Editor’s Note Starting in September

For most kids the start of a new school years brings excitement and anticipation but some are frustrated when they enter a classroom- the kids who are confident and competent on weekends and holidays begin to withdraw. These are the children who try to scrunch down in their seats, hoping to be invisible. They hold tightly to the belief that “if I can’t see the teacher, the teacher can’t see me.” They make excuses and messes - but seldom eye contact. School is a challenge for them, but also for their parents and teachers. When it comes to teaching one size simply does not fit all but time and resources are limited. One key toward change is using encouragement and reward rather than criticism and punishment - to bolster their belief in themselves. September marks a new year with new possibilities. Let them start over. For some kids, this may be the greatest gift you will give them all year.

Butler, “it is great to see shops such as this bringing life back to the Castle end of Swords Main Street.” www.lovesuits.ie was one of four Swords shops to make the top 100.

Fleadh and Fair comes to Swords The inaugural Fingal Fleadh and Fair will take place from September 15-17 in Swords, Co. Dublin as part of Fingal County Council’s Creative Ireland Programme for 2017. The event celebrates the strong tradition of music in the Fingal community and will be centred around tuition, participation and performance. The weekend will feature Free Workshops, Concerts and Talks by some of the biggest names in Traditional Irish Music. Swords Castle will be at the heart of the event, opening with a very special concert featuring Mike McGoldrick, John Doyle & John McCusker and A Stór Mo Chroí. A Busking Competition will take over Swords on Saturday, September 16 - Main Street will be closed to traffic. The top prize of €500 will be awarded to the Winners on the Gig Rig and they will get to open for the Headline Act, Dervish. The medieval grounds of Swords Castle will host a programme of Workshops, Recitals and Talks in the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre Marquee. This will be surrounded by a vibrant Fair of Artisan Food, Drink & Craft and a wide selection of Musical Instruments in the beautifully restored 4

Chapel. A Session Trail around the town will feature performances by musicians from all over the country including Alan Doherty, Karan Casey, Tola Custy, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh and Donogh Hennessy. The Gig Rig will have Free performances from Ulaid, John Spillane, Lumiere, Liam O’ Connor & Seán McKeon and lots more. Paul Reid, Chief Executive Fingal County Council said: “The inaugural Fingal Fleadh is shaping up to be a fantastic weekend where the people of Fingal will get to experience the best in traditional music and culture. I am excited to welcome some of the biggest names in Irish music to our County Town, Swords, for a fantastic family weekend.” Cllr. Burials uncovered at Swords Castle Dig Season three of the Swords Castle: Digging History community dig continues until September 6. One trench dug was positioned to find the missing wall of the East Tower, but instead the remains of at least three burials have been uncovered there. Speaking about the discovery Christine Baker, Fingal’s Community Archaeologist said ‘It is not the first time that burials have been uncovered at Swords Castle, however the depth, just a few inches below the ground surface, is surprising. We know from previous works that an 11th century burial ground was here before Swords Castle was built. Indeed we have found isolated human bones, which we have dated to this period, during Seasons 1 and 2 of our Swords Castle: Digging History project. But to find burials that haven’t been totally removed by the old orchard or subsequent works so close to the surface is very unusual’. The burials have been disturbed by tree roots and given their position and condition, they will not survive reburial. In agreement with the National Museum of Ireland and the National Monuments Service, the burials will be excavated. An important element of the archaeology project has been to relocate skeletons which were uncovered in 1971 by Tom Fanning and have since disappeared. “We now have an opportunity to solve the questions that have remained unanswered for over forty years’ said Christine Baker. ‘By excavating, analysing and scientifically dating these remains we will be able to find out more about the people who were buried here and when they were buried. The find has generated a lot of excitement among the volunteers on site but everyone is very respectful that these are remains and they will be excavated in an appropriate manner. They will then be sent our osteo-archaeologist Dr Linda Lynch for analysis ’.

Cúl Camp 2017: We had a record 364 kids taking part. It is a record for the club and waiting to see if it is the biggest in the country. Swords Summer Festival Councillor Darragh Butler, Adam Butler and the Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Adrian Henchy, get to meet the legendary Bosco as part of the Swords Summer Festival Puppet Show last Sunday in the Swords Castle marquee.

