Hello! Welcome to another wonderful issue of Plant Planet! As the sun is beginning to shine and the world seems a little brighter, it’s the perfect time of year to become more aware of our planet and look at it through a greener approach. Good job this new issue focuses on just that!
Firstly, you may have noticed a new name change… so, let me take this chance to welcome you to Machine Power Media! We are, however, still the same team. Darren Shelton has become our new Managing Director, and we’re so excited for this fresh, new beginning! Still the same family, just a new name. We can’t wait to share more of our new chapter with everyone, and as always, our commitment is with YOU in the construction and demolition sectors.
Our Industry Corner (written by Ren Rush) and feature article (written by Lorna Cowlin) discuss fitting topics such as reducing your carbon footprint, going net-zero and the circular economy model, showcasing the companies that are following these protocols and how, and showing how the world of construction is giving back to the planet.
The theme for this issue is important as it’s something that needs to be put into practise more. The construction sector is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions, accounting for roughly 40% of total emissions. So many companies, however, are trying to reduce this. It may be a big, tough industry, but if we all play our part and do our bit, we can thrive even more, knowing what we are doing is kind to the world we call home!
And with that, I shall wrap up and conclude, and let you guys get reading! With all the love we try to give back to the planet, and all the joy that’s had on-site, I hope you can take that all with you as the sunnier weather approaches. Here’s hoping we have some lovely weather coming our way… we certainly deserve it! Happy reading!

‘WINDBLOW’ PUTS PRESSURE ON FOREST OWNERS AND TIMBER SECTOR: SAYS MCHALE PLANT SALES
Alesser-known dimension to the work being done by McHale Plant Sales is their role as distributors in Ireland and Northern Ireland for Komatsu forest equipment.
Included in them are harvesters (see photo) used to cut trees, strip surplus shoots and branches, and finish them into lengths ready for hauling to sawmills. A complementary Komatsu line are the articulated forwarders used to load and carry cut trees from the forest floor to the perimeter for onward collection by specialist hauliers used to deliver loads by road to sawmills for conversion into timber.
A current problem occupying the minds of authorities, state and private forest owners, and independent forestry contractors alike – to whom McHale Plant Sales is a key supplier – is the urgent task of harvesting trees damaged and felled during the recent Storm Éowyn and the earlier Storm Darragh.
Apart from the extensive damage they caused to homes, buildings,
infrastructure, and power supplies on both islands, few would imagine that the impact they had in Ireland and Northern Ireland would be replicated in forests throughout England, Scotland, and Wales as they undoubtedly were.
The urgency arises from the fact that trees felled, uprooted, and lost to ‘windblow’ will rapidly deteriorate, lose condition and usefulness for conversion into timber if not harvested and processed as quickly as possible. In Ireland, industry experts put the volume of trees lost to storm damage at an estimated 11million cubic metres and possibly higher.
Apart from the pressure already placed upon them by nature, timber hauliers and forestry contractors are being overwhelmed by additional stormdamage difficulties due in the main to a shortage of trained and qualified truck drivers and specialist timber harvesting machine operators whose services, were they available, would enable contractors and hauliers to attack the problem in an even more sustained fashion.
According to Darragh O’Driscoll, Business Development Director at McHale Plant Sales “the need to develop and promote careers in the industry will become increasingly more urgent as governments look to increase state and private planting as a key element in offsetting harmful CO2 emissions and in advancing our commitment to sustainability and net-zero”.
To that end, McHale has pledged to support any campaign that Coillte, the Irish state forestry authority, or timber harvesting contractors might initiate to encourage greater interest in forestry amongst young people and promote long-term careers in the timber processing sector.

In addition to auction services, Jardine Auctioneers operates a transportation division to service customer needs in New Brunswick.
The company benefits from a skilled management team, led by Blair Sissons and long-standing employees, that have made the business what it is today.
Jardine Auctioneers’ dedicated auction site, complete with auction rooms, workshops, and extensive space for vehicle and equipment storage, has allowed the company to facilitate the demand for live auction events making it a hub for the industry it serves.
Jardine Auctioneers was founded in 1982 by father and son auctioneers Frank and John Jardine. Today the business is managed by John Jardine and Blair Sissons, who joined the company in 2012. John and Blair will remain and will be a key part of the national management team in Canada.
Derek Keys, Founder and Managing Director of Euro Auctions Group, commented: “We are a family-run business, and the ethos and values of Jardine Auctioneers resonates strongly with our own. We see great similarities in our company culture, vision, and future trajectory. As we expand our presence in Canada, we have remained focused on treating buyers and sellers equally. We provide the highest level of service, achieving true market value in our auctions, while maintaining fair commission rates for all. This basic principle has been a cornerstone of the group’s success. We are delighted to welcome the Jardine team into our auction community that share the same ethos.”
John Jardine, CEO of Jardine Auctioneers added: “This merger with Euro Auctions and joining forces with our close Canadian ally Michener Allen is the perfect fit for us all. Both Euro Auctions and Michener Allen are family businesses that share our same values and commitment to excellence and I couldn’t be more excited to expanding our global customer base, attracting both buyers and sellers from around the world and introducing them to our maritime hospitality.”

MERLO ROTO: TODAY’S ROTATING TELEHANDLER OF CHOICE
As job sites become more complex and space constraints increase, the need for versatile, high-performance lifting equipment has never been greater. Enter the Merlo ROTO series— an innovative range of rotating telehandlers that offer unmatched flexibility, efficiency, and safety. With models designed to suit a variety of applications, the Merlo ROTO is the go-to choice for contractors seeking an edge in productivity and adaptability.
A ROTO FOR EVERY NEED
Compact and Manoeuvrable: ROTO 40.16S & 40.18S
At the entry level, the compact ROTO 40.16S and 40.18S (up to 4 tonnes and 15.8m and 17.7m lift height) offer a 415-degree rotation, making them ideal for confined urban construction sites and small-scale forestry applications. They feature a simple up and down stabiliser system and are equipped with a two-speed hydrostatic 40kph transmission. Eco Power Drive (EPD) maximises efficiency by adjusting speed only when needed, reducing noise levels and improving fuel economy. EPD also integrates a self-accelerating joystick, enhancing both performance and operator comfort.
Mid-Range Powerhouse: ROTO 50 Series Stepping up, the 5 tonne lift capacity ROTO 50.21SPLUS (21m), 50.26SPLUS (25.9m), 50.30SPLUS (29.2m), and 7 tonne, 70.24SPLUS (24.2m) feature the standout 20-degree tilting cab to give the operator the best possible view of highelevation tasks.
The dual hydraulic pump ensures faster cycle times, while the continuous rotation turret and “out and down” automatic stabilisers with levelling, simplify machine setup, improving both safety and efficiency. These models take the larger ZM3 Merlo ‘tac-lock’ headstock catering to loads over five tons.
At the top end of the spectrum, the 5 and 7 tonne capacity ROTO 50.35SPLUS (34m lift height) and 70.28SPLUS (28m) come standard with CVTRONIC transmission, providing seamless acceleration from 0 to 40kph across tortoise and hair ranges. These machines are built for the most demanding job sites, delivering maximum performance with minimal operator effort.
Innovative Features for Maximum Productivity
All UK ROTO models come with a rear full-locking differential, controlled via a floor button for superior off-road traction. Well-positioned chassis steps facilitate
easy cab access, with additional engineside steps on models exceeding 21m in lift height.
Operator-Focused Cab Design
The ROTO cab prioritises ease of use and comfort, featuring:
• Simple and easy access to the cab; the door of a Merlo telehandler can lock open up to 180°. In addition, the inside of the door is equipped with a large handrail to help the operator when getting in and out of the cab
• A convenient ground-level door latch eliminates the need to climb up to secure the cab.
• Developed according to automotive standards, Merlo’s optional cab airconditioning cuts the warm-up and cool-down times in half compared to a conventional air conditioning system. The inlet vent is placed on the side of the cab, away from potential sources of dust and dirt, while inside there are 8 vents.
Inside the cab, the operator can find clear, simple controls, grouped into three functional areas
1. Machine management: stabilisers, park brake, cab tilting (where present), steering, and suspension- (where present).
2. Joystick functionality: locks and continuous flow management.
3. Safety system operation: 10” screen for profile settings and movement limitations.
Dual joystick operation: even with the left-hand joystick raised, in normal telehandler configuration, the righthand joystick will still facilitate the slew function - ideal for pick-and-carry operations, maybe even taking materials to the lift site, when the operator may be in and out of the cab regularly.
Customisation: the standard terminal allows users to set individual operator profiles. Different flow rates can be set to speed up or slow down certain functions and a movement limitation lock stop an operator accidently slewing into dangerimproving precision and safety.
Enhanced Safety Systems
Advanced safety automation features:
• Automatic stability recognition: If stabilisers aren’t fully extended – e.g. the area isn’t large enough for the legs to be fully extended, the machine recognises this and self-adjusts, restricting movement to the side where the legs are not fully deployed, preventing overload scenarios - a huge safety benefit
• ASCS (Adaptive Safety Control System): A patented system that detects Merlo Treemme attachments via a headstock disc and dynamically adjusts load charts to prevent overloads.
Versatility Across Applications
ROTO telehandlers aren’t just for lifting— they’re multi-functional workhorses. With a range of attachments, they can seamlessly transition into:
• Cranes (with hooks and winches)
• Aerial work platforms (with operator platforms)
• Material handling solutions (with specialised booms)
• Tree surgeons for safe removal of dying and hazardous trees
Remote control allows operators to control turret operations from the ground or an operator platform, making them even more adaptable for diverse job site conditions.
Traditional telehandlers and cranes can be limiting in tight, complex workspaces. A Merlo ROTO eliminates these constraints by providing:
• 360° rotation for superior reach and efficiency.
• Higher lifting capacities and extended reach.
• Multi-purpose functionality, replacing telehandlers, rough terrain cranes, and aerial work platforms with a single machine.
The Smart Investment
For contractors navigating tighter deadlines, evolving regulations, and rising costs, investing in a Merlo ROTO telehandler means:
• Increased productivity – up to 100% more efficiency compared to fixed telehandlers.
• Reduced wear and tear on job sites due to minimal repositioning.
• Greater versatility, allowing one machine to do the work of many.
Whether renting or purchasing, a Merlo ROTO telehandler delivers unparalleled efficiency, safety, and adaptability, making it the ultimate lifting solution for today’s challenging construction environments.
At bauma 2025, Merlo previewed an all-new ROTO range which will build on existing technology to deliver a host of new features set to increase safety and performance even further. The new range will be available in the UK in 2026.
WHEN TO RECYCLE CONCRETE?
If you work in demolition or construction, you know the problem all too well—concrete waste builds up fast. The more you demolish, the bigger the stockpiles get, taking up valuable space, increasing handling costs, and complicating logistics.
The solution? Don’t wait.
Recycle immediately. Every day that concrete waste sits unused, it represents lost money and wasted resources. By crushing it on-site, you instantly reduce its volume, transforming bulky debris into valuable material.
But why is reducing the volume so important?
• Turn waste into hardcore material
– Once crushed, concrete can be repurposed for backfills, road foundations, drainage layers, or even new construction projects. No need to purchase new materials when you already have everything on-site.
• Optimize transport efficiency – Loose rubble takes up too much space in a truck, often leading to multiple trips and higher fuel costs. Crushed material is compact and denser, allowing you to transport more per load, saving both time and money. Whether you’re moving material to another site or selling it, a full truck is a profitable truck.
• Eliminating the cost of transport to the landfill and the expense of purchasing materials for subbases is not only highly profitable for the builder but also an environmentally friendly practice. In fact, carrying out the recycling process with an excavator, which is often already present on-site, by simply attaching an MB Crusher Bucket is an extremely straightforward operation. It requires just one machine and a single operator, making this type of work easy, quick, and versatile.
STOP WAITING – START RECYCLING TODAY!
Stockpiling is not a solution—it’s a costly delay. With MB Crusher, you take control of your materials immediately, cut expenses, boost efficiency, and unlock new opportunities on your job site.
Stay tuned for the next episode, where we’ll explore even more ways to make construction and demolition smarter with MB Crusher.

