N O W O F F E R I N G :
Dear
It’s more important than ever to take care of your overall health. It’s a great time to stick to (or create new) healthy habits and consult with health care professionals when you have questions or concerns.
The Lynden Tribune & Ferndale Record reached out to local health care providers to obtain unique content for our 2026 Whatcom County Health Care Guide.
This guide should not be used as a substitute for advice from a medical professional, but it may help readers learn how to seek advice and from whom. This directory provides general information and is not intended to replace your own doctor’s advice. Enjoy your reading!
Thank you,
For more than 13 years, Capstone Physical Therapy has been helping people throughout Whatcom County recover from injury, manage pain, and return to the activities they love. Whether recovering from surgery, healing after an accident, managing a chronic condition, or striving to perform at a higher level, our mission has remained the same: changing lives through care, culture, and community. As healthcare continues to evolve, so do the tools available to support recovery. That’s why we’re excited to introduce Deep Tissue Laser Therapy, an innovative treatment option designed to help reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and accelerate healing.
Deep Tissue Laser Therapy is an FDA-cleared technology that uses focused light energy to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. Through a process known as photobiomodulation, laser therapy promotes cellular activity, improves circulation, and helps reduce inflammation, creating an environment that supports tissue repair and recovery. What makes this technology especially appealing is that it offers a non-invasive, drug-free option for patients dealing with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. Common applications include back pain, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, joint pain, muscle strains, and many other orthopedic injuries. Many patients today are seeking alternatives to medication or more invasive procedures. Laser therapy provides another evidence-based treatment tool that can complement traditional physical therapy interventions and support the body’s natural healing response.
One of the most exciting aspects of laser therapy is its ability to fit seamlessly into a rehabilitation program. Treatments are quick, painless, and require no downtime, making them convenient for busy patients. The goal is simple: help people recover more comfortably and efficiently so they can return to work, recreation, family activities, and everyday life with greater confidence. At Capstone, we view technology as a way to enhance patient care, not replace it. The best outcomes happen when advanced treatment options are paired with skilled clinicians who understand the unique needs, goals, and challenges of every individual.
While we’re excited about this new addition, laser therapy is just one part of the comprehensive care available at Capstone Physical Therapy, including: • Physical therapy • Occupational therapy • Certified hand therapy • Pelvic health therapy • Sports injury rehabilitation • Return to work programs • Auto accident recovery • Therapeutic massage • Dry Needling • Bike Fit Assessments
What sets Capstone apart is our commitment to individualized, one-on-one care. Every patient receives a treatment plan tailored to their specific goals, helping ensure they receive the attention, education, and support needed throughout their recovery journey.
Innovation is most meaningful when it improves the patient experience. The addition of Deep Tissue Laser Therapy reflects our ongoing commitment to bringing effective, evidence-informed treatment options to the communities we serve. As we continue to grow, our focus remains unchanged: helping people move better, feel better, and live better. By combining proven rehabilitation techniques with advanced technology, we’re proud to offer patients new opportunities for recovery and long-term wellness. At Capstone Physical Therapy, we’re not just treating injuries. We’re helping our neighbors return to the lives they want to live. To learn if laser therapy is right for you or to schedule a treatment, call us at 360-752-5551 or visit our website at www.capstonept.com.
Our Mission is to provide patient-centered nephrology care through evidence-based medicine, technology and collaboration. We strive for excellence in every aspect of care, ensuring prompt, timely treatment tailored to each individual’s needs. Through collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare teams, we aim to foster a supportive environment where patients are empowered to actively participate in their treatment journey and achieve optimal health outcomes.

Like many of her friends and neighbors, Lynden resident Anureet Saran used to drive 25 to 30 minutes south to Bellingham for most medical care for herself and her family. A licensed practical nurse, she also commuted to Bellingham daily for her job with a local gastroenterology clinic.
That travel time shrank to three minutes in the spring of 2024, with the opening of PeaceHealth’s Lynden Clinic.
“I was super excited when I found out there was going to be a clinic right down the road from us,” said Saran, who took a job with the Family Medicine team soon after it opened. “I switched my boys to pediatrics here, and I bring them to same-day care when we need that. It’s great to have everything in one location – imaging and lab are just down the hall.”

