No Bah Humbugs Here!

It’s no secret that money makes the world go round (or so they say), and particularly at this festive time of year, everyone is certainly desperate to stretch those last few pennies as far as they can go. And whilst this might seem like something we all simply apply to our Christmas shopping, the Scrooges of the world can certainly pop up in construction too.

The trouble is, that money saving often leads to cut corners. And I’m sure I don’t need to remind you all of the numerous safety risks that scrimping can create. So then, how do we actually make business cost effective whilst averting potential crisis.

It’s simple! We have to be smart about it.

That’s what this issue is all about. Finding you the most bang for your buck! Whether its buying, hiring or retiring machinery, December’s issue gives you the low down on how to do exactly that. And not only the how, but the when. Time is of the essence, dear reader, and as the clock ticks away the moments of 2025, it’s time to make the most out of these last few days of the year.

Or, if you didn’t sit back and relax with a cup of cocoa and read this issue over Christmas, you’re making a cracking start to the new year by going into it with money on your mind. Good for you! What a clever little sausage!

AVANT TECNO HOSTS MULTI-DEALERSHIP TRAINING

Avant Tecno recently brought Technical Engineers from all of its UK dealerships together for a unique opportunity at the company’s global headquarters in Ylöjärvi, Finland. Over three intensive days, the group received exclusive training directly from the team behind Avant’s industry-leading innovation.

The trip began early on a Monday morning, departing Heathrow for Helsinki before travelling north to Avant’s state-ofthe-art manufacturing hub. Far more than a standard factory tour, this was a multidealership technical training programme designed to deepen product knowledge, strengthen aftersales expertise, and build lasting connections across the Avant network.

Throughout the visit, engineers gained invaluable insight into both the latest advancements coming out of the factory and the brand’s rich engineering heritage. Hands-on sessions enabled attendees

to work closely with Avant’s expert trainers, share best practice, and learn alongside colleagues from across the UK and Ireland. The result was not only enhanced technical understanding but also a stronger sense of collaboration and community across the dealership network.

True to Finnish tradition, downtime offered its own memorable experiences. Evenings were spent enjoying great food, relaxing in the sauna and, of course, braving a refreshing plunge into the lake, giving the group a real taste of local culture.

This investment in its people reflects an exciting period of growth for Avant Tecno UK. With its new, state-of-the-art UK headquarters opening last year, the business continues to strengthen its support for dealers and customers alike.

The Finland training event marks another step forward in ensuring that every dealership engineer has the skills, knowledge, and confidence to deliver the

exceptional service Avant is known for. John Spencer, Sales and Marketing Director for Avant Tecno UK, described the trip as an important investment in both people and partnerships: “Our engineers are at the heart of the customer experience. This trip was all about giving them deeper, hands-on access to the machines and the people who build them. The shared learning, the conversations, and the relationships formed in Finland are just as valuable as the technical training itself. The knowledge they’ve brought back will directly enhance the support we offer customers across the UK and Ireland.”

BALFOUR BEATTY EMBRACE PIONEERING HYDROGEN-POWERED ENGINE CLEANTECH

Leading international infrastructure group, Balfour Beatty, has successfully completed an ‘engine carbon clean’ (ECC) trial on a Plasser and Theuer compact tamper, demonstrating the effectiveness of the technology in reducing carbon emissions and improving engine performance.

ECC is an innovative and patented ondemand hydrogen generator technology that cleans combustion engines internally by removing carbon build up. Hydrogen is piped into the air intake and the engine sucks in on demand what it needs –significantly improving fuel efficiency and reducing toxic emissions, including CO₂, CO, NOx, and N₂O.

Balfour Beatty is the first infrastructure company to apply this solution to railmounted plant as part of efforts to address Scope 1 emissions. The trial simulated a full year of usage aligning with typical maintenance cycles and saw a 15.79% reduction in emissions. Following the successful trial, the company is now aiming to roll out the ECC service across its entire tamper fleet.

George Chaplin, Investment & Innovation Manager at Balfour Beatty, says: “ECC is a simple and non-intrusive solution that fits seamlessly into our servicing schedules without disrupting workflows. By extending engine life, reducing maintenance requirements, and lowering fuel consumption, ECC delivers measurable carbon and costs savings

while minimising downtime – making it a smart, sustainable investment for our fleet.”

Ben Kattenhorn, CEO of Engine Carbon Clean (by Advanced Hydrogen Technologies), adds: “The technology is already proven on road vehicles with similar engine types, achieving fuel and CO₂ savings between 8-30%, but working with rail experts K2C Rail (and their partners 1stinrail, part of the industry leading RSK Group, who also support our technology) means the ECC team are also fully aware of rail procedures, so it’s a slick and BAU service. Rail is one of the sectors most under scrutiny, but ECC offers an immediate solution – also restoring engine efficiency and power, extending the lifespan of assets and fully aligning with the new ESG compliance requirements of the International Financial Reporting Standards mandate.”

Balfour Beatty Environmental Sustainability Manager, Jonathan Turner, and K2C Rail MD, Tony Kearns, explain ECC’s impact on Scope 1 and Scope 3 emissions further in this 90 second video: https://youtu.be/zY1WrdLtr8I

The ECC system generates an oxyhydrogen gas, on-demand, via simple tap water electrolysers, which is fed into the engine on demand. This cleans all of the engine, all the way to the DPF. It’s the reaction between the hydrogen, oxygen and heating process which ‘pops’ the carbon off from inside the engine including the pre-combustion parts.

The removal of the carbon build up inside the engine allows it to breathe –this in turn allows for better combustion, which means revolutions per minute (RPM) can return back to manufacturer’s recommended levels and optimal efficiency.

Hydrogen is a non-corrosive gas, plus no chemicals or harmful additives are used, there is no storage of compressed hydrogen involved, hydrogen isn’t forced of injected into the engine, plus there is no super heating of the engine to burn off the carbon.

As a modular system, it cleans any internal combustion engine - from a small generator to family car, LGVs & HGVs, a commercial boiler, heavy plant equipment, a locomotive or even a ship’s engine - just by increasing the number of electrolysers. As all combustible fuels create carbon, it works on any enginediesel and petrol, HVO, CNG, LNG and other biofuels.

ECC tracks CO₂ levels with an ISO calibrated emissions tester and records from baseline and at post fourth clean, which also indicates the vehicles fuel reduction at idle. Because CO₂ and fuel efficiency are linked, a measurable reduction in emissions and a decrease in fuel consumption will always follow.

THE ROKBAK RA30 VS RA40: WHICH DUMP TRUCK IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Whether working in quarries, infrastructure projects or large-scale earthworks, customers choosing between Rokbak’s robust RA30 and high-capacity RA40 can rely on expert guidance from the Scottish articulated hauler manufacturer’s product team.

While both models share Rokbak’s hallmark durability, product manager Graeme Blake details the differentiating factors when selecting the optimal truck for productivity and efficiency. So, which one will you choose?

Rokbak articulated haulers are delivering reliable performance on tough job sites around the world. With two models, the decision over which truck to use depends on the demands of the operation. The RA30 and RA40 share Rokbak’s core DNA of durability, simplicity and high uptime. Either model can suit almost any application. Which

mean the key differentiating factors lie in areas such as payload needs, site layout and the equipment already on site.

The RA30, with its 28 tonne (30.9 US ton) payload capacity, is the agile and versatile option. Its compact size and strong manoeuvrability make it well suited to tighter or more challenging environments such as steep quarry routes, smaller infrastructure works or sites where ground conditions frequently change.

The larger RA40 offers a 38 tonne (41.9 US ton) payload for operations where moving more material per cycle is the priority. It performs at its best in high-volume production environments such as open-pit mines, large quarries or earthmoving projects with wide haul roads and long travel distances. When a site can support bigger loading equipment, the RA40 helps customers maximise output by ensuring an efficient flow of materials and reducing the cost per tonne.

Matching the truck to the job

Aligning the hauler with the right excavator or loading tool is essential. A typical target is four to six passes to fill the truck body. If significantly more passes are required, the extra payload capacity is not being fully utilised and overall productivity compromised. Likewise, haul road width and site congestion should influence fleet selection. Compact European sites, such as those in France, commonly rely on RA30 trucks, while markets with larger working areas and extended operating hours, such as Indonesia, often favour the RA40.

Tough and tougher

Many customers choose to deploy mixed fleets, combining the nimble efficiency of the RA30 with the payload power of the RA40 to suit different areas of the same site.

Rokbak product manager Graeme Blake

The RA30 is the quiet workhorse that is always delivering results, while the RA40 is its tougher big brother, built to push productivity even further. Both offer strong operator comfort and control, with the RA30 equipped with true independent front suspension as standard.

More than hauling Rokbak articulated haulers are not limited to material movement. Both models have been adapted for specialist

roles such as water tankers for dust suppression and scraper units for surface stripping, demonstrating their versatility. Their durable build and dependable components ensure they can operate for long hours in demanding conditions where uptime is critical.

By working closely with customers to understand their requirements in detail, we’re ensuring that whether it’s the RA30, the RA40 or both, the right solution is always available.

WHY SMARTER OIL ANALYSIS IS ESSENTIAL FOR PROTECTING YOUR PLANT EQUIPMENT – AND WHY KLEENOIL DOES IT BETTER

In today’s demanding industrial environments, plant and heavy equipment represent some of the most valuable assets a company owns. Excavators, crushers, telehandlers, dozers, compactors, hydraulic systems, power units, and diesel-driven equipment all depend on a single lifeline: clean, healthy oil. When the oil begins to degrade, become contaminated, or lose its protective qualities, the entire machine is at risk. That is why oil analysis has become one of the most cost-effective forms of condition monitoring in modern industry.

However, while most laboratories provide data, very few provide understanding. This is where KLEENOIL sets a new industry standard.

Traditional labs generate results based on a single sample — numbers, graphs, and particle counts with little interpretation. For many operators and site managers, these reports can be confusing, overly technical, and difficult to apply to real-world operations. A report that may appear “critical” in a clean-room plastics facility might in fact be entirely normal for a quarry excavator working in dust, heat, and heavy load. Without context, measurements lose meaning.

