Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and welcome to the September issue of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. This month is quite a big month not only for me but for so many parents who will be seeing their child go to ‘big’ school for the first time. I never thought it would come around so quickly. It is both exciting and daunting when I think of the shift from a nursery size to my daughter coping with being in a class of 30! I cross my fingers, knees and toes and hope that we will both survive this change. For other parents, their children will be going up to a larger school and others, children will be leaving for University. Life continues at its normal frenetic pace. The Good Shepherd Church is celebrating its 98th year. There will be a number of activities which you can take part in, please
see page four for more details. We also have the up and coming free Fireworks Display on Shoreham Beach which has been a great success and of course we definitely would like another one this year, so please see how you can help to make that happen. Also on page four is The Shoreham Wordfest for 2011. Finally, Judy Upton’s piece on Shoreham War Defences is fascinating. I didn’t realise the true extent of the war defences in this area. the Shoreham Bonfire Society Family Bonfire and Fireworks Night will be held again for the second year running after more than 1500 attended the evening last year. The Family Bonfire and Fireworks Night will be held on Saturday 12th November adjacent to the Church of the Good Shepherd, Kings walk, around 7pm, preceded by a procession from Beach Green. There will be coffee available at Beach Green and Light stick vending as we gather for the procession led by the Beach Bateria Samba Band. Awaiting at the Church will be catering and real coffee, a kids mini ride as well as the massive bonfire and spectacular firework display. We are also hoping to have a fire entertainer. Full First Aid, Emergency Service and security support will be provided. This year the society have to pay for the fireworks up-front so they are pressing the need to raise funds right now. They raised £500 on their Quiz Night Raffle and Auction in July but they really need their many other supporters to contribute to their war-chest as generously as they did last year. Shoreham Wordfest 2011 A
group of enthusiastic local writers and readers has come together to organise a literary festival in Shoreham by Sea: Shoreham WordFest 2011. The four day event (Thursday 29th September until Sunday 2nd October) will start on the evening of Thursday with a performance supper at Chambers Restaurant on Shoreham High Street, featuring poetry and plays from writers associated with Sussex, along with a three course meal and glass of wine. There will be play readings at the Shoreham Centre on Friday evening, September 30th, with actors reading the works of two nationally acclaimed local playwrights, Mathew Turner and Judy Upton followed by discussion with the audience. On Saturday October 1st there will be a concert of Shoreham Singers by Sea celebrating words in song, with poetry and prose readings from 12-1pm at St Mary de Haura, followed by the opening of a telephone box book exchange on the newly pedestrianised East Street. There will be a river walk with poetry readings on Sunday morning, October 2nd, and a creative writing workshop from 10am, to 2pm at the Shoreham Centre, tutored by nationally acclaimed crime writer, Sue Walker. The WordFest events culminate with an open short story and poetry slam competition at the Ropetackle arts centre from 7pm on Sunday evening. The group wants the event to be a celebration of the spoken and written word, with readings and discussion, poetry, song, books, plays and other writings. They are starting with the four day event this year, but want to build for more events during the year leading to a larger festival in September 2012. Their spokesperson, Rosalind Turner said: “We want a mixture of new and established writers, to inspire and intrigue, to entertain and stimulate. "As well as bringing authors into the area, we will focus on the considerable local talent we have in Shoreham and the surrounding area, to encourage new writing and to develop new readers and audiences. We want the festival to be very engaging and participative, aiming for writing, reading and active workshops for all ages, links with schools and community groups, and also some high profile events attracting a wide range of people. "We have only just started as a group and are keen to get others involved, both in the events for 2011, and in organising for 2012. We are particularly keen to hear from local book groups who want to get involved in the open events on Saturday October 1st, and anyone who wants to attend the performances.” Anyone wanting to get involved, or wanting to know more about the events, please contact the group at info@shorehamwordfest.com. Church of the Good Shepherd nearing its Centenary
T