FUNDING HELPS LEAD TO RECOVERY OF £890,000 OF STOLEN PLANT AND EQUIPMENT
Funding by the Construction Planthire Association (CPA) and other organisations has helped lead to the successful recovery of £890,000 of stolen plant and equipment in two recent police operations, says Superintendent Andy Huddleston who leads the National Rural Crime Unit and the National Construction & Agriculture Theft Team (NCATT).
The CPA is contributing £90,000 over three years from 2024 - 2026 to help fight plant equipment theft and fraud, which is costing the construction plant industry millions every year.
With additional funding from the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), Hire Association Europe (HAE), CESAR donors, insurers and other organisations, a total of £210,000 per annum is being contributed collectively over the next two years to help fund NCATT - a specialist team of police officers that cover the whole of the country to help tackle the theft of construction plant and equipment by organised criminal groups.
The funding has recently supported two significant police operations which
have helped recover large quantities of plant and equipment stolen from CPA members.
Superintendent Andy Huddleston said: “Over a 10-day period two NCATT operations resulted in multiple strikes on locations in West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire. The two operations led to three arrests and the recovery of £540,000 of stolen matting and fencing and 36 pieces of machinery valued at £350,000, all of which were taken from hire companies.
“It has also been announced that NCATT will receive £120,000 from the Home Office to help replace operational vehicles over the coming three years, something which is critical and very welcome,” he continued.
Since NCATT was formed in January 2023, the unit has experienced growing success in recovering stolen plant and agricultural equipment. In 2023, NCATT successfully recovered almost £6.3m of stolen plant and equipment. This increased to £10.5m of recoveries in 2024, and 254 arrests were made. So far in 2025, almost £5.4m of stolen plant
and equipment has been successfully recovered, and 68 arrests have been made.
CPA Chief Executive Officer Steve Mulholland said: “It’s excellent news that our funding is helping lead to the recovery of stolen plant, which is a massive problem costing our members and the wider industry huge amounts of money, stress and lost revenue. We have over 1,900 members at the CPA and we feel it’s very important that the membership funds go back towards helping them.
“Our £90,000 contribution to the work of NCATT is bringing immediate, tangible benefits to our members in preventing and detecting criminal activity and the recovery of illegally obtained plant-hire equipment,” he continued.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY BOOST FOR NORTH EAST AS MGL GROUP INVESTS IN CDE WASTE RECYCLING PLANT
One of the largest privatelyowned civil engineering and demolition companies in the North of England has announced a strategic investment in a new construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling plant, designed and engineered by wet processing experts CDE.
In a region with increasingly limited primary sand and gravel resources, a long-term strategy to ensure a consistent supply of sustainably sourced construction materials is critical to meet increasing demand.
To help meet the needs of the local market, family-owned and -operated business MGL Group has revealed plans for a new 160 tonnes per hour C&D waste recycling plant to be commissioned at the group’s recycling facility at Newburn, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Newcastle contains very small pockets of known sand and gravel deposits, most of which are of low quality and are poorly located making their extraction unfeasible and the environmental impact of such activities unacceptable.
Mark Davison, joint chief executive of MGL Group, said: “We aim to enhance our waste management capabilities by diverting high-value material from
landfill and returning that quality recycled sand and aggregate to good use in the construction industry. CDE impressed us with their expertise and deep understanding of our needs, instilling real confidence in us with their commitment to engineering a solution that will help us strengthen our own environmental commitments and deliver even greater social value for the North East.”
Between 2019 and 2021, sales of recycled aggregates rose by approximately 21% across Tyne and Wear with a three-year average of 324,000 tonnes.
Mark added: “Recycling and reusing materials will achieve significant carbon savings. It will help us to greatly reduce our overall carbon footprint and it will play an instrumental role on our pathway to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.”
According to data from the 2019 Aggregate Minerals Survey for England and Wales, the North East consumed 7.5 million tonnes of primary aggregate compared to sales totalling 7.3 million tonnes, making the region a net importer of mineral resources.
CDE business development manager, Mike Bibby said: “In a region where the availability of natural reserves is in decline, it is becoming increasingly
evident that we need to adapt a circular approach to C&D waste to channel back into the industry as much available material as possible. Yes, that means having to process more and more challenging material, however CDE’s proven waste recycling solutions are up to the task. The solution we have engineered for MGL Group will support the business to reduce its reliance on virgin sand and aggregate while ensuring a steady supply of materials to the industry, and it will help the business to produce those materials closer to source to minimise haulage costs.”

FILLING THE SKILLS GAP IN UK CONSTRUCTION
As construction sites get smarter and infrastructure needs grow, the pressure’s on to find people with the right skills, right now. But for many in the industry, the gap between what’s needed and what’s available is becoming a real challenge. A recent report* highlights the scale of the problem, pointing to lost value when businesses can’t get the skills they need.
The UK Government has responded with a £600 million investment into the sector, announced in March 2025, to help tackle the growing demand for housing and infrastructure. That’s good newsbut only if the people are there to deliver it. CITB’s latest figures suggest we’ll need an extra 251,500 workers by 2028 just to keep up with output.
That’s where targeted, high-quality training comes in.
At Pearson TQ, we help employers close that skills gap - not with off-theshelf training, but with practical, industryrelevant programmes designed around their specific needs. BIG KIT, BIG DECISIONS. YOU WOULDN’T BUY A £750K EXCAVATOR ONLINE – THAT’S WHY PLANTWORX MATTERS
From Munich to Newark: Why PlantWorx is the show that delivers for the UK market
You can buy everything online these days—from machine parts to entire toolkits—but if you’re making serious decisions about your next machine, fleet, or safety system, you want to see it in the flesh. You want to speak to someone who knows it inside out. You want to feel it in the controls, watch it lift, rotate, dig and swing. That’s why PlantWorx is not just surviving in the digital age—it’s thriving.
Now that the excitement of bauma is over and the dust has settled in Munich, attention turns to what’s happening closer to home. And rightly so. Happening from 23rd to 25th September 2025 at its new home at Newark Showground, PlantWorx is already shaping up to be the largest working construction show in the UK next year. The figures are impressive: over 300 exhibitors and 15,000 visitors are expected to attend.
However, PlantWorx isn’t about footfall or scale - it’s about hands-on experiences, meaningful conversations, and real value for everyone from site operators and engineers to senior buyers and business owners.
Unlike other exhibitions where machinery sits static on a carpeted stand, PlantWorx sets itself apart by offering live, working demonstrations. Visitors don’t have to imagine how a new excavator or machine will perform on-site; they can watch it digging, lifting, or rotating in real time –and with the corresponding operating qualifications and PPE, you can ‘try before you buy’ on many of the stands.
It’s a format that works. Whether you’re a major contractor or a small plant hire business, the show allows you to compare machines side by side, speak directly with product experts, and make informed decisions based on how something actually performs, not just how it looks in a brochure.
Exclusive machinery launches
If you want to see brand-new equipment before anyone else, PlantWorx 2025 should be on your calendar. Many machines revealed at bauma will make their UK debut at Newark Showground, but with some of the biggest manufacturers skipping bauma this time, PlantWorx will be the first place to see their latest innovations. From electric compact excavators to advanced telematics dashboards, the range of equipment on display will cover everything from day-to-day construction tasks to future-facing digital solutions.
For many OEMs and tech suppliers, PlantWorx is more than just a showcase—it’s where they meet real customers and build relationships. The show also provides a platform for emerging businesses, innovative products, and creative ideas that may not yet have reached the mainstream.
The line-up speaks for itself
Many of the industry’s biggest names—such as Finning UK, SITECH, JCB, RSP UK Suction Excavators Ltd, SANY Heavy Machinery UK Ltd, Sunward, Avant Tecno, XCMG, Hydrema, Mecalac, Kubota, Steelwrist, Hidromek, Rototilt, Worsley Plant, Xwatch Safety Solutions, Spillard Safety, Slanetrac, Leica Geosystems, UK Power Networks, Takeuchi, SHANTUI EU, Merlo, Manitou, and National Highways—will be on hand to showcase their latest offerings. Even if you recently travelled to bauma in Munich, PlantWorx 2025 is the prime chance to experience ground-breaking tech right here in the UK.
From attachments and autonomous controls to fully electric plant, the breadth of technology on show reflects the changing face of the industry. And with national conversations around sustainability, site safety, and digital transformation continuing to gain momentum, there’s no better place to see how it all translates into real-world kit and practical solutions.
Built by the industry, for the industry
PlantWorx is not a commercial show run by an event organiser— it’s owned and hosted by the CEA (Construction Equipment Association), which means it’s built for the benefit of the industry itself. Proceeds from the show are reinvested into projects that support innovation, training, and future skills. There’s also strong support for SMEs and start-ups.
The show is also a rare chance for suppliers to have face-to-face conversations with the people who operate their equipment every day. These discussions can shape product development, influence design decisions, and offer insights that simply don’t come through on a phone call or webinar.
That said, there’s still a place for digital engagement—and PlantWorx continues to support it. The next official PlantWorx webinar will take place on May 8th, hosted by Peter Haddock. Titled “The Innovation Landscape”, the session will feature guest speakers from Costain, BAM, National Highways, and Balfour Beatty. You can register at: www.plantworx.co.uk
Looking ahead—and looking further
In 2025, PlantWorx will be more than just a three-day show. It serves as a focal point for the sector. The Innovation Awards dinner returns on the opening night, celebrating standout achievements in machinery, safety, engineering, and workforce development. Meanwhile, the Awesome Operators Challenge is back by popular demand, giving skilled machine operators a chance to prove themselves in a live setting designed by Instagram sensation Fabba Welder.
Newark Showground’s central UK location, ample parking, and open space make it the perfect home for a show that puts working machines at the centre. For exhibitors, there’s room to dig, build, and demonstrate. For visitors, it’s an easily accessible venue designed for meaningful engagement—not just walking through aisles.
The countdown is on PlantWorx 2025 is where the UK construction sector comes to do business, discover what’s next, and get hands-on with the tools, tech, and machines that are changing the game.
If it’s on your procurement list, in your hire fleet, or in your future plans, chances are you’ll find it at PlantWorx. And better yet— you’ll see it working.

AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES
Partsformachines.com founder and MD, Abhishek Tanwar has a long association with the construction machinery industry, having cut his teeth in the machinery sector selling parts to Copper mines in Zambia. That started a lifelong learning about what makes various manufacturing companies tick and some of the opportunities and challenges they face.
“The construction machinery market was still very much the preserve of the machine OEMs and their dealers,” Abhishek Tanwar explains. “There is a great deal of brand loyalty, which shouldn’t be either decried or underestimated. But if you run a number of different machines and want parts, you have to go round the various manufacturers’ dealers and source them individually.
“Also, being locked into a manufacturer system might mean having to buy OE parts, when you might be depriving yourself of the opportunity to buy a good, quality part at a different price point - one that was, depending on the age of your machine, more in line with your needs.”
Rather than the bigger fleets, Partsformachines.com views the owner/operator, with up to half a dozen machines as its primary target, as they tend to have more flexibility.
Starting as an e-commerce business with 1 brand and 1000 product references in 2021 Partsformachines.com has now grown to over 250,000 products and 60 supplier partners. It anticipates growing to over one million part references by the middle of 2026 and well over 100
supplier partners - such is the strength of the response, and growth in sales, it is experiencing.
Companies who initially were sceptical, have now embraced the Partsformachines.com concept and are profiting from being part of it. “I think we have to be realistic,” Abhishek Tanwar comments, “if you are doing something different – it often takes time to establish yourself.
“We are at the forefront of the technological changes taking place in the industry, but we have seen that the construction sector’s sometimes slow in embracing change. For example e-commerce, which is now ubiquitous in our daily lives, is yet to fully penetrate our sector. But the landscape is changing.”
Partsformachines.com is embracing AI to enhance customer experience by helping them find what they need more quickly and easily. “The use of AI is now central to creating value for our customers, something which has always been at the heart of our business - as demonstrated by our 4.9/5.0 satisfaction rating” adds Abhishek Tanwar. “We are embracing AI to help drive efficiency, engagement and customer support, all of which is helping us grow in a challenging market.”
Having launched in the UK, it has always been the intention to make Partsformachines.com an international platform. The first steps came recently with the launch of Partsformachines. com for Ireland and, with the help of AI, Partsformachines.com, in foreign countries will launch, language-native, in the near future.

Certas Energy: Fuelling for the future in Plant Hire, Demolition and Construction
At a time when the construction sector faces unprecedented pressure to maximise efficiency while minimising environmental impact, one energy partner has consistently risen to the challenge. Certas Energy, the UK’s largest independent distributor of fuels and lubricants, has established itself as the go-to supplier for construction professionals who demand reliability, innovation and sustainability.
With a nationwide infrastructure of depots, tankers and staff, Certas Energy has quietly become an indispensable partner to demolition and construction firms across the country.
But what’s the story behind the distributor, and why are so many contractors choosing them to help keep their on-site machinery and vehicles running?
Building a legacy: The Certas Energy story
Certas Energy’s journey began over 40 years ago, evolving through strategic acquisitions and organic growth to become the formidable presence it is today. Operating under its current name since 2013, the company was formed when DCC Energy consolidated several regional fuel distributors under one cohesive brand.
This consolidation created an organisation with unparalleled geographical reach and technical expertise. Today, Certas Energy delivers over six billion litres of fuel annually across the UK, with a significant portion serving the construction and demolition sectors.
“Our heritage in construction fuels goes back decades,” explains Peter Cronin, Commercial Marketing Manager for Construction at Certas Energy. “We’ve grown alongside the industry, adapting our services to meet the evolving
needs of contractors. That institutional knowledge is invaluable—we understand the pressures construction firms face because we’ve been working with them through every market cycle.”
This experience has proven crucial in building trust with customers. In an industry where downtime can cost thousands of pounds per hour, Certas Energy has established itself as a partner that understands the critical nature of fuel supply.
Distinction in the construction and demolition industries
Within the construction industry, demolition presents unique challenges that demand specialised fuel solutions. Certas Energy has built a formidable reputation in this high-pressure sector over the past decade, supporting some of the UK’s most complex demolition projects.
Demolition requires machines that operate consistently at peak power, often in challenging environments where refuelling access is restricted. The financial implications of machine downtime during critical demolition phases can be severe, with schedule delays cascading through entire project timelines.
“Demolition contractors operate in a different reality compared to general construction,” notes Peter. “Their machinery is pushed to maximum capacity for extended periods. Fuel quality is non-negotiable, and delivery windows are often tight and inflexible. We’ve tailored our service model specifically to address these requirements.”
This specialisation has paid dividends. Since 2015, Certas Energy has increased its market share in the demolition sector by also being one of the largest suppliers of HVO. The sector is demanding a sustainable alternative to standard diesel and HVO is perfect for the sector. A drop in fuel with no need for modification.
Beyond the pump:
Our comprehensive list of energy solutions
While many still think of Certas Energy simply as a fuel supplier, the company has evolved far beyond this limited definition. Today, it offers a comprehensive suite of energy solutions tailored specifically for construction and demolition applications.
Its product range includes standard white diesel alongside premium fuels like GTL (Gas-to-Liquid) Fuel, which offers significant environmental and performance benefits for construction machinery. The company also provides lubricants, AdBlue, and fuel management services that help contractors optimise their energy usage.
“What sets Certas Energy apart is our consultative approach,” notes Peter. “We don’t just deliver fuel; we work with clients to understand their operational challenges and develop bespoke solutions that address their specific needs. We are now a onestop-shop for our customers.”
This approach is exemplified by their fuel management systems, such as Certas Energy’s FuelWise telemetry system, which allow construction firms to monitor consumption in real-time, identify inefficiencies, and prevent theft—a persistent problem on construction sites, as well as reduce overall fuel costs.
Case Study: Powering London’s high-rise demolition
Perhaps nowhere is Certas Energy’s impact more evident than in their work supporting major demolition projects. One standout example involves their partnership with a leading demolition specialist dismantling a 22-storey tower in central London.
The project presented numerous challenges: restricted access, strict noise and emission regulations, tight deadlines, and the high-profile nature of working in a congested urban environment. Certas Energy developed a tailored delivery schedule, providing out-of-hours fuel deliveries to minimise disruption to the surrounding area. They also supplied GTL Fuel, which significantly reduced local emissions and noise levels from the high-reach demolition excavators—a crucial factor in obtaining continued local authority approval for the work.
The fuel quality was critical given the technical demands of high-reach equipment. Any machine stoppage at height presents serious safety and logistical challenges. Certas Energy understood the stakes and delivered a solution that kept the machines running continuously throughout the 14-month project.
The project was completed ahead of schedule, with the client estimating that Certas Energy’s reliable fuel supply and technical support prevented at least seven days of potential downtime—representing significant cost savings on a project of this scale.

