Minister launches Fingal Healthy & Positive Ageing Report

The Minister of State for Communities and the National Drugs Strategy, Catherine Byrne, TD, recently launched the Fingal Healthy & Positive Ageing Indicators Report at a reception in The Atrium of County Hall, Swords. The Report, which is entitled Fingal Healthy & Positive Ageing 2016, was published as part of a Healthy and Positive Ageing Initiative established as a joint programme between the Department of Health, The Atlantic Philanthropies, the HSE and Age Friendly Ireland and as part of the National Positive Ageing Strategy in the Programme for Government. Among the key findings of the Report was that while only 3.4 per cent of people aged 5569 years had great difficulty accessing essential services, the figure rose to 16 per cent for those aged over 70. Almost one in five people over 55 reported that a lack of transport causes difficulty for socialising or essential tasks while 20 per cent of those aged over 70 have difficulty carrying out maintenance or upkeep on their homes. Eighty per cent of those aged 55-69 and 64 per cent of people over 70 say their health is good or very good but 17 per cent currently smoke daily which is higher than the national average 4

of 14 per cent. Over two-thirds of people aged 50+ admitted low levels of physical activity but 82 per cent of people aged 50+ reported high life satisfaction, although almost nine per cent of that group have severe depressive symptoms. More than two thirds of those aged 55+ meet socially with relatives, friends and colleagues at least once a week. However, six per cent meet people socially less than once a month or never. Almost one in five of those aged between 55 and 69 and 18 per cent of those aged 70+ volunteer at least once a month while 17 per cent of people aged 55+ in Fingal said they experienced negative attitudes or behaviour towards them as an older person. Minister Byrne said it was one of the best reports she had ever read and added that the establishment of Age Friendly Alliances and Older Persons’ Councils as part of the World Health Organisation’s Age Friendly Cities and Counties Initiative is a very positive development “It is vital that older people are given a place at the table where their concerns and aspirations can be aired and acted on. We are all thankfully living longer now than ever before and the signs are that this trend will continue into the future,” said

Minister Byrne. The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said: “In terms of Age Friendly actions, Fingal is a model of good practice and has followed through on the commitments made when we signed the Dublin Declaration on Age Friendly Cities and Communities in 2011. As a Council, we have championed the Age Friendly initiative and taken the lead on a number of specific measures for older citizens. While the percentage of older people in Fingal is relatively small now it is set to grow rapidly in the next 15 to 20 years and we need to plan and prepare for this. The Fingal Healthy and Positive Ageing Report provides evidence that will assist us in doing this.” The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Eithne Loftus, said: “The first five year programme has been completed and the Fingal Age Friendly Alliance has begun the process of developing a new Age Friendly framework for Fingal. Up until now data, specific to older people, was very scarce but now, as a result of this Healthy and Positive Ageing Report, we have data that can and should be used as an aid to help development plans for 2017 and beyond.” Contact us: communitylocals@gmail.com

SWORDS CASTLE & SWORDS CULTURAL QUARTER UPDATES December 2016 Councillor Darragh Butler - Swords Castle update

“To congratulate Fingal County Council with regard to the on-going development of Swords Caste and to ask the Chief Executive when the protective railings will be coming down from the front of the Castle and how we hope to make best use of Swords Castle for 2017 and beyond?”

Further conservation and consolidation works are planned at Swords Castle in 2017. Preparations including design and consent processes for an ambitious programme have started and it is expected that works could start in Q2 2017. The area outside the Castle and on North Street will receive a significant public realm upgrade to provide an attractive civic space outside the Castle. Design work on this is progressing and it is intended to develop the proposal and bring this to develop this to council for planning notice in Q3 2017. The area enclosed by the railings must be archeologically resolved with DAHRRGA ministerial approval prior to works on the public realm works commencing. The railings will protect the area while this work progresses and will afford high visibility for the passing public. Swords Castle has the potential to become a major focal point for both events and cultural activity in the future. In 2017 the

Following on from the public consultation process in relation to the Swords Civic and Cultural Centre initials studies are progressing in relation to the development of an ambitious new building to accommodate county library, theatre venue and gallery space. Detailed briefing is progressing in relation to the requirements and a design team will be appointed early in 2017. The project will be subject to public planning process and a start on site in 2018 is anticipated, subject to funding. At these early stages it is estimated that a substantial building of this nature could take up to 2 years to fully complete on site.