As part of Lynden’s growing Indian community, Saran noted that many of her friends appreciate having caregivers fluent in Punjabi on-site.
With the clinic recently marking its second anniversary, leaders and caregivers are reflecting on how quickly it has become an essential healthcare hub for north and east Whatcom County.
Since opening its doors in April 2024, the 22,500-square-foot, single-story clinic at 8844 Benson Road has dramatically expanded access to primary and specialty care services in Lynden and surrounding rural communities.
The clinic now employs a total of 30 caregivers, including five family/internal physicians and three same-day clinicians, with an additional 23 rotating specialists offering pediatrics, orthopedics, cardiology, behavioral health and obstetrics/ gynecology/midwifery. On-site lab services and imaging—including mammography—are also available through partnerships with Quest Diagnostics and Mt Baker Imaging.
Metrics reflect both strong demand and increasing capacity: In the past two years the clinic has recorded more than 25,000 Family Medicine visits, 7,000 Pediatric, 8,000 Priority Care (same-day) and 20,000 specialty care visits.

“It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how quickly the clinic has been embraced,” said Arielle Serianni, clinic manager since opening day. “We consistently hear positive feedback not only about the convenience of having so many services available locally, but also about the beauty and comfort of the space itself. The natural light, the efficient layout and the collaborative spaces support both patient care and staff wellbeing.”
Besides Saran, at least 15 other clinic caregivers call Lynden home, including David Pash, DO, an Internal Medicine physician. He spent most of his childhood in Lynden and was thrilled to have an opportunity to return and give back to his community. “It was always a goal of mine to come back,” he said.

Personally, Dr. Pash is especially grateful that his wife, who gave birth to their second child earlier this year, was able to get all her pre- and post-natal care at the clinic from a PeaceHealth OB/GYN.
“I tell everyone I know here that we provide good services,” he said. “I truly believe that. We have great doctors here. In a small rural town, having a healthcare option like this is huge. I see the difference it makes every day for my neighbors, friends and family.”
The Lynden Clinic is also PeaceHealth’s first facility to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, reflecting a commitment to sustainability. Features include solar panels that offset a significant portion of annual energy use, free electric vehicle charging, stormwater bioswale filtration and landscaping that emphasizes native and drought-resistant plants.
PeaceHealth’s Lynden Clinic continues to grow its team and array of services while remaining rooted in the community it was built to support.

Often referred to as “primary care”, family medicine is the branch of medicine that provides general healthcare to individuals and families through all ages and stages of life.
Family medicine clinicians are trained in a broad spectrum of specialty knowledge, so they can treat most health concerns that a patient might have, right in the clinic. This includes a new illness or injury, ongoing or chronic conditions, pregnancy and newborn care, and many common procedures. For added convenience, Family Care Network also offers their own onsite lab services, integrated behavioral health options, and local clinic locations for sports medicine and urgent care.
Primary care clinicians also value maintaining good health, which means there is a special emphasis on preventive measures to help you stay well, such as health screenings, immunizations and education. As your partner in health, a family medicine clinician will coordinate with other specialists whenever needed and remain an active partner in your care.
When you choose family medicine for your healthcare, you will benefit from building a trusted, ongoing relationship with your care team over time. Our goal is to treat the whole person, promote well-being, and empower patients to make informed healthcare decisions as they live their best, healthy life.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the artery walls. It’s measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).
High blood pressure means the pressure in your arteries is too high.
Blood pressure is written as two numbers, such as 112/78 mm Hg. The upper number, called systolic pressure, is the pressure when the heart beats. The lower number, called diastolic pressure, is the pressure when the heart rests between beats.
Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mm Hg. If you’re an adult and your systolic pressure is 120 to 129, and your diastolic pressure is less than 80, you have elevated blood pressure. High blood pressure is a systolic pressure of 130 or higher, or a diastolic pressure of 80 or higher, that stays high over time.
High blood pressure usually has no signs or symptoms. That’s why it is so dangerous. But it can be managed.
Nearly half of the American population over age 20 has high blood pressure (high BP), and many don’t even know it. Not treating high blood pressure is dangerous. It increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Make sure you get your blood pressure checked regularly and treat it the way your health care professional advises.
PRESSURE CATEGORY
STAGE 1 HYPERTENSION (High Blood Pressure)
STAGE 2 HYPERTENSION (High Blood Pressure)
SEVERE HYPERTENSION

HYPERTENSIVE EMERGENCY (If you have any of these symptoms*, call 911.)

