This year’s Battle of the Book Reading Programme was launched by Deputy Mayor of Fingal Cllr Eithne Loftus in the beautiful surroundings of Swords Castle. The programme, a collaboration between Fingal Libraries and six primary schools within the Fingal area, is kindly supported by the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), and runs from September to December. The aim of the programme is to get children reading, and to foster a reading for life culture by using a multi-disciplinary interactive approach, with art, an author visit, creative writing and an active competition element between the different schools and their local library. Children are encouraged to read and gain confidence by discussing a common book, which provides a shared experience of reading. As well as reading the book, ‘The Ghosts of Magnificent Children, by Caroline Busher, the children will be participating in different activities organised by Fingal Libraries surrounding the themes presented in the book. This year the schools involved are the Old Borough National School, Swords; Mary Queen of Ireland National School, Rivermead; St Margaret’s National School, St Margaret’s; St Marnock’s, Portmarnock; St Patrick’s National School, Skerries; and Kinsealy National School, Kinsealy. 4

Sponsorship boost for Swords Men’s Shed

BOOST: City Jet’s business development manager Michael Rogers and Michael Quinn of Swords Men’s Shed shake hands on City Jet’s support for the Men’s Shed.

CityJet recently presented Swords Men’s Shed with two return tickets from Dublin to London as a prize for its upcoming raffle. The raffle will take place at the Swords Men’s Shed Christmas concert on December 3 at the Riasc Centre. Michael Rogers, Business Development Manager with CityJet, said: “We are delighted to help Swords Men’s Shed raise funds to fit-out their new building in the heart of Swords. “The Men’s Shed movement has spread very quickly throughout Ireland and the idea is proving to be a very important part of many communities. “And I’m sure our local Shed will contribute a lot to this area in the years ahead. I wish them well.” Aimee Banks, who represented Ireland in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in November, last year, will be the soloist at the Men’s Shed Christmas concert. The building is being specially built and provided for the Shed by brothers Anthony and Paul Dunne through their company, Knife/Edge Fencing Ltd. Mr Graham added: “It is great to experience this kind of support from CityJet, Richard Corrigan and Knife/Fencing Ltd. “This recognition gives us a great boost and encourages us to work even harder and make Swords Men’s Shed one great Shed.” Meanwhile, the Shed, which was formed in 2014 and currently has 33 members, has been boosted further with the news that Dublin Airport is to sponsor the Christmas concert on

December 3. Maura Cassidy, Community Liaison Manager at Dublin Airport, said they were delighted to sponsor the concert and support the Shed’s fundraising campaign. “When fully operational Swords Men’s Shed will make a great contribution to the community of the greater Swords area,” said Ms Cassidy. “We believe this is a very important development so we are very pleased to support their project in this way.” Michael Quinn, from Swords Men’s Shed, said: “We are very grateful to Dublin Airport for its sponsorship of our concert. It is great recognition for the work we are doing.” Mr Quinn said the December Christmas concert is a very important fundraising event for his group. “All of this support is a great boost for all the volunteers involved in the Swords Men’s Shed project and will enable us increase our membership as well as offer a greater range of activities,” he added. Decent skins to mark National Potato Day There will be plenty of fun at Newbridge House & Farm.

Keogh’s Farm and Country Crest are calling on families to join them on Saturday, October 8 in honour of Ireland’s greatest staple food - the potato. The National Potato Day celebrations will take place at Newbridge House & Farm, Donabate, with food and family fun activities between 12noon and 4pm. The free, family fun day is being hosted by local farming businesses, Keogh’s Farm and Country Crest, in celebration of National Potato Day. Some of the exciting activities on the day will include potato sack racing, tug-o-war, face painting, bouncy castles, arts and crafts, music and more. Guests will especially enjoy the farm-fresh food fare being provided by the event sponsors, with lots of delicious spud-based meals and snacks being served.

Mayor gets on his bike for major cycle The Great Dublin Bike Ride on September 11 passed through a number of areas in Fingal including Swords. Mayor of Fingal Cllr Darragh Butler and his sister Fidelma Butler and brother-in-law Robert McNamara were among those taking part. They made it to the Fingal border as part of the event which attracted around 5,000 participants. “I completed the first stage 29km to Swords from Smithfield, down the quays, along the coast road by Clontarf to Baldoyle, Portmarnock, Malahide and then Swords,” said Mayor Butler. “Setting out from Smithfield just after 8.30am, we made it to Swords in just under 80 minutes. “An incredibly enjoyable experience and I might even be tempted to do the full 60km next year. Fidelma and Rob continued on.” Fingal County Council, along with other local authorities were the event stakeholders and with Sport Ireland, Dublin City Council and Healthy Ireland, brought this major event to North County Dublin.

