Our Team

Lets stay safe and enjoy our lives this Valentine’s Day

Local News

Over the past 2 years we have come through a lot. We have come through and are going through lockdowns and curfews. We have been asked to isolate if we have been in touch with our family and friends who have tested positive and we have been told we must ‘elbow greet’ instead of hug those we love and meet. However all of these restrictions have been imposed in a loving way by our Government to try and keep us safe and healthy. It has also been recommended by Health experts that we have no less than three vaccinations to date. This has all been proposed to try and keep our loved ones safe and healthy and to try and safeguard our elderly and our future generations. This Valentine’s Day will be yet another one unlike others we had gotten used to, whether we are teenage lovers or more mature partners. However that does not mean that we cannot show love to those who mean the most to us. Remember. chocolate shops, florists and restaurants and hotels are all open (at the time of going to press) Unlike any other period in history we have the means to stay in touch and communicate without meeting in person, whether that be through a mobile phone call or Facetime or Zoom or whatever technology we have at hand. The worldwide communications structure is so vast now that we need never feel alone and can send messages of love and support to those we care most about. We should also all shop locally and ensure the local jobs of our neighbours and friends. We all know the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keeping our distance when meeting others. Community transfer of the Omicron variant of the virus seems to be the problem so lets not go back to meeting numbers of people and lets be careful and safe. Simply put, we all want this to decrease again as soon as possible. We all want to reduce the number of people in hospital and worse, so lets all pull together once again as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as soon as possible and stay safe and enjoy our lives while being responsible. So please, obey the rules, stay safe, lets pull together and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all our families and those we love.

Fingal Community Groups invited to apply for Community Activities Funding

Community and voluntary groups in Fingal are invited to apply for funding under the 2022 Community Activities Fund. The Community Activities Fund (CAF) is a once-off fund that provides grants to assist community and voluntary groups with facilities upgrades, equipment purchase and running costs. The CAF is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development with Fingal allocated €301,042 in funding for groups across the county. The CAF is administered by Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs) in each Local Authority area. It is part of the wider Community Enhancement Programme, which has funded over 8,000 projects in urban and rural communities throughout Ireland since first being launched in 2018. Applications are now being sought from community and voluntary groups in Fingal for grants up to a maximum of €15,000 with a closing date for applications of Friday, February 18, 2022 at 6:00 pm. Commenting on the announcement, AnnMarie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council said: “The work of the community and

voluntary sector is highly valued by Fingal County Council. The Community Activities Fund will assist community groups with the valuable work they do within our communities. I would advise community groups to examine the CAF and avail of the opportunity to apply for funding if it is relevant to their activities.” Declan Ryan, Chief Officer of the Fingal Local Community Development Committee added: “The Community Activities Fund comes from within the Community Enhancement Programme group of funds. These funds have been availed of widely by community groups in Fingal in recent years, which has resulted in valuable funding being distributed to groups in disadvantaged areas in particular. The new CAF has the added benefit of allowing applications for both capital costs and operating costs. This added flexibility is very welcome. The Fingal LCDC looks forward to supporting the delivery of this scheme.” Full details on the 2022 Community Activities Fund and how to apply online can be accessed at submit.link/Ch.

Swords Tidy Towns needs your co-operation this year!

As we enter 2022 the hard working team of Swords Tidy Towns will carry on doing what they do best, keeping our town looking the best it can, and that is no easy task mind you. Unfortunately, there are individuals who continue on a daily basis to litter and deface our beautiful town with a total disregard for others. These are the mask discarders who litter the length and breadth of Swords, the litterers who daily throw their rubbish onto our streets, there is no excuse for this, bin it, or take it home. Irresponsible dog owners, who don’t clean up after their pets with total disregard for people’s health and safety. Then there are those dog owners who bag their pet’s poo and throw it into the nearest bush or worse hang it on whatever is nearest to them. What is 6