Case Study:
Supporting explosive demolition operations
Certas Energy has also distinguished itself in supporting the specialised world of explosive demolition. When one of the UK’s foremost explosive demolition contractors undertook the controlled implosion of a former power station in 2021, they turned to Certas Energy for the critical fuel supply.
The operation involved months of preparation followed by an extremely time-sensitive execution phase. Any delay would have significant regulatory, safety and financial implications. Certas Energy established dedicated fuel reserves exclusively for this project, guaranteeing supply regardless of wider market conditions.
“Explosive demolition is all about precision and timing,” explained Peter. “Certas Energy created a fuel security plan that gave us absolute confidence that our preparatory work wouldn’t be compromised by supply issues. They understood that this wasn’t a standard construction project where a day’s delay might be manageable—we had a nonnegotiable deadline.”
The implosion was executed perfectly, with all machinery performing as required through the critical preparation phase—a testament to the reliable fuel supply and machinery performance.
HVO’s role in construction and demolition
As the demolition industry grapples with increasing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint, Certas Energy has positioned itself at the forefront of the transition to cleaner fuels and more sustainable practices.
Their range of alternative fuels includes HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), a renewable, drop-in replacement to diesel that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel. They’ve also invested in Carbon Offset Fuel options, allowing companies to offset the emissions associated with their fuel use through verified carbon reduction projects.
For demolition contractors specifically, Certas Energy has pioneered the “Sustainable Demolition” programme, which helps firms transition to lower-emission fuels while maintaining the power output of their heavy machinery demands. This initiative has been particularly successful in urban demolition projects where air quality concerns are paramount.
“The industry is changing rapidly,” said Ollie Bradshaw, Certas Energy’s Sustainability Manager for Liquid Renewables. “Demolition firms are increasingly required to demonstrate their environmental credentials to win contracts. We’re helping our customers navigate this transition by providing practical, accessible alternatives to conventional fuels, like HVO.”
We’re helping our customers navigate this transition by providing practical, accessible alternatives to conventional fuels, like HVO.
This focus on sustainability extends to Certas Energy’s own operations. The company has invested in a modern, efficient delivery fleet and implemented route optimisation technology to reduce the carbon footprint of their distribution network.
Why contractors choose us
In a competitive market, what factors have driven Certas Energy’s success in the demolition sector?
Supply Security: With a nationwide network of terminals and depots, Certas Energy offers unmatched reliability—a critical factor for demolition projects where fuel shortages can cause costly delays and safety concerns.
Technical Expertise: The company employs specialists with deep knowledge of demolition applications, allowing them to recommend the optimal fuel and lubricant solutions for specific equipment and operating conditions.
Flexible Delivery Options: From emergency same-day deliveries to scheduled out-of-hours service, Certas Energy adapts to the unpredictable nature of demolition work. Their emergency response protocol guarantees delivery within four hours in critical situations.
Account Management: Dedicated account managers with demolition industry experience provide a single point of contact, simplifying the procurement process and ensuring consistent service levels.
Innovation: Certas Energy consistently brings new products and services to market, helping demolition contractors stay ahead of regulatory changes and efficiency challenges.
Looking ahead: Certas Energy’s future vision
As the demolition industry evolves, Certas Energy is positioning itself to lead rather than follow. The company is investing heavily in its alternative fuels infrastructure, while continuing to supply conventional diesel for businesses at a different stage of their energy transition.
They’re also expanding their digital capabilities, developing more sophisticated fuel management tools that integrate with demolition firms’ broader equipment monitoring systems. These innovations promise to deliver even greater efficiency and cost control for contractors.
“The next decade will bring transformative change to how demolition sites are powered,” predicts Certas Energy’s Peter Cronin. “We’re already working on solutions that will help our customers navigate the transition to more sustainable fuels like HVO and GTL for the next 20 years. Eventually, we will see the introduction of improved hybrid and electric machinery, while continuing to optimise their use of liquid fuels where they remain the practical choice.”
This forward-looking approach appears to be resonating with demolition firms increasingly focused on future-proofing
their operations. Many report that Certas Energy’s willingness to discuss long-term energy transition strategies has strengthened their partnership beyond mere transactional relationships.
A strategic partner for demolition firms
As the demolition industry continues to evolve, the importance of reliable, innovative energy partners has never been greater. Certas Energy has established itself as not just a supplier but a strategic partner to demolition firms across the UK. Through its combination of nationwide infrastructure, technical expertise specifically tailored to demolition applications, and forward-thinking approach to sustainability, Certas Energy has earned its position as the foundation upon which many of the country’s most important demolition projects are built. As the industry continues its journey toward greater efficiency and sustainability, Certas Energy appears well-positioned to fuel the way forward.

HOW WORKSHOPS CAN GO GREENER IN 2025
Going green in a workshop is always a team effort, but –exploring lubricants – transitioning from conventional raw materials to non-toxic materials is one of the hardest areas a garage must consider.
Workshops and garages traditionally use chemicals and fossil-based products like engine oil which are essential to their business and for the vehicle or machine to run properly. Unfortunately, these are not usually environmentally friendly products but there are ways you can identify and promote a greener culture in a workshop by working a little smarter. When looking at green credentials, you have to look at the full package. Not only the more common elements of sustainability but also right back to your supply chain and the products and services you operate within.
1. Energy
Review the efficiencies of lighting, heating, ventilation, cooling systems, insulation opportunities, water use, and pollution control. Ideas include:
• Installing solar panels on workshop roofs and depots – they often cover a wide surface area and can help generate new power to heat and light buildings and machinery and equipment.
• Harvest rain water from the roofs and collect in IBC containers. Use the water to wash and clean vehicles and other equipment throughout the year. Thousands of litres of water can be saved each year.
• Install PIR lighting so no lights are on unless they need to be.
2. Products
The choice of lubricants that a workshop uses are wide and varied but can you ensure that suppliers offer the following to help you achieve your own greener goals:
• Biodegradable alternatives – Chain Oils Tipping Oils and Hydraulic Oils are all available as viable, biodegradable options, and are extremely popular and still give comparable performance to more traditional mineral counterparts.
Plant planet talks to Witham Group’s Managing Director, Nigel Bottom, about its hard work to support UK Plant & Off Road vehicle workshops through its ‘going green’ philosophy.
Then there are innovative ranges such as Prolan Lubricants – Witham’s range of multi-purpose lubricants which uses sheep’s lanolin as the strongest, natural lubricant nature can supply. This has been captured and blended to produce a range of four viscosity oils, from light work like chain and maintenance oils to restoration rust preventers and anti-seize greases, which are not only biodegradable but extremely long lasting, non-toxic and food and water safe.
• Other Greener alternatives – In addition, there are now alternative fast-acting, biodegradable liquid floor degreaser detergents, offering ultra-powerful, deep cleaning of car workshop and showroom floors. Specifically designed to remove general dirt, tyre scuff marks, silicone film and are effective degreaser for fats, mineral and synthetic oils, and greases.
• Engine Oil Viscosities – Lowering CO2 emissions and improving fuel economy is high on the agenda of all fleet owners. Swapping lubricants to a fuel-efficient approved alternative can save more than 1.5-2.5% fuel saving for fleet owners if carried out correctly. Lower viscosity lubricant sales are on the rise and choosing the right engine oil can make a real difference to emissions and carbon impact and also for the business owner
3. Packaging
Purchasing not only fully recyclable packaging, but container plastic packing from some suppliers are now made from at least 35% recycled materials.
• Choose a lubricant supplier that offers recyclable or recycled packaging
• Recycling schemes are also available for bulk 200 litre barrels
• Partner with local recycling and waste suppliers – many schemes are available nationwide.
4. Bulk storage tanks
Workshops and garages tend to use a lot of the same lubricant products and can have piles of used plastic containers lying around the place, so consider installing bulk storage tanks.
Your lubricant supplier can advise on the best way to install the tanks. Lubricants are filled up in the colour coded tanks as required, and the tanks have sight gauges, taps, or pumps and come labelled with the different product names and their application.
Simple, clean and easy to use, these tanks help keep your working space ship-shape and avoid spills from containers. They also help avoid important oil contamination and help the environment by using less packaging. They also provide important health and safety requirements for lubricant storage. Using bulk storage tanks across all the workshops and garages in the UK would save thousands and thousands of plastic and metal containers being sent to landfill and would save on waste collection costs and administration.
5. New technology
Use a supplier where greener technologies and processes are at the fore. After all, how lubricants are manufactured is changing – this alone can be one of the most beneficial of savings to a workshop environment due to the reduction of carbon footprint levels. The necessity to improve both the time, cost, and environmental impact of the lubricant manufacturing industry, has driven Witham Group to develop and employ an innovative new process...
Blendtek, as the new process is called, removes the need for base oils and product formulae to be heated up for long periods of time using traditional gas energy. Instead, thousands of tonnes of high quality workshop oils using no heat and no agitation can be made using solar panels and a simple 25 amp plug, saving time, energy and drastically reducing the carbon footprint. To evaluate the savings to the environment, Witham have now saved over 33k tonnes of carbon emissions since using the process and heated the equivalent of over 182 homes in the UK for a year. Impressively, their overall gas consumption has been reduced by just over 83% and the technology, the energy saving statistics and the principles of the new ultrasound way of blending is now being shared with the lubricant industry.
This exciting breakthrough is all about changing the environmental impact of lubricant manufacturing in the first place. So many other environmental schemes and businesses look to offset their impact by using “carbon dumps or sinks” and investing in other environmental and climate protection projects. We have instead, come up with a way that prevents the creation of high energy use in the first place and are
proud to lead the lubricant industry with this manufacturing innovation. We believe we are the first company in the world to truly blend in a carbon neutral process. We are determined to help other blenders improve their own sustainability profiles and improve the oil industry’s reputation with substantial impact.
Green credentials – “The greenest kw of energy is the one you never use”
Witham are now the first lubricant blending company in the UK to manufacture its lubricants in a 100% carbon neutral way. The basic principle of ultrasound is to use a high-speed, micro-cinematographic sequence of laser-induced cavitations near to a solid surface. In short using a traditional blending process (similar to Witham’s old plant) using heat to blend and mix generated from gas burners and/or steam from a boiler and standard agitation (paddles) created a carbon footprint of 1962kW per 10,000 litres produced.
Using the Blendtek system, with solar panels and the ultrasound technology, Witham manufactures 10,000 litres of high quality workshop lubricating oil using no heat and no agitation, and, more importantly, the company only generates a carbon footprint of 6kW per blend. The company has slashed its gas consumption in the last few years by over 93%.
Ultimately, if everyone looked at their business to see how environmental improvements can be easily made within their business, from what they buy and from who, workshops and garages could collectively make a huge success of going green. It’s all about small steps that over time can make a big difference.
For those companies looking to improve their sustainability and supply chain choices, Witham believes it leads the way in its innovation and green credentials.
Nigel adds, “We could not have been prouder to have been awarded a new Royal Warrant by HM The King recently for the products and services we supply to the Royal Estates. This is particularly important to us as our sustainability and environmental practices are high on the agenda to receive such a prestigious accolade. We couldn’t wish for a better reinforcement of the standards we operate within and look forward to helping more businesses in future”.

