With the launch of the SV39, Yanmar Compact Equipment EMEA completes its 3.5–4.0 tonne mini excavator line-up. Designed with exceptional stability, smooth performance and operator comfort at its core, the SV39 is a versatile and reliable partner for demanding job sites.
Yanmar Compact Equipment EMEA continues to strengthen its compact excavator portfolio with the introduction of the new SV39. Positioned in the 3.5–4.0 tonne class, this model combines exceptional stability, responsive performance and operator-focused design, offering an optimal solution for a wide range of applications.
Stability is a defining characteristic of the SV39. With optimised weight distribution and a reinforced undercarriage, the machine remains steady even under heavy loads or on uneven terrain. For applications where precision is essential, an optional 160 kg counterweight further enhances balance and control. Whether trenching, grading, lifting or loading, operators can work with confidence, even in confined or complex environments.
Under the hood, the SV39 is powered by Yanmar’s fuel-efficient Stage V 3TNV88-ESBV2 diesel engine, delivering 18.5 kW at 2,200 rpm. This is paired with a high-performance hydraulic system, comprising dual variable displacement pumps and a gear pump, ensuring fast, smooth and consistent operation. With a bucket digging force of 32.8 kN and arm forces of up to 20.8 kN, the SV39 is well equipped to handle demanding excavation tasks efficiently.
The SV39 has been designed around the operator, with a spacious, ergonomic cab that offers excellent visibility, intuitive joystick controls and a fully adjustable seat. A new 4.3-inch colour display and improved air conditioning contribute to a more comfortable working environment, reducing fatigue over long hours. Low noise levels further enhance operator comfort and safety.
Available in both canopy and cab versions, and with a choice of rubber or steel crawlers, the SV39 can be tailored to specific site conditions. Compact dimensions, with a transport weight starting at 3,490 kg and an overall width of 1,740 mm, make it easy to transport and ideal for work in restricted spaces.
Maintenance has also been simplified. Large, lockable service hoods provide excellent access to key components, while daily checks can be performed quickly from ground level. A right-side hood that opens without tools makes radiator cleaning and inspections straightforward, reducing downtime and maximising productivity.
Finished in Yanmar’s signature Premium Red, the SV39 combines Japanese engineering expertise with European manufacturing quality. It offers stability, performance and reliability in a compact, powerful package, designed to meet the needs of modern construction sites.
Professionals attending PlantWorx will have the opportunity to discover the SV39 in person at Yanmar’s stand DC-01.

It’s summer, and that means one thing for dust suppression hire companies like us - the phones are ringing off the hook.
Construction, demolition, and industrial sites across the UK are kicking up dust, and people are urgently looking for ways to keep it under control. More often than not, the first thing we hear is: “We need a dust cannon.”
But here’s the thing: while dust cannons are a type of dust suppression, they’re just one piece of a much larger puzzle. And understanding what they are — and what they aren’t, can make all the difference when choosing the right solution for your site.
Dust cannons are probably what comes to mind when someone says “dust suppression”, and for good reason. These machines are big, bold, and built for heavy-duty use.
Picture a large cone-shaped head mounted on a trailer, usually paired with a generator and a bowser (a water tank). At the front is a nozzle ring (a circle of small nozzles that spray water) and at the back, a powerful fan that projects the mist over long distances.
Dust cannons are designed to soak the target area. They use a lot of water - typically between 30 and 70 litres per minute - and are best suited for large-scale outdoor work, especially where wind is a factor. This makes them perfect for high-dust environments like demolition or bulk material handling. Because of their size, power, and water consumption, they sit at the higher end of the hire cost spectrum. But when you need serious suppression, they’re the “big boy” kit for the job.
the little sibling of Dust Cannons
Now, here’s where it gets interesting — not all machines that look like cannons are dust cannons.
Rotary atomisers are a completely different type of dust suppression equipment. While they might look similar at a glance (a cone-shaped head), they work differently and serve a different purpose. Rather than a nozzle ring, rotary atomisers use a spinning disc (the ‘atomiser’) to throw a much finer mist into the air. They use far less water -
usually under 10 litres per minute - and are ideal for close-up applications where too much water would be a problem. They’re not designed to soak an area, but to control dust without flooding This makes them perfect for internal use, confined spaces, or areas where water sensitivity is an issue.
The key differentiations:
• Dust cannons throw a lot of water in heavier droplets
• Rotary Atomisers throw less water in a finer mist (smaller droplets)
• Dust cannons are for large-scale suppression and open ground where wind is a key factor
• Rotary Atomisers are for up-close projects where a cannon would soak the area and produce too much water to be appropriate
Dust suppression isn’t one-size-fits-all. Depending on the site, conditions, and goals, different tools are available:
• Road-Tow Bowsers with Rear Spray Bars or Spreaders Ideal for soaking access tracks and applying dust control additives over large surfaces.
• Precision Misting Jet Equipment
Offers a compact alternative to dust cannons. Throws a heavy mist but in a more targeted way. Often requires a mains water connection.
• Fixed Suppression Systems
Installed in place and connected to a mains supply. These systems might use cannons, atomisers, nozzle-line setups, or even targeted jet suppression directly at the dust source.
• Boundary Misting Systems
These sit around the perimeter of a site, using a series of nozzles every 1–2 metres to form a “mist wall,” preventing dust from leaving the site.
Choosing the wrong dust suppression setup can lead to poor results — or even create new problems. Use too little suppression, and dust escapes. Use too much, and you’re flooding your site unnecessarily.
That’s why it’s so important to get expert advice before hiring equipment. Every site is different, and the right solution depends on factors like site size, dust type, proximity to sensitive areas, and water availability.
Need help figuring out what you need? Give us a call on 01905 362100 or email sales@airspectrum.com — we’re happy to guide you to the right dust suppression setup for your site.

Quick Comparison: Dust Cannon vs. Rotary Atomiser
Feature Dust Cannon Rotary Atomiser
Water Usage High (30–70 L/min) Low (<10 L/min)
Droplet Size Larger, heavier droplets Smaller, lighter droplets
Coverage Type Long-range, open areas Close-range, targeted
Use Case Large-scale, outdoor
Smaller-scale, indoor or outdoor confined
Coverage Distance 20-60+m 10-20m

The rebrand is not only cosmetic. At its core is a sophisticated two-point perspective design system, creating a distinctive and unified visual identity that signals scale, innovation, and forward thinking - qualities that set Astrak apart.
Astrak’s modernised look and global strategy are designed to support further expansion through acquisitions while enabling seamless integration of new businesses. The goal is simple: deliver top-quality undercarriage and wear parts, backed by world-class service, wherever they’re needed.
For customers, partners, and operators alike, being “Powered by Astrak” now carries more meaning than everconfidence in the tools they use and the people who deliver them.

After many years of owning and running a successful plant and equipment hire business, there comes a time when you think “enough is enough, I need to get out and live another life.”
It’s a big decision and a very exciting prospect but it’s one that comes with a raft of personal, emotional and financial issues and many more big decisions.
As the only specialist advisory for the plant and equipment hire sector and having sold 22 hire businesses in the last few years, here are 10 things you should consider before you sell, including working with a sales advisory.
1. Deciding to sell
This decision takes time and should not be rushed. Understand why you want to sell and what you want your future life to be. This includes how much you need to achieve from the proceeds. It’s very personal but having a vision for your future and a plan post sale will serve as a highly motivating thought when you confront some of the more challenging issues that inevitably arise during the process.
2. How to go about selling
You have three choices. You can do it yourself or engage one of the many generalist ‘brokers’, or you can engage a specialist hire sector advisory.
The DIY route will appear to be the cheapest but can be fraught with issues for the inexperienced seller. It is more difficult to identify and engage with the best buyers for your business. Also, experienced buyers and their lawyers can take advantage of less experienced sellers, particularly once you are committed and the completion date looms, so beware.
Generalist brokers understand the sales process, but less so the hire business, the market and who the best buyers are
for your business. Watch out for tempting but unrealistic valuations and check the basis of fees and their actual success rate in your sector.
A specialist business sales advisory understands your business, the market and the buyers where ‘strategic fit’ means optimal value. They will also help you prepare for sale, present a compelling business case and support you during the sale.
The $64,000 question. What is my business worth? The answer is what the right buyer will pay for it based on strategic fit and industry norms. A specialist advisory will conduct an informed valuation and give you a realistic range with consideration of all the relevant factors including asset value, customer profiles, growth potential, location and industry conditions. This is essential in achieving the best price and a happy exit.
Selling a business often involves sensitive information. With a sales advisory acting for you it is easier to maintain confidentiality, ensuring that key employees, customers, and competitors don’t become aware of the sale prematurely, which could negatively affect business operations.
5 Target Marketing: Its not just about price
Business sales advisors know, and have access to, a network of potential buyers, including private equity firms, investors and high-net-worth individuals. They will help you select the most appropriate candidates and that does not necessarily mean the highest bidder. People and culture also count to ensure the future wellbeing of your employees, your customers, the success of the transaction

and ultimately your happiness on exit, legacy intact.
6. Preparation and Information Memorandum (IM)
Buyers are entrepreneurs but they are advised by accountants for whom data and numbers are essential. An advisory will help to organise these and prepare the key sales aid, the Information Memorandum. So, get your house in order and have details of your fleet profile, your financials, customer and sector profiles, premises and debt.
7. Negotiation Skills
Negotiating a sale can be difficult, especially if you don’t have experience with complex business transactions. A sales advisory can help you handle difficult buyers, ensuring that you get the best terms possible. They will also help you avoid being pressured into accepting a lower offer than your business is worth.
8. Managing the process
Selling a business is time-consuming and stressful. A business sales advisor will manage the entire process—from preparing the business for sale, handling the marketing, vetting potential buyers, to closing the deal. This allows you to stay focused on running your business without distraction.
9. Legal and Regulatory Compliance
The sale of a business involves legal documents and contracts, and an experienced law firm is essential. A sales advisory will help you understand the legal aspects of the transaction reducing the risk and cost of future disputes.
10. Avoiding Emotional Decisions
When you sell your business, emotions can sometimes cloud judgment. An advisor provides an objective viewpoint and helps you make rational decisions, ensuring that the sale aligns with your long-term goals and financial plans.
In summary, using a business sales advisory, and ideally a hire industry specialist, when selling your plant and equipment hire business ensures a more efficient, profitable, and secure sale process while reducing the risks and complexities associated with the transaction.

Kramp, which has built a commanding market share in agricultural spare parts supplies, has set its sights on the construction sector for further growth.
Kramp is a name many in the trade may not be aware of, but they have built a significant presence as an agricultural spare parts supplier in the UK, and now the leadership have their sights set on growing in the construction sector.
The Dutch firm has its UK base at its central distribution centre in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. With 150,000 square feet of space, it can stock up to 80,000 products. During a typical week, 9,000 boxes are shipped, involving the picking of 30,000 lines. The aim is to achieve next-day delivery wherever possible.
With significant overlap between agricultural and construction equipment, particularly in earthmovers and excavators, Leo Copping, field sales manager for Kramp, explains that targeting the construction sector was a logical next step.
“We have a wide assortment suited to construction, especially in areas like hydraulics,” he says. “Not only do we carry an extensive range of hydraulic items in stock, but Kramp has built a lot of expertise in the area, offering our agricultural dealers training and dedicated product support.”
Leo acknowledges that Kramp still has some work to do to build its range of construction lines to become a onestop shop, like it offers its agricultural customers.
“Suppliers are attracted to our sameday dispatch and next-day logistics, and the support we can offer for their products. We are continually onboarding new suppliers.
“The ultimate aim is to stock everything a hire company or contractor may need. It’s a matter of when we have a full construction assortment, not if.
“Until then, Kramp stocks most items at competitive prices and backed up with outstanding levels of service. It is a good opportunity for a new customer to try out Kramp’s efficient logistics without feeling they have to move to a new supplier entirely,” explains Leo.

In the demanding world of heavy-duty plant and construction operations, machinery is expected to perform in extreme conditions—high loads, abrasive environments, temperature fluctuations, and continuous duty cycles. In such settings, every component of operational reliability counts, and one of the most critical yet often underestimated elements is the lubricant. Using high-quality lubricants is not merely about keeping parts moving; it’s about ensuring uptime, reducing maintenance costs, extending equipment life, and increasingly, protecting the environment.
Lubricants in construction machinery serve several essential functions: reducing friction and wear, managing heat, preventing rust and corrosion, and removing contaminants from internal surfaces. Poor-quality or misapplied lubricants compromise all these functions, leading to frequent breakdowns, increased maintenance downtime, and higher operational costs.
High-quality lubricants—such as those developed by Shell—are specifically engineered to meet or exceed OEM specifications and to perform reliably under the harshest of conditions. They contribute directly to operational efficiency by ensuring smoother equipment performance, reducing the likelihood of component failure, and increasing fuel efficiency through lower friction.

