HIGHWAY TO NOWHERE

BALTIMORE, MD HIGHWAY TO NOWHERE

FRANKLIN–MULBERRY

EXPY.

This design intends to support the economic revival of these West Baltimore neighborhoods by transforming US-40 into an urban park. The integration of the red line will promote the use of public transit and increase access along the east-west corridor of Baltimore.

Plan rendering done by Madison Mohan. Design was a collaborative effort among group members.

TIME & LAND INTERTWINED

This design aims to embody the nature of African American art and culture through the infusion of basket weaving imagery into the landscape. A continuous flowing path weaves through the existing hardscape, tying together past and present by traveling through existing as well as newly added reading groves. Further, planting textures are used to mimic the texture of woven baskets.

A GREEN RETREAT

*transplanted on site **existing on site

This site is a vacant lot in the Broadway East neighborhood in Baltimore. The goal of this design was to create a green space that constrasts with and softens the built surroundings, providing a gathering space where the community can rest, play, connect, and escape the stresses of day-to-day life. This design includes a covered seating area with wifi, a community garden, open lawn space for unperscribed use, and is fully ADA accessible. All existing trees on site were protected, and bioretention is included along low points of the site, capturing and treating stormwater to minimize pollution.

KALEIDOSCOPE PARK

This design aims to create a space that is welcoming to all and represents the identity of the community. The colorful stained glass gazebo acts as a focal point to enhance the vibrant surroundings. There is larger, more open plaza space to be used for informal gathering or events, and a smaller, intimate seating area with tree cover that maintains privacy yet frames the view of the city to the northeast. A large open lawn space is good for kids to play or to lie in the sun. Plant material surrounding the site creates a green haven within a busy area. Gardens down the slope collect stormwater and aid in erosion prevention.