Life with Lana // Chasing the Dream
Lana sits
down with Plant Planet
to discuss the idea of going after what you truly want, and what that means for her as a long-time person in construction.
It’s an interesting concept, isn’t it? Living the Dream. We hear it all the time (usually as a flippant comment to ‘how are you?’), but what does it actually mean when it comes to construction?
In short… it means a lot of different things as there is no ‘one dream’. Each individual wants something different for their career, and one such individual is Lana Edwards. And as someone who has been in the industry her entire life, there’s no one better to discuss the pursuit of the aforementioned dream. Especially as very recently, she might very well have found what she was really looking for.
Her very own machine.
“All I have ever wanted was my own machine,” explains Lana as she continues to operate her machine at her new worksite. “I grew up taking care of machines, and when you work in plant hire, you see some people abuse them. They let them get into such a dire state and I honestly hate it. They deserve more respect. Money is all very well and good. It makes the world go round, as they say. But money comes and goes. Working with my own machine has always been, and will always be my dream.”
That’s not to say this isn’t something she’d had before. Unfortunately, even when you achieve your goals, they can still be taken away. Lana is famous in the community for being Lady Lana’s operator, her very own machine that she was given when working for R O’Donnell. But when the business owner fell ill, the business closed and she lost Lady Lana.
“Lady Lana was honestly some of the happiest times of my life. She was my dream machine, even with custom pink just for me. I adored her. Losing her was incredibly hard. It was simply that I had my own space I made my own. Richard giving me that machine demonstrated that he saw something in me; he believed in me. Let me tell you, that’s so rare. Particularly after Lady Lana, I was even more set on getting that feeling back.”
Currently, Lana is working for Quinn Developments, having left Warde and Burke in order to ‘chase the dream’. Quinn Developments offered Lana the coveted machine (which has been affectionally named Lady Lana 2: Electric Boogaloo by our Managing Editor) after a conversation on LinkedIn turned into a job offer. But even with such a promise, it came with proper consideration.
“I can’t tell you how many companies have made these big, sweeping promises and not delivered. I’ll be honest, it has my back up. Especially because I was so happy at Warde and Burke. I loved my team, and I miss them so much. It’s the first time I’ve felt really torn. Had I been offered my own machine when I was at any other job, I would have been a lot less hesitant. But I’d found something at Warde and Burke I’d not often found… a proper community. However, I knew all things must come to an end, and this project at Warde and Burke would not last much longer. I felt it was time to take another stab at getting my dream.
“I had struggled to find work for a long time before Ward and Burke. I admit I am more selective about the jobs that I take, but rightly so. I think a lot of companies take their operators for granted, and I had spent a long time feeling that sting. So I knew I didn’t want that for myself again. But not simply putting up with bad behaviour left me out of work for a fair old while. Whether it was the age old ‘site hierarchy’ or a trail of broken promises, I never found anywhere I wanted to stay. Ward and Burke broke that cycle for me, and I’m so grateful for that. They just couldn’t offer me the one thing I truly wanted.”
PLANT PLANET Life with Lana Chasing the Dream
So then, the big question is, has she achieved the dream?
The machine is certainly filled with all the signature Lana touches, including a fabulous pink fluffy carpet which is a classic Lana flourish. And it’s fitted with a Steelwrist tilt rotator which she showed off to full effect as we chatted.
“I’ve definitely been bitten by the tilt rotator bug,” laughs Lana as her bucket continues to spin like a ballerina. “They’ve delivered their machine promise just like they said they would.”
So, we can check off ‘own machine’ on the dream checklist. But is that everything?
“I think I’m in the middle of an adjustment period,” explains Lana. “I’ve pursued my own machine for so long that I truly thought that would be everything to me. But I feel torn for the first time in my life.
“Warde and Burke was a family that I was so proud to be a part of. I admit, I miss them all so much that it’s weighing heavy on my heart. Of course, I know that joining a new team and finding that sense of comradery takes time. I’m not expecting to turn up to site and immediately understand the dynamic. But ‘machine’ happiness and ‘team’ happiness turn out to be two different things. My faith in companies doing as they’ve promised has certainly been somewhat restored, which I truly appreciate, but I need a bit more time before I can definitively say if I’ve achieved ‘the dream’.”
It’s fair to say then, that the long awaited dream is far more complicated than we might all have suspected. But setting goals for oneself is certainly an important part of anyone’s career journey. Whatever they might be, dreams should always be reached for. Everyone deserves to find their happiness, and simply existing is not the same as living.
“I definitely think that everyone should know what they want and go after it,” mused Lana. “Life is too short to be unhappy all the time. It takes work to get there, that’s for sure, but with the right graft, everyone can find their own happiness.”
Well said Lana. Well Said.

Executive Hire Show
Executive Hire Show is one of the biggest industry exhibition that fuses together tool equipment and plant hirers, all under one roof, and Plant Planet was back for another year!
The Plant Planet team were delighted to head back to Executive Hire Show (EHS) on 12th and 13th February for the fifth year in a row. Hosted in the Coventry Building Society Arena, this outstanding event set a new record with 2,098 hire professionals in attendance and was fully booked with 145 stands, making it a clear standout year for the hire industry. A perfect Valentine’s gift to share the love, don’t you think?
“Over two days, industry professionals connected, discovered cutting-edge innovations, and secured business deals that will shape the hire industry in 2025 and beyond.”
The focal point for this year’s show seemed to be innovation, and lots of companies (including many Plant Planet clients) were there to showcase new products they had recently launched. Exhibitors were focusing on advancing and improving, the key message being that of growth and moving forward. Executive Hire Show proving once again that it is a great event for investing in the future of hire!

Altrad Belle
Altrad Belle is an established manufacturer of light equipment for the building and construction industries, and needless to say, their stand blew me away! It’s clear that these shows can still wow me even after a year at Plant Planet. Their stand was almost defying gravity with the displays, filled to the brim with product. (Plus, they also supplied tea, coffee and cake! Anyone that offers me a brownie is instantly a friend of mine, that’s for sure!)
Once I had got my tea, MD Ray Neilson showed me round their products, including their new range, promoting the message one battery fits all. All their batteries were 82V to fit this focus, and provide all the advantages of petrol, just minus the noise, maintenance and vibrations! The products showcased were:
- PCLX 32 E+ & 40 E+: A high-performance battery-powered lightweight plate compactors, designed for professional and rental use.
- PCLX 32S E+: A high performing batterypowered lightweight plate compactor.
- DUX E+: A portable, robust poker drive unit providing effective air removal from concrete.
- MBX 08/120E+: A battery powered Mini Bowser Pressure Washer, designed for maximum mobility without compromising performance.
- MBX 12/180: Another Mini Bowser Pressure Washer, guaranteeing a sufficient water supply or cleaning tasks whilst on the go.
- PWX 08/120E+: A robust, cold water, highpressure, battery powered Pressure Washer. So no, I wasn’t swayed by the cake at all, I’m speaking the honest truth when I say Altrad Belle has it covered, and are definitely experts in their field!
“We had so many fantastic hire companies stopping by to chat and check out our new products. It was great to see so many orders placed.” Ray Neilson, Altrad Belle MD.
Avant Tecno/Leguan Lifts
Specialising in compact, versatile loaders and high-performance spider lifts, Avant Tecno appear to be untouchable. At EHS, Leguan Lifts (part of the Avant family) displayed their latest Leguan 265 crane, a brand-new model, that was launched on 30th January, which is the tallest spider lift to date! This model offers a 26.5m maximum working height, 13.6m outreach, and a 250kg lift capacity, and is the fastest 27m spider lift on the market, as it extends to its full height in only one minute, thirty-five seconds! The Leguan 265 is the ideal choice for many fleet operators, with its 45% gradeability and the Elevated Driving Position (EDP) function; it offers extra height without compromising on efficiency and overall performance.
This is a huge breakthrough for Avant and Leguan, further emphasising how they always deliver on high-quality, highly durable and efficient machinery. It’s clear to see why they are an industry-leading company!
Construction Plant-Hire Association (CPA)
It was lovely to pop over to the CPA’s stand to see some very familiar faces with Brian Jones, Lisa Collins and Katie Kelleher all representing the well-known organisation. Greeted with hugs and smiles, the CPA always bring such a positive energy wherever they go. With 85 years of experience, and over 15 EHS shows under their belt, CPA are well established in the world of construction shows with over 1,900 members; just like a well-oiled machine!
The CPA team were on-hand to offer advice about the latest issues surrounding the construction plant sector, and promote their upcoming shows and award ceremonies.
We’ll see you at the CPA Stars of the Future!
GGR Group
As a leading UK-based supplier of specialist lifting equipment, GGR Group were exhibiting their latest range of products designed to facilitate movement of both heavy and delicate materials (including glass, concrete and steel) in the safest and most efficient way. Their extensive portfolio is filled to the brim with amazing products, not short of mini spider cranes, vacuum lifters, and other specialist lifting equipment that cater to various sectors, including construction, glazing… and more!
They showcased the following:
- NEW Tracked Steel Beam Lifter
- ECO-295 Mini Spider Crane
- 3.0 Tracked Carrier
- GF30 Pick & Carry Crane
Just like their portfolio, their stand was just as jampacked, and was amazing to see!
IDE Systems
The long-established IDE Systems has some 30 years of experience in manufacturing temporary power distribution products in the UK. Whether purchasing or hiring, they offer power products for all industries, and can monitor energy consumption on site with Erica, their energy management system.
IDE Systems were exhibiting their quality distribution boards, as well as offering advice to help others learn more about energy management and temporary EV chargers.
Magni Telescopic Handlers
EHS, a key event for this company, was a huge success for Magni. Not only were they able to sell kit directly off their stand, it was also the perfect opportunity for Magni UK to display their newly launched 6m 3 ton compact telehandler! This machine is the most powerful 6m compact telehandler on the market currently, which shows Magni’s expertise in this industry. They were able to present a preview for the TH 3.6, and received great interest from others in the industry, professionals and operators, which is certainly impressive!

Mecalac
In addition to the show’s focus on innovation, Mecalac celebrated their sustainability credentials at EHS. Their main focus has always been to deliver reliable, highquality equipment, whilst also specialising in highly innovative plant machinery designed for use on urban construction sites. And after more than 69 years of experience in this industry, Mecalac showcased their vast knowledge at EHS, always keen to “revolutionise operations for construction professionals worldwide” Their dedication to the construction world is crystal clear; just by meeting with their passionate dealers and staff on their stand, it was obvious that Mecalac always aims to provide the best support for their customers. Their mission is to help them maximise the productivity on-site, providing an efficient support network amongst their incredible products and machinery.
Prolectric
Promoting their smart, clean technology mission, Prolectric had a big stand with a huge array of their amazing products! You were greeted with massive solar panels when walking onto their stand, and if you craned your neck upwards, their tall Lighting Towers were beaming down on you. As specialists of off-grid, renewable lighting and power as well as solar hybrid generators, just like Mecalac, they weren’t here to just show their innovation, but also their immense sustainability.
As a regular exhibitor at EHS, Prolectric knew what to expect and knew how to get the visitors going. At the show, they launched their new patented Lighting Tower Technology as well as previewing a prototype energy storage system (a new battery that we were told they would be unveiling later in the year at another show… stay tuned for that! I know we are). They also promoted special offers to visitors who wanted to sign up, by giving them an exclusive free trial to all of their products. And not only that, they supplied us with
some ethically produced chocolates too… there’s no better way to walk away from a stand with some sweet treats, especially ones that are kind to the world!
Their statistics underline their success, as Head of Marketing Alex Priddle says that the initial prototype of the ProChange battery energy storage system (otherwise known as BESS) has been “saving one of the UK’s largest contractors over £200 a day for the past few months.” That would save you a whopping £73,000 a year! Prolectric’s goal is to continue educating and influencing to create the change, and honestly? We love to see it! Promoting renewable alternatives to help the planet? Sign me up!
Rouse/SmartEquip
Walking over to Rouse/SmartEquip’s stand, we were pleasantly greeted with our own mag on their front table! I managed to snap some photos before chatting to our friends on the stand (and also laughing at the fact that no-one wanted to pose for a photo).
Rouse and SmartEquip provide complementary solutions for the lifecycle of equipment management, at all stages of usage. Rouse empower other businesses with trustworthy and accurate information and statistics through their powerful suite of reporting tools. SmartEquip offers a parts procurement solution that can be used to connect owners with the suppliers of their equipment on a single platform. This helps maintain their equipment and improve uptime. Together, they blend innovation and solution, and both brands fuse together perfectly well. At EHS, they were able to push this further by promoting their cuttingedge solutions to all visitors and exhibitors alike.
Thwaites
With their dumper range on display, the Thwaites stand was bursting with life and chatter. Their machinery offers a safe, compliant and competitive solution. A huge array of compliments and positive comments from owners and operators support their 80-year heritage and experience, showing that Thwaites really do know what they’re doing when it comes to dumpers.
The confidence and passion behind Thwaites’ products are immeasurable, claimed as the “most exciting products in the whole show; in the world”, and who am I to disagree? They came to excite, and they certainly delivered!
To sum up…
All round, it’s easy to say that EHS was a truly immersive and impressive show to attend, offering so much to the hire industry and more. It opened my eyes to the new machinery and equipment on the market, upcoming business ventures as well as cutting-edge and competitive technology. It was truly insightful. And with the dinner and the 2025 Passionate Hirer Awards ceremony perfectly sandwiched in-between the two days, there were endless opportunities for business conversations and making new connections with people in the industry.
We cannot wait to return in 2026 to see what more EHS can offer! The next Executive Hire Show will take place on 11th & 12th February 2026 at the home of hire—the CBS Arena, so save the date!
In the words of Publishing and Event Director, Chris Moore, “bring on 2026!”

