Leinster Fleadh Coming to Swords 10, 11, 12 July 2020

On Sunday 17th November Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann held a special concert at Pavilions Shopping Centre, Swords to welcome the coming of Fleadh Laighean / Lenister Fleadh to Swords between 5th and 12th July 2020. 28 musicians in all performed. Both adults and children took part and the event was very well received by the public. The group even expanded their repertoire to include some Christmas tunes, much to the delight of the younger audience. Many Dublin Comhaltas branches were represented including Seán Treacy, Malahide, Balbriggan, Lucan and the newly formed craobh out on the Donabate/Portrane peninsula. Mixed in with the high standard of music was a

spectacular Irish dancing performance by some Comhaltas members that raised “oohs and aahs” from the audience as they jumped and twirled to the tunes provided by the musicians. Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Eoghan O’Brien was in attendance to express his support for the Fleadh. The mayor said “The coming of Fleadh Laighean to Swords is a fantastic event that will help further raise the profile of Irish music and also the profile of Swords and the wider Fingal region. I would hope that the coming of Leinster Fleadh to Swords will pave the path for the possibility of the national Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann coming to Swords in a few years”. The Leinster Fleadh is a weeklong event

that involves traditional Irish music. On the competitions side there will be numerous venues in use including Swords Castle, Fingallians GAA, Fingal Community College, Prosper Fingal and St. Colmcille’s National school. The week will see competitors representing the 12 counties of Leinster and vying to win places in the AllIreland final that will be held in Mullingar in August 2020. On the social side of the week there will be music sessions of every type throughout the town and feature concerts at Swords Castle. Street closures will add to the atmosphere during the ultimate weekend of 10 th, 11th and 12th July. The Leinster Fleadh is organised by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann.

Play it again - upcycling instruments scheme

Swords Tidy Towns have instigated an Upcycling initiative which involves finding new homes for unwanted Musical Instruments. The initiative was a great success with the two local schools we approached. Their music teachers were delighted to take the instruments from us saying it was a fantastic project. We have had expressions of interest from other schools in the Swords area who would like to link up with us on this project.Swords Tidy

Swords Castle East Tower Nominated for Engineers Ireland Excellence Award The Swords Castle East Tower Consolidation project has been nominated in this year’s Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards 2019.Fingal County Council’s Architects department worked alongside David Kelly Partnership and CORA Consulting Engineers in this phase of the redevelopment of Swords Castle which is part of the flagship Swords Cultural Quarter project. County Architect, Fionnuala May, said: “It is great news that the Swords Castle East Tower Consolidation project has been nominated for this award. It is recognition of the careful work that is being done in the conservation and repair of Swords Castle as part of the wider Swords Cultural Quarter project.“I would like to give a special thanks to all those involved in this project, in particular the Architects Department team here in Fingal County Council and our Consultant Engineering partners in David Kelly Partnership and CORA Consulting Engineers.” The remains of Swords Castle today consist of a large, four-sided partly battlemented curtain wall, approximately 4M high, containing several mural buildings and structures, including the entrance Gatehouse, the restored Chapel and Constables Tower and the semi-ruined East Tower.The East Tower consolidation works combined modern methods alongside traditional to conserve as much of the medieval fabric as possible.One of the significant conservation challenges was the consolidation of the East Tower. The overall stability of the ruins was a matter of concern considering the pronounced lean on the tower, extensive cracking, and surface erosion of the Dublin calp limestone.An honestly-expressed, functional concrete plate ties the three remaining walls together, and a traditional lime-based shelter coat protects the vulnerable masonry.The visual impact is striking, clearly differentiating the new insertion from the original, as well as being respectful of the historical setting.

Make Your Minutes Count with ALONE this Christmas

In Dublin on 15th November 2019 ALONE, the organisation that supports older people to age at home, launched their Christmas campaign, which encourages members of the public to make their minutes count by working together to tackle loneliness and isolation. Author Marian Keyes launched the organisation’s Christmas campaign, to encourage members of the public to take a few minutes out of their day to interact with their older neighbours and relatives who may be experiencing feelings of loneliness as the festive season approaches. “Older people have the most amazing stories to tell”, she said. ALONE is also asking for support from new volunteers and donors to help to support them to combat loneliness and other challenges faced by older people. One in ten people over 75 are lonely a lot 8

of the time and demand for ALONE’s services has increased five-fold in recent years. One in 4 older people live alone, and this increases in rural areas. Marian commented, “I’m delighted to be helping ALONE launch their Christmas campaign this year, to spread awareness of such an important issue. I admire the work that they do with older people and I’m so happy to be a part of such a positive message. Loneliness and isolation can be serious problems for older people and dropping in for a chat or helping a neighbour with their shopping could make all the difference to their mental health. We’ve all felt alone at certain times in our lives, sometimes all it takes is a cup of tea and a bit of a laugh to really lift an older person’s spirits. A few minutes

