MORE ‘SHOCKING’ FIGURES REVEAL SEWAGE LEVELS IN RIVER LIM WATER quality testing carried out in the River Lim in February has again shown high levels of E. coli bacteria, which is an indicator of sewage pollution.
The Environment Agency testing showed that the quality was at its lowest at the surface water outfall, which pours into the river at Woodmead Road, where a staggering 27,200 units of harmful E. coli were found in 100ml

of water. The lowest reading was taken just before this surface water outfall, with the Lim showing 110 units of E. coli per 100ml at Woodmead Road. Just 1 unit of E. coli per 100ml of water is considered unsafe to drink. Swimming beaches should not exceed 88 units and
beaches not designated for bathing should not exceed 406 units. E. coli is one of the major pathogens associated with waterborne disease. It can cause a range of infections including urinary tract infection, cystitis (infection of the bladder), and intestinal infection.
