It has been my privilege to serve the City of Madeira as council member, vice mayor, and mayor over the past seven years My journey with Madeira City government began on the Planning Commission, where I had a hand in shaping our first-ever comprehensive plan. Adopted in 2019, that plan created a clear roadmap for our community’s future, and I am proud that we have enacted or taken meaningful steps toward nearly every goal outlined within it

My work on the plan guided much of my time on Council. I always tried to take a forward-looking approach “looking over the horizon” to ensure that the decisions we made today were informed by a vision for tomorrow. Together, we have made significant progress:

Infrastructure Improvements: Though not always visible, we have replaced aging stormwater and water lines, making investments today that will prevent problems tomorrow. While still ongoing, the revitalization of Miami Avenue through our business district promises safer pedestrian access, smoother traffic flow, and a stronger environment for private investment Extending these improvements to Laurel Avenue and Camargo Road will bring even more benefits.

McDonald Commons Renovation: The newly renovated McDonald Commons is a signature accomplishment for our city Its functionality, beauty, and popularity reflect the thoughtful planning and execution behind it. Few cities of our size could deliver such a high-quality community asset.

Water System Transition: Earlier this year, Council acted to transition half of Madeira from Indian Hill Water to Cincinnati Water Works This decision ensures residents receive water that already meets new federal standards and spares the city the burden of maintaining costly infrastructure.

Of all the decisions I’ve had a role in, I consider the appointment of Michael Norton Smith as City Manager one of the most consequential. Following Tom Moeller’s long and successful tenure, Michael faced high expectations and has met them with dedication, humility, and skill. Thank you, Michael, for your outstanding leadership

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Finally, I want to express my gratitude to my colleagues on Council – past and present – and the residents of Madeira for entrusting me with this responsibility. It has been an honor to play a part in fulfilling the Madeira promise: Great lives truly are made here!

As we close out 2025 our second year of major community improvements it’s worth celebrating what’s been accomplished and previewing what’s ahead Altogether, these efforts represent a $30 million investment—three times the City’s annual operating budget—and will replace aging infrastructure before costly emergencies arise. While road closures and detours are undoubtedly inconvenient, planned replacements are significantly less disruptive (and less expensive) than emergency repairs. Nearly $20 million in outside funding was secured through our valued partners: the Hamilton County Commissioners, ODOT, SORTA, and OPWC.

Recent Accomplishments

Since 2023, Madeira has completed several transformative projects:

McDonald Commons Park: A state-of-the-art recreation space now hosting over 2,000 youth athletes and nearly 500 community room reservations in 2025 alone.

Miami Avenue & East Galbraith Road: A new mini-roundabout and sidewalks, in partnership with ODOT, have cut serious accidents from one per month to one per year

Downtown Infrastructure: Replaced century-old watermains, relocated utilities underground, upgraded traffic signals, and replaced a 15-foot culvert laying the foundation for Miami Avenue’s upcoming streetscape improvements. Duke Energy also installed a new gas main to prevent future leaks.

Neighborhood & Regional Work: Partnered with Sycamore Township to repave Euclid Avenue and add sidewalks, enhancing connectivity between communities. The City also resumed its Residential Street Program, resurfacing Indian Trail Drive, Camargo Green Court, Shawnee Lane, Windridge Drive, and Windsong Court—renewing Council’s 20-year paving cycle goal

What’s Next

Duke Energy expects to finish gas line work on Miami Avenue by November, with the remaining aerial utility lines removed soon after. The City is again coordinating to minimize downtown construction during the holidays

Surface improvements pavement, curbs, and sidewalks on Miami Avenue are scheduled to begin in early 2026 under ODOT’s management. Similar work on Laurel Avenue (Miami to Euclid) will follow, with Camargo Road construction starting later in the year.

Separately, the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) will begin the Kenwood Hills Sanitary Sewer Project in mid-to-late October, requiring a temporary closure of Camargo Road between Madeira and Madisonville. More details are available later in this newsletter.

KENWOOD HILLS SEWER PROJECT

The Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) has notified the City that the Kenwood Hills Sewer Project will get underway this fall. MSD will be constructing a new sanitary sewer in the Kenwood Hills neighborhood. The project will install approximately 9,500 feet of 8-inch diameter gravity sewer and 3,300 feet of 2-ich diameter low pressure main Upon completion, the neighborhood will be part of the public sanitary sewer system and the need for the on-site septic systems will be eliminated The project is scheduled to be completed in the Summer of 2027.

Traffic will be impacted by this project. Camargo Road will be closed between Demar Road and East Ledge Street for approximately four months beginning this fall. The exact date of the closure will be shared once it is announced The detour will be Shawnee Run Road - Miami - Indian Hill Road, for both north and south traffic Please follow the City’s social media accounts for road closure updates

Light Up Madeira and the Children’s Holiday Passport - December 6th

Gather with friends and family downtown at Light Up Madeira on Saturday, December 6th, from 12:00PM to 6:00PM. Enjoy decorated stores, horse drawn carriage rides, hot chocolate, live music and the traditional lighting of the tree at Fountain Park.

MADEIRA WOMANS CLUB

As the leaves turn vibrant colors and the air grows crisp, the Madeira Woman’s Club is buzzing with excitement. Imagine a community coming together not just to celebrate the season, but to make a real difference. From our successful Scarecrow Lottery at the Street Dance to filling the cruiser at Kroger, we ’ ve already accomplished so much We can’t thank you enough for your support and participation!

We’re also excited to announce our 4th Annual Veterans Day Fundraiser at Ali’s Bar and Grill on November 7, 2025. A huge thank you to Ali for graciously hosting us year after year. While you ’ re there, check out our wide variety of raffle baskets and enjoy lunch, dinner, or a snack

The club will also be participating in Light Up Madeira once again, offering pinecones for the birds and hosting a small bake sale.

MADEIRA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Our November program, open to all, will be held at the Madeira Library on Saturday, November 15, 1:00 pm The subject this month is “Chester Amusement Park History from the 1930’s” For family historians, places like Chester Park remind us of how our ancestors spent their free time If your family lived in Cincinnati in the late 1800s or early 1900s, there’s a good chance they visited Chester Park.

Open House dates for the Miller House and grounds are scheduled for the first Saturday and third Sunday in November and December from 1:00 – 4:00 pm November 1 and 16 and December 6 and 21 Stop by and check out our new plant and tree identification tags that have been updated after their original installation by Spring Grove Cemetery staff over twenty years ago

VETERAN’S BRICK RETURN - FINAL OPPORTUNITY

The final opportunity to claim the memorial bricks from the former McDonald Commons Veterans Plaza will be in the lobby of the City Building the week of Veteran’s Day between November 11th and November 15th 8am5pm

Mon - Wed (11th -13th) are reserved for claiming the bricks that belong to your relatives and loved onesthis will give everyone that ones their own family’s brick one last opportunity to claim it.

Thurs and Friday (14th and 15th) will be open for anyone who would like to claim remaining bricks to come do so - regardless of your relation. Any community member who would like to adopt brick(s) can do so on these dates.

SPLASH PARTY 2025

Nearly 200 Madeira middle schoolers splashed their way into the new school year on July 23rd during the annual Splash Party, held at the Madeira Swim and Tennis Club In addition to listening to DJ Butlers play their favorite tunes and eating on pizza and Kona Ice, the 6th, 7 and 8 graders participated in a cannon ball and flip contest. th th