Fingal to host 2017 Dublin Half Marathon at Newbridge House

Fingal, and Fingal County Council, will host the 2017 Dublin Half Marathon which will take place on Sunday, September 24, with the start and finish at Newbridge House and Farm, Donabate, and the route taking up to 10,000 runners around the peninsula. The formal announcement was made by Dublin Marathon Race Director, Jim Aughney, and a special reception in County Hall, Swords, on Monday evening to mark the occasion was attended by the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, Fingal County Council Chief Executive Paul Reid, the Chairman of Dublin Marathon, Liam Ó Riain, members of the Council and representatives of local athletics clubs. The event, which is the biggest half marathon run in Ireland, had previously been staged in the Phoenix Park but the number of participants had to be capped at 8,000. The move to Fingal will allow race organisers to cater for the growing demand

from athletes at home and abroad to participate in the race. “The half marathon has huge potential to grow and, with the commitment of Fingal County Council, we believe it will rapidly reach over 10,000 participants. Fingal offers a unique venue in Newbridge House and also some of the most scenic areas for our athletes,” said Mr Aughney who added that the actual route will be announced in due course. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, said that the event would be a major boost to the area. “An event like this will certainly help to promote Fingal and the prospect of 10,000 runners together with their families and supporters coming to the area will certainly generate extra revenue for local businesses. I’ve taken part in all the Fingal 10ks and I’m not sure if I’ll be up for the half marathon but I might give it a go,” he said. The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, said: “We have

established an excellent working relationship in recent years with Dublin Marathon through our involvement in the Swords 10k and the Dublin Marathon. It is a source of great pride that they think Fingal, and Newbridge House, is the ideal venue for this event and we look forward to working with them to making this event a big success.” At the reception a special presentation of cheques for €3,000 was made by the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon Race Series to representatives of Metro St Brigid’s, Clonliffe Harriers and Fingallians Athletic Club in appreciation of each club providing stewards and volunteers for the events. Fingal’s 1916 Story Now on Film

The story of Fingal’s involvement in the 1916 Easter Rising is now on film and Fingal County Council hosted a successful premiere of the docudrama Fingal’s Finest last month, in the Draíocht Arts Centre. The film was created and produced by Tile Media and was co-sponsored by Fingal County Council as part of its 1916 Commemoration Programme. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, and the Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid, were joined by elected representatives, relatives and friends of the men and women of Fingal who took part in the events of 1916 gathered in Draíocht’s theatre for the first public viewing of the film which was shot in various locations around the county during the year. Fingal’s Finest is the story of the Fifth Battalion, Dublin Brigade of Irish Volunteers, and their role in the 1916 Rising. The narrative for the film is largely driven by the witness statements of those involved, including Irish Volunteers Joseph Lawless

(Cal Kenealy) and Richard Mulcahy (Andrew Macklin), Cumann na mBan scout Molly Adrien (Natasha Duffy), and officers William O’Connell (Eoin O’Sullivan) and Eugene Bratton (Tim Casey) of the Royal Irish Constabulary, who act as ‘avatars’ as the events of Easter Week, 1916, unfold. It is hoped that the film will be seen by as many people as possible across the country. It will form part of Fingal County Council’s 1916 Centenary Legacy Collection, which will be available through our Libraries, Local Studies and Archives collections. Mr Reid said that Council was delighted to have been involved in the project. “It was important to us in Fingal that we find a fresh way to tell this unique story to a new audience of younger people. I think that Fingal’s Finest will enable us to do just that, keeping the memory of the achievements of the Fifth Battalion and the Fingal Brigade alive for future generations,” said Mr Reid. The Mayor added that the film was an excellent way to ensure

that those from Fingal who were involved in the Easter Rising are not forgotten. “I think this film is a great way of acknowledging the men and women of Fingal who made a huge and lasting contribution to who we are and what we have become as a result of their efforts in the events of 1916. Is Cuimhin Linn, We Remember,” said Cllr Butler. Colin Farrell of Tile Media, who wrote and directed the film said it was a great opportunity to tell a story that is not known by people outside of Fingal. “We were delighted to be asked by Fingal County Council to work with them in telling the story of the Fifth Fingal Battalion of the Irish Volunteers. Filmmakers are always on the lookout for powerful, untold stories and this was one of them. It may be well known to many of the people of Fingal, and by historians, but is largely unknown by most of the rest of the population,” said Mr Farrell. Details regarding future screenings of Fingal’s Finest will be announced at a later date.

