YME Regis is one of the most popular resorts on the south coast and at Christmas the town takes on an almost magical aura.
It’s not just because our town has what many believe are the best festive illuminations for miles around - although many travel into town just to see the Christmas lights - it’s because Lyme’s yearround quaintness generates a genuine feel-good factor at this time of year. WIDELY regarded as one of the best displays in the South West, Lyme Regis’ impressive Christmas lights will be switched on on Saturday, December 1st. Improving the town’s Christmas lights display was an ambition of six times Mayor of Lyme Regis, the late Barbara Austin MBE. She formed a small committee who worked tirelessly with her to ensure that Lyme Regis had one of the best displays for miles around. When Barbara died at the end of 2012, the committee decided to carry on her work and, under the guidance of chairman Christine Lovell, they have continued to raise thousands of pounds each year to keep Barbara’s legacy alive. For this year’s big switch on, children are invited to join in the Christmas lantern workshop in Lyme Regis Baptist Church Hall from 3pm, or bring along your pre-made creations for judging at 4.30pm. The annual Christmas Lantern Parade will follow, including Lyme Regis Majorettes and Father Christmas, setting off down Broad Street at 5.15pm with the displays across the street lighting up as it passes underneath. The Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Michaela Ellis, will then light up the main focal point, the Christmas tree at the bottom of Broad Street, provided every year by Penn Farm, at 5.30pm. The mayor will be joined by Albie Weldin from Uplyme, who won a reading challenge earlier this year at Lyme Regis Library to lead the lantern parade and help switch on the lights.

Celebrate Christmas around the tree JOIN one of Lyme Regis’ longest running Christmas traditions at the annual Carols Around the Tree event on Saturday, December 22nd. Organised by the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis, the event always attracts a big crowd and this year will raise funds for Julia’s House Hospice. Traditional carols around the town’s Christmas tree in Broad Street will be accompanied by Lyme Regis Town Band from 7pm and hot soup will be served in the interval.

The Healing Room SAM Manning’s journey as a holistic therapist started in 2016, after working in mental health for 15 years with adolescents, adults, early intervention in psychosis and the elderly. THE Aromantique Studio is located within the artisan business community at the ambient Town Mill, conveniently situated at the heart of Lyme Regis, next to the River Lim and just moments from the seafront. Heather’s passion for essential oils and the art of aromatherapy was instilled in the early 1970s, when she worked for Robert Tisserand. She studied at the University of Salford and was awarded a BSc (Joint Hon) degree in Counselling and Complementary Medicine, and Masters certificates in Supervision of Counselling, and Mindfulness. Fancy dress is not compulsory but vicars, dinosaurs, and crusaders are expected to turn up for a splash in the sea at 11am. The event is planned by the Lyme Regis and Charmouth RNLI Guild and regularly raises in the region of £2,000 for the lifesaving charity. Charmouth’s Royal Oak pub is again supporting the swim and will be providing mulled wine for the courageous participants. A spokesman for the organisers said: “If the weather co-operates we are hoping for the usual big turn out of those who just want to enjoy the spectacle and, of course, those brave enough to dip more than a toe in the chilly surf.” Members of the volunteer crew of the Lyme Regis RNLI lifeboat will be keeping a watchful eye out during the event which will be subject to a risk assessment of conditions during the morning. The iconic Lyme Lunge will then return to Lyme Regis beach on New Year’s Day, and a fancy dress dip in the balmy waters of Lyme Bay is just the thing to lift your spirits the morning after. This year, the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis will be supporting the Dorset County Hospital Cancer Charity Appeal and other Rotary charities. As those of you who have taken part in previous years will know it’s always a great occasion with thousands of spectators supporting a growing number participants, estimated over 600 in 2018. Swimmers will parade their costumes on the beach before a quick dash to the sea at 1pm sharp. AN email from a family who love Lyme Regis invited me to photograph six miniature pure white schnauzer pups they had brought to town with their family over Christmas. This was during the school holidays, so, after learning how to spell schnauzer I set off for a meeting with the family and the cutest bundle of white fur, consisting of mum with six pups, all looking like toy shop teddy bears. I don’t know why but one of the six, called Alfie, caught my eye. He wasn’t quite as boisterous as the others but inside my head I had already imagined him on a Christmas card, on a snowy set I had constructed for a miniature pig calendar. Alfie was the most well behaved little pup I have ever photographed. The photoshoot took two minutes and the image went up the line to my greeting card distributors and is now in the shops for everyone to buy. Alfie has now been immortalised as a cute Christmas puppy!