KLEENOIL bridges this gap by offering oil analysis that is not only technically precise, but operationally relevant. We specialise in interpreting oil condition in the environment the machine is actually working in. Our team understands contamination pathways, filtration behaviour, hydraulic wear patterns, diesel-driven environments, and the difference between normal working dirt and genuine system distress. We translate complex laboratory data into clear, practical, actionable insights that operators can use instantly.

Our service goes far beyond a traditional lab result. Every sample is added to a machine-specific online flipbook history, giving clients a full lifecycle view of contamination trends, wear behaviour, filtration effectiveness, and environmental influence. This historical insight is key: machines rarely fail overnight — they fail over time.

Trend analysis reveals the early warning signs long before a pump, valve block, or hydraulic motor becomes a costly failure. With QR-coded asset access, engineers on-site can pull up the entire history of a machine in seconds.

What makes KLEENOIL different is simple: We treat oil analysis as asset protection, not paperwork. We recognise that every plant machine is an investment that must earn its keep — and unplanned downtime is the enemy of productivity. Clean oil means longer service intervals, fewer breakdowns, lower operating

temperatures, reduced component wear, and ultimately a more profitable fleet. By combining laboratory accuracy with real-world interpretation and intelligent trend monitoring, KLEENOIL delivers a level of clarity that no traditional lab offers. We don’t just test oil — we help protect machines, extend asset life, and put operators back in control of their equipment health.

In an industry where every hour counts, smarter oil analysis isn’t a luxury — it’s essential. And at KLEENOIL, it’s what we do best.

SAFETY ON A ‘BUDGET’ WITH THE XWATCH SS1BUDGET PRESSURE SHOULDN’T PUT SAFETY AT RISK

With the November Budget and businesses expecting continued pressure on operating costs, many plant hire firms and contractors are looking closely at where money is being spent. Safety remains a non-negotiable part of running a fleet, but it doesn’t have to come with a heavy price tag. The Xwatch SS1 – Simple Safe One – offers a practical way to keep machines protected without stretching budgets.

The SS1 is a no-nonsense angular motion limiter designed for a wide range of hydraulic plant. It provides basic height limitation on machines where the full sophistication of the XW Series isn’t needed. Operation is straightforward and fool-proof, giving operators clear,

predictable control. The control key can also be removed to set a permanent limit where sites or working environments require fixed restrictions.

By focusing on essential functionality rather than unnecessary extras, the SS1 provides an affordable route to compliance that suits everything from small contractors to busy hire fleets. It is also available as both a standard engineerinstalled system and a self-install option for competent plant fitters. The self-install route has become particularly valued by hire depots wanting to keep machines in circulation and avoid delays waiting for external support. The unit is supplied with clear guidance, and once fitted, it delivers the same proven performance expected across the Xwatch range.

The SS1 is already in day-to-day use across a variety of fleets. Grassform Plant Hire Ltd is one example. Director Mark Dunning explains its role on their machines: “The system reduces risks associated with working near overhead hazards, improving safety for personnel and equipment while keeping us compliant.” It is a straightforward endorsement from a company that relies on predictable, nononsense control on site.

Another example comes from Anglian Plant, which has been running Xwatch systems since moving to the brand in 2021. The SS1 is used on machines including its Kobelco SK230 excavators.

Managing Director Joe Paterson puts it plainly: “Safety is our primary focus; we wouldn’t be without Xwatch. Our clients have confidence in Anglian Plant, knowing we are proactive in best safety practices. Coupled with a liking for the very best customer experience possible and a modern fleet of machinery, we have all bases covered.”

As the industry prepares for whatever the November Budget brings, the SS1 stands out as a sensible option for upgrading safety without taking on unnecessary cost. It provides clear protection, practical installation choices, and dependable performance.

As Jemma Dycer-Hopkins, Sales and Operations Manager at Xwatch, adds: “Many of our customers are feeling the pressure of rising costs, and the Budget will only sharpen the focus on where money is being spent. The SS1 gives people a way to keep their machines safe and compliant without taking on unnecessary expense.”

The SS1 is, quite simply, safety on a budget — without cutting corners. To learn more about Xwatch, please visit: www.xwatch.co.uk

ENGINUITY LAUNCHES THE POLICY CENTRE TO STRENGTHEN SME INFLUENCE ACROSS UK MANUFACTURING

Anew Policy Centre for Supply Chain and SMEs has been launched to give smaller manufacturers a clearer and more consistent voice in national skills and industrial policy. As an Enginuity partner, the CEA welcomes the move, which supports long-standing priorities across the construction equipment sector.

The Policy Centre for Supply Chain and SMEs, powered by Enginuity, has been launched to give engineering and manufacturing SMEs a stronger and more consistent voice in national policy. As an Enginuity partner, the CEA welcomes this development, which aligns with many of the skills and supply-chain challenges raised across the construction equipment sector.

The Policy Centre brings SMEs, industry bodies, employers and government together to build a clearer understanding of the challenges smaller manufacturers face. It draws on data, research and direct engagement to ensure real industry experience is taken into account in skills and industrial policy. This should help support more practical

and grounded conversations with government, particularly around longstanding recruitment and training issues.

The Centre describes itself as impact driven and solution agnostic. Its early work links into wider discussions on the Advanced Manufacturing Plan, apprenticeship levy access, FE provision and ongoing investment in technical education. It is also gathering regular insight through its SME Snapshot survey, which tracks how smaller firms respond to economic and policy changes.

For the construction equipment sector, the launch of the Policy Centre signals a more coordinated and evidence-led approach to skills and supply-chain policy. It also creates a clearer route for SME experience to be recognised at national level.

Ann Watson, CEO of Enginuity, said: “SMEs are the lifeblood of the UK economy, yet their voices often struggle to cut through in the policy arena. Effective policy depends on honest engagement with the people who understand the challenges first hand, and too many SMEs feel they are not being heard. The Policy Centre has been

created to bring clarity, evidence and direction to that conversation. By drawing together SMEs, government and industry partners, we can support a stronger skills system and a more resilient supply chain.”

Viki Bell, CEO of the Construction Equipment Association, said: “The Policy Centre offers a welcome focus on the real pressures facing smaller manufacturers. Skills and supply-chain challenges continue to affect many businesses across our sector and having a clearer evidence base helps move the national conversation in a more practical direction. The construction equipment sector relies on a skilled and resilient supply chain, and this launch is a positive step towards ensuring SME experience is properly reflected in policy.”

VUE GROUP AND UK FORKS: WORKING TOGETHER TO CHAMPION HFR TECHNOLOGY

Construction sites remain challenging environments, pedestrian-machinery collisions represent one of the most persistent risks, and while traditional safety measures such as signage, segregated walkways, banksmen and training form essential foundations, incidents still occur. As sites grow more complex and machinery more powerful, the industry is seeking systems that can support their operators.

Human Form Recognition (HFR) technology is emerging as a significant development in this space. These systems identify when a person enters close proximity to plant machinery and alerts operators instantly, providing additional safety without replacing existing protocols.

Critics may question whether such technology is necessary, arguing that operator skill should suffice. However, the persistence of pedestrian-machinery incidents suggests that human perception alone faces limitations in fast-paced, high-pressure environments where visibility can be compromised and site conditions change daily. HFR systems are designed to complement, not replace, operator expertise.

Recent data from sites suggest the technology may be influencing behaviour significantly. Analysis from one national housebuilding company showed a 43% reduction in HFR alerts between early October and late November. Another site saw high-severity alerts from the eight

most frequently alerting machines drop by 47.3%. These reductions appear to reflect increased operator awareness and modified behaviour around machinery.

VUE, a company with 25 years of experience in camera and video telematics has partnered with UK Forks, a national telehandler rental provider and division of Vp plc, to deploy these systems across construction sites. The collaboration brings together VUE’s advanced AI camera technology with UK Forks’ operational expertise and nationwide fleet reach.

The HFR system uses advanced machine learning to identify people, obstacles and unsafe behaviours in real time, alerting operators instantly through clear visual and audio prompts. This level of support proves invaluable on sites where blind spots, tight access and constant movement heighten collision risk.

A standout example comes from UK Forks’ recent deployment with one of the UK’s leading independent housebuilders. On a busy residential development, HFR helped operators manage restricted visibility zones, significantly reducing near-miss incidents around pedestrian walkways and delivery routes. Site managers reported improved on-site behaviour when machines are moving, with workers showing greater reluctance to approach without operator authorisation. The external audible alerts proved particularly effective in changing habits around machinery.

The technology also delivers measurable operational benefits.

Fewer accidental impacts reduce repair costs and increase fleet availability, while clear footage enhances training, compliance, and incident resolution. UK Forks’ Operations Director Simon Brook noted that VUE’s collaborative approach and advanced technology enable delivery of higher health and safety standards across customer sites.

Concerns about alert fatigue, that operators might become desensitised to frequent warnings appear not to be borne out by early data. Instead, evidence indicates operators remain engaged as the technology reinforces situational awareness.

As the construction industry continues prioritising safety alongside efficiency, the integration of advanced technology with skilled operation and robust safety protocols offers measurable improvements. Whether HFR becomes standard practice will depend on continued performance data and broader industry adoption.

“Ultimately, this technology is helping make significant improvements across UK sites and we’re proud to be at the forefront of this,” Glen Mullins, Director at VUE.

ASSET FINANCE – YOUR NEXT OPTION FOR FUNDING?

Asset finance is, for many firms, a form of funding they have used for many years. Yet still, for others, it’s not something they know much about. In this article Close Brothers Asset Finance takes a closer look at the different products to help you understand why it could be the perfect option when considering your next purchase.

In short, asset finance is an alternative form of funding used by businesses to obtain the equipment they need to grow or access much-needed cash. Asset finance makes the otherwise unaffordable affordable because it gives businesses access to the equipment they need without incurring the cash flow disadvantage of an outright purchase. Agreements can also be customised to the business’s needs, with flexibility on both the term and repayment schedule. There are various products that come under the broad umbrella of asset finance with one of the key ones being Refinancing, which is a proven way to make your assets work for you and release cash back into the business.

How Refinance works

Refinancing uses the value of assets you already own to help your business. With Sale and HP Back – a type of refinancing – you sell your equipment to us, and we lend you the money you need to invest in your business.

You pay us back in line with what the equipment earns for you. Once you’re done paying us back, you own the equipment again.

This works whether you own the equipment outright or are already financing it with someone else.

Who is Refinancing for?

