Is it time to get involved in your community? At this time of the year we love to get out and about. We visit beaches, drive around beauty spots and have picnics as the good weather brightens our days. This is a time to enjoy with our families and friends whether it is in this country or abroad. However after the holidays, long weekends, city breaks or whatever are over, we will have to return to the reality of everyday living in this community. We are known throughout the world for our generosity of spirit and our kindness and caring philosophy on life. However every year brings its new challenges and this Summer and Winter will be no exception. We are now in an era where the community and voluntary sector will be called upon more and more and we will be called upon to support such organisations. Whenever anyone says such things we generally think of giving what we can to a worthy cause but what about joining the hundreds of volunteers who give so generously of their time to help others? What about helping to care for those less fortunate than ourselves, those who for one reason or another cannot help theselves? We are a community based magazine group who have been publishing magazines across Fingal in Balbriggan, Lusk, Swords, Malahide and Donabate/Portrane for many years. During that period we have had close contact with hundreds of Community and Voluntary groups Charitable and Sporting organisations from all these areas. Some of us have worked in community based organisations and that is why we appreciate the efforts of those involved. Those who give up their time for no gain to feed the hungry, or care for those who are mentally or physically disabled or spend time coaching a sport they enjoy? Those people get a satisfaction and peace of mind that feels like nothing else they will ever be involved in. It is not about their ego. Instead it is about giving of themselves in order to help others without looking for praise or reward. So as your holidays this summer draw to a close why not review how you use your spare time and maybe it will be time for you too to get involved in your community. In the meantime enjoy the month of June and your hols!

St. Colmcille’s Girls’ School won The Snack Box Challenge!

The Senior Infants of St Colmcille’s Girls’ National School Swords beat off stiff competition to win Woodie’s Budding Gardener prize of a bespoke gardening workshop with judge Brian Burke Woodie’s DIY, Home and Garden launched their Budding Gardeners competition in January to encourage children and families to celebrate the joy of gardening, cultivating a hobby that will stay with them for life. Woodie’s asked children to flex their green fingers and

get planting by working on a garden patch at school or at home for their chance to win some fantastic prizes.Hundreds of children got involved and spent time in their gardens working on the three tasks designed by Judge Brian over three months. The Senior Infants of St Colmcille’s Girls’ National School have been announced as winners of the Snack Box Challenge. The task involved sowing lettuce seeds in planting boxes, nurturing and caring for them until grew into

salad leaves, something simple for the children to grow themselves and eat for their lunch. The project integrated both science and SPHE with the class discussing healthy eating whilst enjoying their new hobby. The class have won a gardening workshop with Woodie’s Budding Gardeners Judge Brian Burke, who will be visiting the class in June. Day For Night stands test of time!

By Jack Shanley Almost 50 years after it was made, ‘Day For Night’ truly stands the test of time. Screened last month at the Irish Film Institute (IFI), the classic, directed by the great French new wave director Francoise Truffaut, is one of his finest achievements.It tells the story of a committed film director struggling to finish his movie with several unexpected troubles, both personal and professional, affecting the cast and crew.It’s an entertaining romance drama about the struggle, the love and passion of the amazing craft we call filmmaking. Truffaut asks the powerful question: ‘Is cinema more important than life?’ ‘Day For Night’ is essentially about making movies with a romance story built within it, but more than that, it’s a love letter to cinema, a craft in which Truffaut devoted his life to. He once said ‘it was his own reason for living’. It’s an affectionate film with Truffaut starring as an ambitious director committed to his craft. Quite funny and charming, it takes you into the strenuous world and selfish mind of a film director. American film director Brian De Palma, a great admirer of Truffaut, was so influenced by the opening titles, designed by Michel Francois, that he used a very similar opening title for his film ‘Blow Out’ released in 1981, replacing the orchestra with screams and a beating heart. ‘Day For Night’ also has a remarkable soundtrack, scored by the effortlessly talented Georges Delerue who, through his music, gave the film this wonderful sense of hope which is essentially all that a film director really has. Overall, ‘Day For Night’ is a beautifully crafted depiction of what a film director truly is. I give it a score of four stars as it makes you adore cinema just that little bit more. Established by local fisherman Sean Doran, whose family have been in the fish business in Howth for 60 years, this new marine focused excursion is sure to delight family members of all ages. This fun educational experience consists of talks on fishing vessels, how they fish and what species they catch in Irish coastal waters. Swords Tidy Towns striving for the Gold award

Swords Tidy Towns has been very busy readying our town for the visit of the judges for this years National Tidy Towns Competition. Judging is done between June and July and hundreds of other Tidy Towns groups across the country will also be doing the same.There is only so much our hardworking volunteers can do to impress the judges, there is also an onus on Swords residents to play their part by supporting us. You can this by always binning your litter, disposing responsibly of your dog poo, encouraging and complimenting young kids when they follow your example. When you see our volunteers out and about honk your horn if driving or express a few kind words if passing. The hard work of our Tidy Towners has been justly rewarded by winning a National Silver Medal four times in a row. With your help we hope to make that five this year, who knows, maybe we could even win the Gold Medal, we can but dream

Consultation responses closed on Swords cycle lanes Fingal County Council has concluded

public consultation on proposed protected

cycle lane upgrades for St Cronan’s Avenue

and Brackenstown Road in Swords. Interested individuals and businesses in the area were invited to respond to plans for cycle lane

upgrades, through an online portal or by post,

from 25 March to 29 April. The consultation was promoted to those living in the locality through a leaflet drop, letters to local businesses, social

media posts and an online information session which took place on 12 April. Fingal County

Council also met with key stakeholders including Brackenstown Parish, Dublin Bus, Swords

Express, St Cronan’s Junior and Senior National Schools, ESB Networks and local business

owners before and during the public consultation period. 31 submissions were received in the

course of the 5-week consultation period. All

submissions received by Fingal County Council

are being read and considered by the Department of Environment, Climate Action and Active

Travel and by their design consultants prior to commencement of work on site. The Project

The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival – Dates for your Diary!

