Major changes to Northwest Conference set to take place during fall sports season Zen Hill Sports Reporter

For nearly two decades the Northwest Conference operated as a multi-classification league that pinned 1A, 2A and 3A schools against one another for its league matches. With Sultan growing the conference to 17 teams, that model reached its breaking point. Beginning this fall, the NWC is executing a structural change by abandoning the allclassification grind. The league is moving toward classificationheavy scheduling. It’s a monumental pivot to protect studentathletes, increase competition levels and secure crucial nonleague freedom to help for postseason seeding. “We’ve been able to manage the schedule with 14 schools since 2007,” Nooksack Valley

athletic director Tom Harmon said. “But we added Oak Harbor, we added Lakewood, and pushed it a little bit. Adding [Sultan] makes it 17 schools, which makes a 16- game league schedule problematic. So, what do we do?” Sultan High School had been searching for a new league after becoming ineligible for the 1A Emerald Sound Conference after being reclassified as a 2A in 2024. The KingCo rejected Sultan, but the NWC is a welcoming home for the Turks. “The whole league unanimously voted them in,” Lynden athletic director Mike McKee said. “We can’t get schools to join us up here, so we have a heart for schools that nobody wants.” The move carries a massive reward for the conference’s 2A schools. Postseason berths are

dictated by the WIAA’s twoyear classification cycles, which allocate state tournament spots based on the number of schools within a district tier. By adding an extra school to the District’s 2A division, the league gains an upside for the postseason math with one more team than District 5. “It gives us an extra [state] berth in a two year cycle,” McKee said. “Adding that one 2A school gives us an extra state berth every other year, which is huge in a league as competitive as ours.” However, expanding to a 17-school league forced a major structural shift in the NWC’s scheduling format. In sports like soccer and volleyball, teams are limited to 16-game regular season schedules. Under the old system, a 17-school round-robin would completely

choke out non-conference opportunities. “As it sits right now — before the addition of Sultan — you get one non-league game,” Meridian athletic director Bryant Michaelson said. “If you’re like Sehome in soccer and you have aspirations of being a state champion every single year, you can’t go out and schedule matches against schools from Seattle that’ll improve your RPI.” To preserve those crucial out-of-league tests, NWC teams will no longer play across classifications for mandatory league games. Instead, cross-classification showdowns will be treated as optional non-league games. The sports being affected by the changes are soccer, basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball. 1A schools will play each other a minimum of two times in a season with one home game and one away game for each school. The 2A schools will play each other twice and 3A schools will have three matchups against one another every season. This way of operation isn’t uncommon. Most conferences in the state don’t feature crossclassification league games. At the helm of these changes is Blaine’s athletic director Chas Kok. The idea for the new scheduling format stemmed from the way soccer scheduling used to be in the conference prior to the 2024 season, where the 1A teams would play each other twice. “The past two years we’ve gone away from that and gone back to the original soccer schedule,” Kok said. “In doing

3 that, the records are pretty imbalanced because when you have that many athletes on the field, it’s challenging.” For the league’s 1A schools — Lynden Christian, Nooksack Valley, Meridian, Mount Baker and Blaine — the traditional grind against 2A and 3A giants wasn’t always positive. When a small school in a rebuilding cycle is forced to face a 2A or 3A juggernaut, the resulting blowouts hurt the program’s future. “It’s a known thing that you’re going to go in and get smoked by some of these bigger schools,” Michaelson said. “It means that kids who are good athletes that could help turn your program around shy away from playing.” By shifting to an eight-game 1A league schedule where small schools play each other twice, programs can find a competitive balance to foster a winning culture. It also leaves room for

eight non-league games, which can be played against other Northwest Conference schools. For 2A schools like Lynden, there’ll be 14 league games for a sport like volleyball with room to add other opponents. There’ll be guaranteed non-league games in the conference between opponents of similar skill based on their record from the previous two years. For Lynden volleyball, they’ll face the best 3A (Ferndale) and 1A (Meridian) in the conference from the last two years. “If we want to pick up Lynden Christian, we’d have to do that as a foundation game through the WIAA,” McKee said. “We’re doing that. We’re still able to keep that rivalry game.” The Lynden and Lynden Christian matchup loses a bit of juice with the game being nonleague, but the rivalry’s roots mean much more than a win or

The Lynden versus Lynden Christian rivalry matchup will still exist under the new format, but it will no longer count toward each school’s conference records. (Zen Hill/Lynden Tribune)

4 loss in a column. A possible negative to the change is how it affects the 3A schools, who now have to play their three opponents three times in a season. Playing the same team three times in a season can feel unnecessary. But with the opportunity for more non-league games, Ferndale can play regular season matchups against 3A District 1 schools that they often don’t see until the postseason. “Sometimes we get looked at in this multi-classification league and the WESCO doesn’t see our competition,” Ferndale athletic director Eric Tripp said. “Now, if we get more opportunities, we can compare ourselves to more of the WESCO so we can see what the field looks like heading into the playoffs. We’re trying to be creative to create a more competitive balance.” Every level will be affected by the changes when it comes

sports now playing a home and away match against the same opponent, it gives both communities and student bodies an opportunity to have the home court advantage. “Playing teams that are closer in your enrollment size and in your vicinity will help bring back rivalries,” Kok said. “For the 1As, we have all of our boys and girls basketball games as double headers. It gives that small town feel.” One sport being uniquely affected by the change is baseball. Instead of the current format of playing two or three different teams a week, in 2027 teams will have a week-long series of three games. This creates a strategy around pitching. “You’re gonna see the other team’s ace, you’re gonna see their two and you’re gonna see the depth of their pitching over a three-game span in a week,” Kok said. “I think that’s a pretty

to playoffs. Meridian’s boys soccer team was 9-4-2 this past season and won District 1, but was seeded 12th for the 1A state tournament. They defied that seeding and made it to the state championship match. “We probably should have been a top-10 seed,” Michaelson said. “We were 12th and the reason was because we had four losses, but those were to Sehome, Bellingham, Squalicum and Mount Vernon. [The new format] will help you schedule teams in your own classification, and it’ll help theoretically improve your overall record.” Every school in the conference now has the freedom to schedule more non-league games, which can impact playoff seeding through RPI (the WIAA’s mathematical ranking of teams). Another lasting impact from the scheduling changes is how it’ll impact rivalries. With most

creative thing.” This scheduling overhaul represents more than just a logistical fix for a 17-team league. It’s a modernization of the Northwest Conference. The league’s athletic directors have managed to strike a delicate balance between preserving the hyper-local rivalries that define Whatcom County sports and adapting to the statewide, RPI-driven postseason landscape. The upcoming school year will serve as a learning curve for coaches, athletes and fans alike. But the consensus across the region’s athletic departments remains entirely unified. The old era served its purpose, but the new era is built to help local athletes compete and win on the biggest stage possible. -- Contact Zen Hill at sports@lyndentribune.com