Refinancing is for anyone looking to unlock the value of their existing assets to support their business. Whether you own equipment outright or are financing it elsewhere, refinancing can provide a quick way to access funds for things like new equipment, improving cash flow, or other business needs. It’s a flexible option suitable for businesses of all sizes, including sole traders.

Benefits of Refinance

• Get more cash easily - Asset refinancing is a quick and simple way to get extra money for your business needs. You get to keep using the asset you put up as security.

• Pay over a longer time - We can take over your current financing deal with another company and extend the time you have to pay. The costs are fixed, so there won’t be any surprises while you’re repaying the loan.

• Choose what’s best for you - Use the cash injection for your business or buy other things you need. It’s more flexible than some other financing options.

• Decide quickly - Getting cash from your assets helps you make faster decisions when dealing with business contracts. Use the money for hiring people, buying new things, or expanding your workspace.

UNWRAP UNMATCHED AFTERMARKET PERFORMANCE IN 2026!

It was finally time for us to visit the Plant Parts team at their HQ in Suffolk – and we were not disappointed!

Over the last few months, you would have seen some exciting updates and news articles from them, and having spent many hours catching up at Hillhead, PlantWORX and other shows across the UK in the last year we were delighted to be able to visit their workshop, warehouse and offices in the heart of Suffolk.

Darren and Phil were welcomed by Claire and Alex of the Plant Parts marketing team who shared some exciting news for us to keep our eyes peeled for next year. In particular the fact that Plant Parts will be celebrating their 35th year! Plus, they will be welcoming delivery of their new state of the art GLOBALLY UNIQUE testing facility – The RIG.

“Arriving at our Suffolk site very soon, this bespoke rig, for the testing of Swing Drive and Final Drive Hydraulic Motors, will expand our repair capabilities enormously. Specially designed for our workshop, this new equipment will enable load testing of up to 132 KW increasing the services we offer in a way no other business like ours can.” David Finch – Business Development Manager.

The Tour

We were delighted to finally get to visit the team at Plant Parts after working with them for over a year. We were warmly greeted by Claire and Alex, who run marketing for the business, and immediately felt at home. During the day, we were shown around their impressive warehouse, which houses over 200,000 individual parts ready for dispatch— everything from final drives, swing drives, and hydraulic pumps to slew rings and more. It was fascinating to see the scale and organisation required to keep such a vast operation running smoothly.

Over lunch, we had the chance to chat about previous and upcoming shows and to learn a little about what they will be promoting in the new year, particularly The RIG—their cutting-edge testing facility. Hearing about their plans firsthand gave us a real insight into the innovative work happening behind the scenes.

Business Owner, Richard Finch, then joined us for a chat and explained the backstory behind his creation of the business back in the 80s which led to Plant Parts establishment in 1991.

‘It all started in a quiet corner of our family home, as many other businesses did back then – and still do now! 3 years later I was able to build an extension to give us more space, as my brother Bob had joined the business by then. By ‘93 we had outgrown all other options and decided to build our own units to include our workshop and warehouse facility. We are now spread over 4 units and still growing!”

He was particularly proud to tell us that the road the site is built on was named after his father, Clifford Finch, which highlighted the family roots and pride woven into the business. Finally, we were walked around the workshop and introduced to some of the engineers, who were demonstrating day-to-day repairs and inspections. It was brilliant to see the practical expertise in action and to understand more about the hands-on work that underpins the parts and services they work with daily. Something of such a scale is near enough unheard of in an independent family run business, but Plant Parts seem to carry it all with ease.

Overall, it was an incredibly insightful visit, and it was a pleasure to meet the team face-to-face and see the scale, professionalism, and passion behind Plant Parts!

A Royal Visit: In 2013, when Plant Parts won its 3rd consecutive Queen’s Award, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and the Queen’s first cousin, came to visit and present the award.

Backing the best: Early Sponsorship of Fabio Wardley.

Working with industry titans: Including close relationships with ZF Aftermarket, PMP, Rexroth and more.

Battling Brexit: “When Great Britain left the EU, it ended the free movement of goods from the UK to EU countries. That means that every single package that crosses the border is strictly checked and requires the correct documentation. With a large proportion of our customers being in the EU, it was vital we set to work on finding a solution. Our Customs warehouse and HMRC accreditation has provided the answer.” Alex Davey –Logistics Manager

Legacy premises: In 2003 we moved to own premises on Clifford Finch Way and a new purpose-built facility was commissioned.

“As a family business, servicing a global customer base for over 30 years demands staying true to our roots while continually embracing the technology and talent that push aftermarket performance to new heights.”

But why simply take our word for it? See for yourself in this incredible case study:

A 55-Year-Old Gearbox Still in Service:

The 1969 Repair Turning Heads in the Industry

It’s not every day a workshop is asked to repair a gearbox that first went into service the same year humans landed on the Moon. Yet that’s exactly what happened when a 1969 hydrostatic drive—still powering machinery more than half a century later—arrived for assessment.

This wasn’t just any piece of equipment. The gearbox was manufactured during a remarkable year in history: the Beatles were still dominating the charts, Concorde made its first test flight, and humanity took its first steps on the lunar surface. In the world of technology and machinery, 1969 feels like a lifetime ago—and that was reflected in the challenges this unit presented.

Imperial Components and Out-of-Production Parts

One of the most significant obstacles was the gearbox’s reliance on imperial measurements. Long before metrication became standard in the UK, almost every component of this 1969 unit was designed using inches and fractions rather than millimetres. For a modern repair team, that immediately rules out sourcing off-the-shelf replacements.

Where possible, the engineers restored the original shafts, carefully assessing wear and tolerances. But not every component could be salvaged. For the parts that were beyond saving, new ones had to be manufactured from scratch!

Using the remnants of the originals as a guide, each component was reverse-engineered—a process more commonly associated with vintage car restoration than industrial machinery.

The task required a combination of patience, precision, and a deep understanding of how 1960s engineering standards

differ from today’s. Every measurement had to be exact, every gear tooth replicated, and every fit checked to ensure the gearbox could handle modern operational stresses without compromising safety.

Precision Engineering in Action

With the original manufacturer long out of support, the team relied on modern machining techniques to recreate gears and components that hadn’t been produced in decades. The result was a fully operational gearbox, restored to the functionality it had when it first left the factory in 1969.

Notably, this approach also offered significant cost savings. By repairing rather than replacing the unit, the customer avoided the expense of sourcing a new gearbox—a move that saved approximately £5,000. Beyond finances, the repair preserved a piece of machinery with a proven track record of reliability, extending its operational life well into its sixth decade.

A Glimpse into the Longevity of Industrial Machinery

Gearboxes from the late 1960s are rarely expected to still be operating on modern job sites. Yet this example underscores the durability and craftsmanship of well-built equipment. At the same time, it highlights the unique challenges workshops face as older machinery remains in service: obsolete materials, outdated measurements, and limited technical documentation are all hurdles that modern engineers must overcome.

This 1969 gearbox—older than most of the workforce maintaining it (!)—stands as a testament both to the enduring quality of historic engineering and to the modern expertise required to keep such machines running.

For an industry that often focuses on the new and next, it’s a powerful reminder that sometimes the most interesting stories lie in the machinery that has already stood the test of time!

LIFE WITH LANA

It’s the perfect time for reflection, and what better person to reflect upon than the lovely Lana Edwards!

2025 is coming to a close, and with the New Year approaching fast, it’s inevitable that we all pause for reflection, to look back upon the year and think of our highs and lows. One of Plant Planet’s highlights is Lana Edwards, and our Life with Lana sections, and what a great year it’s been! Despite having her own fair share of ups and downs, like anyone would, it’s clear that Lana will be ending on a high. So, without further ado, let us dive into looking back on our time with Lana!

Let’s go back to the beginning of 2025…

Our first issue with Lana this year saw Managing Editor, Rebecca, discuss “all things workwear”. It seems almost stereotypical that two women were discussing clothes in a construction magazine, but when it comes to being on-site, workwear is extremely vital, providing personal protection alongside comfort, and making sure that the operators are kept safe. Leo Workwear does exactly that, whilst also making you look stylish on the job too!

Lana got the chance to trial some clothing from Leo Workwear, and it’s safe to say, she was impressed. The brand’s main goal is inclusivity, saying they want “Protection for Everybody”. They offer a huge range of options, and their clothing ensures the utmost durability and versatility. As explained by Leo’s Sales Executive, Luke, who said: “there’s no ‘one size fits all’. Everyone is an individual and that needs to be taken into account.”

Lana said they were an “absolutely fantastic fit”, and that Leo has done “such a wonderful job.” She even said in her article that she’d definitely wear their clothes in the future. After meeting up with her at PlantWorx and noticing the Leo Workwear logo on her trousers, I can confirm that Lana wasn’t lying!

Inspiring Lana talks about chasing dreams as we welcome in spring…

There’s nothing I love more than a bit of wisdom, and in the April issue, Life with Lana is far from short of it. Lana talks about chasing the dream and going for what you truly want in life. After growing up with machines galore and always being drawn to the construction industry, Lana wanted only one thing:

Her own machine...

When working for R O’Donnell, Lana was given her very own machine: Lady Lana the first. (Unfortunately, there isn’t a happy ending to this, as she lost Lady Lana when the business owner fell ill and the business

had to close.) Lana said: “Lady Lana was honestly some of the happiest times of my life. She was my dream machine, even with custom pink just for me. I adored her. Losing her was incredibly hard.”

However, despite the ending, Lana still hasn’t given up and deserves all the Lady Lana’s she can get her hands on! After all, Lana herself put it best: “I definitely think that everyone should know what they want and go after it. Life is too short to be unhappy all the time. It takes work to get there, that’s for sure, but with the right graft, everyone can find their own happiness.”

Good equipment really can make or break a job…

Summer came, and the big topic of this article was equipment! Lana really does love all things construction, and it’s so lovely to see how excited she gets over equipment, especially when it comes to Steelwrist. And when Lana, arguably one of the most skilled operators in the UK, really rates a brand or specific equipment, you know it’s going to be a stand out!

Lana said: “To be honest, I’ve believed in these buckets since I first tried one about 15 years ago. It took me all of 30 seconds to realise what an opportunity this kit would provide. And even now, at my age, I am embracing and enjoying learning new things. I always will.”