Shell has long been a global leader in lubricant innovation, offering a wide range of products specifically designed for the construction and heavy plant sector. These include hydraulic fluids, engine oils, gear oils, and greases tailored for everything from excavators and bulldozers to cranes and off-highway trucks.
Shell Rimula heavy-duty diesel engine oil provides excellent wear protection and engine cleanliness, helping extend oil drain intervals and reducing total cost of ownership. Similarly, Shell Tellus hydraulic oils are renowned for their stability under pressure and high-load conditions, minimizing downtime and maximizing efficiency of hydraulic systems. Their anti-wear technology ensures that critical components remain protected even during extended service intervals.

Moreover, Shell’s range of synthetic and semi-synthetic lubricants offers even greater thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and low-temperature performance—ideal for machines that need to start reliably and operate efficiently in both freezing and scorching environments.
While performance and efficiency are key, another growing concern in the construction and heavy-duty equipment sectors is environmental impact. Many projects take place in or near ecologically sensitive areas—rivers, wetlands, agricultural land, or protected habitats. In these scenarios, lubricant leaks or spills can pose a significant threat to soil and water quality.
To address this, Shell offers a range of Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) under the Shell PANOLIN brand. These products are biodegradable, non-toxic, and compliant with international environmental standards such as the U.S. EPA’s Vessel General Permit (VGP) and ISO 15380. Shell PANOLIN lubricants combine high biodegradability with outstanding performance—ensuring that operators don’t need to compromise on protection, longevity, or reliability to meet environmental regulations.
Shell PANOLIN is especially suited for applications with a high risk of lubricant leakage or potential land contamination, such as piling rigs, drilling equipment, marine construction platforms, and forestry machinery. These lubricants not only reduce the risk of environmental damage but can also help organizations meet sustainability targets and avoid costly fines or remediation actions.
Using quality lubricants like Shell and Shell PANOLIN products offers measurable operational benefits. Fewer breakdowns mean less unplanned downtime—a major cost factor in any heavy equipment operation. Longer oil life and extended drain intervals reduce the frequency of maintenance shutdowns, allowing equipment to spend more time doing productive work.
With increasing regulatory scrutiny, environmental expectations, and the drive for decarbonisation, the choice of lubricants is becoming a strategic decision in construction and heavy plant operations. Lubricants are no longer a mere consumable but a performance-enhancing, risk-reducing, and sustainability-enabling component.
Shell’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident not just in product development but also in its global supply chain and R&D investments. With proven products like Shell Rimula, Shell Tellus, and Shell Gadus for high-performance needs, alongside Shell PANOLIN for environmentally sensitive applications, Shell provides a comprehensive lubrication solution for modern construction challenges.
The use of high-quality lubricants in heavy-duty plant and construction machinery delivers tangible benefits—improved equipment performance, reduced maintenance costs, enhanced fuel economy, and increased asset lifespan. In an industry where reliability and efficiency are everything, the choice of lubricant can make the difference between profit and loss.
When environmental concerns also come into play, such as the risk of contamination in ecologically sensitive areas, Shell PANOLIN lubricants provide a trusted solution that aligns performance with responsibility. For forward-thinking construction companies, partnering with a proven leader like Shell ensures that operations are not only efficient and reliable, but also future-ready and environmentally sound.

Innovative tech is paving the way for the construction industry, allowing it to reach new limits. Tech such as robotics and automation, 3D printing, and VR and AR are ways to save time, costs, as well as opening up new innovation opportunities.
In the ever-evolving world of construction, there is no choice but to stay up to date with technology trends to keep the work moving forward. With this comes new adaptations to both onsite projects and behind the scenes, resulting in a mixed bag of emotions and results.
But I think now, it’s safe to say that the construction industry is certainly friends with the latest tech, not arch nemeses.
Firstly, what even is innovative tech? “Innovative” means advanced and original, so it takes regular every-day technology that extra step further. There are so many brands and companies on the innovation-train, inspiring new mindsets and approaches that help push the construction industry to its highest potential.
We’ve all heard of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by now; in fact, some of us can hardly escape it! But the rise of AI has been a perfect example of how, in some cases, innovative tech such as this can really help launch certain projects.
However, today, I’m here to talk about innovative tech that consistently delivers and provides benefits to the industry. Could this be the answer to advanced ideas that always help and never hinder?

With the constant rise of technology in every aspect of our lives, innovative tech is also making a big impression on the construction industry. But how is better technology aiding operator training, health and safety and general on-site projects?
By Lorna Cowlin
Technology that supports construction
Capja is a company that aids construction projects through their technology. Founded and created by Josh Wallman and Andy Burgess, their focus is simplicity. Their straightforward tech is designed to work seamlessly, making the job easier for them as well as those on site. Their mission: simplify the complex. With their three techniques, CapjaDocs, AssetCapja and CapjaForms, they have mastered the art of being a support network in all areas. Their systems eliminate any human error. Therefore, they are more reliable and save so much time. Combined, this saves time, money and effort. With QR (Quick Response) codes, online forms and keeping all data in one place, it’s clear Capja provides efficiency to the construction and demolition sectors, providing simple yet hugely effective results.
Another brand that helps with this and is revolutionising plant is Datatag. Datatag provides a powerful theft deterrent creating unique systems that add layers of identification to your assets and parts. They have a secure database where all identifications are stored, which is also accessible to police officers globally! Marked items equate to more risk and less profit, effectively deterring thieves, which makes on site products and machinery much safer and protected. Datatag products are four times less likely to be stolen, and approximately six times more likely to be recovered, which are very reassuring stats!

We combine technological innovation with craft smanship to produce lifting solutions that rewrite the industry standards.
Our telescopic handlers are designed to overco me any challenge, thanks to unrivalled perfor mance, best-in-class visibility and groundbrea king technological innovations.
Their compact size makes TH models ideal for operation in tight spaces, with unbeatable agility in all operations.

We aim to enable you to work easily in a safe, comfortable environment, so you can be sure of performing at your best every day.

By using unique forensic DNA, each piece of equipment is protected with an invisible and unique DNA code, which is almost impossible to remove. It is the pinnacle of Datatag’s forensic security technology. Once again, like Capja, the aim here is simplicity. Without this kind of technology, machines, tools and products would not nearly be as safe as they are. In short, such technology equals protection – you can’t argue with that logic!
Simulation training is one of the best ways for plant operators to train in real circumstances without the consequences of real-world danger. This provides genuine experience before venturing onto a real machine.
Executive Chairman and Chief Legal Officer for SIMS (Serious Industrial Motion Simulators), Jim Colvin explained and demonstrated their product when I attended his presentation at IPAF Elevation 2024. He discussed the importance of machinery simulation, a key factor that gives someone the practice before getting into a real machine. Not only do they provide simulation training, but they also provide Virtual Reality (VR) training too.
Jim compared VR training to the terminator, claiming that “it knows where you are at all times. It’s coming for you.” Whilst that sounds slightly terrifying (thanks for the nightmares, Jim), it’s clear that the eagle-eyed VR is training you to be the ‘best of the best’, eliminating any possibility of real accidents. VR sees every action and infraction, giving extremely reliable results.
The statistics show that after only 45 minutes of simulator training, improvements can already be seen. VR training is
vital, because it allows mistakes to be made without any severe consequences, and allows hours of practice before one can even go to a real-life site. This massively aids operator training, and effectively reduces the risks of extreme mishaps, promoting both safety and efficiency.
More than just blue-prints, Building Information Modelling (BIM) is changing the way buildings are being designed and modelled by creating a comprehensive, data-rich model that improves planning, automation, and efficiency at every stage of a building’s life cycle. This is significant in the construction industry, as it helps improve efficiency and collaboration, playing a key role in transforming how buildings are planned, built, and maintained. As a result, BIM helps streamline workflows, reduce errors, and integrate cutting-edge technologies like big data and IoT.
Key features of BIM include:
- 3D, 4D, 5D, and even 7D modelling (time, cost, sustainability, and facilities)
- Collaborative cloud-based design
- Clash detection and real-time coordination
- Lifecycle asset management
BIM isn’t just a software, contractors and construction workers can utilise it to expand their on-site projects with one simple system. It digitises construction sites by connecting project information from the design process, all the way to construction and building.

Drones are now a big deal, and when it comes to construction projects, they’re virtually a necessity. Drones are the eyes in the skies! They can produce immensely high-quality imagery in real-time, providing data that will help with site assessments and monitoring, as well as being amazing at capturing footage of the project. Drones can also help with safety monitoring, as they are the eyes that see all. They can also be used on-site for:
- Land surveys
- Building inspections
- Providing visuals
- Monitoring on-site activities
- Security surveillance
- Mapping Data
- Prevent Costly Mistakes
- Provide Better Project Updates
- Improve Safety
- Improve Collaboration
- Mitigate Risk
With construction being such a dynamic setting and projects being so busy, drone footage can really help notice things that perhaps would’ve originally gone amiss. It really pays to have eyes in the sky!
Alongside drones, construction robotics have come a long way too. It’s something that has been around for many years, and has seen a recent increase in use on-site. Robotics can help lower costs, save time and get a job done more efficiently, especially monotonous and repetitive jobs. Tasks such as bricklaying and welding are jobs the robotics can quickly learn to do with the utmost safety. This boosts the efficiency of the entire project.
Robotics used in remote-controlled machinery – such as an excavator or a bulldozer – allows the work to be done and
completed from a steady, safe location. This way produces the best visibility and ensures operator safety.
Automation, a specific application of engineering robotics, is fast becoming a key factor in most construction projects as more organisations are embracing technology advances like this. Helping with tasks such as manufacturing, dispensing and packing allows for greater precision and accuracy.
Whilst it’s great to have technology as a helping hand, the fear that it will take over and steal jobs is a very real one. The World Economic Forum report stated that around 5 million jobs had been lost by 2020, and in the last five years, that number is sure to have increased. Furthermore, the report also claimed that with the rise of AI, this will have a significant impact on the construction industry, accounting for 10% of overall employment losses.
However, on the other hand, despite the fears, the report also estimated that over 400,000 job roles in architecture, construction and engineering will be required. So even though technology, albeit innovative and incredible, is taking over what was once human-powered jobs, it is also reassuring to know that it won’t steal everything. Innovative tech is still aiding construction sites and will continue to do so alongside the hard-working and talented contractors and operators.
Despite the fear and the hindrance, it’s clear that technology isn’t only aiding the construction industry, but it is also changing it for the better. It’s adapting the industry to fit with the modern world as well as improving key factors such as health and safety, accuracy and efficiency, time and costs.
I suppose the fear of AI and innovative tech taking over the world will always be prevalent, but it’s important to focus on the positives. And in my opinion? The positives certainly outweigh the negatives.

With exceptional stability at its core, the new SV39-7 delivers precise performance in every task. Its robustness supports a wide range of attachments, making it the versatile and reliable choice for demanding professionals.

Lana discusses the difficulties of sick leave in the world of construction, and the long term effects it can have.
I know it’s not a fun topic of conversation, but it’s the truth. And it seemed particularly prevalent for this article as Lana and I sat down to have our catch up,as poor Lana was nursing one hell of a cold. And not being one to let anything stand in her way, we decided to derail any plans we had for this article and instead talked about the realities of sick leave in construction, or rather, the lack of it.
As with most of those in the biz, Lana is selfemployed. And one of the biggest downsides to self-employment is no work = no pay. Be it holiday or sickness, the absence means the same thing, and that is certainly a lot of pressure to place on a person. They are married to the job.
“It’s not just about the money though,” explained a very snuffly Lana from the safety of her digger cab. “It’s letting the team down. On site here, this machine is mine and mine alone. If I’m not in for one reason or another, it just stands still. It delays the job and that’s a loss for the team and the company. No one wins.”
But as I said, everyone gets sick. Sickness is an unavoidable part of life and does eventually catch up to all of us. So, what happens when a contractor does in fact get sick?
“In 2014 I was off for 6 months because of a burst appendix,” mused Lana. “If I’d been even 8 hours later with going to hospital, I know for a fact I wouldn’t be here today. I was so ill I simply couldn’t do anything. It really buggered up my bowels.”
Not only would Lana have faced the daunting prospect of her physical recovery, the inability to return to work meant a complete loss of income and eating into years’ worth of savings. Even after seeking help from social services, she received no help. And with no sort of sick leave for contract workers, Lana had only herself to rely on.
“I was chatting to my site manager about this very subject,” continued Lana. “He told me about a young lad who had a terrible stomach ache one day, and did his due diligence and went to the doctors and was placated with pills.

She lives and breathes her work, her lifelong commitment to the demanding mistress that is construction work still going strong.

