What exactly is the definition of community? In an article in the American Journal of Community Psychology the term ‘community’ has been defined as ‘ A feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group,’ We in this country are famous worldwide for our caring attitude and nature towards each other and to others and at no time is that more obvious than in summertime when a lot of our community/ voluntary and sporting organisations take part in lots of charity fundraising activities. These we at ‘Locals’ magazines not only promote but actively support. Based on our many years experiences in our communities we recognise that there are many therapeutic benefits to community activities not only in a monetary sense but in the sense of well being and belonging. Community is not only about residency of an area, village or town, but also about supporting each other whether thats caring for a neighbour or shopping locally as well as playing your part in the local charitable/ voluntary and sporting organisations. It is also about integrating in activities which not only benefit you and your family but those of your neighbours and friends as well. We as a community based magazine are committed to promoting all such activities and none more so than at this time of the year. At present we all are experiencing rising prices as internationally fuel prices rise and the war in Ukraine raises grain prices amongst other things. However one thing seems to be obvious which is that local service suppliers and retailers are not only striving to keep prices low and offer value for money as they did during the heyday of the pandemic but also are showing in a practical sense what it is to be a part of a community. As the phsychologists article also said we have - ‘ a shared faith that members’ needs will be met through commitment to be together.’ It is that commitment that strengthens and binds our residents across Fingal into the wonderful ‘community’ we have today. Please have a great July and keep supporting our local suppliers, retailers and charitable voluntary and sporting organisations.

Fingal County Council brought together Councillors, contractors and staff for an onsite briefing in Swords at St. Cronan’s Road and Brackenstown Avenue as work got underway recently on upgraded, protected cycle lanes. These works include upgrading of the existing walking and cycling infrastructure in the area to improve safety, reduce traffic speed and create better connections to local schools and to Swords Manor Football Club, public transport and local amenities in the area. The works also include realignment and upgrading of junctions, road surface improvements, traffic calming, improvement of crossing points, segregation of cycle lanes using bollards and providing safer routes to school for St. Cronan’s National School. Fingal’s Director of Environment, Climate Action and Active Travel, David Storey, says works like these are key to improving road safety and mobility. ‘Swords is a great example of a town that due to the growth of its population needs traffic calming and Active Travel infrastructure to support people who want to walk

and cycle to school or work safely. These upgraded, protected cycle lanes offer protection for both the cyclist and the driver and this is particularly important around St. Cronan’s National School.’ Fingal County Council concluded a 5-week public consultation on these protected cycle lane upgrades for St Cronan’s Avenue and Brackenstown Road in late April. A report on submissions received from the public was published in May. The consultation report is available to the public to view online at fingal. ie/activetravel/stcronansavenue. Works began on Monday, 23 May as GMC Utilities Group, installed a site works compound at Ardcian Park and works are due to be completed in Quarter 4 of 2022. Works will be completed on a phased basis to minimise disruption to the local area and those travelling in the area should keep an eye on Fingal County Council’s Facebook and Twitter for updates relating to traffic calming measures as they occur.If you would like to learn more about the details of these works please visit: fingal.ie/ activetravel/stcronansavenue

Tidy Towns Competition will be travelling the length and breathe of Ireland visiting each village, town and city to award the points they believe each entrant merits. Swords Tidy Towns would ask residents and visitors to bare this fact in mind and be extra vigilant with regard to disposing of litter. Our hard-working volunteers have been putting in the hours these past few months in preparation for the judges visit. We never know when the judges will arrive in our town so 6

of Swords and also for the visual benefit of its wonderful friendly residents. Swords Tidy Towns have won numerous awards and plaudits over the past number of years for their efforts both locally and nationally and is a reflection on all the great work our team puts in. The Very Least That You Should Know By Dave Kavanagh During a consultation with new clients recently, I asked if they had serious illness cover in place. They said that they did. When I asked for the details, they were unsure so searched for their policy details. It turned out that they had PPI (Payment Protection Insurance) and misinterpreted the word “illness” somewhere in the description. They did not have serious illness cover. (The PPI “might” have paid out a few hundred euro towards their mortgage payment if the person covered was out of work due to illness or injury and only after a 2 month period and then stopped after 12 months, whereas serious illness cover can pay out a tax free lump sum on diagnosis of one of the conditions covered). It was yet another reminder that most people do not know the important details of plans that they pay regularly for. As people’s circumstances change, it’s important to be up to date with knowing what you are actually paying for. Here is the very least that you should know about any protection plans that you have in place: Life Cover: How much cover is there? When does it expire? Is it dual or joint? Does it have a conversion option? Is it level, increasing or decreasing? How much does it cost? Income Protection: What is the deferred period? (The length of time you have to be off

