MUSIC DIRECTOR American conductor, Andrew Neer, is known for his dynamic and expressive conducting style and for a passionate vision on and off the podium. Now concluding his fourth season as the music director of the MSO, he curates concert experiences woven together by an “inner thread”—a unifying theme designed to connect the inner being of the music. In his programming, he often places new works alongside established masterworks, creating a thoughtful dialogue that reveals how the same inspiration frequently moves composers across centuries. Andrew believes that a 21st-century orchestra is not just an institution to preserve art, but a living entity that creates it anew in every performance, serving as a place where people of all backgrounds can connect through the fabric of music. Andrew has lived in Michigan (Macomb County) since 1991, and he is honored to be part of the legacy of the Macomb Symphony Orchestra family. He has been honored to lead orchestras, choruses, and conduct operas in and around Metropolitan Detroit. He is committed to championing the music of our time, frequently leading premieres and collaborating with living composers such as Norah Duncan IV. In 2017, he embarked on an international conducting career appearing as a guest conductor but has focused his energy on Metropolitan Detroit and the support of our fabulous array of local and regional artists. Andrew loved working with our artist in residence Amber Rogers (Soprano) and, Andrew Sords, world-class violinist. Andrew holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting from the worldrenowned University of Michigan. He is honored to have studied with Kenneth Kiesler and all the marvelous faculty at UofM. He attended Central Michigan University studying Composition, Trumpet and Music Theatre Performance. He earned two Master of Music degrees in Composition and Conducting, respectively, from Wayne State University. In addition to the Macomb Symphony Orchestra, Andrew is honored to serve as Music Director/Conductor of Warren Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Sono, and as Artistic Director/Conductor of Oakland Choral Society. In his time away from the orchestras, he makes the most of spending time with his wife, Mary Lynn, and son Eli. He is forever thankful for the enduring support from his family! 2025-2026 Season | 5
JUDITH TEASDLE
CONCERTMASTER Violinist Judith Teasdle is a native of Pontiac, Michigan and a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy. She received a Bachelor’s in Music from Oakland University, where she studied with Lafayette String Quartet members Ann Elliott-Goldschmid and Joanna Hood. She went on to graduate studies with Dr. Walter Verdehr at Michigan State University, earning a Master’s in Violin Performance. She is the Principal 2nd Violin of the Saginaw Bay Orchestra, Oakland Symphony Orchestra and the Warren Symphony. She also performs regularly with the Detroit Opera, Ann Arbor Symphony, Flint Symphony and Lansing Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Detroit Jazz Festival Orchestra. Her recording credits include Aretha Franklin, De La Soul, Kem, American Idol finalist Jena Irene, Shaun Martin
and avant-garde rock group The Sursiks. Judith has also shared the stage with a wide variety of artists, including The Who, Glen Campbell, The Moody Blues, Robert Goulet, Dave Brubeck, Victor Borge, Sarah Brightman, Richard Marx and Disturbed. A resident of Detroit, Michigan, Judith has been a founding member of several string quartets and maintains an active teaching studio.

PERSONNEL MANAGER SHERRI MARTTILA Sherri Marttila has been an avid violinist since the age of nine. She has completed educational rigors at Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Congress of Strings (New York), and the University of Michigan. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from the University of Michigan. Sherri is the Concertmaster for the Oakland Symphony and Warren Symphony and Associate Concertmaster for the Macomb Symphony. She also performs in the violin section with the Traverse City Philharmonic, Saginaw Bay Symphony, Lansing Symphony, Flint Symphony, Midland Symphony, Gaylord Symphony and Detroit Opera Theater. Along with her performing responsibilities, she is the
Orchestra Personnel Manager for the Oakland Symphony, the Warren Symphony, and the Macomb Symphony.
