Lets pull together and ensure a happy Christmas Oh dear, once again we have gone into severe lockdown in a bid to surpress this pandemic which has been plaguing our country and the world for the last10 months. Once again our movement is restricted. We have to stay at home instead of going to work except for certain exceptions and we are subject to nearly all the restrictions we had earlier this year. So,what can we do to make sure a new day dawns for us all soon. Well two simple things spring to mind. Firstly lets all pull together like we did at the start of the year and secondly lets all obey the Government rules and flatten the curve again. We should also all shop locally and ensure local jobs. Maybe this is the sharp shock we all needed to remind us about the dangers of not wearing face coverings, not regularly washing our hands thoroughly and not keeping our distance when meeting others.Community transfer of the virusseems to be the problem so lets not go back to meeting numbers of people. Simply put, we all want this to decrease again as soon as possible. We all want to reduce the number of people in hospital and worse, so lets all pull together now as we did before and turn this around quickly, get back to as near normal a society as possible and stay safe and enjoy the Christmas season. We all have mothers, fathers, children, spouses, partners and family we love and do not want to see ill or die, so please, please lets all pull together, protect ourselves, protect our loved ones and our neighbours and give each other the best Christmas present ever by flattening the curve again. That way we can have as near a normal Christmas once again. So please, obey the rules, stay safe, lets pull together and keep supporting our HSE workers, our local shopping outlets and most of all each other. The Locals team.

Swords Tidy Towns still caring for our community!

Swords Tidy Towns volunteers care for the town of Swords. They generate enthusiasm and co-operation in order to enhance the natural and built environment. We plan to use the clear targets set by the Tidy Towns competition to give strong focus in the following tasks : Community: build strong communication with businesses, residents association, local council and schools to promote our work and to seek their help for the benefit of the community as a wholeDiversity: actively seek new

volunteers across a broad section of the community, and promote Swords as a town of diversity and inclusiveness Environmental: be a champion of biodiversity and environmental issues. We are spread wide due to current restrictions we only meet to work in pairs. Huge amount of litterpicking, graffiti removal & planting done. Our summer plants moved to overwinter in the tunnel. Big shout out to Castlegrange Res. Assoc. doing a brilliant job in their area.

Swords First Responders still operating under restrictions

Due to current covid19 restrictions our response capacity will be reduced. Calls of a critical nature such as Cardiac Arrest will still be responded to at present. trained volunteers who will provide emergency treatment of Cardiac Arrest, Stroke,Chest Pain and Choking in the Swords area. Swords CFR operates in conjunction with the National Ambulance Service to provide a rapid response to victims of Cardaic arrest, chest pain, choking and stroke in the local area.The aim of the group is

to provide life saving interventions such as CPR and defibrillation to victims should an ambulance not yet be at the scene or to provide assistance to the ambulance if they are present. able minutes are lost if CPR is not initiated. Swords CFR aims to save lives in the community by local volunteers providing emergency assistance.

GoRedForDyslexia in November by Siobhan O’Neill White Did you know that 1 in 10 children in Ireland are Dyslexic? In the past, Dyslexic children were often shunned and ignored in school, as they were not considered to be clever. But the reality is, Dyslexic children are clever, creative and smart. Our daughter is Dyslexic and struggles with reading and spelling but also happens to be intelligent and observant with a vivid imagination. Thankfully schools are much better at supporting Dyslexic children nowadays. Our daughter gets additional learning support and can use technology, such as her scanning pen, in school too. The scanning pen (reader pen) is a tech pen which help her understand words and their meanings. When she comes across a word she does not understand, she scrolls the scanning pen across the word and the pen reads the word aloud to her. The pen also has a dictionary function, to give her a definition of the word if she needs that. The pen comes from Scanningpens.com and parents can get a 14 day trial for free by logging on to their website This month is Dyslexia

