Tidy Towns appeal for no election posters in Swords

Swords Tidy Towns have put out a request to each Local and European candidate in the upcoming elections not to put up posters on Swords Main St. So far we have had a very positive response from most candidates, but we would like to hear back from every candidate local and European. If any candidate has not been in contact with us to offer their support

for our poster campaign please do so. We will be publishing the names of all candidates who support a poster free Main St prior to the election date on our Facebook page. We have also asked for the support of our many followers. We have asked them to please share our facebook campaign and contact their local

Launch of Séamus Ennis Centenary Celebrations The recently launched year-long programme of events in Fingal Libraries marks the birth of Séamus Ennis 100 years ago.Fingal Libraries is delighted to partner with the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre based in the Naul for a year of Centenary Celebrations to mark the birth of Séamus Ennis 100 years ago. The Séamus Ennis Centenary Celebrations were launched on Friday 22nd February in The Atrium, Fingal County Hall in Swords, by piper Ronan Browne, along with special guests. The evening featured a performance from talented pipers on Séamus Ennis’ pipes and the reminiscences of people who knew him, including Ivor Browne. A world-class musician, singer, raconteur, mimic and linguist, he was also renowned as a folklore collector for the Irish Folklore Commission.The 23-year-old Séamus embarked on his first field trip for the Folklore Commission with little more than pen, paper, tin-whistle and bicycle. The songs, music and lore he collected now form part of the National Folklore Collection held in UCD. He continued to collect (and broadcast) songs and music from Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall, firstly for the Folklore Commission (1942-47), then Raidió Éireann (1947-51), the BBC (1951-58) and finally intermittently as a presenter on the newlyfounded Teilifís Éireann. perform in public up to his death in 1982. Betty Boardman, County Librarian, commented: “This is a wonderful opportunity for Fingal Libraries to work with the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre, to help tell the story of this remarkable musician who left a lasting legacy of music, song and folklore for the nation’’. A series of concerts and presentations in

honour of Séamus, curated by Ronan Browne, will take place in Fingal Library branches throughout the year and at the Fingal Festival of History in Swords Castle this October. The next event in the series is Music and Madness – Ronan Browne in Conversation with Ivor Browne, which takes place in Blanchardstown Library on Friday April 26th at 2 pm.

Fingal Student is Young Scientist of the Year!

Fingal has celebrated the success of its students and schools in the 2019 BT Young Scientist competition, as Young Scientist of the Year Adam Kelly was recognised for his impressive achievement.Tributes were paid at the event on March 11 (Monday) in County Hall, Swords to his family, his teacher Ms Lennon, and his school, Skerries Community College, for supporting and aiding Adam’s winning efforts. Students, teachers and family in attendance from Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan, St. Joseph’s in Rush, Portmarnock Community School, Le Chéile Secondary School, and Coláiste Pobail Setanta were also praised and recognised.Adam’s win continues a tradition of victory for Fingal students in this competition. In 2016, Maria Louise Fufezan and Diana Bura claimed the prize for Loreto Secondary School in Balbriggan. Adam’s project, entitled “Optimizing The Simulation Of General Quantum Circuits”, explores efficient ways to mathematically model quantum computers.Quantum computing uses subatomic particles to drive computer calculations and processes. It is a complex, emerging field with exciting technological and scientific applications, including the possibility of increased computing speed and power.Following Adam’s victory in the all-Ireland competition, he will go on to represent Ireland at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists

which will be held in Bulgaria this September. Speaking at the celebration, Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Anthony Lavin said: “It’s highly encouraging to see so many Fingal students and schools getting involved and active in science.“The discoveries made by Adam and the many other students who took part in the Young Scientist competition are already doing things that impact us all. From

national to local issues, from climate change to commerce, we need the ingenuity and curiosity that these Young Scientists have shown.” Fingal County Council has been active in promoting STEM to students and children, with Fingal Libraries hosting STEM Saturdays events in 2018 featuring coding, robots and engineering through LEGO.