A Legacy of Innovation, Adaptation, and Sustainable Growth
Ace Plant has established itself as a leader in the specialist plant hire industry, with a legacy spanning over five decades. From its humble beginnings as a small plant and tool rental company, it has evolved into a powerhouse in dust suppression, bunded fuel storage, and bespoke engineering solutions.
Despite facing industry upheavals and financial challenges, Ace Plant has continued to adapt and innovate, now positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable plant hire. This article explores the company’s history, its transformation under Buckingham Plant Hire, and its future as a leader in zero-emission equipment.
The Founding Years: From Small Hire to Big Innovation
Ace Plant was originally founded in 1973 as Adams Cundell Engineers Ltd by David Adams and Frank Cundell. The business initially focused on renting basic agricultural equipment, such as mowers and entry specification tractors. However, as the demand for larger machinery grew, the company expanded its offerings to include tractor hire, telehandlers, and a range of construction and agricultural equipment. This diversification marked the beginning of its evolution into a more specialised and engineering-driven plant hire business.
Over the years, Ace Plant built a reputation for its ability to provide highquality machinery for various industries, including:
• Quarrying and Construction –Supplying machinery suited to heavyduty environments.
• Waste Management and Recycling –Offering equipment for efficient waste processing.
• Airports and Events – Catering to unique industry-specific requirements.
Bespoke Engineering and Specialist Equipment
What truly set Ace Plant apart was its ability to engineer bespoke solutions. Unlike conventional plant hire firms, Ace Plant worked closely with its clients to design and manufacture specialist equipment that wasn’t readily available on the open market. This included:
• Bundie Bowsers – A highly popular bunded fuel storage brand designed to prevent environmental contamination.
• Quickspray and Dustfighter Units –Innovations in dust suppression that significantly improved air quality on construction and quarry sites.
• Customised Machinery – Bespoke adaptations of existing equipment to meet the specific needs of its diverse customer base.
With a strong foundation in engineering, Ace Plant quickly gained a reputation for problem-solving and providing reliable, tailored solutions to the industries it served.
Becoming Part of Buckingham Plant Hire
In 2016, Ace Plant was acquired by Buckingham Plant Hire (BPH). The acquisition aligned Ace Plant with a major construction solutions specialist, allowing it to expand its reach and capabilities. Under the new ownership, Ace Plant moved its operations from Old Stratford to Blackpit Farm, the headquarters of Buckingham Plant Hire. However, despite the acquisition, Ace Plant remained a separate entity, continuing to operate with its own brand and product lines.
What truly sets Ace Plant apart is its ability to engineer bespoke solutions
Ace Plant’s New Direction
Focusing on Sustainability and Innovation
Under the leadership of George Wheeler, Ace Plant is now shifting its strategy to focus on specialist and sustainable equipment. The company has retained its signature Bundie Bowsers and dust suppression systems while also investing in:
• Electric Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTVs) – Offering a cleaner alternative to diesel-powered transport on construction and event sites.
• Lithium Hybrid Lighting Towers – Reducing reliance on diesel generators at remote sites.
• Low emission Tractors – Aligning with the growing demand for sustainable agricultural solutions.
This transition reflects a growing trend in the industry towards greener and more efficient technologies. Wheeler emphasises the importance of educating customers on the benefits of electric-powered equipment, stating that adoption is simply a matter of changing operational habits.
A Vision for the Future Sustainability, Innovation, and Excellence at Ace Plant
By George Wheeler, Managing Director
“We pride ourselves on being more than just a plant hire company. We are a close-knit team with a family feel, built on honesty, reliability, and experience. Our staff are galvanised together, working towards a shared goal: delivering the best possible service and solutions to our customers.
“Our people are at the heart of Ace Plant, and we operate with a small, dedicated team that values trust, integrity, and collective success. Our people are experienced and invested, ensuring that every project we undertake is handled with the highest level of care and professionalism. We believe in building lasting relationships, both within our team and with our customers, to create an environment where everyone thrives.
“By fostering a strong team culture, we ensure that our employees are not just workers but integral parts of a dynamic and ambitious company. Their expertise and dedication are what set Ace Plant apart, allowing us to provide a service that is second to none.”
“Our vision is simple – we see excellence in every solution. We aim to be the best solutions provider in our field. Our approach is centred around delivering customer success through tailored, high-quality solutions. We want to be the company that our customers think of first when they need exceptional service, expertise, and reliability.
“Our goal is to go beyond just providing equipment. We take the time to listen, understand, and create customised solutions that help our customers achieve their objectives in the most efficient way possible. Whether it’s a simple hire or a complex project, our team is committed to delivering an unrivalled service that meets and exceeds expectations.”
Our Future Focus Quality, Teamwork, and Customers
“As we look to the future, our values remain firmly rooted in being a family-based, team-centric, quality-driven, and customer-focused company. We are not just about selling or hiring equipment; we are about building lasting partnerships and delivering meaningful solutions. To achieve this, we will continue to expand our operational offerings to existing and new customers. Our extensive customer base, both in the UK and abroad, relies on us to provide not only our core range of equipment but also new and innovative solutions that enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
“Ace Plant’s legacy will be one of added value. We are dedicated to bringing the customer experience to the next level. When you call Ace Plant, it’s not just about a quick hire (although we do that too!); it’s about finding the right solutions tailored to your needs. Our approach is about efficiency, practicality, and maximising value for our customers.”
With a forward focus, Ace Plant aims to:
• Increase operational efficiency – By offering products that maximise equipment utilisation and create a safer work environment.
• Drive sustainability through innovation – Working with industry leaders to develop safety solutions that are practical, effective, and easy to implement.
• Deliver practical and tangible improvements – Avoiding unnecessary gimmicks in favour of real-world applications that make a difference on-site.
Safety & Sustainability Through Innovation
Safety and sustainability are at the core of our future strategy. We are working closely with importers, specialist product designers, and leading brands to create an offering that enhances safety in a practical way.
Many of the current safety features in plant hire equipment – such as buzzers, flashers, and screens – can lead to sensory overload. At Ace Plant, we want to develop systems that maximise safety while minimising distractions. The key is to make safety simple and intuitive. If it’s too complicated or annoying, people are less likely to follow procedures. We are currently working behind the scenes on some exciting developments in this area, so watch this space.
George Wheeler outlines the Ace Plant mantra for the next five years.
Practical Solutions, Not Gimmicks
• A clear commitment to developing products and methods that increase efficiency and safety in a way that is tangible and practical. No frills, no gimmicks – just solutions that work. By not offering single-use solutions, but being versatile and practical, ensuring that equipment serves multiple purposes and provides long-term value to our customers.
Sustainability Through Education
• Sustainability is not just about switching to electric – it’s about understanding how to use equipment more efficiently. Ace Plant helps industries and businesses to achieve their Net Zero goals through smart and sustainable choices.
• Sustainability is not achieved by a one-size-fits-all approach. While 100% electric equipment may not replace diesel alternatives in every situation, it can be integrated in a way that enhances overall efficiency, by embracing change and working with technology to find the best solutions for each application.
The Ace Plant Approach
• Offering a range of sustainable equipment options, from more efficient diesel variants to hybrid and fully electric models.
• Educating customers on how to utilise equipment effectively to reduce environmental impact.
• Working with industry partners to drive innovation and sustainability in plant hire.
The Future of Ace Plant
The plant hire industry is evolving, and Ace Plant is leading the way. As we continue to grow, we will focus on:
• Expanding our range of sustainable and innovative plant hire solutions.
• Developing industry-leading safety and efficiency systems.
• Strengthening our relationships with customers and partners.
• Maintaining our commitment to exceptional service and customer satisfaction.
“Our vision is clear: to be the goto solutions provider in the industry. Ace Plant’s journey is one of growth, adaptability, and success, and we are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. Together with our customers, partners, and team, we are building a smarter, safer, and more sustainable future for plant hire.”
Expansion Beyond Construction
While Ace Plant remains committed to serving the construction sector, it has also expanded into the leisure and events industry. The company has long-standing relationships with key clients, including Silverstone Circuit, and supplies equipment for:
• Silverstone Woodlands Campsite –Providing lighting, power, and logistics support for events such as the British Grand Prix.
• Blackpit Brewery – Offering equipment to support venue operations.
• Festival Operations – Delivering top quality events equipment to support the UK’s premium festivals behind the scenes operation.
• The National Trust – Supplying accessible & sustainable transport options for their larger estate sites such as Stowe Landscape Gardens.
These ventures demonstrate Ace Plant’s ability to diversify while maintaining its core values of quality, reliability, and innovation.
George Wheeler sums up. “Looking to the Future, as Ace Plant continues to grow, the company remains dedicated to its founding principles of engineering excellence and customer service.
The transition towards electric and hybrid plant machinery positions Ace Plant at the forefront of the industry’s sustainability movement.”
“Ace Plant has a renewed focus on niche markets and sustainable growth. With a reputation built on adaptability, problem-solving, and technical expertise, the company is well-equipped to thrive in the evolving plant hire landscape.”
Conclusion
From humble beginnings as a small rental business to becoming a leader in specialist plant hire, Ace Plant has built a reputation for resilience, innovation, and excellence. “More than just hiring equipment, we provide tailored solutions that enhance efficiency, improve safety, and support sustainability. Our commitment to bespoke engineering, customer service, and environmentally responsible practices ensures that we remain at the forefront of the evolving plant hire industry. As the sector moves towards greener solutions, Ace Plant will continue to drive meaningful progress, working alongside our customers and partners to create a lasting legacy of excellence.”