his year, the Church of the Good Shepherd celebrates its 98th year on Shoreham Beach, and we are starting to plan for our centenary celebrations between July 2012 and July 2013, as the church’s 100th birthday falls on or around 16th July 2013. This autumn we have some great events that people would enjoy, whether they are habitual church-goers or not, in either the Church or Church Hall, on Kings Walk. On the weekend of 1st/2nd October, we will be celebrating Harvest Festival, with a Harvest Supper on Saturday evening, a Harvest Festival Service at 10am on Sunday morning, and a Harvest Brunch after this in the Church Hall. In addition, though, we’ve decided to join in the national celebration of Back to Church Sunday that weekend – so we hope to invite people who’ve maybe forgotten how much fun church can be to come along with a friend that Sunday at 10am and dip their toes back in the water. On Saturday 8th October, we host a concert by rising stars Laura Ward and the Risen Road, who played recently to a packed house at the Shoreham Folk Festival, and in May wowed them all at Ropetackle. Laura and Matt Szul, with other talented musicians from the local area, perform original 4
and traditional music drawn from nu-folk, bluegrass and Irish sources, featuring Laura’s haunting vocals and Matt’s harmonies, with a variety of vocal and instrumental backings from others in the Band. It should be a fantastic evening. On Sunday 9th October we will hold our first Pet Service for many years in the afternoon as we celebrate the memory of St Francis of Assisi. Anyone can bring along their beloved companion/s for a celebration of the love and companionship we share with our pets and an opportunity for them to be blessed. And on Sunday 30th October at 4pm we are hosting a Party to celebrate NOT Halloween, but All Hallow’s Eve. Do you remember what Halloween parties USED to be like? Lots of fun for all ages without the X-rated horrors! We hope that people of all ages will enjoy coming to our party for a bit of innocent fun in the Hall with apple-bobbing and other games, a yummy tea, all followed by a short act of worship in the church suitable for everyone to join in. Neighbourhood Policing ROAD CLOSURES You will no doubt all be aware of the incident that happened on the afternoon of Monday 4th July 2011, when a small plane crashed resulting in the tragic death of the pilot. This was clearly a very serious incident which resulted in the A259 Norfolk Bridge being closed for some considerable time. We are aware that this caused considerable delay and inconvenience to motorists and public transport, and there were a number of drivers who complained to the officers on the road closures about being inconvenienced. My motivation for writing this article is to explain to you why it was necessary to close the road on this occasion and also to explain why we sometimes have to close the road for road traffic accidents. Following the report of the plane crash, an early decision was made to close the A259 Norfolk Bridge between the High Street and Saltings roundabout. The main reason for this was to provide clear access and egress for the many different emergency service vehicles that were required to attend the scene. Secondary reasons for the road closure, included, preserving evidence as debris from the crash site was strewn over a large area which may have included the road; and to prevent road accidents occurring on the A259 by drivers who may have been distracted by the major incident being dealt with clearly in view from the road, particularly in light of the number of pedestrian bystanders at the location. I must stress, that the police are always aware of the impact that this can have on road users and we make every attempt to open the roads again as early as possible. We do understand the frustration that this causes to drivers but this does not change the fact that this inconvenience is unavoidable, and a detour was necessary. You may also be aware that later in July it was again
necessary to close the A259 Norfolk Bridge to westbound traffic following a road accident involving a motorcyclist on Saltings roundabout. This was a serious accident, where a person had received potentially life-threatening injuries. The accident was in a very awkward position on the roundabout itself, and the westbound closure was unavoidable. In cases of fatal and potentially fatal accidents, the Police are under a duty to fully investigate the cause and as such the road does need to be closed to allow investigators to secure important evidence, to support any future prosecution, and to give answers to the family of the injured or deceased person. This investigation is carried as soon as possible, and roads are opened again as soon as they possibly can be. The duration of a road closure is dependant on the nature of the incident and the location, and it could be for a short while, or in some cases, several hours. Whilst I understand the inconvenience that these road closures cause, I would just ask that people consider the reasons I have explained. I think it’s important to remember that