It started in 1845 with A.A. Brayton building his first house and store on a ridge on the crawfish river. That same year Brayton constructed a dam across the Crawfish that is still used to this day. The Merrimac Ferry is a must for your visit to Columbia County. The free Merrimac Ferry is located on Hwy 113 across the Wisconsin River/Lake Wisconsin area between Okee and Merrimac. It is operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from about April through November, depending upon the weather. Well over 200,000 vehicles travel on the Ferry a season. Bring your camera because you will see beautiful scenery and native wildlife to the area. This ride takes just about 7 minutes to cross the Wisconsin River to the other shoreline. While you wait for the ferry to arrive you can enjoy a cool summer treat of ice cream at the local shop or even enjoy a picnic lunch in the park area. The Merrimac Ferry dates back to 1844, when Chester Mattson obtained a charter to provide ferry service at the present-day location. It was operational long before there was a marked road leading to

or away from it. According to conflicting sources, Mattson charged either 35 cents or $1 to ferry a team and wagon across the river. The ferry was humanpowered until around the turn of the century, when the first gasoline engine was added. In 1933 the toll was eliminated and The State of Wisconsin took over the ferry with the operation and maintenance now performed by the Columbia County Highway Department. The first ferry was Colsac, a wooden ferry that had a capacity of 8 cars. It was replaced by the Colsac II in 1963, with a capacity of twelve cars. Launched on May 16, 2003, the current Colsac III cost $2.2 million to build and carries 15 cars across the river linking both Columbia and Sauk counties. The Colsac name is cleverly derived from both county names. Once you are on the ferry, get out of your car and take in the scenery of the Wisconsin River. Enjoy the gentle breeze during a crisp fall day as you take in all the wonderful colors along the trip across. Don’t miss your opportunity to come and see the United States leg of the 2025 Canadian Pacific Holiday Train in Columbia County! The CP Holiday Train is North America’s longest rolling food bank fundraiswer and since it started in 1999, the program has raised close to $24.3 million and more than 5.3 million pounds of food. All shows on the CP Holiday Train are free! In lieu of tickets, please bring a food or monetary donation for your local food bank, which will be on site taking collections. The train stops in Couumbus, Portage and Wisconsin Dells along the route across North America. Each stop hosts a free music show for you to enjoy. It will be outdoors and standing. THE AMISH COMMUNITY The Amish community is a rural community and somewhat different than what most urban people might expect. It is widespread over several townships and consists of small to medium-sized Amish farmsteads and individual homes, many with a small business on the property. Regardless of whether the person is engaged in farming or not... each home has at least a small barn for one or more horses and a grazing area.

On some rural roads in the community almost all the inhabitants will be Amish...in other areas the Amish will be intermingled with non-Amish, or “English”, homeowners or farmers. The Amish refer to all people not members of the Amish Community as “English”. Amish business people operate many businesses that cater to the needs of the Amish community itself. Many of these businesses are of great interest to local and regional folks...including many visitors to the area...who wish to purchase goods made in the Amish tradition of craftsmanship and quality. These businesses are usually open Monday thru Wednesday, plus Friday and Saturday. Amish businesses are typically closed on Thursday and Sunday, though this varies from business to business. Thursdays special events such as weddings are held in the Amish Community and, of course, Sundays are honored as the Lord’s Day and a day of rest...with the exception of tending to the needs of the farm animals. When you visit Columbia County’s Amish Community please make your trip a safe one. Remember, you may be driving on hilly, curvy and narrow township roads...and amongst horse drawn buggies. You must exercise greater caution! •

You can explore John Muir Park, the boyhood home of the famous Naturalist. You can tour our county’s large Amish community and see life less complex. When traveling in the area many motorists are not aware of how to drive when they come upon a horse and buggy. In an effort to increase the safety of all those who use the roadways in this area, here are some safe driving tips. 1

Avoid rapid acceleration or unnecessary vehicle noises when passing or near a horse and buggy, loud noises may startle the horse as well. Following a few simple tips as a motorist will help make our roadways safer.

