greetings from the chair
In 1911, George Bailey, a young man with a dream and a clear vision moved his then 10 year old start up dining chair company to Hickory, North Carolina. Beginning with a single chair design, George was able to fulfill his life’s ambition as Hickory Chair prospered and expanded into upholstered and wood furnishings for the entire home. Hickory Chair became the first furniture company to make upholstery in Hickory. In 1931, as the company introduced the Dorothy Robinson Collection, it became North Carolina’s first licensed furniture collection. One can only imagine the pride George felt when he retired in 1951.
Over these 115 years, Hickory Chair has celebrated these and many other milestones. Whether facing economic depressions, wars, recessions, changes in ownership, or even the bankruptcy of our parent company - twice, we have remained steadfast. Through every challenge, we have focused not only on survival but growth. Each day, our dedicated craftspeople arrive at our Hickory, North Carolina facility knowing that while we may not be able to change the world, we can create something meaningful—one-of-a-kind pieces that will find their place as a part of a home, bringing beauty, comfort and joy to a family. This sentiment is at the heart of our work. As our artisans steadily make each piece, they do so with the understanding that each piece is made not for a box, but for a person, their space, and their story.
We are committed to keeping our promises—not just in the quality of our craftsmanship but in our word. Each day, we see beautiful spaces showcased on social media and in the pages of magazines. When our pieces are featured in these designs, we know that the designer is as proud of their work as our artisans were in crafting each piece.
Reflecting on all that Hickory Chair has celebrated and experienced since 1911, our journey has become our strength. Through it all, over the decades and generations of employees, we have remained resilient, fueled by passion and with a commitment to excellence. We believe the best is yet to come. We have wonderful plans for this anniversary year milestone and beyond. We think George would be proud of the company today.
We invite you to visit our website to explore our vast product assortment. We hope you will plan to visit an authorized trade showroom or furniture store to experience the style, comfort, and elegance of our products. It would be an honor to create something special just for you. After all, at Hickory Chair, we make furniture for people who take furniture personally.
Forever grateful,

At the Fall 2025 market, Hickory Chair debuted an exclusive collection of Liberty fabrics at the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, North Carolina. As Liberty celebrated its 150-year anniversary, the renowned British design house created 11 bespoke colorways of its iconic fabrics, designed specifically for Hickory Chair. Marrying Liberty’s rich heritage in textiles with Hickory Chair’s 115 years of American furniture craftsmanship, this collaboration brings an elevated, distinctive offering to the world of luxury home furnishings.
Federico Contigiani, President of Hickory Chair, explored the vast archive in the Liberty Design House. Exploring the archive with Liberty’s inhouse archivist and design teams, distinguished patterns were selected to create this special collection of fabrics. In addition, an elegant velvet or linen from Liberty was chosen as the perfect complement for each specific pattern. Lastly, the color palette for each design was selected to complement Hickory Chair’s existing textile offering to delight its loyal customers. “It has been an honor to partner with Liberty,” shares Contigiani. He continues, “As we are a trusted source to the design trade, it is and has always been our mission to provide interior designers and their clients not only luxurious bench-made furnishings but also be a destination for inspiration and fashion for the home. We believe this beautiful collection of bespoke Liberty fabrics expand this position while elegantly complementing both our existing Hickory Chair textile and extensive furniture assortment.”
“From our initial meeting with Federico and the Hickory Chair team to seeing Liberty's interior fabrics brought to life on beautifully crafted silhouettes, it has been an inspiring project,” shares Genevieve Bennett, Head of Design, Liberty Interiors. “Creating specifically for the American market, our design team worked to carefully reimagine beloved prints in exciting new colorways exclusively for Hickory Chair. This partnership honors Liberty's 150 years of heritage, while celebrating the enduring synergy between timeless textiles and distinguished craftsmanship."

