Noteworthy news from the Madison Symphony Orchestra
The Planets: An HD Odyssey Our 2016-2017 season is upon us, and it promises to be an exciting one! Our first concert is once again all orchestral, and puts the spotlight firmly on our own musicians, with music from throughout the twentieth century: Enescu and Holst at the beginning and Corigliano at the end. George Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1, long an orchestral favorite, has never been performed by the Madison Symphony. It is filled with folk melodies and dances, and is an exhilarating piece of orchestral writing, and quite a celebratory way to begin our season. We continue this celebration with the Chaconne from The Red Violin, a great film score by John Corigliano, for which he won an Academy Award. This beautiful and technically challenging work will feature our wonderful concertmaster Naha Greenholtz (pictured left). When I first learned of the space film developed to go with Gustav Holst’s The Planets, I knew I wanted to bring this unusual pairing to Madison. This multimedia experience has had spectacular success in its previous outings and is not to be missed. While this gigantic orchestral work focuses on the astrological personalities of the planets, the film, using NASA imagery, should place us in an extraordinary environment in which to enjoy the many moods of the piece. This promises to be an exceptionally exciting opening concert, and I hope all of you will join us and bring friends and family members as well!

By the time of this concert, we will be well into the fall season, wistfully leaving summer behind, and preparing for Thanksgiving with our weekend excursions into the countryside to enjoy the fruits of the harvest time. What a better time, then, to experience Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (Pastorale) with its bucolic beauty resounding in our beautiful Overture Hall.

The orchestra and I look so forward to our collaboration again with Henning Kraggerud, both as a star violinist, and this time also as a wonderful composer. When Henning told me he had written twenty-four postludes under the title Equinox, I asked him to send me a recording he had just made with his own orchestra. I loved these pieces immediately, and chose three of them for our performances. I know you will love them too. They are full of character, richly melodic and cleverly rhythmic. Max Bruch’s very sensual Violin Concerto No. 1 will also display the talents of our soloist and is sure to be a quintessential performance.

This season will continue to feature quite a few first performances by the Madison Symphony, and Edward Elgar’s In the South will open this program as one of them. This extended overture is like a Straussian tone poem, written for a large orchestra with thrilling contrasting sections inspired by Elgar’s summer vacation in Italy. This piece is long overdue for a performance by our beautiful ensemble. So, from Beethoven to Kraggerud, your ears will be ringing with delight at this concert.

EVENING OF GRATITUDE On May 23, Vivace Circle and Maestro Circle donors joined John DeMain and MSO staff for “An Evening of Gratitude,” celebrating the high-quality performances and education and community engagement programs that were made possible by donor support in the 2015-2016 Season. The spoken program included thankyou testimonials from a HeartStrings partner staff member, an Up Close & Musical partner teacher, and the winner of the 2016 Bolz Young Artist Competition, who described their experiences as “life-changing” and “unforgettable.” Following the event, many guests attended the Rhapsodie Quartet’s free community recital in Promenade Hall.

EDUCATION HIGH NOTES
The 2016 Fall Youth Concerto Competition is open to Wisconsin musicians in grades 4-8 who play piano, string, wind, brass or percussion instruments. Winners will be featured during the annual Fall Youth Concerts on November 15, 2016, playing with the MSO for an audience of their peers. Winners will also receive a scholarship to attend the UW-Madison Summer Music Clinic in June 2017. Applications are due Thurs., Sept. 1, and can be downloaded at madisonsymphony.org/fycc.
The MSO is one of the few orchestras in the nation to welcome the public into select dress rehearsals, free of charge!

Annually, the MSO offers a Docent Program to schools who are registered to attend the Fall Youth Concerts. During these docent visits, an MSOL member teams up with a musician from the orchestra to provide students with information about musical selections, composers and concert etiquette. Q: What inspired you to become a music educator? A: I have always been passionate about music and working with children; both have guided who I am and how I live my life as long as I can remember. I have always believed in the fact that music is in each of us and is a necessity for a complete life. Q: What is your goal for every student who enters your classroom? A: My goal for each child is simple — live the joy of music and actively participate in musical opportunities throughout their lifetime. This is my passion and it is fueled by the joy in the heart of each child as they explore melodies they create, express how a musical selection makes them remember their grandmother, or beam with delight as they perform a song with guitar that takes them to new levels… Q: What do you find to be the most rewarding aspect of teaching music to students every day? A: Every little “aha” moment is monumental, nothing is ordinary. When a child demonstrates a melody that they wrote at home, or a nonverbal by choice child begins to sing for the first time… these are glimmers that music is moving into the daily life of a child. The Madison Symphony Orchestra League could not have ordered better weather for its 22nd annual Concert on the Green on Monday, June 27, at Bishops Bay Country Club. In the morning, golfers teed off under sunny skies — not a cloud or raindrop in sight! Our first ever Honorary Golf Chair Sherri Steinhauer joined the foursomes on the course to cheer them on, pose for team photos and have fun. Our media partners proved to be the winning golfers; NBC 15’s two foursomes were the first and second place teams and the Isthmus foursome came in third.

BACKSTAGE WELCOME NEW MARKETING DIRECTOR PETER RODGERS Peter Rodgers, a native of Madison who has spent the majority of his career on the West Coast in marketing and the arts, became the Madison Symphony Orchestra Marketing Director this July, when Teri Venker retired.
Peter served as the director of marketing for the Marin (CA) Symphony Orchestra for several years where he developed and implemented a comprehensive new audience development program that resulted in increased donations and ticket sales. He is also the founder and creative director of the branding and integrated marketing firm Montara Creative for over 23 years, serving such clients as the San Francisco Art Institute, Apple Computer, SONOMA Magazine, and
Shutterfly. Most recently, he was the director of marketing & communications for the Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership in San Rafael, California. Peter holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and music from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While growing up in Madison and playing the violin, he performed with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras.