All operators and passengers of all ATVs/UTVs shall comply with all federal, state and local ordinances, laws, orders, regulations, restrictions and rules.
HELMETS • All individuals under the age of 18, either operating or riding on an ATV/UTV, must wear a helmet. OPERATOR REQUIREMENTS • No person who is at least 12 years old and who is born on or after January 1, 1988, may operate an ATV unless holding a valid WDNR safety certificate or a valid certificate from another state or Canada. • Minor shall carry the certificate while operating, and shall present the certificate to a law enforcement officer upon request. • No person who is under 16 years of age may operate a UTV on a roadway. PROOF OF REGISTRATION • ATVs/UTVs shall have their Wisconsin DNR registration number clearly visible and in legible letters from the rear of the vehicle.
• A copy of the current, valid registration certificate shall be present on the vehicle and shall be presented to law enforcement when requested. SPEED LIMITS • Where speeds are not posted, ATVs/UTVs shall not operate at a speed greater than 35 miles per hour(MPH). • When within 100 feet of a pedestrian or within 150 feet of a home, ATVs/UTVs shall not operate at a speed greater than 10 miles per hour (MPH). HOURS • Shall not be operated on any County Highway between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. LIGHTS • Shall not be operated on any County Highway without fully functional headlights, taillights and

brake lights. OPERATIONS • Shall operate on the far right side of the paved surface. • Shall only operate on the paved portion of the County Road. • Right of Way; unless yielding the right of way or lane if pavement does not exist. • Multiple units shall operate in single file, providing sufficient distance between vehicles. • ATVs/UTVs may not harass or restrict travel for frightened or distressed animals used in transportation within the roadway. SEATBELTS • All occupants riding in or operating a UTV shall be required to wear a seatbelt when traveling on any County Highway in Columbia County. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!

SKIING Come check out the skiing or tubing at Cascade Mountain! Cascade Mountain has 44 trails. They have something for everyone with a wide variety of beginner, intermediate, and advanced trails. The longest trail at Cascade Mountain is called “Far Out”, a beginner cruiser trail that takes you past old growth forests, waterfalls, rock formations and more scenic terrain. It is 5,300 feet long, or just over a mile. Adele’s Alley, also a beginner trail, is about a mile long, also. Or enjoy the beauty of Columbia County by trying cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. What a great way to get exercise and enjoy the winter scenery.
HUNTING There are excellent hunting opportunities! Whether hunting with a gun, bow, or a camera, there are plenty of opportunities to capture white-tail deer, wild turkeys, water fowl, and small game. There are hundreds of acres of public hunting areas as well as private land for enjoyment of these activities. Please check with the Department of Natural Resources for hunting regulations and always ask permission before entering private lands.

BECK WATERFOWL PRODUCTION AREA
DEKORRA WETLAND PUBLIC HUNTING GROUNDS
Three miles of hiking trails located 1.5 miles north of Pardeeville on the west side of Hwy 22. The nature trail system on this 357 acre Waterfowl Production Area (WPA) was developed and is maintained by Indian Trails Campground in collaboration with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. A WPA consists of wetland habitat surrounded by grassland and woodland communities. While a WPA is managed primarily for ducks and geese, it also provides habitat for a variety of other wildlife species such as non-game grassland birds, shorebirds, wading birds, mink, muskrat, wild turkey and deer. Trail head parking areas are located across from Indian Trails on Haynes Road, also on Wendlick Road and Hwy 22. Trails are for foot traffic only. The WPA is open to wildlife observation, hiking, cross-country skiing, nature study and photography. Dogs must be on a leash except while engaged in hunting during established open seasons. Take only pictures, leave only footprints!
226 acre property - find it eight miles northwest of Poynette off of Highway V just west of Interstate 90/94. The property consists of approximately 15 acres of wetland, 46 acres of upland and 165 wooded acres.
COLUMBUS WETLAND PUBLIC HUNTING GROUNDS 248-acre property - find it by taking Lewis Street from Columbus, which turns into old Hwy 73. The grounds are just north of Hwy 151 bridge on the west side of the road. The property consists of approximately 175 acres of wetland, 60 acres of upland and 20 wooded acres.
DUCK CREEK WETLAND PUBLIC HUNTING GROUNDS 159 acre - find it four miles east of Wyocena on Highway G, on south side of G, section 21 town of Springvale. The property consists of approximately 100 acres of upland and 60 acres of marsh/stream.
ERSTAD PRAIRIE Operated by the Madison Audubon Society, Erstad Prairie, a 60-acre parcel, three miles northeast of Goose Pond Sanctuary, is adjacent to the 720-acre Schoeneberg Marsh Waterfowl Production Area. Visit Erstad Prairie to see a wide variety of nesting grassland and wetland birds. Habitats include restored prairie, wetland, and a large grassy field dominated by common milkweed that provides habitat for monarch butterflies. Walk down the abandoned Harvey Road to view the large wetland where you may find American pelicans and great blue herons. Parking is available off of Harvey Road. Open to the public year-round. No dogs please. Trails at the sanctuaries are mown grass with gentle elevation changes. madisonaudubon.org
FRENCH CREEK WILDLIFE AREA Cty. Hwy. F, north of Portage, this twocounty area includes 3,152 acres of open marsh wetlands, upland grass fields, lowland timber, shrub type wetlands and warm water stream habitats suitable for ducks and geese, deer, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, fur-bearing animals, sand hill cranes, herons, egrets, shorebirds and songbirds. Two man-made dikes create flowages for waterfowl and fur-bearing animal habitat. Some warm water fishing occurs in the flowages.