Suzanne Kasler Interiors
Atlanta

For over twenty years, Atlanta designer Suzanne Kasler has created warm, inviting environments that strike a balance between elegant, traditional design and practical comfort. She is known for her love of all things French and brings a fresh mix of Continental flavor and classic style to her interiors. By mixing both antiques and modern pieces, she creates environments that are timeless, sophisticated, and, most importantly, livable. Her passion for perfection and detail is consistent with Hickory Chair’s tradition of personalized home furnishings. Throughout the sophisticated collection, architectural elements are highlighted with modern details and clean lines for an easy, fresh aesthetic.
"It is hard to believe that it has been sixteen years since my first collection with Hickory Chair. From the beginning, our partnership has been a success and I am so proud that the collection continues to remain relevant to designers and their projects. This enduring appeal comes from my passion for designing pieces that are versatile and really allow designers to make them their own.
The collection carries a distinctly French influence with a modern sensibility. My travels to Europe have always inspired my interiors and product designs. During my visit to Bruges, Belgium, last year, I loved the timeless design perspective and this influenced my next collection named the Bruges Collection. The simplicity of Belgium’s look inspired a new layer to my evolving collection. In addition, I have long drawn inspiration from Swedish antiques, bohemian influences, and the Paris Flea Market, as well as unique finds from Africa and in America."
Suzanne’s award-winning work has been captured in four books published with Rizzoli: Inspired Interiors, Timeless Style, Sophisticated Simplicity and most recently, Edited Style.

"By blending historical influence with modern sensibilities at the highest quality, my goal is to design timeless pieces that live comfortably and well for many, many years."

SUSAN HABLE
Hable Construction
Athens & Corsicana
Since the fall of 2010, Hickory Chair and Susan Hable have collaborated to bring a wide array of distinctive products to our company's assortment. The Hable® for Hickory Chair fabric collection was originally introduced at the October 2010 market as the furniture industry’s first exclusive textile collection by a furniture manufacturer. In 2015, an interior furniture collection was introduced. In the fall of 2023, Hickory Chair collaborated with Hable to introduce the company's first outdoor furniture collection. World travel, cross-cultural inspiration, contemporary art, and antique modernist furniture all contribute to the aesthetic of this collection.
While inventive and artistic upholstered furniture designs were to be expected, the expansive Hable collection spans modern bedroom, dining room and living room designs with a decidedly global point of view that sit as comfortably in a traditional setting as they do in a modern home or an informal city loft. Inspiration for the new collection was taken from many geographic areas as well as eras where artisans created iconic new forms.
Hickory Chair has incorporated her inspiration into developing products that will allow a customer to create their own paradise through the Hable® Outdoor Collection. Susan's vision is that the pieces from the metal, woven and teak collections can be mixed in an outdoor space to create a very personal look. Focusing on comfort, shape, material, and finishes, Hable's outdoor collection strives to allow a paradise that will bring joy from beauty, comfort, and individuality. These products will lend themselves into each of the unique environments our clientele chooses as their sanctuary.
Her eye for detail and clear vision has allowed our talented team to continue to create exciting new products for her indoor and outdoor collections. Her passion for American craftsmanship – both in her textiles and our furniture collection – make for the perfect partnership as over 90% of Hickory Chair’s entire product offering is made in America.

KKim Scodro Interiors Chicago
im Scodro Interiors is a boutique luxury interior design studio with offices in Chicago and Georgia. Kim believes that collaboration is our everything. We, my talented team and I, work together as a team closely with each client to create spaces that are timeless and refined, yet tastefully current. We try to always create a bespoke experience for our clients. This begins with taking the time to really get to know our clients, through the design process, and providing realistic expectations including scheduling. We know there is no place more personal than your own home. We encourage our clients to share how they want to live and feel in each space of the home. By incorporating their unique personalities, styles and interests, it is what gives a home soul and makes a room come alive. It is an incredible feeling to see our clients’ faces light up when they walk into their homes. Time and again, we see how profoundly a person’s surroundings can affect how they feel. We believe that your home should make you happyevery time you walk in the door. Our biggest compliment at the end of a project is when a client tells us, “This feels just like us.”
We recently completed a home for a young family. They loved classic elements but wanted a happy, cheerful home filled with personality. This included spending time with each of the children to create their spaces. Our goal was to have lots of color and warmth all while maintaining a sense of elegance. Nothing in this house was off limits, and as a result, the home is as glamorous as our clients that live there. Working with our client and talented team, every detail in each room was studied, debated and finalized by keeping in mind the smallest detail. The use of passementerie was highly encouraged by our client along with custom colors and beautiful details at every turn.
We were able to use many of our favorite vendors for this client’s home. Wallcoverings by Gracie®, DeGournay®, Phillip Jeffries® and Lee Jofa® provided amazing patterns and color palettes. We chose fabrics from Cowtan and Tout, ® Scalamandre®, Brunschwig and Fils®, Samuel and Sons®, Holland and Sherry® and Kravet®. We commissioned paintings by various artists and framed them in antique frames.
KIM SCODRO