Plenty of treats in store for Halloween By Patrick Martin The evenings are getting shorter, the mornings are getting cooler and those long bright evenings are but a distance memory as another inconsistent summer has slipped through our grasp. However, while the changing of the seasons can bring with it an air of gloom, despair not. Halloween, and all the excitement it entails, is almost upon us once more, and is the last fun festival we have to enjoy before the countdown to Christmas begins. Local children (as well as the adults) will already be entertaining thoughts of what they’ll be dressing up as with October 31 fast approaching. Every year the costumes get more and more adventurous with plenty of creativity on show for us to admire. Children are becoming more imaginative with their choice of outfit and there is always the added incentive of competitions for the Best Costume to send them into creative mode. Of course, Trick or Treat will never go out of fashion, and especially for the younger ones, it’s probably the most magical part of the whole Halloween experience. However, there are usually lots of other things to do locally so keep an eye out for events, including Halloween camps and Ghostbus tours that may be taking place in the community. There will also be a mid-term break for the children to enjoy (and their

teachers!), and the last bank holiday of the year to look forward to. This year it actually falls on Monday, October 31. Although Halloween is always a magical time for the youngsters, there are safety issues that can’t be ignored, especially if the children are attending bonfires. Because, the clock will have gone back an hour the previous weekend, it will be darker earlier, and it’s probably a good idea to have your children dressed in bright colours if they are going around the doors Trick or Treating. Also, it’s vital that adults supervise the children at all times. For many years, bonfires on green spaces in residential areas were a main feature of Halloween, and continue to be a huge attraction for people of all ages. However, while the sight of a blazing fire illuminating the night sky can add more than a frisson of excitement to the Halloween experience, bonfires come with a major health warning. Horror stories emerging from the Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments in our hospitals over the Halloween period are becoming all too common with some unfortunate people sadly ending up with life-altering injuries that could so easily have been prevented with safety precautions. The fact of the matter is: illegal bonfires can be highly dangerous and can cause a serious amount of damage to people and the environment. Indeed, local authorities, including Fingal County Council, are left counting the cost financially long after the last bonfire has fizzled out. Of course, this is money that if it were redirected towards providing local amenities, would benefit the entire community all year round. At this time of year, spare a thought too for the excellent work carried out by our emergency services that are on standby to deal with every eventuality on their busiest night of the year. Despite these warnings, don’t lose sight of the fact that Halloween is meant to be a special time in which to have fun. Stay safe and enjoy all the events that are happening in the community. Let’s hope the locals in Swords have a great time and provide the wow factor with their range of costumes!

Recipe for Halloween Bat Wings Parents might think it a bit disgusting because of the colour but it’s healthy and really appeals to kids! By: Minichefs Fifteen chicken wings; one large clove of garlic; three tablespoons of Muscovado Sugar; three tablespoons of light Soy Sauce or Worcester Sauce; three tablespoons of Tomato Puree; two tablespoons of Runny Honey; Black, Blue and Green Food Colouring    Instructions Preheat oven to 109C/375F/ Gas 5. Put wings in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil. Cook for about 20 minutes.  While waiting for the wings to cook prepare the sauce. Crush the clove of garlic then add sugar, soy sauce, tomato puree & honey and mix really well together. Add the food colouring about three drops at a time for each colour until the sauce looks black in colour. Pour into an oven proof dish (large enough for the wings). Drain the wings thoroughly then carefully add them to the sauce and coat evenly. Bake in the oven for a further 15 minutes or until the sauce has thickened and turn the wings over again. Linders Renault – A big company with a bigger heart

A local charity received a brand new van recently after its message of hope won over the heart of Linders Motors Fleet Manager Ciaran Curran. The Andy Morgan Foundation have been donating ‘Buddy Benches’ to schools with the aim of allowing children, who may be feeling under pressure, to take time out and sit quietly. The benches are built by local Men’s Sheds and prisoners in Wheatfield Prison. However, the Foundation found that it was unable to deliver the benches because it didn’t have the necessary transport. Joanne Fetherston, partner of the late Andy Morgan, said they just took it upon themselves to ask for a van as they had nothing to lose. They hoped they might get a van that had been traded in. However, their plight plucked the heartstrings of Mr Curran. Mr Curran took the story to the company’s bosses and they were only too delighted to help such a wonderful bunch of selfless people. Mr Curran called the Foundation’s Angie McEvoy in for a meeting to see what could be done to help. Linders’ bosses were blown away at the meeting by the Foundation’s work. Mr Curran said they knew they had to lend their support. “The concept of the Buddy Bench and the Foundation itself do so much great work and they are local to us here in North Dublin,” he said. Ms Fetherston said: “We have lots of schools waiting and now that we have the very generous gift of the van we can get things moving.” The Andy Morgan Foundation was set up in 2011. Its aim is to spread the message of HOPE to everyone who has lost someone to suicide and those suffering with depression, and to help children and teenagers.

