Arizona’s Springtime Baseball Tradition by Chalyce McQueen EACH SPRING, Arizona becomes a gathering place for baseball fans as Major League teams arrive for Cactus League spring training. What began as a modest experiment in the desert has grown into one of the Valley’s most beloved seasonal traditions. Arizona’s connection to spring training dates back to 1947, when Cleveland Indians owner Bill Veeck established a spring training base in Tucson and encouraged the New York Giants to join him in Arizona. Teams were drawn by the state’s dry climate, abundant sunshine, and the opportunity to train in an environment that was more welcoming and inclusive during an era when segregation remained prevalent elsewhere. Throughout the 1950s and beyond, additional franchises made the move west, steadily expanding the league. Today, the Cactus League hosts 15 Major League teams, creating one of the most concentrated spring training experiences in professional sports. Beyond the excitement on the field, the Cactus League has become an important part of Arizona’s culture and economy, drawing more than1.7 million fans each year and generating significant economic activity for local communities. Historic training sites, including early facilities in Mesa and Scottsdale, helped shape the league’s legacy and remain part of its story today.
