September

From the GM-Select, Mark Krtek

Summer vacations and activities are tapering off in Lakewood as kids and young adults are returning to school—if you are reading this the morning of September 1, please enjoy the last day your Lakewood pools are open for the season!

I extend my appreciation for the various clubs and committees that put in the time and energy to their groups and events this summer, it has shown me just how enthusiastically this community makes Lakewood ‘the place to live!’ Congratulations to the Lakewood Lasers and Cruisers, it was a great season for both teams—and their accomplishments can be seen on page 8 of this publication. Please also keep an eye on the calendars, as there are plenty of fun events heading into the cooler months, particularly Smokin’ in Lakewood and Halloween in October, The Artist Reception in November, and more.

As there is still plenty of pleasant weather left before the season changes, I encourage residents to make the most of it and continue to enjoy the lakes and common walking trails—but please be mindful that when you do, you are not trespassing onto private property. One of these is the Lakewood Oaks Country Club’s golf course, namely, the cart path. There is signage posted across the course that delineates where the cart path is, and clearly states that it is for golfer-traffic only. LOCC staff and Golf Club Members appreciate you respecting the course!

At this juncture in the year, SOLitude Lake Management has completed 3 treatments for us along with an inspection to monitor the lake health to see if any additional treatments are needed. Overall, the lakes is are looking great. For those curious about the work that SOLitude has done in conjunction with the treatments themselves, I suggest you view the Bathymetry Maps on the website at https://lpoa.com/departments/maintenance/ and scroll down to the ‘Maintenance Department Documents’.

Our staff is hard at work with a number of projects heading into this month—including the Northstar software transition, reviewing LIPs and planning for the November Budget Meeting and Presentation, and other maintenance around the neighborhood. We are grateful to our supportive, patient and kind residents throughout these busy times and look forward to enjoying the fruits of another year’s labor alongside you.

From the Boardroom

And in the blink of an eye…summer is starting to draw to a close. It was a great summer with lots of fun activities; the 4th of July Celebration, Cardboard Boat Races, Nine and Wine and Concert on the Rock, just to name a few.

With shorter days and cooler temperatures, comes budget season. The staff is currently working on the 2026 budget and will be submitting it for review. Following the submission, the Finance Committee and Facilities Development Committee will be reviewing staff and resident Requests, commonly referred to as the Lakewood Improvements Program (LIP). This budget represents capital projects, reserve allocations, as well as planned one-time expenses as determined by the LIP budgeting process. The committee’s work ensures the proposed budget is ready for Board approval in November, and we deeply appreciate the time, effort, and expertise our volunteers bring to this process.

In late July, the Board, Staff and Advisory Committees met to begin the goal setting process of the ENVISION Lakewood Strategic Plan.

The Finance Committee and Facilities Development Committee will then present their recommendations at the Annual Budget Meeting on Thursday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Clubhouse. Survey results from earlier this year showed that residents’ number one priority is gaining a better understanding of LPOA finances. This meeting is the perfect chance to do just that. This meeting offers a front-row seat to see how your LPOA budget is developed,

ask questions, and get clarity about where funds are allocated. We encourage you to attend this informative meeting.

In late July, the Board, Staff and Advisory Committees met to begin the goal setting process of the ENVISION Lakewood Strategic Plan. We’re in the process of gathering ideas from the committees, Board and Staff, so we can create clear, measurable action steps that will bring our Strategic Plan to life. Some of these integrations have already begun, such as the Did you Know features you have started to see in the Ripples. These kinds of efforts connect strategy and goal together and puts us on the right path to aligning ourselves with one vision. The Board of Directors will hold its own goal-setting session later this month. This is an integral part of keeping the ENVISION Lakewood Strategic Plan moving forward. We are grateful to all who participated and embraced this process. Your ideas, energy, and commitment will help shape the next 50 years of Lakewood’s success.

LAKEWOOD ARTISTS SERIES SEPTEMBER ART EXHIBIT

A place to present artists of all mediums

September and October promise cooler evenings, a red and yellow mosaic of fallen leaves around the shores of the lake, and an exciting new exhibit by three more Lakewood artists in the Argyle Gallery.