Andy Morgan was a popular and outgoing local man who took his own life on New Year’s Eve 2010 to the utter devastation and shock of his partner Joanne, his three children and many friends. In the years since his death, Joanne and Andy’s friends have focused their efforts on ensuring others don’t have to go through what they’ve experienced. The Andy Morgan Foundation, set up in Andy’s memory, has since raised money for local suicide prevention and support services. The Foundation is now rolling out ‘Make A Bracelet Workshops’ in all primary schools with the help of secondary schoolchildren.

Let’s be honest: we Irish just love a party and will celebrate anything at the drop of a hat. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that we’re already thinking of the Christmas Party season and we haven’t even got to Halloween yet. There is nothing like being prepared though and sure before you know it, the last Halloween bonfire will have been extinguished and the countdown to Christmas will begin in earnest. Already Christmas Party nights have been booked and in the coming weeks hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues will be receiving calls (if they haven’t already) to cater for yet another party. There was a time not long ago when the sacred Christmas Party was under threat due to the recession, with many workplaces deciding against the annual splurge but thankfully that’s all behind us now. The economy is finally on an upward curve and the purse strings can be loosened a little. While organising the Christmas Party is great fun caution must be exercised when choosing the right venue. How many times has there been a row in the office when deciding where to go, and the more staff there is, the more potential for a dispute. Inevitably the venue will not suit everybody as it will be closer in proximity to some people’s homes but for others it will be miles away hence the chance for acrimony. Gym members get into the swing for charity Dinny Collins Fitness in Swords is proud to have hosted its first annual charity event in aid of the Fingal Bereaved by Suicide Support service. The event, a 1km walk and kettlebell swing, took place at Malahide Castle where teams of three walked a combined total of 1km while swinging a kettlebell, not as easy as it may sound! The event was a huge success and all those

involved were delighted to have raised €1,000 from the challenge. This is an amazing amount and will go a long way for this wonderful charity as well as raising much needed awareness of its existence. Unfortunately the weather on the day was very bad but the hardy participants braved the lashing rain to complete the challenge. It took

approximately 40 minutes from start to finish with about 40 people taking part. Dinny Collins said: “We could not be more proud of the support from DCF members and their willingness to take part in this event.” Fingal Bereaved by Suicide provides exceptional support to families and communities in Fingal who have been bereaved by suicide.

TGI Fridays provides food for children’s day out

TGI Fridays Swords provided food, including dessert, for around 1,500 children who attended this year’s Dublin Taxidrivers’ Special Children’s Day Out on September 13. The taxi drivers took the children with special needs out for a big day of fun in the capital. Children with special needs from over 35 hospitals and centres from across the city met at Parnell Square where the parade was officially launched by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Brendan Carr. The event kicked off with a live DJ, street theatre, balloon modelling and plenty of goodies for all. Then the cavalcade of taxis along with their Garda escort paraded down O’Connell Street en route to the Tote Hall at Leopardstown Racecourse. Entertainment for the afternoon included boy bands, face painters, magicians, clowns and a laser show. NRC Taxis proudly sponsored this very worthwhile event.

TRICK OR TREAT ‘Fangtastic’ recipes for Halloween

It’s that time of year again. But we don’t have to wait until October 31 to sink our teeth into some ‘Fangtastic’ foods. Try out these WICKED ideas to ‘creep’ the fun into every bloody meal!

GHOSTBUSTERS PEASY POTATO Cook and mash potatoes with a drop of milk. Cook peas. Keep a few for eyes aside and blitz the rest in a blender. Add a few drops of water to make a thick green paste. Melt in some cheddar cheese to make tasty cheezy peas. Spoon a puddle of the blended peas onto a plate. Assemble a tablespoon of potato into a mountain shape and place on top of the green pea slop! Add two peas as eyes onto the potato stacks.

SPOOKY ‘SANDWITCH’ SNAKE: Chop a cheese string into even sized round chunks. Place cherr y tomatoes in between cheese chunks. Chop top and tail off cucumber and use as the head and tail of snake. Place a pea on top of a piece of sweetcorn and use cream cheese/hummus to make them stick to each other and to the cucumber head as eyes.
