Helen Dunne was selected on Monday 10th December at the Swords Fine Gael Convention to contest the Local Elections for the party in May 2019 in the Swords Ward where there are 7 council seats to be contested. Preferences asked for new primary schools Fingal parents are invited to express their preference in relation to the patronage of the 2 new schools in Swords, Fine Gael Senator James Reilly has said.The invitation follows on from the Government’s announcement of the establishment of 42 new schools over the next four years from 2019 to 2022.Senator James Reilly said: “I encourage parents of children in Seords who will be starting school in the next five years to engage with the process. This is your opportunity to make your views known and help to shape the education of the future. “This system has been developed to provide objective information to all parents and guardians which will allow them to make an informed choice in expressing a preference for a patronage model and language of instruction for their child’s education. “These planned 2 new schools in Swords North and South were decided following on from a nationwide, forward-planning exercise carried out by the Department of Education into the future need for primary and postprimary schools across the country.

The four year horizon will enable increased lead-in times for planning and delivery of the schools.” Minister for Education Joe McHugh said: “We are fortunate in Ireland to have a growing population. However, this growth puts pressure on our public services. If we are to have a world class education and training system we must ensure that we adequately prepare for this future need by planning necessary modern school facilities now.” The patronage process for new schools is overseen by the independent New Schools Establishment Group (NSEG). This Group was set up in 2011 to advise the Minister on the patronage of new schools following its consideration of a report prepared by the Department on the applications received.Parents are invited to express their patronage preferences using the Department’s new Online Patronage Process System (OPPS) website - https:// patronage.education.gov.ie The 2 primary schools will serve the following school planning areas:Swords/North and Swords/ South.

Work begins on phase two of Swords Castle Fingal County Council has announced that a contract has now been awarded to Kelbuild Ltd in respect of the Swords Castle enabling and conservation works (Phase 2). The contractor is on site, but the castle will remain open to the public throughout the period of renovations. This exciting phase of the castle’s regeneration will provide visitors to the castle even more opportunity to explore this wonderful historic site as the works will see a replacement of the perimeter ramparts with a bespoke modern walkway. County Architect, Fionnuala May, said: ‘The works will allow public access to part of the castle walls facilitating viewing of the castle itself and Swords. This phase will also see consolidation of the East Tower and repairs to the Chapel roof.’ It is expected that the work will be completed by the end of March 2019. The works to Swords Castle are partially funded under a grant issued under the European Regional Development Fund for Swords Cultural Quarter. The Swords Cultural Quarter will be a new major central public and civic space outside Swords Castle featuring a new Library and Civic Centre building to sit alongside County Hall as well as new landscape interventions in the in the park and the town The Castle is open all year round and tours, subject to demand, are provided by Fingal Tourism who can be contacted at info@ fingaltourism.ie or by telephone at 01-8400891. Making Nutrition your Goal via Futsal

The FAI, Fingal County Council and its community partner Swords Pavilions highlighted their new innovative healthy eating initiative via futsal this week. Launched in the impressive Swords Pavilions Shopping Centre, the program will see 1400 young players aged between 7-12 years taking part across 5 Fingal County Council venues and Gormanston Park. With support from experts in their field ‘Nutrition Wise,’ a comprehensive childfriendly healthy eating guide has been designed and will be issued to all coaches, parents and players taking part over the six weeks along with a nutritional talk for all coaches. The FAI and Fingal County Council sports department are delighted to use football and in this instance Futsal (the official UEFA & FIFA Indoor 5 aside game) as a tool to encourage the critical message of healthy eating and lifestyle. Ian Hunter, centre director of the Swords Pavilions, commented: “We are excited to partner with the FAI & FCC for this futsal program taking place across our local community. It gives kids a fantastic opportunity to express their futsal skills in 10

a safe environment. The extra dimension this year of a nutritional element takes this programme a step forward giving the players and their coach’s practical advice in this area while ensuring it’s delivered within the enjoyment of the game. How To Improve Your Chances of Mortgage Approval By Dave Kavanagh When you make the decision to purchase your own home, it’s usually done by getting a mortgage from a lender. Strictly speaking, the word “mortgage” refers to the legal agreement to hold title as security for a home loan, but these days, most people use it to refer to the home loan itself. The right preparation can make a huge difference in whether or not an application is successful. Lenders have an obligation to make sure they have assessed the affordability of the loan, and how you prepare can be crucial. There are a number of factors to the criteria used to assess your borrowing potential. These include the Central Bank guidelines of only lending (in the majority of cases) 3.5 x gross annual salaries, and not exceeding 90% of the purchase price (for first time buyers). Also, the lenders have their own formulas based on your NDI (net disposable income) to make sure that you can still afford to live comfortably on what remains after you have paid your monthly instalment. Probably the most important factor after taking these into account, is how you display a “proven ability to repay”. By this, I mean that when a lender considers your application, which will normally include things like payslips, P-60s, salary certificates and bank statements, how evident is it that you can afford the monthly repayment? For example, supposing

