Welcome to June

When politics and religion are too incendiary, and gossip can rebound on you, there is always the weather to discuss. And, where weather is concerned, we generally have a pessimistic view! “Yes, it has been a nice couple of days, but it can’t last, there’s a cold/rainy spell on the horizon - I feel it in my bones.” June, in fairness, is a month of change - officially it is Summer but the month is not quite Spring, not quite Summer, long evenings but not as long as they will be in July and August, warm but with a hint of heat to come. It’s the time of year to get off a little early from work, see if the barbeque has survived the Winter, get the kids out of the house (without any electronic playthings), limit TV watching and generally get the garden up to scratch. And, when the weekend comes around, this is the time of year when you will find plenty to do in Fingal. With parks and beaches galore every family can enjoy free fun at their own pace or veg out in the often vain attempt to get a suntan before sunburn :) And, when you are out, bring a camera, we are always looking for local Fingal photos - who knows, we might even print some of them (in December! to remind everyone that we actually did have a Summer).

Mayor’s Seminar hears calls for Metro North to be fast-tracked

A major seminar on Metro North has heard calls for the project to be fast-tracked as Fingal County Council has already taken the necessary steps to facilitate it and are willing to work with Government and the relevant national agencies to deliver it as soon as possible. The seminar, which was hosted by the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Darragh Butler in The Atrium at County Hall, Swords, discussed the merits of accelerating the development of Metro North, from Swords to Dublin Airport and onto the City Centre. Metro North was identified by the Government in 2015 as a priority project in Building on Recovery, its infrastructure and capital investment plan 2016-2021. However, work on the transport corridor is not expected to begin for a number of years and is planned to

be in operation by 2026/2027 at the earliest. The Government is currently undertaking a mid-term review of its investment plan and has additional resources to commit to priority projects. Fingal County Council is advocating the sustainable development and business case for Metro North to be fast-tracked so that future development can be underpinned by a fast, dedicated and efficient metro line. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Darragh Butler said: “I hope today’s conference has achieved its aim of showing how important it is for Metro North to be fast-tracked because it is the gateway to a prosperous future for the people of Fingal, the residents of Swords and those with businesses along its Economic Corridor.” Fingal Council’s Chief Executive, Paul Reid, supported the calls by the Mayor stating: “A decision to bring forward the implementation of this critical phase of national infrastructure will also create the certainty required to stimulate investment by public, commercial, semi-state and private sectors to ensure that complementary development occurs in the most suitable places and at the right time.” Fingal County Council’s Director of Strategic and Planning Infrastructure, AnnMarie Farrelly, outlined how the Council has used its recently approved 2017-2023 Development Plan to copper-fasten the Metro North Economic Corridor as far as Lissenhall where the Council

envisages, in addition to a major park-andride facility, a new mixed use urban area with significant levels of residential and employment development. Ed Hearne, Fingal County Council’s Director of Economic, Enterprise and Tourism, spoke about how Metro North will underpin the economic growth of the county and added: “A decision on the early delivery of Metro North can bring the certainty and confidence to unlock further investment and deliver a transformative economic impact for Fingal and the Dublin region.” After each of the keynote speeches there were panel discussions, moderated by Newstalk presenter Bobby Kerr, which included Hugh Creegan, Director of Transport Investment and Taxi Regulation at the National Transport Authority; Alison Hardiman, Head of Planning and Environmental Law, at McDowell Purcell; Kevin Toland, Chief Executive, DAA; Professor Brian MacCraith, President, Dublin City University; Guy Thompson, President, Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce and Mary Rose Burke, CEO, Dublin Chamber of Commerce. The seminar was attended by key stakeholders from across the Dublin region, including elected members of Fingal County Council and both Houses of the Oireachtas as well as representatives from Government Departments and national agencies.

Sluagh Hall Swords Opened by Mayor of Fingal Sluagh Hall, located beside Fingallians GAA Club in Swords, has been re-opened by the Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Darragh Butler at a ceremony on the 9th May. The Hall will become the new home for Swords Boxing Club and will also be used by Fingallians GAA Club.