Onsite On Hire – New Hire Showcase: Sold-Out for London May 2025
After launching at Birmingham’s NEC, co-located with UK Construction Week in early October last year, the new London hire equipment show, Onsite On Hire (ExCeL, London 7-9 May), for hire companies and equipment suppliers, is sold out according to the show’s organiser.
Where Hire Meets Construction!
“Latest equipment for hire/rental will be the focus” says organiser Anthony Kane “with eco, low carbon and net zero products especially featured in a sponsored area from Speedy Hire,” that will show construction visitors a comprehensive selection of the latest tools, compact plant and equipment at the first hire equipment showcase in London for many years.
Getting To ExCeL, London
“Now transport links to the ExCel venue have been bolstered by the Elizabeth Line (formerly Crossrail) we can offer visitors direct and fast access to central London within 20 minutes or so, even Heathrow Airport on a direct service” continues Anthony.
What’s on Show?
Visitors to Onsite On Hire will be able to see exhibitors who supply solar welfare cabins, to help meet net zero targets on construction sites, solar/hybrid generators and solar lighting sets plus hire/rental of energy management software that reduces energy consumption by 50%, with matching CO2 savings and cost reductions of 50% too. Other equipment will include the latest battery technology on a range of tools and equipment. There will also be the latest electric powered mini diggers and dumpers.
Here is a selection of exhibitors from the 30+ hire equipment suppliers at the show.
Exhibitors taking space include Garic, Liftroller UK, Husqvarna UK, Makita Power Tools, Pop Up Products, Multiquip UK, Air Spectrum, ZND, AFC Energy and many more.
Caption: The Altrad Belle E+ 82v Lithium-Ion range is their innovative emission-free series of products that uses the latest battery technology to provide high performance and quality without engine emissions or the requirement of an on-site power source. The range includes the Minimix 150E+ Cement Mixer and the Disc Cutter (pictured).
Another exhibitor, Conquip Engineering, provides straightforward equipment hire/rental for many major operators in the plant sector, and direct to groundworkers, infrastructure and housebuilders from the manufacturer.
Their hire service offers everything from excavator and forklift attachments, lifting equipment, concrete solutions, site set-up and storage to bulk excavation, temporary loading platforms, trench shoring and other temporary works.
Another new exhibitor, Solar Hybrid Solutions, sees enormous potential for its specialist service supplying solar hybrid generators. The company, part of the MHM Group, was recently launched and Chairman Josh Llewellyn says that the typically higher initial cost of such equipment can deter some construction companies, and the new business offers an attractive hire/rental opportunity. Trime generator products are featured on their stand at the show.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY ROUND-UP
DECEMBER 2023 – ALL ABOUT ATTACHMENTS
In the first ever issue of Industry Corner, our Managing Editor Rebecca, visited three companies, all in the business of Attachments - no, not the emotional type - the clever bits of versatile machinery you stick on your movers. Though, their immense utility may leave you fond and quite… attached.
ALBUTT ATTACHMENTS
Albutt Attachments started from humble, agricultural beginnings and are now a world leader in their field.
We chatted with Tom Worthington, General Manager, who emphasised their focus on quality and environmental consideration.
“We’re continually investing in the plant and in the business for so many reasons. We put 115 kilowatt solar panels on the roof at the end of 2020 and that provides roughly a third of our electricity and keeps costs down. Like you say though, it’s also about having that accountability, staying sustainable and looking after the environment as well.
I guess all goes back to the agricultural side of things; we’ve always done it and will always continue to do so. You’ve got to look after the world we’re in at the end of the day and as rural people we like to look after what’s around us, people and places alike.”
Albutt is a wholly-owned family business specialising in manufacturing high specification attachments for the agricultural, waste, construction and forestry industries.
The company’s ethos is to build up to a quality rather than down to a price, resulting in the Albutt brand becoming the ‘heavy duty’ option in this specialised industry. This is reflected in the high percentage usage of high tensile steels ‘Hardox’ & ‘Domex’ within the Albutt product range.
To maintain service levels of its market leading product, Albutt operates a continual investment policy which over the last year has seen a second factory open and a brand new paint and surface preparation facility installed. The policy allows Albutt to keep pace with an ever-changing market place and continue to produce class leading products to a number of industries and applications.
In
Industry Corner we get a closer look at the business and people that make this industry tick. And this time, we have a round-up of all the great companies and individuals we’ve had the privilege of talking with from past entries, along with checking out some of their sustainability and social practices - it is the theme of Circular Economy this issue, after all. So make yourself a cuppa, plate up a few biscuits, and settle in for a whirlwind tour of the greats!
INVICITA FORKS AND ATTACHMENTS
The Yorkshire born and bred company who are number one in the UK in their sphere. We spoke with Sales Manager, Aarron Hume, who spoke on the personal touch Invicta brings to the table.
“We are a smaller, more intimate company, which I think really ties into why people buy from us because we’re more personable. It’s all about the experience. One of the big things we always say in our pitch is “the Invicta Difference”, but what is that? It’s the personability. It’s the problem solving. We don’t just chase sales here. We chase relationships. We’re not going to say a product will work for you if it doesn’t because we don’t chase a bottom-line figure. We chase longevity. Personally, I’m really about growing and building on things for the future.
It’s not about quick sales for quick money; this is how a lot of our competitors operate in the markets these days.”
Their commitment to quality British manufacturing ensures that all of our products are built to last. And if your attachments need maintenance or repair, they can help with that too. Their expert repair and refurbishment services help extend the lifespan of your products and minimise the need for new manufacturing – reducing your environmental impact.
Prioritising repair, reuse and recycling helps extend the life of your forklift forks and attachments and minimises your environmental impact.
They also minimise the use of plastic in their packaging and reuse and repair forks and attachments. Old equipment is recycled when they receive it. Every attachment is built to comply with industry standards, including LOLER guidance.
BPH ATTACHMENTS
And finally, we were lucky enough to be the very first magazine invited to BPH Attachments brand new HQ, for an exclusive behind the scenes tour by Sales Director, Matthew Bastable.
They spoke about how their extensive range of refurbished products, and team of mobile engineers fits into a circular economy.
“There are plenty of occasions when the customer’s not looking to a new attachment so we’ll supply something from our from our rental fleet that’s fully refurbished, with warranty and honestly looks pretty close to a new one. It’s another greener approach too, because a lot of the time it’s always just ‘sell something new’ but actually, if you’re making good attachments, you can refurbish them. You can take care of them and keep their life going.”
All used excavator attachments for sale are serviced, repaired and resprayed, and the price includes new hoses and a standard pin type bracket to suit each excavator. (Brackets to suit other quick hitches are available).
“There will be times that even the best piece of equipment will need some kind of service work. Or it will break down or need a part. So it’s important our customers know that they can get that support from us. And that’s why we’ve got a team of mobile engineers that cover the entire country. From the Shetland Isles all the way down to Cornwall.”
FEBRUARY 2024 – LORD MUCK
For the next issue, Rebecca had a good old chinwag with a bit of a social media celeb! Lord Muck! But we call him Kurt.
A touchstone in the online community, he likes rescuing old machines and getting them running; saving them from becoming scrap. You’ll also find lots of useful content on machinery services and maintenance.
Kurt knows what he’s talking about and shared his thoughts on social media, including the pitfalls of isolation it can breed.
“Once upon a time, breaks were about getting together in the tearoom and chatting to one another. Genuine human interaction. It’s so important on a worksite and we’ve lost it. Think about it, new recruits coming on the scene aren’t communicating with those with experience like they were before. Sure, the old gruff geezer in the corner might look a bit daunting, but I bet he has so much to teach you that training alone can’t.
“There used to be a support network amongst teammates that I’m not sure remains. Before, in those little conversations, you’d be able to see who was struggling, help them out, you know?
Now? Most people are just keeping it to themselves before they go back to their cab and sit on their own for however many hours more of that day. It’s a loss of community and communication.”
Kurt also shared the value he hopes his content provides.
“When I’m talking about a machine, it’s because I’m passionate about it. I don’t read off a sales brochure and I’m not there to sell machines. It’s conversational. I’m there to just let you know what I’m thinking, how I feel about it, how I see it, what I think is good and bad about it.
“One thing I’ll never do is lie to my audience. I don’t just take anything that’s given to me.”
Supporting your Crane training needs
APRIL 2024 – WITHAM GROUP LTD
For last April’s issue, we spoke with the innovative Witham Group, providing an essential component in machinery: oil. Sustainability and green practices were very much at the forefront of the conversation.
“We started with the quick wins. We looked at our recycling process, paper and plastic, the basics. The we started using grey water for washing the vehicles and the factory itself. Out of all the stuff, that was pretty easy. Then we looked at our raw material suppliers’ environmental credentials and the way that they were manufacturing the product that we would buy. We like to ask questions, find more sustainable solutions.
“We looked at the oil barrels themselves. They’re metal barrels that are dropped off and then when they’re finished, they’re disposed of. We thought, what if we did away with that completely. Now, depending on geographical area of course, we supply free oil tanks that can be filled in bulk. Then they are directly refilled.”
And then there was their blending operations and one of the most impressive and clever changes we’d come across:
“The process is called Blendtek Solutions. Instead of using a mechanical paddle and heat, we developed a method and
prototype to use ultrasound to mix the lubricant. You place ten different liquids in a tube and... the ultrasound basically pulls the products in and mixes them at a molecular level. It’s a big eureka moment, because all of a sudden, we didn’t need to heat the product, we didn’t need to use a mechanical paddle to mix it and we could use it plugged into a plug or a wall. So, before, it took about 1962kw of power to blend 10000 litres of oil. Now, it takes 8kw!
“And no heat needed at all. Our gas usage has reduced by 93%...This also means our product packs can be filled immediately without the need for cooling and we can also blend much smaller bespoke batches. We are now blending completely carbon neutral.”
They also have extensive Environmental and Sustainable Objectives 2025, listed on their website. these cover everything from carbon footprint measuring, supply chain management, waste management, recycling and water usage.
JUNE 2024 & FEBRUARY 2025 – VOLVO CE
In June 2024, Rebecca took a trip to Sweden and learned all about Volvo’s history and range of machinery. Then, in February the next year, writer Ren followed up visiting one of Volvo’s factories and seeing the unveiling of their new hauler line.
On her trip, Rebecca commented, “It was very clear that their biggest concern was about the planet’s resources. This shone through with pride in the teams who showcased their electric range, and just what they can offer, especially as they form part of Volvo’s biggest launch yet.”
Ren heard from Kristina Tejler, Head of Quality, Environment and Safety, Volvo CE, who spoke on the uses of low carbon steel - a big part of the manufacture of a hauler, I’m sure you can imagine - and were proud to celebrate it’s “climate efficient site” status.
Volvo CE’s website has plenty of material on their sustainability plans and efforts. Here’s a few snippets.
“Cutting carbon is critical in meeting the ambitions of the Paris Climate Agreement. We are going further by committing to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 – a decade earlier – as validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.”
“We must fulfil the demands for construction and infrastructure in a way that respects our planet’s limited resources. We are replacing fossil fuels with clean and renewable energy and improving our ‘reuse, reduce, remanufacture and recycle’ approach.”
And, Volvo CE recently announced another major advancement in its sustainability journey, with three additional facilities achieving landfill-free status. Ongoing efforts mean there is also less than 1% landfill waste across all other sites.
AUGUST 2024 – SUNBELT RENTALS
Writer, Lorna, joined Rebecca for her first out-in-the-field trip to a Sunbelt Rentals Open Day.
Along with a plethora of exciting stands showcasing machinery, what’s at the forefront of their mind?
From investing in new green technology and innovating greener solutions that reduce harmful emissions to cutting our waste and consumption to protect the earth’s resources.
INVESTING. INNOVATING. INSPIRING.
“As a global company we have the buying power to not only invest in the latest low-carbon technologies, but to also collaborate with world-leading manufacturers to shape demand for the next generation of equipment.”
FURTHER,
FASTER
When it comes to a greener, more sustainable future, it’s not just about changing the big things, it’s about everything. “Like moving to digital, paperless systems,” they explained. [We can attest to this as during their open day, when we asked for a leaflet, they didn’t have any! And not because they forgot them.] “Introducing water and energy saving equipment into our depots. And investing in electric, hybrid and Euro 6 compliant vehicles.
Sunbelt says “We are committed to working responsibly - it’s in our DNA. Our Sustainability Plan 2025 aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We are committed to creating social impact and to achieving lasting legacies through our work. We collaborate with you and with our suppliers to help innovate and shape the next generation of environmentally friendly equipment.
“We work with local communities around the UK, we help charities and help develop sustainable careers for disadvantaged groups. Our dedicated social impact team is working in line with Government recommended best practice, to capture the social value that we create.”
OCTOBER 2024 – KH PLANT TRAINING
Rebecca joined Lana for an open day made to inspire. She asked Kieron Honeyman, the Managing Director, what inspired him to help veterans and women get a taste of the industry?
“Well, obviously I’m an ex-squaddie, so the open days really started with veterans. I was having a drink one night, and for some reason my mind drifted to my time in the army. I gained so much from my time there, and if I hadn’t been there, l’d have been in really big trouble. And it made me want to give back to veterans, especially as I’m in a position to be able to do something that would actually benefit. So, that’s when we did Veterans Day, where vets could come along free of charge and learn to drive machines and perhaps kick-start a new career for them and help them to get qualifications.
“After we’d done one or two of them, I was talking to one of the girls who worked in the office. She mentioned there was a company that had done some sort of women in construction
day that she’d attended, which she really enjoyed but it was all simulators. Now, l’ve worked with quite a few women in the industry, and l’ve got a lot of female friends, and I couldn’t help but think, these days are a great idea, but simply showing a vague outline won’t help. They deserve the opportunity to try it out in a completely structured and safe environment with qualified instructors. Hands-on experience, you know? It turns it into a bit of a fun day, but obviously, at the same time it raises awareness and takes a little bit of that stigma away. Anyone can find these machines intimidating, but I feel it’s even harder for women because they feel cast out from the construction culture.”
Along with Women in Construction Day and Veterans Day at KH Plant Training, In 2023, they also undertook the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds to help homeless veterans and the MCVC charity in Rotherham. After 10 hours of battling tough weather and pushing our limits, they successfully raised over £6,000, which was evenly distributed between the two charities.
DECEMBER 2024 – KLEENOIL
And last but not least, we get to shout about Yaz, the KLEENOIL company dog... and KLEENOIL themselves of course!
Established in 1976, KLEENOIL was originally adopted from a Japanese innovation and marketed as a by-pass filter, based on the need for an oil change every 6000 miles. This meant that for most transport companies, there would always be monthly downtime and expense; something that in any industry can amount to a big problem over time.
However, installation of KLEENOIL meant that there was no need for a change, and companies would be able to maintain the oil as clean as new. The only change necessary was a simple monthly 5 minute cartridge as opposed to the timely and messy full oil and filter schedule. Quite the difference right off the bat!
By maintaining ‘as new’ levels of lubrication cleanliness; oil can be kept for far greater lengths of time; and alongside condition monitoring; users can minimise oil replacement to negligible top ups.
The Kleenoil Bypass Filter System is a By-Pass Oil Filtration System that passes only a small portion of the total oil flow slowly through the highest available density of natural cellulose depth filtration cartridge.
At a slow speed, it is possible to remove particles down to 1 micron (3 absolute) and remove 99.5% of all water.
Keeping oil clean in use will:
• Eliminate water and particle contamination
• Pro-long oil life, extend standard filter life
• Extend engine oil life up to 5 times and hydraulic oil up to 10 times
• Reduce engine/machine wear and component wear
• Dramatically reduce downtime AND minimise waste disposal
CLOSING REMARKS
And there you have it folks; a look at the incredible people and companies keeping this industry alight with innovation and quality. Doing what they can for sustainability and society, and a helping develop a circular economy. You might have a few tidbits of information you can share with your colleagues, to go along with that empty mug and plate of crumbs. Thanks for reading and we’ll be back with another fascinating company to talk to next time.
WHY MODERN CONSTRUCTION
CAN’T AFFORD TO OVERLOOK THE POWER OF A SINGLE-SOURCE PUMP SUPPLIER
Pumps are fundamental to many construction projects, playing a vital role in everything from draining sumps, pits, and foundations after heavy rainfall, to boosting water pressure and managing dewatering during piling. Yet, sourcing the right equipment at the right time, along with reliable technical support can be a challenge.
With different suppliers specialising in various pump types, procurement teams often end up juggling multiple vendors, adding complexity to the process.
A more streamlined approach is to work with a single, experienced supplier that can cover all construction related pump needs. Whisper Pumps explain why dealing with a single source of supply for your pumps can improve the profitability of your contracts in an ever competitive market, ensure efficiency and provide the necessary support to keep projects running smoothly.
The importance of considering a pump’s total life cycle cost
When it comes to sourcing pumps, or indeed any equipment, you’re no doubt faced with budgetary pressures that can lead to short-term purchasing decisions. This typically happens when buyers focus solely on the upfront costs rather than considering the total life cycle expenses, which can impact overall efficiency and long-term savings.
Focusing solely on the upfront cost of a pump often results in hours of scrolling the internet for the cheapest solution. However, the hidden costs of managing multiple suppliers, such as time, logistics, and administration are often overlooked here. Wouldn’t it be advantageous to have a trusted supplier who can provide the best price and solution, all in one place?
The hidden costs of managing multiple pump suppliers
Managing multiple suppliers isn’t just time-consuming, it’s expensive! The unseen costs go beyond the price of the pump, adding to that all important total life cycle cost and having a significant impact on your project’s efficiency and bottom line.
Here’s how working with multiple pump suppliers can add unnecessary costs:
• Increased Administrative Work – Sourcing quotes, setting up new suppliers, and processing multiple invoices take time away from essential project tasks.
• Delayed Procurement – Coordinating with different suppliers can lead to miscommunications, longer lead times, and potential project delays.
• Higher Logistics Costs – Multiple suppliers mean multiple deliveries, increasing shipping costs and complicating site logistics.
• Inconsistent Quality & Support – Different suppliers offer varying levels of service, making it harder to get reliable technical support and consistent product quality.
• Less bargaining power - Purchase value being spread over multiple suppliers means you have less negotiating power when it comes to getting the deal and service level you need.
The Value of a Trusted Supplier
One thing you cannot put a price on is building a trusting relationship with your supplier. When it comes to sourcing pumps, reliability and expertise matter just as much as the equipment itself.
Reaching the point where you can confidently rely on a supplier for fair pricing, quick service, and the right solutions makes all the difference in project management.
Reaching this level of trust eliminates the hassle of managing multiple vendors, streamlining operations and ensuring that the right solutions are always within reach. In construction, where time and reliability are everything, having a single, dependable supplier isn’t just convenient, it’s a game changer.
Hiring VS Purchasing Water Pumps
A common discussion within the construction industry is whether to purchase or hire pumps. Despite the long-term benefits of ownership, many construction sites continue to rely on hired pumps, largely due to the budget constraints which have been mentioned. However, with many hiring companies not being able to offer a full range of pumps such as those for fixed water supply installations, the initial upfront saving adds another supplier into the mix and the costs that come with that.
Dewatering pumps are among the most frequently hired pump types, essential for managing excess groundwater, rain accumulation, and general site drainage. They play a vital role in keeping construction sites operational, especially in a country where rainfall is inevitable for most of the year! Given their frequent use, purchasing a dewatering pump instead of hiring one can offer significant long-term benefits.
1.
Long-Term Cost Savings
With the frequent rainfall we experience in the UK, there’s regularly need for a dewatering pump to clear foundations after a rainy night. Considering hire costs can reach up to £150 per week, investing in your own dewatering sump pump can easily save money with the payback period being from after as little as three hire uses.
2. Immediate Availability
Owning a submersible pump ensures it is always on hand, avoiding delays caused by hire availability and delivery times. Store it securely alongside other essential kit items like your generator, wacker plate and disc cutter, so you’re always prepared for the job!
3. Convenience
No more hassle of managing pump hire agreements, arranging pickups, or dealing with returns. Plus, when you hire a pump, you’re still responsible for it – which often means footing the bill if it gets damaged.
4. Ownership control and consistency
Owning your own pump gives you complete control over its use. You’ll know its maintenance history, performance capabilities, and can count on its reliability. With proper care your pump can serve you reliably for many years!
While hiring a submersible pump may seem practical for short-term needs, purchasing one offers far greater benefits due to the quick pay back time. From significant cost savings and improved convenience to greater control and reliability, owning a dewatering pump ensures you’re always prepared for the job. By investing and including it as part of your essential kit rather than hiring, you can save time, reduce stress and have a dependable solution that serves you well for years to come.
Recommended Dewatering Sump Pump Solution
A pre-packaged submersible dewatering pump kit offers a quick and convenient drainage solution, designed for immediate use on-site. The kit includes a 230V or 110V submersible pump, 50 metres of layflat hose, and all necessary pipe fittings, making it an ideal choice for civil engineers on the go who need a portable and efficient dewatering system.
Compact and easy to transport, the kit fits seamlessly into a work van, ensuring it is readily available to tackle your next drainage job. Purchasing the complete package provides significant cost savings compared to buying each item individually – it’s like getting the hose and fittings for free!
Beat the box shifters and choose a technical pump supplier
There are thousands of pump suppliers who can simply move boxes, selling pumps one after another with no personal interaction. These are often the online suppliers who lure businesses in with lower upfront costs, making price the primary deciding factor. But what happens when something goes wrong? That’s when the real cost begins to surface.
When a pump fails, delays in getting the right support can lead to downtime, lost productivity, and mounting expenses. Suddenly, that small initial saving doesn’t seem so worthwhile. Without expert guidance, you might end up with the wrong pump for your application, poor aftersales support, and no one to turn to when an issue arises.
This is why choosing a single-source technical pump supplier is the smarter investment. A supplier that goes beyond selling products by offering tailored solutions, expert recommendations, and ongoing support to ensure that your systems run reliably. In the long run, quality service and technical expertise always prove more valuable than a short-term discount.
Choosing the Right Pump for Piling – Why expertise matters?
When specifying a pump for piling, there are many critical factors to consider, depth of the hole, water level, pumping distance, flow rate, and the type of material being pumped. Choosing the wrong pump can lead to inefficiencies, costly downtime, or even project failure.
In recent years, borehole pumps which are typically used in agricultural settings for groundwater extraction, have gained popularity for piling applications on construction sites. Their narrow design allows them to fit into piling holes, making them an effective solution for efficiently removing water and ensuring uninterrupted foundation work. However, using a borehole pump in a piling application requires careful selection to ensure it meets the demands of the site, including the ability to handle variable water levels and potential debris.
This is where a technical pump supplier proves invaluable. With in-depth expertise, they can assess site requirements, recommend the most suitable pump for the job, and ensure it delivers the required performance. A specialist supplier doesn’t just sell a pump; they provide a complete solution, factoring in power requirements, potential obstacles, and long-term reliability.
The
Essential
Role of Pressure Boosting Pumps in Construction
Pressure boosting pumps and equipment play a vital role in the construction industry, ensuring a reliable and consistent water supply in various applications. Whether it’s distributing potable water across a temporary site that isn’t yet connected to a permanent supply or providing long-term water pressure solutions for a new housing development, these systems are essential for maintaining on-site functionality.
On temporary construction sites, water pressure issues can arise due to low supply from nearby mains or the need to pump water over long distances and varying elevations. Pressure boosting systems ensure that workers have access to adequate water supply for drinking, sanitation, and essential site operations such as dust suppression, equipment washing, and concrete mixing.
In permanent installations, particularly in residential developments, pressure boosting pumps are vital for ensuring water reaches all outlets without pressure drops. These systems help maintain consistent water delivery across multiple units, preventing fluctuations that could impact daily usage.
By working with a technical pump supplier, construction teams can select the right pressure boosting solution based on flow demand, site conditions, and future scalability. Whether for temporary or permanent use, having a properly designed system which includes everything you need from the pump to the pipework and all relevant fittings ensures uninterrupted operations, improved efficiency, and long-term reliability. Finding a supplier who can source it all, will be the most efficient way of working.
Water Level Alarms: Why You Should Consider Them
Having a single-source supplier for all your pump requirements is invaluable, but what about securing all the other essential components needed for a reliable system? A water level alarm is a critical addition to any construction site, designed to alert site managers when water levels in tanks or other
containers rise too high or fall too low. This simple yet effective device helps prevent overflows, water shortages, and costly equipment failures, ensuring seamless operations.
For construction sites relying on water for pressure boosting, or concrete mixing, an unexpected water shortage can bring work to a standstill. Likewise, unchecked rising water levels can lead to site flooding, structural damage, and delays. Installing a water level alarm provides early detection and peace of mind, allowing proactive measures before problems escalate.
By sourcing a water level alarm, construction professionals can ensure they have a reliable solution tailored to their site’s needs. With expert guidance and a full range of compatible equipment available from one trusted pump supplier, integrating this essential safeguard into site operations has never been easier.
A Pump Supplier That Does It All – And more!
Finding a pump supplier than can provide every pump you’ll need on a construction site is a huge advantage. But what if that same supplier could also supply all the essential components – hose, pipe fittings, control equipment, water treatment products, and everything else required for a complete system? It might sound too good to be true, but with Whisper Pumps Ltd, it’s a reality!

