3-on-3 Razz Fest basketball tournament

celebrates 25 years of community spirit

This July marks the 25th anniversary of the Curt Maberry Memorial 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a cornerstone event of the annual Raspberry Festival in Lynden. The tournament, managed by longtime organizers Jerry Blankers and Kassi Waldemar, has come a long way since its inception in 1999.

LYNDEN — This July marks the 25th anniversary of the Curt Maberry Memorial 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a cornerstone event of the annual Raspberry Festival in Lynden. What started as a modest addition to a sidewalk sale in 1999 has grown in popularity far more than initially

envisioned, as it draws players and spectators from across Whatcom County and beyond. The tournament, managed by longtime organizers Jerry Blankers and Kassi Waldemar, has come a long way since its inception. Blankers, a veteran basketball coach, recalled the tournament’s origin during a co ee shop conversation with Dave Black, then-owner of Dutch Mothers bakery. Black suggested a 3-on-3 basketball tournament would revitalize the Raspberry Festival, which had struggled to attract crowds. Intrigued, Blankers researched and saw potential in an idea that eventually transformed the festival.

“We started with 37 teams the ﬁrst year,” Blankers said. “We lost about $5,000, but the next year we had 62 teams, and it kept growing from there.” At its origins, it was called the Raspberry Jam 3-on-3 basketball tournament. By 2024, the tournament had reached its

capacity, with 250 teams across all age divisions.

“It’s incredible to see how much it’s expanded,” Waldemar said. “When I started in 2007, we were just below 100 teams, and now we’re maxed out. We’d need more courts or days to accommodate more.”

The tournament’s growth has not come without challenges. Despite increased demand for online registration and scheduling apps, Blankers and Waldemar have maintained a deliberately old-school approach to ensure the event’s economic and social impact on downtown Lynden remains strong.

“We want people to come downtown, whether it’s to drop o their registration or check the bracket boards during the tournament,” Waldemar said. “It creates foot tra c for local businesses and preserves the community atmosphere.”

The organizers also manually cra t the tournament brackets to prevent teams from the same schools, such as Lynden Christian or Nooksack Valley, from competing against each other early on. This hands-on approach is time-intensive — scheduling alone can take up to seven hours — but Waldemar and Blankers see it as essential to the event’s success.

The growing need for referees has also presented logistical hurdles, especially with the tournament’s emphasis on maintaining high-quality o ciating. Local high school athletes now sta many of the games, a practice that fosters mentorship among players and referees.

Over the years, the Razz Fest 3-on-3 has become an integral part of summer in Lynden. The tournament now encompasses divisions for all ages, starting with the Rookie Razz for kindergarten through second grade and extending to adult recreational and competitive brackets. Many families schedule their summer vacations around the event, while players begin forming teams and designing jerseys months in advance.

“It’s amazing to see how much people look forward to it,” Waldemar said. “Kids are always excited to ﬁnd out the

colors of the year’s shirts and balls when they pick up their gear.”

Beyond the courts, the tournament has made a lasting impact through philanthropy. Proceeds support the Lynden Chamber of Commerce to ensure its continued operation. Additionally, le tover equipment (such as basketballs and jerseys) are donated to schools and mission trips to Guatemala where Blankers has hosted youth basketball clinics.

“It’s so rewarding to see kids in Guatemala dribbling basketballs with our tournament logo,” Blankers said. “It’s just one of the ways this event has given back.”

The tournament has seen its share of unforgettable moments, from chaotic early years to dramatic weather challenges. Waldemar recalled one particularly rainy tournament when organizers used propane torches to dry the streets before taping the courts.

“It was stressful, but we pulled it o ,” she said.

In 2008, the tournament was renamed the Curt Maberry Memorial 3-on-3 in honor of the late longtime Lynden basketball supporter. The Maberry family continues to play an active role, supplying water barrels and other resources.

Blankers and Waldemar also take pride in the tournament’s generational legacy.

“We’re seeing third-generation players now,” Blankers said. “It’s a tradition for so many families.”