awareness month (#GoRedForDyslexia) and is a good opportunity to start conversations about Dyslexia. If you have worries about your child possibly being Dyslexic, contact The Dyslexia Association Of Ireland at Dyslexia. ie for advice and support. Also, speak with your child’s teacher and school principal about it. They can help arrange testing.We first started to worry about our daughter possibly being Dyslexic when she was around 6 years old and was struggling with homework. She had difficulty reading small, simple words and would often jumble them up. She really struggled with the word ‘was’, always reading it as ‘saw’. The school offered reading support and then, when this was not enough, they agreed to have her tested for Dyslexia. It was helpful to get the confirmation of Dyslexia because we knew what to do to help her and the school was fully supportive too. Please speak out and ask for the help and support you need because it will really help your child and that will make school a better experience for them. How can you get 66% instant growth on your money? By Dave Kavanagh A hugely important topic is planning for retirement. Unless you want to try and live on a mediocre state pension for what is likely to be over a third of your adult life, it would be wise to make your own plans and plan early. Obviously, the longer you contribute to a pension, the more you will have when you retire. One of the most attractive aspects is the tax relief on contributions at your marginal rate. This means that for anyone on the 40% tax rate, every €100 you contribute is only costing you €60. Another way of looking at that is that your €60 has grown by just over 66% to €100 the moment you have put it in! The other tax incentives, are that pension funds are invested in a tax-free environment and you can also take a tax-free lump sum at retirement stage. If you’re fortunate enough to already be in a company pension scheme or a superannuation, that is great (although depending on your length of service, you may want to supplement your fund by paying AVCs (additional voluntary contributions)). The people that administer your pension scheme should be able to provide you with information about that. If you have your own limited company, you can set up your own scheme and allow the company to pay for all or some of

the contributions. For everybody else, You can set up a personal pension or a PRSA (personal retirement savings account) and still get the tax relief. Self employed - One option that many self-employed people avail of, is to pay an annual amount into a pension in order to reduce their tax bill. Usually, they would have up to 31st October in the current year in order reduce their 2019 tax bill, but due to Covid-19, for those filing and paying online to Revenue, they will have more time to do this. Memory Makers - Reflections and Recollections, Cocooners Special Edition Fingal County Council’s Community Development Office has launched “Memory Makers - Reflections and Recollections Cocooners Special Edition 2020”, which features inspirational poems and short stories from cocooners across the County. The beautifully designed publication celebrates the voices of cocooners, reflecting and recollecting on memories, current or past events or fictional work inspired by these unprecedented times we are living through.In March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Government advised many older people or those who were classed as vulnerable due to ill health to cocoon and remain at home in order to minimise their risk of infection and prevent further spread of the virus. The Fingal Community Call Forum was set up in response to the Government’s request to assist the at risk members of our community to access essential services. In response to this, “Cocooning – A collection of activities for those self-isolating” was developed by the COVID-19 Fingal Community Response Project which is a collaboration between Fingal County Council, Age Friendly Fingal, Castleknock Community Centre Laurel Lodge, Blakestown Community Centre, Corduff Resource Centre, and Huntstown Community Centre.One element of this publication was the Short Story & Poetry Competition. Cocooners were invited to submit a short story or poem that evoked a memory of a moment in time or a special event that connected in some way to what is happening in Ireland today. The response was impressive with 39 entries received in the poetry section and 41 submissions in the short story category. The breadth and depth of the written work is truly impressive.Two volunteer judges, Marie McCaffrey and Domhnall Drislane had the difficult task of selecting three awardees in each category. The first edition of our Memory Makers Reflections and Recollections collection was published in 2008. The intention was to create a collection of some of the amazing work created by our seniors from across the county. Fingal unveil new Cricket School of Excellence

