July is the month when photos move outdoors and Fingal offers many chances to make memories - beaches, parks, festivals and more. It is also the time when photos are ruined by what brought us out to play in the first place - the sunshine. Here’s a few easy tips to get better results this Summer. It seems counter-intuitive but a bright sunny day is often a terrible time to get photos of family and friends. Not only do the conditions force your loved ones to squint into the lens, but the harsh light also creates dark, distracting shadows on their faces. Set your camera or phone to ‘auto-flash’ and check the results frequently. One advantage of bright sunshine is that it lets you take action shots quickly and, hopefully, will freeze the scene in perfect detail. Get in as close as you can - the more you zoom in the more you will experience camera shake. When you are taking photos of your children get down to their level! It works a dream. Remember, digital photography is free so make full use of your ‘Burst’ photo opton - it’s always great to have a choice. And, just because you are snapping away, don’t forgot to make sure you have some protection from the sunshine - there’s nothing quite like sunburn to ruin your day!

Fingal Film and Arts Festival The walls are 800 years old, the festival is brand new. 2017 sees the Fingal Film and Arts Festival reignite from within the medieval surroundings of Swords Castle, Co Dublin. The community-driven celebration of the Irish and international film scene that began in 2012, returns in 2017, broadening its attention across the ‘arts’ while remaining dedicated to film in a revamped format. Tucked behind the battlements and towers, a blend of film, live music, and live stand-up comedy will occupy the 1.5-acre courtyard. With outdoor screenings, guest speakers, acting/casting and Foley workshops for children and adults, children’s animation screenings (sponsored by Brown Bag Films), family-friendly morning raves (Morning Gloryville), DJ sets, full bars and after parties, 2017’s Fingal Film and Arts Festival offers a banquet of excitement and fun for all ages. Highlights include hosting Ireland’s premiere of Simon Well’s ‘Knights of the Damned’ (from the producers of Game of Thrones) on Friday night (7pm), Saturday evening’s live performance by Ireland’s musical powerhouse, Paddy Casey, at 8:15 pm, and Sunday’s fun fused Morning Gloryville yoga/rave party at 12 noon. The three-day festival kicks off on Friday the 11th of August, running through the weekend. AIB cash bonanza should benefit all Brendan Ryan Labour Party TD for Dublin Fingal, has called on the money raised from the Government stake in Aer Lingus to be directed towards investment in the health system and for getting Metro North on track. “The possible €3 billion in proceeds from the sale of AIB could be invested in the schools, hospitals, roads and water infrastructure we need as outlined in the latest report from the European Commission. We have a need in North County Dublin to progress the Metro North project as soon as possible. We need to prioritise major infrastructure projects and none is more important than Metro North, ” Deputy Ryan says.

Dublin Airport Launches €10M Community Fund

Dublin Airport is launching a new €10 million Community Fund that will support a wide range of local community initiatives. The Dublin Airport Community Fund will invest €400,000 per year over the next 25 years in local projects focussed on areas such as; environment and sustainability, sports and recreation, social inclusion and community development, health and wellbeing, and culture and heritage. “Dublin Airport has been supporting projects in local communities for decades and as the airport grows with additional facilities such as the new North Runway, we are expanding our support for those neighbouring communities,” said Dublin Airport MD Vincent Harrison. “The new Community Fund represents is a very significant expansion of our existing local activities, as we are more than doubling our annual community spend,” he added. Dublin Airport is the largest employer in Fingal, with 19,200 jobs located directly at the airport or at airport-related businesses, according to Mr. Harrison. “We also depend on many of our neighbouring communities to provide the staff who work at the airport on a daily basis, not just for daa, but also for all of the other businesses that are based here because of the airport. The new Dublin Airport Community Fund will further strengthen those already close bonds between the airport and its neighbours.” Dublin Airport has supported community initiatives for many years in areas such as sports, education, literacy and the arts. Organisations

and activities currently supported include; St Margaret’s GAA Club, Naomh Mearnóg GAA Club, Swords and Malahide Young Musician of the Year competitions and Fingal Libraries’ Battle of the Book reading programme. The new Community Fund will support local projects in the neighbouring communities around Dublin Airport from Santry south of the airport to Rolestown in the north and from Tyrrelstown on the west to Portmarnock on the east. The Community Fund will also support up to 10 students per year from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to enable them to attend Dublin City University (DCU) via its Access Programme. “By working with Dublin City University’s Access Programme, the fund will provide scholarships to students that may be marginalised, giving them the life-changing opportunity to access third level education,” Mr Harrison said. Awards from the Community Fund will be made by an independent Grant Making Panel, chaired by Marian Burns, Director of Human Resources with DCU. The grant making panel will also include two representatives from local businesses and two representatives from Dublin Airport. The fund has a transparent application process for grants, the full details of which are now available on the Dublin Airport website. There will be two calls for funding applications each year - in February and September - and payments will be awarded in April and November. Organisations can apply for grants under three