Queen of the Land - North County Macra na Feirme Recently one of our members Grace Hoey participated in the W.R. Shaw Queen of the Land Competition in Tullamore, Offaly. Grace who is a Lusk Local really did us all proud. The Queen of the Land festival was founded in 1964. This year there were 32 Queens participating in the competition from Macra na Feirme clubs all over Ireland, as well as International Representatives. The judging panel included last years winner Christine Buckley, Billy Shaw of W.R Shaw and Anna-Marie McHugh of the National Ploughing Association. Our Dublin representative Grace from Lusk is a member of North County Macra. Grace is 22 years old and is in her final year of culinary arts in DIT. Grace is the Young Farmers Chairperson of Dublin Macra and PRO of North County Macra. North County Macra are always looking for new members. If your aged between 17 to 35 and would like to get involved in sports, travel, drama, debating, or just want to meet new people and have some fun then itâ€™s the ideal organisation to get involved in. When I make these in schools, students are always amazed at how quick and easy they are to make and how delicious but nutritious they are to eat! Dried fruits make these bites sweet and along with a small amount of natural sweetener, there is no need for adding sugar. Dark dried fruits are also quite nutritious as they contain valuable amounts of minerals such as iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium which are quite important for energy and metabolism. The oats are full of soluble fibre and B vitamins helping to fill us up and slowly release energy over time. The nuts and seeds contribute healthy fats and protein to help stabilise our blood sugars and curb our appetite. 100% cocoa powder is antioxidant and nutrient rich with iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and flavonoids. It also has energy and mood boosting effects due to its natural caffeine and theobromine content. -Blitz the nuts/seeds in a blender until they become quite fine/powdery. Remove. -Blitz the dried fruit adding water as required to make a thick paste. -Add the nuts/seeds and remaining ingredients to the dried fruit paste and mix together. Add water teaspoon by teaspoon if the mixture is too dry. -When the ingredients are starting to stick together, dampen your hands and roll about a tablespoon of the mixture with your fingers and palm to form bite sized balls of energy! -Roll the balls in the topping of your choice and chill them in the freezer/fridge for an hour before eating.....if you can resist that long!

Series in Dunboyne has now started. The club have 4 teams entered. The next two legs will take place in Lucan & Tallaght with the final event taking place in Balheary on Sunday 5th February 2017.

Leinster Hurling Champ 2017: The

championship will begin on Sunday 23rd April with the first series of matches in the round robin section involving Laois, Westmeath, Meath & Kerry.

Leinster Football Champ 2017: Dublin will start their quest for a record breaking 7th provincial crown in a row against Wexford

or Carlow. The game will be played over the June bank holiday in with Wexford Park or O’Moore Park (Portlaoise).

WINSOR MOTOR GROUP SUPPORT THE SIMON COMMUNITY

In December gone, the staff in all 14 Windsor Motor Group Dealerships held a “Christmas Jumper Day” to raise awareness and money for the “Simon Community of Ireland” Charity. Throughout the day, there was plenty of pies, biscuits, soft drinks, tea/coffee and other goodies for staff and customers to enjoy along with a number of Simon Community Collection Buckets, for anybody that wanted to donate. To further add support to this very worthy cause, every cent raised, Windsor Motor Group will

match the amount. Robbie O’Neill, After-sales Director, Windsor Motor Group and CSR team member said, “Currently in Ireland there are thousands of people homeless and in Dublin alone there are approximately 993 families, of which over 2,000 children are without permanent accommodation, as well as hundreds of people sleeping rough on our streets. Knowing the money raised will help, to improve the lives of people in this very vulnerable position, is a

great feeling. The Simon Community of Ireland provide the best possible care, accommodation and support for people experiencing homelessness and those at risk and Windsor Motor Group is delighted to play our part in helping this very worthy cause”.