whilst these closures may cause a delay in people getting home, that this is because there has been an incident where somebody won’t be going home to their family that evening, or who has received life-changing injuries. ven in today’s slower property market people can see the value in keeping their existing property when they want to move. Long term, property has always been an excellent investment and many people’s first homes are ideal for letting out. This is especially the case in our area which is very popular for renting. Over the past few weeks, many people I have seen have wanted to do this. They want to move but don’t want to lose the property they already own. If you have equity in your property this can often be achieved, the deposit for the new place can be raised by arranging a “buy to let” mortgage on your current place. There are limits to how much you can borrow, your current mortgage would be redeemed and the excess capital used as towards your deposit. If you don’t need to raise any capital, and you have a deposit independent of borrowing further money, many residential lenders will give “permission to let”. This means that you can keep your mortgage where it is and your lender will allow you to let it out. Some lenders will increase your rate if you do this, but many will allow you to keep the same rate. So, once the deposit amount has been calculated, you would need to find a lender for your new property. This new lender needs to be comfortable with the let property in the background. All residential lenders will have criteria to decide whether they will ignore the let property, but assuming they do, they will base the new mortgage on your earned income with normal lending policy applying.

Camp Confidence, a comedy written by Diana Raffle and directed by Jane Frost tells the story of four women lacking in self-esteem who take a course in self-confidence. Two attend to try and overcome agoraphobia and a fear of birds and are joined by a single mum on probation and an obsessive cleaner. The other two one-acts are Peas and Carrot both written by David Tristram and directed by Julian Batstone. Peas tells the story of a couple on a blind date arranged by a dating agency and Carrot is about the managing director of an ailing company and his unusual request to the union rep. The disappearing heat of summer F
resh back from holiday and I did seem to jinx the weather. The heat is slowly going out of the summer as we slip towards the cooler autumnal days. A real feature of the last few weeks has been the high winds which have played havoc with many of the taller unsupported plants in the garden. It really is the time of year when the vegetable and fruit plants should be producing ripe bounty faster than you can pick it. Try to keep it going as long as possible by routinely picking your crops, and put it into storage as soon as possible. As the warmer temperatures and daylight are decreasing it’s really a race to get everything ripe. Be prepared to be ruthless. If a plant has not really done anything yet, weigh up the probability of it producing anything before the end of the season. If you decide it’s a waste of space then put it on the compost heap. If you keep it then remove any extra growth and let the plant concentrate its energy on producing the fruit. Some crops such as tomatoes will still ripen once off the plant on a sunny window cill, or will make excellent chutneys whilst still green. Don’t forget to keep feeding plants that are producing. As always when returning from holiday I was amazed at how different the garden looks and how everything had grown in such a short space of time. Many plants had taken a battering in the wind, so make sure any plants that need canes or need tying up are well

supported. Don’t forget to loosen off ties that were put on when the plant was younger as they can easily outgrow and strangle themselves on these. Again if flowering plants are past there best don’t be afraid to dig them up if they are annuals and compost them. Keep on with the deadheading to keep blooms going as late into the season as possible. For plants that flower every year from bulbs, don’t be tempted to cut them back too quickly. They need to recharge the energy in the bulb for next year. Allow the greenery to die back naturally before tidying it up a little later. It is always well worth giving them an extra feed as they start to die back to help recharge the bulbs. Looking ahead now is a good time to check for any repairs that may need doing now or over winter. Check fences to make sure they are secure. It’s much better and usually cheaper to get repair work done now rather than after the high autumn winds, when one loose panel can bring a whole row of panels down. Check other structures as well such as pergolas and trellis that have been supporting the weight of the summer growth and plan for replacement or repair if necessary. I know it seems a world away but bearing in mind the cold snowy winter we had last year, check hedges and trees to see if they need autumn pruning to avoid damage from high winds or heavy snow. We had several instances of this, and a quick prune will benefit the tree and