different headings: minor grants of €5,000 or less to suit smaller initiatives; major grants of €5,000 or over for projects that have medium or longterm benefits and capital grants for the purchase of equipment or the improvement or construction of buildings. Dublin Airport’s Community Fund will open for applications for the first time on September 1 for a period of six weeks with the first allocation of funds being distributed in November this year. Applications will be accepted from organisations such as voluntary community groups or clubs, residents associations from local communities, schools/colleges and companies limited by guarantee. The fund will support community-led projects in the immediate vicinity of Dublin Airport and communities which are located under a flight path. The parameters of the fund – both geographically and in terms of the type of activity that should be supported - were designed following detailed public feedback that was undertaken as part of the consultation process for the new North Runway. “Our intention is that the Community Fund’s annual spend of €400,000 will reach the neighbouring communities that are most impacted by airport operations,” Mr Harrison said. Things to do this Summer Summer school holidays are here and parents are starting to panic! But don’t worry, there is loads of things you can do to keep the little ones occupied! Pack a picnic and head to Ardgillan Castle for the day. Build sandcastles on the beach. Or bring home seashells, paint them, pop them in a glass jar and hey presto, a gift for Nanny! Inevitably there will be days when it’s raining, so stock up on baking cases & equipment (Dealz, from 1.50) and make cakes to entertain them. If you fancy a day out somewhere different, pack a picnic and check out Airfield Estate in Dundrum or Irish National Stud in Kildare - they are fab to spend a day and there is loads of space for the children to run and play. For a rainy day, the National Aquatic Centre is brilliant and is close to the M50, so easy to get to for family day out or for their sports summer camps. Shedding a new light on friendship

Lord Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Darragh Butler, was on hand for the official handover of Swords Men’s Shed premises on Seatown Road (Aldi) by Paul Dunne (Knifedge) recently. It was one of his final acts before handing over the chain of office after a very busy year. Based on an Australian idea, the Irish Men’s Sheds Association encourages communities to

develop their own safe haven, where men of all ages and walks of life can come to an informal meeting where skills are developed, shared and learned, and social connections are created. The workshops can cover anything from woodwork, metalwork, crafts, gardening, art, or even choir groups. In a world where men’s mental

health has been overlooked, the need for a place where men can express their thoughts with people who understand is badly needed. A Men’s Shed is a dedicated, friendly and welcoming meeting place where men can come together, share their skills and knowledge with others, learn new skills or redevelop old skills.

All Ireland Winners: Just recently our young Dubs won the Clarke Cup for the final time. They defeated Galway in Tullamore. Well done to the squad and club panellist Oisin Lynch. Sluagh Hall Update: The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler unveiled a plaque for the reopening of the Hall in May. Gaeilge: Our Irish language group meets in the club each Wednesday night from 9-10 pm. Fun and free. All standards welcome. Bain triail as. Race Day - Saturday 8th July in Bellewstown. Our aim is to fill 40 tables, so please help us reach our goal. The money raised last year helped fund several projects including the re-surfacing of the all-weather pitch. This year our target is to raise €20,000 which will be used to deliver on critical club development projects including the upgrading of our training facilities at the ball wall and running track. Scheme for School Clothing and Footwear

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance scheme for 2017 is now open for applications. The budget provision for the 2017 scheme is €37.4 million and eligible families will receive a once-off payment to assist them with the extra costs incurred when children start school in September 2017. The rates of payment are €100 for children between the age of 4 and 11 years and €200 for children over 12 years of age. “I encourage all local parents of school children to examine their entitlements”, said Cllr Tony Murphy (Ind). Mega Mangolicious Ice-cream

Method Ingredients • 2 mangos (frozen chopped without skin) • 2 bananas (frozen chopped without skin) • 4 tablespoons vanilla strained/greek style yogurt (Tip: The strained/greek style yogurt has a thick, creamy consistency and is also high in protein)

There are many variations for the below recipe but I have kept it nice and simple. It is mega refreshing, smooth, creamy and provides a nice dose of vitamin C, potassium and calcium which in addition to Vitamin D from the sun will help to keep bones and teeth strong and healthy. Tip: Mangos are relatively cheap at the moment. Make sure they are soft as it will make them easier to cut and blitz up! Method to mangoliciousness! 1. Blitz the frozen mango and banana in a powerful blender for a few minutes until it starts to become smooth. 2. Add in the vanilla yogurt spoon by spoon, mixing gently in between and until you achieve a nice soft scoop consistency. 3. Gobble it up or freeze it for later....if you can resist!