He kept doing this because he just wanted to work, but in the end, he died of a burst appendix. He was only 23. It could have been worse for me, and I’m thankful for that at least.”
My question is, does that not detract from the love of the job? Personally, I would find it very hard to stay motivated after such an experience, and I think a great many of us would too. How does Lana keep the passion alive, so to speak.
“It’s never taken away from how much I love operating,” assured Lana. “I was built for it. My background is farming, and on the farm, it’s a permanent job with absolutely no time off.”
Of course, Clarkson’s Farm has demonstrated some small part of that to the general public, but it truly doesn’t convey the reality of it.
“One time, when I was working in Telford, I had a sciatic problem. I was driven home lying in the back of a Land Rover because it was the only way to move me. I was told by the doctor that I needed at least 3 months off for recovery.”
And how long was she actually off I hear you ask?
“One week,” laughed Lana. “I didn’t have the time to be off. Though I’m fairly certain it’s created problems with the nerves to this day. Sometimes I worry my toes will just fall off because of all the scarring on my nerves. But you see, carrying on has been instilled in me since I was tiny. When I worked agriculture, I’d start at 6AM and work all the way through until 2AM. Then it was back home for a butty, cuppa and nap, and then back out in the fields again for 6AM again. You run on vapours because that’s what it takes.
“I knew of two brothers who used to work alternate shifts on their farm. One day, one of the brothers got sick, so the other picked up his shift alongside. He was so exhausted that he fell asleep at the wheel, drove into an arctic lorry and died. It’s why you often get seasonal workers in things like agriculture and construction. Working such long hard hours is the type of life that should only really be done for short periods of time. But for those of us that have lived and breathed it since childhood, we don’t’ often see any way around it.”
And yet still, the passion Lana has for construction is so evident in the smile that lights up her face when she talks about it.
“It’s hard. I’m not denying it. But I suppose, as it’s the way I’ve always worked, self-employment is always the way forward for me. I do think there should be other provisions to not make it so tough for those of us that want to work that way though. I don’t know how you’d change it, but that’s not my job. All I can do is highlight the problem. Particularly given the latest changes in how tax is tracked. Everything is just getting harder.”
Lana still doesn’t take days off. In fact, the last days she did take off were to go to Hillhead… and that was last summer! And her weekends are taken up with looking after her farm. She lives and breathes her work, her lifelong commitment to the demanding mistress that is construction work still going strong.
“The issue needs to be talked about. I think if companies offered some sort of compensation for self employed workers, or at least changed the task master attitude, people would look after themselves better, and ultimately not be off for as long. People work 12 hour days with 2 hours of travel either side. Even on a good day, its tough! Add sickness to that it’s down right dangerous. I think it’s Bentley that now include travel time in their working hours. I don’t know what the ceiling on that is, but I think it’s a good way forward. It shows willing, and that’s important.”
And this is the reason we decided to talk about this in this issue.
You might be thinking, ‘you crazy ladies, your October issue is your health and safety issue! You’ve lost the plot!’
Why yes, we have, but I promise it’s not about this.
This issue goes with the brightest and the best to Plantworx in September. In fact, you might well be reading it there right now, taking a pause for the day to catch up with some industry news. And I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better platform to shout about such a prevalent industry issue.
Companies and employers out there in the big wide world of construction, I want you to listen up! Pushing any of your workers to the limit is only going to breed a loss of workers. Better working conditions keeps people coming back again and again. It’s short term loss for long term gain. All of the innovative tech in the world becomes redundant if there is no one to man it. So for heavens sake, don’t be a part of such a silly divorce from reality. Care about your workers’ health, and then you’ll certainly be richer for it, not poorer.
And Lana, for the last time, please treat yourself to a day off! You’ve earned it!

For 70 years, Volvo CE has led wheel loader innovation. The five newly revamped models; the L150, L180, L200 High Lift, L220 and L260, are engineered to enhance productivity and efficiency and are packed with intelligent solutions.
In addition to a fresh new design, these hard-working and versatile machines now offer faster cycle times, exceptional performance, and unmatched operator comfort across a wide array of applications, including material handling, quarrying, waste and recycling, and earthmoving.

As all industry faces mounting pressure to reduce emissions, cut noise, and comply with increasingly stringent environmental standards, the race is on to deliver smarter, cleaner, and quieter machinery. Whether it’s in low-emission zones, urban builds, or noise-restricted sites, the need for sustainable solutions has never been greater.
Enter the Merlo eWorker—a purpose-built, fully electric telehandler that brings together zero emissions, near-silent operation, and full-shift performance in one intelligent package.
Recently crowned with the Gold Innovation Award at the Royal Highland Show, the eWorker is already being recognised not just for its engineering excellence but its real-world usability. Compact, agile, and quietly powerful, it represents a major milestone in sustainable site machinery.
With an 8-hour runtime, regenerative braking, and intelligent energy management, the eWorker is proving its value in the toughest of environments, especially where space, noise, and air quality are major concerns.
Ideal for:
• Night-time operations in residential or noise-sensitive areas
• Enclosed spaces such as basements, warehouses, and plant rooms
• Urban or public-facing jobsites requiring zero-emission compliance
• Tight-access sites where manoeuvrability is critical
While many electric machines max out at 2–3.5 hours, the eWorker goes further—delivering a full shift without the need for mid-day charging. Its stop-start electric drivetrain means no idling, and in lighter-duty applications, battery life can exceed expectations.
“Industry has a vital role in decarbonising our economy,” says Shaun Groom, General Manager at Merlo UK & Ireland. “The eWorker is more than just a machine—it’s a commitment to moving materials in a smarter, greener, and more sustainable way.”

With public procurement increasingly focused on environmental performance, the eWorker positions contractors to win more work while cutting their operational footprint.
Material handling is fast becoming the proving ground for alternative power—and Merlo is leading from the front. Its biggest leap forward is the development of the eWorker, built on the principle that electric only makes sense when it can deliver a full day’s work.
“It’s still early days for electric machinery, and naturally there’s some concern around battery life,” says Shaun Groom. “Our priority was ensuring the eWorker could deliver an eight-hour runtime to meet real-world demands. One of the key advantages of electric is that when you’re not using the machine, it’s not idling like a diesel engine. That means the battery lasts far longer than many users expect.”
That said, concerns remain around longer operating days or work in remote areas or areas where electric infrastructure is not in place. Merlo is responding by introducing automotive-style fast-charging options, enabling top-ups at standard EV charging stations, such as those at roadside service stations.
The eWorker’s lead-acid batteries are not only market-proven but also fully recyclable—contributing to a lower lifetime carbon footprint.
The eWorker is part of Merlo’s Generation Zero portfolio: a growing range of low- and zero-emission machines designed to meet the sustainability demands of today and tomorrow. This includes:
• ROTO Plug & Play Hybrid: a full-size rotating handler with reduced emissions
• eCINGO: a compact electric tracked carrier for indoor or noise sensitive urban operations
Merlo is also actively developing additional electric and hybrid machines in the 3–4 tonne class—proving that the company is not just building electric one-offs, but laying the groundwork for a clean, scalable fleet.
“Merlo hasn’t yet committed to any single diesel alternative,” says Shaun. “But as battery technology progresses, we see real potential for expanding our electric machine line up in the 3–4 tonne class to deliver the same all-day performance we’ve achieved with the eWorker.”

Merlo’s commitment to sustainability runs far deeper than its product range. At its headquarters in Piedmont, Italy, the company is setting new benchmarks for eco-conscious manufacturing.
Merlo Group 2024 Sustainability Highlights:
• 1,150 MWh of solar energy produced
• 750 tonnes of CO₂ avoided—equivalent to planting 4,500+ trees
• Over 30 industrial recycling presses in operation
• 90% energy savings achieved through factory-wide LED upgrades
On top of this, the plant uses smart systems to manage energy, water, and lighting, with ongoing investments in clean logistics, digital documentation, and more efficient production methods.
In the UK, Merlo’s Ringwood base is putting these values into action:
• Rooftop solar powers operations and EVs, with surplus returned to the grid
• Hybrid company vehicles now standard
• Recyclable packaging and greener freight options adopted across logistics
“These are not isolated initiatives,” Groom emphasizes. “They’re part of a strategic shift to embed sustainability into everything we do—from supply chain to factory floor to final delivery.”
At Merlo, sustainability is not a trend—it’s a guiding principle.
“It’s about more than machines,” says Groom. “It’s about how we build them, power them, and run our business. It’s about responsibility—to customers, to communities, and to future generations.”
From shutting down workstations to conserve energy, to designing the next generation of zero-emission handlers, Merlo’s team is making cleaner choices every day.
Merlo’s message is clear: the future of construction is already here – it’s electric, efficient, and environmentally responsible - and at this year’s Plantworx, the eWorker will take centre stage as a beacon of what’s possible when innovation meets environmental responsibility.

From solar-powered cabins to hydrogen excavators, this new feature aims to show what a greener construction site really looks like –and where the gaps still lie.
The UK’s largest working construction event in 2025 is getting a major new addition in 2025. When PlantWorx returns this September at its new home in Newark Showground (23rd – 25th September), visitors will find something different alongside the usual mix of excavators, attachments, and kit in action: a live, off-grid site setup that brings together the latest low-carbon technologies already in use on UK jobs.
Dubbed the Site Sustainability Showcase, and backed by sponsor Prolectric in association with the Construction Planthire Association (CPA), the new feature is being described as a practical, joined-up look at what’s possible today – and what isn’t yet. Designed in collaboration with hire companies, OEMs, site operators, and government, it’s a working demonstration zone backed by practical insight and honest discussion — helping separate what works from what still needs work.
“We’re not here to paint a perfect picture,” said Joanna Oliver MBE, part of the PlantWorx organising team. “The Showcase will present a working site environment using technology that’s already out there. But just as importantly, it’ll be a place where we can discuss where more support is needed – whether that’s infrastructure, guidance or availability of equipment.”
The Showcase will include a range of live kit: electric and hydrogen-powered plant, battery energy storage systems, solar lighting towers, hybrid generators, and plug-in welfare units –all operating side-by-side.
Headline participants include Flannery with a 20-tonne electric LiuGong, Plantforce with its hydrogen-converted Kobelco SK210 and a mobile refuelling unit, City Lifting with a plug-in hybrid crane, and Explore Plant & Transport showing an electric Ammann roller and Faresin telehandler.
Speedy Powered Access will exhibit its hydrogen boom lift, while Templant Rental will supply a Stage V generator truck with charging capability. Battery power for tools and small equipment will come courtesy of Instagrid, with Hiboo, via Halomec, providing live telematics data across the site.
Prolectric’s solar-powered ProPower and ProCharge units will form the backbone of the setup, supplying energy to compact plant and off-grid welfare. According to innovation lead Owen Pearson, the company’s goal is to make off-grid solar and battery systems a realistic option for more sites. “We’re using real data from recent projects, like our road scheme in a designated dark-sky area, to show how these systems perform in practice — not just in theory.”

No sugar-coating the challenge
Visitors will also be able to see how these different systems work together. “The Showcase is all about integration,” added Oliver. “We’ll be linking solar hybrid generators to battery storage, charging compact machinery and hand tools, and providing fully solar-powered welfare cabins.”
It’s not just about the kit. The CPA’s Luis Bassett, Decarbonisation & Sustainability Manager, will be on hand to lead discussions around power management, telematics, and data. His message: don’t let the hype override the reality.
“We’re focused on practical guidance for our members – and that includes acknowledging where diesel is still required,” said Bassett. “But there are opportunities to reduce diesel use now, and we need to provide the tools to help contractors make informed decisions based on their site conditions.”
That’s also why the Showcase is being positioned as a space for dialogue, not just display. Across the three days, briefings will be held for government officials, regulators, local authorities, and environmental bodies to help shape expectations and share insights from the frontline.
real machines, real trials
The spotlight will also be on hydrogen –not just the theory, but live examples from recent field trials. Ulemco, specialists in hydrogen conversion, will be at the event alongside Flannery and Plantforce, discussing the Element 1 project. The government-backed trial saw 20-tonne excavators running on green hydrogen produced by GeoPura, deployed on active sites for BAM and Skanska.
Ulemco MD Amanda Lyne explained how the machines were dual-fuel converted to run on diesel if hydrogen wasn’t available – avoiding downtime, while delivering a cleaner burn and less soot. “This isn’t about perfection – it’s about progression,” she said. “The more we can prove it works, the faster the industry can adapt.”
Plantforce Commercial Director Chris Matthew agrees. “We’ll be bringing one of the converted Kobelco machines and the hydrogen refueller to the show. Our goal is to give visitors real insight into what’s been achieved, and what it means in practice – from fuel delivery and usage data to onsite performance.”
Buyers want proof, not promises
Dan Thompson, MD of Power and Energy at Speedy Hire, stressed the importance of demonstrable results. “We’ve already got 20 hydrogen fuel cells on our fleet and are supplying more HVO than ever. But if you want wider adoption, you need to build confidence. That means showing it working on a real site, collecting data, and sharing that insight so others can follow.”
That approach is reflected in the CPA’s work on new guidance for power management and telematics, aiming to help contractors and hirers better understand energy demands and reduce wasted capacity. “This isn’t about picking between solar or diesel,” said Bassett. “It’s about using the right mix for the job and being smart with how you manage it.”
A show with substance
More broadly, PlantWorx 2025 is shaping up to be a heavyweight event. Sixteen of the world’s top 50 construction equipment manufacturers – including Caterpillar (represented by Finning), JCB, XCMG, Kubota, HD Hyundai, and SANY –
are confirmed, accounting for more than 30% of the global Yellow Table.
They’ll be joined by Manitou, Fayat, Shantui, Takeuchi, Lonking, Sunward, Hidromek, Merlo, Yanmar – and now Zoomlion, the fast-growing Chinese OEM continuing to make international strides.
Together, these names represent a significant endorsement of the UK event at a time when competition for global trade show attention is fierce.
Over 300 exhibitors are booked, with a strong turnout expected from the attachments sector, including Rototilt, Miller, Auger Torque, Worsley Plant, Holp, OKB Attachments, Attach UK Ltd, BPH Attachments, Arden Equipment, Digga Europe, Con Mech Engineers, and Movax.
Simon Frere-Cook, PlantWorx Exhibition Director, summed it up: “This event gives contractors and hirers the chance to see equipment working as it would on their site – and speak directly to the people behind it. The Site Sustainability Showcase is a natural evolution of that idea – not a sales pitch, but a way of exploring what works, what’s coming next, and what still needs fixing.”