GIBRALTAR ROCK LODI Rising 200 feet above the surrounding landscape, Gibraltar Rock is a flattopped butte, an outlier of the Magnesian escarpment. With a thin Platteville-Galena dolomite cap over St. Peter sandstone, the butte offers panoramic views of the Wisconsin River Valley and Lake Wisconsin.
GOOSE POND SANCTUARY Operated by the Madison Audubon Society, Goose Pond Sanctuary, one mile south of Arlington on Goose Pond Road, is 660 acres of restored tallgrass prairie and wetland. Goose Pond is the centerpiece of the sanctuary. It is a shallow prairie pothole that hosts thousands of migrating waterfowl during spring and fall. The bird checklist is 253 species. Fifty-one species of birds nest at Goose Pond. Hike some of the 12 miles of trails that wind through restored prairies where, in the summer, you will find a wide variety of wildflowers and grassland birds. Begin your visit at W7468 Prairie Lane where you will find a kiosk and a trail with an excellent view of Goose Pond. Pick up a trail map to help you find other parking lots and trails. The premier hiking trail is the Browne Prairie Trail that begins at a parking lot located on Kampen Road about 300 yards west of the railroad tracks. Open to the public year-round. No dogs please. GRASSY LAKE WILDLIFE AREA
Cty Hwy. CS, Poynette. More than just a wide spot in the Wisconsin River, Lake Wisconsin is 9,000 acres of unlimited water activities, including sailing, swimming, boating, water-skiing, and canoeing. Fish taken here include sturgeon, panfish, walleye, bass, northern and lunker muskies. Accessible from a number of boat landings, resorts and campgrounds, Lake Wisconsin is Central Wisconsin’s natural water fun center.
695 acre property - find it three miles southeast of Rio on Highway 16. Take Erdman Road or Fischer Road off from Highway 16. The property consists of approximately 380 acres of wetland, 210 acres of upland and 105 wooded acres including open water and shrub/ cattail marsh wetlands, hardwood timber and grassland habitats suitable for waterfowl, squirrel, rabbit, grouse, pheasant, fur-bearing animals, sand hill cranes, herons, egrets, shorebirds, and songbirds.
LODI MARSH WILDLIFE AREA Cty. Hwy. Y, south of Lodi, 1,044 acres in Columbia and Dane counties combined, including cold water stream frontage, shrub wetlands, hardwood forest, cropland and grassland fields suitable for deer, grouse, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, fur-bearing animals, sandhill cranes, songbirds and trout.
HAMPDEN WETLAND PUBLIC HUNTING GROUNDS 229 acre property - find it by taking Highway 60, six miles west from Columbus to Highway A, then south on A four miles to Arnold Road. The Department began acquiring land for this public hunting ground in 1966. Much of the property is marshy potholes with lowland timber.
HINKSON CREEK FISHERY AREA Hinkson Creek drains a small watershed (9 square miles) as it flows a distance of 6 miles to its junction with Rowan Creek, a tributary to the Wisconsin River. An abundance of springs throughout the stream course maintain water temperatures capable of supporting a high quality brook trout fishery. Thirty-nine mammal species including muskrat, raccoon, red fox, mink, white-tailed deer, fox and gray squirrels and cottontail rabbits. Beaver are known to inhabit the stream. The presence of 153 bird species has been documented in the area which includes the common waterfowl species, ring-necked pheasants, woodcocks and ruffed grouse. It is likely such endangered species as the bald eagle and osprey, along with the threatened red-shouldered hawk and loggerhead shrike, pass through the area.
NATURE TRAILS
HIKING TRAILS AT THE HISTORIC INDIAN AGENCY HOUSE The Historic Indian Agency House Nature Trails are adjacent to the Portage segment of the Ice Age Trail. The trail head is just across the road and north of our parking lot and follows the old Portage Canal. This 3/4 mile path offers flat, easy hiking, and wildlife abounds along the way. Watch for woodcock, quail, and songbirds in the woods along the trail, or see if you can catch a glimpse of a heron, teal or other water birds in the canal. A variety of turtles, snakes and frogs also might be spotted along the trail or banks of the canal.

