SPORTS
Athletics have long been a part of Luther College High School’s tradition. Luther’s athletic teams and individual athletes demonstrate passion and determination, helping to build Lion pride. Student involvement in athletics promotes not only physical health and team spirit, but also cooperation, communication, sportsmanship and time management. Game schedules for most of Luther’s athletics teams can be found on the school event calendar or on the Regina High School Athletics Association’s (RHSAA) website.

BADMINTON Coaches: Mark Anderson, Lindsay Braul
CURLING
Tryouts begin in late February with approximately 20 - 25 students. Once a week, open gym time is offered to any badminton players, whether they are on the team or not. Several mini-meets occur each week, giving players a chance to play in a tournament format against 2 or 3 schools before the city championship which usually occurs on the last Saturday in April. Players who win gold or silver at cities advance to regionals and even to provincials.
Coach: Joel Beres The overall philosophy is to have fun, but at the same time we encourage skills and strategy development. We also work on the development of interpersonal skills such as working together cooperatively and following through on commitment. As a result, all students are expected to attend all practices and games. The curling season runs from mid-November to mid-January and all practices are from 4:00 to 5:30. Once the regular season begins, there is one practice and one game per week.
CROSS COUNTRY
RUNNING Coaches: Colleen Wilkinson, Carolyn Jukes
BASKETBALL Coaches: Dave Hall, Tanner Brightman, Mike Allen, Jessica Pultz The basketball teams play in the Large School Basketball League. The roster usually comprises 12 to 15 players. They play 2 to 3 times per week and practice on non- game days during the week. Teams will participate in conference play against other Large Schools as determined by the RHSAA. The Basketball start date is often the middle of November, with the season ending in the middle of March. The schedule is complemented by tournaments, both in town and out of town, dependent on the team.

Calling all runners! The cross country season kicks off on the first day of school each year. It is important that all interested students see the coaches as soon as possible in order to register as members of the Luther College cross country team. We need a minimum of 4 boys and 4 girls from each grade to fill our roster. We run non-competitively several times a week
no time outs, no half times, no substitutions with the goal of strengthening bodies and minds with aerobic, power and endurance training. We represent Luther competitively each week at Douglas Park. Our season goes from the first day of school in the fall until the middle of October. Previous training is an asset but not necessary. All interested students are encouraged to participate.

GOLF Coach: Jay Willimott Every year, Luther College High School fields a competitive golf team to participate in a series of tournaments. LCHS also offers a developmental program for students who wish to learn the game. Competitive golfers play in 4 tournaments during May and in the city championship, held in early June. To play competitive high school golf, players should have experience on a championship-length golf course. Developing golfers meet every week in May to learn golf skills, rules, and course etiquette. Luther golf is co-ed and players come from every grade.

FOOTBALL Coaches: Mark Becker, Troy Casper The Lions compete in the Regina Intercollegiate football league as a part of the Stewart (5A) Conference. In 2018 the team was voted as the league’s most Sportsmanlike Team. We are proud to play a tough game with class. Practices begin the last week in August and continue every school day. The regular season goes until late October. City & Provincial playoffs continue until early November. We also have a Spring camp (5 practices) in June. We have a no-cut policy and all students are eligible to play provided they meet SHSAA guidelines and have the permission of a parent or guardian.

Track & Field is a co-ed team sport of individual athletes. It is a beautiful sport of personal bests where the true spirit is captured by bettering previous performance(s). In the high school athletic scene it makes this sport unique. You are expected to show desire, commitment and effort. In exchange, we expect you to have high expectations of your coaches. It is our job to develop the programming and teach you the skills necessary to get the most out of this short season. It is our job to help you through workouts and competitions. Spread the word, a track team grows strong one athlete at a time.