"Our client wished for classic elegance. The color palette, silver leaf and Gracie wallpaper was the perfect solution for their dining room." - KIM SCODRO

"Hickory Chair is always up for a challenge, like the hand-decoration on these gorgeous Sofia Stools."
- KIM SCODRO
Custom furniture was a delight to create with Hickory Chair®, Dennis and Leen®, Minton Spidell® and Ebanista®. We also love collaborating with local custom workrooms for one-of-akind pieces of furniture. In addition to creating custom furniture, we chose antiques. We love using 1st Dibs® for sourcing antiques for our clients. We traveled to France to shop the amazing Paris flea markets. We found a few perfect pieces that we brought back with us for this client.
For this client as well as others, we enjoy personalizing pieces for their home. As stated, we want our client to experience that “this feels like them.” The use of custom finishes, hand decoration, decorative skirt treatments, COM fabrics and trims allow us to create a very personal sanctuary for our clients. After all, this is why a client wants to work with a designer and their team. To that point, we love working with companies that take things to the next level. Hickory Chair is always up for a challenge, like the hand-decoration on gorgeous Sofia Stools. They created a match panel Benjamin Moore® lilac lacquered paint and hand-striping in a light gold with antiqued rub through for the Choate Dining Table that perfectly complemented the Gracie wallpaper.
We had a great experience working with the Hickory Chair workroom on our custom pieces. Throughout the process there was active communication every step of the way. With our professional customer service and sales representative support, we felt like we had the whole factory only to ourselves.
In 2013, I had the opportunity to visit Hickory Chair with my team. Their training program armed us not only with confidence in quality and service, but also awareness of what their talented artisans and craftspeople could do to help us create special pieces for our clients. There are so many things that come to mind when I hear the name Hickory Chair. Quality is probably the most important thing we talk about with our clients. Hickory Chair’s quality is second to none. The attention to detail and the craftsmanship is so honorable, especially in this “fast fashion” world we are part of now.
On a personal note, I am beyond honored to be part of the Hickory Chair family. The collection that I have created for the company has grown over the years and I could not be happier with the support that I receive all across the board. I absolutely loved meeting the team that works in the factory creating each piece, from the millwork to the seamstresses - the level of talent is deep. People like to talk about community or family but Hickory Chair goes beyond talk. This company lives it at every level in their commitment to those that call Hickory Chair their work family. There is no hierarchy in this family, everyone’s job is equally important in bringing gorgeous furniture to life.

"Our biggest compliment at the end of a project is when a client tells us, “This feels just like us."-

HIMES GOMEZ Gomez Associates

Mariette Himes Gomez’s interiors reflect her own sensibility—open, warm, and grounded in practicality, yet defying easy categorization. Whether designing interiors, furniture, or tabletop collections, she consistently achieved a sense of balance, tranquility, and thoughtful refinement. Her work has always been rooted in classic modernism, elevated by an effortless blend of luxury and comfort.
“I modernize the classics and classicize the modern,” says Mariette, a thoughtful advocate for blending periods to achieve timelessness. She simplified rooms to express a modern sensibility and gave each object the space to be appreciated and to evolve. For Mariette, the most successful rooms quietly tell a story—offering a personal sanctuary of calm and inviting ongoing, subtle discovery. An accomplished author, lecturer, and teacher, she resisted allegiance to any single style. Instead, her design philosophy was rooted in the architectural character of a space and guided by her intuitive grasp of scale, proportion, color, light, and material. Working from a geometric grid, she created layered compositions and a harmonious flow from room to room. The result was a series of refined sensory experiences—an ever-unfolding arc of visual and spatial transcendence.
Mariette’s exceptional contributions to the field have earned her numerous accolades over the years including Architectural Digest,Elle Décor and House Beautiful. Her work has been widely published in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Traditional Home, Town & Country, and The New York Times.
Mariette is the author of three celebrated books: Rooms – Creating Luxurious, Livable Spaces (HarperCollins, 2003), Houses — Inside and Out (Collins/Design, 2007), and Apartments (HarperCollins, 2010). Her distinguished career has earned her some of the industry’s highest honors. In 2011, she received the ASID Designer of Distinction Award, the American Society of Interior Designers’ most prestigious accolade. In 2014, she was named the inaugural recipient of the Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York School of Interior Design.
Mariette is retired but her many important contributions have forever enhanced and inspired the design world. Hickory Chair proudly manufacturers timeless pieces from her furniture collection.