Getting

sick is normal! But Lana tries to ignore it…

Lana notoriously never takes a day off, not even when she’s ill. In August’s issue, Lana discussed the difficulties of sick leave in the world of construction, and the long-term effects it can

have on-site. As Becks put it, “she lives and breathes her work, her lifelong commitment to the demanding mistress that is construction work still going strong.”

Lana is incredibly strong-willed and hardworking, so it’s no surprise that she’s so used to powering through, but it’s also true that the construction industry needs to stop pushing their workers to their limits. Worker’s health must be prioritised! And Lana, you still must treat yourself to a day off!

PlantWorx: When Lana met Lorna…

PlantWorx 2025 was the show where I finally got to meet the famous Lana and spent the day with her at the show. It was the most insightful day, and I learned so much from her, giving me the perspective of someone who is on-site, deep in the construction trenches. And despite my aching feet after having done at least 15,000 steps, I couldn’t stop smiling, knowing I had enjoyed such a great day. Gaining an insight into her knowledge, and the respect she has gained, was an experience I shall never forget.

And it’s safe to say, Lana Edwards is a truly inspirational individual who I now consider as a friend.

What

a jam-packed year!

Phew! What an incredible year we’ve had with Lana! It’s been an honour to look back on the year we’ve had with her, to look at the good moments and to reflect on how far we’ve come. I think it’s fair to say, when it comes to Lana, we’ve had lots of highs!

CPA Gala Dinner

The Construction Plant-Hire Association (CPA) hosted almost 300 people at its very first Gala Dinner at the famous St George’s Hall in Liverpool. And yes, it was absolutely as good as it sounds!

November 6th, 2025 was a historic day for the CPA. Of course, they do a tremendous amount for the construction industry as well as regularly hosting fantastic events, but this one was something extra special. It wasn’t simply the glitz and glam of it all, but rather who it brought together and what it represented. The first of many to come, it is a shining example of hope and celebration in what is a turbulent time for our country.

So, let’s take a look at the delights this inaugural dinner had to offer!

Drinks Reception

From the first moment, it was clear that this Gala Dinner was something special. St George’s Hall was perfectly illuminated, a glowing beacon to welcome guests in from the chilly November night. Greeted at the door by the incomparable Lisa Collins and our wonderful MC for the night, Peter Haddock, guests had their photos snapped like celebrities before being ushered to the bar for a celebratory glass of bubbly. The Plant Planet team were delighted to be taken through to the Concert Room, where as the event media partner, we rubbed shoulders with all the fantastic sponsors who made the night possible:

Headline Sponsor: NOCN Group

Drinks Reception Sponsor: NPORS

Event Sponsors: Ainscough Crane Hire, Construction Equipment Association (CEA), Construction Hoist Interest Group (CHIG), The Hire Exchange, Instagrid, JCB and Point of Rental Software/Record 360. We even got a cheeky photo with Liverpool footballer John Barnes, who was the after-dinner speaker!

Dinner

The first look at the main St George’s Hall was enough to take your breath away. Tables were beautifully laid under a canopy of soft lights and the shining names of the sponsors, heralding everyone to their seats. Master of Ceremonies, Peter Haddock, kicked off the evening with his usual fervour and cheer, reminding all of us of the fantastic people that worked tirelessly to bring the event together. He then welcomed to the stage Brian Jones, CPA’s President, who talked about why the CPA had decided to host this gala. Innovation. Change. Hope.

These were the key themes of his speech, driving home the point that shaking things up was the best way to keep the construction industry thriving. In a room full of likeminded people, the sentiment was incredibly welcome. We were here to celebrate the triumphs and really make it ‘an unforgettable night of fine dining, legendary speakers, and industry celebration.’

Of course, the dinner was utterly spectacular, with 5 star Michelinexperienced chefs serving up a veritable feast for both the eyes and stomach. Drinks were flowing as readily as the conversation, and it was a delight to hear the deep discussions about the industry swirling all around us.

Entertainment

As the coffee and fudge was served, it was time to sit back and relax with a fascinating speech from legendary football star John Barnes. He took us on a journey through his illustrious past, regaling us with incredible stories of not only his tenure, but also the other big names of his day. Speaking specifically about his humble beginnings and how he was spotted by chance by someone in the know, he epitomised the beauty of Britain and the opportunities this country provides. He hammered home how anything is possible, and it’s the chances that we don’t take that we end up regretting. And, in this world of innovation and change, it was an incredibly important reminder. Even as ponderous rhetoric turned to frivolous cheers when we were treated to his famous rap which featured in the song World In Motion by New Order, it was hard not to be caught up in the delicious feeling of hope that his speech provided.

It perfectly introduced the best surprise of the evening.

CPA’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Mulholland, took to the stage to reveal something that none of us had been expecting. An awards ceremony. While the entire evening was very much about looking forward, Steven was quite right in surmising that ‘we can’t move forward without looking back at those that lay the groundwork.’

So, together we applauded the Industry Recognition Awards, a wholly inspiring surprise that gave us pause to thank the wonderful recipients for their contributions to the industry:

Trevor Jepson – City Lifting

Josh Llewellyn – Gaia Group

Peter Brown – CPA

Trevor Gamble – Gamble Group

Emerging from the honourees on stage was comedian Bobby Davro, who delighted everyone with a classic comedy set. We were treated to the vocal stylings of Bobby as well as several guests, including CPA’s own Katie Kelleher, providing us all with the chance to sing our hearts out to the likes of Billy Joel and Elvis Presley. Concluding with a song that included the flags of every country in the world, the applause was raucous, jubilant, and the best way to wind up the evening.

As the evening came to a close, the amazing beatbox band DUKE serenaded our final drinks of the evening, keeping the mood light and happy as we readied ourselves for bed, or further hilarity out on the town.

Plant Planet was lucky enough to get comment from the big wigs of the event:

CPA President Brian Jones: “It was a truly wonderful evening with friends and colleagues in great surroundings.”

CPA CEO Steve Mulholland: “We really are trying at CPA to pull the industry togetherthat’s what nights like this and the numerous events we have planned - both professional, social and a mix of the two - are all about. Ultimately at CPA we are here to provide a united voice supporting the sector, to do our bit to ensure that the voice of CPA and our members is heard for the good of the industry.”

The Master of Ceremonies Peter Haddock:

“As the first ever CPA Gala Dinner it was great to see so many members attending the event and having the opportunity to network and enjoy themselves. The surprise Special Recognition Awards showed just how much impact individuals have had on the sector and why this is a people industry. They were topped off by a standing ovation for President Brian Jones, who has worked tirelessly to promote the sector, supporting both individuals and member businesses. Being able to MC the event was also a big highlight of my career.”

Hope

Events like this are a real rarity. It’s not just about swapping the muddy work boots or business boardroom for opulence and elegance. It’s more that in a world plagued by negativity and problems, it was a breath of fresh air to see the good in what we all do. It was an amalgamation of incredible people, brought together to continue making the change we so desperately need. Without communication, without thought provoking insight and intrigue, and without the ability to bring them all together under one roof, we are truly lost. And yet, the Gala Dinner provided a relaxed, yet infinitely impressive setting, so that we could not only talk shop, but see the good work that has been, and is still being done.

“It was a truly wonderful evening with friends and colleagues in great surroundings.”

The Cost of Silence: Why Uptime is the Only Metric That Matters

An in-depth look at how Astrak is redefining the excavator attachment and undercarriage market through engineering rigour, logistical agility, and a refusal to compromise on quality.

In the construction and earthmoving sectors, silence is rarely golden. A silent machine on a Tuesday afternoon isn’t just an inconvenience; it is a haemorrhaging asset. Whether you are running a 0.8-tonne microexcavator in a tight urban utility trench or a 70-tonne heavy-duty excavator on a major infrastructure project, the mechanical heartbeat of that machine dictates the profitability of the project.

Since Astrak started in business more than 20 years ago, they have strived to meet customers’ requirements throughout the UK with highquality undercarriage parts. The bucket range is an exciting extension to this mission. Designed to suit the plant hire, civils, construction, and demolition sectors, the heavy-duty range of Geo XD buckets offers a premium answer to digging requirements.

Astrak has developed this range based on direct customer feedback, ensuring that as the range expands, the customer remains at the heart of what they do. Today, we delve into how this combination of technical innovation, and an unbeatable distribution model is setting a new standard for the UK trade.

The Geo XD Bucket Range: Disruption by Design

The excavator bucket is the business end of the machine. Yet, for too long, the market has treated buckets as a commodity, an afterthought where quality varies wildly. Using their supply chain expertise and long-standing manufacturing partnerships, Astrak’s bucket range offers an unparalleled level of availability, quality, and price competitiveness.

Why Geo XD?

The difference lies in the specification. Astrak has engineered these buckets to withstand high stress without compromising performance.

Key features across the range include:

• Heat Treated Steel

• Bucket Hooks

• Triple Welds

• Bolt-in Pins

• Bossed Hangers

• Heavy Duty Cutting Edges and Wear Strips

Astrak’s usual next-day delivery and high stock levels ensure you can have the right buckets at the right time, providing peace of mind that they will provide the correct solution for your requirement every time.

Tailored Solutions: 0.8T to 25T

Ditching Buckets

Astrak’s ditching buckets from 0.8 to 25 tonne all come with wear strips along the floor and back of the bucket to further extend the wear life. To add further protection, all ditching buckets come with a bolt-on cutting edge as standard. Crucially, from 5 tonne upwards, all ditching buckets come with two centre braces to reduce the chance of any twisting or misshaping under load.

Digging Buckets

From 8 tonne up to 25 tonne, all toothed digging buckets come with CAT J-Series bucket teeth, which are easy to source, easy to replace, and extremely hard-wearing. Recognising the need for versatility, all buckets also have the option of coming with a bolt-on blade instead of teeth perfect for utility work and groundworks. Furthermore, addressing a common site headache, the digging bucket range comes equipped with bucket hooks to help with safe and easy transportation around the site.

Riddle Buckets

To help with sorting and grading materials, Geo XD riddle buckets (available for 5 to 25-tonne machines) are perfect for separating rocks and soil.

Maximise Machine Uptime with GeoXD Buckets

Astrak supplies a range of heavy-duty excavator buckets for 0.8–26T machines, backed by the same quality and optimised stock that has supported customers with undercarriage parts and tracks for more than 20 years.

