We are so thankful we seem to be beginning to enjoy life again. What a wonderful proper St Patrick’s Day we had for the first time in two years. Children and community groups and clubs right across Fingal put on fantasic parades of floats in their areas. . Bands from all over Fingal and the country entertained us and even the weather stayed good as we were rewarded with the smiles of the children dressed appropriately for the day. No other place in the world celebrates their patron saint’s day like we do, with the marching bands, the sea of green, the music, and the joy of the spectacular parades which are the envy of the world. However there has been a rise in the Covid admissions to hospital recently and we have to realise we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of variants of Covid 19 nationwide if we don’t continue to take care. Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public places, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past two years. We should remember the local shops and enterprises who went above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly during the lockdown and now it is time to give something back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print over the past few months. Lets shop local, support our carers and HSE frontline staff and all stay safe, enjoy our Easter eggs, and keep smiling !

Swords Tidy Towns already planning for summertime!

As we approach the more clement weather, Swords Tidy Towns are busy preparing for a very busy few months ahead. Plans are already afoot to bring a variety of colour to our beautiful town centre, our members forward planning has always been the key to our success with planting projects. Our executive committee have been meeting regularly via Zoom to plan our strategy for this year and beyond. The contributions of the committee and Swords Tidy Towns members has been invaluable over many years in getting Swords Town and Swords Tidy Towns to where they are today. We have reached out and worked with many other groups in our town to further our commitment to community involvement. The groups we now work with are Swords Woodland Ass, Mens Shed, Peter McVerry Trust, St Michaels House, 4

The National Learning Network, Prosper Fingal, Anew, Youthreach, Crosscare, (FEN) Fingal Ethnic Network. We have also linked up on various projects with local schools, such as Colaiste Choilm, St Finians, Fingal Community College, Swords Community College, Holywell Educate Together, St Colmcilles, Loreto College. We will continue to work with those listed and hopefully add more to that list over the coming years, in our effort to improve Swords Tidy Towns community involvement and assess what its future needs might be. We are blessed to live in such a wonderful community with such generous and friendly people. Ukrainian flag raised at County Hall Swords

In a gesture of solidarity with the people and the country of Ukraine, the Ukrainian national flag was raised recently at County Hall, Swords, by the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Seána O Rodaigh, in the presence of the Ukrainian ambassador to Ireland, Her Excellency Ms Larysa Gerasko.The ceremony was also attended by members of the Ukrainian community in Fingal who had earlier been hosted by the Mayor at a special reception in The Atrium at County Hall. Fingal councillors and Oireachtas members stood in solidarity with them as the flag of Ukraine was raised and the Ukrainian national anthem was sung by those present.The Mayor expressed her solidarity with the Ukrainian community and spoke of those she met earlier, saying: “Many relationships have been fostered today and many of us listened and we will continue to do so.” Ambassador Gerasko thanked the Mayor for inviting her to the ceremony and added: “Ukrainians are facing a dark and terrible time, parts of country are destroyed including hundreds of schools and hospitals in this unjustified and terrible war. We need your support and we are grateful to the Government of Ireland for their huge support and solidarity and to the Irish nation for the many messages of support and offers of accommodation and humanitarian aid.” There was a discussion on the situation in Ukraine at the March monthly meeting of the Council before motions relating to the Russian invasion were unanimously 6