SOCCER
VOLLEYBALL

Approximately 20 Luther College High School students from grades 9 to 12 participate in the soccer program each year. We enjoy a real international flavor as many dorm students participate in our soccer program. Our goals are to become a strong team and have fun by playing with energy and grit, improve our skills, build strong team spirit and develop new friendships.
The girls volleyball teams enjoy a busy and exciting season. Tryouts begin the first day of school and run for 3 days. We usually carry 12 to 15 girls on the team who play 1 game per week and practice 2 to 3 times per week. The volleyball season consists of regular season, playoff games, and usually a few tournaments.
Play hard every day.
ULTIMATE FRISBEE Coaches: Shannon Fink, Greg Smith Ultimate Frisbee is a highly energetic, spirited and co-ed competitive sport. Pre-season tryouts and practices take place indoors immediately following basketball season in April / May. The 6 week season occurs from May to June and finishes prior to final exams. Teams will be formed between the experienced and non-experienced players dependent on age and skill level. League games are scheduled once per week, and additional practices may he held at the coaches' discretion. In addition to regular play, there are 2 in-town one day tournaments. Ultimate Frisbee is not an RHSAA sanctioned sport, however, it is run in collaboration with RUFDC (Regina Ultimate Flying Disc Club). Come on out, have fun, and bring your friends.
HOCKEY Coaches: Shawn Stieb, Gregory Akulov, Terry Enns The Luther Lions hockey program offers students an excellent opportunity to participate in a fun, yet competitive, co-curricular program sanctioned by the RHSAA. Both female and male students are on the roster. In past years, the hockey team has traveled to places such as North Dakota, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg to play exhibition games and to attend professional hockey games. All games are from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. throughout the season.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES A variety of clubs and organizations thrive at Luther College High School. Whether you are interested in promoting socially responsible actions or building your writing portfolio, Luther is sure to have a group that is right for you. Keep in mind that there is always the opportunity to start new clubs if enough students are interested.

ART CLUB Advisor: Drew Hunter This club meets weekly to work on and share their art together.
ASTRONOMY CLUB Advisor: Derek Persson If you are interested in space or the stars come out to Astronomy Club. We meet, discuss and watch DVDs about all things astronomy.
AVE Advisor: Melissa Morgan The Advanced Vocal Ensemble (AVE) is an auditioned chamber choir chosen from members of the Luther College Senior Choir. They meet one hour per week and experience the challenge of singing in a small ensemble. AVE has gained a reputation for outstanding performances of quality choral repertoire and they can be heard at all Luther Choir Concerts.
BAND
BARBERSHOP AND GENTLEMEN’S CHOIR Advisor: Melissa Morgan These all male vocal ensembles are an opportunity for our tenors and basses to join together on a regular basis in song. The Barbershop and Gentlemen’s choir give performances at Candlelight, LIT half-time shows, Christmas Formal, and All College banquet and Home Concert. These ensembles are student lead and supervised by Dr. Morgan.
BUSINESS CLUB Advisor: Derek Persson
Advisor: Melissa Morgan The Luther College Concert Band is currently comprised of students from grades 9-12. While Band for credit is offered in semester 2, band students participate in ensembles for the Musical, Candlelight Services, and other select groups throughout the year. The Band goes on an annual tour and can be heard at the Optimist, Moose Jaw Band and Choir festivals as well as Luther’s Fine Arts Night.
Business Club is designed to educate students of Luther College High School in the art of business, trade, entrepreneurship, and personal finance. As well, we practice for the SBTA Case Study competition held in the spring. In future years, we hope to become involved in the Junior Achievement program and educate students on how to create their own business.
CHESS CLUB Advisor: Gregory Akulov Whether you are an expert at playing chess or you are just interested in learning how to play, the chess club welcomes students of all skills and grade levels.
CHRISTIAN CLUB / WHY NOT? Advisor: Shawn Stieb Christian Club is a place for everyone to explore their faith through times of worship, discussion and serving the community.