avoid unnecessary damage. Keep enjoying the garden and make the most of what’s left of the summer and the lighter evenings. Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

Shoreham War-time Defences
F
rom 1939 onwards various kinds of wartime defences were built in Shoreham to repel any attempts of an invasion by Germany. The coast and river were protected by gun emplacements and other defences, as were main roads, the railway line and airport. Some of these defences, or at least evidence of their existence still remain today. Hairpin roadblocks were made by slotting bent over steel rods, often pieces of old railway track, into rectangular holes in the road. The concrete surrounds of these wartime roadblocks were until recently still to be seen on a slipway to the River Adur from the High Street. Another site where hairpins were used is to the east of the Old Toll Bridge at Old Shoreham. Here there is still one remaining example of this bent piece of railway track, based in a concrete foundation. Overlooking the Adur valley, Mill Hill was defended from 1942 by a Canadian regiment, with camouflaged weapons pits large enough for two soldiers each and three two-pounder anti-tank guns. There is little evidence of this defensive site left today however. The main defensive structures still visible today in Shoreham are the gun emplacements that would have in wartime housed 25-pounder artillery guns. Usually they were built from concrete, with three sides and an open back. They were known as pillboxes because of their shape. Sometimes they were disguised with turf or shingle on top, or where they faced onto town streets, occasionally disguised by painting as shops. The Adur valley was a route any invading force could have used to penetrate further into the country and so the river Adur was well guarded as far as Partridge Green and Henfield. Further along the coast the Arun was protected in a similar way. Pillbox building nationwide had begun in May 1940 and by late July of that year 8000 had been completed countrywide. Although army engineers built some, many civilian firms were also used. This fact along with the speed at which they were constructed and the particular defensive requirements of certain locations meant many of them were unique in design. The main period of pillbox construction was over by 1942. In Shoreham, a gun emplacement still exists on the west side of the old Toll Bridge on a little mound beside the access road to the airport. Then there is a row of them along the raised path on the river’s western bank leading towards the rail bridge.

These could protect both the river and the airport and of them, six remain in reasonably good condition today. They include two Type-22 pillboxes designed for six men with five light machine guns and a rifle, and a Type-26 square strong point designed for five men with four light machine guns, as well as some unique designs. There is also still a pillbox south of the railway line near Old Salts Farm. On the northeast corner of the airfield at Shoreham airport there is a large dome, which was an anti-aircraft training facility. In late 1939, inventor Henry Stephen had the idea to use projected films to train anti-aircraft gunners. The image of an aircraft was projected onto the dome’s interior and a fluorescent light provided the blue-sky effect behind the plane. A dummy gun had a small projector attached that shone a light spot where the gunner was firing and allowed the instructor to check the accuracy of each shot. Sound effects for the gun added to the authenticity. In 1940, the artist’s enclave of Bungalow Town on Shoreham beach was evacuated. All of the buildings near or on the foreshore, apart from the Church of the Good Shepherd were demolished in order to obtain a clear field of fire in case of an invasion. A number of pillbox gun emplacements were constructed here at regular intervals, and disguised as buildings of various kinds. These coastal defences were nearly all demolished during the subsequent redevelopment of the beach. There are the remains of a concrete pillbox on the West Beach however, partly obscured by the shingle bank. The design was unique to Shoreham and the modest structure was meant for no more than one or two men and a light machine gun. Further along the beach, the western arm of Shoreham harbour, near the Old Fort was protected by brick searchlight tower that is still there today. It would have been built soon after the start of World War 2. Its main purpose was to detect enemy ships, rather than aircraft. Once illuminated by the searchlight, the ship or submarine could be fired on from the artillery of the coastal pillboxes and other gun emplacements. A second searchlight was operated from the balcony of a house nearby. Guns were also mounted on concrete emplacements on top of the fort itself, bringing the Napoleonic building back into service for the last time. Judy Upton
