Lets stand together and shop local !

With lots of the restrictions regarding Covid 19 now reviewed and relaxed, we at Locals Magazine are like you, hoping we are beginning to see a new dawn for us all. However we are not out of the woods yet. Our Government has emphasised that there is a very real possibility of a resurgence of Covid 19 nationally. Therefore we must continue to practise constant handwashing, using the hand sanitiser, wearing masks in public, and practising social distancing in order to keep ourselves and others safe. We need to unite further as a community and support those who have supported us over the past few months. This means shopping locally so that our local businness need not only survive but our local employment is secured. Many of us can recall local shops and enterprises going above and beyond their remit to help all of us especially those with health problems and the elderly and now it time to give back and support those same outlets. We at Local magazines really value the essence of community, we are a community based magazine. We value the loyalty of you, our readership, our contributors and our advertisers without whom it would not have been possible to publish the magazine online and now once again in print during this crisis. The days and months ahead will be crucial to the survival of each and every one of us. Crucial to all of us workers and business owners and the survival of those of us who have health problems and those children who have their whole lives ahead of them. In other words all of you our readership. With some experts predicting a second phase we must all continue to grasp this new era and continue to pull together. This means supporting our local businesses, supporting our carers and HSE frontline staff and supporting each other and all in our locality who need our help. Let us all stay safe, obey the regulations and enjoy the sunshine and remember please shop local! The Locals Team.

Swords Meals on Wheels needs volunteers

We continue to be very busy and over the past few weeks we have taken on a number of additional clients...and we are able to do so with the high level of support we have in the town......We have had a number of the volunteers that commenced with us in March when the lockdown started return to their jobs and we would really like to appreciate all the help and commitment that they have given us in this critical time.We do realize

that as more people return to work in the coming weeks/months that we are likely to lose more volunteer drivers, but we believe we will be able to maintain current level of volunteer drivers. We have had requests for transition year placements and normally we do always accommodate this, however this coming years requests may be difficult to maintain under the current climate, we will see......

Will video calls become the new normal for financial reviews? By Dave Kavanagh A survey by one of the life companies has revealed that 9 out of 10 people in Ireland were not aware that financial reviews can be done by video call. Many of those surveyed would be in favour of doing a review this way. Some of the reasons cited were: personal safety - no risk of COVID-19, convenience - no driving or parking to meet, easy to arrange, and time saving - no journey to and from a meeting. The feedback from those that have availed of this service was also very posi-tive.

Why video and not just phone call? It is often said that communication is about 20% what you say, 30% tone and 50% body language. It is far easier to understand what someone is explaining when you can see them. The reverse is also true, it is easier to gauge the pace of how you’re explaining something when you can see the reactions of those you’re talking to. Also, screen sharing gives the ability to display a variety of graphics, screens or documents from both sides. So what kind of things can you cover in a review? Most aspects of your current, future and

unex-pected income and expenditure. Your day to day budgeting, planning ahead for the short, medium and long term. Planning for unexpected events with things like life cover, serious illness cover and income protection (and making sure you are not over paying for existing plans!) Calculating what you may need in planning for retirement, including looking at anything you may already have in place. Overall, keeping you up to date and in control of your finances. It could be the most im-portant video call you make this year! Dave Kavanagh QFA has been advising people financially for over 25 years. For quotes or information (with no cost or obligation) he can be contacted by emailing info@financialcompanion. ie or use the contact form on www. financialcompanion.ie or phone 087-6414570. Combined with his previous role of gym/nutrition adviser, he regularly gives talks and workshops at seminars and events for groups, companies and government departments on financial wellbeing, positivity and motivation. Rivervalley Park Swords skeletal remains retrieved

The ancient skeletal remains found in Rivervalley Park, Swords earlier this year have now been retrieved andundergoing specialist analysis. In April 2020 locals out walking in River Valley Park, Swords spotted exposed human skeletal remains on the southern bank of the Ward River. The find was reported to GardaĂ and the National Museum of Ireland inspected the site, confirming the remains as archaeological. Due to the COVID-19 directives the site could not be excavated at the time but following the lifting of these restrictions this important work has been able to progress. The

site where the remains were found is a recorded archaeological monument where archaeologists from the National Monuments Service excavated six skeletons in 1999. These were medieval in date and as the burials were deposited in an irregular fashion within a flood plain it was thought they may reflect some form of communal hasty burial of victims of plague or other trauma.Following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions a geophysical survey was undertaken to try and identify limits of the site followed by excavation to retrieve the exposed skeletal remains. Excavation was undertaken in June 2020 at the site by Maeve

McCormick of Archer Heritage Planning Ltd under licence from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht (DCHG) in consultation with the National Museum of Ireland (NMI). Ahead of analysis Ms McCormick, an osteoarchaeologist indicated the skeleton was a juvenile probably of 10-12 years of age and part of the same cemetery excavated in 1999. Radiocarbon dating and specialist analysis of the environmental samples, small finds and both the animal and human remains is currently ongoing.