passed. These motions were:“That this Council unreservedly condemns, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s totally unprovoked and despicable attack on the free and sovereign nation of Ukraine and call on Russia to immediately withdraw and make reparations.” – proposed by Councillors Darragh Butler, Brigid Manton, Tom Kitt, Tony Murphy, Brian Dennehy, Joe Newman, Robert O’Donoghue, Grainne Maguire, Howard Mahony, Pamela Conroy, Daniel Whooley, JK Onwumereh, Ian Carey and Tania Doyle. “That Fingal County Council calls on the Government to ensure sanctions are imposed to end Russian aggression against the Ukraine and that this Council calls for the expulsion of the Russian Ambassador. The Irish Government needs to play its part in forcing a complete withdrawal of Russian military forces from Ukraine. Fingal County Council stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine” – proposed by Councillor Anne Graves. “That this Council condemns the use of violence to achieve political aims, calls on Russia to withdraw from all Ukrainian territory and make full reparation to Ukraine.” – proposed by Councillors Tom O’Leary, Anthony Lavin, Aoibhinn Tormey, Siobhan Shovlin, Punam Rane and Ted Leddy.The Ukrainian flag was also raised at the Council’s offices in Blanchardstown which were lit up in yellow and blue along with Swords Castle in solidary with Ukraine and its people.

Why don’t we consider the bad stuff? By Dave Kavanagh It’s human nature to want good things to happen to us and conversely, for bad things not to happen to us. A constant example I see of this, is the vast amounts of money that is spent on the lotto every week, despite the odds of winning the jackpot of 10.7million to 1, compared to the numerous people I talk to that have no preparations in place, for the potential financial loss in the event of a serious illness or even a fatality. Considering that in Ireland, you have a 1 in 4 chance of developing one of the conditions covered before age 65, and, according to one of the main life companies’ claim statistics for 2021, 32% of their death claims were under age 60. The difference between how people affected by such occurrences will be impacted financially, is usually dependent on how people have planned and prepared. Of course we don’t want bad suff to happen, but it happens frequently whether we want it to or not. (Exponentially more frequently than the aforementioned lotto jackpot wins!) Whenever I talk to people who have just reviewed their own individual circumstances and put appropriate plans in place, they talk about the “peace of mind” that this gives them and the fact that it is one less thing to worry about now that they are up to date with the knowledge that sufficient cover is now in place to prevent any

major financial loss, should one of those “bad things” happen. It requires a conscious act of making the time to look at your own situation and finding out the levels and types of cover that are suitable and affordable for you. A simple phone call or email may be all you need to get started and having one less thing for you to worry about.

Fingal winners at Dublin Scór Finals recently

By Liam Ó Culbáird A great day was had at the of Scór na nÓg Dublin County final which was held at Fingallians GAA in Swords on 13th March 2022. It was encouraging to see new clubs from across Dublin participating that had no previous experience of the Scór competitions. Dublin GAA will be well represented as we head towards the Leinster finals. The Scór competitions are talent competitions for GAA members that include areas of Irish culture outside of our national ball games. Bhí

Fingal’s Newest Leaders at She Leads Fingal Ceremony

A new network of leaders were presented with Certificates of Achievement at the She Leads Fingal Awards recently by AnnMarie Farrelly, Fingal County Council Chief Executive and Cllr Karen Power, Chairperson of Fingal County Council Women’s Caucus.The Awards Ceremony was held at Fingal County Council, County Hall, Main Street, Swords.The programme explored the achievements, challenges and opportunities that women experience in community action. Selected participants - all women in Fingal involved in their local communities - were supported to discover the leadership skills, resources and approaches already successfully used in Fingal. Certificates were awarded to Helen Galgey, Michelle Griffin, Sandra Losty, Carmelle Keane, Ginta Bezdeliga, Hanan Kaaoiss, Akvile Simanskiene and Alison Herlihy. Participants are interested in a wide variety of areas for community change. Sandra Losty is the founder of Recovery Hour, an online selfhelp community founded during the Covid-19 restrictions to aid people in recovery from addiction. Akvile Simanskiene is a Balbriggan artist creating murals with the community in public spaces. Helen Galgey is 10