Julie Phillips

Recently, Lakewood artist Julie Phillips visited Arles, France, where the Dutch Expressionist, Vincent Van Gogh, spent two years creating much of his most valuable art before his tragic death in 1890. In this year’s exhibit, Julie’s inspiration from Van Gogh is her own version of “Red Poppies.” She continues to experiment and expand her technique with design in soft pastel and oil pastel using basic objects and gemstones. Julie is also a business owner in Lee’s Summit.

Grace Rottinghaus

Also exhibiting this fall is Lakewood resident, Grace Rottinghaus. Grace continues to paint very detailed still life, but her exhibit this fall will include some new outdoor paintings, one of which is an artistic view of Hole #16 on Lakewood Oaks golf course. Grace continues to use her art “to express her poetic view of life.” She is also a talented seamstress and does alterations for many Lakewood residents. When she’s not painting or sewing, Grace is an avid golfer.

Sheila Borne-Bundy

Sheila Borne-Bundy returns to the Argyle Gallery this year after winning three awards in two different Art Shows: Raytown Art Show, Best of Show with “Reflections in Shades of Gray;” Blue Springs Art Show, 3rd Place with “Controlled Bubbles,” and a 2nd Place People’s Choice Award. Sheila is delighted to win awards with her recent approach using different focal point objects with the capacity to reflect the material around them. Fond memories inspire Sheila to paint the retro toys of her childhood, when she and her siblings giggled and laughed away their time together. Her newest painting “Retro Game Night” is a reflection of favorite games they played like Cootie and Chinese Checkers. This year’s garden produced an abundance of flowers for Sheila to paint, and she continues to use a variety of glass and crystal vases to reflect the vivid colors of the blossoms. Her focus on reflection is also evident in Sheila’s work with marbles and mirrors. For years now, Sheila has been painting a unique image to use for her own personal Christmas cards, delighting the friends who receive them.

Welcome Home, Neighbors!

Can you remember your feelings years ago walking into a new school? Or starting your first real job? We’ve all been the ‘new kid on the block’ at some point in our lives. And while that is often exciting and energizing, it can also be daunting.

Do you remember your move to Lakewood? I certainly do.

Dave and I decided to retire and move to the Kansas City area ten years ago when our son and daughterin-law gave us twin grandsons. We found Lee’s Summit, and then stumbled onto Lakewood as we searched for a new house. We were simultaneously thrilled…and overwhelmed to be here. We had left the Wichita area and our home of 35 years. More than that, we left our community identity and connections. We had to find new doctors, insurance agents, restaurants, plumbers, landscapers. A new church. And while we loved being within 15 minutes of our son and his family, we knew no one else. I literally would bump my shopping cart gently into people at Price Chopper…because it gave me an excuse to apologize and have a little chat there in the aisle. Pathetic, I know. And on top of getting to know the ins and outs of life in Lee’s Summit, we also needed to get our heads around Lakewood. What’s The Argyle? How does Dave get involved in men’s golf? Can our kids use the pools? What are the Homeowners Association rules and guidelines? Whom do I call with questions or concerns?

Lucky for us, we met a few warm, friendly people…who introduced us to their warm, friendly neighbors… and we quickly began to feel at home. Lakewood Greeters’ mission is to be an accessible, friendly resource that will help make the transition into LW smoother and more comfortable for all new residents.

LW Greeters will receive the names and addresses of new residents shortly after they register with LPOA office staff. They will be asked at registration if a LW Greeter may contact them either by phone or on-line, and if so, we will schedule a time to drop off a small welcome gift bag and an informational Lakewood resource booklet. Throughout the member’s first few months, Greeters will send out eblasts inviting new members to upcoming Lakewood activities, and encouraging them to utilize our wide range of amenities. Greeters will be available at all major LW activities & events to answer questions, and introduce new residents to neighbors and staff.

We want to personally welcome new members to this beautiful neighborhood we all share and call home. But let’s do more than just say hello. Let’s help them fully use and enjoy their new community. Welcome Home, Neighbors!

Tracy Claggett, Mary Abrams, and I with staff and board support, have organized this renewal of a LW welcoming program. Now we’re looking for friendly volunteers of all ages and backgrounds--who love Lakewood and enjoy meeting new people--to join us.

Please consider joining Lakewood Greeters!