Ren and Phil make the trip to Warrington to chat Sustainability and Health & Safety with Sunbelt Rentals.

Sunbelt Rentals is one of the biggest rental equipment providers in the UK and a part of the Ashtead Group; a global leader in rentals. Due to its size and success, the advantage of ‘Reach’ is often found in conversation regarding their unique ability to impact the market, gather valuable data, and, overall, push the industry forward as a whole. But it’s not just about good business: It’s clear they care about using this market position to give back to both society, and the environment.
I sat down with Mark Keily, Health, Safety & Sustainability Director, and Hannah Pascoe, Head of External Communications, to chat about - would you believe it - Health, Safety, and Sustainability. We discussed their latest initiatives and innovations - being that bridge between OEMs and customers - and learned about a few exciting projects currently under way, that you’ll be seeing the fruits of very soon. This was one of those conversations that left me confident in Sunbelt Rental’s position at the vanguard of equipment hire and a little inspired by the good they’re doing.
(And the new tartan-style Sunbelt socks they’ve designed are pretty darn cool, too - fab job Hannah!)

RR So, straight off the bat, can we get a top view of sustainability at Sunbelt Rentals, and then we can zoom in on some of these?
MK We’re committed to supporting our customers with the net-zero transition across the sectors we operate in and we’re backing that with substantial promises. We’ve pledged to reach Net Zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050, with a tangible roadmap and near-term 2034 intensity reduction targets. We’re already ahead of target, having achieved a 41% reduction in carbon intensity from 2018 levels, and a further 6% carbon intensity reduction in FY25 against our new 2024 baseline. And not only that, so far, we’ve invested £204 million in low and zero-carbon emissions equipment across our whole business. Meanwhile, 91% of our company cars are now EV or plug-in hybrid, and there will be no diesels left in our car fleet by the end of this year.
RR That’s quite a lot achieved! How does Sunbelt consider a topic as large as Sustainability?
MK So for us, sustainability is one of the key components of our 4.0 Strategy, our five-year growth plan. Alongside this, we have our sustainability strategy - Our Planet - inspired by a clear purpose: to transform lives and lead positive change across the rental industry to deliver a better future. We feel it’s important to keep moving ahead with the trends to provide sustainable and innovative solutions to our customers.
RR And are you addressing all Scope emissions or just direct ones?
MK All three. While Scope 1 and 2 are more easily measured, and we’ve reduced them significantly already, Scope 3 is where we’re focusing next and continuing to support our customers and suppliers. We’re building on our long-term partnerships, tracking equipment lifecycle data and introducing more telemetry across our fleet to give greater visibility across the supply chain.
RR What do some of these sustainable pushes look like?
MK For years, we’ve been encouraging customers to pair battery storage units with generators to power their temporary site accommodation power needs efficiently. Traditionally, they’d look at the total requirements of a site based on a worstcase scenario. For example, when everyone returns for a break and the demand spikes, risking the electricity to trip as there’s not enough power. To avoid this, they often over-spec the size of the generator, even though the peak demand is only required for a short duration. As a result, the generator will end up running all day, consuming a lot more power and burning more fuel than necessary.
RR What changed?
MK The Ukraine War was probably the tipping point. When we saw the spike in fuel prices, coupled with the switch from red diesel to white diesel, all of a sudden, our customers were looking at how much they’re spending on fuel. And coupled with the sustainability requirements to lower the emissions, our ability to design a sustainable solution, it just makes sense.

Reducing carbon emissions is possible with our low-carbon and zero-emissions solutions

RR You’re also exploring the use of HVOs, right?
MK We’ve been supplying HVO to customers for a number of years. And we were the first RFAS accredited hire company in the UK to be able to prove that the HVO we’re purchasing is coming from sustainable food stocks.
HVO, we feel at the moment, is a transition fuel to help to move us along that journey whilst, appreciating that in five years’ time, that’s going to look something different to how it does today. We’re trialling HVO in a number of our own locations and for our road-going fleet because that will help us to reduce our own carbon emissions.
RR Is Hydrogen also part of the sustainability picture?
MK It is, we’ve successfully worked with our customers on different hydrogen trials. But the supply of hydrogen is the challenge at the moment. It’s something we’re committed to supporting our customers with and we’ll work through, over the rest of this year and the next couple of years, to help make it happen.
When we complete our trials, we’re learning about the requirements for hydrogen, and we’re also providing that guidance back into the industry. While also collaborating with different businesses and suppliers, so they can also learn from our trials. We always like to share our knowledge. A, because it’s the right thing to do, but B, we feel that it brings other people up.
RR Rising tides lifts all boats.
MK Exactly. We’re fortunate, as we’re a large company with more resources than some of the smaller companies, so we do feel it’s absolutely incumbent on us to give back and to support others.
RR So ‘The Green Switch’; this campaign incorporates these changes, right?
MK Yes. It’s all about considering the action we can all make in our business practices, both for our customers and our business. Our solutions are on-site, now, helping customers cut emissions by up to 80%.
RR Can you tell us some more?
MK The Green switch is effectively like a light switch. In a lot of parts of our business, it’s easy, it’s quick and it can be quite efficient, and it can be safe and cost effective. Examples include using A-rated cabins and Eco Lync, which manages the energy, intelligently and makes sure it’s drawing the power and limiting power so you’re not pulling too much. There’s other switches that our customers can make like the smaller excavators we’ve got and electric telehandlers that go up six metres, as a couple of examples. Perfectly sustainable and effective from a customer perspective in terms of use and expected hours. You can get on it, and it’s just like any other machine, except it’s low carbon, more efficient, quieter, and to be honest, it’s a better experience all around. And if needed, we have the technical experts in each of the businesses to refer back to or for customers to speak to.

One of the other parts within the campaign is the education of the customer. We’ve got lots of case studies, real life examples where we can say, “if you make this change now, this is what you can save”, just to show them how clear the switch can be.
RR It’s not a gamble.
MK We’ve also been building a Carbon Dashboard, a carbon calculator powered by telemetry and Power BI which would give real time access to our customers to allow them to see quality data from the database on emissions that they’re using on their sites. In the future, it will also give them the opportunity to be able to look for alternative equipment for their site that produces less carbon.
RR This would help site managers make informed decisions.
MK The reports will include the bottom line in terms of carbon and will be able to look at idling hours on equipment - that’s a huge draw on fuel consumption.
A lot of our equipment is connected through our telematics platform and that’s growing year on year to ensure we can provide data back to our customers. Currently we have 20 thousand connected assets that will pull the data through into the carbon dashboard for our customers to be able to analyse.
To ensure we’re providing our customers with accurate guidance, we worked with the European Rental Association (ERA) to develop guidance for carbon reporting for the hire industry. And collectively we created a standardised approach for reporting on carbon from equipment, working with other rental companies around the world to pool all of the data. By setting credible benchmarks for equipment, even if you haven’t got any telematics or any run time hours, you could still go into the ERA report and look at the Cat’ class for the

equipment that you’re renting and say, “this is the average upstream production emissions (cradle to gate), as well as the average usage emissions per operating hour, the average fuel consumption L/h and the average engine operating hours over a rental day,” and it’s credible data that’s being used across the world. The idea is to have all rental companies reporting customer emissions in the same way.
RR Is this carbon dashboard already out and accessible?
MK We’re in beta testing mode at the moment. So, we’ve got it. It works. And we’ve launched it with a select number of Tier 1 customers who are giving us valuable feedback. This will be ready to launch later this year after testing.
RR I can imagine many a customer is eager for this! What else are you working on at Sunbelt Rentals?
MK My team also looks after Social Sustainability, which we’ve grouped into three different areas. We’ve got Social Environment, Social Mobility and a new programme called ‘Sunbelt Gives’, which we’ll be launching in September.
RR A lot going on!
MK So, under Social Environment, ‘Forests with Impact’ is the major programme we support as a business. We’ve all heard of the challenges prisoners face coming out of prison: can’t get a job, got nowhere to live, go back into reoffending. We helped to set up a CIC and have been collaborating with a number of stakeholders and tier 1 customers, but also with the prison services as well, to develop a programme that links the social perspective with an environmental perspective.
In Cumbria, we are working with HMP Havverigg to bring ‘Forests with impact’ to life by effectively taking seeds into

saplings and eventually growing them into trees, to then be taken out into the forests around Cumbria, but also over other parts of the UK. The programme is giving prisoners hope and giving them a trade in Forestry and Agriculture, while we’re giving back to the environment by growing trees that can be used for planting around the UK. Although the programme started in Cumbria, that’s now spread into other prisons in Leicestershire and we’re hoping to take the project over to East Anglia later this year.
We also work with HMP Sudbury on our Trakway Work Programme. Through this programme, we have set up a temporary workshop in the prison and provide prisoners with the necessary training and the skills to be able to repair the panels and put them back into service, supporting our circular economy business practices. This allows for our trakway and barriers and fencing equipment to be provided with a second lease of life, rather than being scrapped, as they may have been in the past. Again, this goes back to giving prisoners hope and a purpose.
RR Contributing to the Social Mobility avenue?
MK Our teams also have a work experience programme called the ‘Beacon Skills Academy’. We’ve been working with a number of schools over a period of a year, we help the students through interview skills, give them business acumen and help them to understand how businesses work. There are a select group of the students who are then invited to complete paid work experience for Sunbelt Rentals. It’s a structured programme giving them real life skills and upskilling to be better prepared for when they come into the workplace. There are lots of different activities they undertake over the week. And then we give them a project, to design, build, and then pitch to a number of the Sunbelt Rentals
executive board members, including myself, for funding to build a housing estate. It’s kind of our ‘Dragon’s Den’. We had over 130 students who we supported through the work experience programme and 35 who pitched their ideas to the Dragon’s Den. You can really get a sense of everything they’ve learned throughout the year and how to bring it all to life.
Our Social Sustainability team is quite small, but the reach is very large. A few years ago, we set up Regional Social Sustainability committees and we provide these groups with both support and a budget every year to invest in their local communities.
RR Could you give me an example?
MK One of our regional committees brought the idea of supporting the ‘Rebuild Site’ in Cumbria, a CIC, not for profit, where they take in materials from construction sites and sell or hire them back out to the public at a reduced rate. It’s equipment that would have ended up being recycled or in landfill. We supported them financially, but we also supported them with their business model and with our Operational Excellence team.
RR And you have ‘Sunbelt Gives’ rolling out soon. Can you explain that?
MK So, everybody in our business, for a number of years now has had opportunity to take two days off, paid, to go and volunteer in their local community. Sunbelt Gives builds on this, it gives every employee in the UK and Ireland a £200 kitty, to either use to match fund a charitable giving or, if you volunteer, say 16 hours, £10 an hour, there’s £160 there to help support that charity that you’re volunteering with. This is all part of our plan to give back to the communities in which we live and operate.