DEBATE CLUB Advisors: Kim Greenman, Mark Anderson Develop your public speaking skills by engaging in a highly-structured form of argument over a variety of topics. In order to widen your understanding of these issues, you have to learn to defend both sides of each debate topic. The club meets once a week to discuss the logistics of debate and engage in activities. Students debate other students and schools province-wide over the course of the year, and participate in 4 tournaments. There are debate workshops and opportunities to represent the school at a national level as well.
There is no conversation more boring than the one where everybody agrees.
For good ideas and true innovation, you need human interaction, conflict, argument, debate.
ENVIROTHON Advisor: Dave Hall Envirothon is an exciting event in which teams of five students exercise their environmental training and problem-solving skills in a competition centered on four universal testing categories (soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife) and a current environmental issue. We meet regularly, with some members competing at the provincial and national level.
GAY / STRAIGHT ALLIANCE Advisor: Bryan Belous This club promotes anti-bullying and anti-homophobia and seeks to create a safe and supportive environment for students.

GIRLS CHOIR Advisor: Deborah Nelson The Luther College Girls Choir enjoys a proud tradition of fine singing. The choir is composed of young women from grades 9 through 12 who love to sing. Over the past years the Girls Choir has participated at UNIFEST (University of Saskatchewan’s Music Festival), Rotary Carol Festival, Luther’s annual Candlelight Services, Regina Competitive Music Festival, Moose Jaw Band and Choir Festival and various churches throughout the province of Saskatchewan. The Girls Choir has received numerous awards at the Regina and Saskatchewan competitive musical festivals.
IMPROV Advisor: Kris Dueck Improv is a team sport where actors compete in five improvisational theatre sports creating scenes on the spot inspired by audience suggestions. Each year, Luther sends a number of teams to compete in the Canadian Improv Games Regional Tournament, where schools from Regina and the surrounding area compete for an opportunity to represent Saskatchewan at the national level. If you can think on your feet and be instantaneously creative, improv might be for you.

JAM CLUB
Handbells are an exciting part of the instrumental program at Luther College High School. Throughout the school year, students have a number of opportunities to participate in handbell choirs in Music 9, Choral 10 and Senior Choir. The handbell choirs are feature ensembles at the annual Candlelight Services.
Advisor: Tanner Brightman, Bryan Belous Jam club is hosted once a week to bring together Luther students and staff who love playing music of all genres! Musicians from beginner to advanced are welcome. Typically, the group will attempt to learn a song or two per week and meet the following week to play it together.
LANGUAGE EXCHANGE CLUB Advisor: Cornelia Taschow-Graupe This club gives an experience of learning diverse languages that are widely spoken. It matters not if you speak one language or even if you are not good at language. All students are welcome!

ME-TO-WE
MULTIFARIA (YEARBOOK)

The main vision of Me to We is to empower people to transform local and global communities by shifting from ‘me’ thinking to ‘we’ acting. Our group works on several fundraising projects throughout the year to support both global and local nonprofit organizations in their mission to help those in need. If you have a desire to support your global/local communities this is certainly a group for you!
Multifaria is our Luther Yearbook club. Students learn to edit photos, design layouts and create templates to show case our year.
We can not solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them. OUTDOOR EDUCATION CLUB Advisors: Dave Hall, Bryan Belous Outdoor Education Club at Luther College High School began in the mid-1970’s with Luther Biology teacher Randy Brooks coordinating field trips for his high school students. At that time, grade 11s hiked and repelled in the Montana Badlands, while senior students canoed on Otter Lake, along the Churchill River. Since then, outdoor education has become a popular co-curricular club that invites grade 10 through 12 students who love the great outdoors and are willing to experience something new to participate in special wilderness activities. In the winter season, students camp out in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. In early June, the students of Luther College High School travel 9 hours north to carry on the school’s legacy of canoeing Otter Lake. As part of the Churchill River, scenic Otter Lake belongs to a chain of lakes that span the width of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and empty in to the Hudson Bay.