JENNINGS CREEK WILDLIFE AREA
MUD LAKE WILDLIFE AREA
530 acre property - find it by heading north out of Rio on Hwy. SS 2 miles to Jennings Road, then east on Jennings less than 2 miles to Ludwig Road, then continue to Jennings Creek. The area includes cold water stream frontage, shrub wetlands hardwood forest, and conifer timberland suitable for deer, grouse, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, sandhill cranes, fur-bearing animals, songbirds and trout.
Cty. Hwy CS/Q, Poynette. This environmental center operated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is open for every season. The property features native prairies, woodlands, and a nature pond to explore. Five hiking trails wind through the forests and are suitable for all ages; one trail is also ADA accessible. Visitors can enjoy viewing our resident native wildlife (wolves, owls, bison, and more) in our native wildlife area, and visit our conservation exhibit and historic log cabin. Search ‘MacKenzie’ at dnr.wi.gov. 2,283 acre property, find it south of Rio 1 mile on Hwy. C, then west on Drake Road 1 mile. Consisting of approximately 1450 acres of wetland, 590 acres of upland, and 220 acres of wooded habitat. You will find a hardwood forest, grassland fields, cropland and shrub wetlands, suitable for waterfowl, deer, pheasant, grouse, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, sandhill cranes, furbearing animals, herons, shorebirds, and songbirds. Two man-made dikes enhance water levels of the large wetlands to improve waterfowl habitat.

PINE ISLAND WILDLIFE AREA OTSEGO MARSH Operated by the Madison Audubon Society, Otsego Marsh is an 80-acre sanctuary, located three miles south of Rio on Old County Road F. The habitat consists of 48 acres of oak-hickory hardwood forest and pine plantation, along with 32 acres of mostly openwater marsh. Breeding birds include wood ducks, hooded mergansers, barred owls, pileated woodpeckers and scarlet tanagers. A woodland trail begins at the parking lot on Old County Road F. Open to the public yearround. No dogs please. Trails at the sanctuaries are mown grass with gentle elevation changes. madisonaudubon.org
5,499-acre property - located along the Wisconsin River southwest of Portage. The property consists of approximately 1,200 acres of wetland habitats, 1000 acres of grasslands, 1500 acres of oak/ savanna habitats and 1,900 acres of wooded habitat. Includes cattail and shrub marshes, lowland hardwood, grassland fields, cropland, river islands and native prairie habitats suitable for deer, pheasant, squirrel, rabbit, turkey, grouse, ducks, geese, fur-bearing animals, sandhill cranes, herons and songbirds.
SCHOENEBERG MARSH WATERFOWL PRODUCTION AREA
1,588 acre property - find it by going south of Randolph one mile on Highway 73 to Highway G. Go west on G three miles to the wildlife area. The property consists of approximately 1,270 acres of wetland, 260 acres of grasslands and 60 acres of wooded habitat. You will find warm water stream frontage with extensive cattail and shrub marsh wetlands, hardwood timber, grassland fields and cropland. Habitat is suitable for deer, squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, furbearing animals, sandhill cranes, herons and songbirds.
This 720-acre complex is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is adjacent to Madison Audubon’s Erstad Prairie. The marsh is surrounded by restored prairie and savanna habitat. Nesting birds include blue-winged teal, red-headed woodpeckers, American kestrels, marsh wrens, and yellowheaded blackbirds. Many species of waterfowl can be seen in spring migration. Four parking lots provide easy access. Begin your visit at the Priem Road parking lot (0.9 miles east of Highway 22) where a paved/ boardwalk trail winds through restored prairie and ends at an observation platform. There you will find benches and a spotting scope overlooking the open marsh.

SWAN LAKE WILDLIFE AREA 2,466 acre property - one mile east of Portage off of Highway P in Columbia County. The property consists of approximately 2,000 acres of wetlands, 100 acres of grassland and 366 acres of wooded habitat. The Fox River flows through the Swan Lake Wildlife Area in a northwesterly direction from Swan Lake on the east. Extensive cattail marshes, lowland aspen woodland, shrub wetlands, grassland, and a 1.5 mile dike for water level control, suitable for deer, pheasant, rabbits, ducks, fur-bearing animals, sandhill cranes, herons, shorebirds and songbirds.

GOOSE POND SANCTUARY In Columbia County In the Town of Leeds, there are several prairies (Sue Ames, Hopkins Road, and Ankenbrandt) that are part of the larger Goose Pond Sanctuary. Erstad Prairie, next to Schoeneberg’s Marsh, is also in the town. All are open to the public.
HOPKINS ROAD PRAIRIE A 40-acre tallgrass prairie restoration with 1.5 miles of mowed hiking trails. Off-road parking area is on Hopkins Rd. east of Goose Pond.