What you should know about Serious Illness Cover By Dave Kavanagh If there is one aspect of protection that crops up time and time again, it’s Serious Illness Cover (a.k.a. Critical Illness Cover or Specified Illness Cover) but not always for the right reasons! Quite often, the topic comes up because someone has received unpleasant medical news and it prompts them to consider the “what if ” scenarios. Sadly, in many cases, it is too late at this point to be permitted to take out Serious Illness Cover. The usual medical underwriting that takes place when someone applies for cover is more stringent on Serious Illness Cover than it is for say, Life Cover. The reason is that you are far more likely to be diagnosed with one of the Specified illnesses during the term of a plan than you are to pass away.So what exactly is Serious Illness Cover and why is it so important? The cover will pay out a tax-free lump sum on diagnosis of a large number of Specified Illnesses. While the list is quite long, the vast majority of claims are for the “big 5”, Cancer, Heart Disease, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis and Loss of Independence. It is not dependent on your ability to work

‘Cult drinks’ - fingal’s enterprise award winners for 2019 A drinks business from Donabate is this year’s winner of the Fingal Enterprise Award for 2019. Organised by the network of Local Enterprise Offices nationwide, Local Enterprise Week was held during the week 4th to 8th March 2019 and featured 370 events running throughout the country, aimed at stimulating and supporting enterprise. Estimated attendance nationally was over 11,000. Fingal events accounted for over 1,000 businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs Cult Drinks took the top prize of €5,000 and will now represent Local Enterprise Office Fingal at the 21st National Enterprise Awards on Wednesday 29thMay in the Mansion House in Dublin. Employing ten staff from their based in Donabate, Cult Drinks have successfully launched and built a diversified portfolio of brands in both the domestic, UK and Global markets. There were two runners-up at the Fingal Enterprise Awards held at County hall in Swords: Busterbox from Ballycoolin (a subscription service for dog owners) and Peptalk of Lucan (a technology platform for employees to improve wellbeing). Each runner-up receives an investment of €2,000 in their business, while the other seven finalists receive €1,000. Judging is taking place in April and May and Cult Drinks will be competing against 30 other finalists from every local authority area for a share of the National €40,000 prize fund.

€3.4 million for Housing Adaptations Grants - Cllr Tom OLeary €3,377,777 has been made available to support home adaptations for older people, people with a disability and people with mobility issues in Fingal , a Fine Gael Councillor has said. The funding, which has been increased this year, will enable older people and people with disabilities to remain living independently in their own homes for longer and will also facilitate early return from hospital. Councillor Tom OLeary said: “I am confident that today’s allocation will continue to build on the progress made since the introduction of this scheme in 2007 and it will demonstrate the Government’s continued commitment to older people and people with a disability.This follows on from the launch last week of our policy document ‘Housing Options for Our Ageing Population’, which committed further resources from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government for this scheme.I am also pleased that funding has been increasing year on year since 2014 and this shows the importance that is attached to the scheme. These grants have an immense impact on the quality of life of the many beneficiaries and play a vitally important role in helping people with a disability and people who are reaching an age in life when they are less mobile, to continue to live independently in their own homes.” Councillor Tom OLeary continued, “Grants of up to €30,000 are available to assist people with a disability in carrying out necessary works to make a house more suitable for their needs, up to €8,000 to assist older people living in poor housing conditions to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out and up to €6,000 for mobility aids to address mobility problems for a member of the household. The grants are 80% funded from the exchequer by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, with 20% funding or €675,555!from from Fingal Co Council .The grants also create employment opportunities for builders and local businesses and help reduce the dependency on our health services by supporting independent living for as long as possible.”