ONE ACT PLAYS Advisor: Kris Dueck Every year, groups of students get together to act and otherwise assist in performing a one act play. The one act play festival is an early provincial event. Every year, we enter a play to our region, and we hold auditions to meet the demands of a new script.
Theatre is a powerful art form, it teaches lessons about life, society and emotion and more importantly yourself. PEER SUPPORT Advisor: David Peterson, Colleen Wilkinson, Bryan Belous Peer Support is a student-led group with the goal of supporting each member of the student body throughout their academic and personal endeavors. The Peer Support group meets regularly to discuss the prevalent issues facing students today and to further their skills as empathetic listeners and problem solvers.
PHOTO CLUB Advisor: Nora Marpole Photo Club is a fun way for students to get together and learn the fundamentals of photography. Pictures the members take are displayed in a variety of means, including being framed and hung throughout the school for all to enjoy. Members of the Photo Club volunteer to capture the essence of the different clubs and events for the yearbook as well as pictures for the Tatler. The club participates in the Regina High School Black & White photo competition and Fine Arts Night. This club is open to everyone who has a camera or a phone, and is interested in photography.

POM TEAM
ROBOTICS CLUB
Advisor: Leslie DeMars

The POM team is a blend of gymnastics, dance and traditional cheerleading. The team performs and competes at various events and competitions. The season practices begin in late October and continue until mid to late March, with competitions and performances many weekends in February and March.
Robotics allows students an opportunity to meet other students in the school with an interest in engineering and coding. In this club, students build, code, and compete using Sumobots to push another bot out of the ring using their own designed strategies. This year, we had 10 teams of 2 students, with the best 2-3 teams moving on to represent Luther at the Robot Rumble in Saskatoon near the end of March.
There are endless things to discover about robotics. 12

YOUTH FOR A LIVING EARTH
TATLER
Advisor: Dave Hall
The Tatler is the Luther College High School student newspaper. We encourage a wide range of contributions, including articles, editorials, interviews, reviews, humour, creative writing, comics, photographs, and art work.
Youth for the Living Earth (YFLE) is a student centered environmental club that focusses on sustainability. The club meets regularly in semester 2 to identify areas of our school, community and the world where sustainable practices can be enhanced.
SOCIAL CONCERNS (AMNESTY/ SADD) CLUB Advisors: Bryan Belous, Andrea Bollinger Amnesty Club is a fun club where discussions on global issues occur and how we can end them. Throughout the year we participate in active events like Write for Rights and attend local amnesty meeting that take place in Regina! Amnesty International is not limited to a specific group of people so come one, come all! Students Against Drunk Driving raises awareness about issues relating to drinking and driving within the student body and the larger community.

WRITING CLUB Advisor: Cornelia Taschow-Graupe Writing Club is dedicated to exploring creativity. Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings where we practice and discuss how to improve our skills as students and writers. We open ourselves up to fiction, novels, short stories, poetry, scripts, essays and make regular submissions to the Tatler. We provide a friendly, enlightening environment in which we enhance creative skills for potential authors or students hoping to feel more confident in English class.
SERVICE CLUB Advisor: Andrea Bollinger, Jessica Pultz, David Peterson Service Club is dedicated to service and community outreach. Some of our club members volunteer at the Regina Open Door Society, a non-profit organization that provides settlement and integration services to refugees and immigrants in Regina. Other club members tutor young students in math and reading at Mother Teresa Middle School, an innovative school program designed to help those students who experience financial and social challenges but who show academic promise.
Advisor: Jon Graf Dances, fun days, intramurals, fundraising, clubs, spirit days, and the All College banquet are all the responsibility of Luther College’s Student Representative Council (SRC). Members of the SRC are elected by the student body at the end of each year for the following school year. Positions on the council include president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary and members-atlarge. Representatives from each grade also assist the SRC. In addition to organizing student events, the SRC serves as the voice of the student body. It also organizes fundraising activities within the school for different charities.
