New Interim Chief Executive of Fingal County Council

AnnMarie Farrelly, Interim Chief Executive, Fingal County Council

AnnMarie Farrelly has been appointed as Interim Chief Executive of Fingal County Council following the departure of Paul Reid to become Director General of the Health Service Executive.Ms Farrelly, who held the role of Director of Planning and Strategic Infrastructure, was appointed by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government and assumes the role of Interim CEO from today (May 14) until a permanent appointment is made by the Public Appointments Service. “Quality of life, housing and economic development will remain our key priorities for the county,” Ms Farrelly said, adding that there was a substantial operational and capital works programme to be delivered in 2019.Ms Farrelly said “It is really a great honour for me to have been appointed by the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government as interim CEO. I am looking forward to continuing the good work we have been doing as a Council since our formation in 1994.”She added: “Fingal County Council has a busy period ahead with key projects such as the Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Plan, Swords Cultural Quarter and Shackleton Gardens to be delivered.It is also an important time as we are preparing for the Local Elections on May 24 and getting ready to welcome in a new Council who will represent our 300,000 residents for the next five years. We will also be working with the elected members on a new Corporate Plan which will guide the Council over the next five years.” In addition to serving as Director of Planning and Strategic Infrastructure since 2015, Ms Farrelly was also Fingal County Council’s Director of Housing and Community from 2011 to 2015 and previously chaired the Boards of the Seamus Ennis Arts Centre and the Drinan Enterprise Centre.

The Cúis Project Drugs Intervention Programme The Cúis Project (Foróige) provides specific skills based drug intervention programmes for young people (10-24) whose substance use has became problematic or dependant.The project offers both individual and group interventions, additionally we provide a range of pro-social activities in the local area. Our catchment area is Balbriggan, Skerries, Rush, Lusk and Garristown.The project is operated and managed by Foróige: the national youth development organisation, and funded by the North Dublin Regional Drugs and Alcohol Task Force. “Thank You” from The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival

The Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival would like to say “Thank You” to all who attended our successful fundraising Quiz in Keelings on Thursday 16th May.The Quiz was organised by Rita McDermott and Fergus McDermott was the Quizmaster.“Thank You” to Carmel Carey and Jennifer Maxwell who sponsored our second prizes, to all who donated prizes for the raffle and to SuperValu, Donabate.Breda Dockrell was a very persuasive ticket seller.Markers of sheets were Rita and Tom and Larry Carolan kept the scores.We would also like to thank Keelings – they have supported the Bleeding Pig Cultural Festival every year since it started. We are delighted to announce that €1,070 was raised. Fingal Affordable Housing available at 40% Discount The Affordable Housing Scheme outlined for Fingal was agreed at the 13th May monthly meeting by Fingal Councillors. It will come into effect on the 19th of June and the first locations will be at Skerries, Balbriggan, Lusk, and Mulhuddart. It is expected this scheme, which will offer homes at up to 40% discounted prices, on lands owned by the council or the government, to be very popular and over subscribed. It’s important that potential homeowners watch out for the advertisements that will be placed in local papers . The adverts will advise that the scheme will be open for application for 3 months only .The homes will be offered on a first come first served basis..ie get your application in early.After that...if you meet the criteria, both financial and other criteria ..for example currently resident in Fingal for at least 12 months you will be made an offer of an Affordable home. The criteria of priority are as follows this order: Class A. Eligible for the scheme.(this refers to income limit categories and other financial details to be announced soon). Class B. Resident in Fingal at least 12

months. Class C. In full time education within 70km of the dwelling. (This could refer to family members in third level education or young children at national secondary school or an adult applicant at third level education) Class D. Employed within 70km of the dwelling. Class E. Employed and full time education within 70km of the dwelling. (the 70km limit may be increased in the future by Councillors , to take into account someone who might have a job further away from Fingal or the intended dwelling Cllr Tom O’Leary says “It is great to see the scheme launched and have some clarity. We need to see the financial numbers now. Fingal County Council are ready to act and they are actively working on sites such as Hacketstown Golf Road Skerries where possibly 40 plus affordable homes may be made available. Lusk Co. Dublin, Mulhuddart Co. Dublin and Castlelands Balbriggan where possibly 300 plus may become available.” Income limits: single applicants must earn less than €50,000 and couples combined income less than €75,000.”