The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival was last held in 2019. Covid restrictions meant that it could not be held in 2020 or 2021. BUT we are delighted to say that we are working on Festival 2022. The Festival will be launched in The Brook, Portrane on Thursday 8th. September and finish on Sunday 18th September.Festival favourites are back on the programme.The Dublin String Quartet is performing in our Gala Concert and they will be supported by The Blanchardstown

Brass Band, Skerries Strummers and David Scott. Films for the 3 Day Short Film Festival are being sourced by Emma Fagan from Fillum.We have workshops for adults and for children, tours of Portrane Martello Tower, St. Patrick’s Church of Ireland and Newbridge House, Biodiversity Walk and Talk led by Hans Visser, biodiversity officer with Fingal Co. Co. Family events - “Go Fly Your Kite” and walking treasure hunt. Health and Well Being workshops in The Community

Well and Tai Chi on Portrane Green.These are just SOME of the events.We will be back with a more comprehensive list next month.We have 2 fundraising events during the summer – A Quiz and a Raffle and we ask you to support these. The Ned and Máire Maguire Perpetual Trophy We would like to congratulate Tommy

years Ned and Máire Maguire Perpetual Trophy. Back in 1986 our Guide Dogs branch formed and began fundraising. One of our biggest fundraisers was a

sponsored walk in the late 80’s to 90’s

and one couple who did the walk every

single year was Ned and Máire Maguire

from Delahasey just outside Balbriggan. The couple would go door to door with their sponsor card and inform people

of what a guide dog was and what they did. This was long before we could

spread the word with a simple text via mobile phone or by sharing a post on

social media. They were doing the work

that social media does today and getting the word out there. So, when Ned and later Máire passed away, a trophy was

they gave to our branch. The trophy

is given annually to someone or some

business that does something that stands out in the past year to help our branch. This year we were delighted to award it to Tommy Murray who joined our branch in the late 80’s and has given

over 30 years of service to us, including but not limited to, helping at dog

walks, emptying counter boxes, church gates, selling Christmas cards and

calendars to name a few. We extend our congratulations to Tommy and thank

him for all he has done for our branch.

Groups like St Maur’s Pipe Band to receive much needed funding

Fingal’s Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) has approved over €300,000 in grant funding to community and voluntary groups across the county under the 2022 Community Activities Fund (CAF). Funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development, the 2022 scheme was launched nationally by the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, and the Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities, Joe O’Brien TD.Over 200 grants will be paid to groups across Fingal under the scheme. This will help with running costs such as utility bills, insurance and in some cases rental or leasing

costs. They will also be supported with funding to carry out necessary repairs and improvements to their facilities, and the purchase of equipment such as defibrillators, furniture, tools. signage, laptops, printers, lawnmowers, canopies, among others. The Community Activities Fund provides a flexible and targeted approach to funding those communities most in need. The fund is aimed at addressing disadvantage, as identified in the Fingal Local Economic and Community Plan and also at this time supports local community and voluntary groups with reopening costs resulting from COVID-19. Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Seána Ó Rodaigh, welcomed the large number of grants approved, saying: “The Community

Activities Fund provides invaluable support to a broad range of organisations, particularly at a time when operating costs for many groups are rising sharply. The amount of funding made available reflects the vital role played by those groups making a real impact on the ground right across Fingal, be it community centres, Scouts and Guides, childcare providers, sports clubs, support services for older people or drama societies.” Mary Harford, Group Leader of the 89th Bremore Scout Group said: “The grants will enable us to buy much needed equipment for our young people and will also help us cover our operating costs for the year without worrying where the money will come from.”

Swords Karate Club News

Congratulations are in order for Swords local Szymon Kupiec on the award of his JKS Shodan Diploma recently. He was presented with his Diploma by the head of JKS Ireland Dermot O Keeffe Sensei 6th Dan in front of JKS Ireland Brown & Black Belts at this month’s National training session. Szymon took his Black Belt examination in December 2021 after 10 years of training. He had to complete a series of Kihon (Basics), followed by several Kumite (Fighting) matches with other examinees. He finished the examination by performing his Katas (Forms) Bassai Dai, Junro Nidan and Heian Godan. Szymon is continuing his training and working towards his 2nd Dan Black Belt. We hosted JKS Ireland National Brown & Black Belt training this month. We covered our grading syllabi for 1st and 2nd Dan Black Belt and then studied the Kata Unsu. This is an ancient kata with a lot of complex and demanding moves. The name Unsu translates from Japanese to English as Cloud

Hands and explains some of the stranger hand movements of this Kata.We welcomed Makita Sensei 6th Dan JKS Honbu Dojo Instructor from Japan and Jesper Marksvarden Sensei 7th Dan JKS from Denmark for our Spring/ Summer Seminar in mid-May. This is the first time since the pandemic began that we have had visiting Instructors and it promises to be a very exciting Seminar over two days. Full report in the next Club News. Class reports: Tigers and Juniors are on course for the summer grading examinations. Everyone is working hard learning their Kata and practicing their Kihon.
