MetroLink project to Swords must proceed soon target”.This is not acceptable given the project’s importance to North Dublin and the pressing

need to link an ever-expanding Dublin Airport to the city centre and bring it into the national

rail network.As we seek to leverage and build on

Fingal’s key strengths in terms of our people, our communities, our built and natural heritage, and our existing and planned infrastructure, a key

piece in our development jigsaw is MetroLink.

As we enter a period where there will be a greater focus on our efforts to combat Climate Change the provision of infrastructure like MetroLink will become even more important as it will

encourage more people from Fingal and beyond

to take public transport. Anybody who travels by Fingal County Council Chief Executive Paul Reid has insisted that the MetroLink project to Swords, via Dublin Airport, should proceed without further delay, regardless of any issues relating to the southside aspect of the route, to ensure it meets its 2027 completion target. Fingal County Council is currently waiting on Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the National Transport Agency to reveal their final preferred

option following a period of extensive public consultation last summer. Their initial plan saw the original long-standing Metro North proposal being replaced by a longer route that now extends southwards from the city centre to Sandyford. Mr Reid told councillors that the ongoing delays in relation to the publishing of the final preferred route had led he said to “genuine fears that MetroLink will not be in place by its 2027

car, bus or bicycle from North Dublin into the

City Centre any weekday morning will be aware

of the positive impact that MetroLink is going to have on commuter traffic. But, for that to happen within the outlined timeframes, we now need

a clear commitment that the Northern route is

going to be prioritised because we are ready for it

Gaelscoil Ros Eo Celebrate Tenth Anniversary By Rebecca Daly Gaelscoil Ros Eo has begun planning their celebrations for their tenth anniversary. The school was set up in 2008 and was held in the Rush Scout Den in Kenure Woods. In February 2009, the school moved to its current location on the grounds of St. Maurs GAA Club in Rush.The school are marking the occasion on June 7th. They plan to hold some shows in the school - as Gaeilge, of course – during the day for the pupils along with some other activities. They also plan to invite their past pupils in to celebrate the anniversary. In the evening, they will invite parents to a celebration in the hall in St. Maurs GAA Club with a barbeque, music and a raffle. To fundraise for this special day, the school are running a monthly cash draw called “an Pota Óir”, which translates to pot of gold. To enter this, participants send €5 in a special envelope into the school. All of the envelopes are then put into a drum and one winner is chosen. The money made from the collection of the envelopes is split into two, with half going to the chosen winner and half to the school. The first draw took place at Christmas, with the school and the winner taking €265 each!The draw is open to everyone and envelopes can be collected in the school. 4

18,000 Jobs Plan for Swords - Cllr Tom O’Leary Four significant Masterplans on 67 Hectare or 165 Acres at key strategic locations in Swords were discussed at the Balbriggan Swords Area Meeting of Fingal Co Council said Cllr Tom O’Leary He said, “The plans include 218,000m2 of Offices space capable of providing 18,000 Local Jobs. That’s 55 acres of Office Buildings in 4/5/6/7 storey buildings in a very central location in Swords ten minutes from Ireland’s National Airport, Dublin Airport . This will be a very attractive proposition for major foreign direct investment companies- big employers looking for large office buildings capable of holding 1000 employees and upwards “ said Cllr Tom OLeary He also said, “2700 Homes are included in the plan, adjacent to the lands for office buildings.There are two hotels included in the plan, including a landmark building over 10 storiess at the entrance to Swords on the Fosterstown lands.There is a large amount of green space planned in this Co ordinated development, and its the intention that these lands will be provided early in the process. The development will be phased over a period of years. Metro North is key to this large development proposal and I am calling on the

SWORDS HISTORICAL SOCIETY -Old Houses Project

‘If houses could speak’ is an on-going project of Swords Historical Society. The many old houses around the town of Swords that have stood the test of time, all have their own story to tell. How often have you looked at an old building and wondered what went on there many years ago? The Society has researched several buildings which was part of an exhibition in the County Hall last year.The picture shows an old building

on North Street which has been closed up for some years. Where you to pass by there in the early part of the 20th century you might have heard the sound of young lads playing about of perhaps having pillow fights while Matron was not around. The house was first occupied by a Mr Cloney who had a shop on Main Street. The 1911 Census tells us that the house was then an Orphanage called Smyley’s Home or ‘The Birds’