With next-day delivery, reliable build quality and excellent support from our team, we will continue to help maximise machine uptime as we head into 2026.

The Foundation of Movement: Undercarriage Excellence

While the bucket engages the ground, the undercarriage ensures the machine can get there. It is a well-known statistic that undercarriage components can account for a massive portion of a machine’s maintenance costs over its lifetime. Consequently, the quality of these parts is the single biggest variable in a fleet’s running costs.

Astrak’s offering is comprehensive, covering machines from 0.8T right up to 70T, providing both rubber and steel track solutions engineered to exceed OEM specifications.

Terratrack Plus: The Gold Standard in Rubber Tracks

For mini and midi excavators, rubber tracks are the standard. However, detracking (where the track slips off the idler or sprocket) and operator fatigue are notorious productivity killers.

Astrak’s TerraTrack Plus range addresses this head-on. These tracks are a combination of the world’s most advanced rubber track technologies. They feature an innovative

interlocking steel link design that physically prevents detracking issues, even when the machine is operating on demanding, uneven terrain.

Astrak’s Terratrack Plus range also features anti-vibration technology, ensuring a smoother ride for the operator. Internally, these tracks are built for longevity, utilising toughened steel links connected by continuously wound, anti-rust high-tensile steel cords. This continuous winding eliminates the weak points found in overlapping cord designs, drastically reducing the risk of snapping.

DuraTrack: Steel Chains for the Heavyweights (up to 70T)

For steel-tracked machines up to 70T, Astrak’s DuraTrack range offers a robust alternative to OEM parts. The durability is engineered directly into the metallurgy.

For excavators, the rails are heat-treated boron steel, hardened to 48-56RC. A key differentiator is the rail depth; DuraTrack rails are up to 10mm deeper than many other chains on the market. This isn’t just about resistance; it is about volume. Quite simply, there is more material to wear, meaning the chain lasts significantly longer before reaching its service limit.

The DuraLine plus Pad Revolution

A key differentiator in Astrak’s portfolio is the DuraLine rubber pad range. As urban infrastructure projects increase, the need to put heavy steel-tracked machines on sensitive surfaces grows.

It is important to note the performance of the premium DuraLine Plus range. Independent test results have shown DuraLine Plus pads to be 52% more durable than standard quality rubber pads. Available in Bolt-On, Clip-On, and Roadliner (Direct-to-Chain) styles, they offer a solution for everything from temporary road work to permanent rail conversions.

Service as a Product: The Astrak Difference

In a market often fragmented by generalist suppliers who are detached from the manufacturing process, Astrak stands apart through its intimate control of the supply chain. Unlike suppliers who are steps removed from the logistics chain, Astrak’s team are experts in the daily movement of parts across the globe.

Availability and Logistics

A broken bucket or a snapped track at 2 pm on a Tuesday is an emergency. Astrak’s logistics infrastructure is built to handle this pressure. With a finely tuned stock control programme, they ensure the parts you need are on the shelf.

Their promise is simple but powerful: place an order before 4:30 p.m., and stocked items are dispatched the same day for next-day delivery. This capability allows fleet managers to minimise downtime schedules effectively - if a part breaks today, the machine can be back operational by tomorrow morning.

Security of a Comprehensive Warranty

Perhaps the strongest signal of confidence Astrak places in its products is its warranty terms. In a market where wear parts are often sold with limited guarantees, Astrak offers marketleading protection:

• Rubber Tracks: 24 Months

• Excavator Chains: 18 Months

• Excavator Running Gear: 12 Months

• Dozer Undercarriage: 36 Months / 3000 Hours

• Hydraulics: 12 Months

This level of protection provides machine owners with predictable running costs and peace of mind that the cheaper upfront option often fails to provide.

Technical Expertise

Astrak does not employ mere order takers. Their sales staff are technically trained and experienced. This is crucial when dealing with the nuances of undercarriage wear or bucket selection. A customer might think they need a standard replacement, but an Astrak advisor might identify that a heavy-duty wear strip package or a specific chain pitch will prevent a repeat failure.

This expertise is backed by on-site services, including undercarriage inspections, Track Inspections, GET measuring and on-site fitting. Astrak delivers fully assembled track groups to the site and collects the old units, drastically reducing labour costs and downtime.

Conclusion: Partnering for Profitability

The construction industry is tightening. Margins are under pressure, and the tolerance for equipment failure is disappearing. In this landscape, the choice of a wear part supplier is a strategic business decision.

Astrak has moved beyond the traditional vendorcustomer relationship. By combining a product range that covers the full spectrum of tonnage from 0.8T to 70T with features designed to extend wear life, such as the reversible edges on their ditching buckets or the deeper rails on their steel chains - they directly impact the bottom line of their customers.

When you combine these “designed-to-disrupt” products with a logistics network capable of next-day delivery and the security of a comprehensive warranty, the proposition is compelling. Astrak is not just selling steel and rubber; they are selling certainty.

For the plant manager looking at a silent excavator and a ticking clock, Astrak offers the fastest, most reliable route back to productivity.

The National Civils Show 2026: Building Momentum for the UK’s Infrastructure Future

The National Civils Show will return to ExCeL London on 25–26 November 2026, and all the signs suggest it is rapidly becoming a fixture in the UK infrastructure calendar. Following the success of its launch edition, the show has firmly established itself as the country’s dedicated exhibition and conference for civil engineering, infrastructure, groundworks, and utilities professionals.

Momentum is already building. More than 40% of exhibition space has been allocated, with daily enquiries coming from companies that did not exhibit at the launch event but are keen to be involved in 2026. That early demand reflects a growing recognition that the civils sector needs a focused national platform—one that speaks directly to the people delivering the UK’s most critical infrastructure.

A Show Designed for Civils, Not Construction in General

What sets The National Civils Show apart is its clarity of purpose. This is not a broad, catch-all construction exhibition; it is a highly targeted environment created specifically for those working at the heart of infrastructure delivery. Major contractors, specialist subcontractors, engineers, consultants, local authorities, and asset owners come together under one roof—professionals responsible for planning, designing, building, and maintaining the systems the country depends on every day.

JCB was a notable exhibitor in the Drainage Show.
The organisers thanked several companies for their valuable support in getting the National Civils Show launched, namely National Highways, CIHT and CECA (Southern) Ltd.

That focus paid off at the launch show. Every visitor worked directly within civil construction or infrastructure and construction related roles, delivering exactly the audience exhibitors want. Feedback consistently highlighted the quality of conversations, the strength of leads, and the genuine business opportunities generated. In an increasingly crowded exhibition landscape, relevance has become the ultimate currency—and The National Civils Show has made it its defining principle.

Learning from Success, Planning with Purpose

With the show now firmly established, planning for 2026 is already well underway. The organising team is drawing on detailed feedback from exhibitors, speakers, and visitors to refine the exhibition layout and develop a stronger, more technically focused conference programme. The aim is simple: to deliver even greater value through practical insight, meaningful connections, and content that reflects the real challenges facing civils professionals.

New technical and specialist conference streams are being developed for 2026, covering areas such as structural analysis and geotechnical principles, environmental and building regulations, surveying and land development, CAD and BIM, advanced engineering software, and environmental sustainability. As the industry evolves, continuous learning and upskilling are no longer optional—and the show is positioning itself as a key forum for that development.

Why London Makes Sense for a National Event

While The National Civils Show is a national event, London’s ExCeL venue is a strategic choice. The capital and wider South East continue to attract the highest levels of infrastructure investment in the UK, hosting projects of unparalleled scale, complexity, and longevity.

Major schemes such as the Lower Thames Crossing, HS2 London Approaches and Old Oak Common, the Thames Tideway Tunnel, Silvertown Tunnel, East West Rail, and extensive Network Rail enhancement programmes represent billions of pounds of investment and decades of ongoing work. Added to this are vital flood defence, coastal protection, and climate resilience schemes protecting communities and transport networks.

Together, these projects generate sustained demand for materials, plant, services, innovation, and skilled professionals across the entire civils supply chain—making London an ideal backdrop for a national industry gathering.

The Economic Importance of Civils

Civil engineering underpins the UK economy. Of the construction industry’s £110 billion annual contribution, civils accounts for an estimated £50–60 billion. Transport, utilities, flood protection, energy, digital connectivity, and regeneration all depend on robust infrastructure.

As the UK confronts climate change, population growth, ageing assets, and the transition to net zero, civil engineering will be central to delivering solutions that are safe, resilient, and sustainable. Few sectors have such a direct impact on economic growth and quality of life—and few need a dedicated national platform as much.

A Guaranteed Relevant Audience

In an era where many exhibitions struggle with diluted audiences, The National Civils Show offers exhibitors a rare guarantee: every visitor is a potential customer. Attendees are drawn exclusively from civil engineering, infrastructure, groundworks, drainage, flood management, and SuDS disciplines.

The show’s co-location with the National Drainage & Floodex Show further strengthens this proposition, creating a powerful infrastructure hub while maintaining a clearly defined civils audience. In 2026, ExCeL will be a hive of construction activity, with multiple construction-related shows running concurrently—collectively forming what could be the largest annual construction gathering in the UK, and potentially one of the largest in Europe outside of the major bi- and triennial expos.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Launching a new live event is always a learning curve, and the organisers are clear that 2026 will build on those early lessons. More technical depth, more specialist content, and a refined visitor experience are all part of the plan. The result will be a show that not only reflects where the civils industry is today, but also where it is heading.

Book Your Stand for 2026

With strong demand already evident and space filling fast, early booking is strongly recommended. The National Civils Show 2026 offers exhibitors direct access to a highly targeted, decision-making audience at a time of sustained investment across UK infrastructure.

For suppliers of materials, equipment, plant, software, services, or specialist expertise, it provides a powerful platform to showcase solutions, generate high-quality leads, and build lasting relationships across the civils sector.

The rental industry is moving at a faster pace than ever. Your customers expect real-time updates, regulators demand complete traceability, and your management teams need instant, datadriven decisions. With information flowing through every stage of the hire process, success now depends on more than having the right digital tools – it depends on partnering with a technology provider that understands your world, shares your ambitions, and helps you stay one step ahead.