RR Last time Becks and Lorna visited, they got to see the Overwatch system at work on a scissor lift.
MK That was a good example of listening to our customers, understanding what their needs are and working on innovative new solutions. Nothing existed.
Secondary guarding has been available on boom powered access for a number of years. But there’s been no at scale solution to trapping and crushing on scissor lifts. So, we worked with the OEM to find a solution to solve the issues that the customer had. It’s a great success story because now it’s becoming a product that’s been mandated by our customers, not always in the product name Overwatch, but in terms of secondary guarding for scissors.
RR Sometimes it just makes sense!
MK Another one that we’ve been working on is with Towable Welfare Units. It might sound like a really simple innovation: Welfare units can roll away when unhitched from the vehicle or when the stabilisers are not deployed or retracted in the correct order with the handbrake.
So, again, we work with our suppliers on a solution - and this is something we’re just launching to our customers to be able to retrofit - and we’re not going to take all the credit for it as our supplier has done a lot of the legwork.
The solution is simple. It’s basically an interlock system that works in one order. You can’t retract your stabilisers until the breaks are on. But just simple little things like that can make a massive difference so we’re mandating that now for all of the new equipment that we bring in onto the fleet and retrofitting it to the equipment as well.
So, that’s an example of collaborative innovative working where multiple customers have experienced an issue. If there isn’t a solution, we put our stake in the ground and say,”Right, we’re going to find a solution, find the right partner to work with.” They help us. We help them. It’s a win-win for everybody.
RR Do you feel like being the size Sunbelt Rentals is, it gives you a unique opportunity to problem solve these problems and then see an outcome?
MK To be honest, it’s the most enjoyable part of my job because you’re solving problems for the future and making it safe for everybody regardless of who they work for, where they work, or what they do. And we are in a unique position because we have the people to do it, the skills to do it and the ability to work with suppliers to make these innovative changes.
This November we will be hosting an innovation, sustainability and health and safety event and we want to use our position to work with our customers and suppliers by setting up a number of workshops on particular projects or topics that we think, there could be some challenges in, working with our customers, bring in the associations we work with and our

suppliers to talk around the subject. We will be listening to our customers about what the challenges they currently have are. We’ll then take those away. We can’t commit to solving everything that gets raised but what we’ll commit to is trying to find a solution. That solution might take us three months, it might take us three years, but we’ll look to do that. That’s going to be our commitment through those two days.
RR So your approach to health and safety is a proactive one.
MK Yeah. We think, from our position, it’s really important. It’s good for business. And good for society. I worked in construction 18 years before I moved into the rental sector. I’ve seen too many accidents in construction that are just totally avoidable because it’s the wrong type of kit or the application’s wrong but it’s just been, “Let’s make do, because there’s nothing else available. There’s nothing better.” Well, let’s try and find something better.
And this effort can be seen in some of our statistics:
1. RIDDOR Rate: 2022-2025 overall % Reduction: -36.36%
2. Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR): 2022-2025 overall % Reduction: -34.38%
3. Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR): 2022-2025 overall % Reduction: -73.45%

RR Does the sheer size of Sunbelt Rentals provide any useful insights?
MK We’re in the situation where we can gather a lot of intelligence, data and solutions about how we operate with our customers and learn from past events.
RR Have you got any ways of extending your reach in terms of safety?
MK We have a team of regional safety professionals and we’re setting up a transport fleet safety team as well, so that’s going to be new into the second half of this year.
If our customers have a particular requirement or a particular issue, we’re more than happy to share our experience and support them on site. One of my team will go to meet and support them either before they have an accident or sometimes, unfortunately, it’s following an accident but then, we’re not only there to investigate it but to help to prevent other incidents from happening in the future.
As well as that, we actively work with our customers by hosting events and sit on multiple industry forums including the European Rental Association, IPAF and Hire Association Europe.

RR Can you tell us about your Engagement For Life health and safety programme?
MK Our Engage For Life programme is an Ashtead Group health and safety programme which aims to create a culture of safety within our business. It is centred around three areas including culture, community and commitment. It’s all about making safety personal, taking it beyond following rules and regulations to move to a culture where our people do things because they’re the right thing to do, and understand why. We have been running this specific programme over a three-year period and currently there’s 480 people on that programme, with our target to make every teammate a safety ambassador.
Additionally, we host safety weeks across our business every year.
And we recently hosted a half day meeting with our executive team, going through safety conversations that matter for our people and customers with myself and the lead from our health and safety consultant agency, DEKRA.
Additionally, we train our safety teams to be able to deliver this programme regionally across our business, bringing together everyone from different areas of our business. And that’s good from several perspectives: It gets our teams out of their normal daily routine of being in a depot to focus on health and safety and it gets them to meet people they may have never spoken to directly.
RR What is Safety Week all about?
MK Safety Week is about taking a moment out of your normal day-to-day routine to reflect on what safety means to you and how our actions can impact ourselves, our teammates, the general public and our families.
We have a topic for each day and produce videos and briefing documents to be delivered by managers across the business each day. This year we created a video about being under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the workplace and the dangers of distracted driving, these have been viewed by over 55,000 people. They’re very hard-hitting videos that make you stop and think about your actions. It does change your day-to-day perception on safety.
We also have a day called ‘Safe Day In The Life Of’ where we had our 100 senior leaders take a day out in November to visit our depots and our people. One of our team went out with one of our hoist installation team and others experienced a day in the life of traffic management operatives. It’s all about getting our people out into those environments, not to check up on what people are doing - because we expect people to do in the right things - but to learn and appreciate some of the challenges that, we have as a business, and then bring that back and ask “How can we improve?”
RR I can see this Observation app is on the Apple and Google Play stores. Can you explain how it’s used?
MK We have an internal observation app where you can raise a good practice, or you can raise a near miss. It could be a simple thing like, “The lights in the yard have stopped working. Can you get them fixed?” It gets logged, and the Safety Team sees all of them. The depot managers get a week to fix it. We track it all and we escalate it. It gives us great visibility, but we also give £2 to charity for every one of the observations that are raised.

Sometimes when we’re notified of a health and safety issue with our equipment, we’re able to use our data from our observations app to show where these issues have risen from and work with our OEMs to create an innovative solution to the problem.
RR It’s clear that Sunbelt take Health and Safety seriously, and you make the most of your resources to do this.
MK There’s so many things we do as a business. Safety is our leading value and it’s truly embedded into every part of our culture. We take action every day in our practices to protect our people, customers, communities and suppliers and do believe that if it can’t be done safely, it won’t be done. This continues through to our daily safety checks, risk assessments and toolbox talks across our depots. We also support the mental wellbeing of our teams with over 80 trained mental health first aiders, a dedicated wellbeing Hub and a 24/7 employee assistance programme. To reflect the importance of safety across the business, we have a dedicated Safety category in our annual Hall of Fame awards. This is our annual event that recognises and rewards our teammates who truly live by our value of safety and those who go the extra mile to support our customers and each other. The teammates who are selected as our value champions, also get a week-long company funded trip of a lifetime to the US to thank them for setting the standard for others to follow.

Driving the success of the businesses we support – this is how we do it.
You’ve read how we got here – now discover what truly sets us apart. There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to Plant Parts.

Behind every perfectly matched final drive or hard-to-source swing drive is a network of innovation, obsession with quality, and relentless customer dedication. We’re not just selling parts – we’re shaping the future of heavy machinery maintenance.
Here are the powerful reasons why Plant Parts should be your go-to partner in the construction equipment world. No fluff – just hard facts, innovation, and results.
Behind every part we ship is a story of technical brilliance and precision — and at the heart of that story are Phil and Andy. Our in-house technical team is the unsung engine room of Plant Parts. With decades of combined experience and an authentic commitment to accuracy, these two are redefining what it means to support a parts inventory system. They don’t just keep the system running — they rebuild it from the inside out.
Whether it’s a Final Drive, Swing Drive, Main Pump, or Slew Ring, Phil and Andy begin with the core: the technical drawings. When off-the-shelf won’t cut it, they use their wealth of knowledge and our vast data library paired with our bespoke technical tools to find modified solutions that guarantee a flawless fit the first time, every time.
“Genuine quality doesn’t need to carry a ‘genuine’ price tag. Through expertlevel cross-referencing, our technical team identify OEM-compatible internal components, enabling us to offer the same (or better) quality at a much more competitive rate.” Richard FinchDirector

Every day, our team go through new inquiries from our sales team. Where others see problems, they see opportunity — identifying solutions that aren’t even listed in our system yet. This quick-response, custom-solution mindset is part of what keeps us agile in a fast-moving industry.
They don’t just choose suppliers — they vet, audit, and monitor them. Our ISO9001 certification means nothing slips through the cracks. Every shipment, every part is inspected with a microscope of standards that ensures total consistency and customer trust.
From final drives to swing drives, we don’t just react — they plan. With purchasing lead times that stretch up to 18 months, they forecast stock levels based on market trends, historical sales, and machine knowledge, ensuring we’re never caught short. In short? They are the heartbeat of our innovation. Without them, there’s no “Plant Parts difference.”
When you invest in high-quality parts, you expect certainty. That’s why we built The Rig — a completely bespoke, in-house testing facility that’s as unique as it is powerful.
This isn’t an off-the-shelf testing system. It’s purpose-built to push repaired and reconditioned hydraulic parts to their limits.
Every component that goes through our workshop is tested, but The Rig in particular has increased our capacity to load test the hydraulic motors.
Because trust is earned, not assumed. The Rig ensures that every part will be tested, verified, and certified to meet (and often exceed) original manufacturer standards. And this isn’t reserved just for new customers — our testing service is open to everyone: new or existing clients alike.
We made the investment in The Rig because we believe in our parts — and we believe you should too, without having to hope it works once it’s on your site.
(Full launch info coming soon — but trust us, it’s going to be a game-changer.)
We get it — finding the exact part you need can feel like trying to crack a safe with a blindfold on. That’s why we have an extensive and comprehensive catalogue system designed to take the guesswork out of parts sourcing so our team can ensure you get exactly the part you need.
Whether you’re looking up an OEM reference, model number, or machine make, our sales team can guide you directly to the correct part with pinpoint accuracy. No more time wasted trawling forums or making calls that go nowhere.
With thousands of parts and machines catalogued, we empower both first-time buyers and seasoned plant managers to get what they need fast and confidently.

The company began life in December 1992 under the leadership of Terry Barton, a man with a vision. Operating from a small yard with a fleet of 15 ageing machines Southern Hoist Services set about becoming one of the most respected hire companies of today.

At the time there were very few companies offering hoist rental and installation, and there were no training courses or qualifications for such work, as it was a very niche market. Health and safety on sites was much less than today, and hoists provided a safe option to manual handling at height. By employing local people from mechanical backgrounds, the role of an Hoist Installer was simply a “learn on the job” role.
As a small specialist hire company, the fleet ranged from 150kg SWL up to 1200kg SWL capacity servicing clients across the South East and London from their base in Southampton.
In a rapidly growing industry SHS soon developed a strong reputation for the service and supply of hoists to the industry, supporting contractors on small projects in the local area.
Sadly Terry Barton passed away suddenly and the business was purchased by Claude Fenton Plant Hire in 2004. The investment provided further opportunity for growth and, with the backing and support of a larger company, SHS could drive forward full steam ahead with his vision. By adding larger hoists to the fleet, expanding the coverage area and bidding for major projects the team moved from strength to strength.

Director, Kirsty Archbold-Laming, was quick to seize the moment, with the team winning flagship projects and increasing the fleet size. The customer base quickly grew, with many of the main contractors in the industry using SHS directly.
Kirsty Archbold-Laming, Director at Southern Hoist Services, had this to say: “I am also involved in several committees and work groups throughout, including Construction Plant-Hire Association (CPA), Construction Hoist Interest Group (CHIG), IPAF UK & Ireland MCWP/Hoists, IPAf Rental + and British Standards Committee MHE/6 for Construction Hoists.”
As a trusted supplier, offering support, guidance and expertise, SHS are honoured to be involved in the Blenheim Palace restoration work, supplying 3 large hoists for the duration, including public access to the viewing area on the roof.
Fast forward a few years, the market has expanded at speed, with more new builds, restoration/regeneration projects and increasing skyscrapers. The UK has seen the need for more equipment on sites, and hoist selection is often one of the last considerations, however by offering guidance to clients and helping them plan the project SHS continues to grow!
The company’s ethos of dedication, investment, development and commitment to training shows no sign of slowing down. Assisting industry associations, manufacturer development and continued support for their clients has seen the company grow further and expand its territory. The working areas expanded, covering nationwide which in turn has also taken the company to international projects.
As a trusted supplier SHS not only covers the UK but has provided projects in France, Netherlands and Italy.
The firm now has a fleet of over 120 hoists, including passenger/ goods and transport platforms, and prides itself on the company’s reputation not only within construction but also including projects in the event/entertainment industry, these include Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and Mission Impossible film sets, the Ryder Cup, Cheltenham Cup and various Royal occasions.
Not only this, but Kirsty had always said that one day, she would have a pink hoist, but lockdown unfortunately brought forth difficulties, as it was particularly hard on charities who could not

hold their events to raise money. Kirsty says: “Having lost my mum in 2011 to breast cancer, and doing the London Moonwalk many times since in her memory whilst raising funds, I decided that we would raise money in construction to help the charity, and so Penny was born. Every time she is hired, 20% of the hire revenue is donated to cancer charities, and the amount of people that meet me and say “you have a pink hoist?!?!” is quite astonishing. Very proud of our Penny, and customers even request her, as she makes them happy too.”
Also following on from the success of Penny, her big sister “Pamela” recently made her debut on the Nightingale Wing of Winchester Hospital - the request came from a longstanding client for a larger pink hoist for the charity and SHS were only too pleased to continue. In an incredible twist, a chance meeting in 2024, IPAF met Penny for the first time and have recently launched the PAINT initiative. Simply put it is a pledge from rental companies to dedicate a piece of equipment (repainted pink of course!) to raise funds through hire for Breast Cancer charities - from little acorns grow mighty oaks.
In addition to the development of the company, Southern Hoist Services is also a founding member of CHIG (Construction Hoist Interest Group), one of the specialist groups formed through the Construction Plant-Hire Association (CPA)
The group was formed in 1996 and has grown to 60 members today with rental companies, manufacturers, training providers, end users and health and safety advisors. It is an open forum to discuss problems and work together to find a resolution, whilst continuously improving the industry. Working with manufacturers to understand the customer needs and legislation to provide suitable equipment with safety at the forefront.
With annual meetings for all to attend, and many Work Groups ongoing, members give their valuable time and expertise to produce Best Practice Guidance, develop qualifications and discuss innovations.
With the wealth of expertise in CHIG, the sharing of knowledge with other associations, such as NASC (Scaffolding Contractors), Build UK (project contractors) and IPAF is a backbone for the construction industry. More on that in a moment. It really is simple - put all our differences aside to work together on issues and common values to make the industry better for all and improve standards in the UK.

