NATIONAL BOOK WEEK

NATIONAL BOOK WEEK

1 MILLION COPIES OF SOPHIATOWN SOLD!

Macmillan Education South Africa is thrilled to announce that our book, Sophiatown, has reached an incredible milestone: We have sold one million copies!

Sophiatown was originally published by the Regional Literature department in 2014, in response to a call for submission of literature titles by the National Department of Basic Education in South Africa.

It was selected as the only contemporary play prescribed for Grade 11 English First Additional Language. It sold a record number of just over 572,000 copies in 2015, and now in 2025, we have crossed the million mark.

This is a first-ever milestone for Macmillan South Africa, and we are beyond proud!

We have some exciting celebrations lined up (think confetti, balloons... maybe a surprise or two), so watch this space.

About the book

Until its destruction by government decree in the mid-1950s, Sophiatown was the ‘Chicago of South Africa’, a vibrant community that produced not only gangsters and shebeen queens, but leading journalists, writers, musicians and politicians. This play brings to life the characters, lifestyle, creativity and thinking that gave urban African culture its rhythm and style.