As the tournament enters its next chapter, the future is shaped by both tradition and adaptation. Blankers, who has been battling health issues, emphasized the importance of maintaining the event’s community-driven spirit.

“It’s satisfying to know we’ve created something that means so much to Lynden,” he said.

For Waldemar, the commitment to the

tournament is deeply personal.

“This event is such a staple in our community,” she said. “We’ll keep it going as long as we’re able to.”

As the tournament enters its next chapter, its future remains tied to the dedication of the Lynden community and the organizers who keep it running. Despite battling health challenges, Blankers remains committed to guiding the event, even if his role transitions in the coming years.

“The tournament means so much to this community,” Waldemar said. “Even if we ever step back, we’ll ensure it continues. It’s too important to let go.”

Blankers echoed her sentiment, emphasizing the value of the relationships and memories forged over the years.

“It’s satisfying to know we’ve created something that means so much to Lynden,” he said.

Agriculture is key to a farm fresh experience

Of all the goods and services Whatcom County has to o er, few match up to its agriculture. According to Whatcom Family Farmers, in 2022, the market value for Whatcom County’s dairy farm industry was marked at over $193 million with over 70 dairy farms that maintain over 550 cows.

Washington State leads the country in frozen raspberry production with Whatcom County providing 85% of the state’s export.

Outside of those numbers, Whatcom also has over 7,000 acres of land devoted to growing blueberries, with Whatcom County alone responsible for over 40% of Washington’s total blueberry production. Ultimately, none of this could be possible if

Whatcom County didn’t have some of the best farms in Washington State, with local farmers working sometimes all year to create some of the highest quality produce in the country. Here is a look into a few Whatcom County farms and their operations.

Appel Farms

Appel Farms is a family owned and operated dairy farm near Ferndale. First started by Dutch immigrant Jack Patel and now run by his children John and Rich Appel, Appel Farms o ers a rich assortment of gourmet cheese options, such as farmstead Swiss, gouda and feta. Berries has been one of Whatcom County’s premiere destinations for quality, home-grown berries since 1996.

The berry farm is owned by Whatcom residents Barbara and Randy Kraght. According to their website, Barbie’s Berries sells a variety of berries, such as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries.

Although the farm closes for the winter, frozen berries can still be bought year round.

Bellewood Farms

Operating on 62 acres of farmland in south Lynden, Bellewood Farms is a family owned farm committed to growing high quality fruit for the Whatcom community and beyond. According to their website, Bellwood’s fruit orchards possess 31 acres of high-density semidwarf trees featuring 22 varieties of apples.

Their second orchard, located close to Ferndale, has 15 acres of Honeycrisp apples and pears. The website also claims that the farm has up to 25,000 trees on the property.

During harvest season, the farm allows visitors to wander their orchard and pick apples for themselves, as well as pumpkins from their pumpkin patch. Visit bellewoodfarms.com for more information.

Edaleen Dairy

With three locations in Lynden, Edaleen Dairy has made a name for itself as one of Whatcom County’s most reliable dairy farms and stores. According to their website, Edaleen o ers organic, minimally processed dairy products such as a diverse range of milk and over 40 di erent ﬂavors of homemade ice cream. Their website also said that their cows are on a strictly maintained diet.

diets: quality, balanced, nutritionist-approved feed is available to them 24/7,” the website claimed. “Not only are their bellies full and happy but so is their entire body. While still closely monitored by hard-working farmers, these days the cows are getting in line to use the voluntary milking systems (robots) whenever they feel like it. Our milk travels only two miles from the farm to the plant where it’s processed and packaged within 24 hours.”

Grace Harbor Farms

Originally started by current owners Tim and Grace Lukens in 1999, Grace Harbor Farms got its start by selling soap made out of goat milk at farmers markets throughout Bellingham. Eventually, they began making goat milk lotion and

based skin care products. Some of those products include their Old Goat soap bars, extra strength MSM creams and lavender goat milk with manuka honey lotion with which the farm’s website claims provides powerful skin, muscle and joint support.