SHS, along with other specialist hoist companies, championed a way forward for training and skills in a small but vital part of the industry, developing NVQ standards for hoist installers. As a founding member of the Construction Hoist Interest Group (CHIG), the safety standards and skills set have been developed to provide a safe environment for all involved. Kirsty has been the Chair of CHIG since 2012 and is the only female to hold the position since its inception back in 1996.
She said: “I am so proud of CHIG and the wonderful group of people who give their time and effort to support the industry. Being in a male dominated role had its challenges when I started over 30 years ago, but to see how far we have come and the mutual respect shown between hire companies, safety professionals, manufacturers and the like is inspirational. It’s a different world to when we first started but the work CHIG has put into safe practices and assisting fellow members has been invaluable.”
Working closely within the work groups and with manufacturers directly has afforded the opportunity to design and develop models to suit the UK market, and as the UK has the strictest health and safety standards, this shows commitment from everyone. Current Guidance documents are available for download free from the CPA website www.cpa.uk.net
In addition to creating Best Practice Guidance, British Standards, Qualifications and Innovations, CHIG found there was a real need to educate contractors on equipment. With the increase in MCWPs, they were often mistakenly used in the same way as a typical construction hoist. This began a collaboration with IPAF over 10 years ago to produce a joint guidance document to ensure each piece of equipment was used by the contractors correctly With dedication from members through the work groups joint training courses have been developed to help users and rental companies. The Construction Hoist Operator and the MCWP & Hoists for Managers courses provide much needed education of sites for planning, selecting the correct equipment and highlighting the need for trained personnel to operate the machinery.
As we all know there is a skills shortage, and now the latest course has been launched for Hoist Installer training. This will help to attract people to a wonderfully diverse industry and give them the skills and understanding to enable them to undertake the qualifications sooner than expected. It is a role that should not be undertaken without the necessary knowledge, health and safety must remain the most important item at any time. This is a starting

point for entrants into the industry, which will lead to the existing higher qualifications CHIG developed with NVQ Qualifications. The qualification provides a high standard of knowledge with health and safety at the forefront.
The company is very proud to have nominated the first Hoist Installer (NVQ Level 2) for CPA Stars of the Future award, and even more so for their employee Hayden Chappell winning the award. It is a fantastic event held annually by CPA to celebrate the achievements of trainees and apprentices, and highlight what a wonderful industry it is to work in, with so many positions available. It’s easy to see the future of construction by what we have achieved so far:
• The expertise and co-operation between rental companies, manufacturers and HSE has improved the industry and created a safer environment.
• Manufacturers have received assistance in developing equipment for UK markets to comply with the highest standards
• The collaboration between associations will spread the standards expected in the UK and perhaps on a global scale to ensure continued improvements in safety.
• Southern Hoist are also proud to be the first Hoist rental company to achieve IPAF Rental +.

18th-19th June, 2025, Plant Planet headed off to Warwickshire to attend our first Rail Live show! With sustainability at the heart of the show, Rail Live offered construction, rails, and so much more.
Not only was it bursting with people and machinery on the stands, Rail Live also hosted many talks with guest speakers in the Safety Theatre tent. The talks were very insightful and really added to the atmosphere. This show was also the perfect opportunity to meet with new companies as well as see familiar faces. It was all about making connections, and that’s what Plant Planet does best! With the sun blazing down on us, we lathered ourselves in suncream and filled up our water bottles and were ready to seize the next couple of days.
We visited Brokk, the world’s leading manufacturer of remote-controlled demolition machines. Being the only Network Rail approved robotic manufacturer, Rail Live was the perfect show for them! Here, they took the opportunity to demonstrate the versatility of their unique machines whilst also referring back to Rail Live’s theme of sustainability. On show were their First Green Electric Loaders together with the Brokk 70+.
The Brokk 70+ is a part of their Brokk SmartPower+ range, the latest industryleading generation of robots. This range of products’ strengths lay in endurance, operator productivity, and intelligence, thus creating the best performance on jobsites and construction projects. With good endurance, the machines are massively reliable leading to increased uptime. And when it comes to intelligence the machine features augmented sensors, data processing power, and over-the-air upgrades. As a result, Brokk states that this latest “cutting-edge innovation” is set to revolutionise the world of remote-controlled demolition technology.
Also, at Rail Live, Brokk displayed their VacEx (Vacuum Excavators) units, even having demonstrations of the remote removal of ballast. These excavators have a specialised solution: they can safely create suction holes in the ground before then removing the debris and materials from the machine-made-holes. This makes the job more efficient and compliant with Health and Safety rules.
Not only do Brokk perfectly execute their visions for the best results possible on-site, it’s also clear that their main mission is to create the best innovative technology that will revolutionise both the construction and demolition industries. And seeing all of this on display at Rail Live was fascinating!
Plant Planet headed off to the UK’s largest rail exhibition, Rail Live. With 7,000+ rail professionals, 300 exhibitors and 50 expert speakers, we were in for a treat for our first time at the show!

It was beyond lovely to see our friends at Construction Planthire Association (CPA), as it always is. Here, we were able to catch up with them, see how they’re getting on and what they’re doing for the construction and plant-hire industry. And Rail Live was no different!
This show allowed CPA to further promote their stance as an industry trade body and resource centre. Their attendance showcased their technical guidance, updates on safety, training, apprenticeship schemes. The CPA also provided the show’s attendees informational and advisory services for plant-hire companies, especially rail-hire members via the Rail Plant Association (LPA).
It’s always a great day when we get to see CPA. See you again at the CPA Gala in November!

As a specialist supplier of transport and plant-hire services to a wide range of industries including construction, rail, aerospace and nuclear, it was obvious that Explore was going to have an extensive range of great products to showcase!
Explore have always supported the rail industry with what they do, so Rail Live was another opportunity to show that connection. As a result, they have invested in a new, high spec fleet of Road Rail Vehicles (RRVs), equipped with cutting-edge technology and sourced from the industry’s leading suppliers.
Rail Live was the perfect opportunity for Explore to further emphasise their customer satisfaction as a result of their high quality RRVs and attachments. Their products can undertake any track maintenance, renewals, Overhead Line Engineers (OLE), and structures or construction work. No project is too big or too small for Explore!
From ensuring rail workforce safety to powering infrastructure projects sustainably, Garic’s main goal is to help operators stay on track and deliver success every time on-site. Garic has three main focuses: welfare, energy and environment. As a result, Garic is the first choice for companies across the infrastructure, public sector, and construction sectors, ensuring their sites run smoothly, safely, and sustainably. As with Rail Live, sustainability is at the heart of what they do, even saying that sustainability is “in (their) DNA”.
Their first product on display was the Eco Cabin+ 24. This cabin is used for higher functionality, environmental impact, user comfort and efficiency. These cabins include a canteen, office, drying area, safety area, two toilets, and a generator room as well as a fully CDM-compliant, lockable changing area. The Eco Cabin+ 24 has an EPC rating of A, and is recognised for its energy efficiency and sustainability. And as it is primarily powered by solar, this unit can reduce fuel usage and emissions by up to 95%. I mean, what’s not to like?
Also on show was the Solar Power Frame. These panel frames provide a straightforward solution for supplying solar power to welfare cabins and units. Made from solid steel, this frame can fit onto any 24ft x 9ft cabin with ISO corners, and can generate up to 3.2 kW of power. As a sustainable power

solution, the Solar Power Frame minimises generator run time, which therefore cuts down on fuel costs and carbon emissions.
Lastly, the Armadillo 18 Eco+, a product that is at the heart of Garic’s environmental approach because of its low power requirement, combined with their Microgrid technology. This technology captures, stores, and supplies solar energy to power the unit. It also includes a 10-person canteen, drying area, and 2 full flush washrooms! Not only this, the Armadillo 18 Eco+ has a 55-litre tank dedicated to collecting and storing rainwater for toilet flushes, and an additional 20-litre tank that supplies fresh water.
It was great to meet Garic at Rail Live, and it was really insightful to see their product range!
Continuing the solar power theme, we also visited our friends at Prolectric! Leading up to the event, Prolectric took to socials, clearly keen to show off their products tailored perfectly for the rail sector. They teased what products they were showcasing by saying they were taking “silent solar tower lights”, “powerful off-grid battery systems”, and an exciting new BESS unit (battery energy storage system) towable by one person and delivering up to 10 kW.

Prolectric’s rail-tailored products include:
- ProCharge BESS (new towable 10 kW system)
- ProPower Solar Hybrid Generator (single- and three-phase): Their diesel-hybrid generator system for off-grid and temporary rail site power
- ProRXM Solar Lighting Tower: Designed for rail applications where space is limited; a solar-only temporary tower light
- ProTemp Temporary Solar LED Site Lighting: Column-style solar LED lighting for site compounds and access roads.
- ProTrack Battery Link Lighting System: A portable battery-powered lighting link solution used on trackside and walking lights
With an extensive range such as this, it’s clear that Prolectric and Rail Live go hand-in-hand. And not only was it great to see all of their fantastic products on display at the show, it was also great to connect and catch up with the team again!
It was an exciting show for XWatch Safety Solutions (Xwatch)! Not only were they right next-door to the water bottle refilling station (so they were easily the most hydrated stand) Rail Live was also their chance to launch the brand new XW5-R! The XW5-R is a new rail-specific version of its proven XW5 system that is tailored for RRVs and on-track operations. It also

supports Any Line Open (ALO) working under overhead line equipment and includes telematics via XW-Insite for real-time fleet safety monitoring. It integrates height control, slew limiter, and Rated Capacity Indicator (RCI) into a compact, robust unit compliant with RIS-1530-PLT Issue 7 and EN15746, and achieves Performance Level D safety certification. And not only was it just launched and on display, Xwatch also held a demonstration of the brand-new product so people could see it in action!
Also on their stand was the XW-Insite system, within which the XW5-R pairs well, as it is included as standard with the new product. The XW-Insite is a fully integrated telematics platform that delivers diagnostics, safety data, fuel usage, and operator behaviour insights in real time.
It’s safe to say that Xwatch were certainly busy at Rail Live and had a tremendous response to their new launches. It was great to see!
Our first trip to Rail Live was beyond exceptional and great fun too! Not even the sweltering heat that melted us all could stop us and interrupt our enjoyment. Experiencing a whole new side to construction, getting involved with the rail industry and seeing how it works and runs, was truly insightful.
It was great to see everyone enjoy it just as much as we did, and it’s clear to see that Rail Live 2025 was a very successful event indeed.

In an industry built on foundations, blueprints, and meticulous planning, cybersecurity might seem like an abstract concept, far removed from the tangible world of steel and concrete. However, as the construction sector increasingly embraces digital transformation – from BIM and project management software to smart sites and connected supply chains – it has also become a prime target for cybercriminals.
The sheer volume of sensitive data handled by construction firms – including intellectual property, financial details, employee information, and critical project plans – makes them a prime target for malicious actors. A successful cyberattack can lead to devastating consequences: project delays, significant financial losses, reputational damage, and even safety risks if operational technology is compromised.
The Imperative for Robust Cybersecurity Gone are the days when a basic antivirus sufficed. Today, every construction business, regardless of size, must adopt a proactive and robust cybersecurity posture. This isn’t just about protecting your data; it’s about safeguarding your entire supply chain, from architects and engineers to subcontractors and clients. This is where Cyber Essentials accreditation becomes not just beneficial, but increasingly essential.
Cyber Essentials: Your Foundation for Digital Security
Cyber Essentials is a UK governmentbacked scheme designed to help organisations protect themselves against
a wide range of common cyberattacks. It provides a clear, actionable framework focusing on five key technical controls:
1. Firewalls: Securing your internet connection.
2. Secure Configuration: Ensuring your devices and software are properly configured and secure.
3. User Access Controls: Managing who has access to your data and systems.
4. Malware Protection: Protecting against viruses and other malicious software.
5. Patch Management: Keeping your devices and software up to date.
Achieving Cyber Essentials demonstrates a fundamental level of cybersecurity maturity, proving you have essential defences in place.
Why Cyber Essentials is Crucial for Construction Tenders and JOSCAR For construction firms, Cyber Essentials is rapidly moving from a ‘nice-to-have’ to a ‘must-have’, particularly when it comes to securing new business:
• Winning Tenders: A growing number of public and private sector tenders now explicitly require Cyber Essentials certification as a prerequisite. Without it, you could be immediately disqualified, missing out on significant project opportunities. It signals to potential clients that you take data security seriously and are a trustworthy partner.
• JOSCAR Accreditation: For those operating in the defence, aerospace, security, and space sectors, JOSCAR (Joint Supply Chain Accreditation
Register) is vital. Cyber Essentials is a foundational requirement for achieving and maintaining JOSCAR accreditation. Demonstrating this baseline security is crucial for participating in these highvalue supply chains.
• Supply Chain Assurance: Beyond formal accreditations, clients are increasingly scrutinising the cybersecurity practices of their entire supply chain. Your Cyber Essentials certification reassures partners that you are not a weak link that could expose their data or operations.
• Reduced Insurance Premiums: Many cyber insurance providers now offer more favourable terms or even require Cyber Essentials as a condition for coverage, reflecting the reduced risk associated with certified businesses.
Beyond meeting requirements, Cyber Essentials genuinely reduces your risk. It instils a disciplined approach to IT security, safeguarding your intellectual property, finances, and reputation. It’s about building a secure digital environment as robust as your physical projects.
At First Computer Services our approach is to support customers in making the best decisions to deliver seamless it support that enables you to focus on what you do best. In these challenging and complex times with regular challenge to your IT security selecting the right trusted information technology provider becomes an essential. If you would like a conversation with real experts who are diligent and fundamentally care about you please get in touch.