Nest’. It was a home for Protestant Orphan Boys. The Matron was Miss Neville. There were 14 boys recorded there in 1911 aged from 10 to 14 years. They marched up the town every day to the Old Borough School on Main Street and were sometimes jeered by other lads from around the town. Records show that they were all born in Dublin, but not from Swords. Because of the perks that went with being pupil in the Borough School, the boys were lucky to have the chance to be educated there. The orphanage closed c 1935 and the house was converted into two residences; one owned by Mr and Mrs Keane who were Principals on the Boys’ and Girls’ School nearby. The other house was occupied by the Heeenan family and Mr Heenan ran the Post Office from there at one time. The old house is still there looking very lonely but will possibly be the sight of an apartment block in the future. More stories of the ‘hidden history’ of Swords are to be found in the Swords Voices series. Don’t wait until your health prevents you getting the best value By Dave Kavanagh “It’ll never happen to me”, would appear to be the thought process behind the lack of preparation many people are guilty of, when it comes to planning for negative events. Let’s face it, nobody wants to think that anything “bad” will happen to them but the reality is, bad things happen whether we like it or not. The three areas that are most prevalent to this topic are, Life Cover, Serious Illness Cover and Income Protection. Of course, we would hope that we are not going to die prematurely, we are not going to get seriously ill and accident or illness will not prevent us from being able to work. Sadly, in this small country of ours, over 7,000 people die each year NOT of natural causes (under age 65), we are heading towards 40,000 new cancer cases every year (the cause of more than 50% of Serious Illness claims) and the average time off work for an income protection claim is close to 5 years! When I do group talks, I often ask the question whether anyone’s close family or friends have been affected by cancer? I have only ever had one person say “no”. When I ask whether the same close family or friends have ever won the lotto jackpot, not surprisingly, it’s (almost) always “no”. Yet with odds of 10.7 million to 1 to win the lotto jackpot, people spend a relatively large amount of money each week on lotto (and Euromillions and scratch cards etc.) believing and hoping that

it will happen to them. The same people have a 4 to 1 chance of being diagnosed with one of the Serious Illnesses covered BEFORE they are 65. We often review people’s finances and see that they have their vehicles insured, their house insured, their pets, mobile phones, lap tops and jewellery insured but not themselves! It’s not until one of these events happens that people can fully appreciate the financial loss that is suffered. An important detail is that even if people have cover in place from a few years back, they could well be paying over the odds premium wise or it may no longer be most appropriate. I recently had a couple who had given up smoking a few years and this would have allowed them to reduce their premium by about half ! The problem was, there was now a medical issue that would prevent new cover and so they remain paying smoker rates because they didn’t review sooner. Gambling. So, you can gamble on nothing bad ever happening to you and putting your money into hoping that something very good will happen to you but reality clearly shows which is far more likely to happen. As the saying goes, “I’d rather have it and never need it rather than need it and never have it”. There are a range of protection plans to suit everyone’s budget. For the cost of a takeaway each month, you can usually have something in place that would make a huge

difference in the event of one of those “bad things” happening. But it won’t get put in place by itself and putting it on the “long finger” will also not get it done (as well as run the risk that your health in the future could prevent you being accepted for cover at all). If you or your family would suffer a financial loss in the event of a fatality, a serious illness or a long period being unable to work, it’s up to you to make sure that you have protected them against such a loss. It could be the wisest money you ever spend and it could cost far less than you might think! It’s important that people consider their own, specific circumstances, as subtle differences can mean what’s appropriate for one person or family may not be for another. For free