may not mean much to you, but to a lonely older person it could be the highlight of their day.” She continued, “As we age, it can be more difficult to reach out to people for companionship; a lot of older people might be embarrassed or too proud to admit that they are lonely. What might only seem like a quick chat to you can make an older person feel loved, appreciated, and that they are part of the community. Your Finances - Do these excuses sound familiar? By Dave Kavanagh “Let’s go for a drink?”, “How about a nice meal out?”, “Shall we book a nice holiday?”, “How about an afternoon shopping?”, all questions that are (usually!) met with a positive response. “Shall we have a look through our finances and plans that we have in place?”, not usually met with the same enthusiasm or joy! For many reasons, people put off or avoid having to go through an exercise such as this, despite the fact that it can lead to them spending less and having more money left over each month! So, what excuses do they present to avoid this not-so-desirable activity and what are they really saying? Let’s have a look: 1 “I’ll have a look at that after Christmas”. This is sometimes replaced with “after Easter”, “after the holidays”, “after the kids go back to school” and a host of others. This is a bit like the “I’ll start the diet next Monday”. What you are actually saying is “I’ll name some time in the future, so I don’t have to face up to it or think about it now”. Let’s face it, you can make time to spend 30-60 minutes even once per year to look at something this important. Every year will have Christmas, summer time, back to school time, etc. Once you do, you’ll be glad that you did! 2 “We have everything in order already”. Great. That is, if you’ve done this in the last few

months but many people we’ve heard this from, on closer examination, haven’t looked at this area in years and are not really sure what they have. Circumstances change and it’s important that whatever you have in place is the most relevant for your own personal situation. 3“Our bank has sorted all that out for us”. Your bank may have sorted a few things for you but in most cases, banks are tied to one company’s products which means a fair comparison cannot be done and you may be paying way over the odds for whatever the bank put in place for you. Dealing with an advisor who is not tied to one company and can compare other options is the only way to make sure you are getting the best value for money. 4 “I’m busy at the moment, I’ll give you a shout in a few months”. Let’s face it, going through your finances is rarely on anyone’s favourite activity list. But the fact remains, if there is an activity you like, you can make time for it. Burying your head in the sand is rarely a successful solution to most problems! 5 “I’ve no spare money at present”.This usually comes from thinking that a review is going to either cost them money or they will have to take out something new that will cost them more money. The reality is, a review will usually highlight someone paying too much for something so the end result is, they save money.

€1,050 awarded under the Youth Sports Grants Scheme to local clubs Fingal County Council has awarded over €95,000 to 91 sports clubs throughout Fingal under the Youth Sports Grants Scheme. At this week’s full Council meeting, Councillors approved the funding which will see €1,050 allocated to each of the successful organisations.The purpose of the Youth Sports Grants is to assist existing sports clubs towards the purchase of equipment, refereeing/coaching fees, with the main aim of increasing participation levels in their local communities. The Fingal Sports Office, part of the network of Sports Ireland Local Sports Partnerships, invited sports clubs to apply for a small grant under this scheme. Successful applicants had to meet a number of criteria such as to have sport for young people as its primary focus and have a voluntary management committee with elected officers. Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien said: “I am delighted to see this allocation of funding to sporting organisations across Fingal, which play such a pivotal role in the health and wellbeing of our young people. I would like to commend all those volunteers who give so freely of their time and energy to their clubs.”Fingal County Council Principal Sports Officer, Marion Brown said: “Sport is an extremely important part of the lives of young people, I am delighted that this is being recognised and that we are able to provide funding to the chosen sports clubs to ensure that young people in Fingal can continue to enjoy playing sport in their local clubs.”Having examined all applications, it was decided to award a grant of €1,050 each to the following local sports clubs: Swords Basketball,Swords Boxing Club, Swords Celtic Schoolboys, Swords Manor Football Club,Taekwon-do ITF Warriors Inclusion (Swords), River Valley Rangers. European Youth Champion boxer Niamh Fay of Swords Boxing Club honoured with civic reception at Fingal County CouncilFingal County Council has held a civic reception at County Hall in Swords in honour of boxing champion Niamh Fay who won gold at the European Youth Boxing Championships.A member of Swords Boxing Club, the Ballyboughal native won the gold medal when she defeated Croatia’s Nikolina Cacic in Sofia, Bulgaria in September.The 17-year-old comes from fine boxing stock – her father, Gary Fay, is her trainer and a former Irish title-holder, while younger brother John Fay won bronze at the Europeans last year. Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eoghan O’Brien said: “I’m honoured to host the first civic reception of my tenure to recognise an inspirational athlete. Niamh was the only Irish boxer to reach the finals from a team of 19, and the youngest