Across the UK’s construction and plant sectors, tackling fuel consumption and emissions has become a top priority. A major, but often overlooked contributor, is unnecessary engine idling – especially in colder months when operators keep machines running simply to stay warm.
Eberspächer UK, specialists in thermal management for commercial and offhighway vehicles, have developed a proven solution: compact diesel-powered heaters that provide fast, efficient cabin warmth without needing to run the machine’s engine.
By fitting an Eberspächer heater into plant machinery, operators can stay warm while switching off large-displacement engines that would otherwise burn through fuel at idle. The heater uses only a minimal amount of diesel, dramatically reducing idle time, fuel waste, and overall machine wear.
The benefits for plant owners and operators are clear:
● Fuel savings: Reduce diesel use during idle periods by up to 80%.
● Reduced engine hours: Prolong the life of machinery and lower servicing costs.
● Sustainability impact: Contribute directly to Scope 1 emissions reductions for owners, and Scope 3 reductions for plant hire companies.
● ESG alignment: Support sustainability reporting and help meet emissions targets under tightening environmental regulations.
Our systems are already trusted by major OEMs and are backed by Eberspächer’s UK-wide technical support and installation network. Whether you operate a single machine or manage a national fleet, these heating systems are a practical, low-cost step toward improving operational efficiency and sustainability. For years, the hire desk has been overlooked, a patchwork of bolton modules, legacy software, and systems that haven’t kept pace with the needs of modern plant hire companies. What should be the operational heart of your business has become the biggest bottleneck.
We’ve spent the last six years building tools to digitise the lifting and plant hire industry, from easy-to-use digital timesheets to asset management and QR-powered document access. And now, we’re going after the beating heart of it all: the hire desk itself.
Let’s be honest. The current options are… tired. Most hire desk systems on the market today are slow, bloated, and confusing. They weren’t built for how people actually work on the ground. Instead, they feel like a Frankenstein’s monster of features nobody asked for, stitched together over decades of product creep, and is somehow very expensive?!
• Load times are painful. Some systems still rely on Crystal Reports. If you’ve ever tried building one, you’ve probably aged a year doing it.
• Interfaces are clunky, outdated, and unintuitive. Even the software providers can’t tell you what half the parameters do.
• The process isn’t joined-up. You quote in one place, raise the hire in another, track it in a spreadsheet, and invoice from somewhere else entirely. Because of this, you end up using lots of paper and holding too much information in your head. And the cost? Wasted time, frustrated staff, lost jobs, missed revenue and blocking your company’s true growth.
Imagine this instead:
• A CRM that helps you quote customers, send contracts and close deals, all in one place.
• As soon as the quote is signed, it automatically becomes a live hire contract. No rekeying, no delays.
• Jobs are scheduled with full visibility, deliveries, collections, operators, inspections, all linked to the same job reference.
• A daybook built to work across mobile and desktop.
• Easy to use mobile app for capturing times, checks, return inspections, and real-time updates.
• Invoicing? Seamless. Accurate. Connected to the same flow from start to finish.
No spreadsheets. No manual stitching. No room for errors.

Just a single, connected system. Built for hire companies. Built for how you actually work.
We’re Not Just Building It. We’re Building It With You. We’ve spoken to dozens of companies. Some of the best operators in the business. And they’re all telling us the same thing: “We’re still stuck gluing everything together. Nothing out there does it all… and does it well.”
That’s why we’re building something better. And we’re building it with the people who’ll actually use it.
At Vertikal Days, we’re lifting the lid on our next chapter: a new, end-to-end hire desk platform. Designed from scratch. Modern, fast, and genuinely joined-up. Not another bolt-on. A fresh start.
We’re looking for forward-thinking companies who want to shape this nextgeneration plant-hire software with us. Early access. Real influence. Built around your workflows, not someone else’s template.

UK Power Networks owns and operates the cables and substations delivering electricity to 8.5 million homes and businesses throughout London, the South East, and East of England.
Contact with overhead power lines or the underground electricity network is a risk that cannot be underestimated, carrying the potential for severe injury or even fatality. Accordingly, every activity—from breaking ground and operating heavy machinery to making routine deliveries—demands a thorough risk assessment that includes the identification and marking of all overhead and underground electricity cables.
Taking the time to check for both overhead and underground services using detailed plans and on-site observations is a vital safeguard for the wellbeing of everyone involved. As part of your preparation, always ensure that disconnections are requested well in advance of demolition work, and that temporary supplies are properly arranged when needed to keep your site both powered and safe.
Empowering your team with knowledge and visible reminders—such as UK Power Networks’ free safety stickers and materials—helps foster an environment where safety is a shared responsibility designed to protect both you and your colleagues. Safety resources can be placed on plant equipment or offered to customers hiring machinery —these are available for free.
Remember, in the event of an emergency, immediate action is crucial: stop work and call 105 without delay. Check out the points below to make every workday a safe one:
• Plan. Allow time before starting each job to identify the locations of both overhead and underground cables by requesting plans from the network provider or www.lsbud.co.uk, and ensure that the plans are understood. Share this information proactively, especially with visiting drivers and contractors so no one is caught unaware.
• Request a disconnection before any demolition work starts. Failure to do so could result in an unsafe site.
• Inform all delivery operators of the

location of power lines before deliveries are made to site. Depending on the work involved and the type of cable you’re working near, you may need to temporarily cover the power line (also known as shrouding) or notify your local distribution network operator.
• Always assume overhead powerlines are live, even if they have become damaged.
• Adopting safe digging techniques, such as those outlined in HSG47, is critical before using any mechanical excavators or tools. Avoid using forks and picks, instead use spades and shovels with insulated handles. Look around for anything in the vicinity that
would have an electrical service such as street lights, CCTV cameras, or meter boxes and identity where the cables are.
• Know the reach and height limits of all machinery and take steps to avoid encroaching on unsafe clearancesuse barriers and prominent warning signs at all times. To learn more about UK Power Networks please visit: www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk

The CESAR Scheme, the UK’s official security and registration system for construction and agricultural machinery, is on the brink of an historic achievement— delivering its 700,000th system to the industry. Since its launch in 2007, CESAR has become the most successful initiative of its kind anywhere in the world, trusted by leading manufacturers and embraced by contractors, farmers, and plant hire companies alike.
Powered by Datatag ID Ltd’s proven multi-layered forensic marking technology, CESAR provides each machine with a permanent, unique identity. This identity is recorded on a secure database accessible 24/7 by police and law enforcement, making it possible to quickly confirm rightful ownership and aid in the recovery of stolen equipment. The system combines visible ID plates, RFID transponders, Datadots®, and forensic DNA, creating a powerful deterrent to thieves and a robust recovery tool when thefts do occur. With machinery theft continuing to cost the UK economy millions each year, CESAR has delivered tangible results. Police and insurance data confirm that CESAR-marked machines are four times less likely to be stolen and six times more likely to be recovered than unmarked equipment. This success has
led to widespread adoption by major brands including JCB, Kubota, Manitou, John Deere, and New Holland, many of whom fit CESAR as standard on their machines before they leave the factory.
The near-700,000 milestone represents not only the Scheme’s scale but also the strength of collaboration between manufacturers, dealers, the insurance sector, and law enforcement. Every CESAR system fitted is another step towards reducing organised machinery theft and protecting the assets that keep the UK’s construction and agricultural industries moving.
Viki Bell, CEO of the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), which owns the CESAR Scheme, added: “Reaching this incredible milestone shows just how far the CESAR Scheme has come in protecting our industry from the devastating impact of machinery theft. The CEA is proud to see so many leading manufacturers fitting CESAR as standard, and we remain committed to working with Datatag, the police, and our members to keep vital construction and agricultural machinery safe from criminals.”
Kevin Howells, Managing Director of Datatag ID Ltd, commented: “Approaching 700,000 CESAR systems is a testament to the trust and commitment of our manufacturing partners and the industry as a whole. Every single system fitted is a statement that theft will not be
tolerated. CESAR is proven, it’s effective, and it’s protecting the machinery that builds our infrastructure and powers our agriculture.”
The CESAR Scheme is owned by the Construction Equipment Association (CEA) and supported by the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) and the Association of Manufacturers and suppliers of Power generating Systems (AMPS), all of whom recognise the Scheme’s critical role in safeguarding vital equipment. It has also been embraced by police forces across the UK, with specialist officers trained to identify CESAR-marked machinery both on the roadside and in ports, helping disrupt the illegal export of stolen plant and agricultural equipment.
As the Scheme prepares to celebrate its 700,000th system, plans are already in motion for new developments that will expand CESAR’s capabilities even further – continuing the fight against theft and ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of machinery security.

While skilled service technicians are at a premium, technology innovation can make these roles nearly three times as productive as they were just a few years ago.
Global labour markets finally enjoyed a healthy rebound in 2023 following the massive disruptions of 2020, with unemployment dropping to record lows as companies across all sectors began hiring at a frenetic pace. That pace has slowed significantly in 2025, but certain long-term trends and challenges remain, particularly demand for skilled labour.
As more Boomer Generation workers retire, there are simply not enough skilled people among the younger generations to take on the same roles. Even some conservative estimates say that there will be only one skilled mechanic to replace every seven Boomer-aged mechanics who retire. Moreover, and more challenging still, even during highemployment periods, very few young adults today choose to become service technicians, resulting in a long-term
shortage of tech personnel. So the question for hire companies and other equipment owners increasingly is: How do we get the most out of the labour force we have?
How do technicians spend their time?
Back in the early 2000s, SmartEquip conducted a study across North American hire companies to analyse how many hours on a given day a technician spent servicing equipment. All elements of the process were considered, including the number of work orders generated across a company’s locations and the time logged for each repair. This information was weighed against the number of parts requests, both from internal stock as well as from outside sources.
Shockingly, these highly trained and expensive service techs frequently spent less than 50% of their hours actually
holding a wrench in their hands. How was this possible? And what were the majority of those hours spent on?
Prior to working on a particular machine, a service technician’s hours are usually consumed by locating relevant information from manufacturers, dealers, and from internal service departments to determine which repairs were needed. The first steps of this hands-on job involved consulting hundreds of different information sources, across paper, “glass” (computers, CD ROM, microfiche) and other sources. Often the information was inadequate, outdated, or even missing – long before the job was started. After identifying the right parts, service technicians needed to check whether they were in stock anywhere in the company or need to be ordered. If an order was required, they had to request permission (requisition) and identify the right source, all while adhering to both

supplier and company pricing, terms, and purchasing rules. Add in the need to locate equipment service history and warranty status before even getting to prioritising tasks. This painstaking way of working was time consuming and inefficient – but thankfully, it did not need to remain this way.
Investing in technology to make technicians more efficient Service technicians are scarce across the industry, and typically are among a rental company’s or contractor’s most skilled and highly compensated employees. Any time they spend on these laborious, low-skill tasks will raise the cost of repair and diminish equipment availability, thus cutting into revenue and earnings.
While service labour markets remain tight, investing in technology and innovation is a powerful counter-measure which can dramatically shift efficiency across the equipment lifecycle – reducing costs and increasing uptime. Against this skilled labour shortage, new management systems and platforms are helping techs perform better and with significantly improved “wrench time”.