Sluagh Hall which was opened for the first time in 1938 by Eamon de Valera was one of a number of purpose built military facilities opened in the 1930s. The Hall served a military use as the home of the Local Defence Force and FCA for 75 years until its closure in 2013 due to the reorganisation of the Reserve Defence Forces nationally. At that time, Fingal County Council identified the opportunity to redevelop the Hall for use by the people of Swords and acquired Sluagh Hall from the Department of Defence in January 2014. Fingal County Council engaged with Fingallians GAA Club and Swords Boxing Club and came up with a plan to convert the facility into a home for two of Sword’s prominent sports namely Gaelic Games and Boxing. It was decided to divide the Hall into two separate parts to maximise the potential of the Hall as a facility that could be used by both clubs to develop their respective sports. Speaking at the Hall’s opening Fingal’s Chief Executive Paul Reid thanked the two clubs for their support of the Sluagh Hall project and the level of co-operation they showed to Fingal County Council during the many stages involved in delivering the project and continued “Your efforts in encouraging participation in sport, particularly among our younger citizens are very much to your credit and are something the Council supports fully. This refurbished Hall stands as a great example of Fingal County Council’s

work in breathing new life back into properties that come into the Council’s ownership for use by the local Community.” Speaking at the opening, Mayor Darragh Butler said “There has long been a strong tradition of voluntary military service in the area of Fingal, not least of which was the participation of men from the area in the 1916 Rising, both in the city and rural areas across the county. Throughout the years Sluagh Hall was recognised for volunteering. It is then most fitting that this spirit of volunteering will continue through the endeavours of Fingallians GAA Club and the Swords Boxing Club. I wish Fingallians and the Swords Boxing Club many happy years in their new homes here in Sluagh Hall and thank you for bringing life back to this old building.”

Council honours first graduates from TY Football and Fitness Course

The country’s first ever Football and Fitness Course for Transition Year students held its inaugural graduation ceremony at the Fingal County Council Civic Offices in Blanchardstown recently when 25 TY students received their certificates in front of an audience that included their parents and family members. The ground-breaking course provides the young students with the opportunity to meet their educational requirements while developing a whole range of football skills and also gaining a full Fitness Instructor’s qualification from Litton Lane Training. This football centred education initiative was run in Corduff Sports Centre over the course of the 2016-17 academic year. The Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Darragh Butler, Fingal County Council Chief Executive,

Paul Reid, and Ireland U21 Team Manager Noel King, attended the event along with representatives of Blanchardstown Area Partnership, Sport Ireland and elected members of Fingal County Council. Speaking at the event, Paul Reid congratulated the 25 students who attended the course and added: “Within Fingal County Council we have a ‘can do’ attitude and this is another excellent initiative by our Sports Office. We are aware that young people within our community have sporting ambitions and this programme gave the students an excellent opportunity to develop and enhance their sporting skills while staying within the education system and also giving something back to their local communities through the work experience module of the course. It ticks a lot of

boxes for us as an organisation which is focused on the development of communities within Fingal.” The course run in partnership with the Football Association of Ireland and supported by Blanchardstown Area Partnership and Sport Ireland was extremely well-attended and recorded an impressive average attendance rate of 93% throughout the school year. In his address, Noel King spoke to the graduates about the unique opportunity that they had been given. He encouraged them to follow their dreams and said that the skills they had gained will stand to them in all walks of life including whatever sport or sporting role they may decide to pursue in the future. Denis Hyland, an FAI-Fingal County Council Football Development Officer and Course Coordinator, stated: “The course allows TY Students to live in a proper sporting environment for a year while also meeting their educational needs. They are at an age when some young players head abroad to join professional clubs and this programme allows them to reap the same footballing benefits and a lot more while remaining at home within their families and putting something back into their local communities.” Prior to presenting them with their certificates The Mayor of Fingal, Councilor Darragh Butler, wished the students well when they resume with their academic studies in September and he also hoped that the course would have a positive effect on their futures, irrespective of whether their ambition leads them to a career in football, fitness or something else.

Cycle Against Suicide is an initiative started by Irish entrepreneur, Jim Breen, as a result of his appearance on RTE’s The Secret Millionaire programme. The main objective of the Cycle is

to raise awareness of the considerable help and supports that are available for anyone battling depression, self harm, at risk of suicide or those bereaved by suicide.

The Cycle Against Suicide community is determined to let people in every corner of the island of Ireland know that: it’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help.

Noticeboard & Parish News “BURIED IN FINGAL” WEBSITE LAUNCH: Fingal County Council has launched a new free online database of all its burial records, indexed and fully searchable. The Council has responsibility for 33 burial grounds, and has records of burials dating back to 1905. Apart from the burial records of over 65,000 people interred in Fingal between 1905 and 2005, the database also contains information about the history of each graveyard, maps and drawings, photographs and location information, notes of notable burials and extracts from interesting epitaphs. The database is accessible via the website of Fingal County Council (www.fingal.ie), on the Burial Grounds page, or by simply searching for

“Buried in Fingal”. Speaking regarding the launch Colm McQuinn, Archivist Fingal County Council said “The database “Buried in Ireland” will provide an invaluable resource for Genealogists and anyone interested in Historical research.”