work due to illness or injury before payments commence). What level of cover do I have? Up to what age will payments continue if I could never return to work again? How much does it cost? Have I claimed my tax relief ? (I.P. premiums are tax deductible). Serious Illness Cover: A.K.A. Critical Illness Cover or Specified Illness Cover. What level of cover do I have? Is it stand alone or accelerated cover? Is it dual or joint? When does it expire? Do I have the option to extend cover without further medical evidence? The Annual Horticultural show takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 1st August in St. Colmcille’s GFC, Glen Ellen Road and will be open for viewing from 2-5pm.There will be Competition Classes in Flowers; Pot Plants; Vegetables & Fruit; Baking; Handcrafts; Flower Arranging; Children under 9 years, under 12 years & under 16 years. Cultural Centre plans go on public display from July 7

Fingal County Council is going out to public consultation next month on its plans for the Swords Cultural Centre which will be a key component of the Swords Cultural Quarter.Councillors were informed recently that a Part 8 planning process will commence on Thursday, July 7 for the new Centre which will be located at the junction of North Street and Seatown Road, beside Swords Castle and County Hall, in the centre of Swords.The new Centre, will be a four-story building covering 5,700 square metres and featuring a new County Library, a tourist office, a gallery and a 165 seat multi-functional theatre.The plans also include a new design of the public realm around Swords Castle and County Hall.The public consultation process will commence on Thursday, July 7 with the plans for the Swords Cultural Centre on public display at County Hall, Swords, and Civic Offices, Blanchardstown, until August 5. They will also be available online at fingal. ie and consult.fingal.ie. Submissions about the proposal will be accepted until August 15 at consult.fingal.ie.The Chief Executive of Fingal County

Council, AnnMarie Farrelly, said: “ We now have a schedule in place which, if all goes well, will see construction commence in the second half of 2023. This project is connected to the Sustainable Swords Strategy and, between them, they will transform the area along Main Street and improve connectivity between the centre and the rest of the town.”The Sustainable Swords Strategy is a key part of Fingal County Council’s plan to ensure that, as Swords continues to expand, the town grows sustainably and develops into well-designed county capital. It will focus on reversing the historic shift away from Main Street, which commenced in the early 2000s, in order to facilitate better placemaking and create a more resilient town centre.Fingal County Council has already completed a Health Check of the works programme, a Public Realm Strategy, a Transport Strategy and a Business Case Evaluation of key transformative projects and will unveil its Sustainable Swords Strategy in September when it is presented for public consultation.

It’s never too late to improve your health

Ciaran Russell There are 6 months gone in 2022, already! I have 6 simple ways for you to get back on track with your health goals and make some progress toward achieving them by the end of this year. My advice here is to implement these over the course of July and not all at once. If you try to go all-in at the start of the month, you may get overwhelmed and give up, leaving you back at the start again.First, start keeping a food diary. Not with the aim of reducing what you’re eating straight away but to create awareness of what food and how much of it you are consuming. Include everything you eat and drink. Then at the 12

end of the first week take some time to read it. Next, increase your water intake. Being hydrated is very important for many bodily functions and will improve your energy levels. Get a water bottle and keep it beside you all the time. Aim for 1 litre of water for every 25kg that you weigh.Then start to walk more. You don’t have to hits 10,000 steps a day but gradually increase your step count from where it is now.Next, start taking a look at your sleep. Aim for at least 7 hours per night. And if you want 7 hours you’ll probably have to give yourself an 8-hour window to get it. Once you’ve implemented these 4 habits, then you can start to look at exercise and protein. Find some sort of exercise you enjoy doing and do it 2-4 times per

week. Whether it’s going to the gym, playing a sport or something else. Do something you find challenging and gets your heart rate up. Protein is generally not eaten enough by most people. Things like greek yoghurt, eggs, lean meat, beans & lentils and fish. If you are over 60, 1.2 grams per kg of body weight would suffice. However, if you are younger and are exercising regularly, especially in the gym you should aim for between 1.6g - 2.2g of protein per kg of bodyweight. My daughters were playing in the sea last year when my youngest stepped in a hole in the sand, and the seawater immediately came up to her neck. We got her out quickly, but it was a stark reminder that the sea is dangerous and unpredictable, so please be careful.On rainy days, there’s lots to do at home. Origami sounds tricky but is quite easy. Our son spent hours doing Origami with his late Nanna, creating treasured memories. You can pick up child friendlyOrigami kits from The Works Stores Ilac SC. Another fun indoor activity is collecting and paintingstones or seashells. It takes hours for the kids to wash, dry and paint the stones/shells and all you need is child friendly paint and lots of newspaper underneath!Decorating their bedroom is a fun project for children. 140g prawns 1 red pepper 5 (closed cup) mushrooms 1/2 cucumber (200g) 3 scallions 6 sun-stream tomatoes 30g pine nuts- toasted 75g mixed leaves (Spinach, Wild rocket, Red chard, Ruby Chard) • Optional could add: red onion, beetroot • Dressing of your choice or mix 14 SWORDS LOCAL-JULY 2022