Here are just a few ways technology is improving service efficiency:
• Automated delivery of service support: Integrating live electronic parts and service catalogues with rental management systems enables manufacturers to deliver service and parts information to technicians, intelligently customised to the serial number of the equipment they’re servicing. Equipment owners utilising SmartEquip Procurement are able to dynamically map their asset numbers with make, model and serial number, and then access the always-current service documentation, including supersession information, onto the technician’s mobile device, saving hours of searching.
• Streamlining of administrative workflow & transactions: Systems integrations further allow hire companies and contractors to automate the creation of workflow documentation. When technicians select their parts, the system autopopulates work orders and purchase orders, which are then submitted electronically to the supplier with zero labour effort.
• Tracking total cost of ownership: Because each repair and parts order is automatically associated with a specific equipment unit, fleet owners are now automatically tracking TCO information at the individual-asset level. Not only will this allow for the assessment of profitability at the unit level, but it will also help optimise identifying the point in time when equipment should be sold.
• Back-office administration upgrades: These “smart” solutions update and enforce correct pricing for both buyers and sellers, eliminating otherwise very common three-way mismatches between purchase order, invoice, and receipt. This dramatically reduces a company’s “accounts payable” burden for service technicians and the back office, and by extension mitigates corresponding “accounts receivable” challenges for suppliers.
• Automation of service scheduling: Applications that provide “smart” scheduling by matching technician specializations to service priorities are growing more sophisticated and are increasingly tied to transactional capabilities, where anticipated needs will trigger pre-emptive ordering of parts without requiring technician intervention, resulting in optimised working hours.
• Repair prediction: Equipment sensor data is designed to predict equipment failure. Not only are equipment sensors reporting in real-time how a unit is faring, but the layering of statistical methods to predict machine failure is proving quite promising. Some companies are partnering to connect sensor data with statistical inference to predict equipment performance and failure, saving hours in the service and repair process and equipment downtime.
A more satisfied, productive workforce Returning to the “time-and-motion” study from a quarter century ago, we see that recent innovative advances in technology can help the typical hire business dramatically reduce company-wide labour time associated with service and repair –freeing up tremendous wrench time. Yes, technicians are hard to come by these days, but technology like SmartEquip Procurement allows them to perform more than twice the work they did 20 years ago, by guiding their service work and by eliminating time-consuming and extraneous tasks.
Freeing up wrench time and decreasing equipment downtime are critical drivers of profitability. But let’s also not forget the technician’s personal satisfaction with how their job is performed: no service technician chose their trade to do administrative work. Allowing these skilled and valuable workers to focus on what attracted them to their job in the first place is a significant win.

KLEENOIL, a leader in oil and diesel filtration technology, is set to bring its latest innovations to life at PlantWorx 2025, with hands-on demonstrations taking place at Stand DB10. Visitors will get the rare opportunity to witness live fuel cleaning in action, including on-site tank cleans using the company’s newest product – the KLEENFUEL ELAIS.
Trusted across construction, plant hire, and heavy industry sectors, KLEENOIL’s systems are engineered to reduce engine wear, extend oil and equipment life, and boost fuel reliability — key concerns in today’s cost- and emissions-conscious environment.
At this year’s show, KLEENOIL will present:
• KLEENOIL by-pass filtration systems for hydraulic and engine oil,
• The KLEENFUEL diesel tank cleaning service, and
• The new KLEENFUEL ELAIS – a portable, plug-and-play solution for tackling diesel contamination on site.
Have a machine on-site at the show? The KLEENOIL team is offering free diesel tank cleans using the compact ELAIS system – right there at the show. With no fuel removed, the system extracts water, sludge, and fine particulates, restoring fuel condition with zero disruption.
Visitors can examine before-andafter sample bottles, a clear and often surprising indicator that “clean-looking fuel” might not be clean at all. It’s a powerful visual that highlights just how essential modern fuel filtration has become.
As the use of biodiesel blends increases and diesel storage durations lengthen, fuel contamination is now a top cause of injector damage, breakdowns, and DPF issues. KLEENOIL’s on-site fuel cleaning solution offers a cost-effective, preventative measure to keep machines running smoother, longer, and cleaner.
Whether you’re a fleet manager, plant hire operator, or maintenance professional, the KLEENOIL team will be available to

answer questions and provide practical advice on how their solutions can integrate into your existing fleet or service offering.
Stop by Stand DB10, see the systems in action, take away real-world evidence –and grab a Haribo while you’re there.

Danfoss Power Solutions announced the launch of its Thorx CLM 5 C cam lobe motor at the end of July. Designed for drum drives on road rollers and other compaction equipment, the CLM 5 C hydraulic motor joins the S motors for skid steers and the recently launched T motors for compact track loaders in the Thorx lineup. The CLM 5 C motor features a robust, novel design that eliminates leakage, enables smoother road finishing, reduces service issues, and extends component lifetime. The motor exhibits total efficiency of 92%, and it is interchangeable with other drum drive cam lobe motors for ease of integration.
The Danfoss Thorx CLM 5 C motor’s bearing arrangement eliminates leakage issues while offering an extended service life. The Thorx motor features two strong taper roller bearings that prevent shaft deflection and thereby eliminate hydraulic oil leakage at the shaft seal. This arrangement withstands higher loads than cam lobe motors with ball bearings, offering a longer lifetime.
The Thorx motor’s balanced rotary group offers smoother low-speed rotation, delivering better road finishing and a smoother road surface. In motor designs with an unbalanced rotary group, the number of pistons under pressure varies by +/-20%, creating a leakage variation that results in a speed ripple when the machine is operating at low speed. With 12 pistons and nine lobes, the Thorx motor’s rotary group has a constant number of pistons under pressure, reducing this low-speed ripple by up to 90%.
The CLM 5 C motor features total efficiency of 92%. This high efficiency level reduces heat generation, extending the service life of components such as seals and bearings.
Like other motors in the Thorx family, CLM 5 C features a strong, integral parking brake situated at the center of the motor, maintaining a compact envelope.
The durable multi-disc brake eliminates the risk of jamming associated with dog clutch brakes, commonly used in other cam lobe motors. It also enables safe and reliable emergency braking multiple times throughout the machine’s lifetime. A mechanical brake release simplifies brake disengagement for towing, with the tool conveniently located within the motor casing.
“When we designed our drum drive motor, our goal was to create a strong cam lobe motor with no leakage, regardless of equipment size. We’ve accomplished that and much more, increasing motor efficiency and enabling better road finishing,” said Chris Shrive, Head of Cam Lobe Motors, Danfoss Power Solutions. “With the launch of our 5 C Thorx motor, Danfoss now has a full portfolio — including axial piston and orbital motors — that can meet the need of just about any drum drive application.”
The CLM 5 C motor is interchangeable with other drum drive cam lobe motors, simplifying sourcing and replacement. The Thorx motor features the same approximate dimensions and shape as motors commonly deployed on drum drives, as well as a hollow shaft that enables an optional through-drive. With a maximum displacement of 545 cc, the Thorx CLM 5 C motor is ideal for compaction machinery up to 3.5 tons.

CASE Construction Equipment continues to expand its compact crawler excavator range, to suit the needs of every customer, whatever the application. The latest additions to a line-up that includes more than 20 individual models, are the ESeries midi models that cover the 8-10 tonne operating weight market.
Choice
Those customers looking for a zero-tail swing design with a fixed mono boom, similar to a full-size crawler model, can opt for the CX85E, with an operating weight of 8,830kg. For businesses that prefer a boom swing solution like a mini excavator, for improved access on constricted sites, the CX90E weighs in at 9,210kg. The ultimate flexibility, with a longer horizontal reach and higher dump height, comes with the CX100E. This 10,080kg model offers a zero-tail swing design, with a two-piece articulating boom (TAB) and boom swing. If customers require additional stability and lifting capacity, the CX85E and CX90E can be ordered with an additional 440kg counterweight, which is standard on the CX100E. Mounted internally, the additional weight does not impact the zero tail swing overhang, maintaining the compact dimensions of these 8-10 tonne class machines. All three of the machines can also be equipped with an external 900kg additional counterweight if required.
All three of these excavators are powered by a 53.7kW (73hp) diesel engine. With a variable displacement hydraulic pump, there are three operating

modes available, including Economy for maximum fuel efficiency. Along with the three factory presets: Economy, Standard and Power, it is possible for the operator to program an Individual setting, adjusting the speed of each hydraulic function to suit their preference.
The machines benefit from up to three auxiliary circuits, that can be set to match the flow requirements of different attachments, to provide maximum operating efficiency and performance. Electro-proportional roller switches in the joysticks provide fingertip control of auxiliary functions.
CASE has also introduced a joystick travel mode, allowing the operator to control all tracking functions from the lefthand joystick. This is particularly useful when using the dozer blade for backfilling applications and travel. These three models are equipped with dual-speed transmission, with automatic shift-down when required, delivering perfect traction in all situations.
The operator will also enjoy the premium cab environment, with three types of seating on offer, including mechanical or pneumatic suspension and seat heating. Ergonomically-designed joystick levers with intuitive push buttons and electroproportional roller controls maximise productivity and reduce fatigue for the operator, while the multi-function computer display provides access to control menus, diagnostics and hydraulic adjustment screens.
Air conditioning components have been located within the rear roof spoiler, which rotates within the counterweight dimensions. This location maximises visibility from the cab, while rear view mirrors and cameras offer the operator an all-encompassing view around the excavator. LED lighting completes the visibility package, ensuring maximum vision in all light conditions and weather.
CASE midi excavators are built to work, and the 8-10 tonne models have wide opening access doors and a tilting cab, to allow easy access to all service and maintenance points. A reversible fan drive can be used to blow out dust and debris from the cooling pack and all filters and fill points can easily be reached from ground level.

A reversible fan drive can be used to blow out dust and debris from the cooling pack and all filters and fill points can easily be reached from ground level.
E-Series midi excavators are covered by all existing services offered by CASE and its dealers, including CASE Protect extended warranty and the CASE Care planned maintenance program. This offers various durations and application coverage, as well as payment options, significantly reducing the total cost of maintenance. These services can be combined with personalised services such as fluid sampling and periodic inspection, provided by expert technicians at CASE dealerships.
The excavators come equipped with integrated telematics modules, enabling real- time data transmission and smart alerts for dealers, customers and operators. This connectivity gives everyone useful insights into machine performance and health. CASE employs artificial intelligence and advanced algorithms to ensure uptime and enhance productivity.
For CASE dealers, this means complete visibility and remote access to machine status. Alerts, reminders, and notifications help to proactively address customer needs. If a potential issue is detected, an alert is sent to the CASE dealer with specific recommendations and actions to resolve problems before they escalate.
On the customer side, CASE offers myCASEConstruction, a dedicated app and portal that goes beyond traditional fleet management. More than just a tracking tool, it provides a centralised platform for accessing machine insights, managing jobsites, and reviewing performance reports, enabling smarter decisions and greater control over operating costs.
Towmate Trailers has expanded its LaySAFE® pipe handling solution with the unveiling of a new retrofit capability, bringing modern safety technology to existing pipe trailers - eliminating the need for full trailer replacement.
Covering the full spectrum from 90mm through to 180mm, the retrofit system delivers a full suite of LaySAFE® benefitsto older fleets, transforming legacy trailers into safety-first assets.
Originally developed to address the serious risks of stored energy and manual handling injuries in traditional coil pipe installations, LaySAFE® ensures safer and faster installations using a completely mechanical system, with no hydraulics or external power required.
Now, instead of investing in entirely new trailer fleets, contractors can simply retrofit LaySAFE® onto their existing units, improving crew protection, reducing installation time and saving operators up to £4,600 per 100 metres of pipe laid, compared to stick pipe methods.
Mounting concerns around coiled pipe safety have only intensified since the
2023 HS2 incident, which highlighted the dangers posed by uncontrolled pipe release. LaySAFE® offers a preventative solution that improves safety without adding operational complexity.
With LaySAFE® fully approved by Cadent Gas, the UK’s largest gas network supplier, the system feeds coiled pipe through a rear-mounted guide box and a series of rollers that control release, prevent ovalisation and eliminate the guesswork associated with traditional methods. The result is a reliable performance every time, with no recoil, no overstress and no compromise on safety.
Almost exactly a year on from LaySAFE®’s launch in 2024, Steve Bradshaw, managing director of Towmate Trailers, said: “Asset safety, costefficiency and regulatory compliance are all coming under greater scrutiny across the industry. LaySAFE® was designed with these real-world challenges in mind. By removing stored energy risks and simplifying the installation process, we’re giving crews a tool that genuinely makes their jobs safer and easier.
“A year on from launching LaySAFE®, we had repeated calls from contractors who wanted to improve safety across their fleets but were hesitant about the upfront cost of replacing their trailers entirely.
“That’s why we’re delighted to reveal this latest offering – a retrofit system that makes it possible to upgrade existing pipe trailers with the full LaySAFE® capability, without needing to start from scratch.
“Our retrofit system is a low-complexity, high-impact upgrade that transforms older pipe trailers into modern, safety-first workhorses. For contractors working with ageing fleets, it’s not just a cost-saving option; it’s a practical way to bridge today’s safety standards and extend the life of equipment they already know and trust.”
