adison County is located within the sacred homelands of the Oneida, or Onyota’a:ká:, people, one of the original members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The Oneida homelands originally spanned over six million acres from the St. Lawrence River to the Susquehanna River. The Oneidas warmly welcomed settlers to their homelands, and even fought beside them during the American Revolution at the nearby Battle of Oriskany and in other

pivotal conflicts. These brave men and women became known as America’s First Allies for their role in the founding of the United States, a legacy that endures today. This unique shared history—along with the vibrant culture and heritage of the Oneida people—is showcased at the Oneida Indian Nation’s Shako:wi Cultural Center. Open year-round, the handcrafted white pine log building is a testament to the rich lives, talents and enduring heroism of the Oneida people. At Shako:wi, visitors can explore this legacy with exhibits featuring Oneida traditions, artistry and craftsmanship, including basketry, beadwork, wampum and more. Annual events include a spring craft fair

featuring Native vendors and Haudenosaunee social dances. Today, the Oneida Indian Nation remains deeply rooted in its traditions and commitment to the ongoing revitalization of its culture. Peterboro, once home to prominent abolitionist Gerrit Smith, played a significant role in supporting freedom seekers traveling the Underground Railroad.