The Fingal community has come together to launch a new venture ‘The Fingal Cricket School of Excellence’ to enable passionate, local u11 and u13 club players gain access to outdoor cricket coaching programmes held at Balbriggan Cricket Club. The cricket school represents the positives of COVID, using the growing community spirit to come together, solve problems, and create the best opportunities moving forward. Mayor of Fingal Cllr David Healy said: “ I welcome the launch of ‘The Fingal Cricket School of Excellence’ and commend Cricket Leinster and the Fingal County Council Sports office for developing this innovative way to continue to provide coaching for young cricketers in Fingal.”Fingal Cricket Development Manager Brian O’Rourke welcomed the new venture “COVID has caused a complete re-examination of our Fingal cricket programme, and I am proud that again, the Fingal community has come together to turn an idea into a reality, to create a new COVID-safe cricket school to provide extra cricket training sessions to our passionate local cricketers”. O’Rourke added, “This is a new venture, tested through the Fingal u11s and u13s in 2020, but I hope that it will be expanded to all age groups, as seeing the passion of the young cricketers taking part, and Balbriggan Cricket Club as hosts, it is clear we have created something that we must expand and could be a model for other councils to follow in Leinster”.Marion Brown, principal sports officer at Fingal County Council was delighted to see the new venture saying “The Fingal Cricket School of Excellence is a shining example in these difficult times of what can be achieved when we come together and I am delighted that again Fingal will be leading the way in these community-based cricket programmes. Home Cook Recipes

Niamh’s basic bread – a truly lovely loaf! With lockdown and Covid restrictions, baking has been on the rise and became a more regular occurrence,even in households who never baked before!! This recipe here is quite a basic bread but the resulting loaf is really lovely and the beautiful baking smells are so comforting especially on darker Winter days. For more fibre, use a strong wholemeal flour.

Ingredients: • • • • • •

500g strong flour (And a bit more for kneading) 1.5 teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons olive oil (Helps give the bread a nice colour!) 1x7g sachet active dry yeast 3 teaspoons sugar 300ml warm water (Not too hot or it will kill the yeast) Preheat a casserole or pyrex dish with a lid for 30minutes at 250’c (has to have a lid in order for the bread to rise in the oven)

Method: 1. Mix dry yeast well into the flour in a large mixing bowl. 2. Add sugar, salt and olive oil. Then add the warm water. 3. Mix well until it combines together to form a dough. 4. Sprinkle some flour on a flat surface. Knead the dough for 10-15mins until the dough is less sticky, has a smoother surface and can stretch without tearing. If the dough is sticking to your hands, you could coat rub a small amount of olive oil all over your hands. 5. Roll the dough around to form into a ball. 6. Put a small amount of olive oil in a bowl and place the dough ball inside. Completely seal the top of this bowl with cling film. Leave to prove (set aside in a warm place) for 2-3hours until the dough has doubled in size. 7. Sprinkle some flour on a flat surface. Knock the air out of the dough by pressing it. Shape

again into a ball and leave for 1hour to do a final proof. 8. Score the top of the dough using a sharp knife. This helps the gases release 9. Place the dough in the preheated dish with the lid on for 20minutes at 250’c. 10. Remove the lid and allow bread to cook for a few more minutes in the oven until golden brown. 11. Place on a cooling rack/tray. Allow to completely cool before cutting. This can take up to 2hours.

Swords Tennis Club preparing for the future

Although closed due to the new Covid restrictions Swords Tennis club is still planning for the future. Swords tennis club has been in existence since 1983 and is located in Swords town park behind Swords Castle.They have 6 floodlit Tiger Turf courts and a clubhouse. They have approximately 180 members between mens ladies and kids and would always welcome any new members to the club,experienced or beginners. Their membership year runs from the

1st of July each year with membership from 55 to 180 euro’s per year. The courts will be open to the public for a charge of 5 euro per hour for adults and 3 for kids. The Ladies play on a Monday night from 7.30pm and their Men on a Thursday from 7.30pm,all new players will be welcome to try out on these nights when it re-opens.There are 5 different leagues held during the year by the D.L.T.C and they have teams entered in them all .Also they have internal tournaments and

club championships so there is plenty of tennis for everyone. All information about the club and membership can be found on their website www. swordstennisclub.ie or on their noticeboard in their clubhouse wwhen it re-opens. Coaching will be available for both adults and children at the club, contact details for the coaches can also be found on the website. developing a Football for All section within the club to

encourage kids of all abilities to participate in the game.We are looking for volunteers to help

in the following areas: coaching, organising and support of the section. As the kids will have