Lynden City Park one of many north Whatcom recreation areas

Lynden City Park features a variety of playground structures and amenities near the heart of Lynden’s downtown core, amidst a picturesque forest.

Also known as the Million Smiles, the community volunteer-build playground includes a climbing wall, swings, jungle gym, castle maze and a 35 t-tall treehouse with a slide.

Other amenities include Fishtrap Creek, four tennis courts, a pickleball court, a basketball court, group shelters, picnic tables, and a trailhead for Jim Kaemingk Sr. City Trail.

are 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. October to March, from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. April to September.

Lynden City Park is one of north Whatcom County’s many recreation areas. Here are a few others:

Bender Fields

Properly known as Bender Family Recreational Park, this 56-acre campus centers its eponymous soccer, lacrosse ﬁeld, so tball and baseball ﬁelds, along with a multi-faceted sports park which includes two climbing rocks, four full-size basketball courts, four pickleball courts, one beach volleyball court, one giant chessboard and one dirt pump bike track.

The other varied playground facilities include a picnic shelter, an indoor kitchen facility, picnic tables, a bocce ball court, a playground, a concessions stand and restrooms. The Jim Kaemingk Sr. City Trail passes through the park.

Berthusen Park

Based around a homestead originally constructed in 1883 by the Berthusen family, this 236-acre swath features a variety of late-19th-century-style buildings alongside contemporary amenities. As their mission statement says, they want “to promote, enhance, and protect the historic, environmental, and educational opportunities for the community in a rustic natural setting of the park.”

Berthusen Park’s amenities include picnic areas, group shelters, playgrounds, old growth forest for hiking and educational purposes, horseback riding and Bertrand Creek. It also plays host to Antique Tractor Club displays, historic buildings and equipment, the Lynden RC Model Airplane Flying Club, the Lynden Shotgun Club and a Boy Scout Troop 28 Cabin.

Berthusen Park is at 8837 Berthusen Road. Hours are 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. October to March, from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. from April to September.

Birch Bay State Park

Located between Bellingham and Blaine, Birch Bay State Park features loads of natural Pacific Northwest character. You’ll find plenty of room for hiking, biking, camping, fishing and all manner of boating and swimming, as well as picturesque views for miles.

Amenities include picnic tables and shelters, showers, trash service, wi-ﬁ, a boat ramp, grills, basketball courts, playgrounds, an amphitheater, and trails for both biking and hiking.

Birch Bay State Park is at 5105 Helweg Road, Blaine. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to dusk during the summer, from 8 a.m. to dusk during the winter. A Washington State Discover Pass, or a $10 day pass, is required for parking.

Mt. Baker

The Mount Baker National Recreation Area is undoubtedly one of the highlights of Whatcom County, if not northwestern Washington as a whole. Spanning

some 8,400 acres around the base of the mountain, the site is a popular destination for outdoor recreation enthusiasts across the country.

Winter-time activities include skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling, while popular spring and summertime ventures include hiking, horseback riding, camping and mountain climbing. There are four designated campsites (Cathedral, High, Railroad, Mazama Park Horse), four horse-and-hiker trails (Park Butte, Bell Pass, Elbow Lake, Ridley Creek) and two hiker-only trails (Scott Paul, Railroad Grade)

The Mount Baker National Recreation Area is located 53 miles east of Bellingham at the end of State Route 542.

Peace Arch

Peace Arch Park is not only a pleasant piece of architecture, but a fascinating historical monument and political object. The Park sits in the dead center between the United States and Canadian borders, accessible from either side. When one stands in the middle, they are e ectively standing in both countries at the same time.

Central to the park is the eponymous Peace Arch, which was commissioned in 1914 and ﬁnished in 1921, commemorating one hundred years of peace between the two countries. It’s played host to several notable visitors over the years, including Paul Robeson and Canadian Premier Gordon Campbell. The Arch is on

The Inn at Lynden

The Inn at Lynden is ever-evolving from its roots as the historic Waples Mercantile building to the Lynden Department Store to what it is today.