SWORDS LOCAL-FEBRUARY 2022

the point in you doing this guys it is a disgusting and unsightly habit. If there is no bin nearby, again please take your dog poo to the nearest bin or take it home with you, your dog’s poo is your responsibility nobody else’s. When pet owners take responsibility as do the vast majority of them, it benefits the whole community and makes our work that much easier. We would ask local Residents Associations to consider adopting a patch in their area and plant it up with species that are wild life friendly. We would be happy to advise any Residents Association wishing to do so, just email us at swordstidytowns@gmail. com.Swords Tidy Towns has been successful in the last four National Tidy Towns competitions winning a silver medal on each occasion, we are

in the large urban area category. This is testament to all the hard work and dedication that has been put in over many years by the group. This success didn’t happen overnight, it has been a long slog since being designated a litter black spot in 2004, coming in bottom of the table in that years IBAL report. If you see our members when you are out and about say hello, they enjoy a chat, it’s nice to know that people notice and appreciate their hard work.We have many outstanding projects in the pipeline for completion this year, hopefully we will get them finished. We are always looking for new volunteers to help in our efforts, hopefully one day we will win that elusive gold medal, we think Swords deserves one don’t you. Six Simple Ways To Get A Handle On Your Snacking Ciaran Russell What is a Snaccident. (pr: Snax-eh-dent). It is when food (a snack) is consumed in an accidental, often regrettable way. This can refer to accidentally eating food of questionable quality and/or quantity. Snacking can be an issue for a lot of people when it comes to trying to reach any health, weight loss or fitness goals. Here six ways to take control of your snacking habits. (1.) Controlling your food environment. The problem here is you may be surrounding yourself with the temptation that’s increasing the chance you’ll give in to those cravings. Put physical barriers between you and the food, in other words make it harder to get to. Move them from one press to another to interrupt the pattern. Or don’t buy them in the first place. Making it more difficult, you’re more likely to give up on it. (2.) Pick foods that fill you up. There’s nothing wrong with eating food that doesn’t fill you, but you’ll be back an hour later for more. Increase your protein intake, think meat, dairy, eggs, cheese, yogurt, shakes. Opt for more water-rich foods, such as potatoes, beans and fruit. Foods high on the satiety index will keep you fuller for longer. Remember carbs are not the enemy, they’re a fantastic source of energy and fibre. (3.) Beware of food that tastes amazing! Your body want energy, this energy comes from the food and drink you consume. It particularly wants food with a mix of protein, carbs, fats and salt. Eating foods containing high amounts of these and you will crave more. The solution? Don’t restrict any food from your diet, simply reduce the frequency you have them. (4.) Sort out your sleep. Maybe you’re not sleeping enough or the quality of your sleep is poor, or maybe both. This leads to you feeling tired and cranky, craving quick energy. This means you make poor food choices. What you can do is aim to get to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Your body clock doesn’t know it’s the weekend! Keep your bedroom

dark and cool to improve the chances of staying asleep. Reduce your screen time an hour before bed to allow your brain to wind down. (5). Make sure you’re active every day. Part of the problem is that you’re not exercise enough and that you lead a sedentary lifestyle. Which means you’re not burning many calories during the day. Aim for 8000+ steps per day, resistance training is a great way to keep active, find something you enjoy doing and do it often. (6.) Reduce your stress levels. The problem is you’re busy at work

or at home and feel like you’ve loads to do. All these stresses pile up and contribute to you eating emotionally to feel better. Tackle the root cause to reduce your overeating, the stress. Allocate time in the day just for you, to read or go for a walk. Try some meditation, headspace is a great app to use. Look back at tips 1-5 to help reduce your stress too. Improve your health, improve your wealth! By Dave Kavanagh Another start of a year and despite Covid 19 still present, many people will still be intent on embarking on making some positive changes or improvements in their lives. The most recognisable of these is the ‘losing weight” one. It’s worth noting that if done properly, losing weight can have the added bonus of leaving you with more money at the end of each month. So how does that work? Well, by “doing it properly” I refer to NOT going on a diet, or buying products with magic properties that will make the weight just fall off. Instead, making small, sustainable lifestyle changes. It can be adding some exercise in week 1, drinking more water (and less alcohol/ sugar laden drinks) in week 2, reducing portion sizes in week 3, substituting things like chips for wholegrain rice or pasta in week 4, breaking the association of biscuits/cakes whenever you have a coffee or tea in week 5, etc., etc. Doing it this way, makes it sustainable and when weight is dropped slower over a longer period of time, it is far more likely to be kept off. So how does that improve your wealth? When I analyse people’s spending budgets, it’s clear that takeaways, alcohol, sweets, cakes biscuits etc., pop up quite frequently. If you keep track of the savings when you cut down on many of these things, it’s easy to see how much you can save. Keeping a detailed spending budget