Comhaltas Leithinis Donabate Portrane The newly formed Comhaltas Leithinis Donabate Portrane is going from strength with ever increasing numbers attending. Our first event was with a number of other groups- Irish Comhra Group, AAFA Cantoiri, Tower Singing Circle & Comhaltas Leithinis Donabate Portrane. Which was held at Cates Cafe & in the mall at the Supervalu shopping centre recently! So if you are interested in Irish music and song why not give us a try? Keelings Sessions We began our Keelings sessions (for over 18s) on Wednesday 27th March at 9.00pm After that, they will revert to being on the third Wednesday of the month (Wednesdays- 17thApril,15th May,19th June), stopping for summer, to resume in September when we begin our full programme of lessons and sessions. We will meet in the back function room of Keelings, and in September will move into the main lounge DJ area. Slow sessions in Café Natural - Wayne Hand Slow sessions for beginners/refreshers will take place weekly in Café Natural on Sundays from 11.00-13.00.The first date will be Sunday 31st March.The first hour will be for children primarily, the second for adults. These slow sessions are open only to members of the Leithinis Donabate Portrane Comhaltas due to space constraints, and from September attendees would be expected to be regularly attending classes with the branch. We hope to join people at the Sessions- eg Family Membership €20 per annum. Session FREE! We will be setting up an email address & facebook page in the near future & are very excited with the great response so far!

Here at Roganstown we had a great 2018 and 2019 is even busier. We have some fantastic membership options and we have just introduced a Starter programme for Ladies in Golf. We ran a small campaign on Facebook with both clubs participating, And along with the ladies club we have had a massive response. Our 3 Professionals along with the lady members will guide and coach all these ladies over a 12 week period and introduce this beautiful game to all these interested ladies. We are again hosting the U18 Girls Irish Strokeplay Competition from 5thto 7thApril with all the top European, English, Scottish, welsh & of course the Irish. This is a huge event and is covered widely in the Golf circles and a high 12

percentage of these young ladies go on to play on the World professional circle. We have had 2 past winners go on to world fame and represent themselves and their countries with Pride, Leona Maguire & Olivia Mehaffey. This event is open to the public and is free of charge and if you fancy watching this amazing talent in action, please come along and support Team Ireland. We are hosting our annual PGA pro Am on Friday 10thMay. This is an opportunity to see Irelands top PGA professionals in action . There are individual slots and teams available. We will run 2 shotgun starts, one in the morning at 08.30am and one in the afternoon at 2.00pm. Breakfast & lunch will be available for the

morning teams and lunch and presentation dinner will be available for the afternoon teams. This is always a great way for companies to entertain clients playing with a top professional on one of Leinsters top courses and entertaining them to Roganstown Hospitality. Membership options are available on both courses and all members of the clubs get the courtesy of the other course Monday to Friday, so if you like your golf, well there is only one place to look.We look forward to a busy year and hopefully we get a repeat of last summer which was unbelievable for you avid golfers. Fingallians club notes St Patrick’s Day: Well done to all who turned out for the annual Swords St Patricks Day Parade its always a great way to show off how great a club we are .Great work by Liam and all the parade group. Easter Camp: This years Easter Camp has been confirmed for Tue 23th to Fri 26th of April 9am til 1pm. Please note this is a slight

change to previous years. Applications forms will be available shortly from the bar. Summer and Kellogg’s Cup Camp dates will be confirmed in the next few weeks. Portable Goals on the All Weather: There are new weights on the Portable goals on the all weather pitch please keep them with the goals and also when moving the goals do not slide them as they tear the pitch when they are moved like that. Just lift them and wheel them, this is a two person job. Ladies Colleges Football: Well done to all the Fingallians Ladies in the Colleges Championship Finals,those involved were Shannon Murtagh (DIT),Emma Colgan (DCU),Emer Ni Eafa (DCU),Sinead Finnegan (DCU),and Fiona Hudson (selector) with DCU who were all winners in their respective Competitions. Irish Oral Exams: Aoife, Amy, Muireann and Sarah have agreed to hold mock oral exams for Junior & Leaving Cert students at the club on Tuesdays at 8 pm for the next few weeks. We will cover all parts of the syllabus so bring your Sraith Pictúir agus filíocht. This is a great free of charge community service that should be availed of by all. Camogie Foundation: We had Fifteen members who completed the Foundation Camogie Course in the club on Saturday under the guidance of Donal Ryan. Included in the course was Erin O’Brien who is the first player who has come through the ranks to complete the course since the Camogie section was established in 2011.
