Swords Castle project a step closer

he improvement works at Swords Castle have moved a major step forward following the demolishment of derelict buildings in front of the castle at North Street. The demolition of the buildings will facilitate necessary masonry consolidation works to the East Wall of the castle and will involve local traffic management on North Street including temporary closure of the footpath. The contractors, L&M Keating Ltd, spent a few days preparing the buildings for demolition which took place on June 7. Scaffolding has been erected at the front of the buildings on North Street and the interiors are being cleared. Outgoing Mayor of Fingal Cllr David O’Connor and Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid and a number of councillors visited the site to be briefed on the progress so far on the latest phase in the council’s development of the Swords Cultural Quarter. Fingal County Council executive architect Brian O’Connor told them that work on the Gatehouse is well underway and the installation of a new vault was recently completed. Masonry consolidation works on the Gatehouse and Knights’ Chamber are continuing and the demolition of the North Street buildings

will facilitate the commencement of consolidation work on the East Wall of the castle. Other work in progress on the site includes alterations to paths and landscaping of paths and the removal of cabins inside the castle walls. The current phase of works also includes the reconfiguration of the temporary events information cabin inside castle walls and the installation of new external lighting and site services to facilitate better all-year access within the castle. The castle will remain open as a heritage attraction during the works which will provide better access and an improved visitor experience upon completion. Following his visit, Outgoing Mayor O’Connor said: “It has been a long time coming but it great to see that the buildings on North Street are about to be demolished and the East Wall of Swords Castle will be visible to everybody again. “This is part of a much needed rejuvenation of the north end of Swords Main Street and it great to see the progress that has been made to date.” Paul Reid said the demolition of the North Street buildings represents a major milestone in the Swords Castle project. “When Swords Cultural Quarter is completed it will greatly enhance the town and provide a

major boost to the local economy and the local community,” he said. Swords Castle is a national monument and the works are subject to Ministerial consent and oversight from Department of Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The works are partially funded under a grant issued under the European Regional Development Fund for Swords Cultural Quarter and this phase of the project will cost just under €500,000. The Swords Cultural Quarter will be a new major central public and civic space outside Swords Castle featuring a new library and civic centre building to sit alongside County Hall as well as new landscape interventions in the park and the town. Swords Castle was originally built as the residence of the first Anglo-Norman Archbishop of Dublin around 1200 AD. Music competition has key to success Liam Cunningham (16) from the Play Piano School of Music in Swords was declared the overall winner of the Dublin Airport Swords Young Musician of the Year (SYMY) 2016. This is the second time that Liam has won this title having achieved the top spot in 2014. The competition, which aims to nurture the vast musical talent in Swords and the Fingal area, was held at the Emmaus Retreat Centre Lissenhall Swords. Prizes were awarded in categories such as piano, strings, voice, violin, guitar, recorder, woodwind, brass and also featured categories for chamber groups in classical music, vocal and traditional. This year students of Play Piano apart from winning all the individual age categories for classical piano, also took the first place for traditional piano in the Under 18 section. Next year Play Piano will be entering students for the piano duets, and singing. Play Piano would like to thank all the teachers, students and parents for making it a very successful year once again and look forward to the school growing and striving for better achievements in 2017.

Mayor raises Rainbow Flag in Swords

Newly appointed Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, raised the Rainbow Flag at County Hall, Swords, as part of the ‘Having Pride in Local Government’ initiative, and to mark the LGBTQ Pride Festival held in Dublin on the last weekend in June. Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid laid a wreath as a mark of respect to the 49 victims of the Orlando shooting on June 12. The event was attended by councillors, Fingal County Council staff and members of the public, and was part of a series of nationwide ceremonies where local authorities raised the Rainbow Flag at County Buildings. Mayor Butler said he welcomed the support of the Committee of Dublin Pride and the Chairperson and Board of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network for the initiative. He added that the Dublin Pride festival has become a celebration of diversity in modern Ireland. “The Rainbow Flag is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride and LGBTQ social movements,” said Mayor Butler. “The colours reflect the diversity of the LGBTQ communities and I am delighted, in my first week as Mayor of Fingal, to raise the Rainbow Flag at the County Hall of Fingal County Council.” Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

Gym members muscle in on Sandstorm event

MEMBERS of a local gym flexed their muscles recently during an event at Dollymount Strand. There was over 1,200 entrants at the Spin 103.8fm Sandstorm 5k obstacle course run and the representation from Dinny Collins Fitness, based in Swords, were well up to the challenge. The Swords team placed 2nd (Dinny Collins) in the Men’s race and 3rd (Suzanne Sheehy) in the Female event, not bad for a small, fun orientated gym. There were also some first timers, who had never completed any 5k event, who were delighted to get their first medal - Lida Hertel, Nikki Gilligan and Asa Sandford. Dinny Collins Fitness also celebrated its first birthday on May 20 too with a party and barbecue. Dinny Collins told Swords Local: “I have been in business since 2009 with Fingal Kettlebells. I had a van loaded with kettlebells and I drove around every day and did classes in Swords, Malahide, Donabate, Rush and Lusk. “In May last year I took the plunge and chased my dream of having my own place. “I leased a building in Seatown Swords and it’s been a huge success so far. I’m so grateful for all our amazing customers who make it a fun, friendly and welcoming place to enjoy our exercise.” Dinny said they have clients of all abilities, from total newbies to elite Ironmen triathletes. “Egos are left at the door and the most important thing for me is everyone’s smiling and having fun together,” he said. “I treat everyone differently as we all are, and encourage everyone to do only what’s suitable for them. “Because my guys are enjoying the classes and having a good laugh they 8

Snowflakes thank fundraisers Snowflakes Autism Support, based at Holywell Community Centre, Swords, would like to thank Gaelscoil Bhaile Brigin who raised €273 from a recent event. The pupils from the school dressed all in blue to highlight Autism Awareness. Well done to all involved. Snowflakes would especially like to thank Grace and Luke Branagan McGale for presenting them with the cheque. Meanwwhile, Snowflakes would also like to wish Holywell Community Centre manager Daniel Wilson the very best of luck when he sets off to climb Kilimanjaro on July 9. Daniel will be raising funds for the charity and will proudly raise the Snowflakes flag on Grace and Luke Branagan McGale present the Kilimanjaro! cheque to Snowflakes.