Sustainability in the World of Plant: How is the Construction World Giving Back to the Planet?
By Lorna Cowlin
In a world where we are all actively conscious about the planet, the ecosystem and playing our part, what happens when it comes to the construction industry and plant machinery?
Protecting our planet really does start with us! It’s becoming more apparent as time goes on that we all need to do our bit when it comes to building a more sustainable future.
We hear that world a lot, “sustainable”… but do we actually know what it entails?
What does being sustainable even mean?
Sustainability originates from the Latin verb “sustinere,” which means “to hold, support, or endure”, and the word “sustain” comes from the late 13th century verb “sustenen”, meaning “provide the necessities of life to”. This suggests that, regardless of context, sustaining something means to ‘keep and protect’. So, when in relation to a sustainable planet, that is exactly what we must do!
We all play our part in helping the environment; for example, I no longer use makeup wipes in my routine anymore, unless I know they’re biodegradable. Instead, I use micellar water now to remove my make-up. But such as most things, if not everyone is doing their bit, no major difference will be made, or at least not quickly.
However, this is a plant magazine, and we’re not here to talk about my makeup routine! So, that then begs the question…
Why is sustainability important for plant machinery?
I’m so glad you asked! When you think about big, heavy machinery and large plant equipment, it’s easy to think of scary, smoky fumes, engine gas and pollution. But nowadays, that isn’t the case, and lots of work is being done so the construction industry isn’t labelled as messy and damaging to our planet. That’s when we get onto the topic of carbon neutrality.
Going carbon-neutral is the new gold mine. As each day passes, more and more companies pledge to become carbon neutral, net-zero or even climate positive. This is great to see! Terms like this have been around for quite some time now, but it’s not until the last few years we’ve heard them being said a lot more. And whilst they all promote a similar thing, they don’t all have the same meaning.
Carbon Neutral: This suggests the balance between emitting CO2 into the atmosphere and absorbing it again. Elevated levels of CO2 are bad for the environment, so making sure it’s absorbed again eliminates any chance of pollution, therefore preventing catastrophic consequences driven by global warming, such as rising sea levels and extreme weather events.
Net Zero Emissions: In addition to carbon neutrality, net zero emissions simply means that net-zero carbon emissions are being entered into the atmosphere.
Climate Positive: Also known as “carbon negative”, this means an activity takes an extra step further from net zero emissions, which in turn creates a huge environmental benefit that sees extra CO2 being removed from the atmosphere.
To go deeper into this, one must understand the term ‘Carbon Footprint’. This is the total amount of greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane, that are generated by our activities and actions. The average carbon footprint per person in the United Kingdom is roughly 10 to 13 tonnes. Having a high carbon footprint prevents carbon neutrality, so when one is aiming to be climate positive, their carbon footprint needs to be low.
Are you keeping up? Jolly good!
Simple solutions like going hybrid or electric, using energy efficient appliances and/or using 100% renewable energy providers are positive steps in the right direction to reducing your carbon footprint. So, when it comes to construction and plant machinery, reducing your carbon footprint is vital.
By prioritising sourcing local, low-carbon materials, optimising energy use, and minimising waste through recycling, your carbon footprint whilst on-site will be dramatically reduced. As I said before, if we all do our bit, the bigger difference will be made!
Mass production and consumption can result in a high carbon footprint, but when taking the necessary steps to reduce that, becoming climate positive and achieving net zero emissions is much easier! Using the circular economy cycle means the life span of products is prolonged and extended!
Wait… I’ve used a new term…
What is a ‘circular economy?’
We’ve all heard the phrase “reduce, reuse, recycle”, but what if I told you there was a fourth word in that sequence? Circular economy promotes a “reduce, reuse, recycle and recover” approach, and this can have a net-positive impact on the environment.
As mentioned previously, low-carbon materials and minimising waste through recycling is such a key factor when it comes to the circular economy. And just like it says in the name, the circular economy model is just that… a circle! The model is pretty straight forward:
Raw Materials →
Sustainable Design →
Production →
Distribution →
Consumption →
Reuse & Repair →
Collection →
Waste Management/Recycling
This cycle comes to a very simple conclusion: less raw material means less waste which results in fewer emissions.
So, I suppose I lied earlier in saying that the common “reduce, reuse, recycle” doesn’t actually just have four words, but it could in turn have five: Refuse, Reform, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. But despite having more steps, that doesn’t mean it’s more complicated or harder work!
The circular economy is a way in which we can make production and consumption a less hazardous cycle, and more of a beneficial one. It involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling materials that have all been previously used for something else, so long as it is feasible. This approach leads to product longevity, once again showing that the life cycle of products is extended.
This reduces waste, which means the management of waste keeps it within the economy, so the product can be used again and again, thereby creating further value. Pretty neat, right? And all of this whilst being more carbon neutral and climate positive? Sign me up!
So, why do we need to switch to a circular economy?
The short answer is simple: protecting the environment! “Reduce, reuse, recycle” isn’t just a phrase that Bob the Builder used all the time; reusing and recycling the products we use on site can slow down the use of natural resources, which helps preserve precious landscapes and protects habitat from disruption. This, as a result, helps limit biodiversity loss. So, in reality, Bob the Builder is actually a really good role model, not just for construction, but for protecting the planet too!
How to achieve sustainability on site?
So many brands and companies are practising carbon neutrality, which beautifully brings this article full circle and back to the first of many big words I mentioned… sustainability! The world of construction is hopping on the sustainable bandwagon and doing its bit to reduce its carbon footprint and protect the planet. So, let’s see who’s doing what, shall we?
Prolectric
Their main focus is off-grid, renewable energy, so already it’s clear that Prolectric adores being environmentally friendly! In fact, they even go as far to say that sustainability is “in their DNA”. With their battery storage units, they’re able to completely remove the use of diesel within their work, which is a huge factor when it comes to reducing the amount of carbon one uses. Their dedication to this makes them the only UK business to have a first-to-market advantage and commitment to sustainability, with a true authentic green focus. Their website even features statistics, showcasing that they have saved 35,027,818kg of CO2e (Carbon Dioxide Equivalent), 13,184,681litres of diesel savings and £15,012,000 in cost savings! Those are some pretty impressive numbers; numbers that show it really pays (and saves!) to be sustainable!
Komatsu
Another brand that is striving to lower their carbon footprint is Komatsu. They’ve introduced a sustainability policy, used to express their stance on this matter. They pledge that being sustainable and responding to climate change is an “essential component” of their mission as a brand. President and CEO, and Representative Director, Hiroyuki Ogawa, says “creating value through manufacturing and technology innovation to empower a sustainable future where people, business, and our planet thrive together.” Not only are they keen on spreading the word, but they are also “committed to meeting the challenge of climate change and other social issues, and we will fulfil our social and environmental responsibilities as a global company through our business activities.”
Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE)
With a simple tagline, Volvo CE’s mission is “leaving no-one behind”. Their holistic and sustainable approach is one that focuses on people’s health, safety and wellbeing, taking care in managing the planet’s resources, and supporting the circular economy model. In response to the Paris Climate Agreement, Volvo CE are going the extra mile by committing to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, which is a decade earlier than the original Climate Agreement. Not only that, but they are also replacing their usage of fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy, as well as – in a true Bob the Builder fashion! – improving their “reduce, reuse, remanufacture and recycle” approach. All this combined promotes how to get the best results from contributing circular economy. Volvo CE is certainly proof that it works.
So, is the construction world giving back to the planet?
The short answer to this is: yes! And they’re doing a fine job of it too. But to put more detail into my answer, I think it’s clear to see that, from my makeup wipes conversion to big construction corporations’ sustainability improvements with net zero changes, that collectively, we are making a difference. Like anything, there is always room for improvement and more things to be done. The world around us is a vastly adaptable place, and if we are not adaptable with it, we won’t be able to keep protecting it. And if there’s anything I’ve learned from researching this as well as hearing about it in the news and all around me, it’s that protecting the planet is really in right now. So, we all need muck in and do our bit!
It feels wrong if I don’t close this article without mentioning him, so here I go again…
When thinking about a sustainable future for the world of construction and plant, just think what would Bob the Builder do? Because then, you’ll have your answer.

