Fingal County Council public consultation on traffic calming schemes Fingal County Council has commenced a public consultation process on proposed traffic calming schemes it is planning to roll out across Fingal.Measures are being proposed for a total of 12 roads in Donabate, Swords, Rush, Castleknock, Blanchardstown, Ongar, Malahide, Sutton and Portmarnock.The work includes the provision of traffic calming ramps, appropriate road signage and markings where necessary.The public consultation process has now commenced and the plans, which will only be available online due to the Covid-19 restrictions, can be viewed at https://consult.fingal.ie/en/browse. How have your finances changed since COVID-19? By Dave Kavanagh A lot has changed with people’s finances due to the impact of COVID-19. Both income and expenditure look very different for many, as well as an added uncertainty in the weeks and months ahead. So what can you do to be a bit more in control of your finances? Firstly, deal with the “new essentials”. If your income has been reduced, work from the figure you are certain of. List essentials like food, utilities, mortgage etc. It may be that you have availed of a lender’s option to have a payment holiday for a few months. If you are still stretched, you may wish to temporarily freeze contributions to things like saving plans or pensions. Next, prioritise other things that you pay for. Be careful with things like life cover, mortgage protection, serious illness cover etc. If these type of plans were let lapse, there may be difficulty getting them back in place again if your health has changed since commencing (not to mention any impact from COVID-19 on premiums or underwriting. In reverse, if you were considering commencing plans like these, it would be wise to do so sooner, while there is still a degree of certainty.) Fraud - There has been a substantial increase in attempts of fraud, primarily

with “phishing” texts or emails. The most common appear to come from banks, PayPal, Apple Support and even Welfare pretending to give you payment information. Do not click on any hyper links in these messages and pay closer attention to your banking transactions. When shopping, make a list of exactly what you need and stick to it. This can reduce your shopping bill and prevent throwing out food that goes off, as well as reducing the time you need to spend in the shops. Overall, it comes down to making some time to go through your finances to put you in control of them and not them in control of you, therefore reducing anxiety around money. Ancient Skeletal remains found in Swords Park

Fingal County Council have acted quickly to secure the site where historical skeletal remains were discovered in a Swords park recently.Locals out walking in River Valley Park, Swords were amazed to see the exposed remains on the banks of the Ward River. An Garda Síochána were alerted but following an examination by a forensic anthropologist the remains were confirmed as ancient and the focus shifted to the protection of the site until further investigations could take place. Christine Baker Fingal County Council Archaeologist inspected the site on Tuesday morning along with archaeologists from the National Museum of Ireland. Due to the present COVID-19 directives the site cannot be excavated and has been secured until such time as this is possible. The National Monuments Service 10

of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the National Museum of Ireland will advise and support.There were some concerns with regard to a lack of Social Distancing as passers-by stopped to look at the site, and Fingal County Council reminds people of the importance of following Government guidelines regrading social distancing and the Public Health advice in relation to this at all times especially in Parks. Christine Baker, Fingal Heritage Officer commenting on the discovery said:”The site where the remains were found is a recorded monument and archaeologists from the National Monuments Service excavated six skeletons there in 1999. These were medieval in date and now riverbank erosion has caused another skeleton

to be exposed. These remains and the site have the potential to provide valuable insights for archaeologists and historians when a full study can be done.” Ms. Baker is well aware of the wealth of archaeological remains which lie beneath the open spaces of our housing estates and public parks. In 2019 she conducted the “What Lies Beneath: Fingal Geophysical Survey Project” with the local community to help discover the sub-surface remains in Fingal parks and also raise awareness of archaeological sites of interest. She has also directed community archaeology excavations at Swords Castle, Bremore Castle, Naul and the Drumanagh Promontory Fort.The site has been secured by Fingal County Council Operations team. Swords Community United for Clean Up

Members of our communities came together for a social distancing group clean up recently. This was organised and supported by Fingal Dog Owners Group, Swords Tidy Towns, Swords Civil Defence, and individual members of our communities. While our group concentrated on the Brackenstown Road side of the Jacko and the fields around the Manor pitches, other groups worked equally as hard in other areas. This rubbish comes from people just not bothering to bin their waste. There are unreachable areas in the park where volunteers cannot clean and household waste is dumped by the bag load! Fingal County Council have agreed to a clean up but this has been delayed because of the current restrictions.Today’s clean up was planned by Amber Maisie of FingalDOG and it was brilliant to see groups and individuals so willing to participate- proud to be a member of such a great community!

Swords Caged Bird Society – How it All Began Swords & District CBS was formed in late 1984 , the founder members were Eamon Weldon , Noel Barrett , Dodie Hughes & Marie Hughes Soon after Tommy O’Keefe , Fred Curtis , Joe Maloney and Vinnie Roche joined .The first show was held in Septemeber 1985 for members only. In 1986 a full open show was held with 860 cages enetered , Fred Curtis was show secretary and John Furley was show manager , the biggest entry was the budgie section with an entry of 270 . Borders was close behind with an entry of 265, Native finch entries was 140 and the rest of the entries on the day was made up of Irish Fancy, Glosters and Foreign finches . The show was held in the secondary school on North Street . The following year 1987 the show venue changed to St.Cronins school in Brackenstown where is remained the venue for 11 years .The show then moved to St.Colmcilles , Whitehall for 4 years . After that rein the show went to St.Kinnian’s for one year . And then to Lissenhall swords From then up till now the club show has been held in Donabate Community centre The club open show has alway attracted a big entry ranging from 1300 - 1800 birds over the last 30 years or so . Fingal Libraries significant increase in e-services Fingal Libraries has recorded a 52 per cent increase in demand for

its e-services since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis.E-services, including audiobooks, e-books, newspapers, magazines and music

streaming service have proved incredibly popular since the branch network closed at the beginning of the Coronavirus outbreak.Use

of e-newspapers and loans of e-audio books and e-books have also

recorded a significant increase during the crisis.Despite the closure

of the branch network, Fingal Libraries has continued to provide an important service to members through their online offerings as well

as ramping up their social media content.The Fingal figures reflect a

similar trend nationally with the Department of Rural and Community

Affairs announcing a phenomenal 313% increase in new users of eBooks and eAudiobooks service and a 246% increase in usage of the online

newspapers/e-magazines across the country.In response to the increased

demand, Minister for Rural & Community Development Michael Ring

recently allocated €200,000 to purchase over 5,000 new eBooks and

eAudiobooks.Fingal’s County Librarian Betty Boardman said: “We are

delighted to see an increase in the use of our e-services as our members

adjust to the new reality of our branch network being temporarily closed. Director of Housing and Community Department Margaret Geraghty said: “It is great to see Fingal Libraries playing such an important role

for people during this current crisis. In Fingal we are fully committed to

supporting community wellbeing and to ensure that although our library buildings are closed that through e-services our libraries we continue to reach out to as many people as possible. We will continue to look

for ways to provide access to library services for our citizens and look

forward to the day when our libraries are open again to the public.For
