Swords ranked highly in the latest litter survey

Swords has been placed third of 40 towns and cities in an anti-litter survey for 2019 by the business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL). Swords obtained a “Cleaner than European Norms” ranking for 2019, while Dublin Airport Environs also scored well achieving 19th place out of 40 towns and cities surveyed and given a “Clean to European Norms” rating in the list.IBAL is an alliance of companies sharing a belief that continued economic prosperity – notably in the areas of tourism, food and direct foreign investment – is contingent on a clean, litter-free environment.Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Eoghan O’Brien, said: “It is great to see Swords high up on the list and going beyond what is required to create and maintain a clean environment for everyone in the community. Swords Tidy Towns have been instrumental in this achievement and I would like to thank them for all the work they have done.’”An Taisce, who carried out the surveys on behalf of IBAL, stated: “A stellar showing for this large urban area on its return to the League. Swords is a model for others to follow. The River Walk and Castle Shopping Centre were top-ranking this time around, as was Swords Town Park (excellent in terms of presentation and maintenance), Swords Castle and the Main Street – the latter presented well with silver bollards, floral arrangements, traffic light box art, seating etc.” David Storey, Director of Operations in Fingal County Council, added: “Being placed so high on the 2019 list recognises all of the work that goes into keeping Swords tidy and litter-free, and I would like to thank everyone who has put the work into making this possible.” As part of the IBAL Anti-Litter League, An Taisce monitors towns independently and in accordance with international grading standards.2019 was the 17th year of the IBAL Anti-Litter League.

Fingal County Council named “Local Authority of the Year”

Fingal County Council has been named Local Authority of the Year at the InBusiness Recognition Awards 2019.The award was accepted by Deputy Mayor of Fingal Cllr Tom Kitt at the awards ceremony held in the Westbury Hotel in Dublin. Cllr Kitt said: “I am delighted to accept the InBusiness Award for Best County Council. A key part of our mission statement is to make Fingal the best place in Ireland to do business in and winning this award for the second successive year indicates that the work we are doing on the ground is having a positive effect on the business community.” Cllr Kitt added: “There is a growing recognition amongst all stakeholders of the

importance of local authorities and our ability to get things done. We are the closest government agency to the citizen, and business, and are therefore best placed to deliver services directly to them.”Fingal County Council Chief Executive AnnMarie Farrelly said: “It is a great honour to receive this accolade in recognition of our efforts to improve the quality of services we deliver to all our stakeholders. Part of our vision for Fingal is to make it a good place to do business in, so it is particularly pleasing to be recognised for our efforts in this area.”

Fingal County Council part of Young Scientist Exhibition

Fingal Libraries, Digital Fingal and Smart Dublin teams at their stall at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition

Fingal County Council were delighted to take part in Ireland’s most exciting festival of science and technology recently.The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, now in its 56th year, was a fun-filled spectacle of creativity and inspiration, offering something for people of all ages.Fingal County Council showcased innovative digital initiatives that look to improve the way we live and work in Fingal – from using drones to prevent illegal dumping, rolling out smart street furniture that can charge your phone and give you free Wi-Fi and developing

interactive maker spaces to enhance creativity and innovation.The Fingal County Council stand was in the World of Science and Technology exhibition hall. At the stand, attendees could create some wearable technology, play with robotics, learn about the many digital services from Fingal Libraries, charge their devices at the Fingal smart bench and take part in a 3D virtual reality experience of the City. The Digital Fingal team, Fingal Libraries, Smart Dublin and Dublin Maker were all on hand to showcase Fingal’s Digital projects

and services and to answer any questions from attendees.At the heart of the Exhibition there were 1,100 students representing 244 schools across the island of Ireland who competed for the coveted title of BT Young Scientist & Technologist(s) of the Year 2020. Last year Adam Kelly, a student from Skerries Community College was awarded the overall prize for his project entitled “Optimizing the Simulation of General Quantum Circuits”, which explored efficient ways to mathematically model quantum computers.

Final Call for Environmental Projects Dublin Rural LEADER on behalf of Dublin Rural LAG invites Voluntary Community Groups, Charities, Medium Enterprises, SME’s to submit Expressions of Interest for funding under the LEADER / Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. Available Budget:

Total budget of €500,000 is available to applicants. Grant amounts will range between €5,000 (min) and €200,000 (max)

This is a decadent and rich dessert. Quite simple to make and uses minimal ingredients. I like it with a dollop of vanilla yogurt and grated chocolate as in the picture. Ingredients: • • • 8

1.Preheat a fan oven to 180’c. 2.Blitz the dates and any remaining liquid in a food processor/blender. 3.Melt the dark chocolate carefully in a saucepan over a gentle heat and stir. Once it is all melted, remove from the heat and stir in the blitzed up dates. 4.Mix in half of the ground almonds and

2 eggs. Then add the rest of the ground almonds, the final egg and vanilla extract and combine well together. 5.Pour the mixture into a nonstick or pre-lined with parchment paper baking pan and bake in the oven at 180’c for 20 minutes.