Sherri has worked with incredible artists including Andrea Bocelli, Aretha Franklin, John Tesh, Sandi Patty, Michael W. Smith, Johnny Mathis, Anne Murray, Alexander Zonjic, Regis Philbin, Harry Connick Jr., Josh Groban, Sarah McLachlan, Amy Grant, Sarah Brightman and wonderful musical groups like The Who, The Eagles, The Temptations, The Ten Tenors, Il Divo, Il Volo, Mannheim Steamroller, Citizen Zero, Warner Brother Symphony, Wimborne Symphony, The Tea Party, and the Celtic Women. She also performed with the Game of Thrones concert series with the Composer and Director, Ramin Djawdi. SOLOISTS | MAY 31, 2026 JOAN BELGRAVE DETROIT JAZZ QUEEN
Joan Belgrave, Detroit Jazz Queen, is a two-time Grammy considered vocalist, songwriter, Music and Film producer. Joan is a multiple Detroit Music Award winner. In 2023 she joined the legendary WJZZ Detroit Jazz Radio station as an On Air Radio &TV Host. Her weekly WJZZ radio show (Monday’s from 5-8pm EST) “GROOVIN with JOAN BELGRAVE” is a “ STAND OUT”. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as she shares music from her personal jazz legend colleagues as well as the music of today. An example of her music production prowess is that of a sold-out New York Winter Jazz Festival event featuring herself, alongside jazz legends, Ron Carter, Sheila Jordan, Louis Hayes, Karriem Riggins, Robert Hurst, Johnny O’Neal and more.
Joan is the consummate vocalist, equally adept with big band, blues, standards, gospel and contemporary R&B. While holding fans and critics rapt at prestigious venues like the Detroit Opera House, GEM Theatre, NJPAC (NJ) Brooklyn Academy of Music Theatre (NY), Dizzy’s Club (60th & Broadway, NY) The Metropolitan Room (NY), Catalina’s (Los Angeles), the Jazz Standard (Chicago) Switzerland, Paris, and the UK. “Belgrave’s voice is so soothing and sexy, she could give a pitbull goose bumps”… Detroit Metro Times raved, while jazzREVIEW called her “a class act and a beautiful talent.” Broadway Today calls her “Dynamic… with a Lush voice”. SOULTRACKS says of her voice “beautiful and lush” and awarded her “Oooo Boy” project as top 100 songs for 2023. “The artist herself explains it best: “I love singing with every fiber of my body.” The trajectory Joan has followed from singing gospel in the Baptist church as a young girl and entertaining family friends in Michigan to becoming a critically acclaimed performer who’s delighted sold-out crowds across the globe traces a fascinating course. Joan’s mother, who also sang, introduced her to U of M classical baritone, Dr. Willis Patterson who took her under his wing and classically trained her voice. Moving to Hollywood, Joan pursued a professional singing career but soon shelved her musical aspirations in order to marry and raise her three children. By the late-’90s, Joan had once again fully immersed herself in music. She began writing songs and recorded Emotions Blue (1998), her tribute to Billie Holiday. “I really related to her” she says. Joan’s chameleonic musicality fueled her follow-up Variations (2005). “It was a variety of me,” she explains about the album’s concept. “I had blues, gospel, jazz, and R&B going on there. I never want to limit myself because I’m a vocalist, period.” All of 2025-2026 Season | 9
these projects were recorded in California, once she felt she had given her children a “solid foundation. Relocating back to Michigan, Joan met legendary trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. The couple wed and released their first of two collaborations with New Orleans Preservation Hall legendary saxophonist Charlie Gabriel, You Don’t Know Me: A Tribute to New Orleans, Ray Charles, and the Great Ladies of Song (2007). The trio followed up with Marcus, Charlie, and Joan … Once Again (2009) where Joan’s voice duly complemented the superb musicality of the album’s two jazz masters. Joan resumed her solo career with Excitable (2009) She released Merry Christmas Baby (2014), recorded “Please Send Me Someone to Love” for Blue Note Records, Don Was, and ventured into techno with producer Carl Craig on Tribe’s “Where Am I” (2009). In between headlining the Detroit Intl Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Ontario Jazz Festival, Ascona Jazz Festival (Switzerland), and the annual Don Was Detroit All Star concert, she continued to produce her own shows, in addition to being a lead vocalist with the Motown Legends Gospel Choir. She produced a sold-out DIA tribute to her friend, the late Queen, Aretha Franklin and performed as a featured vocalist at Ms. Franklin’s Homegoing Concert held at Chene Park. She has composed all of the songs on her sixth solo project, “Oooo Boy” released in 2022 which was 2023 Grammy considered. The audio and video project was voted by SoulTracks as top 100 songs of 2022. The “Oooo Boy” project was up for five 2023 Detroit Music Awards, winning the award for “Outstanding Songwriter”. Whether onstage or in the studio, Jazz, Blues, Pop, R&B or Gospel, Joan Belgrave reaches listeners through a voice that holds a world of musical wonders. Her thrilling versatility and passion for music shines through every note she sings. “No matter what’s going on, the music is my savior,” she says. “It always has been.” Music takes Joan Belgrave to new heights. RONALD PERKINS Ronald Quinn Perkins Jr. is a Detroitbased bass-baritone and music educator whose work spans orchestral, choral, and operatic repertoire. He has appeared as a soloist with ensembles throughout the Metro Detroit area and is recognized for a voice noted for its warmth, clarity, and musical sensitivity. Perkins’ performance experience includes operatic and concert repertoire ranging from Mozart, Verdi, and Monteverdi to Britten and American song, with roles such
as Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Pistola (Falstaff), Seneca (L’incoronazione di Poppea), and Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni). His choral-orchestral work includes bass solo appearances in large-scale works such as Handel’s Messiah, as well as collaborations with university, civic, and community ensembles. In addition to his performance career, Perkins is an educator, arts leader, and education policy fellow who serves as a music teacher, teacher mentor, and curriculum writer for the Detroit Public Schools Community District. He holds degrees in Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, where he studied with Daniel Washington, and continues to balance performance, teaching, and arts leadership with a focus on culturally responsive pedagogy and equitable access to the arts.