As the industry continues to evolve, MCS Rental Software is driving innovation forward. For over forty years, MCS has specialised in helping rental companies of every size achieve greater control, efficiency, and growth. Its longevity comes from one core commitment: listening carefully to users and continually refining its software to meet the realities of plant hire.

“We’ve always believed that innovation works best when it’s collaborative,” says Guy van der Knaap, Group CEO. “Our customers live and breathe hire every day, so their insights guide how we evolve our software and the problems we choose to solve.”

Turning insight into innovation

This partnership-driven approach has created a continuous cycle of improvement. Every product improvement starts with a challenge that you might recognise - simplifying quotes, improving fleet maintenance, automating finance workflows, or harnessing AI for faster insights. MCS works closely with rental teams worldwide to translate these needs into practical, intuitive features that make daily operations simpler and more effective.

At MCS, collaboration isn’t just something we talk about; it’s at the heart of how we work with you. We partner closely with hire businesses like yours to help you navigate change with confidence, combining expert advice, responsive support, and real-world understanding of the rental industry. When you work with MCS, you get more than software; you gain a trusted ally committed to helping you work smarter, grow faster, and achieve more every day.

Whether adopting emerging digital trends or addressing everyday operational challenges, MCS Rental Software continues to lead the way, combining industry expertise with technological innovation to give rental businesses the confidence to thrive in a changing world.

Harnessing data insights and AI for smarter decision making

The driving force behind MCS Rental Software’s innovation lies in its ability to listen, analyse, and respond with purpose. Every new development begins with real feedback from real users just like you, gathered through customer forums, global user days, and ongoing dialogue across the rental community.

A standout example is AI Query Assist, part of MCS’s expanding suite of artificial intelligence-driven tools. Designed to make information effortless, you simply ask a question in a chat box and receive instant summaries about your data. Within seconds, your fleet managers can check utilisation, drill into contract details, or verify billing and performance data, all without building a single report or relying on specialist technical skills.

“The core reason for this feature was to make information quick and easy to find,” explains Nick Thomson, Chief Sales Officer. “We know users need answers fast, so we created a tool that gives them direct, instant access to their datano complex report building, no waiting. It gives people instant clarity, turning information into better decisions.”

AI Query Assist represents more than a convenience tool; it’s part of a broader shift toward empowering every user to uncover insights at speed.

The enhanced eScan module enables plant rental companies to attach QR codes to each piece of equipment, providing users with instant access to up-to-date manuals, test certificates, and documentation that is fully synchronised with MCS Rental Software. Complementing this, the new AI Manual Assistance feature lets users chat directly with equipment manuals in their own language, helping them quickly find answers on setup, safety, and troubleshooting. This intelligent support tool reduces downtime, enhances user safety, and improves overall operational efficiency across plant rental operations.

This intelligence-led approach extends beyond in-house development. Through strategic data partnerships, such as MCS’s collaboration with Rouse Rental Insights, you can evaluate your performance against anonymised industry benchmarks. These comparisons provide valuable context, highlighting strengths, identifying opportunities, and helping your business understand its position within the broader market.

By delivering powerful tools and actionable intelligence, MCS Rental Software turns information into a genuine competitive advantage. The company’s vision is clear: to make data smarter, insights faster, and decision-making simpler, so your rental business can work with more confidence, clarity, and control.

Connecting your teams and your customers

Today’s plant hire business is a complex web of moving parts: staff, sites, assets, and customers, all of which need to stay in sync.

Innovation at MCS Rental Software isn’t just about how your data is processed; it’s about how your teams use it to collaborate, make decisions, and deliver exceptional service.

MCS’s developments, such as the Online Portal and the Activity Hub, ensure that everyone, from your yard team to your customer’s site manager, has access to accurate, real-time information.

The Online Portal provides your customers with instant visibility of hire contracts, invoices, and live job statuses. Internally, the Activity Hub provides your teams with an at-a-glance view of daily performance: a live, visual snapshot of jobs, contracts, and tasks across the business. It helps your staff stay aligned, spot potential issues early, and make proactive decisions. By ensuring that everyone has the same up-to-date information, it facilitates a more agile and informed approach to working.

MCS’s approach to product development is grounded in partnership. Each new feature or enhancement grows directly from user feedback and real operational challenges. Instead of standalone updates or one-off feature launches, every release is part of an ongoing dialogue with the MCS community, a continuous process that keeps the platform relevant and practical.

A SOFTWARE PARTNER THAT CARES

Making sense of the data deluge

Your rental business generates vast volumes of information every day, including workshop schedules, delivery records, equipment usage, and telematics data from the field. Yet, data alone doesn’t deliver value. The real power lies in transforming that continuous flow into clear, actionable insights that help teams act faster and make smarter decisions.

MCS Rental Software’s latest developments focus precisely on this goal: turning complex information into practical intelligence that drives performance.

Through close collaboration with telematics specialist Hiboo, MCS has created a seamless integration that unites telematics data from mixed equipment fleets, encompassing different manufacturers and devices, directly into the MCS platform. This comprehensive feed captures critical metrics, such as idle time, utilisation, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions, automatically bringing them together in one consistent view.

By delivering a real-time picture of fleet activity, this integrated approach enables you to analyse performance, identify inefficiencies, and make informed decisions without switching between multiple systems. It also helps your teams work more collaboratively, reducing unnecessary internal communication and allowing everyone to focus on improving customer service.

As Group CEO Guy van der Knaap explains, “Our partnership with Hiboo empowers users to get more from the data they already have. They can see what’s happening in real-time, reduce idle hours, and plan maintenance proactively. It’s not about collecting more data, it’s about using it intelligently.”

For your business, that means fewer delays, better asset utilisation, and measurable sustainability improvements. Operational teams gain the insight they need to balance

workloads and plan maintenance more effectively, while decision-makers can directly connect efficiency with profitability and environmental performance.

This collaboration also supports the growing demand for transparent carbon reporting across the rental industry. As sustainability becomes a key strategic priority, the combined strength of MCS Rental Software and Hiboo helps companies track emissions, monitor progress against targets, and demonstrate real environmental impact.

By linking operational performance, financial outcomes, and sustainability data in one intelligent system, MCS Rental Software helps rental companies transform what was once a data overload into a genuine competitive advantage, enabling smarter, cleaner, and more connected growth.

Proven results that drive your business forward

Technology matters most when it makes a real difference to your bottom line, helping you to work smarter, grow faster, and achieve more.

Across the plant hire sector, companies are using MCS Rental Software to simplify their day-to-day tasks, eliminate duplication, and create more connected ways of working.

Flexibility and scalability are often the reasons hire companies put their trust in MCS. As Harran Plant Hire explains, “We wanted a solution that was easy to use and could be tailored to suit our individual requirements. MCSrm gave us this, plus the scalability for future expansion.”

The same adaptability helped Nixon Hire achieve new levels of productivity and responsiveness: “Right from the word go, MCS-rm has increased our efficiency and agility. It’s an indispensable component of the Nixon Hire business.”

Even in highly specialised fields, the results speak for themselves. Container hire company Niesen found that by consolidating all its processes within one MCS system, it reduced administrative tasks, increased efficiency, and was able to scale operations without adding more staff.

As your business grows or evolves, you can rely on MCS to keep your operations running smoothly. With comprehensive reporting, real-time data visibility, and responsive customer service, you’ll always have the insight and backup you need to stay ahead of market demands and deliver great service to your customers.

For many hire companies, MCS Rental Software has become an essential part of their success story — a trusted partner that drives efficiency, productivity, and confidence at every stage of growth. By working closely with you and continuously developing its solutions around your needs, MCS helps your business work smarter, grow faster, and achieve more every day.

Shaping the digital future of rental

As your plant hire business navigates an increasingly data-driven and environmentally focused industry, MCS Rental Software is here to help you stay in control. The company’s innovation roadmap is guided by a simple belief: technology should empower your team, simplify operations, and support a sustainable future.

Every development from MCS, from AI-driven insights to telematics integration and customer collaboration tools, is designed to make your operations smoother and more connected. While automation continues to transform the industry, MCS recognises that success ultimately depends on your people. Its software complements your expertise, giving you faster access to information so your team can focus on growth, service, and customer relationships.

In today’s market, efficiency and sustainability go hand in hand. As your plant hire business responds to new customer expectations and environmental regulations, MCS technology provides the visibility to make informed, responsible decisions. Through telematics partnerships and automated carbon tracking, you can monitor equipment use, minimise downtime, plan greener fleets, and align your operations with modern sustainability goals. By turning utilisation and emissions data into a single picture of performance, you can make choices that strengthen both your business and the planet.

MCS also helps you meet compliance challenges, such as those related to Low Emission Zones. Dedicated functionality within MCS Rental Software lets you record emissions data, assign classification levels, and instantly check whether a machine is approved for use in specific zones. The system automatically flags potential issues, helping you stay compliant, avoid penalties, and maintain transparency with customers. This also enables smarter fleet planning, highlighting which assets meet compliance standards, where investment is needed, and how to reduce unnecessary emissions across operations.

“Every new feature starts with one question,” says Guy van der Knaap, Group CEO. “How will this make our customers’ lives easier? If it doesn’t create immediate, realworld value, it doesn’t go on the roadmap.”

That customer-first approach ensures MCS Rental Software evolves with your business. Whether you’re adapting to environmental change, implementing new technology, or expanding your operations, MCS continues to listen, collaborate, and deliver solutions that drive growth.

MCS Rental Software is not just building tools for today; it is helping shape the digital foundation for tomorrow’s rental business, one built on smarter decisions, stronger relationships, and sustainable success.

Managing Editor, Rebecca Phillips, travelled to BMet - James Watt College to see what this incredible company had to showcase.

Sunbelt Rentals’ Innovation Event

It’s become quite the tradition for an Industry Corner to look at the incredible work of the Sunbelt Rentals team, and I can’t think of a better way to end the year than by doing just that.

In fact, did you know it was the very first Sunbelt Rentals Open Day that I attended in 2023 that inspired this segment altogether? Crazy, right? Well, not really when you consider how much Sunbelt Rentals has to offer.

At Plant Planet, we have always had an amazing time visiting these events, and this year was no exception! With more tech on display than ever before, alongside superb talks, hot coffee and plenty of hands-on activities, it was truly a feast for the senses. We even caught up with the likes of Wacker Neuson, Safety Shield and Hilti, learning the ins and outs of their latest products.