ROCKY RUN CREEK FISHERY Located southwest of Wyocena between State Hwy. 22 and U.S. 51, 750 acres of cold water stream frontage, shrub wetlands, upland hardwood forest, grassland fields and some cropland. The stream provides a fishery for brown trout. Habitat is suitable for deer, grouse, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, sandhill cranes, fur-bearing animals, songbirds and limited waterfowl use.
ROWAN CREEK FISHERY From Cty. Hwys. J and CS west of Poynette, along Rowan Creek,
650 acres of cold water stream frontage, shrub wetland and lowland hardwood habitat suitable for deer, grouse, squirrel, rabbit, sandhill cranes, fur-bearing animals, songbirds and limited waterfowl use.
WISCONSIN RIVER WISCONSIN DELLS TO PORTAGE Running approximately 19 miles from Wisconsin Dells to Portage, the Wisconsin River is a great place to float, boat, canoe, sail or swim. Accessible from numerous public and private boat landings and launching ramps along the way, during low water periods, the river has many sand bars to lounge on and shallows to wade in. Under these conditions, canoes and small boats that can be dragged over sandbars are recommended. Fishing enthusiasts will find sturgeon, bass, panfish, northern, walleye, muskie and more in these waters.
Hike west from Hopkins Road Prairie parking area down the quarter-mile access lane to the trailhead. Two miles of mowed trail inside and around the edge extend through tall grass prairie on rolling terrain that provides good views to the west.
ANKENBRANDT PRAIRIE Visitors can walk north on the mowed old farm lane from Kampen Road to Highways 51 and 60. This large, productive restoration features over 50 plant species on 80 acres. Park in mowed area at southwest corner of the prairie just west of Hopkins Road.
ERSTAD PRAIRIE A 60-acre sanctuary, with 18 acres of wetlands and 42 acres of uplands, has a hiking trail to an overview of a small wetland frequented by migrating waterfowl and marsh birds. Hike north to see the expansive 700 acres of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Waterfowl Production Area at Schoeneberg’s Marsh, a premier prairie wetland with nesting Yellow-headed Blackbirds and Black Terns. The entire parcel is open during the fall for hunting.

VISIT OUR VALLEY VIEW PARK SPLASH PAD Valley View Park, located at 300 Park St., is home of the Splash Pad. Hours of operation for the Splash Pad are 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., 7 days a week, Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. The pavilion is available on a first come first served basis.

Yuletide AT THE PORTAGE
Portage comes to life during our Yuletide celebration! The festivities kick off on the day after Thanksgiving when Santa Claus arrives to greet all the kids. He makes his way that evening to downtown to participate in the lighted Holiday Parade. People line the parade route to welcome him and when the parade ends, they help him light the Christmas tree at Commerce Plaza. On the next day Santa comes back to downtown, this time with his reindeer and elves. You can stop by and tell him all about what you want for Christmas and get your photo taken with his reindeer. Plus, you can enjoy a free movie at Portage Theatres just by bringing a non-perishable food item for our local food pantry. Santa loves cookies! He spends the first Saturday in December at the Portage Cookie Walk. You can come visit various stores and fill your cookie box with lots of yummy treats. Don’t eat them all at once… you should share at least one with Santa at Edgewater Home and Garden where you can have your photo taken. Santa is still quite busy leading up to Christmas, but he takes time to have breakfast with all the kids in Portage at our local Culver’s on the second Saturday in December. Wyocena is located just off Hwy 16 and Hwy 22. The Village of Wyocena is the 7th smallest community among those in Columbia County. With a population of 756, the Village of Wyocena is a small community that has a large heart. Grande Cheese is the major business in the village. The Columbia County Care Facility and Columbia County Highway shop are also located in the village and employee many area residents. The village park, Dickason-Toppe, is located off Hwy 22 by the Wyocena Community Center. Various youth activities along with a church softball league use the Dickason-Toppe Park in the summer time. The Community Center has village offices and a gym that is used during the winter months for walking, youth basketball and wrestling. The Community Center also has rooms to rent for parties or for a larger event the gym may be rented.

The Community Center also has a library thanks to the vision and generous donation from Olieve Huggett Hiller Estate. The library is part of the South Central LIbrary system which gives residents access to extensive library resources. The Wyocena Community Center is located at 165 East Dodge Street. The Helping Hands Food Pantry is located in the Wyocena Community Center. Helping Hands serves residents in the Pardeeville School District. Wyona Lake (Wyocena Millpond) is a 96 acre lake located in Columbia County. It has a maximum depth of 12 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing. Fish include Panfish, Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike. Wyona County Park located on County Trunk GG has picnic areas and public restrooms, plus fishing and trails.