FOR ALL PLANT & OFF ROAD MACHINERY
Driving the Family Business
What
does it take to establish one of the UK’s leading independent parts suppliers across a global network?
For over three decades, Plant Parts Ltd has been a driving force in the construction machinery parts industry, delivering reliable solutions and building a global reputation for quality, expertise, and exceptional customer service.
From humble beginnings in 1991 to becoming one of the UK’s largest independent suppliers of construction machinery parts, Plant Parts has not only grown but thrived—by staying true to its core values of quality, innovation, customer satisfaction, and family-driven dedication.
The Humble Beginnings: A Vision Turned Reality
The journey began with Richard Finch, who in 1991 was running a small plant hire business and who saw a gap in the market for a dependable supplier of machinery parts. With a keen understanding of the intricate flow of parts between suppliers, manufacturers, and end users, Richard set out to bridge the gap between delivery time and cost by creating a business that prioritised quality, speed, and trust.
“I began my working life as a plant fitter,” Richard says. “Over the years, I built my experience and understanding of the industry and I came to realize that machine operators need more than just a parts supplier—they need a reliable partner that can be trusted to consistently deliver high quality parts on time at a fair price.”
That vision gave birth to Plant Parts Ltd, which started as a modest operation focusing on Komatsu parts and which has since evolved into a complex and highly specialised enterprise. Today, the company doesn’t just offer Komatsu parts—it provides parts for machines across many industries, supporting over 150 brands of tracked and wheeled equipment.
With thousands of parts ready to ship from its fully stocked warehouses and an impressive 50 thousand+ combinations of major component solutions accessible through the innovative FDC Parts Finder, Plant Parts ensures that customers get the exact part they need, when they need it. They also ensure that they are genuinely supportive of the end users who ultimately are the ones relying on their machine to do a day’s work.
“We understand that keeping a fleet running often means balancing cost and efficiency. However, we believe that true value lies in reliability and performance, not just the lowest price. That’s why we don’t offer cheap, unproven parts. We focus on providing, high-quality components from time tested, reliable suppliers many of which are the OEM for the machine manufacturer. Repairs are carried out in our own workshop so that we have control over every job that we do, whether it is parts supply or full workshop rebuild. Our goal is to support not just the business, but the people behind the machines to help improve efficiency & productivity in all areas.”
Duncan Vowles – Sales Manager
A Family-Run Business Built on Trust and Expertise
What sets Plant Parts apart is not just its extensive range of products or cuttingedge technology—it’s the people behind the business. Since its inception, Plant Parts Ltd has remained a family-run operation, where every member of the team, from engineers to accounts personnel, contributes to the company’s ongoing success.
“Our point of difference lies in our people,” Richard emphasises. “We’re a close-knit team of 30, each bringing expert knowledge and unwavering dedication to customer service. Our customers aren’t just numbers—they’re partners, and we go the extra mile to make sure they’re taken care of.”
This family ethos has translated into long-standing relationships with clients, who know they can count on Plant Parts Ltd not just for quality parts but also for honest advice, technical expertise, and a genuine commitment to their success.
“It’s our determination to continually improve our customers’ experience that maintains the relationships we’ve built over the years. Steering clear of unproven dedicated AM brands and staying loyal to the major OEM’s has enabled us to achieve our accreditations and maintain easy access the best parts available on the market.
“Our clients range from one person owner drivers all the way through to major fleet operators and expectations vary enormously. It’s our understanding of customer expectation from the outset which defines how we go about any job. Wheather the backstop is time or budget, our team work relentlessly to provide the most suitable solution.”
Dave Finch –Business Development Director
Unparalleled Expertise and Innovation in Repairs
In 2008, Plant Parts expanded its services by establishing a state-of-the-art workshop that has become a cornerstone of its operations. This facility allows the company to offer expert assessments, repairs, and testing of drives, providing customers with cost-effective alternatives to buying new parts.
“Our workshop is something we’re particularly proud of,” Richard says. “We’re able to assess, rebuild, and rigorously test final drives, swing drives, and hydraulic motors, offering a more sustainable and economical solution for our clients. As the industry works towards the goal of net zero emissions in the UK, this approach is becoming increasingly popular.”
By investing in cutting-edge technology and ensuring that their engineers are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge, Plant Parts not only guarantees the quality of its repairs, but also contributes to a more sustainable future for the industry.
“At Plant Parts, engineering and mechanics aren’t just part of the job— they’re a true passion shared by our entire team. You can’t count how many times you’ll find us gathered around a new hydrostatic component, discussing the intricacies of an interesting repair, or exploring the capabilities of a piece of test equipment. That curiosity and dedication drive us to constantly improve, ensuring that every part we supply and every repair we complete, meet the highest standards. It’s this genuine enthusiasm for what we do that translates into the expertise and attention to detail our customers have come to rely on.”
Alex (from their growing Marketing team) adds; “This is true, we dedicate a portion of our calendar to visiting or exhibiting at a number of trade shows and events (such as Hillhead, Bauma, Plantworx, CPA Conferences and CONEXPO USA). I have to make room for a decent allowance of time to simply allow the team to soak up the new tech and look at the big toys!”
A Global Network: The Final Drive Centre
While Plant Parts’ roots are in the UK, its reach extends far beyond national borders. In 1995, the company established The Final Drive Centre (FDC), that has now evolved into a network of trusted providers that delivers unrivalled quality and support to customers worldwide.
“Our vision was to become the worldwide brand of choice for aftermarket final drives,” Richard explains. “By partnering with specially selected companies across the globe, we’ve built a robust network that allows customers to access our reliable range of products and benefit from the FDC Guarantee—no matter where they are.”
Today, over 50 FDC Dealers are strategically distributed across the globe, ensuring that customers can access local support, whether it’s for parts or repair. Each FDC Dealer undergoes rigorous training and is equipped with the technical knowledge and resources needed to meet the unique demands of their respective regions.
“By eliminating language barriers and providing exceptional service, our FDC Dealers meet and exceed the expectations of their customers,” Richard says. “And our job is to support them in any way we can.”
Guaranteeing Quality: ISO Accreditation and Customer Confidence
For Plant Parts, quality isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a promise backed by ISO 9001 certification. This internationally recognised standard reflects the company’s unwavering commitment to quality management and customer satisfaction.
“ISO 9001 represents more than just a certificate for us,” Richard explains. “It’s a symbol of our dedication to maintaining the highest standards across our operations. Our larger business partners, in particular, value this accreditation because it reinforces trust in our ability to deliver reliable products and services.”
Achieving ISO 9001 accreditation wasn’t a one-time milestone for Plant Parts—it was the beginning of a company-wide journey towards continuous improvement. By integrating quality management principles into every aspect of the business, Plant Parts ensures that its customers receive nothing but the best.
Trusted by Industry Giants: Partnerships That Speak Volumes
Over the years, Plant Parts has built an impressive reputation among its peers, thanks in part to its strong relationships with established manufacturers such as ZF, Rexroth and Bonfiglioli. In fact, Plant Parts is the only approved Bonfiglioli workshop outside Italy, a testament to the company’s technical expertise and commitment to maintaining the highest standards.
“We’ve been able to retain and support some incredibly significant projects,” Richard says. “Playing fair with the big boys, as we like to say! These partnerships not only extend our credibility but also ensure that we provide our customers with the best possible solutions.”
Part of this success is Plant Parts’ commitment to only providing the RIGHT solution, and that means really understating each part and machine at a granular level. “Our technical team is powered by two brilliant minds - Phil and Andy who are the driving force behind the success of our complex inventory management systems, ensuring we have the right part in stock.
“Phil and Andy are the core of our technical team, continuously driving innovation, maintaining high standards, and providing the right solutions for our customers. Their commitment to excellence ensures that every unit and part we offer is of the highest quality and that our stock is always ready to meet the needs of our customers.”
Innovation Meets Convenience: The Power of the FDC Parts Finder
In an industry where time is money, the ability to quickly locate and source the right part is crucial. That’s where the FDC Parts Finder comes in—a powerful and comprehensive online database that simplifies the process of identifying and purchasing the correct parts.
“Our FDC Parts Finder is a gamechanger,” Richard notes. “With over 20,000 machines listed and growing, it’s an indispensable resource for machine owners, dealers, and repairers. Customers can easily find final drives, swing drives, and hydraulic pumps, and their internal parts, as well as slew rings and recoil springs, confident that they’re getting the right part, first time.”
This commitment to efficiency and reliability is one of the many reasons why Plant Parts enjoys a high rate of customer retention and referrals.
Looking to the Future: A Legacy of Excellence
As Plant Parts celebrates its 34th anniversary, the company is not resting on its laurels. With an eye firmly on the future, Richard and his team are committed to continuing their legacy of innovation, sustainability, and customer focus.
“Our journey has been incredible, but we’re just getting started,” Richard concludes. “We’re constantly looking for new ways to improve, expand, and support our customers. Whether it’s by embracing new technologies, enhancing our services, or strengthening our global network, we’re dedicated to remaining at the forefront of the industry for many years to come.”
In a world where trust, reliability, and expertise are paramount, Plant Parts has proven time and again that it is more than just a supplier—it’s a partner in success. MAINTAINING MACHINE OIL CLEANLINESS… IS A BALANCING ACT
Does your machine warranty demand an unachievable ISO Level? It is a challenge to achieve desired contamination control targets due to so many factors;
• Tank / sump size,
• Dirt ingression rates,
• Oil flow rates,
• Operational changes,
• Temperatures,
• Filtration changes,
• Maintenance,
• Repairs.
This all-influences particle-capture efficiency so the initial solution is to
contamination ingress.
It is simply impossible to adequately remove contaminants at a sufficient rate with full-flow filtration to maintain this balance. This is not a criticism; it’s just that most standard filtration has to work in ‘full flow’ and cannot allow itself to inhibit the pressures; so the media is just not fine enough to take particle capture down to smaller sizes, but enough to remove the visible pieces.
Yet most machinery has pumps, or valves that have finer tolerances and will not cope with the next, finer level of contamination not captured in full flow.
OEM often add ‘staged’ filtration to try and address this – so whilst the first level might remove down to 40 micron – the next may take it to 25 micron; but this is often still not enough – and with full flows
you will often still see ‘bigger’ pieces being pushed through.
Where full filtration proves ineffective at maintaining balance, offline filtration— permanent or as routine cleanses—such as KLEENOIL is the solution.
The goal of balanced filtration is to ensure that the oil remains at or below the target cleanliness and dryness level for optimum system reliability.
Routine monitoring will allow for assessments to ensure the balance in cleanliness by tweaking filtration changes or pinpointing looming pump and cylinder wear that can avoid breakdowns.
It’s no secret that maintaining good filtration alongside routine condition monitoring will ensure the best productivity and least downtime.
With full flows you will often still see ‘bigger’ pieces being pushed through, such as here, where the standard filtration has allowed these pieces through to before the cellulose depth filter.

DANFOSS POWER SOLUTIONS INTRODUCES FULL-FLOW HIGH-PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE FOR H1B MOTOR
Danfoss Power Solutions announces the launch of a full-flow high-pressure relief valve (FHPRV) for its H1B bent-axis motor. The FHPRV joins the counterbalance valve (CBV) in a portfolio of valves designed to enable the use of Danfoss high-power axial piston motors in open-circuit systems. The FHPRV enables machine designers to leverage the benefits of the H1B motor’s compact design and outstanding efficiency while also providing overpressure protection in high-power applications.
The FHPRV is a bolt-on valve that provides high-flow pressure relief at the motor, which is critical for motor protection in demanding applications. In the event of an extended overpressure situation, the valve enables the passage of up to 600 liters per minute of flow, depending on size, preventing damage to the motor and pump. The flow rate is among the highest available for this type of valve.
The compact solution offers fullflow relief functionality without a significant increase in motor size or circuit complexity. Other solutions, such as remote-mount manifolds, require more space and can increase cost and complexity.
Commonly used in closed-circuit propel applications, axial piston motors such as Danfoss H1 motors are also ideal for high-power open-circuit systems, including drilling functions, crushing and shredding functions, heavy-duty excavator attachments, and forestry applications.
“While typical open-circuit applications can make use of low-speed high-torque motors, higher pressure applications require higher power axial piston motors,” said Kenny Befus, High-Power Portfolio Manager, Hydrostatics division, Danfoss Power Solutions. “Danfoss H1 motors feature a delta pressure rating of up to 450 bar, 480 bar absolute, making them ideal for these scenarios. And now, with our full-flow high-pressure relief valve,
we can provide a better match when it comes to power and pressure.”
The FHPRV can be stacked with other valves, such as the CBV, providing additional functionality based on application needs. It can also be used in closed-circuit applications.
The FHPRV is available in four configurations to suit the range of H1B motor displacements. DN19 works with the 60-cc motor, DN25 works with the 80-cc and 110-cc motors, DN32A works with the 160-cc motor, and DN32B works with the 210-cc and 250-cc motors.