Method 1.Prepare and chop the salad ingredients and make the dressing as directed above. 2.Cook prawns as per instructions on food label. 3.Marinate prawns in the salad dressing as you assemble the other chopped salad

Over 30 years since it was originally made, Martin Scorsese kicked off the ‘90s by making arguably his third masterpiece. I write about ‘Goodfellas’ following the sad passing of Ray Liotta who shone like a diamond in the movie, screened recently at the Lighthouse Cinema. Liotta’s impeccable performance as Henry Hill will forever be remembered as one of the great gangster performances in cinema history. ‘Goodfellas’, an adaptation of the book ‘Wiseguy’, written by Nicholas Pileggi, is a fast-paced crime drama about a gangster lifestyle we don’t ever see but only hear about. It is gripping from start to finish. Even the opening titles, moving fast from one side of the screen to the other, are dubbed with the sound of cars racing by, symbolising how relentless the gangster lifestyle truly is. ‘Goodfellas’ is so fast paced we see nine freeze frames throughout, highlighting important moments, and slowing the film down to give the audience a chance to catch its breath. Thelma Schoonmaker’s editing is utterly brilliant with match cuts used from scene to scene to keep the momentum going.We also see 204 tracking shots which are used to take us through entire buildings instead of shooting a scene in just one room. One example is the famous date scene where Henry takes Karen through the restaurant kitchen to skip the long queue outside. ‘Goodfellas’ is one of my favourite Scorsese movies. Even if you watch the opening ten minutes, you’ll end up watching the entire film. It flies by so fast, like life itself. Throughout we feel many different emotions, from the highs to the lows, and these characters are just people passing through life before it’s all over in an instant. I’ll give ‘Goodfellas’ a score of five stars. You can watch ‘Goodfellas’ on sky cinema or buy it at Tower Records €7.99. Swords Karate Club -New members welcome!

Congratulations to Mark Girvin who was presented with his Nidan Diploma 2nd Dan Black Belt recently. Mark is a founding member of Swords Karate Club and has trained regularly since he joined back in 2001. For his Nidan examination Mark had to demonstrate a range of Kumite techniques as well as performing several Kata. He had several Kumite fights against opponents where he put his nidan techniques to good use. He was presented with his Diploma by Dermot O Keeffe Sensei 6th Dan JKS, Chief Instructor of JKS Karate in Ireland. We surprised Sensei Ali at the Spring Seminar with a birthday cake and a rendition of Happy Birthday to celebrate her 21st Birthday which was on the 16

same day. She was shocked but delighted at the surprise and promised not to eat all her cake herself ! Sensei Ali teaches our Tigers classes. We welcomed Makita Sensei 6th Dan JKS from Japan for day 1 of our Spring Seminar. Over 70 people from all over Ireland took part as Makita Sensei led the students through several rounds of Japanese style training. He demonstrated dynamic contraction and expansion in techniques followed by teaching of Kashu Kata. The seminar was held in Applewood Community Centre. We hosted Jesper Sensei, 7th Dan JKS on day 2 of our Spring Seminar. He spent his time teaching the intricacies of Kaishu Ippon Kumite with a partner and all the students enjoyed his teaching

immensely. Class reports: Tigers and Juniors are preparing for the upcoming JKS Inter-Club Competition as well as for grading examinations. The Competition is being hosted by JKS Swords and gives students an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned in class in a supportive competition environment. Seniors continue to work on developing real world skills from karate techniques. We take new members (Children, Young People & Adults) all through the year. This week’s instalment comes from the Irish Daily Independent dated 20th July 1894. Fins travelled to Rush to play local team Emerald Isles. At this time a goal was equivalent to 5 points hence the line “...winners by 2 goals and 10 points (equal to 4 goals)...” It is interesting how the rules evolve through time. At this time Gaelic football was played 17-a-side and the goals were similar to soccer goals. There were also two outer posts.