AMBER ROGERS
A Washington DC native, Amber Rogers is quickly becoming a highly coveted soprano voice. Amber’s summer season will include attending Music Academy of the West as a 2025 Lehrer Vocal Institute Fellow, while at Music Academy Amber will cover Donna Elvira Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Amber will head to MetroDetroit for the 2025-2026 season as the Artist in Residence for the Macomb Symphony where she will sing world premieres and many exciting concerts with the symphony. This past May Amber was asked to sing in the Gateways Music Festival tour where she sang recitals of all African American works at the Eastman School of Music and Carnegie Hall. She
recently completed her Master’s degree at the University of Michigan studying with Caitlin Lynch and Dr. Louise Toppin. Amber completed her undergraduate studies at Oberlin Conservatory where she studied with Timothy LeFebvre and Marlene Rosen.
At Michigan, Amber sang Gretel in Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel, and Fiordiligi from Mozart’s Così fan tutte, each directed by Metropolitan Opera visionary, Gregory Keller. Prior to these, she also sang Nella in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi directed by Mo Zhou and conducted by Kirk Severston. Amber was a Finalist in the 2023 University of Michigan Concerto Competition, was named the 2024 National Scholarship Winner for the NANM competition, as well as winning first place in the 2024 George Shirley competition college division.

NORAH DUNCAN IV
Journey: from Slavery to Freedom is the product of a yearlong sabbatical supported by the 2024 Wayne State University Murray E. Jackson Scholar in the Arts Award of which the composer was the recipient. Based on nine Spirituals, it depicts the pathos experienced by enslaved and displaced African people, their struggle to find the strength to survive the most deplorable conditions imaginable, and to hope for the human dignity which comes with freedom.
This musical journey begins with “Let My People Go” (“Go Down Moses”), in which the slaves are represented as the Israelites in exodus. Moses represents a plea for freedom. “Watch and Pray” is a lament in which enslaved children asks, “Is master going to sell us tomorrow.” We are reminded of a consequence of slavery: the destruction of the family unit. “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” is a lament, which additionally reminds us of the separation of children from their parents and from their homes in Africa. “Deep River” exemplifies the journey to freedom by “crossing over Jordan.” Despite the struggles of slavery, hope and faith remain, as expressed in the spiritual “My Soul is Anchored in the Lord”. “Changed My Name” connotes a willingness to reject one’s pass to embrace the uncertainties and differentness of freedom. “Slav’ry Chain” clearly expresses the joy of liberation. “I Am Seeking for a City” expresses the hope for a better tomorrow. Finally, “Great Day/O Freedom” is celebration of freedom and a statement of resolve in which there is no going back: “and before I be a slave, I’ll be buried in my grave and go home to my Lord and be free.” Ultimately, this work is about human dignity. All human life must be valued, regardless of race, belief, nationality, or sexual orientation. I took songs from the darkest moments of our country’s history as reminders of a past we cannot forget, so that it may not be repeated anywhere in the world. “Society as a whole must respect, defend and promote the dignity of every person, at every moment, and in every condition of that person’s life.” (John Paul II) 16 | macombsymphony.org
