At eight years of age, Susana Corrigan and her family left Mexico City under dire circumstances. Alongside her siblings and parents, Susana landed in Los Angeles, where the family set out to build a new life.
Even though she was only a child, Susana had a sense, an awareness, about what was happening around her. Her response to these events would inform the trajectory of her life, personally and professionally.
At the time, Susana didn’t realize the impact this time would have on her adult life, let alone her career choice. As she stepped into the working world, she remembered lessons learned through her family’s immigration and all of the uncertainty that came with it.

“I realized that my future was up to me; that I wanted to be the author of my life. I wanted to be able to provide for my family, to be financially successful, and to do good work for the benefit of others. I wanted to make an impact, to be of value.”
In her early 20’s, Susana began helping her family and friends from Mexico City find property in San Diego, researching the best agents, financing, etc. With boots on the ground in The States, she was equipped to help others navigate the system.
“In 1981, when we had to sell our residence, we had some bad experiences with agents. I ended up taking care of a large part of the transaction myself.” Susana became licensed and a REALTOR. Her plan was to sell real estate part time around raising her children. Then, she closed her first sale, a property in La Jolla that sold for $1.180 million—a lot of money in 1982! She closed the transaction in four days.
“I was immediately in love with the whole process and haven’t stopped loving it since. It
was almost instinctive, my connection with real estate. I love every aspect of the business.”
Early in her career, Susana had the good fortune of working under an influential broker and mentor, Athena Harman. When Athena called her to collect her first commission check, Susana headed to the office, feeling good. While there, she became engrossed with the business coming in and completely forgot about the check.

Over the past forty years, Susana’s focus, hard work and love of the business have not waned.

Outside of real estate, Susana is an avid reader and linguaphile. One way she leverages her skills is by writing listing descriptions for the MLS and all of the ad copy. She’ll often take several hours to write just a few sentences, keying in on every word, to create flavor and feeling. As a result, she’s able to capture, not just the description of the home, but its essence. She also sets aside dedicated time for problemsolving and idea generation.
“Part of my daily practice is to empty my mind and put thoughts together. I come up with three, four, five, ten ideas – whether they are about marketing, property matches, or resolving difficult problems. I give myself time in a very busy schedule to be creative. Then, I put plans into action. The process is fruitful; it yields results.”