As always, I’m left with one question: Sunbelt Rentals, what can’t you do? But before I answer that, let’s focus on what they can do, shall we?

Hosted at the BMet - James Watts College in Birmingham, this Innovation Event attracted over 400 customers, media partners and staff who came together to make the day one for the books. We were very lucky to be shown around by the lovely Jess Smith, who works for the Sunbelt Rentals marketing team. With Jess at the helm, we set off on our access all areas tour of the show!

As always, there were incredible product demonstrations, ranging from the world’s first battery 185 CFM compressor to their water bankside and water pro. We also chit-chatted with the teams behind all of Sunbelt Rentals’ superb charity work (more on that in a future issue), and this time there were fantastic interactive seminars with Microsoft, ALLMI, IPAF, Immersive (Salesforce partner), their Social Sustainability team and partners.

There were four main areas that really stood out this year, so without further ado, let’s get into it!

Interactive Seminars

In depth lectures from industry experts is always a reason to be excited. But, Sunbelt Rentals took it one step further and ended each seminar with a panel discussion where the audience could question them on the hot topics of the day!

Lifting – Keith Sylvester (ALLMI) and Ewan Robertson (SBR)

Keith looked at the various types of loading formats on lorries, as well as the BS 7121 series code of practice, discussing how to safely perform lifts based on factors ranging from weather to site management. He discussed the tools that are important in such a task, such as the ALLMI calculator app/tool or Trakway.

Ewan supported this by detailing exactly how Sunbelt Rentals can help with this, including supply of their own ALLMI certified drivers and the various RAMS they ensure to make task completion as safe as possible.

Powered Access - Will Temple (SBR) and Brian Parker (IPAF)

Brian Parker delved into how IPAF ensures the continual safety and innovation when it comes to working at height. He discussed both primary (a dead or enable switch) and secondary guarding (a further system that allows control of potential hazards. I.e. an anti-entrapment function). 2020-2024 saw fatalities decrease significantly, yet sadly, they are starting to increase because people ignore the safety precautions, which is why it is valuable that the intelligent secondary guarding mandate is coming. CD ISO25394 covers intelligent harness anchorage, like a seatbelt reminder/forward movement isolator or alerts via visual, audible or texts sent to a supervisor.

Will discussed how using tools such as BIM really contributes to site safety, as well as all the ways in which Sunbelt Rentals strives for best practice.

Social Sustainability - Sarah MacGregor (SBR), Rick Willis (Offploy) and Tom Whitehead (Peak4).

Sarah MacGregor kicked off this talk by focusing on the climate emergency, making sure that leaders are brought together with an agenda with real solutions. She spoke about Forests with Impact social enterprise, which aims to support prisoner rehabilitation while addressing the climate emergency by growing over 250,000 trees.

They are top quality samplings that tackle biodiversity and the natural environment.

Rick Willis then asked the important question – why hire ex-offenders? 1 in 4 people have convictions, even if for small offences, and over 90 of convictions relate to men. Brands such as Timpson, Pret a Manger, Greggs, Boots, Iceland, and so many more all employ ex-offenders.

Tom Whitehead spoke about preventative measures for people’s wellbeing and nutrition, helping them before they ‘break’ by offering service machines.

The Future of AI - Simon MacEnroe (Microsoft) and Ramya Ramamurthy (Transparency)

AI is a scary advancement, and Simon MacEnroe claims “becoming frontier”, discussing how to adopt AI in response to the limit of knowledge when it comes to this advancement. 82% of leaders will adopt digital labour to expand workforce in the next 12-18 months. He claimed that “becoming frontier” is the success framework for your business, as it enriches employee experiences, reinvents customer engagement and reshapes business processes.

Ramya Ramamurthy says that getting a landline felt like a revolution, but now we are unable to live without a mobile phone. As a result, AI must be used responsibly so it is only used to enhance to avoid complete dependence.

Generative AI and AI agentsAbi Chan (Immersive ) and Simon Clarke (Immersive )

Beginning with a timeline of the history of AI, this talk discussed harnessing generative and Agentic AI to redefine what’s possible. It also emphasised the fears behind AI, that AI can access your data, use your date, follow your processes, make decisions in your context; “huge power comes with huge responsibility.” With Agentic Enterprise, agents can step in and make it more human led, but handles the admin. Job roles are still evolving, but in a much better direction.

Innovation Opportunity Lab WorkshopGlyn Mathews (Sunbelt Rentals)

Glyn Matthews explored meaningful problems and pain points, why it matters to who’s affected, and how to understand and overcome. “Change and improvement,” as Glyn said. Data is key, making sure that expectations are managed, and comms need to be more accurate and timelier.

NEW GENERATION WHEEL LOADERS

For 70 years, Volvo CE has led wheel loader innovation. The five newly revamped models; the L150, L180, L200 High Lift, L220 and L260, are engineered to enhance productivity and efficiency and are packed with intelligent solutions.

In addition to a fresh new design, these hard-working and versatile machines now offer faster cycle times, exceptional performance, and unmatched operator comfort across a wide array of applications, including material handling, quarrying, waste and recycling, and earthmoving.

Telemetry

As always, Sunbelt Rentals always strives to be at the forefront of technology, and telemetry is no exception.

For those of you not in the know, telemetry is the automated process of collecting and transmitting data from remote or inaccessible sources to a central location for monitoring and analysis. In other words, it’s the technology that connects all of your devices together. And as we know, in construction, this is a vital way to store information.

So, what exactly does Sunbelt Rentals offer when it comes to the future of construction?

BIM

On the digital and data stand, Sunbelt Rentals had a myriad of products to showcase, including their Augmented Reality app (which we covered in our last review of their open day). But none were as impressive as BIM.

The Sunbelt Rentals Building Information Modelling (BIM) service gives you the power of trustworthy product data at your fingertips for temporary works assets, enabling you to make informed decisions to maximise efficiency, safety, and sustainability while minimising waste and costs right across the supply chain. You access the BIM library to download a huge range of temporary works assets into your digital site, then overlay them onto scans or scaled drawings and add the product data directly into your calculations. It gives you precise, accurate data to help you choose the right products every time, while understanding everything from dimensions to features including lighting patterns, lifting points, safety zones, turning circles and sustainability impacts. Simply configure the product features within your BIM software to give you confidence that you have

the right equipment first time, removing the guesswork. Using this alongside the AR App and their amazing virtual, Sunbelt City, gives you, the user, a fully rounded picture of what to expect on your projects.

To demonstrate this, the digital team used these programmes to create a digital map of the college which played host to the show. They used the model to demonstrate how set up for the event would come together, and how best to space it out! The perfect example to demonstrate such a powerhouse in technology.

Site Cabin Hire

One of the biggest focuses of the day was site cabin hire. Sunbelt Rentals specialises in the provision of temporary accommodation, storage and welfare units to a variety of sectors across the UK, ensuring that they offer an extensive range with a focus on sustainability, quality and value for money. In fact, they operate one of the largest hire fleets in the UK with over 25,000 units and a value of over £165m! A turnkey solution is always on offer, and combined with minimal running costs and lower carbon emissions, they really are an incredible answer to a long-proven problem.

Eco Cabins

Of course, with sustainability being such driver for Sunbelt Rentals, we need to look specifically at their eco cabins. ECO spec cabins are EPC B Rated and offer a variety of environmentally friendly features. Improved insulation and double-glazing help to keep heat in and cold air out, which in turn makes them much cheaper to run. Non-concussive taps and waterless urinals save on water consumption and PIR LED lighting saves on energy consumption and improves lighting efficiency. All of their 32’ cabins come in ECO spec as standard.

Just see the energy saving in the table below!

Anti-Vandal Units

Anti-Vandal Units can help to deter unwanted attention from opportunistic thieves. These are available in an extensive range of layouts and sizes, mainly in 21ft and 24ft. Suitable as: offices, canteens, toilets, showers, training rooms, drying rooms, meeting rooms, changing rooms, first aid rooms. They also supply a wide range of furnishings and white goods for the units.

Fire Rated Cabins

These fire rated buildings can contain fire for 30 minutes under BS476 and fully comply with requirements for fire resistance in the Joint Code of Practice on the Protection from Fire of Construction Sites and Buildings Undergoing Renovation. Suitable for a wide range of uses, including site offices, mess rooms and storage. The robust construction of Surefire makes extensive use of non-combustible Galvatite steel, ensuring long-life and durability. Roof and wall cavities are insulated with non-combustible glasswool fibre, and floor insulation is available as an option.

Sleeper Items

When staff or contractors are working long hours on-site or at an event, their Sleeper Unit provides ideal on-site, anti-vandal sleeping accommodation for up to four members of staff. With one or two bedrooms that can be equipped with either single or bunk beds, these units are cleverly designed and offer comfortable living and sleeping space.

Battery Energy Storage Systems

As always, Sunbelt Rentals used their products in demonstrations across the campus, demonstrating their incredible power in person for all visitors. Linked up to their eco cabin, was the ever-popular Off Grid LX 45/90, which combined with traditional temporary power equipment such as generators to create a hybrid power solution.

Three decades of delivering safety innovations to the plant industry

Spillard Safety Systems has been a critical partner to the plant, construction and heavy-industrial sectors for more than 30 years, enhancing operational safety through the power of innovation.

Founded in 1992 by Vic Spillard and now led by his sons Peter and Craig, the family-run business has installed its products and technology on hundreds of thousands of pieces of equipment across the UK, safeguarding the lives of over a million workers and supporting thousands of sites in achieving safe, compliant environments.

At the heart of its philosophy is a commitment to ‘peoplefirst safety.’ The firm’s solutions – from advanced camera systems and pioneering Human Form Recognition technology to behavioural monitoring tools – are designed to boost awareness around vehicles and machinery, protect vulnerable site workers, and reduce costly downtime.

These innovations, all developed at its state-of-theart headquarters in the West Midlands, have become commonplace on the UK’s largest infrastructure projects, including HS2, Anglian Water SPA, Sizewell C, and Hinkley Point, for prestigious clients, such as Flannery Plant Hire, GAP Plant Hire, JN Bentley, Laing O’Rourke, Morgan Sindall and Skanska Cementation, have all forged strategic partnerships with Spillard and now use its technology to drive safety and regulatory compliance.