Multi-agency operation targets fly-tipping Fingal County Council and the Gardai are involved in a multi-agency operation which targets fly-tipping in Baldoyle. Checkpoints have been established at random locations and times across the area with officers from Fingal County Council’s Environment Enforcement Unit being assisted by Gardaí from Howth Garda Station, Divisional Crime Task Force, Traffic Corps and Armed Response Unit. The checkpoints will continue over the coming weeks. The aim of the checkpoints was to identify unauthorised and bogus refuse collectors committing offences as well as members of the public who are availing of the illegal service being offered. Both the unauthorised collectors and their clients can be subject to prosecution with fines and possible imprisonment under the Waste Management Act 1996 and the Litter Pollution Act 1997. 8

As a result of the Baldoyle operation, Fingal County Council made several seizures and is now actively seeking to identify the owners of this rubbish in order to prosecute them. A Fingal County Council spokesperson said: “Illegal dumping across Fingal is a serious issue and we are adopting a hard-line attitude in relation to prosecuting unauthorised collectors as well as those who are employing them to dump their rubbish. The check-points in Baldoyle were extremely successful and we are grateful to An Garda Siochana for their support in mounting this operation. We would appeal to the public to report incidents of fly-tipping to the Gardaí or to ourselves on our hotline number which is 1800 20 10 93.” Cllr. Darragh Butler welcomes the initiative and has called for it to be extened to cover the entire Fingal area.

Sailing to success The Irish Power Kite & Sandyacht Association will host the European Championships 2017 - marking the first major International Sandyacht competition to be held on the Island of Ireland since the 21st European Championships were in Northern Ireland in 1983. This is the first time in the event’s 55 year history that the event will be held in the Republic of Ireland. The event will see 110 sandyacht pilots from 16 countries including (3 non-European countries). Pilots will range in age from 17 to 76 years. The venue for EC2017 will be the beaches of Laytown and Bettystown, County Meath, from September 10-15.The event will bring over 2,000 plus tourist nights to the East Meath area and generate a lot of tourism for Ireland’s Ancient East. The event is being used to showcase the area and to deliver a successful event for FISLY, with the intent of getting Ireland onto the schedule of future international sandyachting events and possibly hosting a World Championship event at some stage in the future.

Recreation scheme grants welcomed Senator James Reilly has welcomed the announcement of grants for the Martello Tower Skerries, Ardgillan Castle, Martello Tower Howth and a cycling safety promotion grant under strand 1 of the Rural Infrastructure Grants. He has called for increased development of routes and facilities in the council area to further promote activity-based tourism. “Fingal has great potential, for a Coast and Castleway cycling and walking route and it will take sustained determined effort to make that a reality,” he says. “Fingal Co. Council have already completed the necessary work for the Balbriggan to Barnageeragh Skerries Route and can now focus on the final leg of that route and come up with a comprehensive plan to link Skerries to Ardgillan Castle along the Balbriggan Coastal road and onward then to Balbriggan. “I note progress has been made on the Malahide to Donabate cycling and walking greenway across the estuary via the train tracks and that a planning application to Bord Pleanala is imminent. “I welcome the progress on linking up Newbridge Demesne and Malahide Castle . “Finally I would also support Fingal Co Council in drawing up a feasibility study to link Skerries, Loughshinny, Rush and Lusk to Donabate, completing the link all the way to Malahide and providing a super greenway from Balbriggan to Malahide and onward into Dublin.

‘Pesto’nishing Pasta Method

“Back to school and back to routine makes this an optimal time of year for getting into good habits from the get go! A lot of eating healthy comes from good food prep such as meal planning, shopping lists, batch cooking and making use of leftovers. This pasta recipe below is quick and easy to throw together and is boasting full of energy and colour to help fuel the body back into school, work and whatever other life demands after the summer break. Make a batch for an evening meal and use up leftovers for lunch the following day. 2 meals done in 1. Pop by to my Biabites cooking demos in October at the Balbriggan Food Festival” Method: 1. Cook the pasta. 2. Gently heat the onion and garlic in a pan with a tablespoon of pesto. Turn up the heat and add chopped chicken. Add another tablespoon of pesto and stir occasionally until chicken is cooked. 3. Add in tomatoes and chorizo and take off the heat. 4. Add in remaining pesto, cooked pasta, spinach and feta cheese and stir well to mix altogether. To make the pesto; blitz the basil leaves and pine nuts in a powerful blender/food processor. Then add the garlic and parmesan and blitz more. Slowly add the olive oil bit by bit while still gently blitzing in order to help it blend in. Scrape down the sides of the blender throughout the blitzing to ensure all ingredients mix thoroughly. Enjoy and see you in October!!