the monthly cost of the loan you are applying for is €1,400 per month. A lender will “stress test” this figure (to allow for a possible increase in interest rate during the term of the loan) and look to see affordability of perhaps, €1,550. So if you are evidently paying €1,750 rent every month, this shows affordability. Or you could be paying €1,000 in rent and also showing that you save €800 per month. If this is not evident over a regular period of time, it can, combined with other factors, lead to an application being declined. Another important aspect, is how you conduct your bank statements. If your statements show that you reach a nil balance every month before pay day, or worse, go into overdraft, this will not instil confidence in your ability to repay. Just as important is clear evidence of savings for your deposit. Even when these things are in order, something that can hugely affect the amount you qualify for, is any short term lending, whether it’s credit card bills, car or personal loans. Best to have none at the time of application, and also important to make sure any short term lending is paid timely as a credit report showing your history of paying such things will also be viewed. Buying a home is usually the single, biggest financial transaction your will make in your lifetime. Make sure you plan in advance to get it right.

Public Consultation for Integration and Social Cohesion Strategy

Fingal is one of the most diverse counties in Ireland and to ensure the needs of all citizens are met Fingal County Council has begun the process of developing their Integration and Social Cohesion Strategy. A Community Integration Advisory Council comprising members of the public has been established with support from the Public Participation Network (PPN) and the Fingal Ethnic Network. While this group represents the voice of residents in Fingal, the experience of the public engaging with Fingal County Council services is necessary to inform the strategy. The public are invited to have their say by completing the survey on: https://consult.fingal.ie/surveys. Welcoming the launch of the survey, Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony

Lavin said: “Fingal’s communities are rich in diversity and it is vital that we implement an Integration and Social Cohesion Strategy that reflects and supports this diversity in order to further develop inclusivity and equality across the County.”Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid said: “Fingal County Council’s Community, Culture & Sports Division is actively engaged with representatives from diverse groups of Fingal’s population. The Consultation for our Integration and Social Cohesion Strategy allow members from migrant communities to engage with the Council and contribute to a strategy that benefits their wellbeing and quality of life in Fingal.” It is anticipated that the consultation process will conclude in early January 2019.

Busy year ahead for Balbriggan/North Dublin Guide Dogs Balbriggan\North County Dublin Branch of guide dogs nominated Andrew Green guide dog owner Balbriggan under the category of music and Zenon Debny and family under the category of integration for the Balbriggan Community awards that took place on Thursday 6th of December in the Bracken Court hotel. The Debny family have puppy walked 7 puppies for guide dogs and some have gone on to be assistance dogs for families who have a child with Autism, one has gone on to be a guide dog and another has gone on for breeding with another guide dog center in Europe. Zenon and family are from Poland and are very much at home in balbriggan. Andrew Green is a tenor and enjoys singing with choirs, weddings and funerals as a profession.Tom O’Neill Co-Chair of the branch and Andrew Green are known in many schools throughout the north county area for giving talks on guide dogs and visual impairment. Our East Region office is now open!!!We are delighted to announce that the doors of the new guide dogs offices in Dublin to be known as the East Region office are now open and everyone is welcome!The office is located at 48 upper Mount Street, Dublin 2. We are going to the Dublin Lord Mayor’s Charity Ball - The Lord Mayor of Dublin Niall Ring is hosting the Lord Mayor’s Charity Ball on Saturday 26th January 2019 in the Round Room at the Mansion House.He will host the Ball for three charities, with monies raised being split between them. Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind is one of these charities! Home Cook Recipes

Gorgeous Granola Granola can be full of fibre from oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit in addition to lots of vitamins and minerals. However it can also be full of sugar and a lot of granola in Irish supermarkets are quite high in sugar. This homemade recipe for granola below is simple to make. Wholesome and satisfying to have. And it is scrumptious with fresh fruit and natural yogurt or milk for breakfast, supper or as a snack!