a coach and committee member at Baldoyle FC. Alison Herlihy leads a team supporting youth representation at Donabate Portrane Tennis Club. Carmelle Keane leads a mentoring programme for women in local radio at Phoenix FM.A networking event held at the end of the programme saw guests with national influence meet with participants to provide opportunities for mentoring and connection with national and regional networks. Guests included the Mayor of Fingal Seána Ó Rodaigh, Louise O’Reilly TD, National Women’s Council of Ireland, Sport Ireland, and Empower as well as influencers in the worlds of food, film, arts and wellbeing. She Leads Fingal was co-designed with Shelly Gaynor, a disability advisor and former Chair of the Independent Living Movement Ireland, Bridie O’Reilly, an experienced community activist and former Chair of the Older People’s Council of Ireland, and Dr Lucy Michael, an experienced lecturer in community leadership. She Leads Fingal is supported by the Community Development Office of Fingal County Council. A new one-day leadership programme for Fingal women is currently being planned.

Style Warriors Fashion now at Ardgillan Castle

By Fashion Editor Carina Cunningham Well, she’s back again after the two-year restrictions! Carina Cunningham of Style Warriors Fashion and Entertainment Show has a new venture. Carina is now assisting new and older modelling enthusiasts, who are looking to explore the fashion world. From vintage to movie star, burlesque to lingerie, debs’ dresses to communion, period to gothic, wedding to evening wear – she has it all. Carina has an extensive wardrobe collection available for photo shoots and for hire. She has been creating period costumes and hats in Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan in her new studio: Style Warriors Dreamscape Room 102. She shares the beautiful surroundings of the castle with fellow artists, who also display their

skills in their own studios at the castle. Studios for visual artists, potters, ceramicists and jewellers have been open since June of last year where the artists and crafters freely meet and greet both the public and tourists seven days a week. This venture came to life with Argillan Castle Manager Tom Reilly’s vision and the support of Fingal County Council and the Ardgillan Castle Board of Management. On the 15th of May, Ardgillan Castle will be hosting a wedding fair and Carina will be looking for models to join the team for a fashion show on the day and learn a little about what it’s like being a model. There will be a model casting day held in the castle, a bootcamp day and then the fashion show on the

day of the wedding fair. Anyone who is interested – please contact Carina on her Facebook page. Stands of local wedding suppliers will also feature on the day. The castle itself is a venue for civil ceremonies. And now brides can avail of the in-house vintage wedding décor that is available to couples planning their weddings at Ardgillan. Mags Morgan with her divine Mizz Rio wedding collections will share the catwalk with Carina at the fair.Casting day and bootcamp dates will be announced shortly. On the wedding fair day, 24 models’ names will go into a hat with the winner getting a free photoshoot from Carina!

Easter Egg Hunt and a Salt Cave!

It doesn’t have to be EGGstravagant but with a little effort, you can make it really fun!We like to create riddles for our children to solve, to find the eggs and treats we have dotted around the house and garden. And if it rains, don’t worry because you can do it all indoors! All you need is chocolate and imagination! Here are a few ideas for riddles and hiding places:• In the place you sit down, look for chocolate upside down (under the sofa!) • Where you lay your sleepy head, find a yummy treat instead (inside their pillowcases) • Inside the pots and pans, rummage around with your hands (choc eggs in pots/pans)

• Where we block the daylight out, is a treat for you to scout (behind the curtains) • School is out for 2 whole weeks but check your schoolbag for scrummy treats • Where dirty clothes are made clean, look near the washing machine! (laundry basket)Dealz have easter eggs from €1.50, ideal for egg hunts. They also have Easter decorations to pop up around the house. Dunnes Stores have fab Easter decorations too, such as pastel coloured wreaths. The Works stores have ‘Colour your own’ Easter egg hunt bags and Easter eggs kits, which are ideal for rainy days for keeping kids busy whilst using their imagination. Dealz, The Works and Dunnes are all in Ilac SC if you fancy a trip to get ‘Easter’ ready! As we are still dealing with Covid, we may not be able to get together with family this year. Our daughter is asthmatic,and we take her there to inhale the salt in the air. It is so good for clearing out her sinuses. It’s helpful for anyone who has sinus issues or is getting over a cold. There are toys for the children to play with and massage chairs for the adults to lay back in and relax.