Businesses missing online opportunities Irish businesses are missing opportunities to create jobs and grow sales because they are not selling enough online. That’s according to Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Fingal Local Enterprise Office, which is running a scheme to help small businesses to sell online. Recent research from PayPal indicates that in 2015, 86 per cent of Irish internet shoppers made overseas purchases via the internet with an average spend of €964. Reasons given by Irish online shoppers for purchases abroad hinted at the lack of access to goods online in Ireland. As a consequence, small Irish businesses are losing out to foreign suppliers and large multinationals who are aggressively targeting online channels as a means of reaching Irish consumers. In response to this, the Local Enterprise Office in Fingal is providing grants to small businesses that wish to invest in upgrading their web presence so that they can sell online. An ‘information session’ took place at the Carnegie Court Hotel, Swords recently, which gave Fingal-based small businesses an insight as to how they can use E-Commerce and digital marketing to boost sales. Mr Geoghegan said: “We approved 50 Online Voucher applications in 2015 totalling €100,000. “This has been a huge help to many small businesses in the region. This year, I want to see this increase further.” The Local Enterprise Office has secured funding from the Department of Communications and Natural Resources to address this imbalance by helping smaller businesses to sell online. A grant of €2,500 is available to small businesses who wish to invest in growing their E-trading capabilities under the voucher scheme. Swords Tidy Towns to open Green Project

Swords Tidy Towns is opening its Green Project (Swords Tidy Towns/Youthreach Green Project) at the Youthreach Centre on North Street at 12am on Saturday, July 23. New Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, will cut the ribbon to officially open the project. The Swords Summerfest will be held over this weekend and Swords Tidy Towns would

like to extend an invitation to the public to visit the project on July 23. You will not be disappointed. Green Project Coordinator Laurie Flanagan will be on hand with some of the Tidy Towns volunteers to guide you and answer your questions. Swords Tidy Towns will also be launching their new Commemorative Garden at St Colmcilleâ€™s

Councillors meet in Swords to discuss housing crisis

wo top officials from the Housing Agency addressed members of Fingal County Council recently at County Hall, Swords. Conor Skehan, chairperson of the Housing Agency, and Jim Baneham, senior executive with the Agency, made presentations and answered questions at a special meeting of the Fingal County Council’s Housing Strategic Policy Committee to which every councillor was invited. Mr Skehan paid tribute to the work being

done by the council in relation to housing and said the issues which need to be tackled include availability, affordability and creating communities. Following their presentations, Mr Skehan and Mr Baneham answered a broad range of questions from councillors present. Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid updated councillors on the approaches being taken at national and local level to deal with the housing crisis. He reported on a meeting between

representatives of the 31 Local Authorities and Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Simon Coveney. Mr Reid reported that the new minister fully accepted that the current issues around housing need to be treated as a national crisis and it is currently the number one priority for the Government. Minister Coveney is also committed to developing a new strategy for housing within 100 days of taking office and is working to secure extra capital. “We welcome the announcement by the Minister that any extra funds he secures will be used to reward performing councils,” said Mr Reid. “In Fingal, we are ahead of our targets under the 2015-2017 Housing Strategy and we are looking at ways of accelerating our plans over the next six months. Margaret Geraghty, Director of Housing and Community, is scheduled to address councillors on the situation in Fingal at the upcoming meetings of the three area committees. Chairman of the Housing SPC, Clr Ken Farrell, thanked Mr Skehan and Mr Bateman for their attendance and engaging with councillors while the Outgoing Mayor of Fingal, Cllr David O’Connor, said it was an excellent meeting.

Swords Rugby Club seeks new members

Swords rugby team has been a big success since its formation.

Swords RFC is a senior men’s rugby team based at the ALSAA Complex, Dublin Airport. The club trains every Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30pm with pre-season starting back on Tuesday July 19. While Swords has traditionally been a town with a proud GAA tradition, rugby has been growing from strength to strength since its formation in 2005. The club is now looking to grow its members’ base on its Men’s team while also seeking expressions of interest for the formation of a Women’s team. Swords RFC will also be hosting a Volkswagen Tag League this autumn so keep your eyes peeled on social media for more information. Rugby is a great way to get or keep yourself fit and anyone who takes part will be made feel welcome and a valued part of the team. 1 cup porridge Oates milled 1 cup flour Teaspoon of baking powder 1/3 cup sugar 1.5 cup milk 1 table spoon vanilla essence 2 eggs 3 Tbl spoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 50 gsm melted butter Butter or oil for frying

Blueberry Smoothie: • 16

2 cups of milk, 1/2 tub blueberries, banana and handful of ice.

Method

with Blueberry Smoothie!

Sift Flower, ground porridge oats, salt into large bowl. Add sugar and stir. In separate bowel mix egg yolks (keeping egg whites for whisking) milk, vanilla essence, lemon juice, lemon zest and melted butter. Combine wet and dry ingredients to form batter. In a clean jug / bowel whisk egg whites until soft peaks form. Fold this through the pancake mix being carful not to over mix. Heat large pan, fry and enjoy!!