Ingredients • 350g oats • 100g chopped pecan nuts • 150g other chopped nuts (such as hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews or flaked almonds) • 150g mixed seeds (such as pumpkin, chia, sunflower, flaxseed/linseed) • 130ml maple syrup/honey • 2 teaspoons cinnamon • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract/essence • 40ml melted coconut oil or rapeseed oil 14

• 150g dried fruit of your desire (such as raisins, sultanas, cranberries, chopped dates, chopped apricots)

Method 1.Preheat the oven to 160’c. 2.Place a baking sheet or a piece of parchment paper onto a baking tray. (This is to prevent the granola mixture from sticking to the baking tray). 3.Add the melted coconut oil/rapeseed oil, maple syrup, vanilla and cinnamon into a large mixing bowl and stir to combine. 4.Add the remaining ingredients (EXCEPT the dried fruit) into the mixing bowl and coat the dry ingredients with the moist ingredients. Use your hands to really bind the mixture well together into small clumps/clusters. 5.Spread this mixture as an even layer on the lined baking tray. Use a second lined baking tray if needed. 6.Bake in the oven at 150’c for 35-40

minutes until the granola is golden. Keep an eye on the granola and turn the tray half-way through baking to ensure all the granola is baked evenly. Avoid stirring the granola as this will reduce the granola clumps/clusters. 7.Make sure the granola is completely cool (this will ensure you get nice crunchy clusters!). Then add the dried fruit and store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 1 month.

Fingal Enterprising Women are Making it Happen

Over 100 Fingal female entrepreneurs joined the Local Enterprise Office Fingal to celebrate the start to the festive season at the annual Fingal Enterprising Women Network (FEWN) Christmas Lunch recently at the Roganstown Hotel and Country Club.The theme and keynote of the event were forward-looking: â€œConfidence in Action - Empowering Your Success in 2019â€?. Special guest speaker, Sharon Rossignuolo is a dynamic Business and Leadership Coach who loves nothing more than to see female entrepreneurs soar to their potential and thrive! As well as delivering an uplifting and motivating talk to attendees, Sharon ensured that everyone present takes full advantage of the wonderful networking opportunity. Addressing the gathering of female entrepreneurs, the Mayor of Fingal Cllr Anthony Lavin reported that female entrepreneurship is alive and thriving in Fingal. Commenting that, of the 31 businesses approved for business priming and expansion grant funding in Fingal in 2018, 14 of these businesses are led by women, with a further three led jointly by female/male directors, so over 50% are led solely or jointly by women entrepreneurs. Our Local Enterprise Office also reports that of the 151 people that have so far this year completed the Start Your Own Business programme, more than half (52%) are female entrepreneurs, and of the 526 candidates that participated in management development workshops this year, 69% are women entrepreneurs demonstrating strong female enterprise activity within Fingal. The Local Enterprise Office in Fingal runs the Fingal Enterprising Women Network. It provides networking and learning opportunities for women in business and enterprise in the region. The Network meets up every quarter and provides a platform to female entrepreneurs (and aspiring entrepreneurs), to network, build useful local business contacts and keep up to speed with critical issues affecting businesses. Dublin’s All-Ireland stars honoured at County Hall

Fingal County Council has honoured three Dublin All-Ireland winning teams at a special reception at a trophy-filled County Hall in Swords.It was a wonderful evening at County Hall as members of the Dublin senior men’s and ladies All-Ireland winning teams, as well as the Dublin Junior Camogie team were honoured for their sporting exploits during the summer. The cups were paraded proudly into the Council Chamber on Monday evening as Fingal County Council paid tribute to the four-in-a-row Dublin men’s winning team and the two-in-a-row ladies team. Also joining the reception was the Junior Camogie team who were also crowned All-

The GAA and LGFA bring people of all backgrounds and ages together in an inclusive and exciting way.“It allows those who take part in playing or running the clubs to connect with their community, make friends and learn a fantastic skill. Thank you all for your contribution and for joining us to celebrate this evening.” Cllr Lavin added: “With 24 clubs across Fingal, the communities have very proactive players,

managers and volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to running the facilities needed for these teams to train, compete and represent their clubs and county at all levels. As Mayor of Fingal, I would like to thank you all for your hard-work which benefits so many people across the county.” Fingal County Council Chief Executive Paul Reid also paid tribute to the winning teams, describing them as role models to young people across the county.Sport plays an important role, not just in terms of physical health but mental health for our young people. Senior Dublin Ladies: After another super year for both Dublin Senior Football Teams the Senior Ladies picked up Seven All Star Awards ,well done to Ciara Trant,Goalkeeper,Sinead Goldrick,Right Half Back,Siobhan Mc Grath,Centre Half Back,Lauren Magee,Midfield,Noelle Healy,Centre Half Forward,Lyndsay Davey,Left Half Forward,and Sinead Aherne Right Corner Forward and also Player of the year where she scored a whopping 5.21 and led her team to a second successive All Ireland Win. U11 Finstars Girls Team: The FinStars, U11 Girls Football, hosted a 5 club, 8 team tournament on Sunday in Balheary, the guests included 2 Meath clubs: Ratoath GAA & St. Pat’s with Dublin clubs represented by Na Fianna & St.Sylvester’s. The overall competition was won by Ratoath GAA with a marginal difference between all the teams in the overall competition.