Protecting your people, your fleet, your future.

Think of Spillard’s human-form recognition system as a vehicle that’s been given “people-spotting superpowers.”

Instead of panicking every time it sees a cone, fence, or flapping hi-vis jacket, the system uses AI-powered cameras trained specifically to recognise the shape of a human being – arms, legs, movement, the lot. If it looks like a person, it pays attention. If it doesn’t, it stays quiet.

As soon as a human wanders into a danger zone around the vehicle, the system lights up and beeps inside the cab, letting the driver know “hey – there’s an actual person nearby.” The closer the person gets, the more urgent the warning becomes. On some setups, it can even pause vehicle movement to stop accidents before they happen.

In short:

• Sees people, not clutter • Warns drivers in real time

• Thinks before it shouts

• Helps keep humans and plant from becoming a bad combination

It’s basically a calm, smart co-driver whose only job is making sure people stay safe around big machines.

Spotting danger before it happens… an overview of the Spillard Human Detection System

In heavy-plant environments, visibility is critical. The Spillard Human Detection System (HDS), used by leading companies such as Skanska Cementation, is an advanced safety solution that uses AI-powered cameras to monitor blind spots and slewing zones, recognising people – and only people – before danger occurs. Unlike traditional sensors, HDS eliminates false alarms from objects or debris, alerting operators only when someone is at risk.

When a person enters a detection zone, colour-coded alerts (green, amber, red) appear on the in-cab display, with audible warnings. On certain machines, such as cranes, it can trigger an automatic stop in critical zones. Built for harsh conditions, the rugged hardware works reliably in dust, mud, rain and low light.

Integrated with Spillard Live, the cloud platform enables incident review, near-miss analysis and real-time fleet data, promoting a proactive safety culture.

The result for clients is enhanced operator awareness, reduced downtime, and safer, more controlled worksites.

The durability of our solutions has always been a big selling point, and this was reinforced back in 2013 when one of our products survived a world first attempt to cross the Antarctic.

The ‘Ice Team’, a five-man British expedition that was originally going to be led by Sir Ranulph Fienness, chose the Spillard Live DVR with 360º camera system to give it an essential camera link between the dozer and the critical containers they were pulling.

This meant that any issues with decoupling or snowdrifts could be viewed immediately in real time and evasive action taken to ensure the vital food, medical equipment and temporary housing didn’t fall victim to some of the harshest weather conditions ever seen.

We are pleased to say our technology was operational for all the 244 miles travelled, facing up to -63ºc temperatures and more than 2185metres of altitude. In fact, we still have camera footage of the expedition at our base in the West Midlands!

Compact, Capable and

Alongside the workers and operators, machinery is the most important asset on site, so making sure you get the right tool for the job is vital. Smart spending means smart equipment, and thoughtful maintenance can stretch your budget and boost long-term ROI (return on investment). However, all this then begs one question: how does one get the most for their money?

Construction sites can be incredibly harsh environments with abrasive materials and heavy loads, and therefore the machinery has to be designed and built specifically to withstand such conditions. After all, you need the right tools for the project at hand to get the job done! Operators and workers take pride in their machines, and they need to be looked after with the utmost care. When investing in new machinery, remember the 3 Cs: Compact, Capable and Cost-Effective.

How is Compact Equipment Being Utilised?

Compact equipment is extremely useful on-site, and pushes projects even further. These machines, such as mini excavators, skid loaders, and compact wheel loaders, are essential for urban construction, infrastructure development, and mining activities. The industry is driven by factors such as urbanisation, technological advancements, and the shift towards sustainability.

and Cost Effective

• Versatility: The compact equipment machinery can perform multiple tasks, and with the right attachments, such as digging, lifting, and moving materials, the multitasking machinery can really elevate a project.

• Efficiency: Designed to maximize efficiency in environments where larger machines cannot operate effectively, it shows that sometimes, less (or smaller!) really is more.

• Cost-Effectiveness: When it comes to saving money, compact equipment often comes with lower fuel and maintenance costs, which in turn, makes them more of an economical choice.

• Safety: Technology is always on the rise, especially in the construction industry, and technological advancements such as automation and telematics, can help to enhance the safety of compact machines on job sites.

• Urban Adaptability: Because of their smaller, compact size, this makes the machinery perfect for navigating tight, urban spaces and can fit through narrow passages without causing any disruptions. The demand for compact equipment is on the rise as urban areas continue to grow and space becomes more limited.

It’s clear that these machines are changing how construction projects are done, especially in cities, by providing the necessary tools for efficient and effective work. It’s about being more practical, especially when it comes to money and profit.

Practical Profit

The practical profit in the construction industry is influenced by a variety of factors, including project type, size, location, and market conditions. Profit margins can range from 5% to 10% for some contractors, while others may aim for a higher margin of 10% to 15%. However, the average profit margin in the UK construction sector is reported to be as low as 1.7%. This low average profit margin is attributed to rising material and labour costs, as well as other economic factors affecting the industry.

There are ways to increase the profit margins, though! By implementing cost control measures, such as precise budgeting and resource allocation, and negotiating better prices with suppliers, this can help improve the situation. Efficient project management and understanding the types of overheads, including direct and indirect, are also crucial. By focusing on these areas, construction companies can better manage their costs and increase their profitability.

Profit margins, such as gross profit margin, operating profit margin, and net profit margin, are critical indicators of a construction company’s financial health. They help in assessing how well a company is managing pricing, costs, and expenses. By effectively utilising practical profit, construction companies can navigate the complexities of the industry, improve their financial performance, and ensure the sustainability of their operations.

As mentioned before, there are three types of profit margin in construction.

- Gross profit margin: This refers to the direct profitability of a construction project, which is calculated by removing the costs of labour and materials from the revenue.

- Operating profit margin: This considers the overhead costs of a construction business, such as rent, utilities and salaries.

- Net profit margin: This covers all the financial obligations of a construction company, including taxes and interest, and is the total revenue after all other expenses have been taken away.

Overall, profit margins in a construction company are extremely vital, as they play a huge part in measuring the financial health as well as managing pricing, costs and expenses.

the average profit margin in the UK construction sector is reported to be as low as 1.7%

ROI (Return on Investment)

ROI is a financial metric that measures the ratio of net profit generated from a construction project to the initial investment required to undertake it. It is calculated using the formula: ROI = (Net Profit / Cost of Investment) x 100. Measuring and keeping track of your ROI in construction is important for a number of reasons:

- Financial Viability: ROI makes it easier to assess whether a project is financially viable and worth pursuing. It allows for comparison between different projects to prioritise resource allocation effectively.

- Performance Evaluation: By evaluating the ROI of completed projects, areas for improvement in future endeavours are then easily identifiable, enhancing overall project management and execution.

- Stakeholder Insights: Different stakeholders may define ROI based on their unique priorities, such as safety, sustainability, or employee retention, making it essential to understand these varying perspectives.

Understanding and optimising ROI in the world of construction is essential for project success and profitability. By considering various factors and employing strategic approaches, stakeholders can enhance their investment outcomes and drive sustainable growth in an increasingly competitive market.

Machine Longevity

Looking after and maintaining your machines can really lengthen their lives and is arguably the best way to get the most for your money when investing in construction machinery. This then also maximises the operational life of the equipment, which can be pushed even further by:

- Regular Maintenance: Ensuring that machinery is regularly serviced by professional technicians to prevent or slow down wear and tear, which includes oil changes, filter replacements, and necessary repairs.

- Proper Operation Training: Operators need to be adequately trained in the proper operation of the equipment to avoid excessive and unnecessary wear and tear.

- Correct Accessories and Attachments: Using the correct accessories and attachments for the job will prevent damage and extend the life of the machinery.

- Proper Storage and Transport: Properly storing and transporting machinery to protect it from the elements reduces the risk of damage.

By implementing these strategies, all construction machinery can be maintained for longer periods of time, thus contributing to cost savings and project efficiency.

One of the biggest questions when it comes to the lifecycle of construction machinery is: should the equipment be repaired, upgraded, or replaced? Repairs can be the easier option, but can be costly when problems keep occurring, especially when the better investment would be to replace. It can be a cost-effective short-term solution, which doesn’t help longterm. Although, upgrading specific components or adding attachments can significantly extend a machine’s usability.

Sometimes, however, replacing could be the most economical and practical solution. This becomes the best choice when a machine’s repair and operational costs significantly outweigh its productivity benefits. This also keeps the machinery up-to-date with new technology benefits, therefore reducing time and costs for construction projects. After all, every machine eventually reaches a point where replacement becomes inevitable.

To determine the best course of action, companies should conduct a thorough cost-benefit analysis. Key factors, such as the machine’s current market value, projected repair or upgrade costs, and potential productivity gains, must be evaluated and taken into consideration, as well as using equipment management software to help track maintenance history, operating costs, and performance metrics, enabling data-driven decisions.

Any business and company can maximise productivity and profitability by weighing costs, performance and operational needs. All in all, managing the lifecycle of construction machinery requires a proactive approach, which in turn, ensures you’re getting the most for your money.

Materials Help Save Costs Too!

Due to the harsh conditions of any construction site, the machines must be durable. High quality steel is known for its strength and resilience, and is an essential part of construction attachments. Common types of steel used are:

- Carbon Steel: This type of steel is hardy and immensely strong, and is the most popular material used when making construction attachments.

- Alloy Steel: Including extra elements, such as chromium and nickel, this steel’s strengths are corrosion resistance and mechanics.

- Stainless Steel: Highly resistant to rust and corrosion, this steel is ideal for the harsher weathers and tougher environments.

The performance of the machinery is reliant on the materials used, and is critical for maintaining the longevity and efficiency of the equipment. This also avoids premature degradation, supporting a longer life, while enhancing the functionality. Higher durability means fewer replacements and repairs, which can be more cost-effective in the long run. Combined, this also helps promote a more trustworthy health and safety value, leaving you safe in the knowledge that the equipment you’re buying is high level, ultimately giving you more bang for your buck!

Getting the Most for your Money

Investment is key when it comes to getting the most for your money; poor planning can lead to expensive changes later. Maintenance costs and energy efficiency need to be considered too. Sometimes spending more upfront saves money in the long run! Spend strategically, not just minimally. Think of the lifecycle cost, not just the upfront cost!
