THREE LIVES LOST IS THREE TOO MANY

WorkSafe data highlights the dangers across Victoria this year alone. Manufacturing was the state’s deadliest industry with 14 fatalities, followed by construction with 13 deaths, with nine fatalities in agriculture, forestry and fishing for the second year in a row. Vehicles and machinery were involved in 21 fatalities and were again the most dangerous hazards in Victorian workplaces. “Hundreds of families, loved ones and colleagues left devastated by a death that could have been prevented,” Mr Radford said. “It’s difficult to imagine the indescribable pain they are feeling. That’s why I’m urging all Victorians to reflect on the lasting impact of a workplace tragedy.” Mr Radford said this

demonstrated that no one was immune from the devastating consequences of workplace trauma and why health and safety at work was everyone’s business. He said WorkSafe aimed to make Victoria to be the safest place to work in Australia and one of the safest in the world by 2024. “Out of respect for those we have lost and their families, it is time we said enough. There is simply no excuse for cutting corners when it comes to workplace safety,” Mr Radford said. “We need that kind of strong and decisive action to translate into how we think about safety at work. But we won’t stop there. We won’t rest until no Victorian dies at work.”

AGRICULTURE continues to be one of the most dangerous industries in Gippsland, with three fatalities recorded in the region’s agriculture, forestry and fishing sector in 2021, according to WorkSafe data. There were six workplace deaths recorded in Gippsland last year, up from five in 2020. There was one fatality each in the region’s transport industry, mining, and professional or technical services, on top of three in the ag sector. Two of these fatalities were caused by a vehicle accident, with one death each caused by chemicals contact, hitting stationary objects, a rollover, and a drowning. WorkSafe chief executive

officer Colin Radford said too many Victorians continued to have their lives changed forever due to the loss of a loved one at work. He said WorkSafe would be targeting those workplaces where the worst injuries and fatalities are predicted to occur, addressing the risks and hazards before workers were harmed. “It’s simply unacceptable that we are seeing the same industries and hazards feature prominently in workplace deaths and serious injuries year after year,” Mr Radford said. Across Victoria, 66 people died as a result of work-related incidents in 2021, following the loss of 73 lives in both of the previous two years. Six workers have already died