St Colmcilles – Here for the community

The clubhouse closed its doors on March 15th and all football activity halted at that time too. While we didn’t know how long for we decided as a club we could still help orhers both the Gaelic for Mothers and the men’s team virtually travelled the Coastline of Ireland, raising vital funds for “Feed the Heroes”. Each day a volunteer would tally up all the kilometres travelled between each team and mark it up on the map of Ireland. Also during the Covid lockdown St Colmcilles rallied a number of volunteers to help those who were cocooning. In conjunction with Fingal County Council ad Supervalu Pavillion, Swords, the volunteers were able to assist people with the

shopping, and chemist orders. Each volunteer was also there for a chat and a catch up with the more vulnerable people in our community. Now that Gaelic games has started back up from the 24th june, the lads team have been training hard and organizing challenge matches. The juvenile section have also returned to training each Wednesday and Saturday for the under 8’s and 9’s, while the nursery will come back in September. Unfortunately due to the current circumstances we have decided not to run a summer camp this year. But we do hope maybe to run something later for the kids.

The Gaelic for mothers and others also saw a return on Monday 6th July, and are always looking for new players. Even if you’ve never kicked a football, you could try this initiative from the LGFA. Its non competitive and non contact, an all round bit of fun while learning to play Gaelic football. Our club Lottery will hopefully return soon also and we would like to thank everyone for their support through these difficult times. The club have taken every precaution to make sure we all return to Gaelic Games safely. Swords Tidy Towns - Working Through Covid

Here at Swords Tidy Towns our fund raising activities have been severely curbed due to the Covid virus, any donations that can be made by local business and Swords residents would be very welcome. During these uncertain times Swords Tidy Towns have carried on at a limited pace, increasing our workload as we passed each of the four phases. We issued our members with protective face visors and instruction on the importance of social distance and frequent hand washing. In the first few weeks of the Covid 19

crisis during the lockdown none of us ventured out, we kept in constant communication through our Whatsapp group. We shared pictures of each other’s home projects when completed, jobs on our never having the time to get round too to do lists. Our group also started a Zoom fortnightly Quiz Night held on a Sunday night, members taking turn at hosting the event, it is always a great two hours of catch up and fun.We as a group have slowly come to terms with the new normal, constantly aware of our health and safety

responsibilities to each other as we go about the work of keeping Swords looking her best. Swords Tidy Towns are always on the lookout for new members, we would encourage people with particular skill sets, woodworking, building, IT etc to contact us, their skills would be invaluable to our planned future projects. Those wishing to get involved with Swords Tidy Towns should contact our Chairperson Ken on 0866008313 or by email on swordstidytowns@gmail.com

Enjoying the Summer after Lockdown!

By Siobhan O’Neill White Finally, restrictions have been eased and we can get out of the house after being cooped up for so long. Here are some suggestions for family friendly places to visit this summer. First off, Leisureplex. With all the rain lately, this is ideal indoor family fun. Their 6 locations have re-opened in accordance with Covid safety guidelines including hand sanitisers, social distance floorgraphics, “lane closed” bowling cones, safe-queuing floor graphics and safety shields at food diners. For days out, Irish National Stud Kildare is fantastic. Explore the beautiful gardens, follow the fairy trails, see the horses and lunch at the café. The children should sleep soundly after a day here! Dublinia is a fascinating place to learn about Vikings and medieval Dublin. Our teenagers loved this especially discovering the weapons. Interesting for all ages. All through lockdown, Droichead Arts Centre hosted virtual events to keep people connected. Now reopened, check their website to see what’s coming up https://www.droichead. com/ A summer camp we really like is Bricks4kidz Lego camps. They 12

SWORDS LOCAL-AUGUST 2020

focus on learning through Lego. Without knowing it, the children are learning STEM. Very clever and fun. For bookings, contact Steve srees@ bricks4kidz.com. At Newgrange Farm, see the baby chicks, milk a cow, visit the outdoor café or enjoy a picnic in the spacious grounds. We loved seeing the animals – even the farm dogs are super friendly and happy toplay with the children. For a perfect staycation, we love Fota Island Resort Cork. The hotel and lodges are now available tobook and their swimming pool is open too! For safety reasons, swim sessions must be pre-booked.This is one of our favourite hotels in all of Ireland. It is close to Cobh, Kinsale, Cork City and right next door to Fota Wildlife Park, so there is plenty to do! For a break on the east coast, The Village Hotel Bettystown is located just a few minutes’ walk from the beach. With ice-cream shops and beach cafes, Bettystown is a lovely seaside village. The bustling town of Drogheda is just 4 miles away and The Arc Cinema there has re-opened too, if you fancy a family trip to the movies! For more summer day out ideas, as well as competitions and reviews on places to go, visit www.mams.ie parenting website. Contact us: communitylocalseditor@gmail.com

