are £6 each or £10 for a pair of tickets, visit www.RightFlirt.club.