*symptoms: chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness, weakness, change in vision or difficulty speaking
There are risk factors that increase your chances of developing high BP. Some you can control, and some you can’t.
Those that can be controlled are:
• Cigarette smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke
• Diabetes
• Being obese or overweight
• High cholesterol
• Unhealthy diet (high in sodium, low in potassium, and drinking too much alcohol)
• Physical inactivity
Factors that cannot be modified or are difficult to control are:
• Family history of high blood pressure
• Race/ethnicity
• Age
• Gender
• Chronic kidney disease
• Obstructive sleep apnea
Socioeconomic status and psychosocial stress are also risk factors for high BP. These can affect access to basic living needs, like healthy food, medications, and health care professionals, and may limit the ability to make healthy lifestyle changes.
(continued)
How can I tell I have it?
The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to get it checked regularly.
For proper diagnosis of high BP, your health care professional will use an average based on two or more readings taken on two or more visits.

Call 1-800-AHA-USA1 (1-800-242-8721) or visit heart.org to learn more about heart disease and stroke.

What can I do about High BP?
• Don’t smoke and avoid secondhand smoke.
• Reach and maintain a healthy weight.
• Eat a healthy diet that is low in saturated and trans fats and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products.
• Try to consume less than 1,500 mg/day of sodium (salt).
• Eat foods rich in potassium such as bananas, avocados, cantaloupe, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Aim for 3,500 – 5,000 mg of dietary potassium per day. If you have kidney disease or are taking certain medications, talk to your health care professional before increasing potassium.
• Avoid or limit alcohol to no more than one drink per day if you’re a woman or two drinks a day if you’re a man.
• Be more physically active. Get 150 minutes of moderateintensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week, or a combination of both, spread throughout the week. Add muscle-strengthening activity at least two days per week for more health benefits.
• Take medication the way your health care professional tells you.
• Know what your blood pressure should be and work to keep it at that level.
Do you have questions for your doctor or nurse?
Take a few minutes to write down questions for the next time you see your health care professional.
For example:
Will I always have to take medication?
What should my blood pressure be?

Are generic medications safe and effective?
Yes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) makes sure of it. The FDA puts each generic medicine through a rigorous quality control review process to ensure that generics are as safe and effective as the original brand name medicine. The manufacturing facilities must meet specific standards too. The FDA inspects more than 3,500 pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities each year to monitor how the medicines are made, processed, tested, packaged, and labeled.
When do medication substitutions happen?
In the state of Washington, therapeutic substitution of the AB-rated generic version of a brand name medication is mandatory, unless the prescribing physician specifies that they would like the brand name medication to be dispensed by writing on the prescription “No Substitution”. AB-rated generic medications are therapeutically equivalent to their branded versions. A prior authorization request may be required by the patient’s insurance company for all prescriptions where the prescriber has indicated that he or she would like the brand name version. Hoagland Pharmacy will let the patient’s physician know that the prescribed medication requires prior authorization.
Can I get my prescriptions filled at one pharmacy?
Yes, and it helps the pharmacist check for drug interactions and manage your health more safely.
Do I really need to finish all of my antibiotics?
Yes, even if you feel better, stopping early can lead to resistance.
Do I need a flu shot every year?
Yes, flu strains change annually, and immunity fades over time.
Are vaccines safe for older adults?
Absolutely. In fact, adults over 65 are at a higher risk and benefit greatly.
Does Medicare cover vaccines?
Yes, most vaccines including flu, pneumonia, and COVID-19, are covered under Medicare Part B or D.
Can pharmacists give vaccines?
Yes, all of our pharmacists are trained and certified to vaccinate safely for those age 6 months and older. Many of our Pharmacy Technicians are trained and certified as well.
What’s a Medication Therapy Management Session?
A one-on-one appointment with your pharmacist to review all your medications and improve outcomes.
Can my medication be packaged in a way that helps me to take them on time as prescribed?

How can I get more medication?
You may call your pharmacy team during normal business hours at 360-685-5000. If you choose to leave a message, make sure you leave your name, date of birth, and a good callback number. If you are a caregiver, please be sure to leave your name as well as the patient’s name and date of birth.
How do I handle adverse reactions?
Some adverse reactions you may have are expected and some are not. You may have been taught how to administer your injections at your physician’s office or one of our knowledgeable pharmacists will go over what to expect while on therapy. You will also have an opportunity to discuss possible reactions with a pharmacist when you receive your first course of therapy. You may also call your Pharmacy Team at 360-685-5000 during normal business hours Monday through Friday 9am-6pm and Saturday 9am-5pm. If your reaction is of a critical nature, you should call 911.