The Great Gatsby passes on to Doggy Heaven 2010-2020 We are very sorry to tell you that The Great Gatsby passed over the rainbow bridge on Thursday 2nd July peacefully in Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind Headquarters in Cork. Gatsby, or Gats, as Tom called him, was one of a kind. He was loved by everyone who met him and by Tom in particular. He guided Tom for almost 8 wonderful years and was looking forward to his retirement when illness suddenly overtook him. We’ve all seen Gatsby with Tom around the streets of Balbriggan, Skerries, Longford, Dublin and further afield. Gatsby was a fantastic tutor to the many students he visited with Tom in various schools and colleges around the country. Among other events he accompanied Tom along with Qeb, Breege’s guide dog, and Yarrow, puppy in training, with Anne Mulligan, to Skerries Community College in 2019 and 2020. He was a brilliant fundraiser for the Balbriggan North County Dublin Branch of IGDB and if Tom couldn’t attend an event Gatsby went along willingly with whoever was trusted with him. Anne Mulligan local puppy raiser was one of his favorite people. Once he saw Anne he knew that it was time for his free run.He loved going to Ardgillan Park, the beach, Longford and many other places. Gatsby knew when he was working and when he was playing and thoroughly enjoyed his life. He always had a waggy tail waiting to greet anyone and everyone who called to the house. Gatsby joined the O’Neill household when he was about 2 years old. Unice, Breege’s guide dog at the time, was a great help to Tom when Gatsby arrived as she taught Gatsby, among other things, the route

14

to his son Eoins house. Gatsby returned the favour when he welcomed young Qeb into the family in December 2018, co-incidentally he arrived on the day Unice, Breege’s retired Guide Dog, went over the rainbow bridge herself. Gatsby helped Qeb become familiar with his new surroundings, locality and family. Gatsby was in Longford, one of his favorite places, with Tom and Breege for a few days when he started to deteriorate.Tom was in contact with IGDB in Cork and they offered to collect Gatsby from Longford to bring him to Cork for medical care and assessment. Unfortunately it was found that Gatsby had Lymphatic cancer which had spread and could not be treated so it was decided to let him pass peacefully. Gatsby never showed his illness and was with Tom every step of the way. There are so many happy memories of Gatsby, lots of stories to be told but they are for another day. Gatsby will be sorely missed by Tom, Breege, their family and the extended family of volunteers who knew and loved him. Have a wonderful time over the rainbow bridge Gatsby. If you would like to help raise much needed funds for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind as a volunteer there are many ways to do this. Please contact us on 085 7663107 by text or phone call or email GuideDogsBalbriggan@gmail.com You can also Text WOOF to 50300 to donate €4 of which IGDB will receive a minimum of €3.60 or you can log on to www.guidedogs.ie and donate there. Many thanks and best wishes from branch coordinators Elaine Skehan and Ann Mulligan on behalf of Tom

Niamh’s Summertime Frozen Yogurt Bark! A satisfying and scrumptiously refreshing summertime snack! Packed with protein and calcium.

• •

The ingredients are fairly flexible so tailor to your tastes and use whatever flavour of yogurt/ fruit/toppings you like! Vanilla yogurt or adding some honey make it scrumptious!

Multi-coloured yogurt bark • 250g Greek or Greek style yogurt • 1x passion fruit • 20g cocao nibs • 10g goji berries

The most important ingredient to use is Greek or Greek style yogurt as this will prevent ice crystals forming. Here are a few other ideas as shown in the image

Ingredients: Blueberry yogurt bark 16

SWORDS LOCAL-AUGUST 2020

200g Greek or Greek style yogurt 100g blitzed blueberries (in a blender or simply mash with a fork)

Tip: The size of the lunchbox you use determines the thickness of the bark. I used a 12cm lunchbox for the yogurt bark in these images which made the yogurt bark 1cm thick. If the yogurt bark is too thick, it will be difficult to bite into it!

Method: 1. Line a lunchbox with cling film. 2. Mix the yogurt in a bowl with your choice of ingredients. Keep a few to sprinkle on top. 3. Pour the yogurt into the lunchbox. 3. Sprinkle the remainder of the ingredients on top of the yogurt. 4. Put the lid on the lunchbox and place in a freezer for 2-4hours or until completely frozen. You will need to allow a few minutes for it to slightly defrost and become soft before eating. Only coaches and boxers due to attend training will be allowed to enter the club. There will be no access for parents / family / friends / spectators etc. We ask any member displaying any symptoms of COVID-19 to stay at home and contact your doctor, please do not attend the club.

Great to see our teams, starting to return to training. A lot of hard work has been undertaken behind the scenes to meet the FAI’s new Safer Return to Football Guidelines. None of this would not have been possible without the support of our amazing team of coaches and volunteers. Thank you all for continued support and assistance. The return to training makes it all worthwhile. The club will gradually phase all teams back over the coming period. It is Important to note that strict safety measures are now in place. So we ask all players not to arrive at training, without first contacting their manager,or a club representative.
