GETTING TO KNOW YOU How architecture, neuroscience, and deep listening shape homes that truly feel like home
Written by Milton Shinberg
Feeling at home in your home depends on many factors, but one of them is how well the architecture embraces who you are, including how you want to feel, how you want to connect with family and friends and with nature. While that seems obvious, it isn’t always achieved in design. It’s worth asking Why?
One reason is that getting it right isn’t so easy. Life and architecture, and how they intertwine, is complicated. For just one thing, how does the architect who’s designing your house know your deeper needs, beyond superficial needs, and your aspirations? Gaining that understanding takes focused, determined, and persistent probing, an in-depth dialogue with your architect. Just asking clients what they like and don’t like is a start, certainly, but a very limiting one.
Knowing the desired pieces of a house, the “program,” such as the number of bedrooms and baths, how the kitchen relates to family space or a formal dining room, or how many cars in the garage, also doesn’t move the collaboration of client and architect beyond the basics. For that, the conversation hast to promote dialogue about how to achieve a truly beautiful, comfortable home that uplifts the spirits of those who live there and does so day in and day out. When you enter your home, the architecture should help you exhale and relax into your private domain. Can that need be translated well and elegantly, with an underlying tone of friendliness, into the qualities of “home?”
The answer is yes. Those are all aspects of “hominess,” and there are ways of capturing that intimate quality with increasing precision. Neuroscientist and Neuroaesthetics researchers have begun to make it a topic for careful investigation and collaboration with architects to help tease out the pieces of this delicate and delicious puzzle.
That’s been my own quest as well, learning more about people, finding paths for getting to know more about the people I design for in ways that make a major difference in design. My book, People-Centered Architecture: Design, Practice, and Education, is a comprehensive assemblage of what I’ve learned about it over many decades of practice and teaching.
A considerable number of insights arise from understanding the sciences of human perception and cognition and from psychology and sociology, something I began studying in the 1980’s. In the book, I share how every one of those insights can land in excellent, nurturing design, in solutions that would not reveal themselves otherwise. More and more, architects are getting on board with that approach.
“
Beauty and “hominess” are topics that can keep us talking, and will keep us talking, for as long as architects and clients create places to live our lives.
Even anthropology turns out to be a particularly rich place to dig for architectural thinking. The architectural qualities our very distant ancestors sought for their protection, spaces from caves to caves and rudimentary villages, are burned in, hardwired into our deepest architectural sensibilities and preferences. We differ from them more in clothing than core. Your ancestors should feel comfortable and secure in your cave.
There are other resources that architects are using more and more and that clients can explore them as well. Among them is the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture, created as a venue for architects and scientists to investigate the underlying forces of architectural experience. The conversations are amazing and non-architects do attend their conferences.
I’ve pursued the neuroscience of architectural experience and design for the last 40 years, both as a practicing architect and as a long-time adjunct professor at Catholic University. I teach a course called Beauty & Brains that my architecture students love. They find the topics compelling and they bring the ideas to their studio projects. That also comes together very nicely in the ongoing conversations I’ve had over the years with the very talented Salo Levinas, co-founder of Shinberg Levinas Architects.
Salo and I used to say “beauty sells,” and that’s true. But why does it sell? That conversation will continue, not just at Shinberg Levinas, but in architectural firms around world now, as it has for millennia. And of course it doesn’t stop there. The conversation isn’t, and never has been, only among architects. Beauty and “hominess” are topics that can keep us talking, and will keep us talking, for as long as architects and clients create places to live our lives.