Community Groups lobby for better transport Community groups from across Fingal have come together to lobby for better public transport infrastructure. Representatives from Malahide, Skerries, Rush and Donabate met recently in a bid to form a group to seek improvements in the stretched public transport links in the area. The meeting was called by Donabate Portrane Community Council. The surge in building and growing employment has meant that it was now proving difficult for commuters to access services to get to work, the meeting was told.The roads network is also congested.Private housing development activity is now very close to 2008 levels, when the housing boom was at its peak, according to recent information from Fingal County Council.Bus services at peak times are

at capacity and there was a need for more direct services into the city, the group said. Rail was not a viable option for many in Fingal.There has been little investment in the Northern Commuter rail line in the past few years, the meeting heard. At a recent meeting with Irish Rail community groups were advised that there would be no significant improvements until at least 2021.This is despite the fact that passenger numbers are up 5% year on year on already, leading to record numbers on this route. The meeting of the Fingal community groups in Donabate was told that transport links must be prioritised in terms of addressing infrastructural deficiencies to the rail and bus network. Donabate Portrane Community Council

recently raised these issues at the Fingal County Council’s Public Participation Network planning, housing and transport linkage group meeting. A petition has also been circulated in Fingal calling on the Minister for Transport Shane Ross and National Transport Authority to prioritise and urgently ring-fence the necessary funding required to address the public transport deficits.The meeting was told that Minister For Transport Shane Ross and NTA must ensure the provision of direct bus services into and out of the city centre at peak times to alleviate the congestion on the trains. Donabate Portrane Community Council is calling on all community groups along this rail line to support and share this petition as a matter of urgency.

Joint Supplements – Does my dog need one?

The answer to this may seem quite simple, especially if you have an elderly dog with arthritis, then yes a joint supplement will absolutely be of benefit to your dog. But what about the rest of us with healthy fit animals? A number of factors can come into play when trying to answer this question, health & size of the dog being two that come to mind straight away! Most people will come to the conclusion that their dog is healthy and therefore feeding a joint supplement is probably not necessary until the dog gets older or indeed starts showing signs (slowing down, stiffer movement especially in the morning, or trying to get up after a nap/rest) that they might well need one, but there are many situations where feeding a joint supplement can be considered a wise

investment, as the good old saying goes ‘prevention is better than cure’. Larger dogs as well as working dogs who are more active and put their joints under more pressure & strain would be a prime example where feeding a joint supplement earlier on may be of great benefit to them later on in life. The two main types of joint problems we see in dogs are developmental and degenerative. Developmental joint problems would include hip or elbow dysplasia (a deformity of the hip/elbow joint that occurs during the growth period). Whereas a degenerative joint problem is usually seen as osteoarthritis. A joint Supplement in most cases will certainly help your dog if they suffer from either of these ailments but will also slow down the onset of these if you start

them before your dog shows any signs or symptoms. Joint supplements are very gentle on your dog’s system and not like medication, with most you cannot over dose your dog on as your dog will only absorb what’s needed. There are many different types of joint supplements available, albeit some better than others but the majority of these supplements share two common ingredients, Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Glucosamine aids in the production and rebuilding of cartilage, allowing for smoother joint movement. Chondroitin which is often used in human healthcare for its anti-inflammatory effects, will also help to maintain cartilage and keep ligaments and muscles strong in your furry little friends. If you think your dog might

Scrumptious protein pancakes just for you Protein has become a bit of a buzz word and although most of us in Ireland DO eat enough protein for what our bodies need, a lot of us tend to eat the majority of our protein in our evening meal. Research has shownthat it is more beneficial to try and eat food sources of protein throughout the day rather than a load all at once! Having protein in this way and especially following exercise that uses our muscles will help to keep our muscle and our bodies lean. And the great news is that applies to everyone, no matter your age. Here is a recipe for ‘protein pancakes’ which uses basic food ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen!

Ingredients

Makes 5 x 100g FULFILLING Pancakes!!! 12

3 eggs 200g oats 300ml high protein milk 2 tablespoons chia seeds

Method 1. Blitz the oats in a blender/nutri bullet until they turn into a flour like mix. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until mixed thoroughly. 3. Heat a non stick pan. 4. When the pan is hot pour some of the mixture on and allow to cook for 2-3 minutes. (Covering the pancakes will help them cook faster). 5. When the edges start to lightly brown and look dry and bubbles start appearing

on the pancake surface,flip the pancake over and cook the other side. Top them off as you like and GOBBLE EM UP!!!! (I love mine with peanut butter, sliced banana and dark chocolate drizzled on top as a scrumptious and VERY satisfying treat!)