THE Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis delivers intensive and highly practical boat building and woodworking courses that run from two days to 40 weeks. The flagship 40 week Boat Building course attracts people from all walks of life, from those wishing to change careers, to retirees, hobbyists and school leavers. The diverse draw of the course means that no two classes are alike, with 18 students joining from the UK and further afield; some from far as USA, New Zealand and across Europe. The course equips students with the vital skills essential to the marine industry, allowing for graduates to establish themselves as trained boat builders. Alongside boat building, the academy teaches a wide array of woodworking courses, from a basic five-day introduction to the craft, all the way to, the 12-week Fine Woodworking course. The woodworking courses are taught by accomplished furniture maker, Mark Ripley, whose career spans over 28 years in the industry. During their time on the course, stu-

dents will make a dovetailed lidded box, a table and a cabinet. Towards the latter stage of the course, each student will design and make a personal project piece of their own specification. Over the years these projects have ranged from a music stand, a toy chest, wooden bicycle, a ukulele a deck chair and even a tennis racket. With the skill level differing from each student, the ‘longer’ courses are all taught at the same level regardless of experience. All that is asked for is enthusiasm, a willing attitude and a commitment to hard work. TART your Christmas celebrations by picking the perfect pine from Penn Farm. The Chapman family has been growing Christmas trees at their Monkton Wyld farm, between Lyme and Charmouth, since 1976. Penn Farm Christmas trees provide other species including the non-drop Nordmann fir, but it’s the spruce which are the most successful with the farm’s north-facing aspect, perfect for the healthy growth of its full green foliage. They are also mostly left alone by the native roe deer, who find them less palatable than other varieties with softer needles. SNOW WHITE and the Seven Dwarves

MARKING 35 years since its reformation in 1985, Lyme Regis Pantomime Society will present their own take on Disney classic ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ in 2019. The show is being directed by Sarah Causley with assistance from Amanda Rattenbury-Davies and Lorraine Knowles, with Sarah and Amanda also leading the choreography, and Lauren Good acting as musical director. The story is based around the Wicked Queen (Lorraine Knowles) and her attempts to do away with Snow White (Jodie Glover), whose beauty has outshone her own, meaning she is no longer the fairest in the land. Assisted by Muddles (Dan Edwards), Herman (Drew Morris), Prince Lorenzo (Harvey Causley), the Seven Dwarfs (Jake Causley, Amanda Rattenbury-Davies, Naomi Davies-Griffiths, Megan Flux, Charis Holland, Cody Wootton, Grace Knowles) and Fairy Goodheart (Tracy Wood), audiences will be taken on a hilarious romp through the Kingdom of Moravia with lots of traditional pantomime humour and antics to try and save Snow White and defeat the powerful Queen. In true pantomime fashion there is lots of audience participation, dreadful jokes, bright lights, glitter and fabulous costumes. Boos, hisses and the infamous “it’s behind you” finish off the plot perfectly! All of this wrapped up with a bit of pantomime magic! The principal cast will be supported by a talented chorus, backstage crew, as well as a live band. Rehearsals are now well underway and tickets will go on sale in January at Lyme Regis Tourist Information Centre, costing £10 for adults and £6 for 14s and under.

HEY may be a vast ocean apart, but one man’s links between Lyme Regis and Bermuda have stood the test of time for over 400 years, and are still celebrated today.
Admiral Sir George Somers, a former mayor and MP for Lyme Regis, is known for creating the first settlement in Bermuda. As admiral of the Virginia Company’s Third Supply - the fleet of nine ships which left from Plymouth in June 1609 headed to supply the new English colony of Jamestowne, Virginia - he bravely steered his flagship Sea Venture through a tumultuous storm onto the reefs surrounding Bermuda, saving all 150 crew and passengers. Bermuda was previously known as the Isle of Devils because of the dangerous reefs and the eerie call of the native Cahow seabird, which scared off superstitious sailors. The survivors of the Sea Venture must have felt huge relief when they soon realised there were no evil spirits waiting for them on shore, but instead a plentiful island paradise. Sir George was admiral at sea, but on land roles were reversed and it was the Lieutenant Governor elect of Jamestowne, Sir Thomas Gates, a passenger on the Sea Venture - who hailed from Colyford – who assumed authority, which resulted in two factions among the surviving mariners and soldiers. Work began on building two new ships, Deliverance and Patience, made from Bermuda cedar and salvage from the wreck of the Sea Venture, to continue their journey to Jamestowne. During construction Sir George took the opportunity to row around Bermuda, also known as Somers Isles, mapping its coastline. In 1610, after 10 months, when
the new ships were ready to set sail, two stayed behind - Robert Waters, who had been accused of mutiny after murdering a sailor and fleeing into the forest, and Christopher Carter. Carter has since been described as the first permanent resident of Bermuda, remaining on the island despite other ships coming and going in the following years. The two new ships made it to Jamestowne loaded with salt pork from wild boars - left on Bermuda by the Spanish, who had first discovered the islands but never settled there - to find starvation and disease had taken over with less than 60 settlers remaining. Seven remaining ships from the Third Supply had made it to their original destination, but the passengers had only added to the problem in Jamestowne, as the Sea Venture had been carrying most of the supplies for the new colony. It is thought that if Deliverance and Patience had arrived just days later, they would have found no survivors. Having decided the new colony unviable, the passengers and crews from Bermuda, together with the remaining Jamestowne survivors, set sail to return to England, but a day later met the fourth relief fleet in the James River and the settlers returned to Jamestowne. Somers returned to Bermuda for more supplies but died shortly afterwards, most likely from food poisoning. His heart and entrails were buried in Bermuda and the rest of his preserved remains taken back to Lyme Regis in the Patience by his nephew, Matthew, landing at the Cobb for interment at Whitchurch Canonicorum, near Charmouth, in July 1611. In 1612 the Plough arrived in Bermuda carrying 50 of the first settlers from England. The town of St George’s was established that year and designated as Bermuda’s first capital. It is now the oldest continually inhabited English town in the New World, with a rich history which is actively preserved. Sir George’s legacy continues to be celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic by the Lyme Regis/St George’s Twinning Association, with members visiting St George’s each April and a reciprocal party coming to Lyme each July for the Admiral Sir George Somers Commemoration Parade. Lyme and St George’s been officially twinned since 1996 and in 2015 the two towns ‘tripled’ with Jamestown, Virginia, forming the Historic Atlantic Triangle.