where you log every day what you spend (not just the name of the shop, but the actual items) Lets you look back and accurately see what you have spent on the things you actually want to cut down on (one person told me “I can’t believe I ate 38 packets of crisps last month!!”) As for the xmas leftover junk, it can either go in the waste or on your waist. Make the right choices, one day at a time, and you bank account will thank you.

Dave Kavanagh QFA has been advising people financially for over 25 years. For quotes or information (with no cost or obligation) he can be contacted by emailing info@financialcompanion.ie or use the contact form on www.financialcompanion. ie or phone 087-6414570, or @Davekav_ advice on Twitter and Instagram. Combined with his previous role of gym/ nutrition adviser, he regularly gives talks and workshops at seminars and events for groups, companies and government departments on financial wellbeing, positivity and motivation. Have a great Valentines Day!

By Siobhan O’Neill White Valentine’s day is on February 14th and while many of us are still having a tough time with Covid, we reckon a dose of Cupid is just what we need right now. Whether you are part of a couple or not, why not use the excuse of Valentine’s to do something nice for someone you love or even just for you!If you are going out to dinner, get your hair done or treat yourself to a new perfume or lipstick. Lancome has a gorgeous heart shaped red lipstick called Love Bluff, just in time for February 14th Staying in by yourself ? Order your favourite take away, get into your jammies and settle down in front of the TV. If you like a dark comedy, Deadly Cuts on Netflix is a fabulous Irish movie that will have you howling with laughter. Want to make it a romantic night in for two? Decide on something fancy to cook. My husband made me beef wellington recently, so I laid out candles, a tablecloth and some lovely Italian wine to make it a romantic dinner – even if it was just in our kitchen! It’s about setting the scene to make it special. If you would like to include your children in your Valentine’s plans, why not get them to help cook dinner? Our children love to make homemade pizza! We set out Contact us: communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

all the ingredients on the kitchen counter, pull up chairs for the kids and they climb up to put their own toppings on top. They feel so included and it encourages them to eat all their dinner! For dessert we make up knickerbocker glory ice-creams. Layer ice-cream and fruit in a fancy glass, add a dash of Coca-cola, and top with a dollop of cream and crushed flake. Enjoy dessert while watching gorgeous new Disney movie Encanto! Bellissimo! Want to buy a personalised gift for someone special? Lanai-Blo hairdryers can be personalised and they come in 10 colours. Noted Ireland makes gorgeous jewellery boxes, cooking sets and Galentine’s gifts too. Gift vouchers are a great gift idea. Four Seasons Hotel Monaghan has a lovely spa and afternoon tea packages. And one of the best vouchers you can get anyone is for Penney’s! It’s always a treat to head there for some shopping! Valentine’s Day Romantic Rawlos Try these for a tasty, romantic Valentine’s day or an any day treat. Blitzing up dates in a little bit of water turns them into a melt in the mouth healthier caramel!!! Add nut butter and you’re packing in protein and healthy fats (which we need in small amounts!) Smoother them in dark chocolate and you’re reaping all those beautiful cocoa benefits!! The great thing is even though they are so delicious, they are very filling so you won’t scoff them down as you might do with a normal pack of Rolo’s.Plus they are SOOO simples to make!

Ingredients

(Makes 12 ‘Rawlos’) • 60g Dates in 1-2 tablespoons water • 140g Almond butter (or a nut/seed butter of your choice!) • 50g Dark chocolate (AT least 70% cocoa)

Method 1. Having soaked the dates in a small amount of water overnight, mash them up. If they don’t mash up easily, heat them gently in the microwave/hob. 2.Add the nut/seed butter to the mashed dates and mix well. 3. Roll into balls and freeze for 1 hour.

4.Melt dark chocolate. Coat the balls in the dark chocolate and freeze for 20minutes. See how long they can last melting in your mouth without you gobbling up their gooey centre and crisp chocolate shell!!!!