5 Steps To a Perfect Koi Pond

Step 1- Setting Up The Perfect Environment Your perfect Koi pond starts with the actual pond itself. You have to create a pond that will not only be pleasing to the eye, but will also adequately sustain Koi. Proper placement, size, and pond type is essential when building your pond. When it comes to pond size, bigger is always better. Koi have a habit of growing rather fast, so you have to consider pond size at the same time you are considering how many Koi you are going to put it in. Unless you have a large amount of knowledge in outdoor landscaping, it may be a good idea to leave the pond building to a professional. If your pond is not build properly the first time, you will end up spending a large amount of money on fixing the problems that come up. Not only that, if your pond is not properly setup, you may not even be able to keep fish alive. Step 2- Learning About Koi Keeping Knowledge is power when it comes to Koi keeping. It is important to learn as much as you possibly can about the hobby before jumping

in with both feet. It is important to learn the information yourself rather than relying on other sources. Other people are a great source of knowledge, but may not always be a reliable source. The internet is a great place but make sure you are on a reputable site as anyone can publish something on the internet but it may not always be 100% correct, it might have worked for them but wont for you! Still some of the best knowledge you can obtain is from books, be it hard copy or in digital form! Step 3- Picking Out Koi Once you have created the perfect environment, you will need to start looking into buying your fish. It is important to remember never to purchase to many Koi because they will grow rather large. Overpopulating your Koi pond will cause serious problems in the future. Step 4- Preventing Common Koi Pond Problems You can prevent certain types of Koi pond problems by following simple prevention steps. Always make sure new fish are healthy and in good condition before adding to your pond, if in

doubt you should quarantine them beforehand. By quarantining, you will greatly reduce the risk of exposing your population to potentially deadly situations.Do water tests, this will allow you to notice discrepancies in the test results long before your pond starts showing symptoms of stress and will potentially save not only your pond, but your fish as well. Step 5- Feeding You Koi Finally, feeding you Koi can be one of the most pleasing parts of having a perfect Koi pond. You should check with your local pet store when it comes to the amount and types of food that you should be feeding your fish, feeding patterns change with season and temperature. Koi can literally be trained to eat directly from your hand. This takes time and patience, but will ultimately provide entertainment to you and your visitors.

Talented fingal students win texaco awards

Nine Fingal students were amongst 40 Dublin winners who have been presented with top awards in this year’s 65th Texaco Children’s Art Competition. Pictured is Eve Aherne (8), a pupil at St. Marnock’s National School, Portmarnock, who won second prize in the 7-8 years age category of the Competition. Presenting her with the award is Chairman of the judging panel, Professor Gary Granville and James Twohig, Director Ireland Operations at Valero. Another top Fingal winner who received his prize at a ceremony held in Enfield recently, was Bora Ozalp (10), a pupil at Rolestown National School, who won third prize in the 9-11 years age category of the Competition.Other Fingal winners, all of whom received Special Merit Awards, were Catherine Ward (18), from Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan, Clíodhna Cole-Rigney (17), from Malahide Community School, Eve McCann (14), from Castleknock Community College, Eva McParland (13), from Malahide Community School, John Carlo Ungos (11), from Scoil Bhríde Buachaillí, Blanchardstown, Patrick McCormack (8), from St. Marnock’s Primary School, Portmarnock, and Anna Watson (6), from Scoil An Duinnínigh, Swords.

Rivervalley CNS and Broadmeadow CNS will open in September 2019 Paddy Lavelle (CE DDLETB) and Adrian P. Flynn (Director of Schools DDLETB) were delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Anne McArdle to the post of Principal in Rivervalley Community National School and Mr Michael Byrne to the post of Principal in Broadmeadow Community National School. “DDLETB have a strong presence in the Swords Community through our existing post-primary schools Fingal Community College, St. Finian’s Community College and Swords Community College. We are grateful to the people of Swords for entrusting the opening of their new primary schools to us. We wish our newlyappointed Principals every success in their roles,” said Paddy Lavelle, CE of Dublin and Dún Laoghaire Education and Training Board. Adrian P. Flynn, Director of Schools with DDLETB, a Swords resident and former Deputy Principal in St. Finian’s Community College went on to say “DDLETB provide the administrative support to schools that ensure our schools can concentrate on what really matters to students and their families which is providing the highest quality teaching and learning experiences.