HE new-look Pilot Boat in Lyme Regis, which enjoyed a brilliant summer after its million-pound-plus refurbishment, is gearing up for a bumper Christmas.
Licensees Robin and Angela Collyns, who took over the Palmers Brewery pub and restaurant in June, with son Ben, who is the general manager, are investing heavily in transforming the Pilot into a winter wonderland, promising the best Christmas decorations in town. The Pilot has introduced a new winter menu with a number of festive specials, Christmas cocktails and yuletide drinks. The Pilot is also catering for Christmas parties for up to 20 people with pricing to suit all budgets, and live music will be featured throughout December on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays showcasing the very best of local talent. Mr and Mrs Collyns say they are delighted with the response after their first summer trading, after the pub was closed for several months for the extensive refurbishment, the result of a significant investment by the Bridport-based brewery. Mr and Mrs Collyns and the family come to Lyme Regis with extensive experience in the hospitality trade. Before taking over the Pilot Boat the couple, who met when they both worked for Berni Inns in the 1980s, ran the City Gate Hotel in Exeter and before that The Godolphin Arms in Marazion in Cornwall. With the front part of the building retaining its pub atmosphere, the former ‘Inn Plaice’ and back bar at the Pilot has been converted into an ultra-modern bar and restaurant with an open air terrace seating 60. In all the establishment offers seating for around 185 diners for meals throughout the day, including breakfast. Mrs Collyns said the Californian-style service was proving very popular with customers but they were keen to seek advice and suggestions from all those visiting the pub. The Pilot also has three well appointed bedrooms, one overlooking the sea, which have been much in demand. Mr and Mrs Collyns are keen to immerse themselves into the community life of Lyme Regis and have already recognised what a popular and vibrant the town it is with a growing reputation for high-quality food outlets. A number of regular events are being hosted at the Pilot Boat, including weekly quiz nights for teams of two and more, offering a £100 jackpot prize every week. There will also be a cash prize for the winning team and a booby prize for the team that comes bottom on the night. Sunday markets are also being held in the front bar area of the Pilot with pitches available at no cost for local craft and food producers and charities. The Lyme Bay is the perfect setting to chill out, relax and to experience the simple yet innovative menus in the company of knowledgeable and friendly staff. The café and bar serves up a feast of locally sourced food and drinks, making the most of the wealth of artisan food and drink producers in Dorset and the South West. The Lyme Bay is keen to champion these producers who strive to produce the highest quality produce. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, including a range of delicious artisan breads, pastries and cakes with gluten free options available, are served seven days a week. The Lyme Bay is now also open on Friday and Saturday evenings for laid back drinks, nibbles and rather good food! HEARTY homecooked meal is the perfect way to warm up this winter, and you won’t be disappointed at the Black Dog Team Room in Uplyme, where customers come back time and time again for owner Rod and Sonia’s generous homemade fayre and loose leaf tea. Black Dog Tea Room is dog-friendly so a walk up the River Lim with your furry friend can end with a lovely cup of tea and a cake, snack or a filling lunch with Rod and Sonia serving up generous helpings, all lovingly made by hand and excellently presented. Nearly everything is made on the premises - bread, rolls, cakes and scones - and they use locally-sourced produce where possible. The bacon for the Somerset brie and bacon rolls comes from Colyton Butchers, the eggs used in the roasted pepper, mushroom and cherry tomato quiche are free range and come from just up the road, and the toast used in Rod's Rustic Rarebit is made on site using flour handmilled at the Town Mill in Lyme Regis. With need for more space, Rod and Sonia have built a summerhouse as an extension to the light and airy tea room, with the idea that it can be hired out for meetings or private lunches. It looks out over the landscaped garden, where you can also enjoy lunch on those warmer days, and has a lovely view of the Lym Valley. The Black Dog Tea Room is on the Lyme Road heading towards Lyme Regis and is open every day except Wednesdays, when Rod and Sonia can instead be found walking their two dogs, Martha and Jorge, along the east beach towards Charmouth, Martha chasing the seagulls and Jorge meeting new friends to play with, and Rod and Sonia enjoying the walk and sea air.
